Showing Character's Confusion
Anonymous asked: My protagonist learns his friend is a doppelgänger and I'm trying to describe the "off" feeling he gets when they reconnect (at the beginning of my story) and he realizes something is wrong. I'm not sure if I should show vs tell since the reader doesn't have experience with the non-doppelgänger version of the friend. I have visual cues that he isn't the same person, but I want to illustrate the unease the protagonist feels around him even though he knows he shouldn't feel that way around his "friend." I thought about having the "friend" hesitate about things he should know, but I don't want to do that all the time. I hope this all makes sense!
[Ask edited for length]
Doppelgängers are portrayed in a variety of ways in folklore and stories, so it's important that you flesh out the rules and conventions by which this doppelgänger operates. For example, does this character know anything about their double? Only some things? What dictates what they do and don't know? Or how much they know? It's important to flesh this out, because you need to know what behaviors (beyond not remembering certain things) serve as red flags to your character that show there's something off.
Think about things like the friend's likes and dislikes, pet peeves, fears, desires, dreams, goals, hobbies and interests, skills and knowledge, past experiences, etc. This will give you some ideas of things the doppelgänger might behave strangely about. For example, maybe the friend hates chips and salsa, but the doppelgänger eagerly gobbles some up one night at dinner. Maybe the friend eats a lot of Mexican food and took Spanish in high school, so it's very concerning when they order a "kwes-uh-dill-uh" rather than saying quesadilla properly. Perhaps the friend loves dogs, but the doppelgänger seems to be afraid of them.
These different aspects of personality can show up in a variety of ways in our lives, so they offer lots of possibilities for showing this character's unexpected behavior rather than you outright stating it. The only other thing you have to do is make sure the reader sees that your character is confused. This can be accomplished a few different ways. For the sake of the example, we'll go with the scenario of the friend (who'd wanted to be a lawyer) scoffing at the notion of seeing a popular legal personality speak. Let's say your character suggests it, and this is their response... "Uh, no thanks," Doppelgänger said with a dismissive wave. "I don't know who Marcia Shapian is and I'm not interested in hearing her speak."
Here are different ways you could show your character's confusion and feeling that something is off: -- Exposition, Telling: It struck Larry as odd that Pete wouldn't jump at the chance to go see Marcia Shapian speak.
-- Exposition, Showing: Larry's brow crumpled. "Yeah, no worries," he said, trying not to frown. "We can go to a movie instead."
-- Internal Monologue: "Yeah, no worries," Larry said. That. Was. Weird. Pete loves Marcia Shapian...
-- Dialogue: "Really? You don't want to see Marcia Shapian? You used to worship the ground she walked on. I feel like I don't even know you anymore."
Happy writing!

Random things that I know
I’m currently on a road trip, so I didn’t have much time on my hands to draw much but I do have a small wip and old sketch I did! Along with just talking about random ideas and things that I know. Which. I mostly did a bunch of research on Delta Junction, Alaska as you will be able to tell soon
Tumblr media
I passed by Delta Junction, and I remembered that they are the city with the most Ukrainian born people in percentage, it’s even higher in ancestry as well! This is because DJ has very similar terrain and climates to Ukraine (I think??) along with the fact there are already many Ukrainians there, there is not much of a language barrier for them! That’s neat :> So I wanted to make DJ as Ukrainian, and this is just one design concept I came up with today too quickly, it is likely to change as I learn more (I don’t have a definitive answer of what gender I’m thinking them to be yet)
Tumblr media
also I think DJ would make BANGER cream rolls. Because I know this lady that lives there that comes to my city every summer and sells cream rolls; she’s done this ever since I was little
Alaska is the windiest state, with a windspeed average of 30 mph; in Juneau they have winds called Taku winds, and in DJ they have winds called Chinook winds
DJ was also known as the “Windy City” and “Little Chicago” by soldiers stationed there, as DJ is big on the military presence stuff
DJ is a very quant and neat place I won’t lie. They have buffalos there sent from Montana!! They now roam a lot around the Delta area, most are within the Delta Bison Sanctuary; I like to imagine DJ tells Alaska to tell Montana the bison are prospering
Colorado has a coin collection due to being the worlds top producer of coins (I think that’s cool)
Cali didn’t know what mosquito repellent was or was a thing until he overheard Maine and Alaska talking about them and asked about it, the other two were horrified he didn’t know (this is a tease cuz my girlfriend didn’t know it was a thing until I asked if she had any once)
Tumblr media
This is an old sketch of a character my girlfriend made! She based them off Mexican culture, specifically this is based on California’s Lone Star flag from way back when
I think DJ loves the idea of having a family, but the opportunity has simply never been given 😞
Talkeetna was considered abandoned in 1910, before getting revived in aboit 1920 thanks to gold rushes, I think she is a little afraid of being abandoned again tho, but she knows Mayor Denali would never do her dirty like that
Hawai’i and Alaska both have the best air quality out of the states, they’re seriously breathing that great non lower 48 stuff. They are prospering. Manifesting.
