Summary: New intel from Curie brings new rules about the quarantine process. This puts Zolf and Wilde in an awkward position. A/N - The forced outing depicted in this chapter isn’t through any malicious intent, but rather circumstances outside character control. There are no transphobic sentiments portrayed in this series, internalised or direct, but some of Wilde’s caution around disclosing indicates that this is a world where transphobia exists. These things could make for an uncomfortable experience for some readers.

The few times that Zolf went out on missions alone, usually on fruitless attempts to scout the Shoin Institute, it had been Barnes that welcomed him back and locked him in. Zolf didn’t mind isolation stretches, but he didn’t love that Wilde kept himself absent for the entire duration. He understood why, but there was something unsettling about coming home, and yet having to wait for what he felt like was the proper homecoming of being reunited with Wilde. But he coped with it just fine.

When the invitation from Curie came for a meeting, and specified that only one person was welcome, Zolf fought hard for it to be him.

“You’ve never even met Curie.” Wilde pointed out, voice level despite the heat in Zolf’s tone. “It makes far more sense for me to go, and someone needs to stay here.”

“At least take Barnes with you,” Zolf countered, knowing he was being ridiculous but unable to help it. He’d known that this time was coming but that didn’t make it come any easier. “He don’t have to come with you to meet her, but he can keep you safe.”

Wilde’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t need a bodyguard.”

Zolf crossed his arms, stymied. It wasn’t that he was overprotective. But he couldn’t squash the memory of Wilde’s face, slippery with blood beneath frantic fingers, or the haunted look in Wilde’s eyes when he emerged from isolation.

“I won’t even be gone long, Zolf. Curie is going to meet me in Hiroshima.”

Zolf opened his mouth to argue further, and was stopped by Wilde closing his eyes, looking genuinely tired for a moment. Normally Wilde relished a bit of verbal sparring and the two of them fought as easily as they breathed. But something about the way he sighed gave Zolf pause.

When Wilde next spoke, his voice was soft, a rare pleading in his tone. “I know, Zolf. I know you don’t like it. I don’t like it, but I have been looking at these same four walls for months. I am sick of not being a productive member of this team.”

“WHAT!” Zolf exploded. “You are the most productive member! Me n’ Barnes n’ Carter would be nothin’ without-”

“You know what I mean!” Wilde said, frustrated. Zolf hardly ever saw him like this. Anger was an emotion that Wilde kept locked away, just like his fear. “I’m sick of people treating me like I’m some sort of china doll, just because I can’t cast anymore!”

Zolf spluttered. “You’re not- we don’- nobody said-”

Wilde raised his hand. “I appreciate your concern, Zolf, I really do. But I’m going on this mission. And I am asking you-” Wilde drew a deep breath in through his nose “-to trust me.”

Well. That had been played like a trump card. Zolf felt something in him release, the angry churn of his stomach dissipating. If there was any truth left in the world at this point, it was that Zolf trusted Wilde.

He nodded.

As was protocol, on the evening he returned, Zolf, Barnes and Carter made themselves scarce until Wilde was safely in the anti-magic chamber, not detouring to any other rooms of the inn. They had arrangements for how to handle if a returning party member didn’t head straight for what they’d all started calling “the box,” but thankfully it was yet to come up. Zolf headed in after, with the keys to the cell, fresh clothes, and a bowl of prawn gyoza in hand.

“How’s Hiroshima?” Zolf asked, locking up and passing through the food.

Wilde didn’t respond, just levelled Zolf with a flat glare.

Zolf shrugged. “You can talk to me, an’ if at the end of the week you’re compromised, I’ll just assume that anythin’ you said was false intel, yeah? Until then,” Zolf pulled up the chair that sat outside and cell and settled it. “There’s no harm in it going this way,” he swept his hand from Wilde’s direction toward himself. “I just won’t tell you anything you don’t already know.” He, quite simply, was not going to take no for an answer. He wasn’t leaving Wilde alone with his thoughts for a week.

Wilde managed to look disapproving for a moment more, then a little smirk slipped through the veneer. “I find it difficult to believe you know anything I don’t, Smith.”

“Oh, sod off.”

“I can’t help it if I just happen to be the brains of the operation.” Wilde gave a small, defeated chuckle, and sat on the cot. He started undoing the anti-magic cuffs and massaging his ankles. Sometimes when there was no one using the box, Wilde would come sleep down here just for a chance to take them off for a little while.

“Hiroshima is well enough, but Curie says Cairo is a mess. The sandstorms have been giving it absolute hell. Anyone who doesn’t still need to be there isn’t, though it’s still seeing a lot of refugee traffic.” He picked up the food Zolf had passed through.

“From Europe?”

Wilde nodded between popping gyoza into his mouth. “These are very good, you know.”

Zolf waved a hand. “Hiromi’s been giving me lessons. She’s much nicer about it than her husband.”

Wilde updated Zolf on Curie’s operation. When he mentioned that she had been gifted the old Tahan estate, Zolf’s gut squeezed. It had been… almost over a year since he’d seen Hamid, and months since they’d last heard from him and the others. It was almost impossible to think that they were still alive, but without bodies or news, there was no way forward. Both men were left lingering in ambivalence, hope laid thick and heavy over a grief that couldn’t surface.

Wilde finished his food and frowned. He spoke more hesitantly than before. “There is one more thing I should tell you. We need to update some of the protocols.”

“Yeh? Howso?”

“The blue vein rumours? About the infected? Confirmed. More importantly, Curie says in every instance of a double agent, the blue veins have appeared on the body first, not the face or hands.” Wilde was overexplaining in a way that was unlike him. “In addition to the quarantine, being on the lookout for behavioural changes, Curie also recommended we do,” Wilde hesitated, again in a most un-Wilde-like fashion, “…visual inspections of those in quarantine. Thorough ones.” He fluttered nervous hands up and down his torso to illustrate.

As Zolf slowly turned over the implications, Wilde turned to rummage through his bag and withdraw papers. He gestured for Zolf to come take them through the slot.

“Reports, signed and sealed, detailing it all.”

Zolf took them, still absorbing what Wilde had said. He didn’t look through the bars. If he had, he would have seen something cautious and watchful in Wilde’s eyes.

The silence stretched on too long between them.

“Anyway, if you don’t mind, I am going to get some sleep. The boat from here to the mainland isn’t exactly a luxury cruiser, and I am exhausted.” Wilde flumped down onto the cot to punctuate the point.

“I… yeh. I’ll go have a look through these reports.” As Zolf walked away from the box, he paused in the door. “I’m glad you’re back,” he said. I’m glad you’re safe, he didn’t add.

“Of course you are,” Wilde replied without missing a beat. “This place must be dreadfully dull without me to liven it up for you.”

Zolf rolled his eyes and headed upstairs.

Having read through Curie’s reports, the next day Zolf went back to Wilde’s cell with his heart in his mouth.

Naked inspections. It’s just one thing after another in this brave new fucking world, isn’t it, he thought, agitated.

The whole situation was ridiculous. What was he so worried about? After everything they’d been through there was a certain trust, an ease between them now. What was a bit of nudity in the face of all that?

He was only feeling nervy about it because he was sure that Wilde was going to be a dick about it, in his usual style. Getting under Zolf’s skin hadn’t stopped being a hobby of Wilde’s, and this whole situation set the stage for his insufferable needling.

Wilde stood quickly as Zolf entered. He’d changed out of the clothes he’d travelled to Hiroshima in, and was now wearing long dark pants and his favourite yukata, the one with green and pink floral pattern.

“I read through all the reports,” Zolf began.

“We might as well get this over with,” Wilde said at the same time, and then laughed a little manically.

Zolf took his seat, waited for Wilde to quiet, then continued. “Curie also recommended we start askin’ people to tell us stories of things that only the other would know. Code words aren’t enough because it’s more about how you do the retellin’ than it is about the information.” Wilde’s face relaxed at the notion of delaying what came next.

“I’ll get you to tell me about… tell me how you remember our first meetin’, then.” Zolf said. Since all the other people who were there are either dead or presumed dead, he didn’t want to add.

Wilde launched into an explanation of flaming notepads, blood noses, slipping into his storyteller shoes with relief. It was nice to listen to him perform, even if thinking about Hamid and Sasha was depressing.

“And,” Wilde wound up, “I just happened to linger by the door and overhear you mention something about my bum, of all things. Now, if you’ll do me the favour of telling what that was, and we can all move forward assured of each other’s memory, though probably not their integrity.”

Oh, curses. He hadn’t thought Wilde had still been around for those comments. He crossed his arms and frowned loudly.

“Come now Zolf, you’ve already said it, you can’t take it back now.” Exactly as Zolf had suspected, Wilde seemed to be delighting in causing Zolf discomfort once again, whilst he slipped back into his old, familiar smarm. Wilde wrapped his hands around the bars of the cell and bounced slightly on his toes.

“I said,” Zolf pinched the bridge of his nose. “I said it was very nice.” And he stood by it, but Wilde didn’t need to know that.

Wilde laughed, free and throaty, running his hand through his hair in a way that Zolf knew, if he had access to his magic, would be accompanied by a bawdy shimmer of sparkles. For a moment, things felt bright.

The energy snapped back. Wilde wasn’t performing for a party, he wasn’t needling Zolf for a laugh, he was locked up in a cell waiting to find out if he had an infection that would turn him into something unrecognizable and dangerous… Wilde dropped his hands from the adamantine, and the two of them fell silent.

“I can go get Barnes, if you’d prefer,” Zolf said with a useless gesture. Wilde was already shaking his head.

“What’s a bit of nudity between… friends.” Wilde asked, with a quizzical tilt of his head. His eyes were asking does friends really cover it anymore? Zolf didn’t have an answer.

Zolf didn’t know how to get this whole awkward scenario started, so he just waited, his mouth dry. There was something so grim in Wilde’s face, and Zolf didn’t understand. His obvious discomfort with the notion of watching Wilde undress should’ve delighted the man. It should have been ammunition.

As Wilde started on the ties of his yukata, for the briefest of moments, Zolf’s discomfort was replaced by a blistering anger at the absurdity of it all. All those moments he had wanted to be closer to Wilde, to touch his bare skin or to hold him… but he hadn’t asked for this. Between the two of them hung a nascent possibility. A possibility that Zolf was only just starting to acknowledge, and that deserved a chance to blossom.

That instead it should be forced to happen like this, through cell bars, was perversely unfair. To him. To Wilde. To the pair of them and all the ways that this could have been different.

Wilde paused, as if seeing the flash of anger in Zolf’s eyes. He spoke quietly, almost to himself. “Thinking about… hmph. The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” With that non sequitur, he disrobed, turning his body to drape the cloth over the cot.

As he turned back, Zolf was struck by a sudden realisation; he’d never seen Wilde with his shirt off. Never swum together, never seen him coming back from bathing with a towel around his waist. Even in the heat, Wilde always wore his shirt buttoned, his yukata firmly tied. Zolf swore he could see Wilde’s chest in his mind’s eye. It just made sense. Wilde had certainly seen Zolf’s chest; they’d been living in each other’s pockets for almost a year now and Zolf didn’t think much of it.

But no, because if he’d seen Wilde without the shirt, he would know that Wilde had a smattering of dark chest hair. And more scars on his torso than seemed right. The wounds from Douglas had torn two messy gashes near the ribs, and those scars were present as expected. But there were two more - slightly crescent shaped, uniform and well-healed - swooping across his chest just beneath flat nipples.

Surgical scars.

The air was knocked out of Zolf’s lungs. His body had grasped answers before his mind did. His thoughts felt sluggish, crawling, gasping to catch up, and when they did it was with the lurching realisation of just how unfair it was that they had been brought here, to this cell, to this grotesque scenario, against their will.

Wilde undid the drawstring of his pants and stepped out of them. Dark hair ran in a soft line from his navel down, fanning out to the triangle that dipped between his legs. His face was carefully blank, as he lifted his hands, palms up, in a sardonic “ta-dah” gesture.

Zolf was frozen inside his mind, as Wilde turned slowly on the spot.

