Note
since you talked about Izumi in some of your posts (like Dad!Zuko and Mom!Mai and their “conquering Ba Sing Se adventure”) and the Hou-Tong/Izumi beef, I was wondering if you were open to make Gaang kids headcanons.
and if you were, can I request Kya and Izumi headcanons on their friendship etc?
Ok so, anon refers to this post and this other post in the ask, FYI.
But yes, I absolutely am down to make adult gaang/Gaang kids’ headcanons of any kind. So if y’all want any headcanon of that kind feel free to send an anon!
Anyway, back to the ask. I absolutely love the potential of Kya and Izumi’s dynamic. But since I love angst, here’s some little HCs with p a i n.
Izumi and Kya are roughly the same age, maybe Izumi is a year older than Kya.
Ever since they could sit straight, they’ve been inseparable. And as kids, with the republic city construction, they used to be constantly together
I headcanon that Izumi was more responsible and protective of Kya, while Kya saw Izumi as her idol, because you know, pretty firebending princess who punches everyone who looks at Kya the wrong way
I also like to think that Izumi was Kya’s gay awakening in her teens, but never acted on it because Izumi was straight and uninterested. Also, I HC that Izumi had a thing with Bumi, but that’s another story
Anyways. Since Izumi most likely had Iroh at like, 20, Kya would always hang out with Iroh as his fun aunt, doing mischief around etc.
But, and let’s go to the angsty part, I also HC that Kya and Izumi kind of began losing contact once 30s approached. Because you know, Kya was always traveling, and Izumi had crown princess duties to partake in.
Also, given that Zuko was Fire Lord and kind of not as involved in republic city as he used to be, the FN royal family did not hang out with the rest of the gaang as often, and Izumi ended up being often excluded from the drama etc. nothing unfixable, but stuff that definitely hurt Izumi.
I also feel like Izumi (and parents) was always invited to all of the gaang’s and their kids’ milestones, like weddings, ceremonies etc.
And when in 158AG Sokka died protecting Korra, Zuko and Izumi were at the funeral despite their problems in the fire nation.
But, and here we reach the most angsty part, a year later it was Mai who died, of an illness that had taken her like, five years prior. Of course Zuko and Izumi were distraught, and asked Katara, Toph and the others to attend.
But the day of the funeral, only Katara showed up. Because Bumi was in the United forces, Kya couldn’t interrupt her spiritual travels, Tenzin had a heavily pregnant Pema at home, Lin was working, Suyin was just up in her business in Zaofu and Toph was nowhere to be found.
This made Zuko very sad, but Izumi? She was furious. Absolutely furious. Because, how could they miss the one time they needed to be there for her after all the times she had gone out of her way to support them?
And especially, Izumi felt betrayed by Kya, for not even passing by or answering back to the news. So Izumi kind of ghosted and stopped talking with everyone.
The first time she saw any of the Gaang kids was during Kuvira’s storyline. And even then, as cold as ice
So I kind of headcanon that Korra had some business to do in the fire nation and the gang kids tagged along, and kind of had a some of fight with Izumi about her ghosting them and them never visiting
Izumi would be the most angry and hurt with Kya, and they would kind of be angry with each other for the entirety of the storyline
But then by the end, they would have an actual talk and begin speaking to each other again
So yeah, happy ending but TONS of angst. I know right? Amazing❤️

Femslash February Day 6 = Kya & Izumi
You said, "Forever, " and I almost bought it
I miss fightin' in your old apartment
Breakin' dishes when you're disappointed
I still love you, I promise
Nothin' happened in the way I wanted
Every corner of this house is haunted
And I know you said that we're not talkin'
But I miss you, I'm sorry

Izumi: Did it hurt when you fell-
Kya: From heaven? Wow, I didn’t think you were such a flirt-
Izumi: No, I meant when you fell down the stairs.
Kya: ...
Izumi: You just laid there for 15 minutes.

Labelling her as “Lin’s wife” is probably a step up with how people treat Kyazumi and just make her “Kya’s ex” which surprisingly happens a lot. Poor lady isn’t winning. She’s already the last one added from the group, I feel somewhat bad for her from a writing perspective.
