People requested I make another post, this time detailing what affects Cove's Step 3 appearance, so that's what I'm doing today!
My previous post contains more details about the specific mechanics behind it, but the short and sweet of it is that things that your MC notices/picks up/favors/focuses on will influence Cove's appearance, but there are a couple that aren't like that and will change him anyway. If you want to get a different Cove than you had before without using the Cove Creator, try choosing different taste/aesthetic-based options, though keep in mind that there isn't a guarantee that it'll completely change him.
As for going through without using the Cove Creator, the only moments in Step 2 that don't have anything that will affect Step 3 Cove's look are Wave and Summerwork, so feel free to pick whatever you want in both of those. Everything else has at least something.
All that said, here's the list of every chance you have to change Step 3 Cove's appearance:
Step 2 Intro
If MC allows Derek and Cove to dig into the fruit bouquet {note that this will give Cove +1 warm points}:
You took a pineapple skewer. [no bracelet(s) on left wrist]
You took a grape skewer. [black wristband on left wrist]
You took a strawberry skewer. [no bracelet(s) on left wrist]
You took a melon skewer. [chain bracelet and beaded wrap bracelet with jewel on left wrist]
When Kyra asks the MC for recommendations for places to eat:
You shrugged. [spiky hair] {note that this will give Cove +1 cold points}
"Not really." [middle-parted hair] {note that this will give Cove +1 warm points}
"Sure, I have a couple of favorites." [no change}
You nodded. [no change}
If the MC agrees to give Kyra restaurant suggestions:
"The Chinese restaurant." [spiky hair]
"The tropical themed place." [ponytail hair]
You insisted Cove contribute to the decision. [middle-parted hair]
You insisted Kyra decide. [ponytail hair]
When Kyra asks the MC what kind of drink they'd like
"Just water." -> "Lemon." [white, yellow, and green striped shirt]
"Just water." -> "No." [black shirt]
"Soda." -> "Cola." [black shirt]
"Soda." -> "Orange." [white, yellow, and green striped shirt]
"Soda." -> "Grape." [white shirt with blue and white gradient button-up]
"Soda." -> "Lemon lime." [white, yellow, and green striped shirt]
"Soda." -> "Root beer." [black shirt]
"Soda." -> "Ginger ale." [white shirt with blue and white gradient button-up]
"Milk." (if MC is not vegan) -> "Just plain." [black shirt]
"Milk." (if MC is not vegan) -> "Chocolate." [white shirt with blue and white gradient button-up]
"Milk." (if MC is not vegan) -> "Strawberry." [white, yellow, and green striped shirt]
"Milk." (if MC is not vegan) -> "Soy." [black shirt]
"Soy milk." (if MC is vegan) [black shirt]
"Juice." -> "Orange." [white, yellow, and green striped shirt]
"Juice." -> "Apple." [white shirt with blue and white gradient button-up]
"Juice." -> "Lemonade." [black shirt]
"Coffee." -> "Iced with cream." [white, yellow, and green striped shirt]
"Coffee." -> "Hot with cream." [white shirt with blue and white gradient button-up]
"Coffee." -> "Iced, no cream." [white shirt with blue and white gradient button-up]
"Coffee." -> "Hot, no cream." [black shirt]

You wondered how Cove/Derek might feel about your outfit. (if MC is not going alone and is crushing on Cove/Derek) -> You didn't want to look like you were taking this too seriously. [no change]
You wondered how Cove/Derek might feel about your outfit. (if MC is not going alone and is crushing on Cove/Derek) -> You wanted him to see you in a new light. [black stud earrings] (if your Step 3 Cove currently has the spiky hair) or [silver huggie earrings] (if your Step 3 Cove currently has the ponytail hair)
Step 2 Ending
If you didn't play Family nor chosen any options that change Cove's pants: [distressed blue jeans]
In addition to all of these, if you've noticed that a third bracelet on Cove's left wrist is missing, it's because you can only give it to him in the Step 3 intro. It's a black bracelet with a weave-like pattern that the MC can give to him if they chose to buy Cove a gift rather than give him something that couldn't be bought.
The only requirement necessary is that Cove has to have worn a bracelet of any kind during Step 2, meaning the shark tooth wrap bracelet on his right wrist, the pink beaded bracelet on his left wrist, or the brown and tan right wristband. The option won't appear among the potential bought gifts otherwise.
