Vedic Astrology 101.

What is Vedic astrology?

vedic astrology is an old Indian science practiced for more than 5000 years ago with the objective of studying one's personal harvest gain, wedding, and overall daily activities. It was not originally intended to judge one's character or predict his life.

the proper name of Vedic astrology is: "Jyotisha or Jyotishya (from Sanskrit jyotiṣa, from jyót “light, heavenly body"), It is one of the six auxiliary disciplines in Hinduism that is connected with the study of the Vedas." ( vedas are a large body of religious texts originating in ancient India )

this means that vedic astrology is deeply intertwined with Hindu philosophy and spirituality but that doesn't mean one must be a converted Hindu to be able to study and enjoy the art of vedic astrology.

Difference between vedic and Western/tropical astrology :

for now, i will not go deep into the main differences between both systems i will only highlight the difference in system (zodiac) utilization and the overall most important details.

Vedic astrologers, use the Sidereal Zodiac, that are calculated planetary positions based on the fixed locations of the stars in the sky. However, due to the precession of the equinoxes, Indian astrologers adjusted their calculations to keep in sync with the stellar positions. Thus, their system is known as sidereal, or star-based.

Western / Tropical astrology, on the other hand, uses the tropical (fixed) zodiac. This system relies on four seasons that represent the Sun’s movement, equinoxes, solstices, as well as the tilt of Earth on its axis. 

vedic will utilize the "whole house system" instead of "Placidus" system meaning that each sign will occupy one whole house instead of only a cusp of a certain house

vedic will also not count the outer planets also known as "pluto ,uranus and Neptune" because those planets are used by the westerns to replace a shadow "imaginary point" called rahu and ketu (lunar nodes) that bring the same "effects" ... although a few astrologers will continue to use the outer planets for transit purposes despite them not being part officially of the vedic astrology approach because those planets are way distant of the earth and don't provide enough evidence of their effect upon affecting someone's life yet for those who choose to include on their overall analyses will use the outer planets as one of significator of generational impactful changes and behaviors ( this will be expanded on a post focusing on the outer planets)

also along with the outer planets, the sideral zodiac doesn't use the asteroids as well!.

and the Vedic considers the moon as the most important planet because the moon is the one responsible for the mind's emotions behavior mood instincts emotional overall state, and feelings. the moon represents our inner self and the sun our outer self.

For anybody asking, I use Lahiri ayanamsa because it seems mostly accurate for me and most of vedic astrologers

Why are they important?

🪐Each Ayanamsa can change a degree and minute of setting, so when there are two planets on border of a sign to the next one, each ayanamsa can change that.

Planets (Grah)

🪐Vedic astrology discludes Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, asteroids, fixed stars etc.

🪐Sun - Saturn and Nodes of the Moon are used (Rahu - NN, Ketu - SN)

🪐There are malefic and beneficial planets

Malefic - Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu

Beneficial - Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Moon

I'm not sure if a dnd campaign qualifies as the type of writing you're interesting in helping with, but I feel I should disclose that that's what this is for. I'm wanting to include more diversity in my settings; would it be inappropriate to have a seer/fortune teller with a South Asian appearance? I'm not sure if this would end up being a "magical South Asian" stereotype as you've described before.

Hello! Speaking from the perspective of an Indian Hindu, here are my queries:

Does this campaign include other characters of colour, South Asians in particular? If yes, then that balances out the possibility of the Exotic Brown Woman trope.

Do the characters of other ethnicities also practise magic or exhibit fantastic/otherworldly abilities (I would assume so, seeing as it’s DnD)? Doesn’t necessarily have to be the gift of prophecy but if the story is peopled with magical creatures then the fortune teller wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb.

Is she sexualised or made into the “temptress” in comparison with other characters? Is she likened to an animal frequently to describe her attractiveness or described in dehumanising terms to denote sex appeal (snake and wildcat imagery come to mind for South Asians.) If not, then the dangers of playing into such a trope are immediately reduced because what makes it harmful in the first place is not magic but the objectification of brown women.

Fortune telling is not permitted in several religions, so make sure you do your research before designing the character. While Jyotishya or Vedic astrology features prominently in the lives of practising Hindus (it is actually considered an essential tenement to Hindu rituals), fortune telling/astrology is forbidden in Islam and other religions. Also remember, that as with most other other things, Vedic astrology is interwoven with ideas of caste and the caste system. Ask yourself if you feel comfortable to undertake in-depth research about these topics while you are designing the character.

Is her magic depicted as a sort of primitive backwardness contrasted against progressive characters? (once again, not likely, but still an essential check) Is she a Guru Pathik from ATLA-esque prototype: the eccentric seer providing comic relief? That is the only case where her using magic can pose a problem. Refer to Parvati excelling at Divination in Harry Potter, a subject dismissed by most of the main characters as frivolous. Be respectful when portraying an ethnicity and a belief system that’s not yours. 

Aside this, I don’t see an inherent problem with the usage of fortune telling by a South Asian; It’s a pretty booming business here in India, and my own feelings about it notwithstanding, divination and cosmology definitely forms a part of South Asian Hindu society.

🤹🏻‍♀️Each house in Vedic astrology, has a special meaning when looking for an interpretation of some aspect in your life, so I'll just type some key-words for each house.

1st house (Lagna) - self, idenity, mask

2nd house - money, outcomes

3rd house - communication, short-trips, relatives, education

4th house - family life, childhood

5th house - children, hobbies, fun, love

6th house - the way you work, health, pets, routine, co-workers

7th house - others (romantic & non romantic)

8th house - transformations, secrets, hidden, death, sex

9th house - travel, foreign, education, spirituality

10th house - career, professional life

11th house - friends, manifestations, benefits

12th house - subconcious, enemies, foreign

🤹🏻‍♀️if there are any malefic planets in one of the houses, it can create negative influence and can be reversed through remedies set by a professional vedic astrologer

ex: mars in 6th house (cancer) could mean major health problems with breasts, could be cancer or anything connected to breasts since cancer sign rules them

🤹🏻‍♀️beneficial planets in houses bring auspicious results which aren't negative:

ex: jupiter in 4th house alone or with neutral/positive planets can bring luck in family, feeling accepted and safe.