You’re doing an amazing job, believe me. You write her with such care and determination that I feel you put a lot of thought into her, her son and her daughter. Their dynamic feels geniune and cared for with understandable disagreements. I want to bring how she names them and Azula would’ve reacted, but I feel like that would be out of place.
Azula’s bond with Izumi and Lin is sweet. I jokingly feel like she would’ve adopted Lin with Ty Lee if Izumi hadn’t confessed her feelings.
Lin: Hey…Where’s Azula?
Ty Lee: Oh! She went back home to burn the adoption papers we had just in case for you if Toph crossed the line.
Lin: Wait what?!
Ty Lee: Now that you’re a part of the family, it feels unnecessary now. Welcome to the family, Lin!
Lin: *Blushing.*
Izumi: Aunt Azula truly cares for you.
Sorry if the last part seems unnecessary. I thought it’d be funny. You can ignore it if you like.
i do understand why she gets treated mostly as an unimportant character that's only there for the plot but isn't actively there, because that is kind of what she is. she only had a few seconds of screen time and no information about her, but that also means endless potential and possibilities
when it comes to Azula's reaction to Izumi naming the kids after her grandparents (unoriginal, i know), i never gave it much thought because it always made sense that Azula came to not care for her uncle and mother. i like to think she'd choose not to forgive them or rebuild a relationship with them, so when she found out, she was like, "oh. ok," because she understood they were important for Izumi and that it was a separate thing. at the end, they turned out to be so different from them that it didn't matter
AND YES THEY WOULD'VE DEFINITELY ADOPTED LIN

KYA
A: realistic
every single place she travelled to after she basically ran away she took one pebble or rock of some kind and just has this giant collection of rocks and pebbles in a series of jars and if she took them all out she could tell you exactly where she got each and every one despite there bing well over a hundred
B: hilarious
she used to prank bumi and tenzin by bending water into their shirts and/or pants without them noticing and then freezing it leaving them to screech because of the cold while looking insane trying to get it out (and she still does on occasion because it is very good entertainment— she tried it on lin once and she nearly bit her head off so that never happened again)
C: pain
she wasn’t home when aang died and wasn’t able to get there until like a week later and tenzin was completely shut off in his room the entire time from when aang died and bumis only coping mechanism was humour so neither of them were there for katara and when kya got home she felt extremely guilty about not getting there sooner to both say goodbye to her dad and be there for her mom more because when she did get there katara was in a very not good state and she ended up having to take care of her entire family without allowing herself time to mourn which she suffered with very much for the next like 50 years
D: fuck canon
kya lin and izumi are all married and have been for like 15 years and were straight up married for like 5 years before annnyone found out but toph knew that entire time through her vine stalking but just said nothing but they’re all very gay and in love and yeah

So, little obsessed with kyalinzumi and thought I’d share this little fic.
Kya is visiting Izumi at the Fire Nation Palace, Lin is in Republic city. Just a phone call between the ladies.
=====================================================
“Just call her to confirm. That way you can guilt trip her if she’s wavering.” Izumi responds as she waves off Kya’s incessant what if scenarios whilst making her way over to the large bookshelf in her study to find a reference to a bylaw.
“Foiiiinnneeee.” Kya responds as she drops her cheesy romance novel on the coffee table and pushes herself up off the lounge set, heading towards the phone sitting on Izumi’s desk. After dialling the number for Lin’s assistant, she perches herself on the edge of the desk waiting to be connected.
Upon verifying who the caller was, and checking the Chief’s schedule, Hui  places the caller on hold and heads over to the Chief’s office to knock on her door.
“Chief, I’ve got the Fire Nation Royal Palace on the line.” She informs her boss, who glances up from the report she was skimming through.
“Put them through.” She says as she scribbles a note on the notepad beside her.
                                ******
With a nod of her head in acknowledgement, Hui returns to her desk to update the caller, “Hello? Are you still on the line?”
“Yes, I’m still here.”
“Perfect. I’m just putting you through now. Please hold.” Hui responds to Kya.
