It's 1980. The night before a big rain storm. The night before Sam's car skids into the canal. ...Except Sam opens a fob watch. A fan comic.
Chapter 2 will take place in 2007, after the 'death' of Harold Saxon.
So, this is just a fun little project I decided to do in my spare time :) It's not Ashes to Ashes complaisant, I'll admit that way way way back when Ashes first started airing, I was pretty salty about the explanation that Sam died in a car accident. I know how that show ended, and what they decided to go with, but I'm still just ignoring it all together. I guess this could be a 'fix it,' I'm not sure. Just suspend your disbelief. I'm going to estimate that chapter 2 will take about two months to finish, depending on my real life work load, but the script is already written.

Crack fic idea I've been sitting on for over a decade and have long given up ever writing: When Rory wakes up as a Roman Centurion in between Cold Blood and Pandorica Opens, his legion is responsible for peacekeeping duties between the Celts and the Romans under the command of Primus Pilus Gene Hunt.
Because if you get sent into the past after being killed, Gene Hunt is there for you. He always has been there and always will be.

Remember the idea I had to send an immortal Rose Tyler who's looking for teh Doctor again through a bunch of universes she has to stop in? I have a rough timeline for it now! This is all what Rose, after having a life with the metacrisis Doctor does. I'm still unsure how I'll do the reunion, but each of these will be a different fic, probably all oneshots.
Rose Becomes an Actor ⬇ Percy Jackson Crossover ⬇ Rose Becomes a singer ⬇ BBC Ghosts Crossover ⬇ US Ghosts Crossover ⬇ Rose Becomes a Teacher ⬇ Rose Becomes an Artist ⬇ Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies Crossover ⬇ Rose Becomes a Midwife ⬇ Call the Midwife Crossover ⬇ Rose Becomes the First Woman on Mars ⬇ Ghostbusters Crossover ⬇ Rose Becomes a Ghost Hunter ⬇ MCU/Spider-Man Crossover ⬇ Rose Becomes a Teacher, Again ⬇ Good Omens Crossover

Currently writing a life on mars & doctor who crossover/AU fic and can't decide on a title.
It's the typical "Sam Tyler is actually Chameleon arch-ed Master (Gasp!) trope. The Doctor saves him before he becomes a vehicular manslaughter victim and proceeds to help him solve the case.

WIP tag game
Rules: reveal the titles of the documents in your WIP folder and tag as many people as there are documents (or as many people as you want). Let others ask questions about the ones that interest them and post snippets or explain the contents as you see fit!
I'm a little late getting to this, but here we go - some Lokius WIPs 💚🤎
Thanks to @insert-witty-user-name-here @dewdropreader @loki-is-my-kink-awakening @mirilyawrites and @blackbirdofasgard for the tags - I'm genuinely so inspired by all your amazing fics/fics-in-progress!! 💕💕
Currently hopping around between a few different S2 fics, all loosely connected, which I’m planning to group into a series (umbrella title = “the end is where we start from”):
Holding On, Letting Go (post-finale)
Breathing Space (set during ep 1)
Warp and Weft (set during ep 3)
Under the Skin
Lokius fics started before S2:
Variation Ch11 eeeppp (…this is progressing better than the title implies, just more slowly than I’d like 😅)
Time after time post-S2 revision
Kiss prompts - as an apology, for luck, in joy
Untitled - possessed
Life drawing AU
And many, many WIPs for other fandoms. Singling out The Man Who Wasn't There Chs 4-6, my sadly-neglected-but-not-forgotten Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover (and the thrilling sequel, Ties That Bind, which may or may not ever see the light of day - but I remain hopeful!)
I don’t want to repeat tag, but open invitation to anyone who’d like to participate - I’m always fascinated to hear what other people are working on 💖

Tagged by @wonderlandleighleigh
So, wanted to get some hiatus rec lists going and encourage some self promo  in my friends so how about sharing your top fics no matter how big or  small - give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits/Most kudos/Most comments/Most bookmarks /Most words/Least words
Most hits, kudos & bookmarks: It Runs in the Family (Teen, Iron Man/Arrow crossover) Felicity Stark is the best of her parents. But becoming vice-president of a brand-new division of Stark Industries and moving to Starling City will test her in ways she never thought possible. Especially when a masked vigilante in green leather crosses her path. An Arrow/Iron Man crossover.