Louisiana is actually one of the most, if not the most (it changes per article but they remain one of the top 3 always) stressed states, along with Mississippi and New Mexico
uhhhmm this is all I can think of currently. I hope y’all can wait for me to get back home to post regularly again 👻 that would be cool.

Friday, July 4, 1986. A Way Better Fourth of July.
*****
4:30 pm
Hot dogs, cheeseburgers, macaroni salad. American flags, Bruce Springsteen...
Hyde inevitably lowers his voice, to a jaded whisper. "The song doesn't mean what you think it means."
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years old, burning down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go
Kitty, as sharp as a knife, anxiously nudges him. And Jackie swiftly follows suit, as they both hush the seeds of a quiet rebellion. "Shh."
Ignorance is bliss, as Red serves the main course. And Eric serves the macaroni salad.
"I made this, with my very own hands."
Kitty lovingly chuckles. "You used my recipe."
"Well..." Eric nervously laughs. "You got me there, Mom."
The two youngest, away from the gingham-clad picnic table, are happily gurgling in a large playpen. A quiet, raven-haired girl with big blue eyes, and a tiny, curious redhead. The eldest couple's grandbabies, by adoption and by blood.
The older two grandbabies, an olive-skinned boy and a sweet, adorable brunette with blue ribbons in her hair, are munching on small pieces of hot dog and are poking at macaroni salad with plastic forks.
The oldest grandbaby, a seven year old, is reluctantly in the midst of the adults. She feels like she's standing alone, though. The rest of the kids are literal babies, and she's just sort of...there.
But Betsy Kelso takes her duty as watcher very seriously. She even crafted a makeshift badge out of duct tape, just like her dad's.
Like her father, she is prone to hyperbole. "Kate's trying to eat a dandelion."
Eric and Donna nervously glance a few feet over, but are immediately relieved. Instead, Kate has simply picked a dandelion, and is turning it round, and round, and round...
Becca, a few months older and wiser, looks at her like she has two heads. "Gah."
"Aren't they adorable?" Kitty proudly gushes, hand firmly on her heart. "My grandbabies."
Red gruffly groans, but his old heart quietly melts. "You've said that a million times."
"It doesn't make it any less true, Red." Becca is now anxiously crawling around, leaving Kate at a wobbly standstill. "Look, she's exploring."
"She's the one that you need to watch," Red cautions, turning to Jackie and Hyde, "She'll eat the damn...darn dandelions."
Betsy, the fervent watcher, proudly sounds the alarm. "Pop said a bad word!"
Kelso chuckles, as the word "dumbass" is at the tip of Red's tongue. "Get used to it, Bets."
*****
5:00 pm
Dinner is officially over, but the American flags are still fluttering in the breeze. And Bruce Springsteen is still blasting.
Glory days
Well, they'll pass you by, glory days
In the wink of a young girl's eye, glory days
Glory days
Meanwhile, Red and Kitty are proudly perched in lawn chairs, happily clinking their glasses together.
The aging blonde smiles. "You know, I bought that Lee Greenwood cassette."
"God Bless the USA" is a bit corny, even for a proud veteran like him. "I can write a better song than that."
"I'd like to see you try," Kitty lovingly challenges, "I think it's profound. 'And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.'"
"I'd list all the wars." Far from a creative soul, Red concocts a simple list. "Revolutionary, 1812, Mexican-American, Civil..."
She shakes her head. "That doesn't sound like a good song."
"Lee Greenwood isn't even a damn veteran," He gruffly declares, "He's like Eric."
Kitty spies, with her little eye, an adorable little diversion. Hyde and Eric are lying in the playpen, with Hyde propelling a happily squealing Becca in the air, and with Kate lying on Eric's chest.
Then, in a split second, she's back to ground zero. The uncomfortable trenches. "There haven't been any wars for him to fight."
"You know he wouldn't join."
"Well, he'd join the most important ones," Kitty amply defends, before reluctantly acquiscing, "You know he's lippy about 'Nam."
"Don't remind me." He briefly diverts, as Eric compares Becca to the Millennium Falcon. Then, he shakes his head in disdain. "He thinks the Star Wars program is a disgrace to Star Wars."
Kitty sighs, but while happily kicking the can down the road. A tiny pebble, beneath her shoe. "He still hasn't gotten over that Luke and Leia thing."
Red's foot anxiously taps to the rhythm. "Don't remind me."
*****
5:30 pm
He doesn't know why the hell he put in that damn Lee Greenwood cassette.
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
Hyde is muttering something rebellious. Eric is nervously shaking his foot to the rhythm. Laurie is...who the hell knows where.
But at least his two sons are there. He doesn't agree with a lot of their politics, or like a lot of their music, but they're good men.