He did have a fantastic arse, the perfect balance of muscular and plush, and once again Zolf was furious that any hint of eros in this had been utterly perverted.

Wilde turned back to face Zolf and raised his eyebrows in a silent question. Zolf nodded again, his mouth dry. Wilde dressed, not rushed but efficient.

They sat in silence for a time.

“You never told me,” was all Zolf could think of to say.

“Fantastically witty and incisive commentary from one Zolf Smith, yet again,” Wilde said, voice like acrid smoke. Nothing made Wilde bite like losing the upper hand.

“I’m- I’m sorry. I jus’, I’ll go-” Zolf tried to walk and turn at the same time and knocked into the stool, clanging it down to the floor. He righted it with hands that shook and headed for the stairs.

“Zolf!” Wilde called after him. “You don’t have to leave.”

Well. That was as close to begging as Wilde ever got.

Zolf returned to his stool, and re-joined the silence. Wilde sat on the cot, watching the close wall of the cell with a face that Zolf recognised; it was one of Wilde’s favourite expressions, deliberately mild, open, waiting. It gave away nothing and invited everything. For Wilde, it was safety.

Other people, people who didn’t know Wilde as well, might take that as an invitation to speak. Zolf wasn’t other people. He thought about all the times he’d stumbled through something awkward, with good intentions but clumsy words. He had no idea how to proceed, other than it was probably wise to wait, and let Wilde find words first.

“Don’t feel bad about me not telling you.” Wilde said eventually. “It usually doesn’t come up, unless I’m sleeping with someone. Even then you’d be impressed at what can be achieved with creative use of props, dim lighting and a bit of magic.” He trailed his hand wistfully through the air, an impotent somatic component.

Zolf continued to wait, to leave the man space. Zolf wasn’t the one who’d been stripped, forced into a deeply personal disclosure without plan or intent.

“It’s not that I’m ashamed, you see. It's more… it feels like handing over a weapon, and I try to avoid that if I can. And well, I’m usually not in someone’s acquaintance long enough to feel bad about keeping it a secret.” There was an apology tucked between the words, and Zolf nodded even though Wilde wasn’t watching

He paused to run his thumb over the facial scarring, once, twice. “Bosie knew.”

Wilde let the silence stretch on long enough that Zolf felt like he had to speak or he would never stop thinking about skidding through Wilde’s blood on a cold stone floor. “You… you used to use your magic for it, righ’?”

Wilde barked out a harsh laugh. “Oh yes, for practically all of it! It was the reason I got so good at glamours! Back in Cairo I… I suspected that an anti-magic chamber or cuffs might halt the hexing, but I couldn’t, you see? I’d been doing it for so long. Everyone knew me as a man.” He shrugged, saying obviously with his shoulders. “I couldn’t go back.”

Zolf examined Wilde’s face. He was still carefully keeping his gaze on the cell wall. He still had that mild expression on his face, as though they discussed what to have for lunch, not one of the lowest points of his life. But he didn’t seem upset, so Zolf pressed on. “What happened?”

“Oh I…” he huffed a small laugh. “I got lucky. Turns out Grizzop already knew. I don’t think I reacted quite right when he punched me in the crotch.” Now something like genuine fondness crept into Wilde’s voice. “He suspected what might happen if I had to stop casting; he helped smooth things over. I was in no position to be fending for myself at that juncture, I had let the curse go on too long.” Wilde looked at his hands. “I will always be grateful to him.”

Wilde sounded like a man who knew, without a doubt, that the object of his gratitude was dead.

“Once it became clear the cuffs were going to become a permanent accessory, he set things up with the Cult of Aphrodite for me to have surgery and for them to supply the right potions. They have all the gear and know-how, of course. Not everyone in my position is a caster.”

Something else clicked in place for Zolf as he pondered the technicalities of non-magical surgery.

“Wait a minute. You were still recovering from that when we joined back up, weren’t you?”

Wilde’s brow crinkled as he considered timelines. “That’s right. Scarring needs to heal with almost no magical intervention, otherwise it’s back to square one. So it was… quite painful, to be quite honest. And compared to magical healing, the process drags on and on.”

Wilde smoothed a hand over his robe-clad chest. “I like it better this way now. No more binding my chest just in case, though I try to be careful about who sees the scars.” His voice was light, that faux-levelness starting to fade and he just, talked. Wilde was relieved, Zolf realised with a start. He wanted to tell Zolf about these things.

“It’s nice to just … be myself. Even at the end of day when I’m tired and can’t cast anymore.” And he finally looked at Zolf and smiled. Not a smirk or grin, just a completely open smile that welcomed Zolf into his joy instead of belittling or declaring victory with it. Even with the scar, sitting in a dim cell, he looked radiant.

As Zolf went to smile back, he felt his face wobble. This - Wilde smiling, confiding, being easy and honest with him - it was a better outcome than he could have hoped for. He felt the sudden bloom of Wilde’s smile in his chest, the warmth of the man’s trust.

But this was merely day one of seven, and it was still terrifyingly possible that the man who sat across from him was not Wilde at all. So Zolf’s smile twisted as it appeared on his face, and he didn’t reply, allowing them to lapse back into silence.

Day 2

“Wouldn’ it be- well not easier but less, I dunno- to just wait and do one inspection on the last day?” Zolf asked. He’d brought down breakfast and the paper, and they’d sat quietly as they ate; Wilde had finished eating and was starting on the motions of undressing.

“Zolf. My dear.” Wilde cocked his head in that patronising way that he did when he thought Zolf had said something legitimately dumb. “If I am reading your intentions correctly, your plan for the week is to eschew all your other jobs to waste away at my door-” Zolf opened his mouth to argue and Wilde simply raised his voice and pressed on “-not that I am complaining, but if you truly are going to while away the days with me, and then on the final day, you find out I have been infected the whole time and have to kill me, how, pray tell, is that going to make you feel?”

Zolf snapped his mouth shut.

“Wouldn’t you rather know as soon as it comes up?” Wilde pointed out, frustratingly reasonable.

Zolf simply wanted to throw the cell doors open because there didn’t seem any possibility that the man behind the bars was anything other than 100% pure, vexatious Oscar Wilde, but he stilled his twitching hand. Wilde’s question was to remain unanswered as Zolf simply gestured go on then and Wilde, with a grim, self-satisfied nod, started to strip.

Day 3

“No, don’tcha see, if Jennifer had gone to Antony in the garden, her mother would have known from the get-go-”

“But I simply don’t see how Alianne knowing would have improved things for Jennifer-”

“She was supportive, she could’ve helped smooth things over when Antony’s sister started her meddlin’, and they could have wrapped the whole thing up before supper!”

“Yes, but where is the fun in that, Zolf?”

Day 4

As Wilde dispassionately disrobed for a fourth time, Zolf realised there was now a familiarity to Wilde’s naked body, and that was jarring.

He wasn’t lanky, not really, but Zolf couldn’t help but think of most humans that way. The truth was he was solid enough in build, surprisingly muscular for a man who mostly rode a desk. His legs and arse especially were firm with it. He does a lot of walking about the village, I s’pose.

Zolf watched Wilde turn on the spot and he longed to trace the shape of Wilde’s shoulders, cup his ass, rub my damn nose in that soft lookin’ chest hair and…

Zolf ground his teeth against the wrongness of it all.

He thought of slipping his hands between Wilde’s legs, and though the shape of the fantasy had changed, the intensity had not.

It had been a long time since Zolf had felt a physical or sexual attraction like this, and the fact that it was at the most inconvenient time, and the most unlikely person, was enough to make him think he’d made a mistake breaking ties with Poseidon. Maybe if he hadn’t eschewed divine favour, he would have been protected from whatever trickster god had decided to throw this at him.

He kept his hands in his pockets so that Wilde wouldn’t see him clench his fists.

Maybe I should offer to strip too. At least that would put us on an equally horrible footing, Zolf mused.

Wilde dressed and turned back to look at Zolf with careful, watchful eyes. Wilde was in the business of reading even the most inscrutable enemies like a book, and at this point he had a thorough translation guide for Zolf. He knew it bothered the dwarf. The fact that Wilde hadn’t made a bunch of lewd comments was probably his idea of a kindness, but the absence of Wilde’s typical peacocking it somehow made it worse.

When he looked at him like that, it made Zolf feel like he was the one in the cell.

Zolf cleared his throat. “Got a new crossword book if you like?”

Day 5

“Pawn to E4.”

A chess board sat on a small table just outside the cell. Zolf moved the white pawn for Wilde then took his own move.

“Knight to G3.” Wilde said in a bored tone. He’d voted for bridge, but Zolf had talked him out of it. Too difficult to wrangle cards between the cell’s bars and mesh, he’d pointed out. Which was true, but what was also true was that Wilde was surprisingly bad at chess (it was much easier to cheat in cards).

Whilst Zolf did feel sympathy for Wilde, things weren’t so bad that Zolf wasn’t going to relish the opportunity to beat him at something for a change.

Day 6

Each day Wilde got closer to being comfortable with the inspections. Closer but not there. Half a lifetime of needing to be guarded about who saw your body created some strong foundational habits. That foundation wasn’t going to be eroded in seven days, regardless of how much you trusted the person who saw you.

But still, it could have been worse. Zolf shuddered to think what would have happened if this situation had been thrust on them a year ago. Their friendship, tenuous as it was, might not have been able to survive.

Dressing again, Wilde stretched the kinks out of neck. “I cannot wait to get out of here and have a proper bath and a nice long walk.”

“Nearly there.” Zolf said absently. He’d stopped needing to worry every second moment that Wilde was infected. Even though they’d been dealing with it all with distractions, with laughter, with pretending like it wasn’t happening, Zolf felt the sudden urge to be honest.

“I’m sorry that… that it happened like this. That you didn’t get a choice in tellin’ me about...” Your past? Your journey? Your truth? “…Everythin’.”

Wilde made a face of surprise, but instead of deflecting the offer of an honest conversation, he accepted. “Me too. I intended to, but as I said. I’m rarely… close enough with someone that I feel they deserve it. I wish-” Wilde paused, considering his next words, and what other weapons he might be handing over, deeply. “I wish that the circumstances had been different.”

Zolf could just ask what he meant. He could. It was practically an invitation for him to press, to force Wilde to clarify exactly under what circumstance he’d envisioned sharing secrets about his body with Zolf… but he didn’t.

Inside Zolf, uneasy guilt gnawed at him. The circumstances they had were only these ones. Wilde was vulnerable, caged, and thoroughly without a choice; but Zolf knew there were moments he’d chosen to ignore those elements. He knew, deep in his guilty core, he had been inspecting far more than he had the right. It didn’t feel honourable to press Wilde any further after that.

“Yeah.” Zolf stood. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Wilde. Last day ‘n all.”

Day 7

“It would have been too much to hope that the bloody sun would come out for this, wouldn’t it,” Wilde grumbled.

Freshly released, he was pondering umbrella selection in the entry hall.

“I’m guessing you don’t want me to come with,” Zolf ventured. Wilde had come out of his quarantine cheerful enough, but there was something understandably off about him; something distant and a little contemplative. Zolf had been half-expecting, or even hoping for, one of Wilde’s warm shoulder-touches. But he had kept his hands firmly to himself.

Wilde looked up, mouth twisted wryly. “I think I’ll be fine.” He hesitated, as he always did before saying something sincere. “I do appreciate what you’ve done for me this week, Zolf, but I could use a little space.”

Zolf nodded. He’d expected as much.

Inside him, the guilt twisted a little, the word violator rising in his mind. No. Neither of them had chosen anything about this situation. If anything, their connection felt even stronger for having been through the wringer, yet again. Whatever liberties Zolf accused himself of taking, it wasn’t enough to dent that.

We’re alright. Zolf thought.

We’ll be alright. I think we both could use a little time, is all.

Wilde selected the green umbrella, gave Zolf a tentative smile, and headed out into the rain.

Sam Winchester/Faith Lehane smut-meets-psychoanalysis coming at you tomorrow!