Most comments: Two Men, Same Name (Mature, Arrow, co-written with @melsanfo) Oliver Queen's path in life is set in stone. Suffocating under the high expectations of his parents while running a company he’s barely interested in. Still, he never fails to disappoint his parents, even when he’s on his best behavior. He’s supposed to settle down, marry well and follow in his father's footsteps, without stepping an inch out of place . . . until a red streak with yellow lightning changes his life forever.
Most words: Two Sides of the Same Coin (Mature, Chuck, 161,930 words) When you're a spy, there's all kinds of occupational hazards when you work with another spy. For Sarah Walker, though, one mission becomes a life-changing experience. Because working with Charles Carmichael leads to protecting Chuck Bartowski.
Least words: the disaster lineage vs. the coolaster lineage (G, Star Wars, 390 words) A different take on Twilight of the Apprentice . . . a louder take.
And for the fics I'm also proud of:
The Point (Teen, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Bottom line is, even if you see 'em coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. Just how did Buffy become the Slayer we see in The Wish?
heads-up display (G, Star Wars) Darth Vader throughout the Original Trilogy, as described by the readouts and warnings in his heads-up display.
Ready at Your Hand (Teen, Chuck) In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a Catholic plot against the queen comes to the attention of spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham. To protect Elizabeth, he develops an unusual plan: hide the passing of intelligence between two agents by a false romance. When Lady Sarah Walker and Chuck Carmichael meet, though, their pretend flirtation becomes much more.
Slipping Away (G, Doctor Who) She knows something is wrong.
Today's Inspirational Message (Teen, Veronica Mars) One version of Logan's summer.
Honestly, I love all my fics--so if anything catches your attention on my AO3 works page, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
And if anyone else wants to participate, consider yourself tagged.

Hey!
G'day Tumblr, I'm Thyla. Like it says in my bio, I've been meaning to make a tumblr account for ages, and the Great Twitter Incident of 2022 sped that up. Lmao. So I guess I better make an introductory post? My pronouns are they/them/theirs, xe/xem/xirs, ze/hir/hirs, ey/em/eirs. I'm basically nonbinary and queer, but I also use a lot of other labels like demisexual, androgyne, genderqueer, sapphillean, mspec, etc. I am a radical inclusionist - I include all GOOD FAITH queer identities. I have ADHD, and I'm 2e. So ADHD, if fact, that I forgot to put it in this original post and had to edit this lmao. I write fanfic sometimes, but I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to link public social media to my account, lol. I am a young adult, and I'm from Melbourne. I don't feel comfortable disclosing my exact age, my exact location, my AGAB, or my race when online.
I have no DNI - if you're being annoying then I'll block you, and then you can't interact. That's the DNI, lmao. My interests (absolute favourites in italics): YouTube - I watch basically anything Grian, Mumbo Jumbo, PearlescentMoon, or GeminiTay post, including Hermitcraft, the Life Series, 100 hours hardcore, Afterlife SMP. I never got into Empires - well, not before the crossover, lol. I indulge in a bit of Stampy's Lovely World, on occasion. I also like other non-minecraft YouTubers: mostly ContraPoints, Jessie Gender, Luxander, RTGame, Philosophy Tube, Todd In The Shadows, etc. Some politics, some fun stuff. Books - I read a lot of fantasy, YA, and queer books. Right now I'm into the Grishaverse series by Leigh Bardugo, The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake, the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix, the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend, The List duology by Patricia Forde, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and related books by Becky Albertalli, and many of Rick Riordan's books. One of my favourite books/series of all time is the Lionboy trilogy by Zizou Corder. It's super underrated! Movies & TV - I love anything sci-fi, fantasy, or animated! Particularly Doctor Who, Firefly, Good Omens, Heartstopper, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Star Wars, Star Trek (Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Enterprise), Pixar, Studio Ghibli, Dead Poets Society... you get the idea. Music - Basically anything that's vaguely pop, indie, electronic, etc. My favourite artists include 100 gecs, Alice Glass, BANKS, Billie Eilish, BLACKPINK, Cavetown, Coldplay, Dua Lipa, many Eurovision artists, FKA twigs, Hozier, Lorde, Maneskin, MARINA, Mars Argo, Mitski, Olivia Rodrigo, Paramore, S10, Tame Impala, Taylor Swift, Troye Sivan, Vance Joy, Vera Blue... Musicals & Theatre - I've seen a couple, my favourites are Come From Away and Hamilton. Other things - As you can guess, I love thylacines! I like most animals, really. I particularly love Keeshonds and other Spitz-type dogs - I have a 2 year old Keeshond and he's the most gorgeous doggy in the whole wide world. Things I haven't finished yet, so please no spoilers - The Owl House, Star Trek: Prodigy.
