Alastor Redesign
Tumblr media
Omg there’s like over 70 people following me – guys I'm o///O flattered and flabbergasted.
Anyway, onto today’s main event, Alastor. I hate Alastor’s og design, I hate his twig waist and his shoulder pads and the way you can’t see his antlers next to his ears, and his bow tie ugh viv please and his HAIR what even is that??? Not even mentioning that nothing about his design is really like a focal point. There’s no one thing that’s particularly interesting. At least before this he had that cathedral window looking cross on his undershirt that I found interesting. Nothing about his says he’s from the 1930’s other than dialogue.
I wanted him to be in greyscale because that’s the coolest aesthetic, and colored photos weren’t a thing until way after the 30s. Recently I saw jjk, and Jogo’s teeth threw me because at some points I thought he was just straight up toothless. But then when I started this design, that colored tooth look spoke to me. Initially his teeth were yellow to look gross like he never brushes them, but then I was like ‘ayo wait, he’s literally a cannibal’, thus his vibrant red teeth to really pop against his greyscale. Initially his undershirt was white, but I feel like that was too much contrast and white is typically innocence, so by instead having a deep red it shows he’s just straight up bloodthirsty underneath his formal appearance. I also considered it being black, but then he looked like a pastor, and I wasn’t too much of a fan of it. The idea of the red on his design is that it leads your eye down his design to take it all in, with his face being the focus. I gave him glasses because I like the way it obscures his eyes a bit and I imagine they do the anime thing where they glow and hide his eyes. I liked Viv’s idea of sinners having marks where they died, and I slicked his hair back to show it off very prominently. His antlers are larger, I gave him cute lil deer ears. Also, under his suit he is lowkey buff. I feel like a serial killer should at least look physically capable of taking someone down not whatever the fuck viv’s nasty twig men can do. Like, in that comic with the cute sheep girl, when Alastor goes demon mode his body looks so snappable I just wanna like grab his waist in my hands and break it like a twig. I also tried to keep his design simple as if this were for animation, I know pinstripes are complicated and so are antlers but other than that I tried to keep his design basic.
If I were to rewrite him based solely on the pilot, I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. Alastor is a decent character, his voice actor gives him life, the radio filter is cool, and nothing he did made me want to break my screen (ANGELDUST). The only thing I'd change would be his position in hell. Like, viv’s hell is so wack and I hate it, she’s got the princes, then the goetia and the overlords and then sinners and blah blah, it’s a lot to keep track of, not even mentioning the rings and circles thing. I think Alastor should have had dealings with hell as a human, maybe he routinely did sacrifices or something, and he made a deal with the archdemon Alastor and when he died like... uuhhhhhhh. Maybe through connections he’s gained more power? Idk, I just know I hate the idea of his dying and then having like the bestest most powerful demon powers despite not being hellborn. It’s got this mary sue stench. I’ll figure it out, maybe, who knows.
I’m not gonna start rewriting since there’s nothing to go off of and alter yet, so that’s gonna have to wait until the show actually drops before anything concrete happens lol.
Also the sheep girl is a sinner that reoccurs in the show now so sorry I don’t make the rules, you can’t give me a cute sheep girl and try to take her away, I’m gonna redesign her and shove her into the plot as someone looking for redemption at the hotel

hello hello for the five characters/episodes/shows/ships preference order I must know how you rank the OG hbo war ships (winnix, baberoe, webgott, luztoye, speirton) please and thank you :)))
greetings my lovely!! i had way too much fun doing this i Will Not Lie to you. that's part of the reason it took so long for me to do this asdfhdsaj i got my dramatic Thinking Cap on
5 - winnix - we'll go to chicago. i'll take you there
look. LOOK. i get the winnix hype ok. i get it i truly do. but ALSO. also. it's just not for me. i read one winnix fic that WRECKED me forever, but honestly, my thoughts on winnix and shipping and relationships is Complicated and Long-Winding forever. they still are a big part of my frontal lobe tho i am not gonna lie
4 - baberoe - you called me babe
the fuckin OP of Relationships That I Am Unable to sufficiently define. i love them dearly, but the Baberoe Shipping Journey and Subsequent Massacre of Babe Heffron's Characterization and its slow recovery was honestly insane and had a permanent impact on my psyche
3 - speirton - hell, it was you, first sergeant
they r just.... they're soooo..... well. i haven't written them since the bonnie and clyde au because every speirton feeling i have is wrapped up in that in some way, but basically, Devotion and bringing out both the freakiness and love in one another is Big for me and they r a vibe. and they must have insane chemistry bc one actor is insane catholic and the other's a fucking wahlburg
2 - webgott - i can't choose a quote for them everything that came out of their mouths was batshit insane
they're in love. they're chasing each other. they're leading each other. they've broken up 3712847 times and gotten back together 9823413 times. they're emotional dykes they're insane they have all the limited edition star trek plates and all of kate chopins books idk how else to describe it
1 - luztoye - hell of an idea, joe
they had like THREE scenes together but something about them has wedged itself in my brain and won't leave. see here and here for More Talk on this and WHY they're number one forever, but, in short:

tm for swearing/cussing bc i need to wash my mouth with soap
im afab, and i feel a conection to womanhood and stuff but at the same time im like "is gender for real?" "am i girl?" "what the fuck is a woman? am i one? i dont know shit"
and like, i use she/her pronouns and they are fine, but im an actor and most (all) my characters are male and use he/him so getting in character everyone uses he/him on me, and a guy say he was sorry because at this point he has trouble seeing me as a woman and out of character he (and everyone) accidentaly uses he/him on me and like coincidence, a lot of my characters are named a variation of the name "juan" so everyone calls me juan (there a lot of people named like me in the club so its more easy that way), and i dont mind, i dont mind people using he/him on me, i dont mind being called juan, i dont mind they dont see as a girl
one time i surprised myself because i started to think about myself in he/him pronouns (my mother language, spanish, is really gendered) and it feels weird but i accidentaly use it
and like i said before, i feel a conection with womanhood/girlhood, i dont think i feel the same with manhood/boyhood but he/him is fine??? most times??? sometimes he/him feels so weird and other times fine???? but girl is always there so its no like gender fluid and that, fuck i know
(i dont really think im like non-binary (not refering to the spectrum, just the non-binary) bc all that woman stuff and i also dont like they/them on myself)
gender is too confusing, i'd like an answer but at the same time i think it would complicate stuff??? idk, what i do like to know is my pronouns, because yeah, she/her is always fine but he/him depends a lot on the person using the pronouns and how i feel at that moment
so, to sum up, everything is confusing, i dont know shit, fuck gender for being so complicated
yeah gender is confusing as fuck. i mean, you could absolutely be a girl and also use he/him pronouns but i know that's not always super helpful with the confusion.

