Pairings: Human!Nine x Rose; Human!Ten x Jack; Clara Oswald x Olivia Baxter (OC).

Synopsis: "Rose opened the interactive screen and changed the setting for the attached glass wall. It became transparent. Allegro turned around to see Maxence wandering around his cage, a washable felt tip in hand. He had a screen open with all the results his team had entered on their work space and all the other walls were covered with his handwriting."

A/N: I've started writing this fiction last year after I had a particularly weird dream (as usual) and after I wrote the prologue, I've put it aside to work on other stuff. I've gone back to it not so long ago and decided that it would be the fiction I would post next, after not posting anything for a while. I must have watched I am legend and Game of thrones way too much to come out with something like this but I hope you will like it. I am not a scientist, nor did I have a particular knowledge of sciences. I do my researches on the internet like everyone to make sure everything is as close to the reality as possible. I have a literature degree only. Writing is what I do and it makes me explore next fields, and learn new things.

CHAPTER 14:

Amy didn’t leave Rose any second while she worked. It was an offer Rose had made to her: observing her as she worked so she could make her own opinion on her. She wouldn’t be biased by anything her patient would have said. Rose was only natural when she was working. She wasn’t pretending to be fine. She wasn’t wearing a mask. She was just herself and being a witness of it would help Amy understand her patient better. The therapist was glad that this idea came from Rose herself and not from her. The woman wasn’t gonna refuse this opportunity and she wasn’t gonna abuse this benefit either. Rose had also offered her to be a friend and that was very unexpected for Amy. Someone asking to be a friend. Rose hadn’t asked questions about why she had had to leave the session for a few minutes. She was giving Amy the time to build a good friendship before opening up to her. The therapist was sat beside Zachary who was keeping his eyes on the screen before him. He was trying to fix the intrusion that had happened a couple days ago. The hacker had left a real mess inside the codes and he had to fix this. Amy’s eyes were focused on Rose though. Standing in front of Allegro’s cage, she was reading the updates on his condition. She was studying the scans from two days ago and the ones Tegan had done in the morning. There was a clear evolution. Being exposed to the UV lights had caused him to develop some symptoms of the virus and react consequently. Now that the lights were off, he had gotten back to normal and was being completely normal again. He was a bit shaken by the situation but he was talking to Liv when he felt the need to. He refused to speak to Amy. He trusted Liv more than the therapist to be honest. The security guard came to the intercom and pressed the button. He was curious about his own situation. Except for Liv and sometimes Zach, no one was speaking to him. And no one was telling him much about how things were evolving for him, for Maxence, for the cure. “How is he going?” he asked. Rose raised her head from the notes she was taking and glanced at Allegro. She tucked her pen in the pocket of her white coat. She pressed the button to answer. “He’s better. Kyle has been brave by going inside unprotected to save his life. I’ve released him today. He hasn’t developed the virus thankfully.” “Antibodies?” “We’re working on that. His body has rejected the noctiagus very fast.” “It’s good. He’s very young. Would have been a really bad thing to lose him too.” “We haven’t lost you, nor Maxence.” “But we’re both in a cage, and he’s infected.” “Both of you are helping us to find the cure.” “How?” Rose opened the interactive screen and changed the setting for the attached glass wall. It became transparent. Allegro turned around to see Maxence wandering around his cage, a washable felt tip in hand. He had a screen open with all the results his team had entered on their work space and all the other walls were covered with his handwriting. “Someone hacked the system and made us believe that his sensors had to be changed. But when we proceeded to the change, the phial wasn’t the right one. Someone has replaced the sensors with a supposed cure that did more damages than anything else.” “Have you found who did this?” “Not yet. But we have a couple of detectives here. Maybe they will find this for us.” Rose chuckled lightly. It was her first joke in a while. She set the wall back to opaque. For a second, Allegro was silent. He put his hands in his pockets. “Who are those detectives?” “Camden McCarson and Donna Noble. Jack has recommended them. Him and Clara think the virus has been created by someone and the detectives are looking for the patient zero.” “Is there any chance to find him or her?” “Very little. But if we don’t try, we’ll never know.” “Indeed.” Their talk was over for now. Allegro walked back to his camp bed and lay back down. His hands behind his head, he looked at the ceiling. Rose finished taking her notes and put them aside. She went to Maxence’s cage and read the new formulas on the walls. He was doing quite a nice work. She was a molecular biologist too and all of this made sense to her… except for one thing. She pulled out her own washable felt pen and wrote down another formula right under the wrong one. She did it backward so he could read it from his cage. Then, she knocked on the glass wall to draw his attention. Maxence raised his head when he heard the knock and walked closer to where Rose was. She pointed to the formula she had written. He took his time to read it and checked his notes. He shook his head and pointed to another formula. He was trying to explain her how he had come to this conclusion and she was trying to tell him where she thought he was wrong. It was a silent communication, all in hand gestures and written formulas on a glass wall. It was fascinating for Amy. Any other couple of scientists wouldn’t have had this alchemy between them. They were working together as if they were the same person. If there was a picture next to the soulmate definition in the dictionary, it had to be them. They were the perfect representation of this word. Even in the darkest times, they remained together, hand in hand. Amy grabbed a pen and a piece of paper to note her observations. Usually, she was recording them but she couldn’t record what was happening here. She could later ask for the videos but they wouldn’t be as convincing as seeing it happen live. She was envious. She had never had this kind of love with someone. Not even with her ex-husband. The thought distracted her and, for a minute, she was unable to focus on Rose without thinking about what she had lost on this terrible night. She could hear it still. The screams, the screeching of the tyres on the road, the gasp of surprise, and that sound. That so terrible sound that was haunting her nightmares. She closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath. She needed to push it away quickly, before anyone could see her weakness. Now wasn’t the time but she was vulnerable and had troubles controlling herself. “Are you okay?” Amy jumped when she felt a hand touching her shoulder and turned around. Rose was done with Maxence. They had managed to find a solution to the problem they had found in the formulas obviously and Maxence was using a new colour to distinguish his new notes from the old ones. “He’s a busy bee,” she remarked. She hated how her voice was trembling, how Rose was seeing clear in the poker face she was showing. She hated being this vulnerable. Rose glanced quickly at her husband. “Yeah. We found something. I’m waiting until he’s done to compare our results.” If he happened to have the same as hers, it meant that they were on a good path. They couldn’t be wrong if the two of them were coming to the same conclusions. “He’s almost done.” Rose knew she shouldn’t do what she had in mind but she would do it anyway. She had promised to be a friend for Amy and her mission was to help her to get better. So she was gonna take her to the room she was sharing with Maxence and she was gonna force her to have some rest there instead of going to her office like she always did. The therapist was as exhausted as Rose and a bit of rest was hardly a luxury. Maxence concluded his formulas and Rose checked them. She smiled. They had the same results. They hadn’t used the same way to get there but the result was there. She pressed the intercom button. “Add this on your interface. I’ll transfer it all to Tegan.” Maxence nodded. He would do just that. Rose watched him sadly for a minute. She really wanted to come in there and hug him tight to tell him that everything would be alright. She would find this cure. She murmured an ‘I love you’ and told Amy to follow her. “Where are you taking me?” “To a place that used to be my oasis of calm before.” Amy had to admit that she was intrigued and it didn’t get any better when she recognised the private parts of the building. They passed by the dormitories but didn’t stop before they reached the kitchen. “First, let’s eat something. I’m rather hungry. Aren’t you?” “Sort of.” Amy wasn’t eating much. It had been this way since that night. She was eating just enough to have strengths for the day. This meal was the first real one she was eating in a while. But Rose wasn’t letting her refuse. She was even forcing her to eat a bit more than necessary. After that, she took her to the room she was sharing with Maxence, the room where all their pictures were. A room where she was supposed to find her own peace and have a better night of sleep.

