I feel this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I really do think that before the Ainulindalë, at least, Melkor was Eru's favourite. "To Melkor among the Ainur had been given the greatest gifts of power and knowledge, and he had a share in all the gifts of his brethren." -- he, not Manwë, was meant to be the Elder King. Before the Music, he had free rein to go into the Void, and even after the Music, Eru still let him enter Eä. That strikes me as a great indulgence on his part.

given that Morgoth really hates the peredhel, Elrond and Elros are probably specifically targeted by all the various nasties in Beleriand. therefore, please join me in considering: when Eärendil becomes a star and there's no hope of ransoming the twins for the Silmaril anymore, Maedhros and Maglor decide that the twins are both too much at risk and too much of a risk to send to Gil-galad, but the Fëanorians are already a small force, they can't lose any more people to these raids…

so they fake the twins' deaths.
