Anyone saying the live adaptation of ATLA was bad, does not remember the series well and/or does not understand how adaptation from cartoon to live action has to function. Is it identical to the original? No. Should it be? No. It's called adaptation not remake/remaster, dummies. I loved shifting more of the Zuko/Iroh relationship earlier and to the forefront. Y'all do not remember Iroh well from season 1. His ass got a whole retcon/rewrite to gloss over the very anime trope of "gluttonous pervy old man" to "talented and emotional statesman who is playing a role". THAT is this Iroh, just from the start.
Is the series "darker"? Yes. Is it ANY different from the darkness of the original? Nope, we just freak out watching real people burn to death. Because yeah a FUCKTON of people burned to death and most of the characters are orphaned, lost one parent, or were traumatized by their parents (or all three Zuko you over achiever). If you just now realized that or disagree, go rewatch the series. The message was always "the world is bleak but the youth will always fight for a better one, so we should listen and help them". In what way was that altered?
Oh you didn't get to see the canyon crawlers or elephant seal riding?? Ooooh poor baby, you miss the filler arcs. Yup, they were fun episodes, but they were very much episodes about teaching little kids morality. That's not this show. It is clearly geared towards an older audience. I am rewatching the ATLA cartoon and I skimmed most of season one, watching it but doing other stuff, because it was a bunch of filler. And the live action literally name drops that those things happen!!!! They just do not have the time or inclination to make a shot-for-shot live action remake. Because that's not what this is. Again, ADAPTATION.
It is more blatant about the message now, and somehow y'all still missed it. It added more lore from the books, cooler fights, more spirit world, more relationship movement. All the things from the original, just moved up a season. Which, my sweet ding dongs, will mean MORE OF THE SEASON 2 AND 3 CAN BE DONE SHOT FOR SHOT. Starting emotional arcs sooner rather than later could mean we get more later, when there is less filler! We could get the swamp benders episode in full. We could get the entire wrestling match. Hama. Boiling Rock. EMBER ISLAND PLAYERS. We could get everything! Yeah I could be wrong, but I could be right. And isn't the god damn Jeezy creezy point of the show that it's not all bad? To find the good?
In closing, any adaptation that gives me this June, Azula, Kyoshi, and the hottest tribe ever (how is everyone on the water tribe so attractive?!?!?) is not bad in my eyes. The acting was great, bending was sick, writing was solid as the original (y'all don't remember how corny and dramatic the show was so you? EIP were there for a reason). Give this an honest chance. It's not the original, but it shouldn't be. Because we already have that, we don't need another.

Also: it was lost on me as a teen viewer why Faith goes back at the end of 4x16. I kind of got it but it genuinely hit me in this recent rewatch like
FAITH wants to run, but she knows Buffy wouldn’t and so she has to go back because she’s BUFFY now and Buffy is better than Faith. Buffy is a good person. Buffy would never leave it as someone else’s problem. Faith refuses to run because she’s In Buffy and she refuses to make Buffy as bad & disgusting as her!! I’m blowing myself up!!
She goes into full on panic when Riley is trying to be like actual-intimate, not quickie intimate. And like part of that is ABSOLUTELY her trauma & the fact that people have been “kind” to her so often to take advantage of her. But she’s also freaking out because this guy is trying to take advantage of BUFFY. Faith is used to sleazeballs saying & doing whatever to get to her & she tells herself she’s fine with it. But like having to be on the receiving end of genuine intimacy & kindness (especially from someone she doesn’t know how to say the right thing for, ie telling Joyce she’ll visit & Willow she’ll protect her)?
Like her instinct is already to be nasty and keep people at bay ie Tara, but someone trying to make HER be vulnerable & melting down and then in turn freaking out bc this guy MUST be taking advantage of Buffy?
Bri she loves her so much. Bri I’m crying. Bri she goes to such ridiculous lengths in her Crazy Girl Arc in Sunnydale. on some level it’s because she needs Buffy to hate her as much as she hates herself. But there is no way her LA Sequel moment is not in some way influenced by feeling Buffy’s residual emotions when they swap back & going “oh yeah wow I’m literally so bad, I can’t be fixed I need to die” and then goes of the handle AGAIN and tries the same tactic on Angel who recognizes it immediately.z
I’m rambling but ugh oh my god. I need a minute. I can’t take this. I can’t take Faith doing the absolute most to try and push everyone away & make them hate her even more as herself! And then doing the inverse as Buffy both because Faith doesn’t want to feel alone AND because she doesn’t want to ruin Buffy the way she ruined herself?
Evil. Evil!
Yeah it's definitely really tragic and deeply interesting that faith's view of herself by that point is that she's SO fundamentally Bad that she needs the pretense of being someone else (and BUFFY specifically) to do good.
There's lots of good meta out there about faith's implied sexual trauma and how that intersects with her violation of riley. I think that definitely one of the most fucked up and sad parts of it is how it's literally riley saying he loves buffy that makes faith freak out. "who are you? what do you want with her?" the stutter in faith's voice, the breathlessness. it's sheer terror. and it's horrible. and it ends with faith, in buffy's body, beating her own face bloody, in tears, "you're digusting," she screams at her own face. "you're nothing."
and promptly runs off to LA to try to get herself killed.
god, the whole arc is just brutal and devastating and gorgeous. even faith's ultimate decision to turn herself in and go to prison is rooted in what she imagines buffy would want.
faith's arc of how can i make buffy like me -> how can i make buffy hate me -> how can i make buffy kill me -> how can i make buffy pay for not killing me -> how can she ever forgive me -> how can i help her is SO good. i wish we'd had so much more faith in s7. the parts we get are tantalizing but i could have done with an entire season of weird divorced reconciliation vibes and pining. alas.

Good Omens s2 thoughts!
I was expecting it to be really fanservicey based on the reviews going woooo it's so fanservicey! But ... it only felt fanservicey in that the fans really wanted to see Aziraphale and Crowley interact more, and so we got more episodes and they're the main feature.
Crowley's angelic hair killed me, what on EARTH was that.