Wow, that's a long post. If you made it this far, um, congrats?

Kamen Rider first picks honestly depend on what you'd want to watch as there's a lot of options:
W and OOO in whichever order, and then go into Fourze (all really solid: duo of detectives and their boss's daughter solving crimes -> wanderer with no selfish thought who teams up with a bird man formed from desire -> highschool delinquent whose main goal in life is to make friends. Also got a side plotline which is introduced in the first of the trio and then largely ended/discarded for later after the crossover movie for Fourze); Ryuki (Battle Royale Kamen Rider the Original. Definitely a darker tone overall, and while I haven't finished it I tend to hear a lot that its a very good one overall. Blade and Den-O are also fun ones from this era); Ex-aid, Zero-One or the current one Geats (written by arguably one of the best writers for Kamen Rider, and all really strong experiences. settings of Doctor Gamers curing people of viruses, Comedian ending up the CEO of an android making company, and Battle Royale Kamen Rider...4 or 5: Please don't fight each other edition [they do]); Build (REALLY GOOD! Has a fun and strong main cast, contains what was advertised as 'heated drama between men'. the plot premise is someone brought back an artifact from Mars and now Japan is split in three by a great wall)
Definitely not an exhaustive list of which series are good, but these are the ones I would generally recommend as a first series.
thanks for the recommendations!! that bird man one sounds especially interesting :D

Decided to make a Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover comic, about Sam being the Master, that no one asked for and is about 15 years too late 😂
Chapter 1 is almost done, I’ll hopefully have it posted here and on AO3 in the next week. Thinking of naming it “Sam Tyler Doesn’t Exist.” First chapter will stand alone, but I’ve written a script for a second chapter already. Mostly ignores Ashes to Ashes, and anything after series 4 of Doctor Who.
Gosh!

Beware The Building Sets With Motors Rip-off
No matter your level of ability or expertise, there are rules laid down by the World Cube Association that participants must abide by at official events. We all know very little else about Moonshot right now (there aren't even any promotional pictures out yet). A little bit something different for the listing of upcoming sci-fi films for 2022 with the sci-fi rom-com, Moonshot, which is set to depict life and love on Mars. Starring teen drama favorites, Cole Sprouse of Riverdale and Lana Condor of To All of the Boys I’ve Loved Before, we look to a future the place Mars has been colonized and now homes the best of one of the best people who once populated Earth. It should seem like you have messed up the whole cube but don't fret, it is going to be all right when all the nook items are oriented. Haunted Hint Tie fun ribbons of many colours to a tambourine to complete the exotic gypsy look. Twirling along with her tambourine, your child will love the gypsy life. Well, Buzz is getting his very personal spin-off film in 2022 that invites viewers to the origin story of Buzz from check pilot to the ultimate Space Ranger that we all know and love.
