2/4/2024-2/18/2024 Progress Update
I just wanted to go ahead and get a head start on the next progress update. These past few weeks had a lot of interesting things. Firstly I started and finished most of my script for the project. I have the beginning and ending fully fleshed out, at least how I want it. My hurdle is in the middle, how I’m going to connect the two parts together. This is where I will be using ChatGPT as a virtual assistant. I will explain to it what I have already, and ask for ideas on where I can take the story from there. My goal is to not have it write specific scenes, but to at least give me scenarios in which I can apply to the script myself.
For context, my short film will be styled in an old Japanese samurai film, but with futuristic elements to it.
I already used ChatGPT to come up with names for my characters by describing their personalities and the nature of my script. The responses it gave me, and the reasoning behind the names turned out really great.
Alongside starting the script, I have also been practicing more with the AI tools. This time, instead of doing something unrelated to the project I built out a scene from my script, which I’ll link below.
I filmed the ship practically, once again using a model that I found on Amazon. I combined it with the use of 4 AI tools; Midjourney, Pixverse, Color Match.Ai, and Suno.ai.
I created the background using Midjourney, something I went over in my previous progress update. The shot I came up with is a top-down shot of a forest. From there I threw it into Pixverse, a free AI website that adds movement to photos using depth mapping (something I also went over in my previous update). The result was great but the final result was only 8 seconds long, so I slowed it down in premiere. It’s longer, but the movement in the image is now less noticeable.
Shooting the model practically ended up being a bit rough. Firstly, propping the camera to be above the model (whether actually placed above the model, or turning the model on its side) proved to be a hassle. C-stands would have fixed this issue, but the ones I ordered prior to the new year still never to shipped.
I used to own a slider but the person I lent it to has not returned it. A lesson for the future about loaning out equipment. To work around this, I Jerry-rigged a dolly to a tray so I can pull the model and the green screen.
The results came out clunky and rotoscoping in After Effects started to get rough with the finer details, so I ended up freeze framing it in premiere, and adding the motion manually through key frames.
Colormatch.ai is a software I invested in a few years back, it works by importing a still image of something with color grading you’d like to try out, and it exports a similar result for use in your own projects. Since one of the inspirations to my project is Akira Kurosawa, I wanted to replicate the black and white methods used.
But why use this instead of just pulling the saturation down? One thing about Kurosawa’s stuff I’ve noticed is the halation and sharp contrast that his films have. I wanted to try and replicate that as best as I could. The end results weren’t perfect but it’s a good starting point.
Suno.ai is similar to Midjourney, but for generating non-copyrighted music. The results aren’t perfect and there’s a lot of artifacting in the songs, but for something that matches my theme I think it turned out quite alright for now.
To solidify the scene, I added some fog effects and speed-ramped it as the ship flies by.
In the end, I came up with this result after about 2-3 hours of messing around to see what works, and about an hour and a half of execution on a “final”product. As I near further into my production I hope to flesh it out even more.
I hope by the end of the next update, I will have finished the script, storyboard, and shot list.
After that, I will be looking to translate my script into Japanese for authenticity. Then I’ll be onto looking for talent and possibly crew to help me out.
I know I promised a breakdown on EBSynth, and I promise I’ll get that out soon!
Until then, here is the scene that I have created while testing everything out. It’s short but hopefully by the end of it all will be a part of a greater scene.

Editor’s update: The Economist has published a revised version of its style guide.
The first words are the hardest. For many of us writing is a slog. Words drip with difficulty onto the page—and frequently they seem to be the wrong ones, in the wrong order. Yet few pause to ask why writing is hard, why what we write may be bad, or even what is meant by “bad”. Fortunately for anyone seeking to become a better writer, the works recommended here provide enlightenment and reassurance. Yes, writing is hard. But if you can first grasp the origins and qualities of bad writing, you may learn to diagnose and cure problems in your own prose (keeping things simple helps a lot). Similarly heartening is the observation that most first drafts are second-rate, so becoming a skilled rewriter is the thing. These five works are excellent sources of insight and inspiration.
Politics and the English Language. By George Orwell. Available on the Orwell Foundation’s website
Starting with Orwell’s essay may seem as clichéd as the hackneyed phrases he derides in it. Published in 1946, this polemic against poor and perfidious writing will be familiar to many. But its advice on how to write is as apposite now as then. (Besides, it is short and free.) Orwell analyses the unoriginal, “dying” metaphors that still haunt the prose of academics, politicians, professionals and hacks. He lambasts the “meaningless words” and “pretentious diction” of his day; many of the horrors he cites remain common. To save writers from regurgitating these, Orwell proposes six now-canonical rules. The first five boil down to: prefer short, everyday words and the active voice, cut unneeded words and strive for fresh imagery. The sixth—“break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous”—displays the difficulty of pinning down something as protean as language. But this has not stopped others trying.
Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace. By Joseph M. Williams and Joseph Bizup. Pearson Education; 246 pages; $66.65 and £43.99
In “Style”, Joseph Williams, who taught English at the University of Chicago, instructs writers on how to revise their scribblings into something clearer, more concise and coherent. (Aptly for a text about rewriting, it is the latest in a long line of reworkings of Williams’s teachings on the subject, which appeared under various titles.) Unlike Orwell, who devised high-level rules for writers to wield by instinct, Williams proposes nuanced “principles” and shows how to apply them. Whereas, for instance, Orwell exhorted writers to “never use the passive where you can use the active”, Williams explains how passives can sometimes help create a sense of flow. This forms part of his coverage of “cohesion” and “coherence”, which could upend the way you write. Insightful, too, is Williams’s guidance on pruning prose and on the ills and virtues of nominalisations—nouns formed from verbs (as “nominalisation” is from “nominalise”), which often send sentences awry. Such technical details, summary sections and practice exercises make “Style” the most textbook-like work on this list. It may also be the most useful.

On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction. By William Zinsser. HarperCollins; 321 pages; $17.99 and £13.99
Less overtly practical than “Style” but far more fun to read is “On Writing Well”. William Zinsser, who was an American journalist and teacher, is a witty commentator on the writer’s craft with a talent for aphorisms (eg, “the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components”). He embraces slippery subjects like “rhythm” and “voice” that tend to defy rules or principles. But he purveys practical wisdom, too, diagnosing stylistic blunders, exploring genres from memoir to business writing, and analysing passages from well-known works and his own journalism. Zinsser is always encouraging. Introducing a marked-up extract from drafts of “On Writing Well”, a spider’s web of self-edits, he counsels: “Very few sentences come out right the first time, or even the third time. Remember this in moments of despair.” Zinsser also gives fellow writers much to emulate. His paragraph-ending sentences are a marvel.