Muriel's so cute, oh my god, they're so cute I love them so much they should have been in so much more of the show.
Is it just me or is the sound mixing/leveling really bad? I feel like I missed a lot of lines all over the place.
MAGGIE AND NINA! They work as A/C parallels both ways, don't they? Like, obviously Maggie is the Sunshiney One and Nina is the Grumpy One, but Maggie's also the one who stands up to the demons, and Nina's abusive relationship isn't far from Aziraphale's with Heaven.
I did think that setting the magic show stuff right after the Blitz shenanigans undercut the Blitz shenanigans. Also felt like Elspeth accepted her gf's death and the selling of her body pretty fast. need to rewatch that one.
But I loved that Crowley addressed the fact that Gabriel told Aziraphale to shut up and die - you want to talk fanservice, that's fanservice.
LOVED THE BALL! The seamstress conversation ... (There was also "C.M.O.T. Dibbler" on the laudanum bottle in The Resurrection Men.)
More actual fanservice: Gabriel and Beelzebub alliance/romance. I do find it kind of funny that "Everyday" is their song ... I was imagining Aziraphale trying to take steps toward liking modern music for Crowley by listening to dorky 1950s pop (/affectionate).
VERY obvious A/C parallel though, yikes, like it treads over the line from "cute" to "gratuitous". But it could just be that I never got into Gabriel/Beelzebub during the interim. But like ... there's a LOT of character development necessary to make me believe that someone as shitty as s1 Gabriel could fall in love with anyone at all let alone an opponent, and we didn't really get any of it.
It's also a bit weird to follow the acceptance of this frankly bizarre relationship with Maggie and Nina, who make a lot more sense and have more of an arc together, giving the "you can't just push us together, we need time" speech?
Whyyyyy would Aziraphale still be on the "Heaven is good" train after like the entire point of the first season being that he learns that choosing to be their own side >>>>>> working for Heaven?
(I have already come around on this jsyk. I absolutely buy that his takeaway from Notmageddon was that God meant for him and Crowley and Adam et al. to stop it, and that the real problem was that Michael, Gabriel et al. wanted it for their own messy reasons.)
Oh man, Crowley hates trying to express how he feels and I love it.
fjdskljfkldsjfljsdkfjlksjflkdsjlkfjlkdsjflksdjfkjlksjflkdsjflkjskfjslkJAGFSJDLK
So on the one hand I'm like, "Good, an angsty ending, nothing like that to light a fire under a fandom and get them writing the most passionate fix-it fic"
On the other, what an INCREDIBLE bait-and-switch, showing us the kiss in the "queer liplock sizzle reel" and then having it be entirely one-sided and Aziraphale freaked out afterward. I am living. This is studio malfeasance at its finest and I am frankly delighted to have been fucked with.
Also lmao Metatron replacing Gabriel as the abusive boyfriend in all the AUs when?

TW: This post discusses suicidal ideation of a fictional character
youtube
I’ve been rewatching Cobra Kai with my mom and I have so many thoughts about this interaction that I wanted to share because it’s this tiny moment I never thought about before but I feel like it has so many implications for Robby’s whole character arc.
So one thing that stood out to me specifically other than how much all the adults let all the kids in this show down was something Shannon said to Daniel while Robby was eating right before they called the police.
She says “he’s not right Daniel, he keeps talking like he’s gonna leave town or something” which struck me as odd for a few reasons which are all very speculative but whatever I’m sharing them anyways.
So first things first Shannon has been completely clueless and apathetic toward Robby throughout the entire show from blowing him off and leaving him home alone to completely abandoning him for weeks on end without power and getting mad at him for defending himself from one of her partners so it can’t exactly be said that she notices when things are bad with him.
Now it could be argued that going through rehab changed that behavior but she still chooses not to go after her sixteen year old son who is a homeless fugitive because her life coach said she shouldn’t look for him, if she’d wanted to actually do something for him that was her chance so she clearly hasn’t changed that much.
So it was weird to me that she suddenly seemed so much more worried after talking to him even though she had more information about where he was, think how wrong something had to be for her to notice and be that worked up about it. She literally begs Daniel to help Robby.
Then there’s the fact that she says “he’s not right” which is quite intense and comes across very dark in my mind like she’s not just saying he’s upset she’s saying there’s something seriously wrong and again she’s proven herself to be incredibly clueless so coming from her this statement is even more concerning.
Then she says “he keeps talking like he’s gonna leave town or something.” So the fact that she says like makes it feel like Robby didn’t just flat out say he was going to leave town he said something that made Shannon feel like he was talking about leaving town. This point is further highlighted by her saying “or something” at the end.
Between both of these uncertain statements it becomes clear that he didn’t say he was leaving town but said something about leaving and the rest of the conclusion Shannon drew herself. Technically he could’ve been just talking about leaving town but given the fact that it’s been weeks and he had a car previously it seemed like if that was his plan he’d have done it already.
So what we really have is a sixteen year old who was abused and neglected his whole life, who had been told every horrible thing you could be told by the people he trusted the most, has terribly low self esteem, has been abandoned by the only mentor he thought he had twice despite that person knowing he would be homeless, had been cheated on by his girlfriend and only friend, nearly killed someone, and has been living on the streets for weeks saying something along the lines of “I need to get out of here” and “I can’t do this anymore.”
Something that could be interpreted as wanting to leave town or wanting to leave something but he never specified what and his mom who is clueless about him in general is freaking out saying that he isn’t right. On top of this he has no one on his side in the world and has been through unbearable trauma.
You see after this how quickly he gives up fighting the cops is so out of character for him and thinking that he’s in this place of being so ready to just end everything makes so much sense for why he was willing to go with Kreese and join Cobra Kai. He’d already given up and the thought that he was in such a horrible place helps explain so many of his actions in seasons three and four.
So yeah that’s my thoughts on this, I’m super curious about whether this makes anyone else rethink this scene or the rest of Robby’s arc.

RWBY Volume 9 Ep 3 - Rude, Red, and Royal
This episode frustrated me a bit at first but got very interesting in the end. And then I rewatched it and this whole post just kind of happened.
