Dear @aidenschmaiden (not expecting him to see this lol I just want to get my feelings and opinions about his books out)
It was my birthday a few days ago and I bought the Sunbearer Trials with the money I got. I already had Cemetery Boys and I had high hopes and they were blown out of the water. To say I loved it was an understatement. Im gay, trans, and hispanic and identify with your characters and writing so much. I breezed through the book in 1 day because I just couldnt put it down. I am autistic and have severe social anxiety and find comfort and an escape in books. I have trouble visualizing stuff though but your writing just sucks me right in like Im there as well.
Anyways! If by a one in a million chance you are reading this can you tell me a random fact about Julian or Aurelio possibly?
Edit: I just realized there were so many spelling mistakes in the og post 😭 thats what I get for typing so fast

Straight love stories are like: we saw each other and thought they were hot, we kissed and now we’re in love
Queer love stories are like: “He is half of my soul as the poets say”, “I would've loved you if we had more time”, “He was a boy made of fire who'd been turned to frost. He was meant to burn”, “all the people are fake. Theyre made out of metal. But I like you… and that is not fake”, “Ismail Shah, did he forget the color of Isfahan's sky?”

so i just finished reading Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas and holy shit. i'm in tears. this book literally owns my whole heart.
apart from the incredible trans and queer rep, beautifully written characters, and perfectly detailed storyline, this book is just. amazing. i love it so much.
yadriel's character is written with so much depth and it's just so realistically perfect. i want to write an entire essay about how well written all of the characters are and how much i love julian and maritza but im too lazy

21. How am I ever going to emotionally financially recover from Julian Diaz this?
22. "And I will show them NO MERCY"

He said softly, in the most agonisingly beautiful columbian accent Yadriel had ever heard. It was pure and melodic, like a song.

I just finished Cemetery Boys and really enjoyed it. That's not what this post is about though. If you've read it, I demand you listen to Hostage by Billie Eilish immediately and tell me if you agree that it could have been written FOR Yadriel and Julian!