The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century. By Steven Pinker. Penguin; 368 pages; and $18 and £10.99
An expert on words and brains, Steven Pinker wants to help writers write better by getting them into the minds of their readers. The celebrated psycholinguist argues that “the curse of knowledge” is the biggest cause of bad writing: like children, writers forget that others often do not know what they know. Bad writers tend to dwell on irrelevant points and make logical connections that are logical only to them. Their prose—the type beloved of academics, bureaucrats and businessfolk—abounds in abstract nouns and luxuriates in long sentences. By contrast, good writing (“classic style”, in Mr Pinker’s phrase) assembles concrete words into straightforward sentences that readers find simple to grasp. Why should this be so? Using striking and funny examples, Mr Pinker shows how working memory, which stores syntactic constructions until they are complete, is easily swamped. In closing, he joins the battle over English usage, as our full review of “The Sense of Style” describes.
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage. Merriam-Webster; 989 pages; $29.95
Every writer needs a reference book to look up troublesome issues of grammar and usage; no one has memorised them all. The quality of such books has improved in recent years, but one from the 1990s has earned its keep since then. Merriam-Webster (mwdeu) is America’s best-known dictionary publisher. This guide contains not exactly definitions, though, but mini-essays: on individual words (can “data” be singular?), confusingly similar ones (such as “comprise” and “compose”) and grammatical conundrums (such as the split infinitive, dangling modifiers and so on).
What distinguishes mwdeu is its relentless empiricism. Where a debatable claim about correct usage is made, it surveys the history of other guides and their recommendations, as well as going to Merriam-Webster’s huge bank of citations from literature, non-fiction and journalism. In many cases, a proposed rule (such as the ban on split infinitives) is shown to be baseless. But in other cases, the guide is conservative. On the “comma fault” (joining two independent clauses with nothing more than a comma), mwdeu finds it in some great authors’ literary work, but warns readers that “you probably should not try the device unless you are very sure of what you want it to accomplish.” Good sense all round.■
_______________
The Economist offers its own advice on writing in “Writing With Style”, our revised in-house style guide, published in 2023; in the Johnson column on language; and in Economist Education’s course on business writing.
Free tools can help. To discover whether your writing is “lean” or in “heart attack” territory, try The Writer’s Diet. This website tests how bloated passages are by adjectives, prepositions and so on. Or paste your prose into the oed Text Visualiser, from Oxford University Press, to uncover the origins of your words. Many of English’s most concrete and vivid words derive from Anglo-Saxon. These tend also to be short and punchy—echoing Winston Churchill, The Economist once argued (entirely in monosyllables) that “short words are best”.

My current thoughts on Sonic Frontiers
Tumblr media
With the unstoppable courage Get a fire pow- Oh wait, wrong Frontier.
So, almost a week ago we got a new trailer for Sonic Frontiers and...my thoughts are pretty mixed, so I’ll just get out of the way what I thought of the trailer itself.
To be frank, I actually loved it! My main critique is the obvious lack of gameplay, which is a red flag considering SEGA’s own confidence in the project. I think it can’t be stressed enough the fact that by this point we SHOULD have some footage of actual gameplay, granted what we say wasn’t all CGI but we shouldn’t have to wait more to see how Sonic plays in this game. I just hope that SEGA is indeed doing this for the sake of giving a surprise to the audience instead of more unfortunate reasons like a lack of confidence or progress.
About the aesthetic itself...if I’m honest, I wanted a less cartoony and whimsical Sonic game for a long time, however I have to point out that the enviroment is guilty of suffering of the ‘’Sonic on Unreal Engine 4 Fan Game’’ syndrome, since at first glance it looks generic and unremarkable. However, I also saw some interesting bits that makes me hope this new enviroment will have a chance to stand out on its own during gameplay. I am aware of the BotW comparisons but let’s be honest, that game was a big hit and it’s impact on other open world games is to be expected, so I don’t see the point in calling this a BotW rip-off. From my perspective at least, it’s like calling a Metroidvania a rip-off of Super Metroid or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night...when it has become a standard for games in the genre to use those titles as reference because of the impact they made.
Now here’s the interesting part...the story.
This post might get outdated in days because apparently the plot summaries we got are inaccurate, but I’m still going to give my two scents on what we actually have to work with.
So far the premise we got of the story is that Eggman discovers an ancient technology, installs an AI program to hack it and then it turns out this gets out of his control and now Sonic has to save the day.
I’m going to be frank here...
This premise is absolute garbage.
I’m not usually the one to jump to negative conclusions regarding Sonic, and anyone who follows my blog knows that, but I’m also not going to pretend this is fine and I will quickly explain why.
The reason this premise is so bad is because its yet ANOTHER plot of ‘’Oh, Eggman awakens an ancient monster but he gets upstaged because he can’t control it’’ and to be frank, I don’t even want to give it the benefit of the doubt because this trend should have stayed dead, period. We already have 10 games with this shitty ‘’Eggman gets fucked up’’ plotline, so why do it AGAIN, specially when the post-2010 games, in spite of all their flaws, have moved on from this?
I’m just gonna ask a simple question to illustrate how pointless this trend is.
Why shouldn’t this franchise have new antagonist who don’t need to upstage Eggman to stand out?
I repeat
Why shouldn’t this franchise have new antagonist who don’t need to upstage Eggman to stand out?
And it’s not like they never did this before, the Storybook games had Erazor Djinn and Merlina and it turns out they’re more memorable than the majority of generic villains this series has that had to upstage Eggman to prove their worth.
In fact, with this premise I can be sure that the antagonist is going to have the personality of a cardboard box and I can assure Eggman is going to get upstaged in a stupid way.
Besides, it’s been apparently confirmed that Ian Flynn is writing the script of the game. I know that there are a lot of folks hyped for this but to be honest, Ian shouldn’t be writing for the games since he has proven to be unreliable with his hijinks in the comics, particularly his superficial understanding of the characters and his habit of bending characterization for the sake of plot convenience.
The fact that the Metal Virus arc in the comics ended up with Eggman being upstaged to ‘’raise the stakes’’ is part of the reason I’m sure Flynn will play the premise of ‘’Eggman fucks up because plot needs new villain’’ painfully straight.
I know someone will inevitably say
‘‘But Flynn is better than Pontaff!’‘
And yes, he is...but here’s the big question. Is that enough?