- “Uh... are we sure we should do this?” Yeah, the longer all of their interactions with the Red Prince kept going on, the more I was wondering why they were even doing this in the first place. “Because the Red King helped Alyx in the book” - okay, but clearly the Red Prince is completely different and not willing to help whatsoever. So why engage with him in the first place? It didn’t seem like he was ever going to help them so like... should have just let Yang rough up those guards in Ep2 (since he beheaded them anyways) - but then again, maybe not following the path of the story wouldn’t have worked?
- I also think it’s interesting how because “The Girl who fell through the World” and “Alice in Wonderland” are not exactly the same story, there are moments where we as viewers know more than the characters do. For instance, they think the Red King will help them, but all of us know that the Queen of Hearts is bad news.
- I love Weiss and Yang not even pretending to be nice with their birthday wishes.
- So instead of the Queen of Hearts hating white roses, we have the Red Prince hating green things - nice reference, including the “Off with their heads!” thing. And gosh, Ruby’s heartbroken expression when she says “How could you?” after he throws Penny’s sword away - she needs to come back and get it PLEASE. (And based on the trailer I’m guessing she will.)
- See, and Ruby now offering to cheer the Prince up with a game is what I don’t get. Like, at this point, they should have just left. Clearly this isn’t the King they know from the story and this isn’t working. Oh well.
- Little suggesting “small” as a compliment and then being pleased when it works - I love them.
- “Now we’re all Littles!” Gosh, I love Little so much.
- On a more serious note, Ruby being so scared for her friends during the game really struck a chord with me. She just lost Penny, the girl she loves one of her closest friends, and during this whole scene you can just see the fear in her eyes at the thought of losing someone else. When she says “No one’s going to get hurt, right?”... babygirl :((. (I hate the Red Prince so much ugh.)
- Wait, how did I only notice on my rewatch that the white pieces are losing on purpose at first because the Red Prince tells them to? That was super obvious and I didn’t catch it the first time.
- Aww, Blake blushing when Yang cheers her on is cute.
- When the Red Prince kept asking questions during the game I kept thinking... I don’t think you should be telling him any of this.
- “Little is a mouse... at least I think.” Little is Penny theory confirmed
- The entire fight sequence on the board is abolutely amazing. The music, the choreography, that one epic shot of Weiss... yeah, that’s a really amazing sequence. I get why CRWBY were hyping this episode up for the music.
- But gosh again, pay attention to Ruby during the fight and how worried she is the whole time. This is really freaking her out.
Tumblr media
- What freaks me out here is that Blake would have fallen if Little hadn’t grabbed her. Like yikes, that was way too close!
- “unable to do the one thing you were put on this acre to do” Hmm.. so winning board games is the prince’s purpose? I still want to know more about how this whole world works. And who is the curious cat? How do they know so much? Why did they decide to save Team RWBY? I want to understand what’s going on! (I know we’ll find this all out, but I’m impatient.)
- “Change” definitely is an important theme this season. We’ll see where that eventually leads.
- So wait, did the cat... teleport them?
- “Great, so we’re not in the stupid story after all - we’re in its stupid sequel!” Oh, Weiss has the best lines this volume! (Made better by the knowledge that sequels are usually worse.)
- “You’re not nearly as interesting as the others I’ve met.” Okay, plural there - so Alyx isn’t the only human the curious cat has met. Either they already met Jaune and/or Neo, or there have been other humans besides Alyx here before - probably the latter.
- “Can’t anyone here be normal?” I’m kinda feeling you on that rn, Weiss. But then again, this is Alice in Wonderland - "we’re all mad here” and all that.
- Has Yang ever used “Rubes” as a nickname for Ruby before? I like it!
Tumblr media
Something, something, brothers of light and darkness...
Tumblr media
Green lightning and green rain - so here’s how green symbolizes Penny and therefore her spirit is still in this world... okay that one’s maybe a bit too far-fetched
Tumblr media
What is the Jabberwalker holding here? They ask “Fix?” and then throw it away. Looks like a piece of metal? Did anyone get a closer look? Whatever it is, this seems important.
(Okay, far-fetched theory time because I want her back: This is Penny’s core (we don’t know if her new body was fully human - Ambrosius never specified that it was and Team RWBY never specifically asked for it to be) and if Team RWBY take it back to Remnant, Pietro can build Penny a new body and they can revive her again.)
Tumblr media
So, Neo falling is represented by a pink comet crashing down. This makes the intro more interesting:
Tumblr media
We see a red comet here in the beginning - Ruby, I’m guessing.
Tumblr media
And then we see two blue ones here. Now this is interesting. This could be Weiss, but who else? Jaune fell after Ruby, but wouldn’t his be yellow? And why only show Weiss and not the others? I think it’s more likely that this is either Alyx and someone else (the other human the curious cat has met?), or that it’s Alyx twice if she’s reliving her story in a time-loop like some people have theorized. But I think it’s the former, as we also see someone else behind Alyx here:
Tumblr media
So yeah, I think there was definitely someone else with Alyx.
- Also, since Neo and Ruby/Blake fell at the same time, but Neo is only landing now, that makes me wonder how time works here and if Jaune has even landed yet.
- So wait, did Neo’s semblance just evolve? She seems surprised at the copies of herself suddenly appearing, so this seems new. Really cool, but at the same time Neo was already one of the most op characters in the show; so this is kinda terrifying.
- Aww, poor Jabberwalker, I feel bad for them. Let Team RWBY befriend the scary monster, actually.
Yeah, interesting episode - but I need to know how it goes on now please.