2.42 Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
SPOILERS
Pages: 320
Overall Rating: ★★★☆☆ Storyline: ★★★☆☆ Dialogue: ★★★☆☆ Characters: ★★★★☆
Genre: YA Fiction
TWs for the book: Ghosts, cemeteries, death and discussion of death, blood, transphobia, dysphoria, grief, homelessness
POV: Third person; Yadriel’s perspective/Julian’s perspective for one chapter
Time Period/Location: East Los Angeles, California
First Line: Yadriel wasn’t technically trespassing because he’d lived in the cemetery his whole life.
Cemetery Boys starts out with a trans boy, Yadriel, and his best friend, Maritza, sneaking through a cemetery and into their church. Except it isn’t an ordinary church, and they’re not ordinary kids. They’re brujx, a Latinx group of people who serve Lady Death and possess magic. Brujas possess the power to heal people with rosaries and brujos can release and summon spirits with daggers (the rosaries and daggers are called portajes). All of them can sense spirits and injuries, and the death of a brujx. Yadriel was not allowed to perform his quinces ceremony that would make him an official brujo with a portaje because he is trans, so him and Maritza perform the ceremony themselves in the church, and Lady Death accepts him as a brujo (not a bruja). Immediately afterwards, they feel the death of their cousin Miguel. When they return to Yadriel’s house, he is shunned by his father and refused to allow to help in the search for Miguel. So him and Maritza sneak out to go search the cemetery and the old church. They find a Saint Jude medal, which they realize is a tether for a spirit, and, thinking it’s Miguel, they summon the spirit attached. It’s actually an angry, attractive teenage boy named Julian who is attached to the medal, and when Yadriel tried to release him from this world against his will, it doesn’t work. So they cut a deal, Yadriel will help Julian find his friends to make sure they’re ok, and then Julian would allow Yadriel to release his spirit. They then have to hunt down Julian’s friends (all of whom are homeless or outcasts), and meet with his brother Rio in an attempt to figure out what happened to him. After meeting with Julian’s brother, they are attacked by a maligno spirit upon return to the cemetery. Yadriel’s dad sees him try to release the spirit with his portaje, and afterwards apologizes and accepts him as a son, telling him that he will get to be in the ceremony as a brujo this Die de Muertos. No one knows, and Julian begins to show signs of going maligno (turning into an evil zombie) so Yadriel gives him one last day on Earth before he has to release him. During this time, they had fallen in love, and Yadriel has a hard time accepting the fact that he needs to be released. They return to the old church where they found him, and Yadriel tries to free him one last time, but it again, doesn’t work, and Julian disappears under the church. Yadriel and Maritza run down and find an underground chamber. They also find Miguel’s body and two others, and Julian’s body, except he was alive and slowly bleeding out with a sacred dagger in his chest. It turns out Yadriel’s Tio Catriz was sacrificing people to bring back the Jaguar God Bahlam and gain magic for himself, as he was fairly powerless. Yadriel pushed his Tio into the portal he had opened and he was consumed by Bahlam. Julian, however, still died, so Yadriel made a deal with Lady Death to bring Julian, Miguel, and the other two people back at the cost of his own life. However, Maritza, using the pools of blood on the floor, also heals Yadriel and brings him back to life. Miguel goes and gets help, and Julian and Yadriel have a tearful reunion in the hospital (full of kisses, finally). At the end, Yadriel gets to see his mother again due to it being Dia de Muertos, and she and the whole community get to see him become a brujo.
Yadriel: Yadriel is some of the best trans representation I have seen so far in a book. The way his dysphoria and interactions with his family are portrayed are really accurate to how it is for some people. The writing when it comes to him was a little obvious, or a little too... fanfiction-y I suppose? I was more expecting there to be a story with a trans character instead of it being a story about a character and his trans-ness. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but for me personally the writing for Yadriel came off as for a bit of a younger audience. I really admired his utter dedication to his culture despite them not being accepting of him. I did really like how we were never given his deadname, that even when it was said by other characters it was never told to us, the audience. Also, the fact that at the end, when Maritza brought him back to life, he wasn’t forced to lose his powers. I was really expecting for the price of Julian, Miguel, and the other two’s life to be his powers, but it wasn’t. The story kept the dramatic realism without stripping the AFAB characters of their bodily autonomy.
Julian: Julian was an excellent love interest for Yadriel. They were incredibly opposite, Yadriel being quiet and careful, Julian being loud and reckless. They balanced each other out very nicely. Also, you just gotta love half feral gay boys. There was a tad bit of overdramatic-ness that came with Julian’s character, however, I think that that had to do with the nature of the writing being for a younger audience.
Maritza: Maritza was the much needed comedic relief. She was really funny and overall I love how no matter what, even in a time of danger, she did not sway from her decision to not practice magic with animal blood. Her veganism wasn’t her only defining trait, but it was nice to see a female character have a moral choice for herself and stick to it no matter what, and not be circumstantially forced into doing something she was uncomfortable with. She also was a good middle ground between Julian’s recklessness and Yadriel’s timidness.
Tio Catriz: The plot twist I honestly did not see coming was Tio Catriz trying to resurrect Bahlam via Miguel and Julian. He made for a wicked villain in the end, the utter betrayal of Yadriel by the only “accepting” person in his family since his mother died, was heartbreaking and shocking. It was a solid motivation though, his lack of power and the outcasting of him in the community because of it drove him to do such evil things. Yadriel and Catriz I feel like are really good  foils for each other. They were both outcasts but Yadriel did whatever he could to be accepted, while Catriz was driven to evil.
Storyline: The storyline was a little slow, and it seemed to take awhile to get to the interesting bits, but the plot twist at the end was very good. I wanted to see more of Julian’s friends and brother, and more of Yadriel’s community outside of just his family members and the ghosts. The concept was really cool though and the complete cast of Latinx characters was awesome.
Representation: There is hardly a white person to be found. All the characters are Latinx of some kind (Mexican, Cuban, Colombian, Puerto Rican, etc.) Yadriel is gay and trans FtM. Julian is gay. Maritza is vegan. Julian’s friend Flaca is trans MtF. I believe it’s stated that everyone in Julian’s friend group is LGBTQ+ of some kind.
Summary: Overall, it was honestly a good book, it just didn’t hold my attention as well as I thought it would. I would definitely recommend it, especially for the younger people on the young adult reading spectrum. The trans and Latinx rep is great and the plot twist at the end is really surprising. I like how there was drama and suspense without risking any of the characters bodily autonomy or making them bend in their beliefs, and the happy ending where everything worked out just fine was well warranted and refreshing.
Quotes: “Queer folks are like wolves... We travel in packs.”-Julian “You don’t need anyone’s permission to be you, Yads.”-Julian “It is not your fault... Greed and hurt drive people to do horrible things.”-Maritza “Growth isn’t a deviation of what we’ve done before, but a natural progression to honor all those who make this community strong.”-Yadriel’s father “He was a boy made of fire who had been turned to frost. He was meant to burn.”-Yadriel