Jared Kleinman for the character asks :)
Favorite Thing About Them
Jared is so bad at communicating he reminds me a lot of myself. I have ODD so it’s a little different, but the man is an asshole in the best way possible. He is petty and gives off angry cat energy in both fandom aspects and canon. Also I appreciate that he never acted against Evan even when he had the opportunity and reason to do so, he threatened it but he kept his mouth shut. Real friend right there <3 (I could tell everyone everything! Okay great! You go ahead! Do that! Tell everyone how you helped write emails pretending to be a kid who killed himself! Fuck you Evan!)
Least Favorite Thing About Them
He doesn’t have enough screen time/show time. People mischaracterize him because his entire character is shoved into as little time as possible. I know I just said that I love how he’s an asshole but he’s more than an asshole. He’s so clearly lonely and more than just an angry kid. At least in the book they made him “hot” in the end but the show and movie pretty much get rid of him come act two
Favorite Line
Kinky!
Just kidding
Asshole!
Okay okay for real this time
Yeah I hate to tell you this Evan, but you may have already perjured yourself.
Isn’t that only when you’re under oath? Like in a courtroom?
Well weren’t you under oath? In a way?
No.
Or from the movie (since I view them as different canons)
Connor took a letter from me. It was an assignment for my therapist.
Ew.
(I’d offer a different line but Jared doesn’t have that many)
BROTP
Jared and Zoe friendship!!! They hate each other they’re best friends they get drunk and cry together!!
Another excerpt of my own writing that explains this. Again my writing quality has gone up since this but oh well:
Connor rolled his eyes, "I'm saying that Evan will always be there, okay? You are so fucking stubborn, and I'm trying to be nice and make you feel better, just say thank you like a decent human being."
"You just made me feel shitty."
Connor threw his hands up, "Fuck! You're impossible!"
Zoe's voice screeched from below, "FUCK OFF! HE IS MY BEST FRIEND!"
— I don’t know what I want, but I need you. Chapter 12
OTP
Either kleinsen or kleinphy. They both have potential. All my kleinsen fics are really fluffy (soulmates, hurt/comfort, etc) and my kleinphy fics are like…rough and angsty (teen parenthood, child abuse, etc) I like both equally, but what I want to read depends on the content I’m looking for as shown by my own writing style
NOTP
Nothing icky like the parents being involved obviously, otherwise Jared/Zoe fics just don’t feel right. Jared is gay. Like he has to be. The book tried telling me he liked boobs and I know Val Emmich lied. Evan was simping at the end for a reason. Jared doesn’t even have to like Evan the man is still gay. Best part of the movie but dear god at what cost? (I did like the movie I swear)
Random Headcannon
Jared has two moms, or his mother is bisexual. I tried writing him with straight parents and every single time it feels kind of wrong
Also he has a cat. Her name is Mayonnaise. Mayo for short.
Unpopular Opinion
Idk if this is unpopular or not but I’m glad they cut Goin’ Viral. It only pushes the he’s an asshole idea and even though I love the song it wouldn’t have helped his characterization. I would have liked for them to properly record the song when they released the deluxe album but apparently Disappear Pt. 2: the duet version was more important.
Also Jared Goldsmith was my favorite Jared actor other than Will Roland. Nothing can beat the Will Roland vibes
Book Jared shouldn’t have ditched his glasses and got buff, they made him too powerful. Evan couldn’t help but fall for him. Let him stay as he is don’t make him conventionally attractive!
Song I Associate With Them
Jared is such a complicated guy. His feelings are deep. He’s cringy but free. I haven’t thought about this in a while hang on…
I imagine that Jared is a pop girlie and this gives the desperate for attention vibes that I usually associate with him
And as for his inherently cringey vibes that I usually give him…
I’m not sorry
Favorite Picture Of Them
Again, we have options…

it seems to me that the deal with pathologic 2 english dubbing is entirely dividing all of the characters into three categories: British, South Park character and Women (with intended derogation). honestly drives me insane a bit because with russian well we don't really have that distinct of accents so everyone kinda sounds the same in that manner... and it almost feels less theatrical (maybe it should. but the way english dubbing sounds theatrical To Me is. well. NAWT GOOD) in russian voice over, especially with the kids. (still thinking about british 20 y.o. oxford student that is Notkin and south park caricature voiced by an adult woman that is Khan in english dub. *[metaphorically] holding a cig in between my fingers pensively* still not dealing very well with it emotionally.) the only voice that set me absolutely fucking insane in russian voice over was Eva's – WHY DOES SHE TALK LIKE THAT!! WHAT DID THEY DO TO HER!!!!! misogyny in casual ways etc. etc. but with english dubbing every other character forced a fight or flight response out of me. idk maybe i am a bit biased but with the way it is just so different.... pathologic 2 (RUS) and pathologic 2 (ENG) are like two siblings who are mostly the same but one of them is objectively . uglier than the other. speaking of siblings, it turns out Stamatins have DIFFERENT voice actors in english. this feels like a crime....
i could talk about the voices for Hours bro i played the game russian voices/english subtitles and most of the lp's i watched also went this route except One so i discovered the english voices like second-handedly and Scared Me bro scared me... i've already talked about the kids' voices like I Know. I Know how hard it is to VA kids especially if you have to work with regulations making it harder to hire child VAs (for the better of the kid mind you, i'm not saying #bringbackunregulatedchildlabor here) and i'm sure the women who voice teenage/child boys are doing their absolute bests but man. i think the suspension of disbelief works way more when working with for ex. anime voice acting bc you can See the characters are only vague simulacra of children, but in a game that has pretty detailed 3D models and strives for a certain realism in the faces and whatnot, it is Jarring...