They surmounted the odds. Hyde isn't dead, roaming in a motorcycle gang, or in prison. Eric is still lippy, and still loves Star Wars, but he doesn't let it define his life. He tries to be the hero of the South Side of Chicago, in his own, weird way.
And because of them, their granddaughters are proudly perched on their laps. He has Becca, and Kitty has Kate. Kitty Jr, of course.
All the while, Becca is sleeping in his arms, as the former basement dwellers lovingly coo.
And predictably, so is Kitty. "You think you're Oscar the grouch, but you're not."
He can't help but smile. "I guess my life isn't garbage, huh?"
In turn, she lovingly kisses him on the cheek. "I'd say it's pretty damn good."

Queer artists 17/30 - Felix D’eon
Felix d'Eon is a contemporary Mexican artist whose work is inspired by "various art-historical styles such as Edwardian fashion and children’s book illustration, golden-era American comics, and Japanese Edo printmaking". His pieces depict scenes of queer love and sexuality in these various artistic genres and historical periods. The figures in his work kiss and embrace in a huge variety of settings openly and without fear, celebrating queer desire and stripping away any associated taboo.
“Initially,” Felix says, “my fantasy about making these kinds of artwork was making paintings that reflected queer people. I wanted to see myself reflected in a work of art because [I hadn’t seen that] exist before.”  Many of Felix's works depict Latin American people and themes, representation that he has also felt the lack of. One of his series reimagines Lotería, a Mexican game of chance using a colourful deck of cards featuring various stock characters, with depictions of queer people, as seen above.
Although his early work most heavily features white and Latino gay men, he has chosen to branch out and depict a huge diversity of cultures and queer experiences, with his more recent pieces including everything from trans mermen to lesbian centaurs to gay astronauts.  “I feel that no one was represented in this artwork except for this very narrow range of people, and I really like the idea of being able to extend this narrative of love and history and just a romantic image of our ancestors to include a wider part of the queer community,” Felix says.
[Image descriptions: A man standing with his hands behind his head, wearing green and red cowboy boots and a pair of red long johns open to reveal his hairy chest, entitled El Oso; a man wearing a pair of leopard print swim briefs and holding a towel with top surgery scars on his chest, entitled El Trans; a rainbow flag also featuring a brown and black stripe draped over a flag pole with a ribbon at the top in blue, pink and white, the colours of the trans flag, entitled La Bandera; two women facing away from the viewer, wearing traditional Mexican dress in the form of a yellow blouse and green skirt and a white blouse and red skirt respectively, one embracing the other while they look at a crescent moon, entitled La Luna]

I just submitted another entry for the Fakemon contest hosted by Subjectively for their Mazah Region. I figured I could share it here too and let people check it out! I’m still working on learning the Sugimori shading style  and I know this doesn’t quite fit right but I am happy with the way it turned out.
More info below the cut!
Pokédex Entry: Long ago, Tauros-fighting was a popular sport in the Mazah region, the most fierce and aggressive among them being prized fighters. Over time, the Tauros began to develop protective armored hides and longer horns to defend themselves, and the Tauros population became quieter and more reserved. Though the cruel practice was made illegal decades ago, Mazian Tauros remains a gentle protector, preferring not to fight or hurt any people or Pokémon. It no longer relies on anger for strength. instead of whipping itself, it uses its tails to harmlessly restrain any threat.
Base Stats: HP: 80 Atk: 98 Def: 150 SpAtk: 30 SpDef: 80 Spd: 52 Total: 490
Design Notes: My original inspiration was from Mexican bull fighting, but I knew I didn't want to make the design dark and grim. I didn't want to frame it with suffering and anger. Instead I wanted to show how Tauros might have changed to adapt to the conditions they were in, developing tougher hides and shielded shoulders to protect themselves from spears and banderillas. As more fierce Tauros were picked for fights, maybe this ended up selectively breeding them down to be quiet and gentle, slow to anger, and reserved. I thought in modern day Mazah, they make good livestock guardian Pokémon, protecting herds of Miltank or Mareep from wild Pokémon or human thieves. I wanted its status as a natural protector to be front and center within its stats and its abilities. Giving it the abilities Friend Guard and Battle Armor were the obvious choices. Giving it Defiant as its hidden ability felt emblematic of its defiance of cruelty, becoming stronger the more it opposes foes that would try to hurt it or its friends.
On a more physical level... The shape of the horns were inspired by round-headed Aztec clubs called quauholōlli. The tassels decorating them were inspired by the banderillas ('little flags') that are used in bull fighting to both enrage and weaken the bull. The shields on Mazian Tauros's shoulders were inspired by Mesoamerican chīmalli shields, often decorated in geometric spiral patterns and adorned with feather tassels. Mazian Tauros's tails were inspired by bolas, which were traditionally thrown weapons but their function was to tangle around the feet of enemies or game to trip them up. The colorful mane along Mazian Tauros's head and neck was inspired by myriad colorful headdresses worn by several Mesoamerican peoples for both ceremony and battle. It's also cropped short, a bit like a Roman helmet or a roached mane on a horse. I pulled colors from several different works of Aztec art and articles of traditional clothing. Bright colors –  especially red, yellow, green, and blue – were often used, so I wanted Mazian Tauros to reflect the bright colors used in those traditional crafts.