Headcanons for ADHD characters Masterlist
I was asked for this a while ago and I feel this is a good discussion subject because the canon representation for ADHD is kind of abysmal and is often a caricature or a joke.
usual disclaimer, I'm not a therapist, this is not a diagnosis tool, just for fun, etc etc...basing this on my own experience/knowledge with ADHD and meeting a lot of ADHD people IRL. I'm going off the main symptoms first (inattention and/or hyperactivity, restlessness, impulsivity, problems with emotional/focus regulation, daydreaming, messiness, hyper-focus, fidgeting etc) and then looking at character traits that are not a necessary symptom but often associated (substance abuse and addiction, need to please, sensitivity to rejection, compassionate and creative, thrill seeking, very imaginative, charming and witty or withdrawn and shy or angry and irritable, whimsical and fun and a bit child-like, out of the box thinker, self esteem issues, unstable life, comorbidity with anxiety and depression, very intense feelings, functions better with adrenaline/in an emergency, disregard for rules and problems with authority OR extreme compliance, codependency, perceived as weird, clever in an atypical way, problems in school, extremely good at one specific thing, etc)
Also I found this list with actual canonical representation
BOOKS :
The 'fits to a T so I'm seeing it as my personal canon' list :
note : doesn't mean that the authors actually meant to create representation but it's very likely they at least got inspired by people who did have ADHD (even when the diagnosis itself did not exist) and explained it with 'it's just their personality' OR the story happens in a setting where the label doesn't exist as such. also not meant to be exhaustive.
- Helen Burns (from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë) One of Jane's school friends from the start of the novel, fits the inattentive type to a T : she can't seem to focus or learn her lessons, is constantly daydreaming, describes herself as messy and careless, forgets rules, and is easily distracted. She talks constantly about her own 'defective nature' and seems very sensitive to criticism but incapable of changing. She doesn't defend herself against the nuns' harsh punishments as she thinks she deserves them. She's presented as kind-hearted and compassionate, almost too good for this world, and hyperfocuses on her faith. Apparently sb even wrote an academic article on this. She dies so it's not super fun representation but it is interesting to see in an older book, to push back against the idea that ADHD was invented yesterday by Big Pharma lol.
- Grantaire (from Les Miserables, Victor Hugo) Part of the student revolutionary group Les Amis de l'ABC and resident skeptic, does not believe in the cause but is fixated on the group's idealistic leader (and yeah it sounds very gay, they die holding hands, there is a lot of Symbolism). He spends his time ranting about things that are only vaguely connected, is described as brilliant but incapable of sticking to any one profession or hobby, is an alcoholic, has a creative streak (was a painter at some point), likes wandering around the city, has massive self-esteem issues and is a general mess but does seem to care about his friends. This is not a very flattering portrayal as Grantaire is described as morally deficient but again, interesting in an old book. ADHD!Grantaire is a popular take in the modern fandom (i was in it before I was diagnosed it brought up a lot of Things) and it's very cathartic to see him get actual therapy in fic lmao.
- Luna Lovegood (from the Harry Potter series) JKR sucks but this is probably the most high profile case of a possible inattentive ADHD character so I didn't want to leave it out. She's a daydreamer, she is a big space cadet and seems to live in her own world, she has a very out of the ordinary sense of style, she's bullied for being weird, but she's also very kind and perceptive and cares a lot about her friends, and good at coming up with out of the box solutions. I wouldn't call it good representation, she's described as a wacko whom a lot of characters find cringeworthy but she's also pretty heroic, so. And she does seem to hyperfocus on magical creatures. Plus her father could also have it (and it runs in families).