I’m about done with an extremely filthy Faith/Sam story. It could be read as a standalone, but it’s a sort of companion piece to Big Damn Heroes, and I figured I’d post the relevant piece of that in case anybody wants a little context without reading the whole thing. This excerpt is about 1k and PG-13ish.

Sam zones out of the discussion around the time Cas and Giles start talking comparative theology through the millennia. He slouches back on the couch and watches them fondly as Cas answers question after question. His eyelids feel heavy and he’s comfortable, and even though he knows he should take the opportunity to learn more about this totally new Earth, all he really wants to do is sit, and breathe, and rest.

Cas and Giles end up heading back to Giles’s house for tea and… something about an old book of etchings? Sam can’t really follow Giles’s breathless, excited rambling. He waves them off, thinking that he might actually go to sleep early, for once.

Sam goes to the kitchen, chugs a glass of water and then fills another, and he just stands there for a moment, one hip leaning against the counter as he looks around. It’s such a normal house. Even on their most domestic days, they’re still in a bunker. Must be nice to have a little bit of normalcy, no matter how crazy life gets. There’s faint music and the occasional giggle from upstairs, but otherwise, the house is quiet.

Of course, just as he has that thought, the front door slams open and someone shouts, “Yo, B! Ready to go?”

“She went out already,” Sam says, bemused.

He gets an impression of red lips, dark hair, and leather as the girl closes the door behind herself, moving whirlwind-quick. She plants her feet (loudly, in big stompy combat boots) and crosses her arms, looking at Sam suspiciously. Neither of them move for a second.

“I’m Faith,” she announces eventually. “Who the fuck are you, why the fuck are you in B’s kitchen, and where the fuck is she?”

“Sam, and… it’s a long story. She’s out patrolling with my brother, they left about an hour ago.”

Faith seems to make some sort of decision about him, and suspicion turns to mischief as she gives him a broad grin. “If your brother looks anything like you, can’t blame the girl for ditchin’ me.”

Sam’s mouth twitches as he tries to hold back a smile, and he takes a sip of water to cover it.

“Aww, you shy?” Faith teases. Her voice is low and raspy, kind of absurdly sexy, and she clearly knows it. “Must be one of those nice guys I’ve heard so much about.”

Sam doesn’t answer. He watches Faith stalk toward him.

She’s a fucking force of nature, Sam can already tell, all aggression and attitude as she comes at him with a challenge in her eyes. He doesn’t move when she gets up in his space, looking Sam up and down like she’s inspecting him. He has a feeling she’s used to people backing away before they let her get this close.

“Sam, huh? What brings you to Sunnydale?”

“Just passing through,” Sam says calmly. “What about you?”

“How do you know I’m not from around here?” she asks, looking up at him coyly.

Sam doesn’t dignify that with a response, just smirks and waits. She takes a step back and leans against the counter, mirroring his pose. Her eyes are sparkling.

“Fair enough. I’m a Slayer, figured I’d stick around in Sunnydale and help B for a while. Always seems to be somethin’ around here that needs its ass kicked.”

Sam cocks his head to the side, considering her. “So you fight vampires?”

“And whatever else is askin’ for a fight,” she retorts. “Why, is your brother a vampire?”

“What?”

“Buffy’s got a type. A demonic kinda type, if you know what I’m sayin’. Don’t worry, I won’t stake him.”

Sam laughs. Figures. “I wasn’t worried. Just curious if the superpowers are all they’re cracked up to be.”

“You better believe it,” Faith says proudly. “Strength, speed… stamina.” She says the last with a sly, unsubtle smirk, watching Sam to gauge his reaction.

“Show me,” he challenges. He doesn’t specify which one he means, and Faith raises one eyebrow.

“Right here? I figured you’d be the candlelight and Al Green type.”

Sam smiles. She’s not the first person to make that assumption.

The first punch is light, and he lets her see it coming; she dodges it easily, without so much as blinking. Sam’s left hand snakes out, lightning-fast this time, and she sidesteps neatly, grabbing his wrist instead and holding his arm in place. She’s stronger than he expected, and she’s grinning like this is the most fun she’s had all week.

“Sure about this? I wouldn’t want to hurt you,” she says, sugary-sweet.

The next punch is in earnest. She blocks it, throws one of her own, and then it’s a blur for a moment, a flurry of blows one after another, none of them landing. Neither of them are moving their feet much, trapped in the narrow space between the counter and the kitchen table; they’re just testing each other.

“Not bad,” Sam admits.

“Right back atcha.”

She takes a couple steps backward, out into the open space, and Sam follows, watching closely. This time she lets loose with a flashy spin-jump-kick thing like something out of a cheesy action movie, and Sam’s laughing as he ducks.

“Points for style, but not for substance,” he teases.

She comes back at him twice as hard and almost gets him this time, but then he snatches her wrists and slams her back against the wall with a thunk that’s a whole lot louder than he expected. They both wince and freeze.

“Everything okay?” Willow yells from upstairs.

Charlie’s pissy voice adds, “Please don’t tell me that was a monster.”

“Just tripped,” Sam shouts back. He looks down at Faith, taking a half-step closer so that there’s maybe an inch of space between their bodies. He’s still got her wrists pinned over her head. She’s definitely not trying to get away. He has a feeling she could, easily, if she wanted to.

“Not so nice after all, then,” she purrs, looking up at him through her lashes.

Sam shakes his head slightly. “Not so much. You giving up, then?”

“Not a fuckin’ chance. Just thinkin’ maybe we should have the rematch back at my place. You know, in case you ‘trip’ again.”

“Sounds like a good idea.”

I think I’ve touched on this in other ways before, but perhaps not directly, so thank you for the opportunity!

To restate the question: does Kisuke believe his own behavior and activities to be governed by moral principles? Does he consider them morally correct?

If I were to take this opportunity to deep-end on where moral principles come from, and why we have ethics, we’d never get out of this meta. And that was starting to happen before I put on the brakes and began rewriting the ten paragraphs I had so far. So instead, I’ll just recommend you look into that on your own; maybe starting with The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt.

I’ll just assert that Kisuke does seem to have his own set of guiding principles: a desire for forward progress, balanced with compassion. There is much he says and does to maintain the balance of the universe throughout the series, but unlike Mayuri, Aizen, and Yhwach, he is unwilling to increase non-consensual suffering for it.

But wait, you say. Doesn’t he have consent issues? And doesn’t he get carried away with the possibilities of research avenues without considering consequences? …and here’s where our concept of what’s ethical probably does clash with Kisuke’s. We can look at him implanting a foreign object in an unwitting young lady, or effectively killing and torturing a young man to help him grow stronger, or turning a woman into a mindless beast to help win a battle, or creating his own child soldiers from unknown genetic material, or creating a sentient wishing-stone capable of stupendous and terrifying power, and collectively tilt our heads and say ehhhhhh… looks like some potential for suffering to us. But what’s interesting is that in none of those cases did he deal lasting damage. Before he ever implanted the Hōgyoku into Rukia, he had already developed a harmless means of retrieving it. Before he tormented Ichigo, he was fully aware of his potential and had his buy-in. Yoruichi may hate that form, but he knew she’d revert back. He was beside Tessai (and beside himself) when Ururu was injured; he clearly hadn’t intended her to engage with a force that powerful. And the Hōgyoku… well, he did try to destroy that, very early on, but I don’t think he was aware that it was aware. Plus, he failed.

There is a darkness in him that’s evident when his bloodlust is invoked. He seems to enjoy a fight just a little too much. And he’s all too keenly aware of his own proclivities to push boundaries. He knows the power he wields could do just as much harm as good, and the temptation to wield it indiscriminately is ever present. Perhaps that is why, even in battle, he practices surprising restraint. He had Benihime at Yammy’s throat and didn’t deliver the coup de gras. He lopped off one of Luppi’s tentacles, but that didn’t seem to set him back. He split open Askin’s arm and not his head. Why doesn’t he go for the kill?

In fact, in general, if we look at his actions, it is difficult to really read out of them any deliberate intent to harm. And this, to him, is self-consistent with his principles, and qualitatively different from deciding that any amount of harm is justifiable. So from his perspective, is he ethical?

I’m not going to answer that, because I can see him pulling down his brim and giving me a sinister chuckle. Fine, Kisuke, play the villain if you like.

By Land and Sea

When Sonic makes a bet with Amy, it backfires almost immediately. He has come face to face with one of his greatest fears but, at the same time, he isn't one to back down from a challenge. Can he beat Amy at a swimming race or will he flounder? This is the third part of my Sonamy Week catch up! This fic was written for the race prompt! It’s a little over 4.5k words long, I hope you will enjoy!

"This isn't what I agreed to, Ames."

"Oh, it's exactly what you agreed to, my darling." He could hear the delight in her voice; though his eyes were turned from her the blue hedgehog could plainly see the grin on her face. "You promised that if I beat you in a race you'd go on a date with me."

No, he wasn't looking at her; instead, his eyes were fixed upon the racetrack before him. The very racetrack he took issue with. Marked with floating orbs and, no more than 200 metres away, a flagpole that slowly bobbed from side to side. Two lanes of ocean had been isolated, made into a path through the positioning of small orb-shaped buoys. The two met at their ends, a larger central buoy with a blue flag marking the midway point. If the water were land it'd be simple, as fast as Amy was he'd beat her to the marker, around it and back. He'd probably pass her before she got halfway up her lane… well, maybe three quarters. But the sea was a different matter, they were stood on a beach rather than a raceway. Though he avoided water, he'd seen Amy swimming before. She was good and fast, while he might as well have been made from lead. The blue hedgehog needed a life preserver to keep himself above the surface, let alone swim a straight line. No matter how he tried to bolster himself, throwing his eyes to the sky or focusing on that flag, fear and, an emotion he so rarely faced, doubt was plaguing him.

There was a tug at his wrist. Shuddering, he pried his eyes away; allowing them to meet those of Cream. Innocent and full of empathy, she spoke. "I'm afraid that is what you said Mister Sonic. You didn't specify what kind of race, you only said that Miss Amy had to beat you."

"She's got you there, Sonic. You should've been more specific." From his other side he'd heard Tails, the young fox he trusted more than anyone, betray him over the silly technicality. "You kinda brought this upon yourself."

"D-Don't side with them Tails! You know what I meant just like they do! I mean really. When I say race, is your first thought actually…" He shuddered, looking to the lapping waves ahead of them. "…Swimming?"

Amy's didn't hesitate to answer, gleefully posing a question of her own. "Come on Sonic, what would you call this if not a race?"

Many phrases rushed through Sonic's head; a death trap, a nightmare, a one-way ticket to a watery grave, but he settled on, "Lame. Just plain lame." Unable to stomach it, he turned around; eyes closed and chin raised. "It's like challenging Knuckles to chess after he says he can beat anyone in a one on one match, or askin' the Chaotix to solve maths problems rather than mysteries. It's just not what they do, just like I don't swim."

Cream gasped, innocently taken aback. "Oh no, does that mean you're giving up Mister Sonic?"

"Of course not Cream." He'd turned back to the young rabbit, lowering himself to better look her in the eye. "Even if Amy's better at…" Despite having spoken it once already, the word 'swim' felt gross in his mouth. He shook off its vile taste, continuing to reassure the little girl. "Even if Amy's better at this than me, I've got to give it my best shot! No matter how scared you are Cream, you should never back down." It wasn't his best motivational speech, but then he wasn't in the best headspace. He was bolstering himself almost as much as he was trying to send a message.

The young rabbit gave a strong nod, the little chao in her arms matching it. "You're right Mister Sonic! You should always do your best, even when defeat is certain. You might get lucky!" It wasn't quite the glowing affirmation he'd hoped for; even though he knew the rabbit was being genuine, her lack of faith did scuff his pride. Before her wounding could show, she'd turned to face Amy. "Cheese and I will go set things up. Good luck both of you!"

With that, Cream rushed away from the group; what she had left to set up Sonic had no idea. There was a beat of silence, his gut wouldn't let him turn toward the sea and yet he didn't have the strength to face Amy. Thus, he looked to the sky; the sun was shining, the day was windless and only had a few clouds to its name. If this were it a regular race, these would be the perfect conditions.