“Patching through now, Chief.” Her assistant calls out and closes the office door once she hears the phone ring.
“Beifong.” Lin answers after she tucks the receiver between her head and her shoulder, so that she could flip the page of the report.
“What chu wearing?” Kya purrs down the receiver as she entwines her fingers with the phone’s line.
Without skipping a beat, the Metalbender replies in her no nonsense, gruff, Chief voice, “Limited edition Republic City Chief of Police uniform in black with gold trim,” as she continues skimming through the report, not paying much attention to the question or the caller as she was still engrossed in the findings.
Dumbstruck that Lin actually answered her without reprimand, the Waterbender was at a loss for words and failed to answer the woman, as the vivid image of said woman clad in her police uniform and commanding tone sent a shiver down her spine and a warmth spreading to her core.
“Hello? You there?” Lin speaks again into the receiver, after adjusting it so that she was holding the phone. “Hellooo?” she repeats as she places the report down, giving the caller her full attention now.
Still no response.
Completely forgetting what she called the Metalbender for and in her panicked state she slammed the receiver down on the hook and clasped her hands in front of her face, shying away from the phone.
“Shit.” She mutters to herself as she hears the line cut and the sound of the dial tone fills her ears, “stupid line must be playing up again,” returning the receiver onto the hook.
Meanwhile on the other end of the line…
“So? Did you get through to her?” Izumi queried as she made her way back to her desk while flipping through to the page she was after.
“Uh… yeah.” She responded while still dazed.
“Annnddd? What did she say?” the Firebender prodded.
“She said that she was wearing her uniform.” She replies in an aloof manner, as the Fire Lord shoots her a quizzical look.
                                  ******
Riiiinnnggg, riiiiinnnnnngggg!
The shrill sound of the telephone cut through the air and temporarily paused the conversation between the two women.
Placing the book down on her desk and eyeing the younger woman, Izumi pushed her glasses back up before answering the phone.
“Izumi speaking.” She answered in her formal voice.
“Hey, it’s me. I was just on a call with the palace and the line cut all of a sudden. Were you after me?”
Relaxing as she heard Lin’s voice over the receiver, she reverted to a casual tone, “It was actually Kya.”
“Oh? Is Kya with you?”
“Yes, she was the one who called.”
“Oh, right. Sorry, wasn’t paying attention to the voice on the other end of the line.” The younger woman apologises, “Should’ve known that it was her, as you don’t exactly ask what I’m wearing when you call.” She chuckles at the thought.
“Is that something that you would like me to partake in?” the Firebender responded with a smile teasing at her lips and her eyes alight with amusement as she turns to regard Kya.
Clearing her throat from the sudden turn of conversation, the Metalbender responds, “Um, I’m not - that’s not the point of this phone call!” She splutters and abruptly cuts herself off, feeling a little flustered. “Did she actually have a message for me or was this a call for pleasure? I’m a bit flat chat today and she knows that we don’t do this while I’m at work.” She said cutting to the chase.
“She did have a reason for the call, though I am intrigued as to what you said to her. You’ve left her in a bit of a stupor.”
“She asked me what I was wearing, so I told her that I was wearing a limited edition Republic City Chief of Police uniform in black with gold trim.”
“Mhm, and did you say it in your Chief voice?”
“Uh, yes?” Lin responds a little perplexed as to why the conversation was still being steered to what she was wearing.
“No wonder.” She responds with a gentle laugh, “I’ll have to sort her out as you aren’t here.”
“Zumi?”
“Yes?”
“The original point of the call?” Lin offers in a slightly exasperated voice as she tries to take control of the conversation once again.
“Ah, yes. Kya was wondering if you will be attending the Mid-Autumn festival gala this year at city hall? I have managed to adjust my schedule and will be making my way to Republic City to make an appearance at the gala, and will also use this time to check in on the Fire Nation embassy while I’m there. Kya of course, will be joining me.” She answers in a semi-bored tone. “Irrespective of your attendance, please note that we will be staying at your residence for the duration of our visit.”
Leaning back into her chair, Lin processes the information before replying with an air of playfulness, “Is that right? And how long will your visit be?”