- Jasper Fahey (from Six of Crows duology, Leigh Bardugo) Part of a young group of thieves with a heart of gold, he's a charmer and a compulsive gambler who quits college and incurs debts so massive he stops talking to his father out of shame. He's also an extremely talented sharpshooter and the scenes where he describes how the whole world slows and the rush of adrenaline when he is shooting sound like hyperfocus to a T. He's a loyal friend but also quite dependent on Kaz, the leader of the group, to keep him in line. He's witty, messy and he likes danger. His boyfriend later in the series, Wylan, is dyslexic and the way they learn to accommodate each other's issues honestly makes them one of my favorite couples ever. I need to reread these books and I am so stoked for the series I hope they do Jasper justice.
- Julian Diaz (from Cemetary Boys, Aiden Thomas) Love interest of the book, introduced as the 'high school resident bad boy', energetic motormouth who can't sit still and actually very endearing, has issues in school and gets bored easily, main problem is that he's a ghost...sort of. The whole thing was very cute and I love that Julian's personality is described as fun and attractive instead of annoying (which is, if you haven't noticed already, a pattern).
- Evie O'Neill (from the Diviners series, Libba Bray) She's a flapper in 1920s New York who ran away from her boring little town to make a life for herself ; she's a party girl and an impulsive thrill-seeker who hates standing still and is always looking for excitement to 'fill the void'. She craves fame and attention and pretty things, she can be a loyal friend but is also frequently self-centered and forgetful, she's street smart, resourceful and very charming and witty. She's also grieving, drinks too much and is definitely depressed. She's obviously meant as an archetype of the era, caught between trauma and excess, but it does come over as very hyperactive ADHD as well. Her powers to read objects also really pinged me as a good metaphor for the ADHD tendency to be overwhelmed by details.
The 'bit more of a reach but there's a vibe' list :
- Emma Woodhouse (from Emma, Jane Austen) Frequently cited as a character with ADHD, I didn't come up with this one but she fits. She's daydreaming, easily bored, has flights of fancy and hyper-focuses on matchmaking, is a bit impulsive and thrill seeking, clever in an unconventional way, described as a bit immature, mix of caring and self-centered.
- Ronan Lynch (from the Raven Cycle, Maggie Stiefvater) Ronan just has Neuroatypical Vibes, even though it's not entirely clear what, and I've seen people label him all sorts of things which is very valid. As for ADHD, he's restless, impulsive, likes to Go Fast and do street racing, he has very strong emotions he doesn't know what to do with, and big self esteem issues esp. at the start, is very all or nothing with people, snarky, drops out of school to be a magic farmer, problems with authority, looks like a scary mean goth but is actually a big softie (but like, with a few people), pulls shit out of his dreams. Is kind of dependent on his best friend at the start too.
- Sherlock Holmes (from the eponymous series by Arthur Conan Doyle) Again a character who has been diagnosed with all sorts of things. The biggest ADHD vibe for me is 'my mind rebels at stagnation' and the way he needs drugs to function outside of the thrill of a case, and the way he hyper-focuses on information he needs to be a detective while completely ignoring common knowledge. Also sort of dependent on his best friend Watson and isn't great at social interactions. Doesn't care much about upholding social conventions either. The RDJ adaptation is the one that has the most ADHD vibes to me.
- Harley Quinn (DC Comics/Movies) Big codependency issues (that's arguably the thing she's most known for) and sadly people with ADHD are often prone to getting into abusive relationships. It depends on the story too but she's very energetic, zany, impulsive, she likes shiny things and bright clothes, she's fun and chaotic and likes to break the rules, she's a criminal but she does seem to have a heart, she's also frequently immature and rash, etc.
What are your headcanons ? I would love to hear if you have some so I can add them to the list. I'll make a TV/Movies list soon.