Tegan was standing in the middle of his office, his arms folded on his chest, and his foot lightly tapping the ground. He was being impatient and angry all at once. Soon as he was done with the detectives, he had sent them to work. Jack had tried to stay and find out what was annoying him so badly but Tegan had resisted and convinced him that this matter only concerned Martha, Colin and him. He would let him know later maybe. No one else should know about this attempt of sabotage. Martha and Colin were there now. Both were sat on the couch and they were waiting for Tegan to speak. Martha was rather worried about this sudden summoning and Colin… Colin was Colin. He was sat there, impassible. Tegan couldn’t do anything against him. He was the real boss here. So he wasn’t worried. “Are you gonna look daggers at us all day or tell us what has made you summon us?” His words were sweating with sarcasm but he was trying to be as nice as he could be in front of Tegan. There was a witness and he couldn’t be caught bullying him once again. He doubted Martha would intervene between them but she could spread rumours just by talking with her stupid boyfriend, Ricky. Or Mickey. Whatever he was called. Tegan grabbed the report on his desk and threw it on Colin’s lap without a word. He was so furious he wanted to punch him in the face. But that wasn’t the attitude of a leader. So he was containing his rage. “One of you had mixed a new cure without telling me and this cure was given to our patient number one.” “And? What’s the matter? Isn’t that why you’re keeping him downstairs?” Tegan swallowed the anger rising in his chest. Colin was obviously looking for troubles with him. Martha was glancing at them worriedly. She didn’t know the story between the two of them but it didn’t seem to be a nice one. “This cure hasn’t been registered and it has been given without any consent. Everything is supposed to be given to me first for approval before anything.” “I haven’t mixed anything,” admitted Martha. “I’m still waiting for the new results. They haven’t been approved yet since…” She gave a look to Colin. He wasn’t in the elite team so she didn’t know what she could say before him. She didn’t want to make a mistake and be yelled at for it. Tegan was in a murderous mood and she wouldn’t cause him to have a go at her. “Martha, you can go. Not a word about this to anyone.” “What? A couple words and you believe her?” Tegan made a gesture of the hand to signify Martha that she was dismissed. He believed her. He would believe anyone but Colin. Martha hesitantly left the office. This matter was interesting but she wouldn’t know the final word of it obviously. “I have reasons to believe that you’re trying to sabotage our researches. I have no proof but I am convinced you’re still working on this cure, that you’re trying to beat us to it.” “Why would I do that?” “We both know why. You’ve been removed from the noctiagus researches and you’re angry. You hate me and I’m your boss now. To me, there are enough reasons here for you to get on my way.” “You’re being paranoid.” “You’ve created that cure.” “Maybe.” “Don’t try to lie. I know you did. I have access to all the cameras in this building. I’ve seen the videos.” He was bluffing and hoped that it would work because he wasn’t a good liar usually. Lying in his bully’s face was harder too. Colin didn’t let any reaction appear on his face. It was infuriating Tegan so much. “So, how’s good old Maxence? He hasn’t gone mad in that cage of his?” “Maxence hasn’t come back from his last mission.” “Oh, don’t play fool with me. I know he’s down there. Everyone knows. It’s not because you created this special team that keeps secret everything they do that there aren’t leaks.” “If you had good narks in this building, you would know better.” Colin was done with Tegan’s assumptions on him and his hidden threats that would lead nowhere. If the man had had the courage to do anything, he would have done it already since he had full power now. He had admitted himself that he didn’t have proof that he was guilty of what was done to Maxence. It was an attempt of murder. Despite his condition, Maxence was still the head and heart of this department and of this team. Attacking him was attacking the whole team. It had been made to destabilise them. But Colin was too clever to admit that he was guilty. “The same works for you, Smith. If you had good narks in this building, you’d be better informed about what is going on in your department.” Colin was playing it nasty. He was playing on the guilt that was eating out Tegan. He was the one who made that injection who could have killed his so precious mentor. He was the one who made a mistake and that was torturing him. “Shut up, Appleton. My mistake was created by some freaking bastard that messed with our stuff. And that freaking bastard is you, you can’t convince me otherwise.” Colin got up and grabbed Tegan by the throat. He pushed him so hard that the young man had to step backward to keep his balance. Tegan noticed for the first time that he was taller than Colin. The man was more aggressive but he was just like small dogs who kept barking and never really were able to hurt. Tegan was one of the bigger dogs who never hurt anyone in anyway, a dog that could attack and kill at any time. He hated this comparison because that just wasn’t defining him at all. He refused to be mean and evil for free. It just wasn’t in his character. “Careful what you say, Smith. You might be the boss now but there’s no witness at the moment and I can destroy you with a snap of my fingers.” “Go on then. Let’s see if you really have that pair you’re boasting about.” Colin had reached the point of no return this time. His fist collided with Tegan’s beardy jaw. The punch resounded in the silent office and the sudden shock threw Tegan against the wall behind him. For a moment, all he could see was black. He shouldn’t have provoked Colin that way and this punch was more than enough to sack him. It was one more reason added to the long list of why Colin shouldn’t be working here anymore. “There’s nothing you can do against me. I’ve created this cure and made sure you would inject it to him. His reaction to it wasn’t the one expected but I’m not gonna apologise for him almost dying. I should have taken his place when he was infected. But he gave it to you instead.” Tegan just laughed despite the pain of his jaw. Colin was so overwhelmed by his jealousy that he wasn’t doing anything right anymore. He was giving himself away – certainly thinking that Tegan would find no clue to prove this – and beating his superior. As if nothing mattered anymore. “You won’t find that cure, Colin. You’re fired.” “Oh, who’s firing me? You?” “Maxence promoted me to this position. So yeah, I am firing you.” That second punch met his face properly. He would have a black eye for sure but he couldn’t help but laugh. It was infuriating Colin but laughing was relieving him from all the pressure Colin had previously put on his shoulders. Now he wasn’t fearing this man anymore. It was over. Even when Colin threw him to the ground, he kept laughing. He didn’t even try to protect himself. “You’re so done.” “Shut up! SHUT UP!” The door was unlocked and suddenly two security members were surrounding Colin. They grabbed him by the arms and arrested him. They would throw him into a locked room for now. Tegan had pronounced his sentence but he wasn’t cruel enough to force Colin to leave the building and live among the infected. He wasn’t wishing it to his worst enemies. “Liv is on her way,” said one of the security members. “We’ve told her you would need her.” Tegan nodded to thank them. Indeed, he would need Liv. But it was only for the physical part. On the psychological part, he would need Amy. Later. When the adrenaline would have come down. When he would realise what he had done and what it would imply now.