"Sonic." All of a sudden his imagined visage of Amy was discarded, the anxious way she'd said his name had stripped it all away. "Are you actually scared? You know we don't have to do this if you don't want to"

"Me? Scared?" He snorted, both attempting to reassure her while, simultaneously, puffing himself up. "Yeah right."

"Well, supposing you were, there's nothing to worry about." Unfortunately, his words hadn't been quite enough. She probably wanted him to meet her eye. "The waters are calm today and we shouldn't be at sea any longer than ten minutes. Besides, we're not going too far out."

Finding the strength, he looked to her. Sure enough, there was a glint of concern in her eyes, hands clasped before her. He grinned, shaking his head. "Honestly Ames, I was just putting on a show to make the kids think you stand a chance. Keep things interesting. I'll totally be able to…" The word 'swim' caught on his tongue again, its mere thought made him queasy, but he forced himself through it; maintaining bravado. "Win this race, no sweat."

"Oh really? You're not?" Following his show of confidence, her concern had mostly slipped away, a smile sliding into its place. Amy had leant in, standing on her tiptoes to match his height. "It's cute seeing you flustered for once, Sonic." Perhaps his queasiness wasn't so easily hidden. "Don't worry; I'm sure it'll be an easy lap." There were few cockier than him and so, when it came to smugness, he could recognise it from a mile away. "If anything happens just call me and I'll swim over to save you. I want you in one piece for our date after all."

Attempting to exceed her cockiness, Sonic rose to his own toes and outsized her once more. A winning smirk returned to his lips. "Don't you worry about me Ames, it may be calm now but as soon as I'm out there it's going to get choppy. Maybe duck under when I pass by, the waves are gonna be huge."

"Yes Sonic, I'm terrified of your doggy-paddle." Once again, his endeavour had failed. "Well, as long as I can hear your screaming over the splashing you're in safe hands." Amy lowered herself, turning on her heel, but before she left she looked back to him, a gentler smile on her face. "As much as I want to win, more than that, I hope you have fun; I know you enjoy competition after all. Good luck Sonic!"

"Y-Yeah, good luck Ames!" He ran his finger beneath his nose and, before he could stop himself, called out in reassurance. "Don't worry so much, swimming or running, I like spending time with you." He almost bit through his tongue as she turned around. A pinkness matching her hair had snuck onto her cheeks. "I mean, having you around keep things interesting… you know what I mean?"

Amy's hands clasped, her smile blinding. "Aww, Sonic! Of course, I know what you mean!"

When Miss Rose turned around the spring in her step had more than doubled. He rubbed his forehead. Sonic wasn't sure which parts of that conversation he regretted and, while he was no stranger to making a fool of himself, the knot in his stomach and heat he was feeling were a little too much to handle. He took a deep breath, circling his shoulders, and tried to push out such thoughts. What's done was done, he'd talked a big game so he had to do something… even if winning wasn't in the cards. Just what that something was, he had no idea. Planning was difficult…

"If you're so worried about it why don't you just run off?" Tails question pulled Sonic from his stupor; the little fox had raised a good point. "It's not like you haven't before."

"As stupid of a race as this is, I did kind of promise her, you know?" He ran a hand through his quills, continuing to ignore the heat on his cheeks. "Running off now, it'd just be wrong. Uncool even."

"Wow, I guess this really was smart of her. I didn't realise your word to her meant that much." A glance to Tails proved a fact he'd feared, there was a broad grin on his face. The smugness was spreading.

Flashing his own grin Sonic reached down, ruffling the young fox's ears. "Nah, it's just that Cream's here. Got to be a good role model, after all, I can't let her think heroes back down from a challenge. Let alone lie."

The young boy snorted. "Yeah right, you just don't want to admit it."

"Admit what?" He feigned ignorance.

"Though you whined about the race, and I'm sure you'll moan when you lose, you don't think Amy winning would be such a bad thing." Sonic could practically hear his influence in the young boy's taunts. "In fact, I bet you want to go on that da-

The hedgehog continued to noogie him, further messing his fur and cutting him off. "Yeah, well, when I beat her in this race I'll prove you doubly wrong, won't I? That'll be a change."

Finally, the boy genius pushed him off. The grin on his fluffy muzzle was forced into view. "Lucky I brought your inflatable then, isn't it? Or will you not be needing them, seeing as you're so confident."

Hands crossed over his heart, an overly pained expression overcame the Blue Blur's face. Bending his right leg he allowed himself to lean on the young fox as if he'd been gravely wounded. "My own little bro, siding with the enemy. Where did I go wrong? You knew about this, you knew they'd tricked me all this time and yet you said nothing. Oh Tails, how could you?" His right arm raised to cross his brow as he began to mock cry; "My own bro, betrayed by my own bro!"

Laughter erupted beneath him, Sonic heard the sound of feet struggling to kick up sand as the little fox struggled to support him; "It's not like I could've done anything about it, you agreed before I could say anything."

At that, Sonic brought himself to stand straight; whipping a final faux tear from his eye. "I suppose I'll find it in my heart to forgive you then. Stop me next time though, alright? Tackle me to the ground if you have to, you're meant to be my brains."

"Fine, fine, I promise I'll stop you next time." Tails promised. Reaching behind himself and into a small rucksack, the youth pulled out a dark blue lifejacket. On its shoulder a new addition, a bright orange whistle on an extendable cord.

Sonic took it with a sigh, pulling it over his shoulders before doing the buckle around his belly. "You're really confident in me winning, aren't you Tails?"

He shrugged, that smugness had returned. "Better to be safe than sorry,"

The blue blur turned back to the water, Amy wasn't lying when she said it was calm. It must have been close to low tide but the beach was long and empty. A glance further up the bank revealed Cream and Cheese, staking two flags into the sand; both their finish line and likely starting point. So, there would be a dash from land to water before the true challenge started. While at first he'd thought this would merely give him a small head start, an idea snuck its way to the forefront of his mind. There was a technique that, while difficult, he had performed before in times of crisis. The sand sprawled out far enough for it, the only problem he could really foresee was rounding the midway buoy, a sharp turn. If he could control his turning long enough to manage that then things would be fine. Running on water, well… it was worth a shot at least?

"Well, good luck finding your nerve. I'm sure you'll have fun on the date." Before Sonic could get in another word, Tails had taken off; tail spinning as he rushed over to aid the young rabbit.

Rolling his eyes, Sonic opened the valve in his lifejacket and started to blow; inflating it until he felt safe. The young fox wasn't necessarily wrong; even if this plan didn't work out he was more scared of the water than he was the practically inevitable date. Despite his stutter and regret, he hadn't lied; he did enjoy spending time with her. Amy was always excited to see him and she could pull reactions from him that no one else could. She kept him going like no one else could. Pacing, he cast his eyes across the water's surface; watching the waves froth as they broke against pale sand. It really was gross, everything from the scent of salt to the sound told him he wasn't meant to be here. Even the sand beneath his feet was uneven; it kicked up with every step and certainly didn't make for smooth running. Standing on the beach was definitely way worse than lying on the beach, at least then he could keep his distance from the water, listen to music and properly daydream.

"I thought I'd be seeing you at the starting line, I'm surprised you're still hanging back here." Amy had returned, freeing him from his thoughts. "You'll be swimming in your shoes then?"

"Figured I'd end up waiting for you no matter what." He grinned, turning to her as they wandered toward the finish line. "And well, if we're starting with a sprint I ought to get the most out of my head start."

Her red dress had been shed in place of a red swimsuit. While he tried not to think too long about it, let alone stare too long, he did think it suited her. It was a simple, red, one-piece suit but, around the waist, it had additional fabric that flared out to give the guise of a white skirt with a thin red hem.

"I thought you were going to win this race no sweat." She teased.

Winning would still be difficult but with his plan in mind; there was a spark of genuine confidence in his heart. "Well yeah, but this way you won't even make it to the water. No point in you getting soaked over what's sure to be a landslide victory."

"Oh, we'll see about that." They arrived at the starting line, Cream having gathered pebbles from the surrounding area to construct the start/finish line itself and flags being planted to better separate their lanes. "If you're going to do your best, so will I."

As she started to stretch, warming up well for someone certain they'd win, he couldn't help noticing Amy's hairband had been replaced with a messy bun; her quills bundled near the back of her head. Despite telling himself he wouldn't, he'd found himself staring at the cute sight; pulled in by her excitement. Tearing himself away he reached across his body, beginning a stretch of his own.

With the kids continued to set things up, Tails preparing a camera in case (by some miracle) a photo finish occurred, Sonic saw idle opportunity to pry. "So Ames, what did you have in mind for that date?"

"You'll just have to wait and see." She swapped from crossing her right arm against her body to the left.

"What, no spoilers?" He bent down, touching his toes before reaching behind himself; feeling his calves warm. "Come on Amy, give me a hint at least."

"I know the only way to keep you interested is to keep you on your toes," She continued to refuse. "If I told you now, wouldn't you get bored?"

"A deal's a deal, isn't it? I'm coming on the date if you win, no matter how gross it is." Another glance to Amy found her mid-lunge, returning his gaze. "But that doesn't matter, I'm only asking 'cause I'm gonna win. Tell me now, it might convince me to lose on purpose."

"We both know, as soon as your feet leave the sand, you're going to get stuck my darling." She jested. "Regardless, I want you to enjoy yourself on the date so…"

"So?" He quirked a brow, awaiting her statement.

"Well…I haven't quite decided what we're doing yet." That surprised him; Amy had been asking him out for as long as he could remember… yet she had nothing planned? She elaborated. "I've waited so long for this, I've had my heart set on so many ideas, but now it's so close I'm not sure what I want to do." She stood straight, rolling some final kinks out of her shoulders. "Twinkle Park, going to the movies, getting dinner… I can't decide." There was a sparkle in her eyes that, coupled with the glow in her cheeks brought on by her warm-up, was too much for him.

Maybe, if his plan did work out, he'd treat her to something anyway. Go out for chilidogs or maybe just hang around the beach a little longer, today felt like an ice cream and relaxing kind of day.

Having caught himself staring again, Sonic turned away. "Well, it's good you're not set on anything seeing as I'm gonna win."

"In your dreams my darling Sonic." The pink hedgehog had taken her place on the starting line, lowering herself to a crouching start position.

Sonic matched it, fingertips buried in the sand and eyes locked on the path ahead. The running lane couldn't be longer than twenty metres, even that was a higher estimate. Still, he figured it would be enough to build up the speed, he'd grab onto the buoy on the way around for turning leverage. Yeah, that seemed like it'd work!

At the edge of his lane stood Tails and at Amy's stood Cream, both prepared a flag in one hand and a whistle in the other. Cream was beaming. "The first one back wins! Good luck you two!"

"On your marks…"

"Get set…"

With the blow of the whistle he was off, kicking up sand and bolting forward as fast as he could; not a glance to Tails nor even back to Amy as he claimed his lead. No sound but his footfalls and breathing filled his ears, vision tunnelled on the midway buoy. Soon the dull thudding of his feet turned to splashing, the smack of his soles against water, he had to be prepared for that; had to maintain his pace, quicken it even. He could feel the wind cutting against his cheeks, muffling the sun's warmth as the pounding of his heart grew faster.

Then it happened, the first splash; he'd arrived in the shallows! Sonic closed his eyes, refusing brace himself lest it slowed him. Seaspray coated his body, beads of water like bullets buried into his fur to mingle the salt of his sweat with their own. His footfalls continued; short, rapid, splashes that blurred into each other, making it impossible to identify how far out to sea he was. Confident he could keep this up, the hedgehog's eyes reopened. As he could feel, the waters directly in front of him were flickering up with every step; colliding with his legs and bare stomach. He refocused on the buoy, growing closer with every fraction of a second, in preparation he reached out with his right arm. It couldn't have been ten seconds since he'd left the beach, probably closer to five.