CAROLINE i’m BACK i finished the entire series and holy fuck i haven’t read it since i was a kid, just watched the movies as they came out, and wow wow wow i blame the movies for undermining so much of the excellency.
i cried throughout prim’s reaping, katniss returning home to district 12 in mockingjay through the epilogue. peeta and katniss’ relationship makes SO much sense and is so beautifully developed. the “triangle” between gale and peeta actually feels much deeper and more metaphorical than just “omg who does katniss love!” and speaks a lot to katniss’ characterization and headspace at certain points in the series. the suffering and brutality is not glossed over at all, and the depth to each and every character no matter how small is incredible.
what a beautiful love story, an uplifting story of hope and freedom, a devastating social commentary on our current state of the world—as well as a cautionary tale for how we might try to fix it—and wonderful characters to deliver it all.
the hunger games truly should have been an age-accurate mini series like what percy jackson is getting. too many scenes were omitted that in the books felt incredibly purposeful. the actors were too old to hit home exactly WHY it was so meaningful for katniss, a CHILD to be such a threat, not 26yo jennifer lawrence. the writing was awkward and choppy and left the delivery unsatisfactory. the pacing is weird. and the emphasis on the spectacle of the capitol and the love triangle between k/g/p is exactly the freaking point suzanne collins was trying to make. they just miss the mark so bad. i honestly didn’t even finish my movies rewatch
like, imagine the hunger games. with a the last of us budget and production quality, 9 ep seasons, ~1.1.5 hour long episodes, 1 season for each book
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! i honestly dont have anything insightful to add i'm just like clapping and nodding and snapping my fingers like YES!!! EXACtlY!!!!!!!!!
and UGH The movies drive me so crazy like they really just gut alll the feeling and the commentary AND THE ROMANCE AND THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and literally everything that was good from the books. last night i had the mockingjay epilogue/ending scene recommended to me by youtube so i was like hm ok fine might as well watch it then and i was like wow. how do they make it so that my FAVORITE CHARACTERS EVER have absolutely 0 chemistry and i can watch this scene and feel absolutely nothing. meanwhile i can pick up the book and flip it to a random page and i'll be throwing it against the wall because it makes me so insane. UGH!
but at least we'll always have the books and we can always have the most beautiful love story and salient social commentary and engaging read all wrapped up into one forever. like we'll always have that. it's insane that the books even exist they're SO GOOD

penny for your thoughts on stranger things season 4 (specifically volume 2)?
alright i wrote out an entire essay last night and tumblr deleted it, so i’m going to try this again and hope it actually works 😭
spoilers and rambling under the cut!
so for the most part i really enjoyed volume two. i loved the cinematography, particularly the part when nancy was shooting vecna and hop was fighting the demogorgon while the remix of running up that hill played. i also loved how it showed the three groups managing to come together, even as spread out as they all were. like! theres my bad ass crew of characters that i love so much, finding ways to win even from three different places!!! and of course we FINALLY got the jopper kiss…. i have been thinking about ‘use your imagination’ ‘who needs imagination?’ for two days straight. no one is doing it like them. just so many little interactions and moments that i loved— el and hopper reunion, lucas and max talking on their pads, lucas holding maxs body 😭, dustin and eddie’s relationship, eddie’s guitar solo, all the robin and steve bestie moments, the way the threads of the story all came together, the little jokes and beats of humor, el piggybacking and saving max… there was a lot i liked.
however. the things that i didn’t like were kind of big sticking points to me, and made it so that i didn’t enjoy it as much as i’d hoped to.
first of all, the episodes were simply too long. like for a complicated storyline, with so many moving parts, the episodes were just…. really dense. during episode nine i kept going ‘is it done yet? is it done yet? is it done yet?’ because i got overstimulated and tired. and i suppose i could have just paused it, but i find stopping in the middle of an episode very difficult. id have rather them be shorter episodes that i could pause at the end of and come back to when i was ready. and that’s kind of sad because like. i KNOW i missed things, but it’s such a big task to go back and rewatch it all that idk if i will anytime soon.
second of all…. eddie. stranger things has such a problem with introducing side characters just to kill then off, and eddie is just another in a long line (robin, murray, and erica being the main exceptions). which is interesting to me, because everyone was talking about how there was going to be this huge emotional character death this season, and like… i sobbed like a baby when he died, because i loved him, but it was almost expected. it would have been much more shocking and devastating if it was nancy or steve (who i thought was going to die). the fact that they did kill of eddie was also just so painful because 1) he was so loveable and i would have loved to see him grow and become part of the group, looking after the kids with nancy and steve and robin and jonathan, and also getting to have that sense of family when he’d only ever had his dad before. 2) the dialogue with dustin…. god that was heart wrenching. that was the one part of his death that i liked. i was sobbing i was shaking i was a fucking mess over it. 3) i can’t help but see eddie as a gay man— his entire story with being a freak, an outsider, unwelcome, and unknown by anyone but hated by everyone was very reminiscent of the gay experience to me. and so the fact that he died…. it was like okay yeah of course the queer coded side character died. of course he did.
and finally… will. i don’t even know where to start. they did him so dirty. this main character, around whom the entire over arching plot of the show has revolved, was treated like a side character. will, who has a connection to the upside down unlike anyone else, barely had any screen time that wasn’t him just setting up mike and el. literally without him there wouldn’t BE stranger things, and yet they just. tossed him aside. the only times he was around was when his own pain and suffering and feelings were used to deepen mike and el’s relationship— which had already had three prior seasons to develop!!! it just felt awful to have this character— who is clearly gay, clearly in love with his best friend, clearly already feeling like an outsider— tossed aside and disregarded. like not a single person except jonathan seemed to notice or care about him the entire season, and it’s like…. it’s just frustrating. like i wish they weren’t using his pain and love and feelings to elevate the heterosexual ship. idk.
so overall, it was good, but those are really big things that i didn’t like and so i don’t feel like i enjoyed it as much as i wanted to.

A brief review of every Beyblade Metal Masters episode
Gonna try and keep these briefer than the Fusion ones were though I can’t make any promises once we get into the meatier episodes.
Episode 1: Seeking the Legend 8/10
Tumblr media
Gingka seeking out the new Pegasus is a fun little adventure and the scene where he actually contacts and claims Pegasus is honestly epic. It’s a really good way to start a season. Masamune’s stuff… well I don’t like Masamune but I admit his introduction is well done.