Camden and Donna were surrounded by dozens of cardboard boxes full of results of different patients across the world. There even was a list of all the infected people – that was updated every day – and a list of some of dead. No one could keep clear records about the dead because no one was staying outside long enough to keep track of it. Camden wasn’t gonna blame them. Outside was hell and this place was safety. Even if it was too sterilised for his liking. And people were too serious. No sense of humour. Lots of glaring if he was making a remark. Most of them were wondering why they were here. Why would Tegan hire detectives? It was a mystery and Camden wouldn’t tell them about his mission. He was too focused on it. He would go to the end of it and go back to his little life in his manor. Donna was just as focused on their mission as he was. Highlighters in hand, she was adding colours to the documents she was reading. She was also writing down notes. In front of her, there were bottles of water and snacks. They had been brought earlier by Clara so they wouldn’t be starving or become too thirsty if they were working too much. She had also taken that opportunity to speak with Camden that she hadn’t seen in a while and given him some clues for his own researches. She doubted she would be of any help but better try than do nothing. “How have you met her?” Camden raised his head from the documents he was reading and glanced at Donna. She was having a break and drinking water from one of the bottles before her. She picked a snack and opened it. She had been curious about how Camden could know people like Clara Oswald and Jack Harkness. Two people that were very different from each other but also from Camden. Too joyful, too flirty. Not that Donna minded Jack flirting with her. “Who?” “Doctor Oswald.” “She wasn’t a doctor when I’ve met her. She was just a little girl.” “Are you that old?” “Oi!” “Just kidding. Relax.” “Her parents owned a paper shop. They had really good stuff. I used to order my notebooks to them and I was coming to get it when I was around. Clara was always playing in the shop. A girl full of energy and always smiling.” “I didn’t know you liked kids.” “I don’t. But she was different.” “That’s what we say.” Camden sighed and went back to work, ignoring Donna’s chuckle. She had had her answer, now they could go back to work. He was currently reading a report from the early days of the infection. Something dragged his attention. A name. “Wait, isn’t the nickname Missy ringing a bell?” “Nope.” “I’m sure to have seen that name somewhere.” He looked into the files he had already flipped through. This name had appeared somewhere. He remembered it well. He had a very good memory. It wasn’t in a list of names. It was a report. A report from before the infection. Missy or Myrtle Appleton. Sister of Colin Appleton and mad scientist. What was she working on at the moment? He glanced at the different reports he had under his eyes. Xeroderma pigmentosum. Disease of the sun. If you were suffering from this disease, you wouldn’t be able to go out unless it was night and the lights would be a bother. A terrible disease and a very short longevity. “Xeroderma pigmentosum,” he murmured. “Hm.” “There has always been this disease. The disease of the sun. People who can’t stand the ultraviolet lights. They are living a very short life and suffering from multiple complications.” “What’s the link with that Missy?” “Myrtle Appleton was a specialist of this disease. She was leading researches to find a cure.” “Was?” “Her methods weren’t very conventional.” And this was why she had been sacked from the lab she was working in and the reason why she had been forced to continue her researches in the deepest secret. If there was a path to follow for their mission, it was clearly this one…

However, for Maxence, things were getting complicated. His brain seemed to have switched to a standby mode. A sort of sleep that wasn’t really sleep. He was just laying there with his eyes closed. Zachary was keeping an eye on his vital signs. His brain activity had reduced to the minimum, to the very minimum. If Zach didn’t have the other information under his eyes, he would think that the man was dead or about to be. Maybe he was dying. Zachary wasn’t very qualified on this field but he was clever enough to understand that something was wrong. The vital signs weren’t good at all. He entered an alert on their interactive group work. Someone needed to come and do a check up on him. Just to be sure that the fake cure given to him wasn’t having any effect on him anymore. Just a precaution not to lose him all of a sudden.

Chase

A/N: Full-length piece I wrote for the septicart event. I’ll try to do a couple more egos before it’s over, but I don’t think I can get to all of them.

Warning: Mentions of suicide.

It had been a few weeks since the incident, and as Chase lay in his hospital bed, he found he still felt the same. He missed his children, he missed Stacey. Her rejection had hurt him in a way he had never thought possible, like a knife twisting in his heart and draining his life of meaning. It was so painful, and he had thought nothing but death could possibly release him from the pain. Even now it sent a pang through his heart to think of all that had happened. Not to mention what he had done to all those people…

A soft knock at the door to his room brought him out of his thoughts and he looked up listlessly as Dr. Schneeplestein entered the room, a mess of papers in one hand, and a mug of what Chase assumed to be coffee in the other. As usual, his hair was a mess underneath his cap, and his mask hung around his neck. His coat swished around him, and there was what looked like a large coffee stain on the collar.

For a minute, there was no sound other than the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor, the shuffle of papers, and the soft sound of Schneeplestein muttering under his breath as he went about his business. When he was done organizing his papers, he came up to the bed and began fiddling with the drip attached to his IV.

“How are you feeling today, Chase?” Schneeplestein asked him. His voice was gentle and caring, unlike the professional tone he used with his other patients. Not that Schneep got a lot of other patients. After all, he wasn’t technically a real doctor, but no one had the heart to tell him otherwise. He had saved Chase’s life, after all, not to mention Jack’s.

Chase noticed Schneeplestein was watching him intently, awaiting a response. “Huh? Oh, better, I guess.” He didn’t meet Schneep’s eyes, even as his voice came out raspy and weak.

“Vhat about your headaches?” He checked the IV needle in Chase’s hand.

“Still bad,” Chase answered as Schneep unwound the bandages on his head, poking and prodding lightly at the wound on the side of his head. He flinched as Schneep’s fingers brushed the wound, but forced himself to relax when he saw the pained look on his friend’s face. “So, uh…” He didn’t know what he could say. Suddenly, guilt rose in his throat like bile and he felt hot tears prick at the corners of his eyes. He couldn’t bring himself to speak.

Schneeplestein put a hand on his shoulder. “Chase, ve are here for you. Vhat you did does not matter, what matters now is zhat you are here vith us, and zhat you are safe.” Schneep took a seat beside him on the bed. With gentle hands, Schneep wrapped his head with fresh bandages, and they sat in silence for a minute. Finally, Schneep broke the silence. “I vas going to save zhis until you vere a bit better, but I feel like you need it now more zhan ever.”

He rose to his feet and rummaged through the cupboards above the stainless steel sink on the far side of the room. After a minute of searching, he let out an exclamation of triumph, took a long draught of coffee, and returned to Chase’s side. He was holding a wrapped box in his hands.