“A total of five nights.”
“Hm.” She hummed in response, “And what happens if I decide not to be present at either locations during your visit?”
Slightly taken aback by the Metalbender’s response, the older woman seats herself in her chair before dropping her tone of voice to a low and sultry one, usually reserved for their private quarters, “Well then you will have been a very, very bad girl, and will be punished for your actions.”
Biting back a smile and trying to stave off the slight giddiness from the possibility of some long overdue playtime, she quickly responded, “I’ll think about it” before hanging up on the Fire Lord.
With a scoff, the older woman leaned forward to drop the phone back onto the receiver, before pushing back into her chair, shaking her head in amusement at the bratty-ness of the younger woman.
“Well?” Kya asked in anticipation, having snapped out of her daze.
“She said that she’ll think about it.” Izumi said as she vacated her chair and walked towards Kya, grabbing her by the middle of her dress and pulling her in for short but searing kiss. Having brought back the warmth in her core, Izumi abruptly broke off the kiss and pushed the woman back to her original position and letting go of her dress. Using the same hand that just released the Waterbender, she lightly trailed a finger from the mocha skinned woman’s chest up her neck and to her chin and then tapping the side of her jaw twice with two fingers, eliciting a groan from the needy woman.
“Come, we need to take care of your situation.” She said in the same low sultry voice that she had only just used with Lin, before swiftly turning to exit her private study and to head to their bedroom.

angstpril day five: amnesia
CW: .......sad
fic under the cut
Lin opened her eyes groggily, wincing against the bright white surrounding her. She pushed herself away from the bed she rested on but fell right back down when her headache multiplied. She was vaguely aware of people around her, helping her to sit up properly, bringing her water. She didn’t recognize any of them. Once her head had stopped spinning and she’d had a drink of water, she noticed a woman beside her, holding her hand.
“Who are you?” She asked quietly, confusion coming over her.
The woman’s piercing blue eyes widened and she bit her lip, seemingly trying to hold back tears. She took a deep breath before saying anything back.
“How much do you remember? Can you tell me who you are? What year you were born?” She said, her hand tightening around Lin’s.
Lin stared at her lap for a moment, trying to remember something, anything. No matter how hard she tried, she came up blank. She looked back up at the woman and shook her head slowly.
“I don’t- there’s nothing,” She whispered, her own eyes watering now.
The woman forced a sad smile and let out a shaky breath.
“I thought that might be the case,” She said softly.
“It’s alright, we’ll help you through this. I’ll start by telling you small things, alright?” Lin nodded at the question.
“Well, your name is Lin Beifong. You were injured in a work accident, protecting civilians,” The woman smiled to herself and chuckled.
“Always playing the hero, you,” She was about to continue when Lin interrupted her.
“What was the accident?” She asked, burrowing her brows.
“Oh, Lin, you really don’t remember anything, do you?” The woman asked, to which Lin shook her head again.
“Well,” The woman continued.
“You were the Chief of Police here in Republic City. You were working in the field when there was an explosion downtown, and a building started to collapse. You’re an earthbender, you see, so you used your bending to hold the building up until everyone was evacuated. You saved a lot of people, Lin, but when it was time for you to get out of there…” She trailed off, sucking in a breath and forcing another smile.
“Your focus slipped just barely, and a piece of rubble came down on your head. It was quite the injury,” She chuckled darkly, shaking her head.
“We did everything we could to heal you. Even my mother came down and tried, but your memory… I’m afraid that’s one thing we can’t restore,” A tear fell from her eye and she laughed at herself, quickly wiping it away.
“I’m sorry,” Lin said quietly, looking back at her lap.
“What? Lin, you have nothing to apologize for,” The woman put her other hand on Lin’s cheek, forcing Lin to meet her eyes.
“I never answered your question from before,” She let out a sigh.
“Lin, my name is Kya. I’m your wife.”
Lin stumbled as they stepped onto the airship. Her balance had also been damaged in the accident, but she managed with Kya’s help. Kya gripped her arm tightly now, keeping her upright with unexpected strength. Lin turned her head slightly to give Kya a grateful smile, adjusting so she could stand up straight again.