Will we ever have enough of Toy Story? Xavier Roberts was a teenager when he launched his Babyland General Hospital through the 1970s in Cleveland, Georgia, allowing children to undertake a "baby." In 1983, the Coleco toy firm began mass-producing these dolls as Cabbage Patch Kids. Based on a Japanese toy called "Poketto Monstaa," Pokemon had been tiny "pocket monsters" that battled each other when ordered by their "trainer." In 1996, Nintendo tailored the Japanese characters to advertise its portable video game system, Game Boy. Through this coming-of-age animation, a man recounts his childhood as a ten-12 months-previous boy rising up in Houston at the time of the Moon landing. Well, how a couple of tale of a boy who lived through those instances? A tumultuous job at the best of occasions. And if you’re at a unfastened end whilst ready for some of 2022’s large releases, there’s one of the best sci-fi movies of all time to work your approach via too. Not to be confused with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, that is the sequel that follows on from the final teaser scene the place (spoiler alert) Gwen calls out to Miles Morales by means of a portal to a different universe, and Spider-Man 2099, teased at the end.
There’s solely a teaser trailer out for now so we’re not quite positive what to expect but it doesn’t really feel too wild to suggest some Jurassic staples with epic dinosaur fights and breath-taking CGI on this one. And, like many MCU films, there’s hints at more crossover with Michael Keaton aka The Vulture making an look within the teaser trailer. It’s been a long time within the making with Black Adam originally set to look in 2019’s Shazam! It’s a two-parter as Miles continues to hurtle across the Spider-Verse, and according to the official description will “join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain extra powerful than something they've ever encountered.” Our Spidey sense is tingling for this one. rubik's cube web would subsequently be one that achieves a mean of 50505050 successes. Alternatively, possibly it just has not accumulated sufficient data but and the baseline coverage is in the lead because it has an “information advantage” of no less than 10 achieved flips.
And, we think about, some more romance between lead actors Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt. 2022 is slathered with MCU goodness and we’ve obtained extra for you with the next instalment of Doctor Strange’s journey: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With some more room-time continuum warping and much more analysis into the Time Stone, an unspeakable evil is unleashed on the MCU and we all know that Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) can have an enormous part to play. We’re again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the introduction of a new superhero, biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius. 13 years on, we’re getting Avatar 2 with one other incredible finances of 250 million dollars to carry the story again to life on the large screen. This time spherical, we’re heading back 300 years to the Comanche Nation, a local American tribe, and specializing in one member particularly, a skilled female warrior called Naru (Amber Midthunder). The R1T is a formidable feat of engineering and perseverance, one which immediately poses an unavoidable query: In the traditionally brutal world of automotive manufacturing - anyone remember Studebaker?

Just imagine Sam yelling at a Dalek "YOU CAN'T BE REAL, YOU'RE NOT REAL" in his northern accent and then kicking it with his foot.
(and hurting his foot)
It would be the best thing ever. XD

WIP tag game
Rules: Pick five fragments from your unfinished WIPs and then tag five people to keep it going. Let’s have fun with it and help each other shape those fragments into published fics!
Thanks @insert-witty-user-name-here and @dewdropreader for the tags 💕 I’ve been meaning to confront the multitude of WIPs/fragments/incoherent half-finished sentences in my drafts folder (a chaotic jumble of fic + original works) - this has prompted me to finally start working out what I want to prioritise for 2023! (Urg, time management. Always such a challenge.)
Some self-indulgent fic fragments for various fandoms (Lokius, Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover, Good Omens, Jack x Ten, Clone Wars) under the cut.
Variation on a Theme
AKA the in-progress Lokius fic that I’ve been distressingly slow to update 😩 Life keeps rudely getting in the way.
Longish fragment from Chapter 9 (ok I've only posted four chapters so far... but on a positive note, the final chapter is already written!):
“Thanks, Loki. Guess I wasn’t thinking this morning.” Overthinking would be more accurate. As usual, his relentlessly ticking mind had prevented him from getting more than an hour or two of fitful sleep.
He reached for the tie, preparing to go through the familiar motions of tying the knot, but his brain seemed to have decided to stop communicating with his hands. He felt sluggish, uncoordinated; his fingers moved frustratingly slowly, almost like they were numb with cold. Try as he might, he couldn’t seem to remember how to get the infuriating strip of fabric to resemble a tie, despite having done so thousands of times before.