Because really, Pontaff didn’t set the bar high to begin with, and Flynn has more than a decade under his belt repeating the same writing mistakes, to the point that the recent Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia is filled with errors regarding continuity and game events...and if we speculate that Ian probably did this on purpose to fit his headcanons into the canon, then it’s even worse. I find it very ironic that the fandom preaches about not accepting mediocrity in Sonic, and yet it lowered its standards so much that they’re happy to have consistently mediocre writing because ‘’It’s better than Pontaff’’. If the characters are going to be bent whenever the writer sees it fit, then Pontaff and Flynn are interchangable, the only difference is that the later’s writing pretends better to be IC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Am I really supposed to be hyped about the games’ writing resembling this in the future?
Please bring Maekawa or Nishiyama back instead.
On a side note, Ian writing for the games also worries me in the long run because it means that now he has a more direct influence on the canon, and considering what I just mentioned that’s far from a good thing. Because if Ian doesn’t care about bending the canon if it suits whatever he’s writing at the moment, the results will be incosistencies that will slowly but surely pile on each other until it becomes obvious and I certainly don’t like the sound of that.
I know I’ve been pretty harsh with Ian Flynn but really, I’m just tired of his influence on the franchise as of late. And regardless of the fact that I’m tired of Sonic having western writing, I would be more open minded if not only Ian actually tried to improve from his trademark writing mistakes, but also if his fans stopped excusing every controversial take or writing choice he does, specially considering that apparently he can only do wrong when SEGA is involved according to them.
I don’t think he’s a bad writer per se, but I would definitely take anyone else over him to write for the actual canon games.
Anyway, I hope the actual plot of this game is not another Eggman getting upstaged story, but if it turns out only minor details revealed to us were innacurate, then my grievances still stand. I just hope Frontiers at the very least turns out to be a good enough game to make up for the potential problems its writing might have.

This is an issue that my Cleveland-based marketing company, PR 20/20, encountered a couple of years back. As part of our procedure, we create monthly performance reports for each of our customers. When we create them, we pull the information from HubSpot and Google Analytics. Then, we write a report to explain the data to our colleagues, clients, and job stakeholders.
However, although they were helping our customers, creating them was holding our team back. While our clients found the reports valuable, the procedure of pulling the data, evaluating it, and drafting the reports easily took 5 hours per client, monthly. This took our marketers far from jobs that could have been efficient in the long run, such as brainstorming originalities and methods that could significantly help their customers.

After learning more about how AI had already structured dozens of marketing-related processes, we chose to explore how automation and artificial intelligence might help us with our clients at PR 20/20. We became obsessed with how smarter innovation might increase profits and reduce costs. In the process, we discovered natural language generation (NLG) innovation that wrote plain English automatically.
You have actually come across NLG anytime you have actually utilized Gmail's Smart Compose feature. Or, when you hear Amazon's Alexa respond to your voice questions. Once we discovered a potentially useful NLG software application, we decided to run an experiment to see if the AI innovation could partially or totally automate our performance report writing procedure.

Now, the next action is to search for software that works for your company. Here are a few things you'll need to think about: You'll wish to consider the expense of any of the software application's subscriptions or charges, along with the expense to implement it. Make certain to comprehend what you'll require to do if something isn't working properly so you do not sustain any emergency situation costs. As a marketer, you won't wish to count on a full-time engineer to use AI software application to run your reports. This will give you a concept of if the item you're considering has a great performance history or credibility in the AI software market.
Here are two highly-regarded examples: Domo is an information visualization and reporting tool that integrates with significant data and analytics platforms consisting of Google Analytics. The software application needed structured information in columns and rows to create text. So, first, we had to pull HubSpot and Google Analytics information into spreadsheets. Because doing this manually would take too much time and restrict the potential time saved with automation, we used APIs and built our own algorithm using Google Apps Scripts to pull information into a Google Sheet.
We understood NLG software would be unlikely to handle entirely custom-made reports well. So, we developed a design template for these reports that didn't alter monthly. To produce a format for each report, we identified a set of 12 typical concerns we were attempting to address for customers monthly: How much traffic pertained to your website, and how does that compare to the previous month? Last year? How engaged was last month's website traffic? What were the leading traffic-driving channels? Existed fluctuation in overall traffic, and if so, what caused it? How did the blog perform last month? How engaged was blog traffic? What were the top-performing article? Were there any modifications in blog traffic last month, and if so, what caused them? The number of objectives or brand-new contacts were created last month? What were the top converting pages? Where did objectives or new contacts come from? Existed any change in total goals or lead volume, and if so, what was accountable? A good AI software application will either permit you to create documents or perhaps control panels, as your reports.

As soon as we 'd structured our data and developed a basic report format, we needed to translate our basic report format into an NLG template. The design template was essentially a finished version of an efficiency report. When the NLG software runs, this report gets copied into the NLG software application. Then guidelines are applied to the copy to programmatically update what's written based on the structured information provided.

Although our team has the ability to access AI suppliers and experts for our in-office experiments, other small company marketers can also make the most of this technique somewhat affordably. Painting with Brushstrokes of Code
An art as old as computers themselves, programming has spiked in recent years following the creation of countless new languages, each one with more specific uses than the other. These languages make up the bedrock of computer science. However, a language is nothing but words and letters without its speaker. In the same way, programming languages are little more than aimless lines and numbers without a programmer. Even so, the programmers who use these languages - Java, Python, C++ - to create programs and software rarely get as much recognition as the languages themselves. So, what does the life of a programmer, a true scholar of computer science, look like?
To answer that question, we met with John; a young programmer stationed in L.A., who agreed to tell us a little about his experience in the world of bits and bytes.
“[…] I always loved computers. When I was a kid, I made a lot of mods and crap; they were really bad, but everyone’s first attempt at anything is bad.”
Ever since he was young, technology called to John like a siren’s song. His journey into the life of a programmer started with video games, through mods and developer consoles. However, it wasn’t until high school that he got really into programming after taking an Intro to Java class.
John would then go on to study programming in college with a focus on software development, and that would in time jump-start the series of events which have led him to where he is today.
“Programming isn’t fun all the time, but I like sitting by myself and just typing up a script and seeing what I can do with it.”
The work of a programmer is by no means all fun and games. A single program that appears simple on the outside may require many sleepless nights and empty coffee pots to run properly, and success is rarely a given regardless of a programmer’s experience.
Despite the struggles that come with programming, however, John’s passion for his work shows no signs of abating, and understandably so.
I can tell you from experience, no matter how many times you do it, the joy of writing some dozen lines of code and watching them transform into a program never really goes away.
Still, getting where he is now hasn’t been smooth sailing for John. Circumstances in his personal life caused him to leave Ohio, which in turn forced him to drop out of university. He move to Los Angeles with his aunt and uncle, where he tried to apply for a different university, but to no avail. So, with what knowledge he had, he started working as a freelancer.