Remember The Alamo
Commandancy of the The Alamo
Bejar, Feby. 24th. 1836
To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World-
Fellow Citizens & compatriots-
I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna - I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man - The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken - I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls - I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch - The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country - Victory or Death.
William Barret Travis.
Lt. Col.comdt.
P. S. The Lord is on our side - When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn - We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.

Some WTTT New Mexico Headcanons
I’ve lived in like 8 states in my life so I figured I’d do some WTTT headcanons based on my experiences living in each of them. First up is New Mexico bc I love him.
(Disclaimer: These are based on observations I made from living in northern New Mexico for 2 years. I’m not a native New Mexican, and as such, there are definitely cultural subtleties I’m sure I missed. Please let me know if there’s anything you would add or change! Also, I’m pretty sure a few of these things are already canon in WTTT but hey...)
Tumblr media
·  He bonds with Nevada about alien/government conspiracy theories. (Have he and Nevada ever interacted in canon? I can’t remember…but if they do, it should be about aliens. Or nukes.)
·   New Mexico is very matter-of-fact, almost too casual about his supernatural observations. Like yeah, he saw some weird grey dudes in a spaceship abduct a cow, but that’s just a Tuesday in Burque, no? He’s seen weirder…
·   He complains whenever the humidity reaches 30% or higher. (Florida is extremely confused by this, refusing to believe that the humidity can get lower than 50%)
·   He doesn’t really care about being on time to things. His philosophy is that “I’ll get there when I get there.”
·   He’s okay with simplicity and tradition. He doesn’t really seek out drastic change, and he’s okay with doing things the way he’s always done them because “if it works, it works, no?” As a result, he’s very down-to-earth and had a lot of pride in himself and his people.
·   He’s a really good cook, and he doesn’t just make chile. Some of his other staple foods include posole (hominy), calabacitas (sauteed zucchini and summer squash), carne adovada (pork marinated in red chile), sopapillas (pillow shaped fried pastry served with honey), and biscochitos (a crisp butter cookie flavored with sugar, cinnamon, and anise).
·   He will get BIG MAD if you call any of the above recipes “Mexican food.”
·    He loves f***ing with people. He’s a huge prankster and will NOT hesitate to shit-talk you in front of everyone. (But in a friendly way)
·    His politics are hard to classify. He’s known as a “blue state” but he’s not particularly liberal. He’s pretty cynical about politics, believing wholeheartedly that the U.S. government is corrupt and he has to look out for himself because no one else will (historically, he’s not wrong). Most of his political beliefs come from that undercurrent of defiance.
·    He has no idea what a “Cardi B” is, but jams música nuevo mexicana and Selena on the regular. He also loves classic rock. (Blame Route 66 nostalgia.)
·    He doesn’t say much to the other states outside of his circle, but he loves to chat for hours with people he knows well. It’s kind of a cliché, but he literally does know pretty much everyone… and their mom, and their grandma, and their dog, and all their great-uncles going back 5 generations…
·   He’s pretty chill and laid-back most of the time, but the following things inevitably make him *BIG MAD*
-Anyone (looking at you, Colorado) that dares to call his chile inferior.
-Getting compared to Mexico/being called Mexican.
             -Texas, in general. For reasons.
-Breaking Bad references (It gets old.)
-People who try to whitewash NM’s history or culture/people that forget he existed for literal centuries before 1912.
·   He’s a member of the “cool flag club.” He’s not quite as obsessed with his flag as Maryland is, but almost. Don’t let his comment in his “welcome” episode fool you; he already has at least 5 Zia sun tattoos. He conveniently ignores the fact that it’s technically cultural appropriation.
·    He creates many kinds of art and his work is extremely quirky. When asked to explain the thought process behind his art, he’ll say something like “I dunno, it came to me in a dream, man.”
·    He actually doesn’t hate Colorado. Besides the chile rivalry, they get along relatively well. He definitely gives off cynical big brother vibes, with Colorado being the ditzy little brother whose head is always (literally and figuratively) in the clouds. New Mexico thinks Colorado is kind of an idiot, but in an affectionate way. NM loves shit-talking him (see above) but half the time it goes way over Colorado’s head.

It is February 24th. 188 years ago today, William Travis wrote probably the most famous document in the annals of Texas history. Remarkably, given the conditions under which it was written and sent out from the Alamo, Travis' letter still exists.

Following up on that reblog about asks.
