LILITH

WHO IS SHE?

In Demonic and Jewish culture, Lilith is the first Eve or wife of Adam, she refused Adams’ advances and attempts to subvert her power, independence, and inherent equality. She is the Queen of Demons and and the wife of Samael, from whom came the succubi. She is the Infernal Moon and Queen of the Infernal Sabbat. She does have an angelic aspect as well, that of being a protectress of mothers and children (duality). Her nature is that of feminine fertility, seduction, and the cycles of the Moon, and perhaps one of the reasons she is considered “evil” being her ability to seduce, to take what she wishes, and disregard those who displease her. She is feminine strength and individualized focus. As Samael (the Serpent) is considered, according to gender, to be the Daemon of Wizards and Warlocks, Lilith is the Patroness and Queen of Witches.

Lilith is the great mother and is also associated with fertility. Food offerings to Lilith should be ritually consumed without delay. Any offerings that are not consumed should be disposed of in a way that shows respect for the spirit of Lilith. For example, the offered food could be left outside for the animals to feed on, or it could be buried in the earth.

WHAT ARE SIGNS THAT LILITH WANTS ME TO WORK WITH HER?

Doc if you wanted to impress someone with a gourmet chocolate box, what would you get?

Mostly, I think you impress people by thinking of them, all other things aside. I am impressed when I get good chocolates, period. I am doubly impressed when there are things in the box like whiskey chocolates, or coconut chocolates, or literally anything where I'm like, "Oh, I know why they thought of me!"

So, if I wanted to impress someone, I would go down to my little local, which has, not even me being Montana Proud or whatever, some of the best chocolates I've ever had. The only equals I've found are twice the cost. (Brockel's also could charge more than they do.) And I would pick out an assortment for them based on things I think they would like. I normally get huckleberry chocolates for someone not local, because that's the local 'thing' but also brockel's is known for its mint pattie, so I like to get that unless I know someone hates mint. Then I like to think, do they like nuts? There are some really lovely caramels they make. I once got a wine and a sea salt truffle because a Jewish couple I know got a new house and wine and salt are traditional gifts. I pick them myself and hope they will feel thought of even if everything is not a winner.

Now, if the question is: Doc, what are the most impressive chocolates I can buy online for delivery? LA Burdick. Hands down. No question. @sailorsunspot and @moonlight-frittata got me some like...what, four or five YEARS ago?? And I still think about them. They are the high quality of brockel's but much much prettier and the assortment includes the cutest fucking chocolate mice. They have some wildly good flavors that are so creative and unique, another regrettable dunk on my guys.

These are all great chocolate houses: Richart, Dandelion, Maison du Chocolat, depending on what your recipient values. For some applications I'll also recommend Jaques Torres or Vosges.

If the question is: Doc, what is the impressive chocolates you would like to be sent? Literally anything above, but I've always wanted to try Zotter chocolate bars. They have such interesting looking fillings, and I've heard such great things about them!

EVENT OF THE MONTH:

🤘The legendary Bikini Kill first parted ways in 1997, but their hot ticket reunion tour has been blowing fans old and new away since 2019. After a pandemic pause from touring, their eagerly-awaited Montréal show at MTelus takes place at long last on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Brief Personality: It’s hard to fully pinpoint Immanuel’s personality, when they don’t know someone they will change their personality on a whim, becoming whatever the other person wants them to be. However once you get closer to them you can start to see the true them underneath all of that. A creative, socially awkward, dork.

Brief Backstory: Immanuel was born to kill. That is their purpose according to heaven. Their goal from the moment they were made was to kill the Antichrist by any means necessary. And Immanuel became a perfect killing machine, cold, calculating, being able to manipulate anyone who got in their way. They were punished and trained relentlessly throughout their entire childhood.

However, Heaven didn’t take into account what would happen when Immanuel was able to step out into the world and see what it’s really like. Less destruction at every corner and more beautiful. And when Immanuel met Michael it was even more of a shock to him that Michael was not a soul sucking evil monster but just, a guy.

The rich amber honey pooling in their shared bowl is as sweet as it is sticky. The sliced apple is, too (sweet, not sticky), crisp and juicy, but with a slight edge of tartness that adds character to the flavor.

It’s fitting enough, Crowley thinks wryly, as new year symbolism goes. Life is sweet, especially with Aziraphale in it, and he hopes with all his extraneous heart that this will continue to be the case in the coming year. But neither of them has ever been one for total, unmitigated sweetness. A little zest, a little tang, a little bite… honey needs something to counterbalance it.