They’d kept Lin in the hospital for a few weeks, gradually telling her more and more about her old life and monitoring her health just in case. Finally, they’d discharged her, saying she was ready to join the real world again. If she was honest, she didn’t feel ready herself, but she was glad to be going somewhere more comfortable than the hospital.
Kya had told her that they were going to the Fire Nation. She said they had family there, though she hadn’t said who exactly. At this point, Lin didn’t mind. There was already so much new information hitting her every day that it didnt matter who she met at the end of this trip. Everyone was a stranger to her now, even her own wife. She felt bad for Kya, like she deserved so much more than a wife that now couldn’t even remember her name.
“I’m sorry,” She muttered for the hundredth time that day.
Kya looked at her softly and sighed, shaking her head.
“Lin, you never need to apologize. I tell you this every time you do, and I will continue to say it; I love you, Lin, and I’m not going to stop loving you because of this. I want to help you through this, alright? There is nothing, nothing you need to be sorry for,” Kya laced her fingers through Lin’s as she spoke.
Lin looked away, ashamed despite Kya’s reassurance. She couldn’t help but think over Kya’s words, doubt growing in her mind with every repetition. How could Kya love her when she couldn’t even love herself? When she didn’t even know herself? It didn’t make sense. None of it made sense, but by now there was nothing to be done.
The airship didn’t take too long to get to their destination. A few hours in the air wasn’t all that bad when they had so much to talk about. Kya told her more about how things had been before the accident, today telling her about the time they’d accidentally adopted eight turtleducks. The story made Lin smile, but something inside of her ached. It often hurt her to listen to Kya’s stories of before, because they were just that: stories. She listened contently, though, as it seemed to make Kya happy to tell them, and if she couldn’t remember anything, at least she could imagine what it might’ve been like.
She snapped back to reality when the ship jerked slightly and Kya stood.
“We’re here!” Kya said, wide grin on her face.
Lin smiled quietly and stood up with her, grabbing the small bag of things Kya had collected from her apartment for her. Kya took her other hand, picking up her own bag, and they walked to the exit ramp. It was a sunny day outside, hardly a cloud in the sky, and there was green overflowing at the edges of the landing pad. There was a collection of people in red and orange robes standing near the end of the ramp, seemingly waiting for them.
“Is that the family you were talking about?” Lin asked somewhat nervously.
Kya nodded, pulling her hand from Lin’s to wave at the group. A tall woman with grey hair almost as dark as Lin’s waved back before clasping her hands anxiously in front of her. With her stood three young men and a young woman. The woman bore a strong resemblance to her elder, long dark hair and sharp features almost a perfect duplicate. The first of the men, seemingly the eldest, also looked like the two women, though not quite as much. He had the same dark hair and angular jaw, but his face and shoulders were broader than the women’s.
The second and third young men shared the others’ dark hair, but almost nothing else. They were also the only ones not in long, expensive-looking robes, instead both wearing plain but well-made suits. The taller of the two looked more like the first three, his skin a matching tone and build holding the same thin and sharp qualities, but he didn’t look related to them. The shorter was much broader, his skin just barely darker than the others’. There was something about him that seemed softer about him, and his demeanour was far from any of the others. He bounced on the spot as Kya and Lin approached, his excitement and nerves much more apparent than those standing with him.
As they got closer, Lin felt herself getting more and more panicked. She couldn’t even begin to guess at who they might be, and it didn’t help that none of them looked anything like Kya or herself. She glanced at Kya, who was beaming at the people up ahead. If Kya were this excited to see them, surely she should be too, right? And Kya would introduce them to her, and they’d tell stories, and she’d learn to love them again. Just like she had with Kya.
“Kya, Lin,” The older woman said with a smile on her face, snapping Lin out of her head.
Kya rushed up and gave her a huge hug, nearly toppling the both of them over. Lin stood slightly back, raising her hand in greeting when the woman turned to her. She noticed tears welling up in her eyes and looked at the ground, another wave of guilt crashing over her.
“Oh, Lin…” The woman said, opening her arms. “May I?”