i think the use of British/generally Non-American english accent is like a commin trope to denote a foreignness or a different social status (because most of the anglophone players Will Be americans because. bigger country) but like. come on. look_how_they_massacred_my_boy.mp4... i'm sure there are subtleties within the russian voices that i'm not gettin because. well i'm not russian i guess that helps that would be Complicated to transpose in english but like. worarrgh.
i'm Very Glad both of these games had a release with an english voice acting cast because we like. Know. the tendency that americans have wrt Foreign Media / refusing to interact with things if they are not Dubbed in english even if they are subtitled [i think the whole Parasite movie release put that on the carpet again but i knew of it way before that] so it allowed for More People to check out the games [again. for the better and the worse...]
can we talk about eva and the twins let me talk about eva and the twins. can i talk about eva and the twins?
p2 russian eva has a light and high-pitched voice but it's kinda like. airy and hazy like she's deep in thoughts like she's daydreaming... her english voice sounds like the squeaky voices anglophone VTubers make so sound like cutesy anime girls. she sounding more like a child. and when you pair it with her neotonous face with her fit that looks like a child having dressed themselves and the general "youthening" of her personality. well i ain't saying anything but i'm making the biggest side-eye known to man rn!
p1 russian andrey has a sort of like high almost mighty and haughty attitude, kinda towering, p1 russian peter also has this sort of height with pride to it but fraying on the ends like mouth woolen (the Drink)... p1 english andrey has some of that height and restraint, kinda high in the throat like he's being above... p1 english peter is Squeaky. he's so squeaky. almost sounds giddy from time to time but also. The Drink. my man an arm on the wall drink in the other at a party telling you about shit only his drunk mind can comprehend...
p2 russian andrey has a depth and a certain Mystery but it still looks natural/like he's Deep In Thoughts... p2 russian peter is way #deeper than his p1 counterpart but it still looks natural/that's a Depressed voice if i ever heard one. scraping the floors with it.
p2 english andrey is so raspy it's kinda comical like he playin toughguy and p2 english peter while still Deep is like Theatrical to a goofy extend like IT'S NOT THAT SERIOUS. YOU SLEEP IN A BATHTUB 😭😭
while it. is normal for siblings to have different voices and would make sense for two siblings to have different voices, and as such voice actors... it doesn't for the stamatwins!! are you crazy? you SEPARATE the stamatwins? you make them into two people instead of two sides of a same coin? JAIL!! JAIL FOR THE VOICE ACTORS

Hi! So, you’re always nice and respectful in your replies so I’m gonna ask. In my real life I have friends whose political views I might not agree with, so why do I struggle not to think less of Ronen because he is so friendly with J*li*n ? Like all the cast seem ok with JW but he seems closest with Ronen (and Brian). Maybe irl he’s not how he comes across on social media but he has followed Trump and Andr*w T*te so I totally understand why the fandom doesn’t like him, and I feel the same. But then Ronen seems to really like him and loves hanging out with him and this just makes me conflicted.
That is a good question and idk that I have a good answer. I don't know very much about Julian, I don't pay super close attention to any of the actors (other than enjoying their thirst traps and photoshoots etc) but I have sort of tangentially seen the fandom have issues with him. He gives off kind of frat boy energy imo that I don't necessarily fuck with but other than that I don't know a lot of details, but Andrew Tate is straight up a human trafficker so ... yeah if he still actively follows that guy, that's kind of a problem. I guess we just don't know how someone is in real life. Who someone follows on Instagram doesn't tell the whole story of their person, which isn't to make excuses for him but it's just to say that the people who know him in real life are in a better position to judge his character than we are. But I also think it's okay to be disappointed in someone or dislike something they've done, and still like them anyway. People are complicated. I think 'I love Ronen' and 'I wish he wasn't such close friends with julian' are thoughts that can coexist. Nothing is as cut and dry as twitter brain makes it seem and trying to force everything into the box of either morally pure or problematic is itself pretty problematic, because it leaves no room for growth and it demonizes the very idea of someone becoming more educated and changing their mind, which is the literal progress that we should be aiming for.

Also like, people ignore the fact that, given how Laudna was chased away for several years, it's to be expected that she would keep a few things close to her chest, such as romantic/platonic feelings toward another person, also it's kind of to be expected that Laudna would have feelings toward Imogen and not wanting to admit them or to compartmentalize them
Also i saw a couple "Marisha admitted to being in love with Imogen is 4SD" as if Marisha's perspective of Laudna's feelings won't be different from how Laudna expressed them? Insane behavior lmao
(Anon that talked about 4SD )
Last ask wasnt me saying Imodna is for sure happening, i have my own perspective on how their relationship is and would like to be, but it's more me ranting about how part of the fandom has this idea that they know how another persons character should act on without giving a second thought about the why they do?
Idk if im explaining myself lmao, it's been a couple of tiresome weeks and as a bit of an Imodna petty hater, instead of being like "Huh? That's interesting" like i would normally with other stuff i am a petty hater about (cough, cough-Molly-cough), i just roll my eyes and sigh already expecting the fandom reaction being as annoying as they have been
Like also, Laudna knows Bor'dor for less than a week, she is not going to say much about it, this isn't a romcom
-----
Hey anon,
So breaking this down:
I actually don’t think it’s automatic that Laudna wouldn’t admit to romantic feelings! It’s definitely on the table that she’s suppressing or denying romantic feelings, but I’m really hesitant to make any assumptions, and I happen to be very interested in the case where Laudna’s telling the simple truth.
I will say I haven’t seen that comment regarding 4SD nor do I know what they’re even referring to; the only thing I can think of that Marisha’s said on 4SD that would be out of place for a very close friendship is the recent lightning titties joke and I personally am chalking that up to Marisha thinking it’s cool, not necessarily Laudna, though it’s ambiguous.