You mentioned that you used to live in the valley. How long did you live here and what drew/pushed you away?
I was born and raised there. So of course I couldn't wait to get away for college, though I only made it to San Antonio. And then I went back for grad school at what was still UT Pan Am, and then away for 3 years for my husband's grad school and then directly back because that's where my husband happened to get a job. I haven't lived there in nine years, but I still say home when I'm talking about it. So I don't feel like I truly moved away until I was 30.
The Valley that existed when I was a teenager in the 90s is gone. Long gone. Like back then the big bookstore was a tiny Walden's at La Plaza mall. (And I spent so many hours there.) So a lot of why I wanted to leave isn't even relevant anymore. I just wanted out and I wanted more. It was also probably fueled by some internalized racism, but also the fear that despite being told I could do anything, I would go to Pan Am and then get my teaching certification, and then just teach there in the Valley and have the exact same life my parents did.
And at the time it was like culture? What culture? This is just home. Oh boy I had no idea. (But also in my defense we were SO small town back then. It was *only* our weirdo border culture. It did start getting better in my late 20s, but my mom was still pushing for me to stay there and teach.) Then raising my kid largely in the Midwest made it so hard to keep them in touch with our culture. It was all stuff I never had to think about. Mariachis, and folklorico, and all the stuff at the history museum my aunt would take me to and just hearing Spanish day to day... and that's all been on me. Before I left, I never had to think about being Mexican because it was all right there. I had to a little in college, because it is a very white school, but still proud of its place in San Antonio. But moving to Minnesota? Even though I am white latina, for the first time ever I was VERY aware I'm a minority, and in a way that didn't always feel safe. (Highly ironic as I got so so many instances of "Well at least you're safe now that you moved here." Like, one fuck you I never said we left because it was unsafe. Two fuck your confederate flag sticker. Do you even know what side Minnesota was on in that war? Three we literally have one of the lowest murder rates in the country.) And I responded to that by becoming more proud of my heritage and like aggressively latina. I worked on my Spanish (still lousy), and I learned to make all the foods I took for granted that I could just go out for. So I think that's what is always going to keep me in central and south Texas. It's safe and it's home and it's where my family is. (Dad's family has been out in Starr county since, from what I can tell, about the time Texas became Texas.)
So that was a very long winded way of saying Puro 956, but I needed to live somewhere else. Four hours away from my mom is also a bonus. I love her but... we need space. The dream is we win the lotto and move back and open a really nice theatre and get Broadway touring shows to come down because it is absolutely absurd that it is the fifth largest metroplex in Texas but there is no big theatre, and tickets will always be pay what you can, and we'll do special shows for all the high school kids. But I probably won't be moving back til that happens.

my controversial Jerma985 take is that it’s the first day of school. i wake up at 7 AM but the FACT is I can never get off of my mattress. The first thing I do is watch Jerma’s ice challenge video, then I work on my splatoon au fanart of Jerma and Vinny Vince Sauce. When I get up, I salute to the boston mets flag hung on my wall. I sing, “I'm the giant rat who makes all of da rules, lets see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into.” Then I rush downstairs and pour myself a bowl of straight Adderall doused in sprite. After breakfast I start to get ready for school. I put on my green mexican tshirt. Then I put on my cat ear headband and bright pink belled collar. I catch the bus just in time and put on eminem on my phone, humming “Knees weak moms spaghetti” The bus drops me off and when I enter the school doors, someone comes up to me and says “nice cat ears, JERMA STAN” and throws a cup of coffee at me, staining my clothes. “U-uh yeah nice once chat” I mutter under my breath, and I pull out my custom scout baseball bat that i bought for $53 on Redbubble. They tremble before me begging me not to hurt them. i let them off with a warning and let them know that i have the power of Jerma985 and Oneyplays by my side. During my morning classes I can barely keep my eyes open, the only thing preventing me from falling asleep is me secretly watching the current Spore charity stream from my phone under my desk. For lunch I order boneless chicken wings and manage to pick it up from the local Burgerking before the bell rings. I wolf the whole meal down while i run to class hoping I won’t be late. I apologize to the teacher, Mr. Jeremy, but he says it’s okay because it’s still just the first day of school. For todays class he teaches how to do a .08 sec boat clutch from the sea of thieves playthrough. I try to pay attention but I can’t stop doodling the Fallout new vegas crew in my notebook. After school is finally over, I go home and enter Jerma’s discord vc where everyone is calling out for Scatmans world. I spend an hour doing homework while simultaneously switching tabs between Discord, Twitter, and the archive of the ballfondler stream, and watching Jerma tiktok fancams in the background. At 5:30 i boot up TF2 and enter the server ip for uncle danes second lobby. A Jerma985 hater hacks the server and starts saying “all of Jerma nation is going to superhell” Then Vinny and Lazypurple walk on stage holding the lgbt ally flag and then destroys the hacker with a single beam of light. everyone starts clapping and cheering. Then, a single message pops up on the screen: “Jerma has joined the game.” Jerma walks onto stage to reveal a button sealed under a trap door. He says, “it was never meant to be” and the entire server explodes and becomes engulfed in flames. The server shuts down. Uncle danetopia is over. Afterwards, I participate in #TF2UDAselfiday and immediately get 1.2k retweets and 64k likes. Then I read the entirety of Nancy Drew mystery of the lighthouse while listening to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls and cry. Finally, I go to bed with my Red Sox tee shirt on listening to Happy Birthday once again (slowed and reverb). As i hear Jerma sing “Micheal, such a good boy this year, open up your gifts while we all cheer” i slowly drift into sleep, ready for a full night’s rest.

