tbh one of my favorite headcanons about Azula is that post redemption and healing she still has spies but for no apparent reason. shes aware that she doesn't need them and she doesn't use them for any mischief (usually)

sometimes she'll sent them to keep an eye on someone or something of the sort but nothing else really

In book 3 the awakening, Zuko confronts Azula in her bedroom after speaking with his father. Such a serious scene yet I noticed that these two really are siblings when Zuko left the damn door open when leaving.

ok so. to understand all of this we must start by saying that in this Linzumi AU Iroh is 36 and Ursa is 32, while Izumi is 58

Izumi had Iroh when she was 22 and his father wasn't the best person out there; he would be very harsh on him in different ways in order to make him "as strong as he can be". one of the worst things he did was not allow Izumi to attend to him when he cried, sometimes even physically stopping her.

they clearly had different ways in which they wanted to raise their son. Izumi wanted him to have the most normal life he possibly could, while his father wanted him to "live as the prince he was"

after Ursa was born, Izumi had the opening to leave him once her family finally realized how AWFUL this man was, but he wouldn't allow her to leave since she was giving him all the status and power that he had (through the royal family), so he burnt her shoulder and basically kidnapped Iroh. in essence he said "ok but i take your child as punishment"

so now she's become terrified of anything happening to him, especially when theyre things "she could've avoided," LIKE HIM JOINING THE UNITED FORCES

there's guilt for not being able to protect the child that she was meant to protect from the beginning; for "allowing" such a man to be his father, she blames herself for what was done to him. now she finds herself being more protective of him. with Ursa, there are other things going on

so she is, in fact, trying her best

you know what? i think something that a lot of people AND the korra people overlook when talking about the lin-su conflict is that they, in essence, dont know each other.

last time they saw each other before Book 3 was when they were 16–17 and 22–23. they spent only 16–17 years together and then 30 apart, so no shit, it doesn't get resolved immediately; the versions they knew of each other dont exist anymore. they're gone. knowing someone goes beyond from knowing their partner and their kids.

also that, i hc that lin kept tabs on su bc she worried about her, but in the show she didn't; she didn't know about her kids or husband, barely about the city. imagine how fucked up it must be to see your sister, who used to be a criminal, turned into a matriarch with her own city and all. i wouldn't believe it either

leaving aside how shitty su is in canon, this really makes you wonder how people in the show didn't know the magnitude of the situation. korra for example, is like, "oh, you're so awful; you dont forgive your sister after 30 years; it's been so long." BUT THATS THE POINT, THAT ITS BEEN SO LONG

basically, these two, mainly lin but, these two had to take each other's perspective of the other and destroy it, because that person doesn't exist anymore. its been 30 years