The hedgehog lent in preparation for the turn. Contact was made with the flag. His fingers coiled around the pole's length. A resounding snap cut through his wet footfalls. The flagpole hadn't been strong enough to handle his speed and had broken in two; before he could even realise what had happened it was dragging behind him. The drag from the pole had an immediate impact on his speed, rather than bounce off the surface Sonic's next footfall splashed straight through it. Sonic quickly let go of the pipe but it was already too late, his slowed (but still considerable) momentum led him to bounce off the surface twice, splashing deeper each time, before he found himself submerged and spinning.

The world was a blur, his mouth opened only to fill with seawater as his head dunked time and time again, carried by his own prior speed. When he finally stabilised and surfaced he'd completely lost his bearings, coughing and spluttering the hedgehog found himself surrounded by ocean; kept afloat by his life vest more than his awful attempt to tread water. His shoes waterlogged, he could already feel them starting to slip. Limbs smacking against the surface, Sonic was struggling to turn. Craning his neck, bobbing as though he were tempest-tossed, Sonic could see the base of the buoy and, no more than a few metres beyond that floating grey orb, a bobbing pink head on the approach.

Having spat up what was either his fourth or fifth mouthful of water, he felt a wave meet with his back and push him ever so slightly closer to the floater. He knew he was supposed to lean forward, kick his legs and swing his arms, but the position was just too bizarre to him. The hedgehog was at his best upright, sprinting, not lying down and flailing. Thus, precisely as Amy had predicted, Sonic found himself doggy paddling; arms fumbling through the water as he ran in place. His pace was gruelling, though he continued to wriggle the truth he'd always known had set in. In the water, he stood no chance of beating Amy.

Her consistent, fast-paced, breaststroke was cutting through the water unfazed by its gentle waves. As he watched the pink hedgehog approach he did, admittedly, feel himself relax. Tail's lifejacket, despite its condescending whistle, was keeping his head well above the water despite his frantic efforts. He wasn't comfortable but, at the very least, seeing her so close made him feel safe. Before he could quite make it to the buoy she'd pulled up in front of him, coming to a halt and treading water so very casually.

Soaked and ragged, he used most of his remaining smarm. "Hey, Ames. Long time no see."

"Hey." That prior cockiness wasn't there, instead that gentle smile she'd worn when she'd worried about his fear. "Need a little help?"

"Maybe just a little, looks like you're goin' my way and getting there way faster than me." He smiled.

"Nothing to it but practice." She'd gotten closer still, floating shoulder to shoulder with him. "Wrap your arm around me and I'll show you."

He fully stopped treading water, taking her offer and allowing herself to properly float with her. It'd be a lie to say he wasn't embarrassed but, given the situation, he thought he was keeping his cool rather well. "I think it'll be lost on me but I'll give it a shot."

Amy lowered herself, laying flat in the water, and began to swim again. She'd slowed yes, head permanently raised above the water rather than bobbing, but her pace was still ten times what his had been, "You just need to understand that, as long as you keep moving, you'll keep floating."

"You say that but without this vest, I'd have sunk like a stone regardless of how hard I struggled." He explained.

"That's where the practice comes in, the more you do it the longer you'll manage to stay up."

"I'm sure you're right Ames, but, I think I'll just stick to dry land wherever I can." He couldn't help staring at her as she swam; powerful arms cutting through the water. Words seemed to bubble up without his say. "Then again, I guess I would like to practice running on water some more. If I'd made it around that corner I'd have beat you for certain."

"Well, if you want another shot at it you could always challenge me to another race." He could tell she was joking, at least mostly, "Although, I've yet to decide on our first date, let alone a second…"

As she raised the deal again, a thought entered the hedgehog's head, one he hadn't considered until now. Thinking fast, Sonic waggled his forefinger; "I said if you won I'd go on a date with you, not what kind of date we'd be going on." Finally, having been soaked and beaten, things were back to their natural state. He was the one being cocky. "That means I get to pick what we do."

"Oh Sonic, you really think that matters to me? Of course, you can pick our first date! I'd love that!" Her swimming slowed, she'd turned to look over her shoulder. A smile had spread across her lips, still gently pulling him along. "I didn't pick this race because I knew I'd win, I picked it so you couldn't keep running once you cleared the finishing line. Any time spent with you is a good time."

"Y-Yeah, sure, wh-whatever, Ames." Though he couldn't bring himself to admit it, surrounded by ocean and blushing profusely, he felt the same.

Scavenger Hunt || B.M.

Pairing: Brian May x reader

Warnings: drinking, swearing other than that just some wholesome romance

Gender: not specified.

Synopsis: Your long-term boyfriend, Brian, has been acting funny all week. Whenever you ask, he brushes you off One day he asks you to clear you evening for a special date, which leads you on a wild goose-chase all over town.

Your eyes open slowly to the view of your long-term boyfriend, Brian May. A tired smile plays on your lips as you watch his eyes twitch about under his lids. You wonder what he could be dreaming about. By the looks of his expression he seems to be having a good dream. You press the back of your index finger to his cheek, stroking it gently against his stubbly skin. After a moment, his eyes pop open and settle on you. “Good morning, darling.” he says, sleep still abundant in his voice. “Good morning, Bri.” you smile back. He grunts a little and shifts so he can hold you closely by the waist. You settle in close to his chest as he rests his head on top of yours. “What were you dreaming about, love?” you ask him after a few moments of silence. “You.” he replies. You smile into his chest, then look up to place a soft kiss on his jaw. He looks down at you, eyes full of admiration. “I want to take you out tonight. What time will you be home from work?” Brian inquires, rubbing the small of your back with his thumb. “Hmmm... about 7:00, I suppose?” you reply. You cock a brow at him. “Why? Date night isn’t until Friday, love. It’s only Tuesday.” “Does that mean I’m not allowed to take the love of my life out any other day?” he snickers you scrunch your face and shrug. “I suppose not.” “Perfect. I can’t wait!” he says. There is something childlike in his voice. “What is this about, Brian?” “I’ll tell you later.” He places a tender kiss on your forehead, and, with that, he gets up and starts getting dressed, leaving you slightly dumbfounded. As you both get ready in the morning, he refuses to answer any questions. All he would answer with was “You’ll see, my love.” and an excited smile.

“You’ve been acting funny all week, Brian. What’s going on?” you ask over breakfast.

Brian looks up at you as he takes a sip of his tea and smiles nervously against the rim. He sets it down and shakes his head.

“It’s nothing, love. Truly, I’m fine.”

“Brian Harold May, I have hardly seen you this week.” your eyes fill with worry. Still he doesn’t break.

”It will all make sense later... I promise.” And gets up to leave for the studio.

______ “Brian? I’m home! You here?” You call, stepping into the threshold of your home.. There’s no reply. Wasn’t he supposed to be taking you out? You walk into the kitchen find something to tide you over. Brian had told you not to eat when you came home, but you couldn’t help yourself. You pull out an apple and begin munching on it. Your eyes glance around the room. Finally, they settle on an envelope with your name beautifully written onto it. You set down your apple and go to pick it up. You pop open the wax seal and unfold the paper within.

“(Y/n) Sorry I have hardly been home to greet you with a kiss. I promise tonight, though, you won’t regret this. I am sending you off on a little spree To find roses three, and then find me. Your first rose is where we first met. I bought you a drink after Smile’s set. Go there and speak to the bartender. The second clue, he will surrender. -Bri” You smile and roll your eyes. This was just like him. He was never one to want the public to see his love story, but he would make a big deal out of it.. You get dressed into something more comfortable than a work uniform and set out. You call for a taxi and give the address for the pub. On the ride, you remember the day you two met. ___ You were having a fun night to yourself, dancing in your seat at the bar to the music. You couldn’t help but eye the guitarist the whole time. He was so handsome! You could’ve sworn he was eyeing you too. At the end of the gig, you turned back to the bar and ordered a negroni. “It’s on me.” You heard a voice come from behind as an arm slid between you and the counter, putting down a couple pounds. You turn to see just who had the set to buy you a drink to see the guitarist. He was slightly tipsy already and sweaty from his performance. Somehow he was more beautiful up close. “My drink’s on me” you smirked, sliding back the money. “I insist, love.” he slid it back, brows raised. The bartender eyed him carefully and looked to you in case he needed to intervene.

“Well, I suppose if you insist…” you looked at the bartender and he nods. He fixed you the drink and set it on the counter. You thanked him and turned back to the guitarist.

“So do they give you a name with all that hair?” you inquire, taking a sip of your drink.

“Ah- Brian. Brian May.” he said to you.

“Nice name. I’m (y/n).” you stated.

“I enjoyed the music by the way. You boys put on quite a show.”

A smile played on Brian’s, and you swore your heart stopped for a minute.

“Thanks. I appreciate it. Now, how does someone like you end up in a place like this?” he cocked a brow up at you.

“Oh, I’m a regular here. Come every Friday night to see the bands play. I’ve had a knack for music, but never saw myself playing in front of people.” you confessed.

“Well, I’ll keep that in mind.” Brian winked at you. You felt your jaw open slightly.

The rest of the night you spent getting to know one another, about your majors, likes, dislikes, and everything under the sun. He definitely held you to you being a regular as his band, smile, then renamed Queen, began showing up on the roster frequently. After each gig, he would pack up his equipment as fast as he could and B-lined to you to converse.

You pull up to the pub and walk in. You haven’t frequented here since your uni days. It feels as if nothing has changed, other than the people. You turn to the bar and see the same bartender that’s been there since you were a regular.

“Benny? That you?” you walk over disbelievingly at the skinny bearded man polishing glasses behind the counter.

“Who’s askin?” Benny inquires in his gruff Scottish tone. He turns around and his grim complexion brightens up at the sight of you.

“(Y/n)? Why, I haven’t seen ye since ye came here lamenting about yer finals! How’ve ya been!” his smile seems to reach his ears.

“You remember me?” you laugh. He comes around the bar to give you a big squeeze.

“Course I do! How could I forget my best tipper? Plus, you were in here every Friday night for the bands. Uhhh…. Negroni, right? Should I get one for ya? On the house, of course.” Instantly, he begins setting out bottles.

“Not tonight, sorry… I think my boyfriend left something for me here?”

“Tall fella? Wild hair?”

“That’d be him.” You chuckle at the description.

“Yeah he left ye a note and a rose. Says it was important.” He takes an envelope out from under the counter before handing you a yellow rose.

“Thank you, Benny. I really appreciate it.”

“Not a problem, love. You take care-a yerself out there, ye hear me? Don’t be a stranger.”

“I won’t. I’ll see you around.”

You pop outside the pub and lean against the wall. You smell the rose and sigh, then turn your attention to the second envelope.

“(Y/n)

If you’re reading this, of course you knew,

Where we first met it was all brand new.

I wanted to go steady since day one,

But as friends we’d remain til they day I called for fun.

Your second rose is our first date

That night you agreed to be my mate.

Look for the tree where we shared our first kiss

The note will be there, it’s not hard to miss.

Just as you finish reading, a familiar voice catches your ear.

“Hello, beautiful, need a lift?” A blond man in sunglasses pulls up at the curb. You look up and laugh.

“Roger, what’s going on?”

“I figured you’d need a ride to your next location. It’s across town. Wouldn’t want you getting tired on your first stop.” he dips his glasses down and gives you a charming wink. You stifle a giggle again and get into the car. He gives you a side-hug and starts up the car again. Off you speed as you think about your first date with Brian.

Ring ring ring

You went to the phone and picked it up.

“This is (y/n). Who am I receiving?” you greeted.

“Hello, (y/n). It’s Brian.” your eyes lit up at the sound of his voice.

“Ah! Brian. Always a pleasure. How are you today?”

“I’m doing quite well. I wanted to see if you were free this afternoon? Perhaps you’d….want to go for a walk with me.”

You thought for a minute about this. Was this a date? You suppose you’d see. You smiled into the phone and said, “I’d love to Brian. Drop by around 3.”

“Sounds perfect! I’ll see you then.”

3:00 hit and Brian was right on the dot, if not a little early when he knocked on your door.

“Brian May, fancy seeing you here.” you let him come in and enveloped him in a hug.