If your Step 3 Cove is already wearing a bracelet on his left wrist, he'll remove it to replace it with the one you bought for him, so don't do this if you like the one he's already wearing more.
And that's all! Whether you wanted to figure out how to make your ideal Cove look without the Cove Creator or were simply curious as to which Step 2 options affect his appearance, now you know!

Mind-Clearing Grapefruit Marmalade
Tumblr media
Grapefruit is a cleansing, purifying fruit. It can help cleanse the mind of doubt and negativity while helping keep your thoughts pure and focused.
As someone who actually loves marmalade, I created a very simple marmalade recipe that needs only one grapefruit and a bit of sugar. This recipe can help cleanse your mind while both cooking and eating it. You can add whatever other favors you want to it (lemon would be great, as it has energetic properties) and incorporate their uses in it as well.
Onto the recipe!
You will need:
One grapefruit: Cleansing, purifying
3/4 cup of sugar: Invoking sweetness
1 tsp of vanilla extract: Self-appreciation
A pot
A vegetable peeler
A knife
A cutting board
Instructions:
Cleanse your kitchen.
Wash your fruit thoroughly and use moon water to rinse it off. You can also use a sat scrub to cleanse it further, both spiritually and physically. Once that's over, peel one large strip of grapefruit peel. Set aside.
Cut your fruit into wheel slices and poke out any seeds. Using the tip of your knife, carefully, carefully, cut off the peel and pith. Too much of these will turn your marmalade very bitter but make decent cleansing tea.
In your pot, add your zest strip, fruit, and sugar. Stir it well until all of the fruit is covered in sugar. Over medium-high heat, cook it all down while stirring constantly. Mash up the fruit with a fork or potato masher until all of the fruit is liquified and as smooth as you can get it. (This is when you can add powdered herbs, lemon pieces, etc)
Reduce heat to low and cook at a simmer until it can coat the back of a spoon thickly. This should take about 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Remove the peel of zest and perform the fridge test. This is done by placing a collop of marmalade on a small plate and sticking it in the fridge or freezer until it's completely cooled. If you want it thicker, continue cooking the marmalade. (This is also when you want to remove any chunks like herbs or lemon chunks)
Once it's to your liking, remove the marmalade off of the heat and cool SLIGHTLY before putting it in a heat-safe container with a lid.
This should keep in the fridge for about a month. It's tasty on toast, ice cream, or as an additive to a citrus cake! It can also be a good offering for homesteading, nature, or fruit-related dieties. The scraps of grapefruit can be used in tea or even candied.
As always everyone, blessed be, and happy witching <3

Citrus and Praliné Kings' Crown
Tumblr media
This year's Kings' Crown is a celebration of its Southern France origins, as it is filled and glazed with lemon and bergamot marmalades I brought back from Menton this Summer. And it could only be paired with best of pralinés, the Luxury version I made at Christmas. This Citrus and Praliné Kings' Crown is fit for Queens and Kings indeed! Happy Epiphany!
Ingredients (makes 1 brioche):
4 cups strong white flour
1/3 cup caster sugar
4 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
2 teaspoons salt
1 lemon
4 large eggs
½ cup milk
1 cup unsalted butter, cut into small chunks
1 heaped tablespoon Confiture de Citron de Menton (Lemon Marmalade)
1 heaped tablespoon Confiture de Bergamote de Menton (Bergamot Marmalade)
2 tablespoons Luxury Praliné
a fève*
1 egg, lightly beaten
½ tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon Confiture de Citron de Menton (Lemon Marmalade)
1 teaspoon Confiture de Bergamote de Menton (Bergamot Marmalade)
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon pearl sugar
The day before, combine strong white flour, caster sugar, yeast and salt (they shouldn’t touch at this stage) in the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the hook attachment. Grate in the zest of the whole lemon. Turn on low speed until well-combined.
Turn on medium speed and add the eggs and milk, and mix 4 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough will be quite sticky at this stage. Gradually add butter, a few chunks at a time until fully incorporated. When all the butter is incorporated, increase speed to high and mix, 4 to 6 minutes, until dough is soft, shiny and slaps the sides of the bowl.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly to form a ball. Pop the dough ball in a lightly oiled large bowl and cover with cling film. Let rise at room temperature for an hour.