There was another knock at the door. Schneep set the present at Chase’s feet, irritation crossing his features. “Vhat now? One moment, my friend,” he said to Chase, pushing his glasses back into place. He went to the door and opened it a crack, peering out. Chase watched, wondering who would want to visit him.

There was a minute of quiet conversation between Schneeplestein and whoever was on the other side of the door, too quiet for Chase to eavesdrop. He shifted a little in his bed, wincing as a lightning bolt of pain shot through his head. He squeezed his eyes shut and carefully massaged his temples like Schneeplestein had showed him.

When he opened his eyes, there were three more people in the room with them. He started, and he felt the guilt make a comeback, twisting his insides painfully. How could he face them after what he had done? He had barely been able to talk to Schneeplestein the first time he had woken up. But this was so much worse. They were all there, all watching, all judging. He couldn’t meet their eyes.

“Hey, Chase.” That was Marvin, his cape askew and his unkempt hair spilling out around the edges of his cat mask. Always there, always supportive, even when he wasn’t the one performing. Had he been there that day? Chase couldn’t remember for sure, but he had the feeling that he was.

Standing on Marvin’s left was Jackieboy Man, his red suit wrinkled and a hint of dark circles peering out from behind the mask. The hero, the one who always did his best to keep everyone safe. Chase didn’t know it, but Jackieboy Man had been spending every second of his spare time right outside the door, anxiously awaiting any news of his friend’s condition. What had he thought, Chase wondered, when he failed to stop me?

The tears were back, threatening to escape. He still could not bring himself to meet their gazes. Why had he done that? Why had he tormented them like that? What was Stacey going to think? What was she going to tell the kids? Finally, Chase gave in and let his emotions spill over.

“I’m sorry,” he sobbed, “I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.” He put his face in his hands, shame making him sob even harder. God, why had he done that? Why had he been so selfish? Why had he done all those horrible things? Did he even deserve their forgiveness?

No, Chase thought, No I don’t. Another stab of pain flashed through his head, this one much worse than the last, and he bent double, his sobs giving way to gasps of pain as the stab turned into a steady throbbing, like a jackhammer was going to work on his skull. The pain was almost unbearable and he was overcome with the urge to bash at his head until it all faded away. He raised his fist and prepared to swing.

A weight settled on either side of him, and he felt a firm grip on his arm. There were whispers in his ears, trying to tell him he would be alright. He refused to open his eyes; the pain was too intense, and the light would only make it worse. Nevertheless, he could see them there, Jackieboy Man holding him back, Marvin muttering calming words, Schneeplestein standing there, the gift in his hands. Soon, the pain faded, and he cried himself dry in their arms.

Finally, he was able to open his eyes again. There they were, just as he had imagined, the concern in their eyes mingled with relief, and he met their gazes with bloodshot eyes. The guilt was still there, the shame still made him want to melt into the floor, but that wouldn’t matter, not if they could forgive him, help him make it all okay again.

“What can I do to make it right?” he asked hoarsely, his voice dry and cracking from his crying.

Jackieboy Man gazed at him from behind his blue mask. “For now, the best you can do is rest up and get better.” He paused and looked to the others for reassurance. Marvin nodded slightly. “You have a long road ahead of you, Chase, I won’t lie. It may take a while, but I believe that with time, you will find your own way to redemption.”

“Just remember that we’re there for you, Chase, every step of the way,” Marvin said. “We are your family, and we love you. We don’t want to see you hurt like that again, ever.” Marvin’s eyes glistened behind his mask and he gulped hard. He gave Schneep a meaningful look.

“Oh! Yes, zhe gift.” He came forward and set the gift in Chase’s lap. Chase stared at it for a second, eyes tracing the golden stripes on the wrapping. “Ve got zhis for you, vith a little help from Jack,” Schneeplestein said.

Chase tore the wrapping paper away, hands shaking slightly, and gingerly took the lid off the Sketcher’s shoebox they had used for a container. He teared up again at the sight of what lay inside the box, and for a moment he was speechless. He held the objects in his hands as if they would crumble to dust at the slightest movement.

“I…I don’t know what to say.” He looked between the three of them, unable to express his gratitude. Then, Schneeplestein handed him a letter. Chase placed the objects gingerly back into their shoebox and took it from him. His eyes were drawn to the scrawled writing on the envelope.

To Chase.

His breath hitched in his throat. It was Stacey’s handwriting.

“Read it,” Schneeplestein urged. Hesitantly, Chase tore open the envelope.

Dear Chase,

I’m so sorry it had to come to this. I had no idea what I was doing, and I wanted to apologize. But it doesn’t change anything. I still love you, Chase, but I believe that we can’t be together, especially after what you did. Your friends have told me that you’re better now, but it doesn’t change what you did, or what you’ll have to do to make it right.

I’m taking the kids, Chase, but if you can prove yourself, maybe I can let you have visitation. I’m only offering you this chance because I know how much you regret what you did, and I believe you are punishing yourself far more than I or the courts would ever be able to do.

Like I said, this doesn’t change anything. But I just wanted you to know that if you can redeem yourself, I won’t keep the kids away from you. I’ve kept all of this from them, so they don’t know anything. Just, please get better, and don’t blow this chance. I believe you can do this, but you need to put in an effort.

Chase looked up at the others, the letter clutched close to his chest. “I can’t believe it,” he whispered, “I don’t deserve her forgiveness.”

“Chase,” Marvin said, “Everyone deserves forgiveness.”

Chase looked away. “Thank you, all of you. I think I know what I need to do now. But first, I think I’d like to sleep for a little bit.” Schneeplestein nodded, evidently agreeing, and he shooed everyone out of the room before checking his vitals one last time and disappearing himself.

Left alone, Chase pondered all that had happened, and looked forward, planning his coming days. He may not deserve it, but he was going to hope, and he was going to try, if not for himself, then for them, his family, his children. With that, he sank into a deep sleep, and for the first time in a long time, there were no nightmares to wake him.

Summary: Y/N is a brilliant young lawyer who was hired by Tony Stark himself. She didn’t expect half of the things that would happened, but she was sure glad Bucky happened.

A/N: Sorry for the delay, fam! I’ve been busy with my law finals and holiday stuff and work and all that jazz. I hope this makes it better? Please enjoy and let me know if you’d like to be talked. PS: more holiday fluff is coming!

Y/N ran out of the tower and quickly hailed a cab, deciding that would be a lot faster than walking or running. Time was of the essence of course, just as Tony had told her. She subconsciously rolled her eyes as she mentally went over what to pack. She hadn’t ever been to Russia before, but she figured it would be cold, and that was something she was not excited about. One of the small joys of California living had always been having mild and temperate winters.

The cab stopped and pulled her out of her thoughts as the driver asked her for his money. She quickly pulled out a twenty dollar bill and shoved it at him as she headed out of the cab and into her building. She bounded over the stairs and started taking them as quickly as her legs would go, happy she didn’t live near the top half of the building.

Out of breathe and still pushing herself to go faster, she unlocked her apartment door and slammed it behind her, gasping when she saw Bucky sitting on her couch, Pickles fast asleep in his lap. His head whipped in her direction and he narrowed his eyes at her, surprised at her sudden reappearance.