F1 Drivers as Poems Day 7/22—Sergio Pérez—“All of Us,” Erika L. Sánchez 🌟
“Every day I am born like this— No chingues. Nothing happens for the first time.”
Alt text for Photo 1: A photo of Sergio Pérez, an early-30s Mexican Formula 1 racer wearing a Red Bull Racing suit, pursing his lips and pumping his fist in pride in front of a large Mexican flag. There is a golden line drawing of an eye in the top left corner and a golden line drawing of an open door with a “vacant” sign next to it in the bottom right. Thin, gold sans serif text in all caps reads “Sergio Pérez” in the top right corner.
Alt text for Photo 2: A text-based graphic on a red background with the same line drawings and driver’s name. Off-white serif text in the middle reads: “Every day I am born like this— / No chingues. Nothing happens / for the first time. Not the neon / sign that says vacant, not the men / nor the jackals who resemble them. / I take my bones inscribed by those / who came before, and learn / to court myself under a violence / of stars.” Thin, gold sans serif text in all caps beneath the poem reads “—Erika L. Sánchez, “All of Us”.”

Louis Tomlinson made it clear, for the first time in Guadalajara, that he has the ingredients for a successful solo career. 9 thousand 900 attendees or "Louies", as his fans are known, this Sunday night at the Tel Auditorium.
The pop-rock singer who rose to fame as part of One Direction opened the show with "We Made It," from his 2020 debut album Walls, and that song choice seemed to sum up the sentiment of the delayed 2020 tour. due to the coronavirus pandemic, which finally got going.
“Hello Guadalajara! Thank you, all of you make this concert possible. This tour has been absolutely incredible," said the artist, while the crowd shouted as loud as possible.
Accompanied by a five-piece band on a stage with five screens and colored lighting, Louis Tomlinson kept the energy high, a task that seemed easy enough considering the intrinsic excitement of the crowd.
His nearly 90-minute set leaned heavily on Walls, with songs like "Too Young," "Two of Us," "Habit," "Always You," "Don't Let It Break Your Heart," and "Fearless." ", catchy pop that left the audience singing at the top of their lungs.
During "Only the Brave," the crowd raised LGBT+ flags and paraphernalia in celebration of Pride Month.
Several times between songs, the 30-year-old singer stopped to comment on the "codependency" between him and his fans. Praising them as the most dedicated fanbase he has ever seen and commenting that he was thankful to be in the city.
"Let me tell you that I waited seven years (since the end of One Direction) for today's concert. That's why I will offer it to you with all my heart," he commented.
Perhaps the only drawback of the show was the scarcity of original material, although it was not his fault. Naturally, it happens when such a big name goes on tour for an album. His former bandmate Harry Styles had the same problem when he toured his first solo album in 2017.
Still, Tomlinson gave his fans the One Direction they needed, embracing his roots with three songs from the boyband that went on indefinite hiatus in 2015, spread throughout the show: "Drag Me Down," "Little Black Dress." and "Through the Dark".
He not only completed the set with 1D songs, but also some covers. He sang his version of Kings of Leon's "Beautiful War" and got rockin' hard on Catfish and the Bottlemen's "7."
After an abrupt closing of the title track, "Walls", and followed by a brief time out, the fans repeated in unison: "Louis, brother, you're already Mexican!"
Tomlinson and the band recovered to offer an additional song, "Kill My Mind".
On its own, the theme was a performance of Tomlinson at his best. Paying homage to mid-'90s Britpop, the song's chorus rocked the place. The track reached new heights as his concert finale, leaving the audience with one last taste of his strong stage presence.

Oregon Again Welcomes PCT Thru-hikers
Tumblr media
Janet Eastman, who lives in the Ashland area, periodically writes a piece about the PCT. Again this year she has documented the annual migration of PCT hikers through Oregon. This is an excerpt of her story that appeared in the August 21st issue of The Oregonian.
To me, the key comment included in this article is that of the PCTA's Scott Wilkinson who observed that, "uninterrupted end-to-end hikes may continue to be more difficult.” Although there will still be plenty who attempt the uninterrupted thru-hike, more and more hikers may be forced to consider section hiking the PCT.