“Well, I was just in the neighborhood, so I wanted to pop by.” he winked. You finish getting your shoes on and head out.

“It’s a lovely afternoon. I figured we’d do coffee and stroll in the park? My treat by the way.” he said, taking your hand. You feel a spark run through your system. You smiled up at him. He seemed a little red in the face.

“You spoil me way too much, Brian!” you chuckled. It caused him to relax slightly.

You took your coffee to go and headed to the park. It was the perfect temperature out-not too hot, not too cold. A few fluffy white clouds strolled through the sky by the light breeze, but otherwise it was sunny. It was a stunning day in Hampton. You set down by an oak tree growing in the grass and watched as children and pets played on the far side of the field. You took a sip of your coffee, enjoying the fresh brew thoroughly. You talked with Brian about your days, classes, and what have you. The conversation flowed as smoothly as the coffee.

“Brian, it’s a beautiful day, isn’t it.” you said, taking another sip of your drink.

“Mm, I suppose it is.” he replied. His tone seemed a bit…. preoccupied as his gaze was fixed down at the ground. You noticed this take turned to him.

“Is… everything okay, Bri?” you asked.

“I’m so hopelessly in love with you and I don’t know how to say it.” he sighs

“You what?” you nearly choked on your drink.

He shot his gaze back at you, beet red.

“Bloody hell, I said that out loud, now didn’t I?” he dropped his head to his hand and rubbed his temple.

“Uh, yeah.” you replied, turning just as rosy.

“God, I’m sorry. I was planning on it being much smoother, but here we are. I understand if you don’t feel the same, of course. I value your friendship above all, and I would never want to lose you-“ you cut him off with a kiss that even you didn’t think about. He jolted and quickly eased into it, cupping the base of your jaw with one hand and propping himself up with the other. His lips were warm and soft and tasted of his freshly brewed coffee. It made you wild. As you both pulled back, you rested your foreheads to one another.

“So, I take that as a ‘yes’?” Brian chuckled.

“You really need to ask that?” you grinned at him and pressed another kiss to his lips.

When you arrive at the park, it’s nearly empty, save for a figure standing under the oak tree you and Brian shared your first kiss under. You thank Roger for the ride. He nods and points at the figure.

“That’s where you’re gonna want to go next. You roll your eyes playfully at him.

“I gotta go, but have fun on this little adventure!”

“See you ‘round, Rog.” you hug again and get out. You head toward the figure under the tree. He is sitting alone holding a single rose.

“John, that you?” you call out.

“Hello, (y/n).” he greets you with a smile. You pick up your pace and wrap him a big hug. He hands you a single red rose, which you take carefully into your hand.

“I suppose you’re in on this wild goose chase Brian’s sending me on, too?” you ask jokingly.

“Indeed I am. I’m also supposed to be your escort to the next location. He didn’t want you having to go all that way alone.”

“And where would that be?” John doesn’t reply but gives you your third envelope tonight. You read it aloud.

“(Y/n)

If you’re reading this, it means Roger got you to the next spot alive.” you chuckle and John rolls his eyes, though, he is grinning. You continue on.

“I know how close you and John got to be as friends, so I want to take you to where the magic happens.

You’ve been such a support to me and the band,

We’re honored you’re here to lend a helping hand.

You’ve almost collected your roses three, so soon you will be home to me.

The third rose will make its mark

When we all stayed at the studio til well after dark.

PS: it’s a longer drive, and I trust John the most in his driving ability.

You think for a minute about where you’ll be headed next. It comes to you fairly soon after.

“We’re going to Sarm, then?” you ask John. He nods.

“That was such a long day! You boys really needed to relax.”

John chuckles and offers you an arm to talk to his car.

“You were a lifesaver that day.” he says.

You walked into the studio after a coffee run to find the boys fighting again.

“The lyrics just aren’t strong enough, I think.” Brian stated coolly

“I don’t care about the lyrics currently, but it’s SO SLOW. God it’s…. creeping at the moment!” Roger fumed.

“You’re playing the fucking 12-string” John said through the mic.

“Okay, boys, take- take two” Freddie interjected. Brian mimicked crying noises at Roger who sneered back. He saw you come in and calls out to you.

“Tell you’re lover here that he needs to speed the bloody hell up, PLEASE.” Roger begged, earning a scoff from Brian behind him. You looked to Freddie and John in the booth, who seemed like they’d just about had it.

“How long have you guys been working?” you asked, handing out the coffees.

“Too long.” John groaned. You came in and handed him his coffee. He offered an exhausted smile, relieved. You finished handing out the drinks.

“How bout you take a break for the day. You’ve been here way too long.” you offered. They all reluctantly agreed, knowing a break would do them some good. Brian gave you a kiss on the temple and settled on the couch. You sat next to him and leaned your head on his shoulders. The others ended up around the couch too, stretching and taking a deep breath as they settled in.

You weren’t exactly sure how many hours had gone by, but suddenly you were all on top of one another giggling about stories from the past.

“Do you remember when John got so hammered that he forgot what band he was in?” Roger snickered. You all laughed so hard at that memory.

“This band is great, who is it?” Freddie chimed in, doing an impression of Deacon. Brian chuckled lightly. John was very quiet.

“Do you remember when Roger locked himself in a cupboard because he couldn’t come to terms with his car kink?” John said evenly, raising his brows slightly. He had an unreadable look on his face. You all laughed even harder. Now it was Roger’s turn to retort.

“That song was good, and you know it! The producer wanted it!”

“The producer was a twat, and you know it.” Brian interrupted. Roger laughed at that.

“You’re right, he was.”

The rest of the night was spent giggling and bonding with everyone, swapping stories from touring days, uni, and everything else. The boys had accepted you as one of their own, and loved hearing your takes to their music.

“You’re awfully quiet tonight. Is everything okay?” John interrupts your thoughts. You look over at him and give him a reassuring look.

“Oh, I’m fine. Just…. feeling nostalgic, I suppose. All these spaces just bring back so many memories.”

“Brian really loves you, (y/n).” he casts a glance over to you. You meet his gaze, offering light smile.

“He does, doesn’t he…”

“Mm. When he told me about this, I was so happy to be apart of it. Personally, I wouldn’t have thought about doing something like this, but he really goes the extra mile for you- and he should! You’re a wonderful person, (y/n).”

“Thanks, Deacy. It means a lot.” You place a hand on his shoulder, and he grins at you.

A few more moments pass, and he pulls into a parking space.

“We’re here. I’ve technically done my job, but I can walk you in if you’d like?”

You give him another hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“I can go from here. Thank you so much for driving me.”

“It’s not a problem. I hope you’re having fun.” he gets out and goes around to open your door.

“I am, definitely.”

“I’m glad, love.” he smiles and waits until you make it to the studio before driving off.

You step into the recording room and smile.

“Ah! There you are, darling!” Freddie calls from the couch in the booth. He runs out and gives you a hug, nearly picking you up as he does.

“Freddie! Hello!” you laugh. He places a kiss on both cheeks. You returned the favor.

“I was worried for a moment you weren’t coming. Here, I have a few things for you. More than just the envelope and roses.”

“That so?” you smirk and cross your arms.

“Now, don’t move!” Freddie instructed you gave a mocking “yes sir” to him. He stuck out his tongue. He goes back into the booth and returns with two boxes.

“For you, lovie. It has nothing to do with this scavenger, but we all chipped in.

“You all spoil me, I swear.”

“Oh think nothing of it!” Freddie laughs. “Now open it!”

You open the first box to reveal a photo album. It’s filled with Polaroids of you and the band goofing off. There are photos Brian took the first day you met of you by the counter, photos you took of the band backstage before a show, all of you at different parties, ridge farm, and some shots of all the boys that were taken by you or John.

“Oh, God I’m gonna cry!” Your voice is quivering lightly, but your smile grows brighter. It was such a thoughtful gift.

“Oh don’t cry, darling! Not yet at least. There’s one more thing! This one is just from Brian, though.”

You open the smaller box to find a small silver locket on braided chain. You let out an audible gasp as you gingerly take it out of the box.

“Oh my goodness…. it’s beautiful.” You turn it on your hand admiring it. You open up the clasp to find photos of you and Brian from the park when he first confessed to you. Tears prick your eyes, but don’t fall. You give Freddie a big bear hug that nearly knocks him over. He laughs and hugs you back.

“There, now, I still need to give you the final rose and envelope.”

“Oh, heh, right.” You get off him and he hands you the last rose- a blue one.

“I’ll read you the last letter while you put on the necklace.” You nod and he begins reading.

“(Y/n)

So you found the final rose of three.

Now you get to come home to me.

Your current adventure is nearly done,

However, now a new one’s begun.

Your trust so far in this endeavor’s been blind

But it will take a literal sense you’ll find.

Worry not, because I’ll say,

Once home, I��m with you all the way.

“Oh thank goodness…” You laugh. You adjust the chain around your neck.

“Shall we get going soon, lovie?”

“Definitely.”

You bring around a taxi and head back home.

When you return, Brian is outside on the yard. You run up to him and kiss him roughly. You nearly crush the roses in the process.

“I missed you today, darling.” he says against your lips.

“I missed you too. What was with that quest you sent me on?” you ask as you part. He tsks and chuckles.

“No more questions, love. All will be answered soon. Now, remember in the letter how your trust will literally be blind?”

“Yeah?”

“I need you to put this on while I put down your things, okay?” he hands you a dark piece of fabric to tie around your head.

“Brian May, what are you-“

“Now, now I just said no questions, love. I’ll be back in a few.” He places a gently kiss on your temple and walks inside. You huff but obey and put on the blindfold. He comes back a minute later.

“Can you see anything?”

“Not at all.”

“Perfect. I’m going to lead you to the last location, okay?” you feel his hand come to your elbow. He intertwines your arms, and you cling to him.

“Off we go then.”

He leads you down the street for a while before turning off into a trail. The leaves and sand crunch under your feet and a light breeze flows past you.

“Not too much longer, now, love.” he whispers sweetly, stepping down. You mimic this movement down a hill, further into what you could only assume to be the woods.

There is the sound of water moving by you. Perhaps a creek or a lake.

“Brian, where are you taking me?” You laugh

“We’re almost there…”

After a little more walking he stops and says, “We’re here.”

You take off your blindfold to see the sight in front of you. You’re in a meadow past the woods. There is an old, forgotten gazebo that’s been lit with candles beside a lake, the sky is clear and you could see virtually every star. Roger, John and Freddie are there, placing down a dinner. A soft melody is playing on top of the sound of the water pushing against the shore and the wind rustling the trees.

“Brian, this is beautiful… when did you…” you trail off. Brian sets both hands on your shoulders behind you.

“I found this place when I went for a walk. No one comes here as far as I know. No one but us.”

You look at him with wonder.

You sit down to eat, and the rest of Queen say their goodbyes to you and leave you with your love.

“Well, no use standing here when we have dinner waiting for us. Shall we, then?” Brian takes your hand and leads you to the gazebo. As you move closer, you see garden salads the boys had set down as well as potatoes, fruit, and several other dishes. There is a basket of white roses as a centerpiece. Brian pulls out the chair for you and pushes you in. You both enjoy a pleasant conversation detailing your days, and you talk about the scavenger hunt you just went on.

“How is everything tasting, by the way? Mary came over and had a hand in helping me prepare.” Brian confesses.

“It’s amazing. It all tastes so good! How did you set this all up?”

“Well, the boys definitely had a hand in helping me out. The scavenger hunt was my idea. John helped me write the passages, and I’m glad he and Roger could give rides. I see you’re wearing the necklace. Do you like it?”

“Oh, Brian, I love it!” you take his hand and squeeze it. He lifts yours up and brushes his lips against your knuckles.

“I wanted something for when I’m off on tour and can’t see you. This way, I’ll still be close to your heart.” he says lovingly.

As you finish eating, you step off and sit on the steps of the gazebo and look at the stars. A small chill runs through your body and you huddle closer to Brian. He sets his arm over you and holds you close, pointing out constellations in the sky.