“Bucky,” she said still out of breath, “you’re still here! Good.”

“Yes, I’m still here...but why are you? Shouldn’t you be at work?” He gently removed Pickles from his lap and placed her on the cushion next to him as he stood up and walked over to Y/N. Pickles cast him an annoyed glare before curling back up.

“Oh Buckaroo, I have to leave in a few hours. Tony told me to come home and pack,” she had already headed into her bedroom, Bucky trailing after her.

“What are you talking about?”

“Oh-oh fuck, I’m probably not making any sense. I got into work this morning and Tony gave me a job. He said it’s important, and timing is important. I’ve got to head to Russia and help deal with issues with some citizens being detained,” she sighed and ran her hands over her face. She looked over at Bucky and saw his worried expression.

“He’s already making you do this? I don’t how good of an idea that is. Russia is dangerous, anything he’s going to be making you do like this will be dangerous,” he walked over to her and put his hands on her shoulders. He was not a fan of her leaving so suddenly, not knowing exactly what she was walking into.

“Tony chose me to do this. This is part of my job,” she grabbed one of his hands and held it tightly in hers, “it will be okay. I’ll probably only be gone a few days. Just as long as this takes and no more. I’ll be able to handle myself, trust me.”

“Y/N-”

“Bucky, I know this is hard for you, and I can understand why. But things don’t always have to end badly, and I promise this is not one of those times,” her words of reassurance did very little to ease his conscience. He bit his lip in order to keep himself from saying anything else negative.

“Okay...if you’re sure about this,” he leaned down and kissed the top of head, “promise me you’ll be careful. And that you’ll keep in touch. And you that won’t do anything even remotely dangerous.”

Y/N laughed a little bit, both amused at his over protectiveness and happy to know how much he cared about her, “I may be small, but trust me, I can take on anyone. But, Mr. Barnes, I’m glad to know you’re worried about me.”

“Someone has to be aware of your mortality, and apparently it’s not you,” he chuckled as she went back to attempting to pack quickly. She snorted at his comment.

Y/N pulled the zipper closed on her suitcase and sighed in relief. It hadn’t taken her nearly as long as she had anticipated. She had packed the warmest clothes she had and called it a day; she wasn’t sure how long she would be gone so she only grabbed a week’s worth of clothing. Bucky had provided very little help other than nodding or shaking his head at the clothes she held up as he laid on her bed.

She pulled the suitcase off of the bed and flopped down on the bed next to Bucky, trying to savor the little time she had left with him.

“I’m sorry for having to leave so suddenly, Buck,” she sighed and rolled on her side so she could face him. He mirrored her actions and looked deeply into her eyes. While he knew it was her choice to go, it was still not something he wanted her to do. He reached over and stroked her cheek for a moment.

“Me too, pretty girl. But you’ll be back soon, and it’ll be like you never even left,” she beamed at his words at his words as she leaned into him and kissed him hungrily. He smiled at her when they pulled for air after what seemed like an eternity, “I’ll miss being able to do that.”

“Oh my God, you drama queen,” she laughed as she smacked his arm, “I’ll miss you too though. Want to hear a fact?”

“Well, obviously, you owe me one,” he said softly as he ran his hand through her hair.

“I can’t wait to come back and finally….” she trailed off and a deep red blush set into her cheeks. She started giggling a little bit.

“And finally what?” He squinted her eyes at her as he processed what she was saying, “oh. OH. Well we don’t have to wait for that, you know.”

“Way to kill the mood, Buck,” she kissed him quickly, “but now you’ll have to wait for it.”

“I’d wait for you for however long you wanted,” he said in earnest, “my turn?”

“Mhmm,”

“Sometimes when I can’t sleep at night, from the nightmares, I like to bake,” he buried his face in her pillow in embarrassment.

“Aww, that’s so cute. I mean not the reason behind the baking, but the baking. I better have some cupcakes waiting for me when I get back,” she poked his side and took a look at her watch. She sighed when she realized she had to head out., “shit, I’ve got to go.”

“Already?”

“Yeah,” she responded softly. They both got up and he grabbed her suitcase and followed her out the door.

He walked her out to the cab she hailed and put the suitcase in the back. She looked at him fondly as he said his goodbyes to her, “I’ll see you soon.”

“Yes, with cupcakes please. I’ll call you as soon as I can, okay?”

“I’ll be on the lookout. Goodbye for now, Y/N,” he gave her one last kiss and she slid into her seat, Bucky closing the door after her. She held back a few tears as she mentally prepared herself for what was ahead.

Y/N loaded her stuff on the jet when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around, expecting Tony, but was surprised to see Zach, holding a suitcase, approaching her.

“Hello Zach,” she said quietly, opting to tread lightly, after having seen him and his cohorts out last night, “what are you doing here?”

“I”m coming with you,” he flashed her his pearly whites, “didn’t Tony tell you?”

“Can’t say he did,” she said shortly, “I thought you worked strictly in finance?”

“I can work wherever I need to. I’m a sort of jack of all trades,” his response was short and snappy, “by the way, did you tell Tony who you’re dating? He might be interested to know.”

“Huh? I don’t know what you’re talking about,” her eyes widened as she stammered through her lie.

“Don’t try to lie. I saw you with him last night. The Winter Soldier? Really? That doesn’t like very good for you, does it? I mean, we all know what’s he done and what he’s capable of. A murderer and a lawyer, what a duo.”

“First of all, his name is James, and second of all what I do in my private life is just that - private. I suggest you don’t pry where you don’t need to,” she hissed at him and took a window seat far away from him. She hadn’t thought he would end up being someone she’d have to watch her back around, but alas he was.

“Sure, Y/N, I mean Dr. Y/L/N. Whatever you say,” he gave her a smirk as he took a seat opposite her. She rolled her eyes in disbelief at his ego.

Russia wasn’t much like she had pictured. It was definitely not the winter wonderland she had thought it to be based on the movies and shows she had seen. Instead, it was gray and overcast, rain threatening to break through the clouds and onto the crowded city streets. She rued not bringing an umbrella; much to her chagrin Zach had.

Once they had arrived in Moscow, they had been greeted by an emissary from the American Consulate.

“Dr. Y/L/N, Mr. Walsh, a pleasure. We’ve been expecting you,” a middle aged woman met them and stuck her hand out to them, “I’m Florence Hersh. I work here in Moscow at the US Consulate, protecting our citizens when they are away from home.”

“A pleasure,” Y/N gave her a warm smile as she lead them out to her car. Zach was less impressed, and opted to remain silent, eyebrow raised in annoyance.

When they were all settled in and on their way, Florence pulled out some briefing packets and gave them to the two lawyers, “these are the summons and charges that were served upon Rick Claflin and Anthony Williams. They are both being held in the prison in town. We have 2 days to answer and serve our response and establish a prima facie case to get them released. Otherwise they’ll be subject to Russian law, and if they were convicted of the crimes they are accused of, they’d likely end up dead. Something, we obviously want to avoid. However, this is a case of them being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Are there experts bringing in evidence? Solid alibis? Witnesses?” Zach skimmed through the documents.