Again, turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly. Shape into a ball, and return dough to the lightly oiled bowl. Cover with cling film, and prove once more a couple of hours or until the dough has tripled in size. Place the bowl in the refrigerator overnight. The dough will continue proving, which will give the brioche a light and airy texture.
In the morning, remove the bowl from the refrigerator, and allow the dough to come back to room temperature, for 1 hour.
Line a baking tray with baking paper. Set aside.
Remove cling film and turn dough out on a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Roll two of the portions into large rectangles onto a lightly floured surface.
Spread Lemon and Bergamot marmaldes onto the first dough rectangle, leaving at least an inch on the outward edge, and roll it tightly like you would a Swiss roll, seal the seam, and gently roll into a long “sausage”. Set aside. Repeat with the second dough rectangle, and generously spreading Luxury Praliné onto it, before rolling it, too. Hide the fève* in one of the “sausages”!
Place both of them vertically on the work surface, pinching the end of both of them firmly together. Twist, and shape into a crown. Place on prepared baking tray. Leave to prove for 30 minutes to one hour in a warm, draught-free room.
Whisk the egg and milk together.
Preheat oven to 190°C/375°F. Once the brioche has risen, brush thoroughly with egg wash. Bake at 190°C/375°F  for 35 minutes, until a nice golden brown colour.
Meanwhile, combine Lemon and Bergamot marmalades with water in a small saucepan. Warm over a low flame until dissolved, well-blended and syrup-y. Set aside.
Remove Citrus and Praliné Kings’ Crown from the oven. Immediately and generously brush all over with lemon and bergamot syrup. Sprinkle liberally with pearl sugar. Transfer to serving plate and let cool for a bit before serving and finding out who’ll be crowned Queen or King! It pairs nicely with chilled Cider.
*A fève is a tiny porcelain figurine traditionally hidden in Epiphany Galette des Rois or Kings’ Brioche in France. Whoever finds it in their slice is Queen or King for the day. Before it was a figurine, a dried fava bean (”fève”, in French) used to be hidden, hence the name.

BEST HAMANTASCHEN FILLING POLL: RESULTS (Happy Pollrim!)
Tumblr media
The results of this poll are in! As a professional statistician (they really pay me!) and data viz expert, let me disclaim: a pie chart -- even a deluxe exploded one like this -- is almost never the right choice of figure for your data. Make sure to only use it for unordered qualitative data describing proportions of a whole - a bar chart is usually the better option for everything else, such as opinions polled by Likert (strongly agree, agree, etc), binary responses, anything where you can vote for more than one option, or raw numbers. Despite how ubiquitous media would have you believe they are, pie charts are mostly bad for analysis.
Happy Purim!
Image description and further mishnah under cut. (Image desc also in alt.)
[ID: A figure consisting of two pie charts, together graphically representing the results of a Tumblr poll asking respondents for their favorite hamantaschen filling. The title of the figure is "5783 Hamantaschen Tumblr Poll Results: Hamantaschart". Each slice of the pies are filled with an image of the filling in question, such as images of apricots in the apricot slice. The slices are also labeled with their names and percentages. The first chart represents 91% of results: Raspberry at 23%, Apricot at 21%, Poppyseed at 15%, Chopped nuts at 7%, Pomegranate at 6%, Cherry at 6%, Strawberry at 6%, Blackberry at 5%, and Mango at 4%. A slice labeled "Other (did not specify)" represents 3% of the chart and is filled by an image of Among Us. A slice labeled Other, representing 6%, explodes into the second pie chart. The second pie chart contains Chocolate at 2.59%, Lekvar/Prunes at 0.86%, Nutella at 0.96%, Apple at 0.48%, Lemon curd at 0.29%, and the following all at 0.1% each: Dates, Halva, Marmalade, Birthday Cheesecake, Nougat, and Quince. A final slice is Figs at 0.19%. The data label for chocolate also reads "A tem far de goyim imo but live your best life. I'm a chart, not a simpsons joke." The figure also contains two inserts. The first is a box reading "Fig 1. Two-part pie chart representing votes for best hamantaschen filling, from 1041 votes cast over a period of one week & 156 reblogs." The second is a box located next to the final slice of the second pie, which represents figs. The box reads "Fig 2. Two votes for figs."]