Still, that wasn’t the end for John. Some time after his move to L.A., a chance encounter with an extraordinary man would turn John’s luck around. With the man’s guidance and the support of his aunt and uncle, John directed his energy towards his second greatest passion, and the very thing that led him down this path in the first place; video games.
“The thing I’ve always wanted to do the most was design software, […] but I never got that chance, so I’m happy with settling with my second favorite thing: games.”
Currently, John is working on an indie action horror rpg, inspired in equal parts by his life and his imagination. The main concept is classified and unavailable to the public, but we were allowed a sneak peak and let me tell you, I would definitely sign up as an Alpha tester if I had the time.
John has undertaken the project by himself, and is currently looking for additional help with AI programming and graphics and model design. We have put up an advertisement on the Night Owl magazine as well as our official blog, which you can find at lorem-text.tumblr.com.
There is a long way to go until the game is released, and the launch date for the Beta is as of yet unknown, but we are hoping for an update on the game’s progress sometime within the year.
Finally, we asked John what advice he would give to aspiring programmers and software developments, to which he replied with this:
“Don’t lose your passion for it. It’ll get boring, it might seem helpless, but you can do amazing [things] and you should keep working at it! […] Don’t give up EVER and don’t forget how to have fun.”
An inspiring piece of advice that’s applicable to all walks of life and has undoubtedly followed John throug his life thus far
Overall, John is a brilliant young man whose passion infects and inspires those around him much like it has us and we hope to see much more from him in the coming years.

“How to write better code?” asked a computer scientist-to-be
This is a question that I get once every 2 weeks (on average) mostly from my colleagues and friends who are studying the same degree for the same time as I. Why do they ask me? To be honest- I don’t know. What I also don’t know is the answer to their question. But I’d try to summarize what I think of the question. The answer to this question depends on many factors. If the questioner is a computer science major, I’d see what year they are in. Here’s my year to year advice to them:
- Freshman year: Coding at first is really intimidating. Its given that you’d spend hours in front of your screen to find that one line that does not compile. Here, you should remain patient and learn to accept that this problem demands a finite amount of time and focused concentration to overcome. Using online sources like stack overflow and GitHub are great options but never a first step if you want to become a decent coder. Go line by line and figure out what’s happening and whether it’s the right behavior. Freshman year includes a lot of programming labs, projects and assignments. Try to do all of them and start well before your deadline (seriously). Make it a habit to write a small program everyday. Could be a simple program to add two numbers or anything of that sort. Do some string operation or something. This would not only improve your algorithmic thinking, but also would polish the syntax of the language you code in. Like everything else in the world, mastery comes after practice. So hang in tight!
-Sophomore year: By now you have some experience of the life cycle of a typical program: understand the problem statement, do it on paper the way a human would do, do it on paper the way a computer would do, translate the latter to the programming language in question, debug. Now you also know some basics of computer science through some programming courses and maybe a few systems courses as well. The scope of your programming assignments should not be higher than maybe some array based tasks or implementing a few data structures like linked lists and binary trees to name a few. I’m assuming that you are completing your programming assignments religiously. If not, you really should be doing that before putting in extra work to improve your coding. I’ve seen people depending/copying on other people’s work even in individual assignments. While some might get away from plagiarism penalties and policies of your university, others face some sort of penalty (could be a grade reduction or something of that sort). While the latter might learn a lesson, the former fails to develop their skills and ultimately suffers in their professional life. So leaching on a friend is never a good option, well not in the long term. Try to do it even if you’re finding it hard. Take help from your teaching assistants and the rest of the course staff. You need to realize that these people are paid to help you. So please utilize office hours and appointments to the fullest. Doing extra always helps like attempting optional parts or the ones that give extra credits. Do some interesting problems and coding puzzles like the ones on hackerrank and leetcode. These are some excellent resources to polish up your skills as a developer and problem solver because they include some obvious metrics like completion, correctness and time. Have a study group where you can discuss your assignments and homeworks. There’s a difference between discussing and copying/leaching off. Mind that difference.
-Junior year: This is when you’re comfortable with programming in general. You know how it can be applied in a array of different tasks. You might have taken some old school courses like algorithms, databases and operating systems. PS I’m counting data structures as a programming intensive course and did not give it a special mention in the sophomore section :(. Go for some interesting courses like a networks course, AI/ ML or maybe some usability course. These courses will help you appreciate how you just cannot run away from programming. You’ll learn new approaches like socket programming and programming over a network (maybe some Remote Procedure Calls?). Go for some interesting applications. I remember developing a simple chatting application over a network during my junior year. I hosted it on the university’s network and anyone on the network could use it (if they knew the ip, obviously). I not only developed it, but also made it resistant to buffer overflows and scripting attacks(XSS) thanks to my roommate cum penetration tester. Once done with your Databases course, you can go for a full stack level by learning some server side and client side scripting. Learn some server based frameworks in javascript or anything. Look for some widely used frameworks; the ones which have a wider developer community. The community support will help you a lot, trust me. Some front end frameworks (client side) like ReactJS and VueJS are great these days. You can learn them using some MOOCS if your university doesn’t offer a course on them. Personally, Coursera is a great resource. Its super easy to use and has great customer care. Their “Full-Stack Web Development with React Specialization” offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is great. Once done you are fully capable to work as a full stack developer and the only thing stopping you is an internship offer from a company and time to practice. The latter can be achieved on your own, while the prior needs some homework and external networking. Connect to some local organization and CEOs on LinkedIn. Make sure you have a well maintained and updated LinkedIn profile and turn on recruiter discoveries to get recruiter in-mails. Be on the lookout for internship offerings and openings. Apply whenever you get a chance. Working on an organization’s project will help you learn a lot. It will not only improve your coding and problem solving stills, but also make you realize how important it is to work in teams. The latter is crucial to success in the industry since a project has multiple groups composed of many individuals. Be sure to take up work that is doable within the deadline. Keep a good relation with your supervisor and always ask for specific direction to get it right the first time.