“Alibis are solid and we have plenty of witnesses to support their story. However,” Florence sighed, “evidence seems to be seems to be conveniently disappearing whenever we get access to it.”

“You think there’s some sort of outside influence? Like what? Or who?” Y/N narrowed her eyes as she realized this might be more than she bargained for.

“We’re not 100% sure yet, but if there is some kind of interference it might be KGB related. It’s too early to tell, but the experts are working on it,” Zach and Y/N looked at each other in shock. Definitely not what they thought they were getting into.

“Oh. What would they be trying to get scapegoats for?” Y/N asked quietly as she read over the charges.

“Drug smuggling. Murder of Parliament members. Sex trafficking,” Florence was very matter of fact, but Y/N was getting more nervous by the second. She could see why Bucky was reluctant for her to go. Suddenly she was too.

“When do we begin?” Zach was already trying to formulate a game plan on preparing pleadings and trying to free the two men.

“I’d say right about now,” Florence gestured out of the window as the large and ornate consulate building came into view.

“Alright, I guess this is where the fun begins,” Y/N let out a long exhale as they exited the car.

She did say she was ready for anything and had wanted a challenge. And this would be quite the challenge.

Y/N felt her phone buzzing in her pocket and fished it out. She said it was a text from Bucky asking her if they had gotten there safely. She read it, deciding to respond later and put the phone back into her pocket without a second thought.

As the season heats up on the big screen, Guardian writers look back on their picks from the past with killer sharks, mournful crime-fighters and time-traveling teens

Face/Off (1997)

Madman bomber Nicolas Cage stole John Travoltas dead sons life. So gloomy FBI agent Travolta steals Cages face. When Cage steals his face and his wife and freedom John Woos Face/Off becomes the biggest, wackiest and most operatic summer blockbuster in history, a gonzo combustion that flings everything from pigeons to peaches at the screen.

Hong Kong cineastes might applaud a script with roots in the ancient Sichuan opera genre Bian Lian, where performers swap masks like magic. Popcorn-munchers, of which I am front row center, are here to watch whack job Cage and soulful Travolta, two actors who love to go full-ham, play each other and go deep inside their iconographies. Call it hamception. Or just call it a crazy swing that hits a home run as Cavolta and Trage battling it out in a warehouse, a speedboat and, of course, a church. As Cage-as-Travolta gloats to Travolta-as-Cage, Isnt this religious? The eternal battle between good and evil, saint and sinners but youre still not having any fun! Maybe hes not, but we sure are. Bravo, bravo. AN

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Theres been an increasing sense of desperation clinging to the majority of roles picked by Tom Cruise in recent years. Outside of the still shockingly entertaining Mission: Impossible series, he was miscast in the barely serviceable Jack Reacher and its maddeningly unnecessary sequel, his awards-aiming American Made was throwaway and his franchise-starting The Mummy was a franchise-killer. But four summers ago, he picked the right horse just maybe at the wrong time.

Because despite how deliriously fun Edge of Tomorrow was in the summer of 2014, audiences didnt show the requisite enthusiasm. It was a moderate success (enough to warrant a long-gestating sequel) but it should have packed them in, its combination of charm, invention and sheer thrills making it one of the most objectively successful blockbuster experiences in memory. The nifty plot device (Cruise must relive a day of dying while battling aliens over and over again) allowed for some dark gallows humor and a frenetic pace that kept us all giddily on edge while it also contained a dazzling action star turn from Emily Blunt whose fearless Full Metal Bitch wrestled the film away from Cruise. Blame its relative failure on the bland title? Cruise fatigue? Blockbuster over-saturation? Then find a digital copy to watch and rewatch and repeat. BL

Back to the Future (1985)

Back to the Future very nearly wasnt a summer blockbuster. The reshoots required after Eric Stoltz was booted off, then the fact Michael J Foxs Family Ties commitments meant he could only shoot at night all meant filming didnt wrap until late April. Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg duly pencilled in an August / September release.

But then people started seeing it. Test scores were off the scale. Said producer Frank Marshall: Id never seen a preview like that. The audience went up to the ceiling. So they bagsied the best spot the year had to offer 3 July hired a squad of sound editors to work round the clock and two print editors with instructions to get properly choppy. They did, and those big trims tightened yet further one of the tautest screenplays (by Bob Gale) cinema has ever seen. The only bit of fat they left was the Johnny B Goode scene: sure, it didnt advance the story, but the kids at those test screenings knew we were gonna love it. Back to the Future is a pure shot of summer cinema: grand, ambitious, insanely entertaining. Deadpool, Avengers, take note: a blockbuster can be smart as hell so long as it wears it lightly. In the end, by the way, the film spent 11 weeks at number 1 at the US box office. Thats essentially the whole summer. CS

Teminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

The first film I ever saw at the cinema was The Rocketeer. We drove into Bradford city centre, bought our tickets at the Odeon and sat through the 1991 tale which followed the fortunes of a stunt pilot, a rocket pack and a Nazi agent played by Timothy Dalton who sounded like he was from Bury rather than Berlin. The way into the multiplex there was a huge poster for Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Arnie sat on a Harley with a shotgun cocked and ready. My dad was a huge fan of the original but he still couldnt swing taking a seven-year-old to see it. It wasnt until I borrowed a VHS copy that I finally got to see what was behind that image. Skynet, dipshits, T-1000s, a nuclear holocaust and a motorbike chases on the LA river.

Blockbusters dont usually have that edge: theres a more brazen mainstream appeal. But Judgment Day was and still is an exception. It did huge numbers at the box office (more than $500m), was a rare sequel that was arguably better than the original and introduced really odd bits of Spanish idiom into the Bradford schoolyard lexicon. I probably would have been scarred for life watching it as a seven-year-old, but as a teenager it gave me a story I doubt Ill ever get tired of revisiting. LB

The Dark Knight (2008)

The summer of 2008 was a busy one: Barack Obama emerged from a contentious democratic primary to become the first ever black presidential nominee of a major party. The dam fortifying the entire global financial system was about to burst. China hosted its first ever Summer Olympics. But somehow, and not exactly to my credit, what I remember most from that summer is the uncanny, ridiculously over-the-top publicity blitzkrieg that preceded the release of The Dark Knight, which has since emerged as not just an all-time great summer blockbuster, but an all-time great American film, period.

There were faux-political billboards that read I believe in Harvey Dent; a weirdly nondescript website of the same name; Joker playing cards dispersed throughout comic book stores, which led fans to another website where the DA was defaced with clown makeup. Dentmobiles, Gotham City voter registration cards, a pop-up local news channel: the marketing campaign might have seemed excessive had the movie not so convincingly topped it. Ten years later, as films like Deadpool and Avengers: Infinity War try to reach those same heights of virality, The Dark Knight remains the measuring stick by which every superhero movie, and superhero villain, is measured. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

In many ways, Fury Road is summer: arid, scorching, bright enough to be squinted at. The driving force behind all the high-impact driving is scarcity of water, the essence of life in a desert where death practically rises up from the burning sand. Even in the air-conditioned comfort of a multiplex auditorium in Washington DCs Chinatown, watching George Millers psychotic motor opera left this critic sweaty and parched. My world is fire and blood, warns the weary Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) in the scripts opening lines. Staggering out of a theater into the oppressive rays of the sun, it sure can feel that way.

