Do you ever think about the evolution of the Beifong family?

When we first meet them, they are introduced as a rich family, universally known for their wealth and nothing else.

And then, in LoK, we see a family of skilled benders, architects, artists, founders and defenders of a technologically advanced city, all of whom are freaking awesome.

And of course this change wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Toph.

People talk about people ignoring Suyin's trauma (which happens) but in that way of thinking they have boiled down Lin's trauma to purely their mother. Suyin is a part of her trauma, she's a part of the pain in Lin's life on multiple levels (in my opinion most of lin's trauma isn't her mother it's what her mother and others in her life have constantly done, leave). Yes they both had hardship in their childhood due to lack of attention, but a big part of Lin's trauma stems from her personal dynamics with her family (and her 'community'). With Tenzin and her relationship ending, with her mother up and leaving her and never returning, and her harsh relationship with her sister she can't push herself to forgive because of the scar on her face. Lin's trauma stems a lot from her lack of ability to forgive, and while she doesn't have to; when most of the people she cares for have left her or hurt her she can't push herself to let them back in her life, it isolates her. Yes suyin has trauma, yes they both have issues that stem from Toph, but suyin has a community, a family around her (which have their own cracks in their gilded armor). Lin doesn't have that which is a part of many problems she faces. Suyin has different trauma and deals with it differently, but you can't compare it to Lin's because they're different.

Tldr; yes suyin has trauma, but to group it in with Lin's which is more that the trauma she faced growing up in Toph's home is incorrect.

2nd tldr; suyin and Lin don't have the same trauma.

One thing I hate about the tlok fandom is that they will acknowledge one character's trauma and then ignore this character's sibling who grew up with them in the same circumstances.

Mako is heavily traumatised, of course. But Bolin is the haha funny himbo because somehow Mako at 8 years of age was able to perfectly shelter his younger brother from the horrors of homelessness?

Worse offender, Lin Beifong. Tragic character. Household void of love, neglectful mother. Very sad, yes.

BUT SUYIN WAS THERE TOO, MOTHERFUCKERS.

Suyin was there, wanting her mothers love just as much as Lin. But just because Suyin isn't caught in a perpetual midlife crisis, like Lin, somehow the trauma just. Didn't affect her?

I've made this point before, but Suyin and Bolin don't fit the archetype of "traumatised". Being friendly, bubbly and energetic aren't traits people usually associate with traumatised characters. While, broody, passive agressive loners like Mako and Lin do.

Many people don't just show they're hurt. Many people, like Bolin and Su, build coping mechanisms or masks or just. Deal with trauma differently. Yet people just decide to ignore the obvious fact that Bolin and Su are also trauma survivors, just like their older siblings.

It's weird? Especially in the Suyin case. People love to hate on her and tout Lin as this poor, misunderstood victim, when Suyin is a victim of their circumstances too.

Ways Legend Of Korra could've paid tribute to Suki instead of acting like she never existed

Suki is the cop, not Toph. Suki would have formed the Republic City Police, in this case. The Republic City Kyoshi Guard. Suki enforcing the rules and law makes way more sense than Toph. Lin would be Sokka and Suki’s daughter and would have a brother named Hakoda in honor of Sokka’s father and both would be in charge of the police after Suki’s retirement. Lin always wears the Kyoshi Warrior make up to honor her mother and Hakoda inherits his father’s boomerang and cunning mind. Toph “fuck the rules” Beifong would never in a million lifetimes EVER be a cop. I find it hard to believe Toph, the rebel who hates rules would become the very institution she despised, if anything Toph would be the Founder of Pro-Bending or a nomad Earthbending/Metalbending master and a hermit. Suyin would be her daughter and The Duke or Teo would be the father.

Suki leads a new generation of Kyoshi Warriors that helps train Korra non-bending techniques to counter the Equalists Chi-Blocking techniques.

Just giving Suki a statue in Republic City. Literally anywhere.

One little mention to her existence. Bumi mentioning he was trained by uncle Sokka and aunt Suki would've been enough.

In The Red Lotus Society's attempt to steal Korra, Sokka and Suki died protecting the Avatar

I came up with 5 near perfect scenarios that could've paid tribute to Suki. All Bryke did was act like she never existed or didn't matter. Fuck you, Suki deserved better.