Episode 2: The Persistent Challenger 7/10
Tumblr media
Masamune is a stalker in this episode. There are too many stalkers in this show. Also Gingka gains complete control over Galaxy Pegasus way too quickly. It takes one scene and suddenly all of Gingka’s struggles become working with a group rather than with a new bey. Him not being used to his new Pegasus is only brought up one other time after this. Kenta is great here at least.
Episode 3: A New Challenge 6/10
Tumblr media
Masamune and Gingka honestly exhaust me. There’s a couple funny moments but we’re three episodes in and I’m already tired of their bickering. Mei Mei and Chi-Yun are good new characters though, even if I don’t like Chi-Yun.
Episode 4: Ticket to the World 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Kenta not making it to the world tournament was bad writing. Besides that, this episode is actually very entertaining. Lotta fun little battles and funny moments.
Episode 5: Fierce Battle! Leone VS Eagle 9/10
Tumblr media
Kyoya learned from his battle with Ryuga. He creates rubble to use in his tornado and make it stronger and use against the opponent. Also this battle is freaking epic. It starts the best plot in Masters and is just Kyoya and Tsubasa being total badasses.
Episode 6: Soar Into the World 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Tsubasa vs Yu is a good battle and then Gingka has a mini depression episode which is… fine. Cute episode.
Episode 7: The Beylin Temple in the Sky 7.5/10
Tumblr media
I don’t know why Daxiang was so entertaining on this rewatch but he was. He is genuinely introduced well but he also just makes me laugh. Also Masamune has a rare smart moment in this episode.
Episode 8: The Third Man 6.5/10
Tumblr media
I don’t like Chao Xin or Masamune. So no thanks to this one. It’s not a bad episode, it sets up the first battle well, I’m just not into it.
Episode 9: The World Championships Begin! 7/10
Tumblr media
Okay this was actually pretty cool. I feel like the sequence of Masamune’s arc feels out of order for some weird reason but the battle of this episode is still good.
Episode 10: Lacerta’s Will 7.5/10
Tumblr media
I want to punt Chi Yun across the stadium. What is his problem?! I know Tsubasa had to be driven to the point where he goes dark mode but come on. That being said, the scene where he does snap gave me chills so this episode has that going for it.
Episode 11: The 4000 Year Old Secret 7/10
Tumblr media
This battle’s fine. A little lukewarm honestly, especially after the last one but not boring.
Episode 12: The Bey with a Hero’s Name 5/10
Tumblr media
Why establish an entire team just to have them defeated in one episode and completely forgotten? That’s… that’s boring. These guys are boring. Also while I do like Julian, god do I hate the whole, “yeah I can rotate both ways because I’m rich” nonsense. In one fell swoop, it makes reverse rotation, something that was previously a huge deal and was the mark of evil, into just some silly quirk. It’s one of the worst things the series has done overall.
Episode 13: The Wintry Land of Russia 6.5/10
Tumblr media
This whole episode is the characters chilling on a train and… it’s honestly fine. Madoka falling for the first intelligent person she’s ever seen in her life is pretty amusing and Lera… would’ve been a great character if she’d actually been used properly.
Episode 14: How Grand! The Cage Match 6.5/10
Tumblr media
Gingka has no arc this season but he has a bunch of tiny character moments scattered throughout the season, with this being one of them. It’s an okay battle, with an obvious conclusion (both Gingka winning and the way he wins).
Episode 15: Libra Departs for the Front 7/10
Tumblr media
Okay seeing Yu battle is really nice and the way he wins is fun. I don’t really have any complaints about this one, I just like other episodes more.
Episode 16: The Festival of Warriors 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Gingka, Masamune, and Yu are so disrespectful in this episode, I don’t think they get into enough trouble for the stunt they pulled here. Sophie and Wales are awesome though.
Episode 17: We Meet Again! Wang Fu Zhong 5/10
Tumblr media
This episode doesn’t do anything objectively wrong, unless you count wasting time on the teamwork theme that honestly goes nowhere this season and just annoying the crap out of me. I’m sure the bickering is supposed to be funny, and there’s some moments here and there but overall, this episode honestly feels like a waste of time.
Episode 18: The Scorching Hot Lion 9/10
Tumblr media
This episode is such a breath of fresh air after the stretch of honestly overall boring episodes so far. This is a simple but fun story that introduces both Nile and Demure well and further cements Kyoya as the best person in the room at any given point… before Ryuga took his spot.
Episode 19: The Shocking Wild Fang 8/10
Tumblr media
Kyoya you probably shouldn’t have revealed Reverse Wind Strike like that but I’ll forgive you because I love you. Also, Team Wild Fang slaying some fools is great.
Episode 20: Horuseus vs Striker 8/10
Tumblr media
Masamune is so goddamn irritating on this episode. Nile kicking his ass is so unbelievably satisfying. The battle’s also just fun in general.
Episode 21: Eternal Rivals 10/10
Tumblr media
This is Kyoya and Gingka’s best one on one battle and one of the best battles in the series if I’m being honest. There are so many back and forths and the conclusion that Kyoya and Gingka are on the same level powerwise is actually really cool. It’s a lot more interesting than Gingka winning, which was the only other option storywise at this point.
Episode 22: The Third Match: On the Edge 9/10
Tumblr media
This episode is brutal. They really knock Tsubasa around and build up to his breakdown, which is a doozy. Every painful thing that could happen with this plot happens here: Tsubasa knocks away Yu, destroys the stadium, attacks his eagle, makes Hikaru panic so badly that Ryo takes a break from being a terrible person to shield her from the falling glass. That moment was the first one that made me cry when I first got back into Beyblade.
Episode 23: The End of a Fierce Struggle! 7.5/10
Tumblr media
(Warning: I talk about abuse again in this section, specifically a parent abusing their child. Just know this anger is coming from a personal place but if it’s a triggering topic, I suggest you scroll past the majority of this part. I talk about the rest of the episode in the last paragraph.)