“If you look up this way, you can see Scorpius. And if you follow this trail of stars all the way over here, you’ll run into Norma and Ara.” He speaks in a hushed tone. You lean your head into him and sigh contently. You could listen to him speak about the cosmos for ages.

“They’re like diamonds, aren’t they?” He says, still looking at the sky. His grip on your shoulder tightens slightly. You look up at him and give a soft “mhm”

“But none are as beautiful as you, (y/n).”

“Brian, what are you-“ you smile at him. He gets up and sits in front of you.

“There are billions and billions of stars, but none are as beautiful as you. You are the one that came to Earth and outshone us all, even our own bloody solar system’s sun.” He pauses and pulls out a black, velvet box from his pocket. You gasp and cover your mouth. He opens it to reveal a diamond ring with a helix band. Tears are already flooding down your face. He just gives you the most blinding, heartfelt smile he’s ever given.

“(Y/n) (l/n), You are a rarity of a person. I have been so honored to call you my friend and now my love. I have one question for you now, darling. Will you marry me?” You nod vigorously, unable to do anything else but cry and smile. He motions for you to say something and you manage to choke out a yes. His grin reaches his ears as he takes the ring out and places it on your finger. You can’t help yourself and tackle him to the ground, peppering him in a million kisses. He holds you close and you lay down on him.

“So THIS is why you’ve been acting so weird this past week.”

“Generally, yes.” Brian chuckles.

“I love you, Brian.”

“SAY THATAGAIN!” Eridan shrieked, “SAY THAT AGAIN YOU MOLDERIN PIECE A SHIT! THEY’LLFIND YOUR REMAINS ON 4 DIFFERENT CONTINENTS!” The target of his ire, a trollthat was suddenly not looking too confident in himself, backed away quickly. Eridanlunged forward but a hand caught the back of his shirt and yanked him back. Twoarms circled his waist in a tight grip.

“Eri,” Roxy’svoice, gentle but firm, chided at him. Eridan seethed and gripped the wristsholding him back, but his claws didn’t touch her skin.

“He’s askinfor it, Rox. He’s beggin for it!”

“I know, buthe ain’t gettin it.” She pressed her cheek to his back and hummed softly. Hegave a low, drawn-out whine in response. Roxy nuzzled his shirt.

“C’mon, c’mon.We’re meetin the others for ice cream, remember?” She hugged him gently and felthis muscles relax. “Ain’t worth missin it by gettin all worked up over here.”

“I could justpunch’m,” Eridan grumbled, but his voice was softer now, “Real quick. Knock himflat.”

“Aw Eri, I know you could. But you don’t gotta.”

“But I wanna.”

“Yeah I know.I know. But c’mon. It ain’t worth it.” Roxy squeezed him again, and Eridan madea short huff of frustrated resignation.

The troll thathad been cowering several yards away hazarded a peek out between his arms.Seeing Eridan having simmered down, his face broke into a sneer.

“The ditzymonkey’s got you on a tight leash, huh sandsucker?” Roxy’s mouth went tight andher eyes narrowed, then she raised her hands up.

“Oops.”

Eridan lungedforward. The troll screamed. They were late for ice cream.

Tell me: EriDirk

Eridan made anervous noise in the back of his throat as he swiveled around in front of themirror. His hair was styled just a little more freely than usual, which matchedthe fluttering fabric of his lilac blouse. A black pencil skirt hugged aroundhis waist with white leggings and a pair of Mary Janes.

Did it lookgood? Maybe it looked good. But would hethink it looked good? Eridan fiddled with his amethyst earrings and took a deepbreath. Maybe a lighter skirt? Darker leggings?

The doorbellrang and he jumped, then spun around to look at the clock. There was no way itwas that time already!

He resistedbiting down on his lip and ruining his makeup as he headed downstairs. Hesucked in a breath of air, then turned the knob and opened the door.

Dirk greetedhim with a bundle of roses shoved under his nose. Eridan blinked and jerkedback, then laughed and accepted them.

“I think theflorist has gotten used to me asking for orange and violet roses. He didn’teven try to argue with me on the clashing colors this time.”

“He’s finallyresigned to it, huh?” Eridan smiled down at the flowers, then his smilevanished and he lowered them to stare at his feet. “Uh-” He could feel his faceheating up and butterflies swarming in his stomach. “So, uh, how do I look?”

Dirk wassilent, and Eridan felt his stomach drop into his feet. He swallowed, mouthsuddenly dry.

“I-I’m notsure the blouse goes with the skirt,” Eridan started to babble, “I was thinkinmaybe a lighter color, or change the leggins, and I might just entirely redo mymakeup-”

“Eridan.”

Eridan’s mouthshut. Dirk coughed, then fixed his glasses.

“You look-” Hestarted, “…nice. Really nice.” Dirk shifted, then reached out and, a littleawkwardly, brushed Eridan’s cheek with the tips of his fingers.

“You lookamazing,” Dirk repeated softly. Eridan felt a tingling warmth rush over him andhe ducked his head, hoping his makeup covered the worst of the blush. Dirkstepped forward and lay his hand against the nape of his neck, pulling himcloser to kiss the corner of his mouth. Eridan muttered something about his lipstick,so Dirk kissed him on the forehead instead. Eridan purred and leaned in tonestle his head against his neck.

“You’readorable,” Dirk remarked. Eridan snorted.

“I’m majestic.”

“Majesticallyadorable.”

The fish is so cute with his quadmates.

Merits

fandom: doctrine of labyrinths pairs: felix/gideon ao3 version here. my other yuletide 2016 assignment, for harukami! they wanted a good time with felix and gideon, and this was the first thing to come to mind!

"You know, I've just realized," she began, "that for how long we've been co-conspirators, I don't think I know any of your birthdays."

I am still unsure as whose suggestion it was. Mehitabel, I suspect; while he had made a great deal of progress, Mildmay still did not seem of a mind to use such non-vital information, and though it may be true that Felix cared for me, in the time that I'd known him, he has always been remarkably bad at looking outside himself. That left Mehitabel, the only other person in Melusine I could truly call a friend, in whatever capacity that entailed. No doubt, the only other person who might care.

Contrary to the suggestion itself, I knew precisely where the idea came from. It had been a rare, peaceful moment in Felix's rooms; Felix was sat to one of the sides of the room reading, while Mildmay and I sat playing cards. Mehitabel had stopped by for a few moments to see Mildmay and tell us of her company's newest production (and was using the visit as an excuse to complain of how ill-suited one of the players was to her role) when there was a tap at the door. There was a moment of silence as we occupants looked around at each other; after another tap, Mildmay pushed himself to his feet. He limped over to the door to find a courier, a boy of no older than fifteen, whose eyes grew wide and a little bit frightened upon seeing him there.

"Letter f-for Mildmay Foxe, sir," he stammered, holding out a small envelope.

Mildmay seemed visibly taken aback by this, muttering out a quiet "thanks" before digging a few coins out of his pocket to tip the boy and, as soon as he was gone and the door shut, handing the letter off to Mehitabel. I saw Felix's brows raise, surprised and perhaps a little offended that he hadn't been chosen to receive the letter instead.

:Felix,: was all I needed to say; he glanced back at me, no doubt remembering one of the many conversations we'd had about allowing Mildmay his own time. Felix's cheeks colored, and he opened his book, furiously pretending to read.

I hadn't noticed that Mehitabel had already opened the envelope and was glancing through its contents. "Well," she said, and her surprise was evident in that one word. "It seems we've been invited to a birthday party, for one Simon Barrister. The invitation is specifically addressed to Mildmay, but we're welcome to attend as well. As thanks for saving his and Rinaldo's lives, I expect," she finished, and between Felix and Mildmay, I couldn't tell whose eyes were bigger once she'd finished speaking.

"Simon is having a party?" Felix asked at the same time Mildmay blurted out, "Why d'they want me?"

"I imagine," Mehitabel drawled, "they credit you with their escape, Mildmay. Despite it being a group effort to leave the Bastion itself," she teased. "If it weren't for us, they might not be here to celebrate. That makes it all the more worth it to do, don't you think?" Felix seemed properly cowed at this; I tried not to smile. And after a pause, she asked, "Do you want to go, Mildmay?"

It took him far too long for him to answer, made far too obvious the trouble he was having with the idea. "Dunno," he muttered, eyes casting to the ground and quickly sitting back down. I suppose I couldn't blame him; to call that period in his life troubled was doing it no justice, and it was not nearly as far behind us as he most likely wished. I could understand how he might have difficulties.

Perhaps sensing how uncomfortable he was, Mehitabel looked way, busying herself with folding the letter and slipping it back into its envelope, precise and pristine. "Well, we've until the weekend to decide. It's no rush, so take your time in deciding what you want to do."

And then she paused, an odd quirk to her mouth. "You know, I've just realized," she began, "that for how long we've been co-conspirators, I don't think I know any of your birthdays." She drew herself up, casting her eyes about the room at us. Ah,, I thought. This must be what Mildmay calls her 'teacher voice.' Indeed, there was a sort of authority to her voice as Mehitabel made sure to lock eyes with each of us, so that we understood she would not accept anything less than a date. "Mine is 21 Prairial; what about you lot?"

Felix was the first to speak up. "Mine is Eré 30. That's.. 30 Vendémiaire by city reckoning, I believe."

Mehitabel nodded. "Somehow, that doesn't surprise me at all." WIthout missing a beat, and without waiting to answer the puzzled look on Felix's face, she turned to Mildmay. "What about you, Sunshine?"

He frowned, squirming under her gaze. "...think it's 21 Thermidor?" he muttered.

"You think?" Mehitabel and Felix said at the same time, both bewildered. I couldn't help the frown that crossed my face. Mildmay made no secret of his checkered past; that this should be the thing to offend them was odd to me. Given how close they'd all become, it wasn't a reaction I'd expected from them.

Neither did Mildmay, it appeared. He shrank back, the line of his shoulders defensive. "Wasn't no one to celebrate it or care," I was barely able to grasp as he mumbled, the "So why should I?" hanging unsaid in the air.

Seeing that she'd made his discomfort worse, Mehitabel skilfully shifted the room's attention to me. It was sweet, how much she cared. From time to time, I felt myself wondering if Mildmay ever noticed it. I thought about the answer she sought for a moment, before fetching something with which to write her an answer.

"4 Pluviôse?" She read aloud, her brows drawing up nearly to her hairline. "Gideon, that's in a week! Why didn't you say anything?"

I quirked my eyebrows at her; the color in her cheeks darkened a touch as she added, "Oh, you know what I mean." I shrugged, and then paused to think. I'd told Felix and Mildmay of my faith, of the White-Eyed Lady and her courtship with death, but Mehitabel had no idea, and I didn't know what her feelings on the Lady were. I was more than used to watching the day come and go, and the fact no one else knew the date had meant I was safe from prying questions. Questions a bit like this.

I wasn't sure what to say.

"Gideon?" Felix nudged at my silence, frowning curiously in my direction.

All I could do was offer him a small shrug. :Why should I celebrate the date of my birth, when I wait for the day I return to my Lady?:

He gave a quiet "ah," as though he understood, but I could see my words troubled him; seeing the curious looks on Mildmay and Mehitabel's faces, he nodded in my direction. "As I understand it, his..culture lends no weight or import to birthdays. He says he doesn't celebrate."

I nodded. It wasn't exactly the truth, but neither was it a lie. While Felix and Mildmay seemed to accept this, Mehitabel looked troubled. I could see that there was something she wished to say; instead, she sighed. "Well, aren't you boys boring? Suppose I won't expect any surprises from you lot when mine rolls around, will I? In the meantime," and she picked herself up, handing Mildmay his letter before donning her coat, "I'm going to snoop around a bit and see if I can find an appropriate gift."

The door clicked shut behind her, and I suppose I should have noticed that she didn't specify for whom she sought said gift.

Simon's birthday party came and passed without much fuss. Mildmay did, in the end, decide to attend, if only for an hour or so; Mehitabel and Felix stayed longer to cover for his escape, and Mildmay and I enjoyed the silence of the suite for however long we were able. After a while, however, I noticed him watching me. True to his name, his observation of me was near imperceptible, and it took me far too long to realize he was paying attention to more than just the cards I was playing. Once I was sure of it, I set down my hand and tilted my head at him.