“Here,” said Loki, taking a step towards Mobius. “Let me help.”
“I’m fine,” he responded irritably, restraining himself (though only just) from swatting Loki’s hands away. He tried again, fingers fumbling with the knot.
“Mobius.” Loki’s voice was gentle, with no trace of his usual imperiousness. Mobius couldn’t remember the last time someone had spoken to him with such kindness. To his shame, he felt tears pricking the back of his eyelids.
He surrendered with a slightly shaky sigh, lowering his hands. Loki moved closer, fingers skimming lightly over the hollow of Mobius’ throat and along his collarbone, pausing for a moment as though silently asking permission before slowly doing up the top few buttons of his shirt. Mobius shivered slightly at the touch, cool despite Loki’s gloved hands. It suddenly seemed unusually difficult to breathe.
Loki made quick work of the tie, but he didn’t draw back right away, humming thoughtfully as he brushed non-existent specks of dust from Mobius’ collar.
The Man Who Wasn’t There:
AKA my in-progress Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover. A foray into a classic fic genre.
Fragment from Chapter 4:
Sam noticed, with a strange sort of detachment, that his hands were shaking. He turned away and gripped the railing until his knuckles went white, staring out into the darkness as he tried to remember how to breathe normally. The night sky was completely black, inky and impenetrable. It took him a moment to figure out why this seemed odd. No stars, he realised. It was as though all the light in the universe had been blotted out…
“Earth to Sam. Do I need to call the men in white coats?”
“I’m fine,” hissed Sam through gritted teeth. “I just… need a minute.”
A Twitch Upon the Thread:
Fragment from the conclusion to my two shorter Good Omens fics, An Unexpected Meeting and An Evening Out. I wrote most of this back in 2019 (what is time), it "just" needs a few more scenes to tie everything together!
“‘Paralysing fear of existing forever’. Twelve letters. Ends with an ‘e’.”
“‘Apeirophobia’,” said Aziraphale promptly, leaning over Crowley’s shoulder for a closer look. “And five across is ‘Gomorrah’, my dear, not… whatever this is supposed to be.” Aziraphale peered more closely at the crossword in a vain attempt to decipher Crowley’s carelessly childlike scrawl. “I’m surprised you didn’t know that one. You were there, after all.”
“Obviously I thought of Gomorrah,” the demon responded peevishly. “Didn’t look right. Five across should have an ‘s’ in it… and maybe a ‘t’?” Crowley squinted, turning the paper upside down.
“For Heaven’s sake, Crowley,” Aziraphale chided fondly, “you know perfectly well that the third circle of Hell is ‘Gluttony’. Now if you’d just let me tidy this up for you –”
Crowley vanished the newspaper in a puff of smoke and twisted round so that he was grinning up at Aziraphale – purely, Aziraphale suspected, to savour the look of indignation on his face.
Only the Dance
Jack travels with the Tenth Doctor post-Journey’s End. Adventure, flirting, angst. As you'd expect.
“A rescue mission?” This felt like familiar territory. “When do we start?”
“We’re already here.” The Doctor was bouncing on his feet and buzzing with energy, clearly impatient to get started. “If you’d stop lazing about and put some clothes on…”
“I was relaxing,” said Jack, rolling his eyes affectionately. “You should try it sometime.” He jumped out of bed, grabbing one of the identical shirts the TARDIS had helpfully replicated for him based on the one he’d been wearing the day he decided to skip town with the Doctor. (The Doctor had offered him free run of the TARDIS’ extensive wardrobe, but Jack had given up after several hours of rummaging produced an assortment of impractical garments such as a Pierrot costume, a Viking helmet, a 1920s sequined flapper dress, and an alarmingly vibrant multi-coloured coat).
Well he couldn’t exactly leave now, could he?
Precipice:
Unsure about this one. I’ll admit I'm not hugely familiar with Star Wars fandom, but I do love Obi-Wan. I watched a curated selection of Clone Wars episodes a while back (recced by my sister) and couldn’t resist drafting an adventure romp with plenty of snark and a generous dollop of angst + hurt/comfort.
