having now seen the sea beast and some reactions to it: i think it is actually very important and meaningful that the story didn’t have maisie become like a sea monster biologist! i think it’s really important that they decided to simply stop interacting with the creatures at all and leave the deeper waters to them. i think people forget or aren’t aware of the ways science and scientific pursuit has propped up or been used as a justification for imperialism and expansionism and colonialism. it’s not a neutral profession or goal. of course for us, the audience, it would have been really fun and cool and interesting to learn more about the creatures and maybe even see humans bonding with them, but that’s really not in line with the message of the movie and it’s honestly refreshing that they went that route.

no offence but the reason tumblr is “dying” is, well, yes, of course the cursed like/reblog ratio and the change in user behaviour (because of people being used to how instagram and tiktok work) BUT also the lack of weekly shows. i say it with my whole chest, they don't produce captivating and engaging stupid weekly tv shows anymore because streaming killed that so you have spikes of activity here when Something happens in general fandom or up to three days after a new season of whatever drops and then it's a wasteland. this is obviously an old woman yelling at a cloud missing supernatural and the vampire diaries and pretty little liars and all these other shows type of post but honestly give me back weekly tv shows where i have something to watch for 40 minutes almost every day of the week after work so then i can read and reblog it on tumblr give it back for the sake of my sanity

what is special about public domain is that you can SELL him. you could take a screenshot and sell it on a tshirt. you can use him to advertise your plumbing business. people have already uploaded and monetized the original film.

so i'm gonna take a moment to talk about the composition of mr. monokuma after class (which for some reason is translated here as mr. monokuma's tutoring, but like. not gonna fight it), and i'm gonna do it in the least musical terms possible because i don't know - or don't remember! - what those terms are.

and like. there are two distinct themes/segments in the piece - the main theme, which it opens with and then repeats once (with variation), and then the second theme, which is kind of like a cool down segment that does a trick where you think it's going to end but then doesn't and goes right back to that double loop of the main theme.

and you could be tricked into thinking that it's literally just a double loop of the main theme because the change the second time through is subtle, but it's important.

roughly 50 seconds in (52, if i'm precise, maybe 51 if i didn't look quick enough), there's a strings section. it's all of two notes.

but for a song that otherwise feels like junko's out here throwing a party, that subtle, blink-and-you'll-miss-it section is very much not a party. it's a little minor tragedy.

the first time i caught it, i thought it was just there in the end, but no, it's there in the first bit of the theme, too.

and like, yes, you can make the argument that it's about the surrounding all the things and how tense they are, but like. mr. monokuma after class is the herald of monokuma himself. it is his theme more than it is anything else, which means it's just as much junko's theme.

and that little bit of bitter underlying the chaotic dance that is the rest of the song is a signifier of her frame of mind - of the mastermind's frame of mind underlying the chaotic dance that is monokuma.

and it is so important to me.