NOT FORCING INJURED CHILDREN INTO WHAT HAS BECOME A WAR ZONE IS NOT “SPECIAL TREATMENT”! IT SHOULD BE STANDARD PRACTICE THAT ANY TEAMMATE ON ANY TEAM SHOULDN’T HAVE TO BATTLE IF THEY’RE INJURED.
I really REALLY hate Ryo. I don’t care that Gingka and Kyoya wanted to battle, they shouldn’t have even been allowed to in the state that they were in. They couldn’t even launch their beys properly and were in physical pain the entire time. I’m sorry to bring this up AGAIN but this is yet another way Ryo abuses Gingka. He put him and his bey in physical danger and whether you consider this active harm or neglect, it’s still abusive. I don’t get how Gingka doesn’t linger on shit like this. Here’s how I’d fix it: Have Ryo refuse to force his injured son to fight and THEN someone (perhaps someone else in the WBBA, it can’t just be Ryo and a couple of teenagers) argues he’s showing favouritism and Ryo ends up feeling like his hands are tied and he has to make Gingka battle. That wouldn’t have completely excused it but it may not have made me completely hate him for two seasons in a row.
-
Okay, I got really angry for an episode I honestly like. Besides the WBBA’s disgusting decision, this is a pretty fun battle. Masamune shows he learned his lesson from Nile and actually works with Gingka as a team to defeat him and Kyoya, which is nice to see. Masamune has some good moments here and there in this show and this is one of them. Also Kyoya really shows how much he’s grown this season, letting himself rely on a teammate and not blaming him when they lose. He actually accepts the loss very graciously, even encouraging Gingka to keep winning. It’s really sweet.
Episode 24: The Creeping Darkness 7/10
Tumblr media
Yay the dark Tsubasa thing has been explained! That’s really interesting. Mei Mei and Chao Xin’s battle against Sophie and Wales is okay, nothing special though.
Episode 25: The Axe of Destruction 6/10
Tumblr media
I don’t like Chi Yun, so this episode doesn’t do it for me. They spend way too long on his backstory for my liking. I think it would’ve been better if Chi Yun’s backstory with Da Xiang was explained in an earlier episode or something. Overall, this episode feels like filler despite being Klaus’s introduction.
Episode 26: The Dragon Emperor Returns 9.5/10
Tumblr media
RYUGA! Gosh he never fails to make me smile. I was feeling kinda down when I rewatched this one and the moment Ryuga appeared in his flash of lightning, I was smiling ear to ear and melting at his story of overcoming the dark power. This character means so much to me, I’m a little in awe. And you know what else means a lot to me? The Dark Tsubasa arc. Getting a visual on what is going on in Tsubasa’s mind is really powerful and the animation and acting are honestly stellar. It’s also nice to see Excalibur. Just overall a great episode.
Episode 27: Exceed the Limit! 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Okay, I like this battle. Masamune and Klaus are so respectful to each other it makes me respect them and the battle is so back and forth it’s kind of exhilarating. Also, Ryuga gets some cameos. Yay :)
Episode 28: Dark Eagle 9.5/10
Tumblr media
“Everyone has darkness in their hearts, instead of trying to suppress it, we should accept it as part of ourselves and learn to control it.” That message alone boosts this episode so high in my mind, I freaking love it. I also just think the Dark Tsubasa arc was overall exciting and interesting and this was a great battle and conclusion.
Episode 29: Gravity Destroyer 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Gingka kicks Julian’s butt because a hot homeless person with a crush on him gave him some tsundere pointers and honestly, that’s beautiful.
Episode 30: The Midday Street Battle 7.5/10
Tumblr media
“Don’t wander through the slums of Brazil alone, kids. You’ll get beat up and left for dead on the streets.” This show is so brutal I swear to god.
Episode 31: The Brazilian Trap 7/10
Tumblr media
“If you lose at Beyblade you can still live a normal life.” He says to a kid who once had the threat of death over his head if he lost to a sadistic snake boi.
“You who has never had to worry about not having a place to live.” He says to a kid who was at the very least implied to be homeless before the Dark Nebula took him in and again, kidnapped and tried to kill him
Why do the characters never once bring up these points? The Garcias are clearly intended to be hypocrites, why not call them out on it directly? Also, Masamune is really stupid but I find myself laughing at this incompetence.
Episode 32: The Explosive Cyclone Battle 7/10
Tumblr media
Selen out here playing Punch Out while the rest of us are trying to do actual boxing. Is that reference lost on my Beyblade crowd? Ya dodge a lot in Punch Out. The Cyclone Battle stuff is fine I guess and Gingka losing to Argo, getting a major loss in the World Tournament is pretty cool.
Episode 33: Charge! Ray Gil! 8/10
Tumblr media
“You think we’ve had an easy time?! My path so far definitely hasn’t been an easy one either!” You fucking tell them Tsubasa. The Garcias definitely could’ve and should’ve been called out more but this was a great battle despite that. I love that Tsubasa’s dark side comes back for just a moment but he’s able to overcome it with the support of his friends and faith in his abilities that have gotten him this far. Also that scene with Ryuga at the end is downright legendary.
Episode 34: The Friend’s Name is Zeo 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Pretty chill episode, besides the backstory bit that made my heart ache. Also Coach Steel is great.
Episode 35: Our Slogan is Number 1! 8/10
Tumblr media
An entire flashback episode devoted to Team Dungeon? You’re really setting me up to get my heart broken aren’t you?
Episode 36: The Plot Thickens 8/10
Tumblr media
This is mostly exposition for the arrangement system and team Starbreaker but it’s interesting exposition and definitely important going forward. It also has the introduction of my beloved Jack and shows my beloved Ryuga kicking ass.
Episode 37: The Compass of Fate: Byxis 8.5/10
Tumblr media
More Ryuga, and the introduction of Damian. And Zeo being an angsty sad boy. And Tsubasa and Yu getting attacked. A lot happens in this episode for a seemingly uneventful one.
Episode 38: The Wicked Peacock: Befall 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Peacocks can’t fly you beautiful disaster. What the hell has Ziggurat been teaching you, Jack? This is a really good debut for Jack, I can’t help it. He’s so much fun.