“If you have a better plan, Anakin, I’m all ears.”
The droids drew closer, heavy metallic footsteps reverberating through the winding stone tunnels and causing alarmingly large chunks of rubble to rain down from the temple’s ancient ceiling. The noise was deafening, like a stampede of banthas.
“Fine,” Anakin conceded gracelessly, crossing his arms over his chest in a familiar gesture of reluctant acceptance. “We’ll do it your way. But if we end up impaled on those giant spikes Windu told us about, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Master Windu, Anakin,” Obi-Wan reminded him, deftly Force-levitating a stone slab that had been a split second away from colliding with Anakin’s head. “And under such unfortunate circumstances, I very much doubt I would be in a position to say anything at all.”
--
I'm pretty sure the talented writers I'd like to tag have already been tagged, probably multiple times! (@mirilyawrites @cha-melodius @blackbirdofasgard), so this is an open invitation to anyone who stumbles across this and feels like giving it a go! I love hearing about other people's WIPs and the stories behind them 💕

Unconventional writer ask game: answers
It took me a while to get around to this, but here we go! Thanks @knuckleslove for the fun questions and @dewdropreader for the tag!
How long have you been writing fanfiction?
I’ve been writing fic on-and-off for quite a while now (since 2016-ish!), but I only started posting earlier this year.
Do you have a favorite word? (One that you love. Doesn’t necessarily have to be one you use all the time.)
Mellifluous (although I can’t say I’ve used it in a fic yet)
Share a favorite run-on sentence that you’ve written?
I’d never really thought about it before, but I actually don’t think I have any examples of run-on sentences! Not even when writing about characters spiralling into panic or on the verge of a breakdown - which is a bit surprising, since my internal monologue is essentially one giant over-excited and/or meandering run-on sentence.
I do write plenty of LONG sentences though (complete with flagrant overuse of parentheses).
Share a bit of a scene that you’ve written that still gives you FEELS.
Sad feels from On a Wing and a Prayer (there’s lots of comfort in this fic, but this scene was the first one that sprang to mind):
Loki’s voice was hard and unforgiving, but it was beautiful, just as rich and musical Mobius remembered.  If he just agreed to talk, maybe the nightmare projection would turn back into his Loki, use that silver tongue to murmur soothing lies until he finally drifted into an unbroken sleep… Maybe the illusion of comfort would be better after all.
What is your favorite kind of character interaction to write?
*deep breath* where to start?
Interactions between characters who who mask/repress their emotions (often in very different ways). Stoic and self-controlled characters showing cracks of vulnerability or dramatically breaking down after being pushed to their emotional limits is my all-time favourite fictional trope!
See also: mutual unspoken longing. I love writing dialogue where what’s left unsaid carries more emotional weight than the words themselves.
Drawing out parallels and shared experiences between characters who (at first glance) seem completely different from one another, or between characters on opposing sides (I love a compelling Best Enemies dynamic). I never get tired of exploring the moral ambiguity of “good” characters, or the potential for characters cast as villains to deviate from their assigned roles.
Self-doubt + reassurance ❤️
Friendship, devotion, loyalty
Do you have a hyper-specific genre?
Hmm I’m not sure about a hyper-specific genre, but I’ve yet to write a fic that doesn’t include hurt/comfort - or hurt + moments of mutual understanding and emotional connection, at the very least!
Any personal or frequently used tags?
The classics. Angst, hurt/comfort, angst with a happy ending.
Share a joke or funny moment that you’ve written that still makes you laugh.
I’m not sure I’d call these jokes as such, but here’s some dialogue I had fun writing:
From On a Wing and a Prayer (Lokius):
“It was heroic,” Loki insisted heatedly. “Mobius, they were torturing you. And your body is weak and mortal.” He gestured at Mobius to make his point. Mobius chuckled fondly. “For a minute there I thought you were gonna compliment me.”