I do agree that the crux of why I’ve actively disliked this ship rather than being neutral - since in a vacuum with no fandom contact, I think I'd just be apathetic - has been that there is such a narrow and monolithic fanon that doesn’t really match the characters as they actually have been acting in canon, created by a fandom which attacks anything that deviates. Again - it’s interesting to consider why Imogen, who has a complicated relationship with her father, is so willing to prioritize either the mother she’s known about for a month and a half, or her own comfort and power, over her party members, including Laudna. I don’t enjoy that people react with such hostility towards exploration of that topic simply because it upsets their personal desires. I’ve also been frustrated by yes, the reduction of a story that’s not inherently a romance into nothing more than that, and the reduction of guest actors to “outsider who exists to ask Imogen about Laudna or Laudna about Imogen” instead of “person with their own rich life.”
I guess what I’m saying here is I share a lot of your frustrations about people jumping to conclusions and building up a cherrypicked fanon that will throw anyone - including Imogen and Laudna, or Laura and Marisha - under the bus, and blowing one relationship out of more than twenty out of proportion, but that’s been a problem basically from the start of the campaign, so this is just more of the same. But it also feels like you’re saying “I think Laudna is hiding her feelings for one of a number of (very feasible) reasons” and I’m of the opinion that while that’s absolutely possible, it’s more fun to me to consider the situation in which she is being honest.

I'm rewatching Shameless (US) from the start and all my good and bad feelings about the show keep resurfacing. It's somehow so real and yet ridiculous and insultingly messy.
Some early observations:
The reason I can never get invested in Jimmy/Steve is because he doesn't become a real boy. His backstory and storylines are a incomprehensible mess and he's essentially a cardboard cut-out next to Fiona— one of the most complicated characters in the show (all her love interests end up having this problem). However, he has his moments and the good actor is good.
Karen starts as a true character, and I freaking love her relationship with Sheila (Sheila 💜), but she quickly disintegrates into this misogynistic cautionary tale obviously written by someone wanting to punish promiscuous teenage girls.
Oh man, Ian and Mickey. These guys. They have such a roller-coaster yet to go, and idk, I'm both looking forward to the tragedy and eventual happy ending and not (😭). They're such kids at the start and I want them to be well, you know? They'll come to shoulder too much of the shows drama (when it was a drama). In the meantime they're getting carried away with being infatuated and so I get why Mickey risks his safety and Ian pushes, but it doesn't make it easier to watch knowing what will happen. It's so— like there is such a marked difference between the moment before, when Mickey is being a giddy 17-year-old slowly opening up, and then him being totally and completely traumatized. Also, I want to fight anyone who calls Mickey Ian's bully. In what world do they live in?
Ahh, Lip, he's frustrating but also damn believable. The intelligence that goes nowhere. The cocky teen arrogance, casual sexism and racism, the rise and fall... 😔
Something that keeps striking me this time around, actually, is how shameless the racism and sexism is. Often it showcases the reality of how these characters think and the disconnect between that and the truth, like saying "here is what everyday racism looks like", but it also feels like a reason for the writers to say something racist and sexist. It is the first hint at how careless this show will be with its subjects, themes, and comedy.

Ice's death in tgm left me in a weird place mentally too. I have zero complaints with the movie itself. Its my own feelings Im trying to untangle - to see ice die from the thing that's made val so sick. It was a respectful send off for the character but it also makes me feel some kind of way considering val's situation. I also wanted to ask you if you dont mind since youve been a val fan longer, what according to you are the most striking things youve observed about him?
I understand completely. It's ... I don't know, maybe it was cathartic for him. I wonder what Jack and Mercedes felt, fake attending their own father's funeral after he fake dies from the thing that actually made him so sick and has completely altered his life ... Who knows, maybe they're all more emotionally well-adjust than we are.
Oh, Val. Come with me, I have a feeling this is going to be a long one.
The Artist
First off: I believe Val Kilmer is the most underrated actor of his generation. And I'm not alone in thinking that. While doing research for my thesis, I came across a number of people in the industry who describe him exactly that way. I also read an extremely unkind article that posited him as "the failed Tom Cruise," and in addition to just being kind of ugly, it kind of misses the point of Val altogether. Val Kilmer never wanted to be a movie star. Val wanted to be an actor. From his days at Juilliard and decades after that, Val considered acting to be a serious art, and what he wanted as a professional was to explore that art and challenge himself. He wanted to do Hamlet. (And he did, in 1988 at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. But that was his goal since he was a teenager, when he started pursuing acting formally.)
Tumblr media
Some people he has worked with have called him difficult, but at the center of these accusations, I read Val trying to do his job well. The directors of Top Secret!, Val's first film role, complained that he asked them for more direction, and that, "this really isn't that kind of movie." Val was 23 years old. He had just graduated from Juilliard a few years earlier. He was doing what he was taught to do, and he was trying to do it well. As an actor, expecting a director to direct you seems ... like what their job is? IDK. In the '80s and '90s, he got cast in some leading man type roles because he looks like that, but if you look at his filmography, he's also choosing smaller, meatier or more complicated roles, or roles that let him work with people he wanted to work with. At the same time as he was playing Batman in the highest grossing movie of 1995, he was shooting Heat because he wanted to work with Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. (When they approached him for the role, they told him they couldn't pay him much above day rate, what can we do to keep you? and he was going to do the movie anyway because he wanted to work with the cast and crew, but he asked, "Can I be on the poster?" and that is an answer to a question that you didn't ask, but that is why Chris Shiherlis is so large on the Heat poster.)
Curious
This is related, but Val has an insatiable curiosity. He is always trying to learn new things, not only about acting, but about other forms of art, about the world around him. There are many stories of Val trying to learn from his colleagues on movie sets; he annoyed Sam Shepherd enough with his questions on the set of Thunderheart that Sam basically told him to fuck off, but he also spent a lot of time speaking to Chief Ted Thin Elk, less about acting and more about his life experience and his experience as an Indigenous person, something Val has a lot of curiosity about because he was told his whole life that his paternal grandmother was full Native, but that was really as much as he'd been told. (I think that probably helped him get into Ray Levoi's shoes, and his performance in that film is one of his subtlest, so much said with expressions or posture or the way he holds the silence... ugh, don't get me started, Ray.)
Tumblr media
And his curiosity has shaped his life and his career. He wanted to explore what he could do with his voice, and eventually found he was able to mimic Jim Morrison's voice so well that members of the band couldn't tell Morrison's tracks from Val's. In The Doors, he sang live on film, take after take. That's ... it's a little insane, in a very Val Kilmer kind of way. When he lost his voice, he started discovering ways he could act without it, and he started new ventures with other kinds of art.