Millers masterpiece fits into the summer blockbuster canon in a less literal capacity as well, striking its ideal balance of dazzling technical spectacle and massively-scaled emotional catharsis. There was plenty of breathless praise to go around upon this films 2015 release, much of it for the feats of practical-effects daring, but the hysterical extremes of feeling cemented its status as a modern classic. I cant deny that Ive watched the polecat sequence upwards of a dozen times, but Millers film truly comes alive in Furiosas howl of desperation, and in Maxs noble disappearance into the throng. CB

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Its the music, its the giant boulder, its the Old Testament mysticism, its the whip, its the Cairo Swordsman, its Harrison Fords crooked smile, its the bad dates, its Karen Allen drinking a sherpa under the table, its the melted faces and exploding heads. Its all these things plus having the good fortune of seeing this at the cinema at a very young age, therefore watching most of it through my terrified fingers. (Indy tells Marion to keep her eyes shut during the cosmic spooky ending; way ahead of you there!)

The modern blockbuster as we know it was created by Steven Spielberg with Jaws and George Lucas with Star Wars, so the hype was unmatched when the two collaborated in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark. As a kid I had no idea this was a loving homage to cliffhanger serials from the 30s and 40s, I took it as pure adventure. The seven-and-a-half minute desert truck chase (I dont know, Im making thus up as I go) is probably the best action sequence in all of cinema (John Woos Hard Boiled does not have a horse, sorry), but watching as an adult one notices a lot of sophisticated humor, too. (Indy being too exhausted to make love to Marion, for example, is something that didnt connect when I was six.)

Its strange to think I watched these cartoon Nazis on VHS with my grandparents who had escaped the Holocaust, and no one benefits when you do the math to figure out how young Marion was when, as Indy puts it, you knew what you were doing. But for thrills, laughs and propulsive camerawork (though a little mild Orientalism), nothing tops this one. JH

Independence Day (1996)

Short of actually calling their film Summer Blockbuster, rarely can a films height-of-summer release date been so central to a films raison detre. This being the mid-90s, when po-mo and self-referentiality was all the rage, brazenly hooking your tentpole film to 4 July was seen as a pretty smart idea.

Fortunately, all the ducks did line up in a row for ID4: a game-changing performance from Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum at (arguably) his funniest, a rousingly Clintoneque president in Bill Pullman and most importantly in that run-up to the millennium physical destruction on a gigantic scale. Much comment at the time was expended on the laser obliteration of the White House (an early shot from the Tea Party/Maga crowd?), but I personally cherish director Roland Emmerichs signature move of detonating cars in somersault formation. Like many other huge-budget films then and since, Independence Day was basically a tooled-up retread of cheap-as-chips format of earlier decades though who these days would roll such expensive dice on what is essentially an original script, with no comic book or toy branding as a forerunner? We shall never see its like again. AP

Aliens (1986)

An Aliens summer is one for moviegoers who prefer to sit in in darkened rooms when the sun is shining; the brutal confines of the fiery power plant make an excellent subliminal ad for air conditioning. In 1986, James Cameron took Ridley Scotts elegant, iconic horror template and turned it into an all-out action blockbuster, forcing Ripley once again to face down her nemeses in a breathless fug of claustrophobia, sweat and fear. Its relentlessly stressful and unbelievably thrilling.

I first saw Aliens many years after its initial release. Owing to its sizeable and long-lasting legacy, it was at once immediately familiar, yet also brisk and brutally fresh. I understood that it was a classic, but I wasnt prepared for just how good it is, for the pitch-perfect management of tension, the pace that never really lets up, the emotional pull. The maternal undertow of Ripleys protection of Newt, and the alien mirror of that, adds a level of heart unusual in most blockbusters, and her frustration at being a woman whose authority must be earned again and again, and then proven again and again, remains grimly relevant, 30 years on. Its also a total blast. Now get away from her, you bitch. RN

Jaws (1975)

It is the great summer blockbuster ancestor the film that in 1975 more or less invented the concept of the event movie. And unlike all those other summer blockbusters, Steven Spielbergs Jaws is actually about the summer; it is explicitly about the institution of the summer vacation, into which the movie was being sold as part of the seasonal entertainment. It is about the sun, the sand, the beach, the ocean and the entirely justified fear of being eaten alive by an enormous shark with the appetite of a serial killer and the cunning of a U-boat commander. And more than that: it is about that most contemporary of political phenomena: the coverup, the town authorities at a seaside resort putting vacationers at risk by not warning them about the shark. The Jaws mayor has become comic shorthand for the craven and pusillanimous politician.

A blockbuster nowadays means spectacular digital effects, but this film is from an analogue world. It bust the block through brilliant film-making and an inspired score from John Williams, summoning up the shark with a simple two-note theme which became the most famous musical expression of evil since Bernard Herrmanns shrieking violin stabs in Psycho took the place of actual knife-slashing. I still remember the excitement of the summer of 1975, and the queues around the block at the Empire, in Watford, round the corner from the football ground. The inspired brevity of the title meant the word was repeated over and over again to fill the marquee display: JAWS JAWS JAWS as if they were screaming it! PB

School with the MAGCON boys pt 1

hey im Zahra. im 15 born and brought up in London, England. my father travels alot for work which means i have to go with him, my mother isnt here with me anymore she died while giving birth to me but ive learnt to stop thinking bout her as much...im proud of my father, although i may have been an accident he doesn't treat me like one, he treats me amazingly he’s been there for me through thick and thin, hes taught me so much and when we’re traveling from country to country ive been enrolled in so many classes, including self defense classes to help myself become a stronger female as a whole. I have the grades of a high level collage students so im basically never behind on my studies. my father had me at age 17 with my mum who was 16 at the time, they had the most beautiful love story yet so real, my father a man of his word, a gentleman he charmed my mother and they had me. after i was born my father didnt know what to do so i lived with my grandparents most of my life seeing my father come home from school tired but he always smiled when he saw me.

more on school. I was moving to a highschool in Chicago,i was looking forward to it but i felt that i would be very left out, i was the dork. my hair was black, long, thick and wavy with a few red highlights, my eyes were dark and my lashes were long. i had a very petite body, tiny waist and small hips. i was a decent height only 5′7ft one could cal me innocent and i agree its ture heck i haven't even had my first kiss yet!

the school i went to was more of a local school with the usual crownds from what i could tell. There were the Jocks, popular bitchy girls, the nerds, emo’s and the “freaks”. i walk in with my Dad i wore blue jeans, a white top, bomber jacket, white vans, a small hand bag and my huge geeky glasses. i didnt wear much make up just a bit of eyeliner and highlighter. We were given a tour of the school, it wasnt that big but i knew i was still gonna get lost.

i get to my first lesson late. as always. I knock on the door and enter. “oh, and who must you be sweetie?” said the teacher at the front.