By Janet Eastman
Ashland’s stars of summer arrive slowly, on sturdy legs hefting carefully stuffed backpacks, and introducing themselves by their trail names like Butters and Giggles.
By the time northbound Pacific Crest Trail thru-hikers cross into Oregon, they have forged 1,720 miles from the bottom of California, through deserts, over mountains and out of unexpected situations, despite years of planning.
The majority of hikers who depart from the trail’s southern terminus, near Campo, California, and move through steep, snowy, soggy, windy and hot conditions at about 25 miles a day, show up in Ashland in August.
This year, many of these hikers were stopped in their tracks by the 55,500-acre McKinney fire in California’s northern Siskiyou County.
On July 30, around 60 hikers in the Red Buttes Wilderness were taken to safety by Oregon’s Jackson County sheriff search and rescue team and bus drivers with the Rogue Valley Transportation District while others gathered 100 miles south in tiny Etna, where they camped in the Johnson-Joss Park and pondered their future.
Their goal of entering the green tunnel of Oregon on foot was over.
Many were shuttled 66 miles on I-5 from Etna to Ashland in buses or by police driving vans, or in the back of cars driven by volunteers.
The endurance hikers, who are miserly with their few days off the trail — called “zero days” — were greeted by smoke and ash, red flag fire risk conditions and lightning, and frantic innkeepers at booked hostels and budget motels.
Thru-hikers Craig Marshall of upstate New York (trail name Butters) and Nadine Osterloh (trail name Giggles) of Bonn, Germany, said they had a mix of emotions.
They were grateful to be safe at the shelter, but they felt guilty taking one of the beds.
And like other long-distance hikers on a schedule to weave through the West Coast when the weather is in their favor were eager to get going.
“We are used to hiking and walking, and now we’re on hold,” said Osterloh.
Where to go?
On Aug. 2, the pack was ready to move again. But in which direction?
Dave (“Floppy”) Kim of Philadelphia started at Campo, steps north of the Mexican border, on May 4 and about 13 weeks later he was in Ashland, which is between exits 11 and 19 off of I-5. Here, he heard options from other thru-hikers.
Return to the trail, either near Callahan’s Mountain Lodge at exit 6 or head east on Oregon Highway 66 for 20 miles to the Pacific Crest-Green Springs Mountain Connector Trail, or about 35 miles northeast to Fish Lake in the Cascade Range to connect to OR-140 north to Crater Lake.
A trail north of Crater Lake is closed for roughly 60 miles due to the Windigo Pass and Tolo Mountain fires, and there was another closure near Mount Jefferson, which burned in the 2020 Lionshead fire.
The closures mean “this season’s thru-hikers will definitely get mixed up and even more spread out along the trail,” said Scott Wilkinson of the Pacific Crest Trail Association.
“Given climate change-driven drought, wildfires and other extreme weather events over the past few years, this could be characterized as the new normal and not unusual,” he added.
Trail closures are also caused by flooding and erosion, and used for habitat protection of endangered species, Wilkinson said.
Uninterrupted end-to-end hikes “may continue to be more difficult,” Wilkinson said, but “the PCT is still a spectacular wild and scenic experience” for day outings, weekend trips and multi-day section trips.
Some thru-hikers in Ashland are throwing up their hands over the road blocks, and heading north on the Oregon Coast Trail. Or they are taking a Greyhound bus to Portland to cross the Columbia River on the Bridge of the Gods and continue on the PCT to the Canadian border.
“This will affect us,” said Candy Boerwinkle of the Ashland Commons hostel on Tuesday. For days, she said her phone was ringing off the hook, with calls from stranded hikers.
Her hostel is typically booked all of July and August, and she didn’t know how she could accommodate everyone.
Then she started receiving cancellations from hikers who decided to skip Oregon.
“There are 27 people checking out today, and only four are checking in,” she said.
The iconic Callahan’s Lodge, in the shadow of Mount Ashland and a short walk from the Pacific Crest Trail, is forwarding some thru-hikers’ mailed care packages to their new destination, said employee Forrest Eldred.
“We’re sending the care packages to towns near Crater Lake or to Bend, or returning them to the sender,” said Eldred on Tuesday. “Some hikers hope to circle back here.”
Callahan’s is still offering lodging, all-you-can eat pancake and egg breakfasts and spaghetti dinners, as well as $16-a-night camping; $25 for backpackers who want to shower and use the laundry.
“Floppy” Kim hopes to come back, to hike the 170-mile gap from Shasta to Ashland.
On Tuesday afternoon, he and Johannes (“Coach”) Popp of Frankfurt, Germany, returned to hiking at the Pacific Crest-Green Springs Mountain Connector Trail, elevation 4,940 feet.
“This hike is 90% mental and 10% physical,” said Kim, who averages 22 miles a day and has worn out two pairs of boots.