Spiritual / Loving
Val's faith is an important part of his life. I admit to not knowing much about Christian Science, but I have read and heard Val talking about how he understands faith and his relationship with the world, and the word that he uses is Love. He seems to genuinely have an incredible relationship with his children. He's just constantly delighted by them, and he loves them so, so much. And I think that he views the whole world with an open heart, and that he loves more than just his family or his work or his faith: He loves the wonders of nature, and animals, and he loves art and the whole world, really. He has a sense of childlike wonder that is unexpected and refreshing in the hard, cynical world we live in. He finds beauty and fun and hope in so many things. In his memoir, Val quotes his then-wife Joanne Whalley as saying, "You have a crush on everything." And he admits that he does. And you get that sense from him. When I went to meet with him, he was incredibly kind and caring and curious and warm. He didn't have to meet with me. He agreed to for his own reasons. After he greeted me, he asked me why I wrote the book, why him, and when I explained it to him, he seemed genuinely touched. I thanked him for getting me through a rough time in my life, and he took my hand in his and squeezed it, and just inclined his head. This was after he'd gotten sick, but before he got the stoma, so he could speak, but I could tell it was difficult, and I imagine now that it was probably painful. His handler has asked me to bring several copies of the book, and I did, and I had one for Val, which he accepted very graciously, and the rest I was going to give to his handler because she hadn't said what she wanted them for, but she said no, keep those, and Val insisted on signing them all. He had a little vase with a yellow rose in it in his room, and he insisted on signing the vase for me, as well, and giving me both the vase and the rose because, "Women should have flowers." And he made sure we got a picture together, which I hadn't even thought of, because it was just a private meeting, like, in his space, but he wanted to give me that. I'm an empath, and I pick up on people's emotions really, really easily, and at no point did I ever get anything from him that wasn't warm and caring. He had never met me before. He only knew I existed for a few months. But he went out of his way to be kind to me, to make me feel heard and appreciated. That is a rare thing.

Final Kinnporsche Review
So in trying to figure out how to approach writing an actual Kinnporsche review, I ended up having to make a list of positives and negatives because I couldn’t figure out how else to approach it.  I’m also keeping this as non-spoilery as possible.
It’s not a show I can praise wholeheartedly without also tempering it with some criticism.  It’s not a show I recommend without caveats.  It is, however, a show I really have enjoyed watching and which I love in many respects.  I’m going to pretty immediately watch it again, and I watched most episodes twice while it was airing.  Plus I’m planning to read the novel on which it was based.
So obviously, I like it.
But let’s run through my pros and cons.  Gonna start with the cons and then linger on the pros.  These are all, of course, my opinion and I know some people don’t have the same experience of this show as me which is totally valid.  It really depends where your threshold/attitude is towards certain things in your media and everyone is different.
Tumblr media
Negatives:
I spoke about this in my initial post about the show, but early on and occasionally throughout, the show has some cringey and embarrassment-based humor.  Especially in episode 2, which is basically ENTIRELY that.  There are a number of scenes in this show I have watched mostly through my hands because I can’t handle second hand embarrassment.
The setting/premise of the show is not very believable.  The mafia family with a skyscraper full of young, hot bodyguards and James Bond style tech requires a good amount of suspension of disbelief to buy into.  In general the plot and action scenes require you watch with a lot of suspension of disbelief.  This isn’t realistic drama TV, it’s fanfic level mafia AU that runs entirely on Rule of Cool.
The way the plot is handled/shot/edited/written is uneven and has some very sloppy moments.  Some episodes are perfect and tight and others are a hot mess IMO.  There’s a lot of them cutting and you going “wait, what? what happened, where are we, did I miss something?”  Most of the time, the scene you find yourself in is fun and sometimes delightful and therefore you don’t actually care how you got to it.  But it still...rankles, and shows the inexperience of much of the team behind the show.
I can’t speak very well to how this compares to other BL dramas or Thai dramas, but there’s a good amount of cheesy fan service that shows off the bodies of the actors.  I’m not talking about specifically sex scenes or romance scenes, but everyone having their shirts unbuttoned practically to their waists, removing clothes for little reason, etc.  You get used to it as like...background levels of fan services and certainly the eye candy is very nice but...it could turn some people off (and others on I’m sure).
This is almost a World Without Women, as tends to be a problem with BL content.  This really feels like a world where women somehow don’t exist and most men are just queer by default.  There are a couple of mother figures, literal and figurative, but they are rarely on screen.  It would feel a little less weird if, like, IDK any of the men of the family had a female significant other who wasn’t dead.
There are elements of dubious consent in both the kinnporsche and vegaspete (and actually almost kimchay) ships.  There’s one scene of basically sexual assault that IMO is well-handled in the aftermath, but it IS between two people who go on to be in a relationship/fall in love.  There’s also a lot of violence, on-screen torture, and one ship where one of them tortures the other and keeps him as a prisoner before falling for him.   So...there are elements you could say are problematic and/or toxic.  If you are sensitive to these things/themes you should stay away.  BUT I do think the way all of them is handled is SUPER INTERESTING and appealing to me personally.  I love some redemption narratives and complicated characters and relationships.
Which brings me to the Positives.
One of my general complaints about a lot of BL dramas is that they involve young characters in high school or university.  Kinnporsche is lovely in that regard because the characters/actors are mid-late 20s and the plot is way more interesting that just school drama.
The acting level of this show is EXCELLENT pretty much across the board.  Every once in a while a side character has bad line delivery or a particular scene twigs my bad acting nerve, but overall I’m INCREDIBLY IMPRESSED with the cast.  Especially since this is the first job for some of them.  (I have a Real Problem with bad acting that ties into my embarrassment squick so this is a concern with small productions.)
But really Mile, Apo, Bible, Build...they all fucking killed it and conveyed such a range of content.  But especially the super emotional scenes were so fucking good.  (I’m especially impressed with Apo and Bible...damn.)