Episode 39: The Guard Dog of Hades: Kerbecs 8.5/10
Tumblr media
This episode is painful. I like Julian, even if he’s a bit annoying, so seeing him being humiliated and tortured like that was brutal.
Episode 40: The Furious DJ Battle?! 9.5/10
Tumblr media
Kenta feeling overshadowed and ignored by the others is straight up set up in Masters. Not in this episode specifically, but it is a good example.
Putting that aside, this episode is really funny. It feels more and more like a parody as it goes on, even before the Blader DJs show up, but especially when they do. It’s like a crazy fanfiction or something. I love it.
Episode 41: The Final Countdown 9/10
Tumblr media
This episode is literally just a shot of pure pain and depression. Why must these children be traumatised all the time? :(
Episode 42: The Dragon Emperor Descends 10/10
Tumblr media
Yeah, I have no idea how I left this episode off my Top 5 Masters Episodes list. I adore this episode. It’s a great show of both Ryuga and Jack’s power and personalities, showing how unhinged yet passionate Jack is, and showing Ryuga being a total badass who can actually be quite clever and a bit sadistic even without the dark power. It’s obvious he was toying with Jack from the start, to me at least, but going as far as humiliating him like that was pretty brutal. I just love both of these characters so seeing them clash is just perfect, and a neat little surprise for first time watchers.
Episode 43: Spirits’ Last Battle 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Lots of exposition in the first half, but it’s important and some of the revelations and characters’ reactions to it are pretty impactful. Gingka vs Damian is a pretty predictable setup but it’s a reasonably fun time.
Episode 44: Showdown! Gingka vs Damian 7.5/10
Tumblr media
I actually didn’t remember Storm Bringer coming back at all, that’s really cool.
“You really are just a victim in all this.” Okay, Gingka acknowledging that about Damian is a really powerful moment and I do feel bad for Damian despite it all.
Would’ve been nice to get a moment like this with Reiji and Jack but I digress I guess :/
Episode 45: The Miraculous Spiral Force 8/10
Tumblr media
Ziggurat discusses global warming, overpopulation, and the energy crisis, all of which are still issues to this day and weren’t even as well known a decade ago when this came out. That is the catalyst of Ziggurat’s plan. This show has some serious balls and it does not get nearly enough credit for it.
Episode 46: Charge! Hades City 8/10
Tumblr media
Fun episode with a lot of little moments for even the less major characters to shine.
Episode 47: The Fallen Emperor 9/10
Tumblr media
I talked about this fairly recently in my “great things about Masters” post but I love the way Julian and Da Xiang’s character arcs meet and contrast in this episode, Julian drowning in shame from his failure, feeling like he has nothing left to lose with his pride and family legacy seemingly destroyed while Da Xiang took his failure as an opportunity to improve and teaches Julian to do the same with their battle and his words. Beyblade’s consistent theme of getting back up after a loss and to keep moving forward is a really important one and it’s very prevalent here.
Episode 48: Befall’s Trap 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Jack finally got off the drugs, that’s nice. He and Tsubasa’s battle was fun, two really great characters clashing is always nice to see. Also, Jack is very funny and cute.
Episode 49: The Wild Beast Unleashed 9/10
Tumblr media
Kyoya is really really really hot and badass. No thoughts, only simping.
Okay if I have to provide a thought, I like the whole “you need actual experience to be good at something” message that Kyoya is preaching. Kyoya is cool.
Episode 50: Rampage! Tempo 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Okay, some of this science is so wrong it has to be intentionally them going with magic over science, which they absolutely should not do when the plot is rooted in science.
Ryuga’s cameo was super hot though.
Episode 51: Galaxy Heart 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Kind of a weird finale. There is a battle going on but the thing that saves the day is Gingka and Ryuga launching their beys at a machine and sending an explosion to space, which is fun in its own right. Also the team dungeon stuff is excellent as usual.

final thoughts speed round GO:
-camila is so fucking adorable and it was a blast to get to know her better this season
-after rewatching s1 to prep for s2 all i can say is thank you to whoever raised wn's wig budget. adriel looked absolutely bonkers in s1.
-i spent the entire season thinking that mary was still alive and there'd be a plot twist. i still think she's alive. i will die on this hill.
-the pope electrocution scene truly shook me to my core like damn they really zapped this man on live tv
-honestly in denial about the lilith situation idk i know she was freaked out beyond belief but i just couldn't get behind her making out with adriel. my AU says maybe she goes to him for help, he does the old creepy eye trick, she sees him for who he truly is and heads right back to her friends. that feels right.
-i will reiterate once more that i don't believe mary is dead because that too feels right :) seriously i felt like they were majorly setting up for a plot twist she's alive moment but ran out of time so they were gonna do it in s3!
-spent the entire season hating on miguel/michael for getting in the way. like genuinely disliking this man. he grew on me a little to the point where when he got his heart ripped out i was like aw :(
-i think i was prepping myself for an absolute disaster of an ending, like either an ava/beatrice dying situation, so the reality feels less hurtful, although i wish upon wish that we could've gotten more scenes of bea and ava just being a happy couple, enjoying each other's company, beating up bad guys, etc. i believe that's where the show was headed, like i think the writers were planning on giving them that, so to me that's what happened!
-ngl some choice bops for the soundtrack. good for them.
-just. i think they're all gonna end up ok. even if we don't get to see it.

hi! zero obligation to answer this ask but I’m an old school SPN fan (went to a convention in 2013 and everything lol) who stopped watching in season 9 & hasn’t seen a full episode past that point. I’m wondering if you could recommend any episodes from season 9-15 that you think are essential viewing for the Sam x Dean relationship? I know episodes like Red Meat and Baby are popular but any others you can think of would be amazing!
hi anon! sorry this took a while, i was compiling the list, and then halfway through my app crapped out and i had to do it all over again. thanks, tumblr :')
anyway, here is the comprehensive list of my personal fav samdean episodes! i'll be putting most of it under a cut, since it's kinda long, and i'll add a samdean factor (sdf) rating out of ten at the end of each episode summary.
here goes!
season 9
actually my least favorite season, but it does have a couple good episodes
9.05 dog dean afternoon – dean becomes a dog. sort of. yeah. humorous motw (monster of the week) episode with some hurt!sam and some good face-caressing action from dean. sdf 7/10.