Catching the eye of the angel on the other side of the table, Crowley grins. It’s one of the many things he appreciates about his and Aziraphale’s relationship. The way each of their sharp edges — and they both have them, many of them — compensates for the other’s soft spots. And vice versa. They balance well.

i've been in the process of conversion for a year and a half, which is not enough to call myself properly jewish but is apparently more than enough to be scared to death of what's happening right now

i'm disabled (semisevere long covid/chronic fatigue)

i'm trans, aroace, and gay

the meaning behind the url and theming is:

for a year or so now, dandelions have felt very jewish to me. both because of how much people tend to hate them, but also because they're survivors. a dandelion will grow in a crack in the sidewalk in an inch of soil and it'll still bloom proudly. it sends taproots deep down into the ground and they're very hard to uproot. and no matter how much people try to get rid of them for the sake of lawns, there's always more come next spring.

dandelions are a symbol of jewish hope for me.

Ghosts

Thinking is a chain process of endless cause and effect. One though can give rise to another contingent or completely unrelated one but the chain is not broken.

So what prompted me to write ‘Ghosts’ as the title for this piece? It was an ‘external’ thought - a piece of writing, by the American Lore Segal, in her short story ‘Dandelion.’ It’s a reminiscence of her last holiday in Austria as a child. This, a country that, in the late 1930s, strongly encouraged jewish citizens to leave Austria as part of their 'Aryanisation' programme. subjecting them to confiscation of their businesses, money, property and subjecting them to significant personal harassment and violence, eventually leading to forcible arrest and deportation to the death camps during the Holocaust.

Her family holiday was in the Austrian Alps, and she is describing the qualities of landscape and light much as JM Turner might have done in paint. Her phrase, ‘light like a mist’ struck in me a resonance which provoked a ‘memory’ thought of a visit to Haggs Castle in Glasgow when I was, possibly a similar age to Lore (10) when she was on her vacation.

My cousin, Hugh, and I, went into the castle grounds which had been closed off for renovations. Whilst exploring the castle interior, which was small-scale and bare of any objects or decoration. After we split up, I was in a small room when I felt a presence to my left. As I looked into an adjacent room through a bare doorway portal, I saw, and felt, a woman staring intensely belligerently at me, dressed in Elizabethan costume, gliding past the door aperture. The quality of what I saw was a bit like carved crystal but very intense, as if the air had congealed to form a ‘pattern’ if the translucent woman. It was less ‘light like a mist’ and more like ‘congealed light’ which obscured the background yet still let it through. One reads in Dante’s Purgatorio that Spirits do not block sunlight, and cast shadows as does human form. Another difference from a mere image engraved in crystal, apart from its gliding animation, was the sense of a being inhabiting the form giving a very powerful sense of presence.

My daft cousin, who had ventured down into the pitch black dungeons, yelled that he’d seen a ghost and we both legged it out of the castle and scrambled back over the site perimeter fencing.

Now I’m a sceptic, so tend to view such experiences with more than a pinch of salt. The sense of taboo in being in a place I was not supposed to be, getting separated from my cousin and being alone in a ‘creepy’ place contributes to a heightened sense of anticipation. I’m also minded of the Buddhist tale of the man haunted by the ‘ghost’ of his recently deceased nagging and shrewish wife who says she will be ‘keeping an eye on him,’ and taunts him, relating all his actions and thoughts which convinces him she really is a spirit. It’s only when a priest instructs him to ask her three questions. The first two: “What did I do yesterday? What am I thinking right now?” ‘she’ answers correctly, but when he asks “How many pebbles am I holding in my hand?” ‘she’ struggles to answer then disappears, never to return. Experiments with psilocybin and LSD clearly demonstrate the power of the mind to create alternative realities, and this power seems clearly linked to development within the human species (read Merlin Sheldrake’s ‘Entangled Life’ chapter 4 for more on this).

So, the question is, are ghosts simply concretized thoughts? hallucinations? The Dharma points out that nothing is, of itself, self-existent. Answers on a postcard address to… onself.

I matched with a guy I’d seen on the apps for years. I thought he was too boring to ask out before, but this time when he mentioned a place, I said we should go there. He seemed like my type– Jewish, real job, reasonably attractive and put together, but before the date I considered backing out. I just had the feeling this wasn’t it. We met at Dandelion Chocolate where he treated me to a tiny cup of sipping chocolate. He opened his arms for a hug when he saw me, and I gave him the most half-assed hug I could. I realize I could have said “no thanks” or “I don’t hug” (not true), but I think that would have tanked the date. Actually, it was already tanked when he opened his arms. Sometimes I feel open and warm and sometimes I don’t. We spent exactly 1 hour chatting outside. His laugh had real “I am supposed to laugh at this” vibes, and several times he either misunderstood or did not hear what I was saying, causing me to clarify or repeat myself. I had the sense throughout that we were not on the same wavelength, which he confirmed by giving me a parting hug.