The filming is very aesthetic, pleasant, and fun to watch.  Despite the obvious low budget which occasionally shows in things like the rare CGI, the cinematography is impressive.  The show loves to show it off, too, with the colored lighting and camera angles, but it never feels too much and makes it a LOT more visually interesting than pretty much any other BL I’ve seen images of.  (And a lot of regular TV, especially romance-focused shows.)
I started talking above about the complicated characters, and this is where the show SHINES.  The characters feel complex and realistic, and have believable development across the series, which of course the acting level shows off.  But also the relationships have ARCS, really huge amounts of development.
Kinnporsche especially, since that’s the focus of the show.  It’s really a sorta enemies to lovers situation and there’s a lot of stops along the way, although they really sort themselves out by a little over halfway through the show.
Vegaspete is the secondary ship and it doesn’t get started until close to the end of the season but they do SO MUCH with a few episodes.  I wish it had had a little more time, but I get why it happened that way.  This is even MORE of enemies to lovers with one of them being a main antagonist to boot.  I was expecting to HATE this ship and they...ended up being possibly my faves.
Tumblr media
The third ship is Kim/Chay and it’s a really side story kind of thing.  It doesn’t really get the development of the others but it has cute moments and is more of hints for the future/possibly S2.
But all the pairs have SUPER good chemistry.  Like, wow, okay.  That intimacy coaching worked I guess.
Speaking of which, let’s talk Sex Scenes.  This is going to sound a certain way, but my very favorite thing about this show is the sex scenes.  Because I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen better sex on screen.  Most sex scenes on film are cringey and awkward or uncomfortable looking.  But Kinnporsche manages to make them hot, sexy, beautiful, and also to have a lot of relevance to the characters and the relationships.  The sex scenes are meaningful and tell a story.  They have significance in the overall story.  The emotions on the characters faces is just as important as their bodies or even more so.  These sex scenes feel ACTUALLY INTIMATE and that’s VERY RARE.
And they are super explicit.  The extended version of the show is 21+ and yeah...this is definitely adults only content.  But mostly because they don’t shy away from the realities of what is happening.  Like, yeah, you know what sex act is occurring and it’s not all penetration.  I’m going to stop talking about the sex now because I’m probably going to do a post all about that.  I have a lot of feelings about it, as someone very concerned with the portrayal of sex and sex positivity.  But finally the last thing I’ll say is that if you’ve ever wanted to see good fanfic sex scenes on screen, this is the closest thing I’ve ever seen.
The show is very queer.  As I mentioned above, pretty much everyone in the show is casually queer as if that’s just the default.  Now that’s sorta because it’s in weird BL land, but also...something about the representation feels like there have been queer hands on it.  Now, I can’t obviously speak to the sexual or gender identities of anyone involved with the show.  I’m not pointing to anyone in particular with this.  But the way that there’s no homophobia onscreen, the way everyone just accepts “you love who you love”, the way there’s no gay panic, the way there’s a variation of the way gender is presented, with men of a wide range of feminine traits on display, the gnc characters... it’s a thing.
Tumblr media
I was originally VERY on guard about the representation in this show, especially when it came to stereotypes, but then the show just sorta kept not doing the stereotypical thing and exceeding my expectations.
Finally, the show is fun.  The tone bounces all over the damn place enough to give you emotional whiplash, but it’s almost always a fun ride if you just relax and shrug and go along with it.  The entire ensemble will win your heart and make you fond of them and ultimately you just have to root for this crazy, bizarre, unique little show that could.
Where to watch:  As far as I know, right now the only way to watch the show legally is with iQiyi VIP.  There may be some episodes up on YouTube but I think they are only the edited versions?  You want the extended ones, trust me.
However if you cannot access it through official channels for some reason, a quick search will find it elsewhere.  (I include this because usually I get a crapton of comments about how to watch a series.  So please...search engine folks.)

MORE RAMBLING ON THE 3 BODY PROBLEM NETFLIX SERIES
⚠️ Spoiler Warning for the series & books ⚠️
Unfortunately, this is mostly gonna be negative ranting because I am discovering that I am, indeed...a book purist... *CONFESSION 😔* yes, my fellow mortals...I am one of those "but that's not what happened in the novel" kind of person.
This series is low-key pissing me off with what they are doing with ye wengjie. You know....the most crucial character of the whole saga! Why is she all of a sudden in love with Mike? Ok. And why is she trying to save people all of a sudden? She wanted to destroy humanity for what was done to her. And then it was implied she changed her mind along the way...still having enough badassery in her to leave a crucial theory behind with Luo Ji, which, ultimately, did secure humanity's survival. Atleast, for some centuries. They also didn't do so much of her backstory properly. But they be throwing those easter eggs around like "HA-HAA YOU GET IT?!" Why is she in love with Mike Evans?! Why did the show make her look like she got influenced by him rather than the other way around in the books and cdrama. Why did the show make her feel so shallow... They did make it feel like so much of her strength and character did not exist. They took away so much depth and complexity from her, making her look like she did what she did 'in the heat of the moment'. There is SO MUCH that she endured in the source material. And she made all her decisions knowing FULLY what she is doing, under no one's influence. It's like...they villainized her more when there was no need to do that. She is already a great villain. She is literally the phrase "sympathy for lady vengeance" personified. Netflix 's 3 body problem just made her a simple bitter woman.
Also, genderswapping wang miao as auggie salazar. Cool, cool. I like it. What I would have liked more is if they didn't write auggie to be so annoying. Idk if it's the actor or the character writing but this is the worst performance of the cast in terms of acting. You know what, no...this is the writing's fault. I have decided. TBH the only interesting characters right now is Jin and Wade. I am not sure it's because of the actors performing great or the writing is really good for them tho. Also...the Will buying a star for Jin didn't hit me as much as it did in the book. Kinda disappointed in myself with that. Am I getting cold-hearted? Jin's boyfriend is that character I think...hmm. Will, Saul and the rich dude, they all acted like I was watching a YA Netflix series. Oh wait...
Idk how else to say it but they have netflix-ified all the characters 😂😂
I think those who didn't read the books or watched the cdrama would like it better. I am either too biased to like this watered down version of the original story or the show really is underwhelming.
They have "simplified" or dumbed down the whole story.