As expected, the canonical Big Three of Apricot, Raspberry, and Poppyseed held the majority between them, totalling 58.3% of all votes. The identity of the Other flavors were recorded by hand; I marked down the notes as they came in and double-checked them at the completion of the poll. This poll readily acknowledges that there is no means available by which to suss out double-dip fraud (if a person voted for one of the nine available choices but only tagged a non-available choice). If you put more than one non-given choice in your tags or reply (e.g., blueberry AND lemon curd) I chose the one that made it so I had to make fewer new slices (lemon curd).
Prunes fans, I'm sorry. Please noisemaker me.

It’s winter, and around here that means citrus season! Many of my neighbors are giving away fruit. I just picked up a bag of tangerines, still wet from the rain. To make room for them it’s time for a batch of Fruit Bowl Marmalade!
Fruit Bowl Marmalade is the easiest marmalade I know how to make. Start with whatever dry, sad citrus you have in your fruit bowl. If you like you can use good fruit, but you don’t have to. Combine with sugar and water, boil it up to 220F/104C, and you have marmalade!
The proportions are 1 kg fruit : 900 g sugar : 800 g water. If you have a scale but no metric (at which point I’m imagining you using an old fashioned weighted balance) then try 30 oz fruit, 27 oz sugar, and 24 oz water. Slice your oranges (with whatever limes, lemons, or other citrus is in your bowl) into thin slices. You can use your favorite knife, but I use the slicing disc on my food processor because it’s fast and easy. Then put them in a big pot with the sugar and water. I started out using my pasta & stews pot but now I have a jam pan (very fancy!). Cook it until it’s nice and thick. If you have a thermometer aim for 220 F or 104 C because the sugar sets nicely at that temperature, but this is chunky marmalade and as long as it seems thick enough it will still taste good on toast.
I’ll probably can some of this in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes, but marmalade keeps beautifully in the fridge so you can skip that step if you’d like and just put it in jars.
And hey presto! You’ve gone from a fruit bowl of sad citrus to several jars of homemade marmalade. A magical transformation from almost-compost to preserves that may impress your friends!

Patented and Improved Methods of Preserving and Canning Fruits and Vegetables, Pickling, Making of Jams, Vinegar, Cider and Unfermented Drinks: Also the Crystallizing and Candying of Fruits, etc / With Cook Book of Over 400 Pages Comprising Receipts from Celebrated Chefs of This Country and Europe (1890) by the Northwestern Publishers and Patent Right Specialists is one of our older cookbooks, and it's a hefty one of over 500 pages. The book touts itself as having the "most modern and improved methods known" for preserving food and has sourced its recipes from both the United States and Europe "at considerable cost." Note: $3 in 1890 is about $100 in 2023.
Featured here are two pages of recipes from the section on Jellies, Jams and Preserves, as well as a page from the index showing sections of recipes for sick people and for infants and children, among other topics. A transcript of the recipes is below the read more.
An interesting fact: On the copyright page for this book, there is a line that reads "As members have all pledges themselves to secrecy, they must not publish or circulate methods, or use for business purposes, under penalty of law."
The Browne Popular Culture Library (BPCL), founded in 1969, is the most comprehensive archive of its kind in the United States.  Our focus and mission is to acquire and preserve research materials on American Popular Culture (post 1876) for curricular and research use. ...has become considerably evaporated, test it frequently by dipping a few drops on a plate to cool; and when it jellies sufficiently remove at once from the fire. A much larger quantity of juice will be needed for jelly prepared in this manner than when sugar is used, about two quarts of juice being required for one-half pint of jelly. Such jelly, however, has a most delicious flavor, and is excellent served with grains. Diluted with water, it forms a most pleasing beverage.
Apple and Pear Marmalade
Peel seven pounds of tart apples and put them into the preserving kettle with a pint of cold water ; peel the yellow rind of four lemons, and add same to the apples. Boil it to a pulp, then squeeze in the juice of the lemons and add four pounds of sugar, and boil the marmalade from one-half to three-quarters of an hour until it has the proper "form" and seal in your glasses.
To put Fruit in Jelly.
Prepare some jelly, either from apples or oranges when boiled gins to cool stoned to the proper consistency, and add to it as it be dates, seeded raisins, pitted cherries or other small fruits.
Quince Jelly.