Senior year: This has to be the most confusing year in-terms of future planning since graduation is approaching and life after is somewhat uncertain. Don’t let this fear of the uncertain get to you. My advice might not be very concrete because I, myself, am a senior while writing this. But I’ll try to incorporate my learning and findings here. The first question you might want to answer is whether coding is for you. This question is not presented before because there wasn’t an escape from it earlier because you had assignments that required you to code. Now that you can take up courses that need minimal programming effort like human-computer interaction and usability/planning courses you have a way out. These include courses like requirement engineering and planning. There are other examples as well which aren’t difficult to find. The answer to the question posed would not be a yes unless you completely love programming, in which case you’re on the right track. Loving programming is different from being good at it. You might love it and be bad at it and that’s completely fine in which case you should multiply your efforts to get better at it. Again, practice is the key. Try out programming courses on Coursera or some other platform. Get a github for student account. You’ll get it for free if you have an email account provided by your university. I’d like to make a special mention to Educative.io which offers a plethora of courses for free if you have a github for students. Educative.io is user friendly and keeps good track of your progress through the course. It is run by a very dedicated team. I personally know people working there who write articles and make courses. Almost all of them have worked as teaching assistants during their time at the university and most certainly know what they are doing and there work reflects their capabilites. They have some amazing courses. Do check it out if you have a github for students account. You’d also get free access to paid tools like AWS, Azure, DigitalOcean and Heroku. If the answer to the question is no, then you need to research more on courses and fields in computer science that do not require intense programming. These 3 years will definitely equip you with the skills that you need to do “some” coding that these fields demand. There wont be much but not zero at the same time. If you are still undecided about the question, you really should invest time knowing an answer. Ask your professors for help. Tell them honestly what you feel and why you can’t make a decision considering that you’ve spent considerable time doing it. They might guide you to a definitive answer. And then continue according to the answer. Now’s also a good time to look into industry’s standards and best practices. Maybe learn a new language? Or try using mainstream tools and familiarize yourself with devOps. Some of them are Docker, Jenkins, Slack, Jira, Git and many more, each with a set of its own unique features. Their knowledge and use will help you once you land a job because most organizations use them on a daily basis. Try some cloud computing platforms like the Amazon web services, Microsoft’s Azure and Google’s Cloud Platform. These platforms offer an array of services like storage, hosting and compute. Familiarize yourself with their usage because they usually have a learning curve. Do a lot of hobby coding. Try different approaches to a problem. For example I was going through geekforgeeks and came across an interesting problem which had a greedy solution and required an LCM (Least Common Multiple) of two numbers. The author had used a builtin function for computing it. I wondered if I could write it recursively. I decomposed the problem and found an optimal substructure which proved that a recursive solution should exist. I worked on it and wrote it and it worked. It was a mere 10 liner. Practice like the one mentioned will help you develop confidence while improving your coding skills. So practice writing code even if its not that intensive and long and hopefully you’ll see improvement.
This concludes my very first attempt that writing. I plan to write more and post here often. I’m eager to get feedback and comments. Here’s my LinkedIn profile. I really hope this helps the reader. Thank you for reading

Post-petroleum futures
Several months ago Crap Futures gave a talk at the Center for Contemporary Theory (3CT) at the University of Chicago. The theme provided some good inspiration for new thinking on the state of design. Now, at the dawn of the new decade, we’ve finally got around to sharing some of these thoughts in blog form, many cups of coffee and plates of toast later.
For obvious reasons, there are many discussions at the moment asking: ‘What comes after petroleum?’ Before getting into this, it might be helpful to better understand the promise of petrol – what were the origins of petroleum utopias? Who was responsible for them? And what agendas were hidden behind the progressivist imaginaries?
So, starting with petroleum (and related materials): this naturally occurring liquid is essentially a battery, which stores a fragment of the solar energy that reached the earth during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (typically via algae and woody plants). While the first recorded use of petroleum can be found 4,000 years ago when natural asphalt was used in the walls and towers of Babylon, it wasn’t until the early 20th Century that its potential, as a useful form of energy, began to exert its influence on so many and diverse aspects of human life.
Tumblr media
This diagram (which appeared in a previous post) describes the fairly typical journey a technology makes, starting from its genesis as an emerging technology in the laboratory. Next is the technological dream phase in which the potential of the emerging technology is translated into techno-utopian imaginaries – intended by both corporations and politicians to sell particular agendas to the public audience. Designers love this phase, as the constraints that apply to the design of normal products do not yet exist. The last phase is the transition of aspects of the dream into real products in everyday life – and this of course means the implementation of all the infrastructure necessary to allow them to function. Finally the product descends into obsolescence, as it is replaced by more advanced iterations. Or else the dream gets recycled or regurgitated; updated with the latest technology.
Tumblr media
Applying this journey to petroleum – the new machines of the late 19th and early 20th Century, such as the internal combustion engine or the coal-powered steam generator – revealed for the first time the true potential of petroleum. In a split-second its energy, captured during the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, could be magically transformed into heat, noise and more importantly movement! Lots and lots of movement – think of the Italian Futurists in 1909, championing ‘a new beauty: the beauty of speed’ – ‘a roaring car … more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace’ – a new perspective on time and space that comes to symbolise modernity in all its thrilling, dynamic and destructive power.
Tumblr media
The aeroplanes, automobiles and ships that were built around these engines also became the symbols of the new machine age, as extrapolations of the potential of the internal combustion engine fed the utopian imaginaries of the near future.
For a country emerging out of the despair of the Great Depression, Streamline Moderne (as it became known) represented the American dream of freedom and escape – both in the physical sense, through the action of the engine, and in the metaphorical sense, through the sleek teardrop styling that gave the impression that the object was moving – even when standing still. Designers, meanwhile, were for the first time beginning to play an instrumental role in linking technological progress to the notion of a better future – all in the service of American corporate capitalism …
Tumblr media
… and in turn inspiring the design of the new wave of domestic products – toasters! radios! televisions! washing machines! – that would give consumers a sense of buying into, and thus belonging in, that utopian American dream.
Tumblr media
Nothing exemplifies this period of techno-optimism better than Futurama, General Motors’ exhibit at the 1939 New York World Fair. This described a further extrapolation of the potential of petroleum - outwards across time and space. Designed by Norman Bel Geddes, the 35,000-square foot interactive exhibition presented a version of the United States set 20 years in the future, with sprawling superhighways connecting the major cities and facilitating the growth of suburbia as commuters escaped from the claustrophobia of urban life.
E. L. Doctorow’s 1985 novel World’s Fair is revealing in its dramatisation of events, as it connects the key players who, behind the scenes, write the scripts for such techno-utopian futures. In this excerpt a family are leaving Futurama when the child asks his father for his opinion. The father replies:
Tumblr media
Of course the roads were built and many cars were sold, but with the benefit of hindsight it is obvious that the Futurama was no utopia. For consumers, however, the dream kept evolving.
Tumblr media
In the 1950s the jet engine allowed for super-sonic flight, expanding the horizons and moving the utopian visions upwards and into the ‘final frontier’ (note the colonising terminology) of space.
Tumblr media
Another famous world’s fair took place 25 years later using the very same venue – Flushing Meadows in Queens, in 1964. It represents the final extrapolation of petroleum utopias – within a few years they were exhausted. As the novelist J. G. Ballard observed in a 1979 interview with Penthouse magazine:
‘The world of "Outer Space", which had hitherto been assumed to be limitless, was being revealed as essentially limited, a vast concourse of essentially similar stars and planets whose exploration was likely to be not only extremely difficult, but also perhaps intrinsically disappointing. … The number of astronauts who have gone into orbit after the expenditure of this great ocean of rocket fuel is small to the point of being ludicrous. And that sums it all up. You can't have a real space age from which 99.999 per cent of the human race is excluded.’