And I find that low-key offensive because the sciency parts and philosophical parts were not that complicated. General audience could have understood it. If I can get it then all can get it, and I could understand almost all of it. But the creators don't got enough fate in us. SHAME. They also completely slipped the part about how China's political and social environment had influenced the characters. So much meat from the story is just hollowed out. They basically took out all the seasoning that made the story's flavour stand out so much. And gave us...this...jam and butter sandwich. It's not bad food. It's just not the feast it should have been.
I feel like I am only saying bad things about the show, so, here are the positives: the series is, in the end, an entertaining sci-fi so far, with great visuals. Especially, in episode 2 and 5. The gore is GOOD. Most of the actors do good job. The VFX is pretty fantastic. They have crunched the story but I don't think it's gonna be confusing for new viewers. The screenplay adaptation is done well enough imo. As well as a usual good Netflix show can be. You will enjoy it more if the original books would stop whispering in your ear the whole time 🤭
Either way, I will still say, it's a solid sci-fi thriller on its own as a Netflix series.
As a fan of the source material, I will give them 4/10.
As its own thing, I will give it juuuuuuust below 7/10.

the shittiest thing is that there isn’t anything wrong with 15x18′s scene [the one thing i wish is that dean could have talked back and answered but i think we know why he didn’t]
bad things can happen to queer characters. the empty deal was set up since season 14 and it’s been dangling over our heads until 15x18 and the longer we went we either thought they forgot about it or we were clowning that destiel would be the thing that made him happy and indeed it was.
bad things can happen to queer characters if you allow the story to take flight from there. 15x18 wasn’t bury your gays [imo], indeed, technically, cas was taken alive to the empty. he wasn’t killed he was just kidnapped lol.
the issue wasn’t that the empty deal was fulfilled because again, it happened. it happens.
this show can have very sad moments. the show killed him in the season 12 finale too but we knew he was coming back so it was okay.
the problem was never 15x18. that scene was beautiful, the immediate aftermath is haunting, and its impact on the fandom and pop culture was felt deeply. sp8, bobo, jackles, misha, they all did a very good job. i can play that scene in my head like it’s on screen in front of me beat for beat.
the problem was the fact that 1519 and 1520 did literally no follow up.
****I’m going to state for the record right now, I don’t believe that cas is in heaven so that’s going to take up the bulk of the second half of this so if that spec really upsets you pls don’t continue ;_;
15x18 ended and dean’s ignoring a phone call from sam, who he knows could very much well be in trouble. it was quiet, he was crying, it was sad, we all cried, we were all so happy but also so sad, it was a beautiful tornado of emotions that any writer and actor and director should feel proud of telling.
the issues came first with 15x19 when you had little emotional follow up. idk who inserted the scenes where it appeared dean was really struggling with what happened but he never explained really what happened to anyone. he didn’t say aaaaanything. he didn’t explain. nothing.
there was that report from a set watcher that said in their first scene where they try to give themselves up to chuck and he’s talking about bringing cas back that he was really really emotionial, whereas in 1519 it didn’t seem as emotional as we know he can get, and has already gotten before. but that’s more up for debate because we don’t know that person’s parameters for ‘emotional’
but regardless, dean’s emotional state in 1519 didn’t linger too much on 1518. i feel like you can feel jackles struggling to try and demonstrate that where he could but what also sucks is that he’s not in charge of what takes they use.
the last time we hear dean say cas’ name is when he gets that phone call and it’s lucifer — some more queer coding and the last bit of it we see for the rest of the show.
and after that, literally, i’m serious — like go back and watch the episodes if you don’t believe me — dean never says cas’ name again after that.
so already out of the gate, a man who, through our own past witnessing of his emotional state after cas has gone, should be really just completely frozen. maybe not completely, only bc you’d imagine he’d draw on that inner emotionality and help use it as a tool, and we do get ‘that’s not who i am’ or whatever but there’s still no....impact.
1519 muffled the emotional impact of 1518.
1520 shoved it in the ground and covered it with 8 feet of cement.
1520 has a whole host of issues which like — conspiracy after conspiracy as to what happened exists but the fact remains is i do believe them when they say the final script post-covid wasn’t all too far from the original pre-covid. i know there were reports from 2020 vegas con that one of the actors, i think kim or bri, said they were still working on fine tuning the script — but regardless — i don’t think it was ever going to be too far off.
my complicated emotions on 1520 range from genius episode to oh my god what the fuck episode — but the fact of the matter is we were likely never going to see cas again.
sam mentions him in a group with others, bobby mentions him as an after thought etc etc. the worst thing is that we were likely never going to see cas on screen again because if you did you’d have to put him on the same screen with dean and if that happened the people would want an answer to 1518 straight up
so we replace him with jimmy instead and what likely would have been our last glimpse at a good queercoding, the last strong punch to dean’s 15 mile deep glass ceiling they have on top of him. jimmy was supposed to be dressed like cas, and they were supposed to talk. dean’s reaction to seeing him was supposed to initially be emotional before he realized it wasn’t cas.
but even that wouldn’t have helped 1518 because we still wouldn’t have seen cas.
they never explain how cas ‘helped’ rebuild heaven, how he got out of the empty only two episodes after he got in there, why he doesn’t show his face [which i feel like would have been even more ‘wtf??’ when we saw jimmy but not cas], etc etc. since we didn’t see him on screen, and never was going to see him on screen, i did not believe he was in heaven at all.
all this unspoken dialogue and scenes explaining to us literally, — as dean and sam hunt monsters who literally rip the tongues out of people and dean gets first pied in the face [with a laughing robert singer behind him] and is stabbed in the back and killed — that the lack of emotional response and feedback and story post 1518 was a deeper issue behind the scenes with the creatives.
the problem wasn’t 1518, cas being taken by the empty as part of his deal, etc etc.
the problem was there was no emotional follow up, no contemplating, no empty rescue, no more dean and cas on screen together, etc etc etc.
[which, as part of the meta conspiracy — 1502 cas tells dean ‘we are (real)’ and now they’re not on the screen anymore by the end together soooooo was....any of that real?]
but regardless, spec, meta, and whatever aside
the problem was never 1518. 1518 is at the good kids table. the problem was, and forever will be, the episodes that came right after and didn’t do anything with that incredibly emotional and impactful scene.