Clean thoroughly good sound fruit, and slice thin. Put into a double boiler with one cup of water for each five pounds of fruit, and cook until softened. Express the juice, and proceed as with other jellies, allowing three-fourths of a pound of sugar to each pint of juice. Tart or sweet apples may be used with quinces in equal proportions, and make a jelly of more pleasant flavor than quinces used alone. The seeds of quinces contain considerable gelatinous substance, and should be cooked with the quince for jelly making.
Plum Jelly.
Use damsons or greengages. Stone, and make them in the same way as for berry and other small fruit jellies.
Peach marmalade.
With a rough cloth rub the fur from sound ripe peaches. Cut them in halves, taking out the stones, and crack about half of them and take out the kernels ; pour boiling water over the kernels, and rub off the skins; then cut them lengthwise in small strips, weigh the peaches, put them in preserving kettle, and add to them three-fourths of a pound of sugar to each pound of peaches ; set on back of stove where it will heat slowly ; when it boils stir constantly and let it boil half an hour ; when it has boiled twenty-five minutes put in the kernels you have cut in strips, and boil it five minutes longer. Put the marmalade in jars, and when cold clip a white paper in brandy and lay over it and seal tight.
Crab Apple Jelly.
Wash the apples, cut them in small pieces, put them in preserving-kettle with just enough water to cover them. Set them on the stove and let them cook to a pulp ; then pour all into the jelly bag, and let the juice drain through them (do not squeeze the bag), and to each pint of juice add one pound of sugar and boil together, removing all scum, for twenty minutes, or until a little of the juice cooled forms a jelly ; when partly cooled put it in your cups, clip a piece of white paper in brandy and lay over it, and seal tight.

Mayapple Jelly Recipe
Here’s another Appalachian granny recipe to fuel your tastebuds! Make sure to check out my post on the Mayapple in my Herbalism section for information about this plant.
Tumblr media
Mayapples have a very unique flavor! Most people describe them as tasting like a mix of grape and pear, with a slight citrus hint. The fully ripe fruit can be used in marmalades, jellies, and drinks, but the rest of the plant and unripe fruit is poisonous. Ripe mayapples will be soft to the touch. The skin can become slightly wrinkled (think prune-y!) and it will have a strong odor that rubs off on your fingers (and attracts raccoons/opossums).
Tumblr media
Ingredients:
2 cups mayapple slices
3 cups water
1/8 cup lemon juice
3  1/2 cups sugar
3 ounces liquid fruit pectin
Instructions:
Wash ripe mayapples, then cut away stem and blossom ends, and any waste parts. Remove seeds. Cut fruit into pieces and place in large kettle with water to cover.
Bring to a boil, then simmer until fruit is tender, mashing during cooking.
Strain juice through cheesecloth (should result in at least 1  3/4 cups mayapple juice). Add lemon juice and sugar to strained juice. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly as you stir in the liquid fruit pectin.
Continue to boil and stir constantly until “jelly stage” is reached (220 F, or dip a spoon into boiling mixture and let it run off side of spoon.
When it separates into two distinct drops that run together into “sheet” off edge of spoon, it is finished and should be taken off heat.)
Remove jelly from heat, skim foam from top, and pour into hot, sterilized jelly glasses. Seal at once with lid, and process jars in hot water bath.

Happy Valentine’s Day (or late Valentine’s Day depending lol) There’s something I’ve been wondering since the last chapter of CDAP- what would happen if Vidie and Spam had tried the other Addison teas?
Ok so if they tried the other teas I think it would have gone a bit differently.
Spamton would probably jokingly rate the flavors and be a bit honest about how each had changed and lamented on whether he missed the old flavors or not. I think he would leave it vague if he did or not, both so Vidie wouldn't tell and to not hurt Vidie if he avoided doing so when he eventually got to her tea. Vidie would drink the teas and feel a lot of remorse with each of them. Despite Spamton not really hating the new flavors, Vidie may have had a worse reaction cause well... The ads spent years actively building resentment toward each other. They of course missed each other but part of why they never tried to reconcile outside of Spam coming back was bitterness. Vidie would taste a weird and overwhelming combination of the nice flavor she remembers and the unsavory ones they are currently still working through. Spamton missed them a lot, and his pallet is more pliable. To be honest, it would depend on the day on how well the tea tasted, the chapter happen to be a day he was feeling very fondly of Vidie.