He seemed to know immediately what I was trying to ask. "Powers. Sorry, Gideon." He sighed deeply. "Mehitabel keeps askin' about you. For your birthday. Told her I ain't got a clue what you'd want, so she wanted me to find out." And then, because it seemed to amuse him that he'd already revealed as much, he added, "Wasn't supposed to tell you that, neither, but you're smart enough to get it anyway."

I offered him a smile, and while I knew he wouldn't return the expression, the caution in his posture seemed to evaporate for it. We picked up our cards and resumed our game, but from then on I was distracted. I'd thought Felix's excuse that I did not quite celebrate would settle the matter; apparently, Mehitabel hadn't quite accepted it. While I appreciated the gesture, there was only one thing I truly wanted, and it had been ripped from me, cast aside somewhere to rot. I would not get it back, no matter how badly I wished I could.

"Gideon?" Mildmay was frowning at me. I tilted my head to show that I'd heard him, bid him to continue. "Somethin' wrong?"

With a start, I realized that my hand had come to rest on my cheek, pressing lightly into the flesh and against my teeth. I took my hand away quickly, shaking my head. There was nothing anyone could do about it now. I did not need to dwell on it. I could see that he didn't believe me, but he dropped it anyway. We spent the rest of the evening in relative silence, and when we separated to retreat to our respective bedrooms, I touched his hand, nodding my head in a quiet thanks. He shrugged, and that was the last I heard of it.

For a little while, at least.

When I woke on the morning of 4 Pluvôise, it was to a strange tension in my shoulders and an unfortunately short temper. I suppose it was the memory of that conversation with Mildmay that frayed my nerves a bit; I wasn't sure what to expect, and the idea of expecting something only to have nothing happen did not lend itself too kindly to my mood. Felix and Mildmay were gone for court, and so at least I had a blessedly quiet morning; by the time they returned, my temper had simmered down a few degrees. As soon as I saw them, however, my anxious anticipation surged back. Felix finally noticed that I was sitting at the table as they were hanging their coats.

"Ah, good, you're awake," he said, pulling off his scarf. There was something off about his mannerisms, the look on his face. Like he was confused, trying to work through an incredibly complicated mental math problem. It was only compounded by the way he held out a hand to hang his scarf on top of his coat, only to miss the hook entirely; I managed to see Mildmay roll his eyes before grabbing it before it could hit the floor, and perhaps that helped soothe my mood a little.

:Yes, Felix. That tends to happen after one has a full night's rest.: He frowned at me, and I sighed, waved it away. It wouldn't do to take out my baseless frustrations on him. :How was court?:

:Utterly pointless, as usual. I swear, one of these days we will discuss something actually useful, and half the court will miss it because we are so used to banality.:

He offered me a small, worried smile before absently taking one of my leftover pieces of toast, a cold thing, and rock hard. It made it all the way to his mouth before he realized what he was doing and set it back down to instead fidget with his rings. It was almost endearing to see him so nervous, even if I wasn't completely positive as to why.

We spent a few good minutes like that before he sat up suddenly, a determined look on his face. Almost as though he'd made up his mind about something, and though I was fairly certain as to what it was, I waited for him to speak. :Gideon, what are your plans for this evening?:

I raised my eyebrows at him. :Well, I almost always have a fully booked planner, as you know. I may be available tonight, though, I'll need to check.: It was a silly question, but in all honesty, it was a comfort as well. At least I knew I hadn't woken up anxious for no reason. :You know I'm free, Felix,: I said, a bit kinder this time. :What do you need?:

Felix rolled his eyes, shifting to drum his fingers against the tabletop, idly conjuring a small witchlight to dance along his knuckles. :Well, I thought perhaps I might set the Mirador on fire to see what reaction I might instead receive.: And then he winced, as though realizing that, despite its being at his own expense, the joke was in rather poor taste. :I thought,: and he paused, obviously weighing his words. :It has come to my attention that I am..perhaps not the most attentive of persons.:

Tactfully, I said nothing. It was true, after all, and I knew I had Mehitabel to thank for this realization. His cheeks colored, but seeing that I wouldn't interrupt, he decided to press on.

:So, despite birthdays not bearing any importance for those who worship Nera, I thought I might take you out for an evening. Dinner and a play? Mehitabel assures me that her company's rival does an absolutely atrocious Three Faces of Cosette. I thought we might have a nice dinner, and then laugh at what is purportedly a hilariously terrible rendition of a great dramatical tragedy.:

The words spilled out of him almost rapidfire, as though he was nervous about the proposition, and if I had been anyone else, I might have said yes immediately. It was, after all, a lovely idea for a birthday celebration. I was not, however, anyone else; it was a fact that the other wizards in the Mirador liked to snicker about whenever I would go out with Felix. Considering the mood I'd woken up in, I wasn't certain I wanted to put up with such naked passive aggression today, especially if Felix and Mehitabel wanted to make a thing of it.

:As wonderful as that sounds, Felix…: His face dropped as soon as I began to speak. I hadn't expected him to be so enthusiastic about this, given his nervousness in asking and the way he'd accepted that I wasn't really one to celebrate. I sighed, leaned forward to touch his hand, so that I might continue. :As wonderful as that sounds, I think a night spent in with you would be much better.:

I did not miss the sharp intake of breath as he looked up at me, eyes wide and, just for a few seconds, innocently shocked. Perhaps it was mean of me, but I laughed, just a little, taking his hand to kiss his oddly uneven knuckles. :How does that sound to you?:

Felix watched me for a second, probably to see if I would withdraw my suggestion. Then, quietly, :Are you sure? What about dinner?:

:Do people not eat dinner if it isn't at someone else's expense?: I asked idly, and received a laugh for the effort. Good. I smiled warmly at him. :We can always eat here, send for someone to bring up food instead. And if you truly insist on making an event of it, we can invite Mehitabel and Mildmay to join us.:

Felix chuckled, squeezing my fingers. :This whole thing was her idea, you know. It is surprisingly difficult to plan an evening for someone you care a great deal about. I'm absolutely terrible at it.: As if not realizing what he'd said, he stood, twisting our hands so that he could kiss mine this time, instead. :I'll see about making preparations and having dinner sent up to us. Perhaps I can work something out to make it truly special...:

He trailed off, and I watched him wander over to Mildmay's door, knocking quickly to retrieve his brother. I wasn't sure why the both of them were necessary for whatever errands Felix was running; he simply had to ask for some food, didn't he? Still, if it made him feel better, I would let him continue. It was a compromise, something I was learning to get used to in our relationship.

They had been gone a few minutes before I realized with a start — my bad mood had completely disappeared, leaving a light warmth in its place. I smiled, and pulled a new book from Felix's shelves.

The brothers were gone most of the day, and oddly enough, I found myself remarkably bored in their absence. I read through two books, shuffled through the stockpiled bits of parchment that I was saving to write on, whenever the need arose, and rearranged what meager belongings I had stored in Felix's closets. By the time they returned, I was near to stir-crazy and so relieved to see them I nearly jumped out of my seat. I was lucky enough to stop myself, instead looking up from my book and nodding in greeting.

Felix didn't make it past the entryway before he was frowning, looking quickly around the room and apparently finding it not up to his tastes. "We'll need to clean up," he muttered, and began to collect the books he'd been stockpiling by his chair. Mildmay and I watched him for a few minutes, until he realized we were not helping and said, "Well? I am not cleaning all of this mess alone."

I couldn't help a laugh at that, and if I didn't know any better, I'd almost guess that Mildmay had chuckled. I couldn't be sure, and of course there was no sign of it in the next second. Still, we both stood to assist, and after an hour or so we managed to get the sitting room presentable. Afterward, and despite the fact we were staying in, Felix insisted we change into nicer outfits. It seemed silly, and I could tell Mildmay thought so as well; still, in the interest of not spoiling the good mood that was starting to pervade the room, we shuffled back into our rooms to change into finer things.

It was perfect timing, apparently; by the time I exited the room, Mehitabel was standing in the middle of the sitting room, her hair gracefully pinned up and wearing a lovely wine red dress, with a wrapped package in her hands. I frowned, wondering if she was on the way somewhere, before realizing. I froze, my breath caught in my lungs, some mix of surprise and fondness. She turned, and as soon as she saw me, smiled. She crossed the room, walking over to me, and kissed my cheek.

"You can open your gifts after dinner."

It almost seemed as though it was planned; as soon as she finished speaking, before I had time to realize what she meant by gifts, there was a rap at the door. Mildmay, now dressed in smart trousers and a newly-pressed shirt, opened the door, and in swarmed a host of waitstaff. They laid out a veritable feast, certainly too much for four people to eat alone. Still, as I looked over the plates they brought, I noticed a good number of Kekropian dishes, things I hadn't eaten in years and hadn't realized I missed eating until this very moment. Unkindly, I wondered just how much it had cost Felix to bribe someone to cook them, then shook my head to clear away such a hideous thought. Instead, I swept over to him, kissing his cheek. He looked at me with wide eyes, feigning innocence and more than obvious for it.

:Why, Gideon. Whatever was that for?: He teased, adding, :Not that I'm complaining, of course.:

:Of course not,: I laughed, sliding my hand into his. :I don't suppose you left any food for the rest of the Mirador, did you?:

He flapped a hand dismissively. :So Stephen will have one roast chicken for dinner, rather than his customary two. He'll survive.:

We shared a moment of laughter, before Mehitabel cleared her throat and reminded us that we were not the only ones in the room. "You two wanna share with the class, or can we start eating?"

Felix rolled his eyes, though I could tell that his mood hadn't actually soured. "Very well, I suppose," he drawled, and we all sat down. Before we could eat, however, he raised his glass, looking shyly over at me. "To Gideon," he toasted, a small smile on his face. "For being kind enough to tolerate my whims."

Mehitabel laughed, and I swear I could see Mildmay shrug in agreement. Felix colored slightly, my own cheeks burning hot, but they raised their glasses to toast, and the evening only got better from there.

We ate until we could barely move, and despite being an attempt by Melusinian chefs, the Kekropian dishes were passable. Mildmay, in particular, seemed to enjoy them more than Mehitabel and Felix; between the two of us, we managed to polish off at least half of each plate, as Felix and Mehitabel made snide, harmless comments about how we had no tastebuds.

It was surprisingly fun, and I found myself laughing more than I had in the last year, a feat I hadn't imagined possible. Once we were done eating, the three of them gave me gifts: a new book from Mildmay, who assured me his "cadeskiff friend" recommended it with the highest praise. Mehitabel presented me with a beautiful scarf, deep emerald with gold trim. And from Felix, a wax tablet replete with stylus. "So that you don't have to keep scraps of paper in your pockets," he explained. It was, truly, one of the most thoughtful things I had ever received, and I realized with a jolt that it may be the closest I might ever get to being able to speak again. I clutched it to my chest, before writing thank you, and Mehitabel clapped when she saw it.

After dinner, a few of Mehitabel's acting troupe members came in and performed an abbreviated version of The Tragedy of Saints, a play I'd mentioned wanting to see before the events in Aiaia. It was excessively, certainly, but so wholly surprising and enjoyable that I forgave Felix and Mehitabel for planning it out. The actors she'd joined up with were very talented, and despite its pared down state, I was just as enthralled with their performance as I might have been with a full set and cast.

It was a lovely evening. Once we were done, Felix called for the waitstaff to clear the dishes; Mehitabel's troupe stayed to have some wine with us, and we spent the rest of the time chatting and generally enjoying each others' companies. I had not ever expected this, and when things finally drew to a close, I found it a little bittersweet, wondering if most birthdays were quite so wonderful. I knew it couldn't be possible, but still — if it were, I don't think I might have minded it every so often.

I kissed Felix's cheek as we readied for bed, thanking him quietly. He offered me a smile, and we fell asleep curled together, comfortable and peaceful.

Perhaps there was some merit to celebrating one's birthday, after all.