Lin looked back up at her, realizing she was asking to give her a hug. She nodded and took a step forward, immediately feeling the woman’s arms wrapping around her shoulders. Lin buried her face in her shoulder, taking in her scent and trying again to remember. Her eyes watered when she still came up blank and she pulled away. No matter how many times she had to do this, it never got any easier.
The woman watched Lin for a moment before turning to Kya.
“Let’s go home, shall we?” She asked, gesturing towards a satolimousine nearby.
Kya nodded and they all filed towards the sato, Lin taking a seat next to Kya once everyone else was loaded in. The drive was not a long one, but when they arrived at their destination, Lin had to stifle a gasp.
“You- you live in a palace?” She asked, mouth hanging open as they exited the sato and started walking up the long path.
“Did Mama not tell you anything?” The younger of the two women said, laughing.
“Mama?” Lin looked at Kya, a questioning look on her face.
Everyone fell silent for a moment, stopping when Lin stood back.
“Kya?” She asked, searching Kya’s face for answers.
Kya glanced nervously between her and the older woman before grabbing Lin’s hand and pulling her forward.
“I’ll tell you everything when we get inside, alright?” She murmured.
Lin huffed but nodded and the group continued towards the palace.
Not a word was uttered for the rest of the walk. In fact, nobody spoke until they were seated around a large table in an even larger room. The older woman sat at the head of the table, the other girl to her right. The eldest of the men sat to her left, followed by the energetic one and then the tallest. Lin sat across from the tall boy, Kya between her and the younger woman. Silver plates with steaming food were brought to the table by servers, one placed in front of each diner. Still, nobody spoke.
“Can someone please tell me what’s going on?” Lin asked loudly, fed up with trying to guess for herself.
She glared at Kya next to her, who met her gaze with guilt and a mouth stuffed with rice. The energetic boy across the table let out a laugh before slapping his hand over his mouth.
“Sorry, it’s not- I’m not-,” He lowered his hand and looked down, busying himself with his food again.
This time it was Kya’s turn to let out a quiet laugh.
“It’s alright Bolin, don’t worry,” She said, smiling kindly at him.
Bolin.
Lin repeated the name in her head, trying to memorize it and match it to his face.
Bolin, Bolin, Bolin.
She felt a hand cover hers on the table and turned back to Kya. Kya drew a deep breath and squeezed Lin’s hand, flitting her gaze down the table before starting.
“At the end of the table is Izumi. She…” Kya paused and Izumi gave her a reassuring nod, prompting her to continue.
“She’s our wife. Next to her is Iroh, and this is Ursa,” Kya gestured to the girl to her right.
“Bolin is next to Iroh, and that’s Mako,” She nodded to the boy across from Lin, who gave a small awkward smile.
Lin sat quietly for a moment, going through names and matching them to faces in her mind. When she was sure she’d remember them, at least for now, she asked more questions.
“So Izumi is our… wife… so who is everyone else in relation?” She said hesitantly.
“Well, Iroh and Ursa are Izumi’s biological kids. Bolin and Mako…” Kya trailed off, looking to Mako for guidance.
He looked at her for a time before pushing away from the table.
“Could I… could I talk to you for a minute? Just us?” He asked Lin, holding his breath waiting for her response.
She looked at Kya who smiled and nodded before sliding her hair out from the table. Mako let out a relieved sigh and turned to leave the room, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Lin was following him.
When they were in the hallway, the door to the dining room closed behind them, Mako pulled Lin into a tight hug. She returned the hug, rubbing his back when she felt his shoulders shaking with sobs. They remained like that for a long time, until finally Mako pulled away. He looked at Lin with such sadness, though she thought she noticed a glimmer of hope in his amber eyes. She couldn’t help but want to comfort him, but her curiosity took precedence.
“Who… who am I to you?” She asked, watching his face closely.
He stared for a second before turning his head to the side. He let out a shaky breath and closed his eyes, steadying himself before speaking. Even so, it took another minute before he could say the word. When he did, Lin’s heart broke a thousand times over, the fear and hope in his voice a knife in her stomach. It was only one word, but it felt like so much more.
“Mom?”