More than boots needed
Hiking 2,663 miles on narrow dirt trails from California to Canada takes more than stamina. Success relies on strategizing and adapting when reality dashes best laid plans, said Lauren (“Grandpa”) Schuster, 24, of Atlanta.
She made it from Campo to Etna before forest infernos instantly upended her goal to complete the entire Pacific Crest Trail on foot.
On Sunday, Schuster rode into Ashland and confessed she has been “obsessed” with the PCT even before she read Portland author Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling memoir, “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.”
Schuster’s months-long trek was made possible by another dashed dream. She was unable to travel in the Peace Corps after she graduated from college in 2020 because of COVID-19. Hiking the PCT became her Plan B.
Two zero days in Ashland had Schuster and a dozen of her closest trail friends pacing around the city and their Airbnb rental, and considering their rerouting options.
Their decision: to reach Crater Lake in four days, then hitch past the Windigo Pass and Tolo Mountain fires closure and keep going north.
“It’s up in the air” how the group will eventually reach Washington state, Schuster said. Then she paused and added the traditional PCT mantra: “The trail provides.”
On Tuesday morning, she and Steve (“Funfact”) Jacobs of Salt Lake City, waited for the rest of their trail family, who started on this journey as strangers on April 5.
Jacobs will celebrate his 35th birthday on the trail Thursday and the tradition for this group is to receive a pastry with a candle, a golden paper crown and a Happy Birthday card drawn by Schuster.
The trail is about give and take, said Jacobs, who contributes “fun facts” to conversation such as mayonnaise can’t emulsify in a lightning storm.
PCT hikers’ star appeal
By the time northbound PCT hikers reach Oregon, they have faced daunting challenges and have succeeded, said John Kerr, who is one of the leaders of day hikes organized by the all-volunteer Ashland Hiking Group.
“PCT hikers know by now they will complete the journey of a lifetime,” he continued. “They are full of smiles despite what lies ahead of them, another 900 miles. And they are universally friendly, even when we break their stride as they step aside.”
PCT thru-hikers are mostly in their 20s and 30s.
“What I love most is seeing people, especially the young, who have gained the confidence in themselves to succeed in whatever else they may dream of doing,” said Kerr, who lives outside of Ashland. “They have no fear of what lies ahead. Last week we met a hiker who had done the journey wearing a prosthesis. Now that was inspiring.”
To Ashland residents, thru-hikers represent hard-earned athleticism, a deep appreciation of nature and the value of taking time off.
People often give thru-hikers a place to stay and rides to the trailhead, and even offer to pick up the tab for a meal or beer.
“They treat us like we’re heroes,” said “Coach” Popp. “But we’re just hikers.”

last song: The Empty Boat - Caetano Veloso
last/show series: proper Our Flag Means Death is sooooo funny, soft and Taika looks sooooo 🔥
currently watching: House of The Dragon (surprisingly good and entertaining? Idk last time I heard, the infamous D&D were at the helm but seems they got rid of them and GRR Martin is very involved so that explains it).  Star Trek Lower Decks S3, this series keeps getting better and better, great characterisation that pushes the plot forward 👍 Also rewatching Succession (almost done with S1). Picking up Rick and Morty S5, and almost done with all of Tobias Menzies' scenes in Outlander (Tysm fast forward option on Netflix 🙏), it's a crime against the arts that such a great character as BJR ended up in a series like that; Tobe's performance was simply 🔥
favorite colour: black, green and blue (don't ask me to pick just one).
sweet, spicy or savoury: Spicy (tho savoury comes second); I'm a proper Mexican so most of our/my food has to be properly seasoned one way or another, and usually favour spicy cuisines (honourable exceptions and not completely: Japanese and Lebanese cuisines).
currently reading: like August I'm a mess with my readings, but unlike her who's the goat at reading, I read mostly pdfs and sections of books so I'll hardly make it to like 3 books proper this year lmao currently reading some stuff for work and a paper I'm working on, but also re-reading The Brothers Karamazov cos I'm turning 30 so it's reasonable to retake such an existential and heavy book.
what i'm working on: currently helping my boss with some renovations at her office (while also not getting my payment from the government office that's in charge of this until further notice 💀) scrambling to get my shit together, have to finish my study plan for some English classes I'll be giving at a uni, finally getting everything ready for opening my massage parlor next week. Still figuring out the PhD thing (been feeling kinda mushy abt LDN lately, a g a i n). Aside from that, picking up my Russian and Nahuatl lessons cos I've been lagging badly there (it's the depression).
currently obsessed with: The Terror (2018), didn't expect to fall in love so deeply with this cold boys on a boat show 💚 it also introduced me to Jared Harris and rekindled my love for Tobe sooo. Other obsessions: 'Remember my name' by Mitski and 'Avalanche' by Leonard Cohen