It would end the same, with Vidie and Spamton tasting each other's teas and becoming a bit emotional but otherwise I feel like it would give Vidie some chip on his shoulder that they shared this little gossip moment. As for the taste of each tea to Vidie and Spam:
Banner Tea: It's watered down for Vidie currently, a bitterness kinda like alcohol with a faint sweetness reminding her how it should taste. Maybe she can taste more of it with every sip or maybe it's just hope. Once upon a time it had the playful taste of blackberries mixed with it but it's pretty dull now. A good tea to think with still.
For Spamton it's the opposite, sweet like you tried to cover up its naturally bitter taste but overdid it which makes it all the worse. The saving grace is the taste of blueberries, which almost feel like it was brewed in the juice. It tastes like an unripe fruit all things considered and he continues to drink it to imagine what it could be like if you gave it more time to grow.
Surv Tea: To Vidie it's Lemon ginger tea with way too much ginger, like you took a bite of ginger and then drank hot lemon water. It tastes over-brewed like you missed a mark by waiting too long, it's got that spice-like burn that only lingers for a second, reminding you that you messed up even if it isn't saying so. Can easily be fixed with some sweetness and some ice.
To Spam, it's your average black tea with lemon in it, but sugar instead of honey. It for all intents and purposes tastes the same as it did before but the sweetness seems more artificial and he can somehow taste the bitterness from the lemon rind. It's not unappetizing but it's disappointing cause it could've been better if you just switched a few things around.
Audi Tea: Vidie knows it's not supposed to be this watered down. Think of sweet iced tea with an orange slice dropped in, citrus that doesn't exactly add a twang but still enhances the flavor. Now imagine that it didn't brew long enough and the ice has melted and the orange wasn't juicy enough. It's palatable but it tastes like something that would've been perfect if you just gave it more attention. It's still pretty refreshing so I guess it's not that bad...
This is the sweetest tea Spamton has ever tasted. It's like orange marmalade and passion tea had a baby. It's not bad but it's hard to take in one sitting like you'd start to feel ill cause you or rather Spam just isn't used to it anymore. The orangey taste isn't defined anymore either which makes the sweetness just that much more overbearing. It's not the tea's fault but it's gonna take some time until Spam can handle it all again.

CITRUS FAMILY
Where do citrus fruits come from?
All of the citrus fruits are from the family Rutaceae. This family is also known as the rue family and contains flowering plants that generally have a strong scent. The genus Citrus includes oranges, grapefruits, limes and lemons. These fruits have been cultivated since ancient times. They have probably originated from Australia, New Caledonia and New Guinea, although some research points to them originating in Southeast Asia. Many of the species are hybrids and there is speculation that even the wild true-breeding species are actually hybrids originally.
What do citrus fruits do?
All of the citrus fruits are noted for their fragrance. This is due to limonoids and flavonoids (both of which have strong antioxidant and antibacterial properties). They can help prevent kidney stones, as they contain high levels of citrate. Lemons are the highest, drinking diluted lemon juice daily has been shown to decrease kidney stone formation.
The vitamin C content of citrus fruits is legendary, and regular consumption has been found to decrease your cardiovascular and heart disease risks, whilst increasing life expectancy. Vitamin C is also a natural anti-histamine, preventing histamine release and aiding in its detoxification.  Vitamin C functions as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress.
How do I use citrus fruits?
Use the peel! It’s full of antioxidants and can help fight free radicals, balance blood sugar levels and support thyroid health. You can buy candied peel for desserts here.
Juice, have a look at our smoothie and juice recipes.
Mix with water, a slice or 2 of a citrus fruit in hot water first thing in the morning will help to alkalise your system and aid in cleansing.
What fruits do Real Foods sell from the citrus family?
Tumblr media
Lemons are probably a hybrid between a bitter orange (C. Aurantium) and a citron (C. Medica). Although it could be a hybrid involving limes! They contain high amounts of citric acid, around 5-6% of total weight. Initially discovered in India, lemons were avilable during the Roman Empire's heydays but were not widely cultivated until the Arabs introduced them into Italy in the 8th century.  Colombus took them to America and it was then that their amazing effects on scurvy were noticed. They are highly valued for their juice and high vitamin C content.