“hello, im Zahra im new here.” i say, my British accent standing out.

“ok hunny! go have a seat and ill be right with you im Miss Dina,”

I Nod and take a seat at the back. that was the only available seat. i adjust my glasses and get a pen, pencil and ruler out of my bag. i look around realizing there were a few familiar faces. That’s when it hit me, i realized there were a few viners here, Matthew Espinosa, Jack J and Shawn Mendes. i look to my left and felt a tingly sensation in my stomach as i took a closer look at who sat right beside me. Nash Grier. OMFG i felt really shy but then i snapped out of my shock and returned to what the teacher was saying.”Now Class who can Name the three enzymes needed for digestion along with their uses?”

my hand shot right up in the air without me thinking. “Yes Zahra?”

“the first enzyme is Carbohydrase this breaks down starch and sugar, the second is Protease this breaks down proteins and lastly is lipase this breaks downs Fats and Lipids.”

“Excellent!”

i felt everyone’s eyes piercing at me i could feel my face slowly becoming a tomato. i felt really panicky and queasy, my panic attacks were bad but i didnt need one now of all times, ive barley been in the classroom 20 mins. i started to lower my adrenaline levels and i slowly returned to my normal state. I was given an exercise book to write in but i didnt need it. my grades were amazing and i already knew all of this. but i still wrote as much as i could. it was about 5 mins until the lesson was over so i started packing my things up.i reaching my bag and looked at my planner, it was a small planner but it was sentimental to me it had pictures of me and my classmates in France, Germany, Beijing and Poland. I missed them but i cant get attached to people too quickly. its not good for me at all. I flip through the pages to see if i had any empty time slots that’s when i saw a particular name pop up (my dad writes stuff in here to keep me on track) says the Jhonson family are coming for a meeting. i mean it was cool but i was praying that it wasn’t the family of the person who i think it is. I her my pencil drop on the floor and i lean under the table to look for it. “uh.. here.” i look up and Nash was holding the pencil. i take it from him and put it in my bag. “Thanks...”

“So your british?”

“yeah. well i havn’t seen London in 6 years...” I reply.

“ what do you mean?” he asked me.

“I Travel alot, so i go to a few different schools in different countries, but im usually home schooled if my dad is free.”

the bell rings and our class was dismissed. I head out of the classroom and start walking through the hallway, i see a crowd of guys. i push through them minding my own business before i hear a few murmers. “Thats the new chick!” another voice said “Damn she looks finee” i hear another say “She’s probably a hoe” i feel anger build up inside me waiting to be released. but i just keep walking faster and faster.

----Later----

It’s lunch time and im alone. So much for being socially awkward. I had a lunch packed in my bag, Salad and water along with a small can of pringles. i look for somewhere to sit but everywhere was taken... i felt like shit but then again Having no one to leave is better than having a ton of friends who ill have to say goodbye to. I feel a light tap on my shoulder i turn around and see a girl she looked a little older than me but definitely around 16 or 17. she had curly hair and freckles.”Hey! I haven’t seen you around are you new..?” she says with a bit of cheer in her voice. “Why yes im Zahra, and you are?” i ask her. “My name is Mahogany LOX im 16 you ca Call me LOX, your accent is adorable!!”she squeals. “Thanks...” i say. “come sit with me and Shawn.”

I followed her to a table where she sat down next to Shawn. she introduced me to him and we all were like bestfriends.. the vibes they were giving out were so warm and positive. I talked to them about life and school and about who i am and what i like to do. i felt like i could talk to them for hours. We ended up swapping numbers at the end of lunch. my last lesson of the day was calculus which meant more stuff i already knew.

----end of the day----

it seemed like Mahogany and Shawn got along with everyone but i seemed to be the awkward one. i was walking out to the parking lot of the school when im approached by Jack G. “Hello there...”

“Uh.. hi?” i say

“So you wanna met up some time late and go to my place?” he says with an arrogant tone.

“Sorry im not Netflix and chill sessions and by the way i dont think im gonna let you into my pants that quickly.” I say.

he attempts to put his arms aroung my waist before my fighting instincts kick in and i grab his hand and twist it. he shrieked in pain and moved aside.

“So i see your playing hard to get...” he says with a little bit of annoyance in his voice.

“No i just dont fall for fuckboys like you.” i walk to my bike and cycle home.

i get home and put my helmet on a little table by the front door. “PaPa are you home?!” i shout across the house.

“im in the kitchen hunny! go put something nice on we have guests coming over!” My dad says.

“Ok dad but promise me you wont bring up anything to do with my grades” i say.

“how can i not when i have such an amazing daugher?” he asks.

“whatever dad im going upstairs see ya in 5 mins”

i run up to my room and look through my cupboard. i choose a pastel blue dress with a pair of black tights and i put my hair up in a pony tail leaving my fringe out.. i run downstairs and join my dadin the kitchen. i sit on a chair and watch him cook. “so how was your first day?” he asks.

“a bit awkward at first but actually pretty good. and i made two friends.” i say with a little grin on my face.

“Any boys?” he asks with a bit of sarcasm in his tone.

“Dad if there were i would’ve told you, but as i said for the millionth time, guys aren’t into me im ugly.” my cheer went down and he turned around and hugged me.

“my beautiful girl is growing up thinking she’s ugly? im a terrible father!!!”

“No papa your an amazing dad!”

“My baby girl is growing up... i will always love you. you look just like your mother. you know that right?” i see his eyes glisten with tears.

“I know dad... i know. now dont cry otherwise im gonna get emotional!” i say trying to put a little bit of humor into the situation.

“Well i thnk ive passed on the wrong genes. have fun dealing with being an emotional wreck.” i see him smiling and i giggle.

the door bell rings and i run to answer the door and i see a woman with a smile on her face standing there holding the hand of who i presume was her husband, and right there i saw...Jack.

“Mr and Mrs Jhonson?” i plastered a fake smile and shook their hands. my dad came from no where and escorted them to the dining room. I walk tot the dining room and get my phone out before my dad starts speaking. “This is my daughter Zahra shes just been enrolled iin our local Highschool.”

“She’s in my biology class” Says Jack.

i look up and look back down at my phone and start texting Mahogany.but no reply. i go up to my room and sit downon the windowsill as i watch the clouds slowly shift out of sight. i sit there for about 20 min until i hear knocking on the door.i walk over to the door and open it. “Hey..” jack said leaning on the door frame.

“What do you want?” i say slightly annoyed.

“just wanna chill...” he says trying to act cool.

“Well i have better things to do and besides do you really wanna end up like your friend or worse?” i say slamming the door.

Finally they’re gone and now i can return to my normal life. i get ready for bed and put on my “more revealing” night wear on. i fall asleep at 9:30 setting alarm for 6:30.