Elsewhere at the same expo, however, a new genesis was being revealed - introducing a refreshingly new direction for technological futures.
Tumblr media
The IBM Pavilion, with exhibition design and a film presentation by Charles and Ray Eames and architecture by Eero Saarinen, introduced visitors to the computer and its place in mainstream contemporary life. Again quoting Ballard:
‘The ability to pass information around from one point in the globe to another in vast quantities and at stupendous speeds, the ability to process information by fantastically powerful computers, the intrusion of electronic data processing in whatever form into all our lives is far, far more significant than all the rocket launches, all the planetary probes, every footprint or tyre mark on the lunar surface.’
Tumblr media
Jumping forward to the present and the corporate dreams of today – very well encapsulated by Google’s self-driving car – it becomes apparent that little has changed in terms of strategy: government and corporations in collusion, shaping the technological future on our behalf, with largely the same agendas. At the forefront are a few leading designers whose role hasn’t for the most part evolved much since the days of Norman Bel Geddes.
Tumblr media
Here are a few key observations on why visions of the future have stagnated or are simply not appropriate for the world of the 21st Century:
1. Those responsible for the creation of future visions are guilty of being overly optimistic – never acknowledging the possible negative implications.
Tumblr media
2. Those responsible for the creation of these visions are guilty of being overly simplistic – perfect worlds, perfect people, interacting perfectly, thus negating the complex and messy reality of human lives.
Tumblr media
3. The reduction of future visions into objects of desire has resulted in the dislocation of means and ends – the systems that facilitate the function of products have become largely invisible and intangible.
Tumblr media
4. The reduction of visions into objects of desire leads to an increased instrumentalisation of operation and banal iterative development.
Tumblr media
5. The emergent technologies that are extrapolated into today’s utopian visions (IoT, AI, nanotech, etc.) tend to act in the background, at intangible scales, or in complex languages – meaning that the resultant futures are difficult to convey (and sell).
Tumblr media
6. Corporate imagination that informs future visions is frequently underwhelming – merely updating, through the application of emergent technologies, the pursuit of ancient human obsessions (artificial life, immortality, flight, automation).
Tumblr media
7. Finally, many of the metrics through which we evaluate future imaginaries remain the same as those from the machine age – faster, more efficient, more automated – and as such are wholly inadequate for addressing the complex problems we face today.

To say I’ve been waiting for something like Bloom Into You would be an understatement. My Verdict: Not only does Bloom Into You stand amongst the pinnacles of Yuri anime, it outshines some regular romance shows in the process. Yuu and Touko feel like fully fleshed out characters instead of the usual stock types and gives ample amount of time to not only developing the main girls but the rest of the cast as well. My hopes is that the success of this show will spawn a 2nd season. Buy it! A/N: SPOILERS for this show and other Shoujo-ai shows below. Bloom Into You a Bluray review
Tumblr media
youtube
I honestly think many newcomers to the Shoujo Ai genre don’t know how good they have it nowadays. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. Before the 1-2-3 Punch of Strawberry Panic, Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl and Simoun in 2006, Kannazuki no Miko was considered the pinnacle of Yuri Anime. But in 2018, Yuri anime seemed to make a comeback in full force with the 1-2-3 punches of Kase-san and Morning Glories, Bloom Into You and, yes, Citrus. The three adaptations of manga titles managed to be an oasis in the desert after titles such as Simoun failed to find an audience, Sweet Blue Flowers ending on a cliffhanger and Whispered Words bombed so hard, it was rumored to have killed the Yuri anime genre for years. Even titles after that such as Yurikuma Arashi and Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid didn’t manage to find a larger audience other than the converted niches they were aiming for. But then, Bloom Into You came onto the scene and became a revolution, for both longtime fans of the genre and newcomers. Bloom Into You didn’t just manage to be a critical success, but also managed to be a commercial juggernaut, spawning a stage play, multiple light novels and having numerous books of its manga sold. Freshman high schooler Yuu Koito has always loved shojou manga, so she is aware of what she ought to be feeling if she were to receive a love confession. But when a junior high classmate confesses his feelings for her, she somehow does not feel anything. She delays her response, and ends up entering high school, still unsure of how to respond to those type of feelings. While there, she happens to see the student council president, Touko Nanami, elegantly turning down a confession. Yuu is inspired to ask her for advice. She finds out that Nanami has never accepted a confession because none of them has ever made her feel anything in particular. The two bond over their similarities. Nanami realizes that she could be falling in love with Yuu, so she suddenly confesses her feelings to her. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the upperclassman and lowerclassman (or the Senpai and Kouhai) relationship. We’ve seen countless pairings with Sachiko and Yumi or Shizuma and Nagisa or Amane and Hikari or Utena and Anthy or Asuka Rei and Nanako or… you get the idea. (I watch a lot of Shoujo ai). Even when it’s established both girls are of the same age such as Kannazuki no Miko’s Chikane Himemiya and Himeko Kurusugawa or Kase Tomoka and Yui Yamada, there’s a notable class difference between the popular girl and the unpopular girl. But Touko and Yuu take all those past pairings and put them to shame. Yuu actually does feel like a fully fleshed out human being with her own agency and thoughts (a far cry from the naïve Himeko Kurusugawa and Nagisa Aoi). Yuu isn’t sure if she’ll ever be in a relationship and we’re treated to her inner monologue of whether she is capable of loving Touko the same way Touko loves her. At the same time, the more we see Touko, the more the outer exterior falls apart. Interior voice-over is said to be a lazy storytelling technique in fiction, but Yagakimi uses it to explore the very real and unsure feelings of Yuu. Yes, the trope of ‘the popular girl isn’t perfect after all’ trope has been done to death with Chikane, Shizuma, Shizuru, Asuka and others, but Touko feels particularly tragic as she’s locked in arrested development. Touko’s been trying to live in the footsteps of her deceased sister who was also Student Council president, only to find out that her sister wasn’t the image she always had in her head. It’s up to Yuu to find a way to save Touko from herself. Also, no one rapes or tries to rape each other. So, you know, progress! Also a breath of fresh air are the additions of other queer characters such as an older lesbian couple living together and Sayaka Saeki, Touko’s classmate who also harbors romantic feelings for Touko. Sayaka has been a fan favorite in the franchise and even has a Light Novel adapted after her. (Though spoilers indicate she’s to join the ranks of ‘lesbian best friend who is friendzoned by love interest’ alongside Strawberry Panic’s Tamao Suzumi and Yaya Nanto, Hajimete no Gal’s Ranko Honjou and Cardcaptor Sakura’s Tomoyo Daidouji). Sentai Filmworks did the localization of the show and for the most part, it has been a very solid translation to little or no changes. Luci Christian (who’s voiced Honey-sempai in Ouran High School Host Club and other lesbian characters such as Himiko from Shattered Angels) really brings a lot of range to the character. But Tia Ballard (who performed Teruhashi from the Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Marron in Dragon Ball Super and Lady Rain from Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid) manages to wring out real depth through Yuu. Her performance is subtle, slow and has enough energy to make it feel real. Rounding out the cast are familiar voice performers. Amber Lee Connors (who voiced Mei Aihara in Citrus) is nice to hear and Brittney Karbowski turns in a surprisingly toned down character, a far cry from some of her more energetic performances. JAPANESE AUDIO WITH SUBTITLES IS ALSO AVAILABLE. CAVEAT:  Through Shoujo-ai’s vast, incredible and at times, problematic, history, we’ve seen milestones and steps being placed into BiY’s direction. Slowly but surely, the path was being placed as every woman love woman anime placed its mark to getting here. From the tragedies in the past, to the slice of life shows to the shows pandering to titillation, Bloom Into You is not only an accomplishment in its own right, but a climax to every other shoujo-ai show out there. My only hope is that we get the much deserved 2nd season and adapt the rest of the wonderful manga. Verdict: Full Price!