Limes - C. Aurantifolia are so called because they have long been confused with lemons. The name is derived from ‘limun’. The 2 most popularly cultivated limes are the Mexican or key Lime and the Persian lime. Limes were unknown in Europe before the crusaders and were probably imported from Palestine after Arabs had introduced them there. Their incredible flavour and high essential oil content is used widely in cooking and is popular for marinades.
Tumblr media
Tangerines – C. Tangerina is probably derived from C. Oculata. Less sour and sweeter than oranges, the name is derived from Tangiers which grew them widely at one time. The red-orange skin is usually what separates them from mandarins.
Satsumas – C. Unshiu are probably of Japanese origin and are very easy to peel. Sweet, their nickname the “Christmas orange”  is because they are very popular as Christmas treat in the U.K.
Sweet oranges are known as Citrus Sinensis and are a hybrid between a pomelo (C. grandi s or C. maxima) and a mandarin (C. reticulata). There is no history of the orange being grown in the wild and it’s thought to have been selected in China or northern India from their cultivation of mandarins and pomelos. Oranges have been grown from at least 2500 B.C.E in China.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) are a hybrid between lemons and oranges (it’s why they’re sometimes called orange  bergamot and others  call them lemon bergamots).  They are relatives of sour oranges and are famously unpalatable. Similar to Seville in the sense they are prized for their zest, their flavour and pith for marmalade making and their scent. They do not taste very nice however! Bergamots are only available occasionally through the year.

This is just me being me....
Tumblr media
Soooo! Levi wants to go shopping at the local farmers market. He wants to pick up some tasty food and maybe stop by a place on the way home to grab some plants for the garden.
Which tasty stalls do you stop by and what plants will you guys grab for your garden?
Tumblr media
He's eyeing those deals.
CAT! My darling! I must apologize to you (and others) for letting things sit in my inbox.
Tumblr media
Part of me just gets distracted, or forces myself to finish my work (not often lol) before interacting. Another part literally feels like I can't do justice to things people send me.... I'll work on that.
(I have no excuse for being so late in tag games except, distractions lol)
Anyway! Let me promote myself LOL I'll take a little inspiration from the Farmers Market fic I wrote a while ago. (this is also slightly self indulgent)
I think you'd have similar tastes and your favorites of course... Am I about to go overboard?
As far as fruit, I stand by Levi liking apples (I have a fic for that too hehe), and cherries, and fresh navel oranges. He's always got an apple or orange for lunch, or snacks on a bowl of cherries when they're in season. And loving apples as well, you're known to make tasty treats like tarts or muffins or crisps, and Levi always has his share.
You can't pass up the pineapple as well, or the blueberries and strawberries in season. Your freezer is full for smoothie ingredients. (Imma make a HC about everyones favorite fruit sometime)
Moving on to veggies, you stock up for salads and quick snacks. Bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, yes! All of it! How can you pass up a 1.5 pound organic zucchini for $1? You can't!
You like winter squash as well like butternut for soups or acorn for stuffing...or both for muffins or casseroles! (I have recipes!)
Also potatoes for baking or mashing yourself. And they last forever.
Okay but the zucchini? You have to visit the cheese stall and get asiago or mozzarella to shred on the zucchini and pop it in the oven for 15 minutes. SO GOOD. Also feta for salads. Cheese is the bulk of your dairy as it's coconut or almond milk in your fridge.
The tea stall! Loose leaf, baggies, give us the usual black or green tea. Chamomile or sage tea, cinnamon and honey lemon, and fruity flavors once in a while like pomegranate or pear mango. :D
Oh and dried fruit and nuts! Levis a weirdo and likes dried beets and such. He can have those. The hazelnuts too. But you both like raw almonds and the nutty granola blend for days you have oatmeal and want a crunch. Sometimes you just use it as a cereal base and throw in the blueberries! Dried fruit like mango or papaya wind up in your bag too. And those apple slices!
We can't forget the bread! You have to watch it here more than anywhere. Rye or pumpernickel loafs, small rolls of sesame seed or garlic herb. Sometimes they're for breakfast and sometimes for lunch.
How about your honey and fresh jams and peanut/almond butters? Gotta have something to put between those sandwiches! Apricot preserves, orange marmalade, classic strawberry jam. (Jam spreads better then jelly!)
You know I don't know where you're going to put all this stuff LOL
Sometimes you also grab eggs, and look at the non food items like the crafty handmade woodwork or coasters (no more coasters!) or fresh bar soap like lavender!