From The Man Who Wasn’t There (nostalgic Life on Mars/Doctor Who crossover):
“I’m sorry,” Sam interjected incredulously, cutting off the stranger mid-ramble. “Did you just say… my wife?” “I know. That was my reaction too,” the stranger confessed, as though he and Sam were on precisely the same wavelength. “Never thought of you as the marrying kind.”
Best editing tip?
I second @insert-witty-user-name-here and @dewdropreader's pro tips about coming to your own work as a reader. Anything that helps trick your brain into seeing what you’ve written like you’re reading it for the first time, e.g. taking a break for a few days, changing the font, reading on a different device, reading quickly to get a sense of how the narrative flows as a whole (not being able to see the wood for the trees is definitely a thing, at least for me!)
What drives you to write?
I’ve always loved writing, and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at writing fiction. For fanfiction specifically, I write because I’m continually falling heed-over-heels in love with fictional characters and worlds and I need an outlet for all those “what if?” scenarios that won’t stop crowding into my head!
Share something about your writing that you have wished someone would ask you about.
“Is that semi-colon really necessary?”
Where do you draw inspiration?
All over the place! One consistent source of inspiration is that I almost always have favourite quotes to hand that help set the mood of a fic or resonate with the themes. Sometimes these quotes make it into the story itself, if I can figure out how to weave them in organically, e.g. my Gallifrey fic Silver Lining.
What is your immediate reaction when you receive a new comment on a fic?
Pure, unadulterated JOY! Smiling, dancing, throwing confetti!!! I’m always so touched when people take the time to leave comments, and I’ll never not be ridiculously excited to see a new comment pop up in my inbox.
What is your biggest challenge in writing?
My inner critic looking over my shoulder while I write
Falling into the trap of obsessing over sentence structure/individual paragraphs at the expense of the story as a whole (I’m trying really hard to train myself out of this – I’d love to be able to write FASTER and in a more relaxed, “stream of consciousness” way, at least for the first draft)
What story or scene are you most proud of?
I’m proud of completing my Lokius story On a Wing and a Prayer, the first fic I’ve posted chapter-by-chapter. While it isn’t all that long in terms of the overall word count, the real breakthrough for me was that I started posting before I’d completed the later chapters, which meant I didn’t have my usual “safety net” of obsessively editing the story as a whole before sharing it. My draft for Chapter 6 comprised “they escape - something bad happens”, so I was excited that I managed to work out the nature of the “something bad” and write that chapter from scratch over a fairly busy fortnight (which for me counts as record time!!)
1-2 sentence preview from your current WIP?? (Only if you are willing.)
Saving this one for last. I’m cheating a bit with my answer as I’ve currently got three “active” WIPs on the go. My focus right now is my Lokius fic Variation On a Theme, but I definitely plan on finishing the others (eventually)!
From Variation on a Theme, Chapter 3 – in which Director Mobius meets President Loki:
Loki smiled, sharp and sudden, white teeth gleaming. It was the same smile Mobius had seen in the reels from the Sacred Timeline (mischievous, beguiling, utterly irresistible), and yet it wasn’t the same. The spark of joy dancing in those mesmerising eyes had vanished, replaced by something steely and dangerous. Loki’s expression was cold, his smile slightly unhinged. Not for the first time, Mobius wondered how much of this “teetering on the edge of sanity” façade was a construct, a calculated intimidation tactic, and how much was genuine. Right now, he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to find out.
From The Man Who Wasn’t There, Chapter 3:
“Are you trying to tell me,” said Gene slowly, with an exaggerated patience that Sam knew from experience didn’t herald anything good, “that my DI is a Martian?”
And lastly… the conclusion to my little series of Good Omens fics (just two very short fics so far, but the next instalment will be longer). Title = A Twitch Upon the Thread:
“No, angel. Nothing like that.” Crowley sat up, tried to smile. “The fire and brimstone stuff is mostly for show. The worst thing about hell is that it’s got no style.” “Tell me truthfully, Crowley. Is that really the worst thing?” Crowley’s expression changed suddenly, like a mask had fallen away. “Not even close, angel.”