MASTERLIST
“Are you sure you don't need glasses?”
“...No.”
“It's okay if you do. It's quite common at this age.”
“Shut up, Stark,” Bucky declared through the comms, getting stifled laughs from the other end.
“It's in another language. I'm not familiar with the Devnagri script,” the soldier murmured as he sifted through the pages in the journal in front of him to find some sort of code to decipher the words alien to him.
“Friday can trans-wait you don't have a body cam,” Stark was practically talking to himself right now.
Bucky had been sent down on an espionage mission to Brennwood Estate-  home of Eton Brennwood, world’s current strongest business tycoon along with a back-end dealer in arms in the black market along with being an infamous hoarder of the ancient artefacts- to figure out the codes for Eton’s underground lab where he had been keeping scientists to develop a new biotech for some really shady buyers around the world.
Natasha and Bucky had been the only choices amongst the entire team, considering their skills, but the former had already been compromised due to her recent recon on Brennwood where she had played a key role in finding out when and where the businessman was keeping his experiments hidden and his buyers on their toes regarding whatever he was considering of bringing on the table.
“Send us a picture, Bucky,” Natasha's voice directed him.
Bucky suddenly froze for a moment, his eyes darting towards some unknown void in front of him as his heartbeat accelerated a bit.
“Bucky?” Steve called out for confirmation, making the sergeant reach inside his jacket to take out his phone and stare at it for one elongated, terrifying moment.
“You do know how to take a picture from your phone, right Buck?” Sam asked, his voice dripping in pure mischief, making Bucky curse at the man internally.
Burner phones were so much easier to deal with. Why did everything have to ‘smart’ now? Was his only thought.
He flinched as the screen on his phone lit up with an unknown number asking him to video call.
“Uhh…”
“It's me,” Tony spoke in his ear, “slide the lock on the screen to accept my call so we can translate the code for you.”
Following his simple and clear-cut instructions, Bucky managed to flip the screen towards the journal on his second try, getting an encouraging cheer from all the Avengers huddled together in the Quinjet around the screen.
“Okay, that’s it,” Tony announced as he shifted in his chair to reveal a tired Pepper enter the study from behind him, “good job Barnes. Let others take care of the rest. Get out of the estate now before they smell out the old man stink and find you.”
“Very funny, Stark,” Bucky mumbled as he ended the call by tapping the red button, a little happy on the inside that his relationship with Tony was making some progress these days.
And just like the silent breeze that was blowing over the trees, not making its presence felt till it had passed by him, leaving him comparatively colder than before, he made his way out of the heavily guarded estate, taking the dark forest trail towards the road about a few miles from the place where he had parked his bike.
He kept getting the updates over the comms, as the team infiltrated Eton’s lab, making his walk back a lot less tiring when Sam was not on his back quipping him about everything he did.
“No guards on level one,” Sam’s voice stated over the comms, “Brennwood better not have hired some ripped scientist to save on security guards. That is one really bad combination right there.”
“Excuse me?” Banner’s questioning voice came from beside Tony. He had clearly taken over from where Tony had been a few moments ago.
“Because they are strong and smart. Not to mention they can make any freaking poison at the turn of their hand, man.”
Bucky forced out a silent laugh.
“Yeah, makes it hard for Sam to jump up to their IQ level with just his fists,” he articulated.
“I have a suit, I can fly over their goddamn IQ and look good while doing it. Shut up, Barnes.”
Tony was watching the progress of the team while convincing Pepper that there was no chance of him missing their dinner date tonight as everything was going smoothly and the team would have all the evidence to put Eton behind bars for a long time.
“Tony,” Pepper enunciated, “don’t promise me things that are sure to turn ugly sooner or later, okay? We can have dinner over here and Bruce can join us-”
Bruce turned in the chair-away from the screen- on the mention of his name, his face filled with berries that he was eating from the bowl Tony had offered him.
“I thought we had a date. Why would Bruce join us on a date? Are-are you breaking up with me?”
Pepper’s expression went blank for a second.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah.”
“Tony, we’ve been married for a year now. I am not breaking up with you,” she sighed.
A monotonous chime over the screen turned everyone’s attention to a signal coming out from the Avenger’s facility.
“Level two clear,” Natasha responded from the other side, her body cam showing no heat signatures on the floor...
Bruce looked at Tony regarding the unknown signal before accepting the call.
“Level three clear,” Steve announced, “guys, I don’t like it.”
Bucky’s pace slowed down a bit before he regained his normal gait.
“I agree with Steve,” Natasha acknowledged, “there’s no one in sight here. Not even the scientists. Tony, did we decipher the text correctly?”
Everyone who was not at Tony’s place at that point paused their movements when they did not get a quick reply from Stark.
“Tony?” Steve spoke next, a hint of worry in his voice that only Bucky could trace.
“Barton,” Clint’s mechanical voice came over the comms, confusing everyone for a second.
“Clint?” Natasha’s voice tried to reaffirm, “I thought you had gone home for the holidays.”
“...I am home for the holidays. Which one of you morons called me? I lost to my son in Mario Kart so whoever it was, better have some good explanation behind this.”

“How can something be so beautiful?”