BTW if anyone is waiting for me to throw meats in there, you're going to have to do it yourself haha sorry
Oh wait but maybe you splurge on pasta? There's so many varieties! Maybe you go for lemon garlic linguini, or sun dried tomato fettuccine. And pasta sauce made with organic tomatoes, garlic, onion, basil and olive oil. YUM!
And if you go early and don't eat breakfast, you'll get it there. Strawberry mango smoothies, waffles, guava or chocolate empanadas?? (You eat healthy all the time, it's okay to not once in a while!)
Maybe you get lunch to go like woodfire pizza, or veggie wraps and rice and beans. Yes, you have lots of food, but after lugging it around and putting it away who wants to cook? You need to take it easy for a minute!
As far as plants, more zucchini, you can never have enough. Tomatoes and whatever lettuce variety is your favorite, and fresh herbs like basil, rosemary and parsley.
Fruits are a little more tricky I think, but a fig plant can go indoors or outdoors, and fresh figs are a nice treat! Lemons and limes are a good option too, and you can use them for some flavored water or to keep cut apples fresh :D Maybe if there's room blueberries too, or plums. (and apples)
So, what do you think? You going to the market with Levi? What are YOU getting??

Backyard Fruit Recollections
Among the early memories of my grandparents’ home in Laguna Beach was their backyard. Their lot in the village was small, about 6000 square feet but nicely sized for their 700 square foot cottage built in the 1940’s.
Even on a small lot, Ralph and Jean Bell had five backyard fruit trees. The mission fig sent horizontal branches sprawling in a rear corner, creating mysterious, cool shade. Orange and lemon trees were essential for my grandmother’s legendary orange marmalade. They had one of each.
Two stone fruit trees added privacy along the back fence. I recall the delicate ‘Babcock’ white peach. Dishes of sliced peaches were a seasonal dessert. Occasionally, my grandfather would hand churn peach ice cream for a Sunday summer dinner. I planted a ‘Babcock’ peach in my backyard to reclaim that memory. The other stone fruit tree was a yellow peach or a Blenheim apricot.
Then there was a sweet little tree, child-sized at about three feet as I recall. It was a strawberry guava, producing sweet-tart red fruit. My grandmother made a lovely pink-tinted guava jelly. About fifteen years ago I planted a strawberry guava tree in a warm corner of my backyard. That tree now reaches up ten feet and produces several crops each year. I make strawberry guava jam and puree. I think of my grandmother. Forty years of fruit came from those trees and my grandfather maintained them until his death.
My grandparents’ backyard fruit was a testimony to what can be done on a small city lot. Fruit trees had both ornamental and food value. Artistically arranged, the fruit trees created garden rooms, a sense of mystery and shady hideouts for children.

What is orange marmalade jam?
Orange marmalade is a type of jam or fruit preserves made from oranges, specifically peel and juice. The distinctive characteristic of orange marmalade is the inclusion of thin strips of orange peel, giving it a unique texture and flavor. Here are the key features of orange marmalade:
Ingredients: The main ingredients in orange marmalade are oranges, sugar, and sometimes pectin. Pectin is a natural carbohydrate found in fruits that helps the jam to set.
Preparation: To make orange marmalade, oranges are typically washed, sliced, and then cooked with sugar. The cooking process allows the fruit and sugar mixture to thicken and set into a spreadable consistency.
Orange Peel: One distinctive aspect of orange marmalade is the use of orange peel. The peel is often cut into thin strips or small pieces, contributing a slightly bitter and chewy texture to the jam.
Flavor Profile: Orange marmalade has a sweet and tangy flavor, with a hint of bitterness from the orange peel. The combination of sweetness and citrusy notes makes it a popular choice for spreading on toast, pastries, or as an accompaniment to various dishes.
Variations: While traditional orange marmalade is made with sweet oranges, some variations may include other citrus fruits like lemons or grapefruits. Some recipes also incorporate additional flavors, such as ginger or whiskey.
Uses: Orange marmalade is commonly used as a spread on bread, toast, or scones. It can also be used as a glaze for meats, added to sauces, or used in baking for flavoring cakes, cookies, or pastries.
Orange marmalade is appreciated for its unique combination of sweet and citrus flavors, making it a versatile and popular choice for various culinary applications.