Hey I do not know if my phone broke or you deleted the post while I was typing at it, but re: womanizing in the 98 anime
I also find the womanizer thing in 98 off putting, but it seems like he does it only with women or situations that will give him upper hand, or more information, if people think he's a creep. Like with Stefanie, he played the idiot for the upper hand. And with Elizabeth, he's shown as a (mostly) good judge of character, so that one's both getting info, and getting upper hand to prevent sabotage. Marianne feels like he was being a creep just to prevent her genuine interest in him because she also is a good judge of character. And most telling, I feel, is with Milly and Meryl. He never creeps on them. There's nothing he'll gain from it, and he knows it won't scare them off.
Anyway no need to answer publicly (or at all if you did indeed delete the post), I just had so much agreement and feelings on this.
Embarrassingly I did delete it (but saved it in my drafts) because I saw someone that also posted today with pretty similar opinions and like. Idk. I can put it back up if you want.
You’re very right that there doesn’t seem to be any scenes where he’s taking advantage of his reputation and it isn’t for some sort of tactical advantage. Which to me I think was the right move for the anime, there’s a reason why Vash has that reputation but there’s also a reason why Vash is doing those things to warrant the reputation. If there was a scene where he genuinely was a womanizer it would greatly take away from these other moments. I also think, especially for the moments where he’s trying to come off as a creep to Marianne, goes to show how far Vash is willing to go in terms of acting totally nuts to throw someone off the scent, etc
In the post I deleted i was mostly focused on possible moments off screen or that had happened decades before just because he seemed to have a solid grasp of the character he made up for himself and like, where does Vash get his socialization? Being lonely is a very powerful thing. But also he could just be a really great natural actor just from being around humanity so long
Edit: I do also like to add I love this sort of complicated characterization of characters, especially regarding like how a character carries themselves such as flirting without actually wanting the flirting to work but it’s annoying as all get out when people fall for the characters facade and then creates fan characterization for that character based on the facade.

2. least favorite theory
hmmmmmm. this is hard not because i have a lot of theories i dislike. but because the second i see even a Glimpse of something i don't like i instantly scroll away and push it out of my mind. anything about killing the eggs maybe? that'd be unnecessarily cruel to not only the streamers and the community, but to the actors behind them. you're putting them out of a job :(
OH i also have. complicated feelings about the whole "jaiden was raised/created by the federation" thing. i wouldn't say it's my least favorite or something i dislike really. it's just not for me i don't think
35. which of the players have you known about the longest pre qsmp time?
jaiden!!! i have been following her since her first ihascupquake animation from 2014 :] i know i watched Some of the brazilian ccs maybe once or twice, but not enough for me to remember the exact timeframe of
25. drop a lore hot take🔥 (or cold take🧊 who cares)
this is something i've been struggling to put into words for a while now. but something about the way a lot of ppl treat qjaiden..... it rubs me the wrong way. there's so much focus on her vengeance and her being badass and all that stuff to protect the eggs. which isn't out of character necessarily. but i keep thinking about her line of "all i wanted to do was be bobby's mom" and it just. seems off. i think it's how resolved and calm people make her. she's girlbossified. qjaiden is very vulnerable and open and honestly, kind of an anxious wreck a lot of the time. she's doing all this because she has to, or at least she believes she does, and yet she's still uncertain and nervous. idk idk i just feel like there's a lot of erasure of her anxieties and flaws in order to make her this perfect girlboss vengeful mother

my Hot Take™ is that i don't think it's inherently wrong to write the addamses as having conflict within their family. i don't think it's wrong for them to have the same sort of problems and complicated relationships as real families. i think the important thing to remember is that they're inherently kind and caring people, that they genuinely love each other, and that they resolve their conflicts in caring, healthy ways.
for example: i've seen the addams family musical live twice. i love it to bits. one of the main conflicts of the story is that gomez spends a decent amount of time lying to morticia, and morticia knows that he's lying to her and can't figure out why. she feels betrayed that he'd do such a thing - and he feels horrible for doing it, but he promised wednesday he wouldn't tell her the truth until she was ready to share it herself. they argue and fall out - and then at the end, gomez explains all that happened and why he was lying to her, explains that he never meant to hurt her, and apologises for causing her pain. he reminds her of how important she is to him, with a whole grand dance number slash makeout session, and in the end... morticia forgives him. she's still a little upset, and still thinks he went about it the wrong way, but she understands that he was doing it for their daughter and meant no harm, and so she forgives him.
i really liked that storyline, personally, because - well - all couples argue, or have some small level of conflict. the healthiest relationships in the world will have their rough moments. the fact that they argued isn't what matters - it's the way they made up for it that does. they were honest with each other, even when the honest answers didn't paint them in the best light.
(it probably also helped that gomez Not Wanting To Lie was repeatedly emphasised to the audience over the entire span of the show, so you're fully aware of how much it's tearing him up inside, and how he's only doing it because the idea of upsetting wednesday is something he can't stand - but musicals have far more opportunities to talk about characters' innermost thoughts, since they can break into song to explain them, so that may be a little difficult in other art forms.)
the thing is - i study acting at uni level. one thing that is repeatedly stressed to us as actors is that narratives without conflict are impossible, because without conflict happening, there's nothing to resolve. characters have to clash and butt heads and disagree - the point of the story is the resolution of that resulting conflict.
yes, you can absolutely argue that, in addams family media, the conflict should always be primarily caused by an outside force and not the family themselves - it's perfectly fine to have that opinion, and to prefer those storylines! but i think to say it's impossible to write the addamses super healthy happy family dynamic having conflict is just... not true. they're a group of characters with very intense personalities - there are plenty of opportunities for them to butt heads, and plenty of unexpectedly healthy and kind ways for them to work through those conflicts.
it's certainly possible, it's just a little harder to write - because open communication and mutual respect are a little harder to get across in a way that people find interesting, that won't prematurely end the conflict or lead to an unsatisfying conclusion.
i don't know what the point of this post is (or if it even has one) - it's just an opinion piece, really. idk. you're more than welcome to disagree. i just felt like talking about it.