You exhaled as your eyes took in the beauty of the symbols laying down in front of you- the thick papyrus dating back centuries- making you squirm internally at the luck of not being able to read and preserve one with your own eyes and hands.
“Miss Friday” you called out into the air, a jump in your step, “could you please pull up Miss Dur’s instructions on how to go ahead with the preservation process?”
“Of course, Miss Y/L/N. You can just call me Friday. If you want I can help you out by walking you through Miss Dur’s entire preservation process.”
You chuckled as your hands went into your bag to take out your earphones. “I’ll call you Friday when you call me Y/N. And I’m good with the display though. I want to enjoy a bit of my playlist tonight while working. So, just make sure you I don’t get any messages on my display while I’m working; no matter how important. No hard feelings, my good AI?”
“No hard feelings, Y/N.”
You gave a thumbs up in the air before putting on your earphones and readying the chemicals to wash the papyrus that would help conserve its original content.
Once all the contents were ready, you pressed play and so began the curing process to the surreal beats going about in your head.
It seemed like a passing dream.
A month ago you were studying on an entirely different continent, getting through your second year in college with no perfect plan for the future. A double major in semiotics and cryptography had seemed like a brilliant idea before college when most of the professors didn’t seem like dull creatures keeping an eight am class just so they could spit their misery of leading a sad unhappy life unto you, making you nearly hate the subject you had been looking forward to. Had it not been for a few of your seniors, three to be specific, and one professor- who not only helped you through the entire ordeal, but also made sure you were displaying your untapped talent in different competitions both on and off campus- you were sure you would have quit college a long time ago.
Two weeks earlier you were entered into a competition online by one of your seniors- Lena- where you nearly bypassed your way through some gaming portal’s fictional facility’s security because someone thought it was a brilliant idea to encrypt the entire building’s signal on their personal chart of symbolism. Fortunately for you, when the rest of your opponents were busy comparing smiley faces to emotions, you were looking for the origin- the chart- because no matter how good anyone is, they always will keep a backup of the blueprint any idea was based on.
It was only ten hours later when the local police entered your college dorm to bring you in for questioning did you realise that you had actually been breaking codes for some really bad guys on the dark web, who had been using noobs like you to enter secure facilities- not really fictional- and rob them of whatever sensitive information they had on them. You were to be thrown in prison for aiding some professional invisible lethal forces in bypassing the security to one America’s top 500 companies had it not been for Tony Stark himself taking full responsibility of the situation as well as giving you a full scholarship for your further studies at a college of your choice while interning at Stark labs as well help Scott Lang into making the his security system better- considering you’d broken through his two month’s work in just an hour.
So, here you were, a week later with all your life in your suitcases, living at the Avenger’s facility, working on an old story depicted in symbols- an artefact Stark said he had ‘borrowed from a bad guy who thinks this has some code to something he can use for his evil plans. We have to find the code before him to stop him.’
Bopping your head you swung your hips to Childish Gambino’s Summertime, your fingers worked steadily over the old fabric, making everything the solution touched a hue brighter with the wetness. So engrossed were you in the careful work mixed with a tang of heated music, you never noticed the alarms off around you, the lights everywhere- save the lab that had the power connections of its own, separated from the rest of the facility- shutting down, the backup red lights turning on as two silhouettes came out of the elevator doors from the far corner of the floor towards you.
The track changed, so did your movement, making you swing around to grab the final solution to dry up the fabric before putting it somewhere safe. By the time you were done with the drying agent, the silhouettes came and stood by the glass-walled lab, looking at you with sheer curiosity till you caught their movement from the corner of your eyes and tilted your heads towards them before taking out your earphones.
Two well-built men dressed in combat suits stood outside the lab entrance, one of them giving you a soft smile as he waved his hand at you.
You took out your earphones to acknowledge their presence.
“Can I help you?”
The smiley man scratched his stubble and chuckled at some internal joke while the other one just stood there like a rock.
“Sure, sweetheart,” his husky voice cooed, or rather tried to coo at you, sending a really uncomfortable tickle down your spine, “what are you listening?”
“...Hunnybee.”
“Mh,” he tilted his head, sending his eyes up and down your figure, making you conscious all of a sudden, “you look more of a ‘Filthy’ girl, the Timberlake one.”
“Excuse me?”
“What I mean is you can help us out by handing over that old piece of paper you got working on over there.”
That’s when you noticed the red hue of the emergency lights outside the lab with at least a dozen more men moving about in the darkness, forcing you to turn towards the screen and swipe away to find out Friday’s intrusion alert.
What in the hell…
“Well,” the stubble guy asked you gently, his eyebrows and hands raised in question, “what do you say, sweetheart? Help a guy out here.”
You took a step away from their direction, your gloved hands sweeping the dry papyrus away from the table, rolling it and pulling it behind you. “Mr Stark didn’t send you here.”
It was more of a statement than a question, making the guy’s smile falter and his lips twitch, his hands going down in momentary defeat.
“The paper. Yes or no.”
You inched away further, finding your legs walk into Bruce’s desk.
“No,” you stated in the most obvious sense, surprised at your brain’s ability to be so dangerously subtle in a situation that could turn fatal for you.
The stubble guy dipped his head forward, inhaling in a long tiring breath before moving something from his back forward.
A machine gun.
Correction: the situation did just turn fatal for you.
For a second you froze there, your body not being able to decide between the flight or fight response as it saw both the men pull the trigger, your brain waiting for the glass walls to shatter and you to be dead any second, flinching as the bullets came out but dropped or bounced away just as they met the glass, leaving nothing but tiny frosty traces on the transparent surface.
“The lab is under emergency security, Y/N,” Friday’s soothing voice made you jump. “The chances of the breach are it 1.09 per cent.”
“Huh?” was your only response as your eyes didn’t leave the two men cursing the glass before signalling each other to take something else out of their utility belts.
“My security system is being bypassed at the moment, Y/N. If they are successful in doing so, I would not be able to keep them outside the lab anymore. The intruders have already cut off the rest of the facility’s power, making me unable to communicate with Mr Stark on my own.”
The men each took out what looked like spray bottles. The blank-faced man sprayed a string of white foam all over the lower parts of visible glass of the lab- which was practically three sides of the entire area- as the other stood there smiling before taking out a lighter and throwing in the material to create an explosion of fire all around you, making you bend down in fear of everything exploding in your face.
“Ten minutes,” the uncomfortable husky voice came again, “you have ten minutes to come out yourself and hand me that shitty paper before I melt this glass and get it from over your dead body.”
“Tell me,” you announced, never taking your eyes off the man, “tell me how can I help you reach Mr Stark,” making your intentions pretty clear to the man.