9.07 bad boys – motw, has flashbacks to teenage dean. some retconning about john that might bother you if you're a john fan. overall a good episode, with a moment at the end showing just how much sam means to dean. sdf 6.5/10.
9.13 the purge – boys go undercover at a spa. also the episode that introduces donna. motw, lots of humorous moments, including the classic sam and dean being confused for a couple thing. also, sam doing yoga. the boys do have an argument at the end though, for plot-related reasons. sdf 7.5/10.
9.23 do you believe in miracles – overall kind of a boring episode, but has a samdean moment at the end when dean decides to take a temporary vacation from the mortal plane. you could just watch that on youtube though, with the keywords "i'm proud of us." i wouldn't say it's worth putting yourself through the entire episode. up to you entirely. sdf 5/10.
season 10
10.03 soul survivor – actually one of my favorite episodes. not top 5 or anything but it's up there. demon dean chases sam around the bunker a lot, he was nice and scary, and the suspense was fun. references to married samdean at the end. sdf 7.5/10.
10.05 fan fiction – basically a love letter to the fans. motw at a high school play based on the supernatural books. lots of brother moments, by proxy and in actuality. the show pokes fun at itself in a light-hearted way. the samulet is brought up. good stuff. sdf 8.5/10.
10.06 ask jeeves – one of my absolute favorite episodes to rewatch. motw, classic locked-room mystery except in a house. sam and dean stuck with rich pretentious WASPs. sam versus cougars. the phrase "homosexual murderers." overall a very good episode. sdf 8.5/10.
10.12 about a boy – motw, deaged!dean shenanigans. sam gets to be the big brother for once. lots of banter. a cute scene with dean telling stories of his and sam's childhood. a fun episode to watch. sdf 7.5/10.
10.14 the executioner's song – oh man, what an episode. plot-related. dean versus cain, excellent fight scene, even better emotional samdean moment later. it's a short moment so you could just youtube it if you wanted, but overall i would recommend this episode. sdf 8/10.
10.19 the werther project – motw with some plot-related stuff. warning for suicide. really good episode, though intense. good samdean moments at the end, including hurt!sam and dean stroking his hair. sdf 9/10.
10.23 brother's keeper – season finale. suspenseful episode, i liked it. watch for the sam versus dean fight, and death's scenes. the brother moment pay-off is SO GOOD. in my opinion this is where spn started getting good again. sdf 9.5/10.
season 11
aka my favorite season
11.04 baby – easily my top 10, if not my top 5. motw told from the impala's perspective. so many brother moments, and improvements on their relationship like open communication etc. really brilliant. don't miss this one. sdf 10/10.
11.05 thin lizzie – fun episode until the axe murders start. sam and his thing for serial killers, dean indulging him. the implication of bed-sharing. banter and fun. good stuff. sdf 8.5/10.
11.08 just my imagination – motw episode, super cute moments. sam getting affirmation that he's a hero. flashbacks to younger sam and dean. dean being jealous of someone else being protective of sam. lots of humorous moments. sdf 9/10.
11.10 the devil in the details – plot episode. watch mainly for sam standing up to lucifer, and dean protecting him. excellent excellent moments. warning: you might feel rage by the end of it due to a certain angel's bad decisions. sdf 9.5/10.
11.11 into the mystic – motw at a senior home. eileen is introduced. sam accidentally says fuck in asl. good episode. broment with sam thinking about his and dean's future. sdf 8/10.
11.16 safe house – amazing episode. motw. the boys work a case worked by bobby and rufus in the past. excellent transitions between present and past, bobby and rufus banter, and dean reaffirming that sam is a part of his soul. sdf 9/10.
11.17 red meat – do i need to say any more. possibly my favorite episode of ALL TIME. motw. hurt!sam, reckless!suicidal!dean. straight up romeo and juliet parallels. badass sam. the boys being compared to a married couple. the classic spn vibe is [chef's kiss] sdf 15/10.
11.19 the chitters – motw episode featuring two of my favorite one-off characters. more classic spn vibes, specifically wendigo (monsters in the woods). more of dean comparing him and sam to a married couple. the usual. sdf 8.5/10.
11.20 don't call me shurley – the show could have ended at this episode and it would have been perfect. more classic spn vibes, with a case in a small town. more sam and dean moments than you know what to do with. soft touches and reaffirming their love and obsession with each other. a long-standing theory confirmed. and of course, one of the most important objects in their personal history. sdf 13/10.
season 12
also one of my favorite seasons
12.01 keep calm and carry on – no bro interaction in this one, but you might enjoy it if you like hurt!sam and feral!protective!dean. also, dean talking mary's ear off about sam. sdf 7/10.
12.04 american nightmare – motw with one of my favorite one-off characters again. sam's past is revisited. brothers have some nice moments of banter, but it's mostly sam-centric. sdf 6.5/10.
12.06 celebrating the life of asa fox – motw in which dean literally forgets his mother's existence because a door comes in between him and sam. great episode. another locked-room mystery in a house; the brothers attend the wake of a famous hunter and run into other hunters who see them as legends (also what inspired my url lol). trouble happens. sdf 8.5/10.
12.09 first blood – separation anxiety leads them to make a stupid deal in order to break out of a maximum security facility and see each other again. separation described as "worse than hell." unironically. badass winchesters. underrated episode, one of my favorites. i rewatch it a lot actually. sdf 9/10.
12.11 regarding dean – motw. a curse causes dean to start losing his memory. he begins forgetting everything, including sam. angst and brother moments ensue. rowena is there. good stuff. sdf 8.5/10.
12.20 twigs and twines and tasha banes – the witch twins return! good motw episode with interesting characters, paralleled with the boys. wish we'd gotten a banes twin spin-off or at least more episodes with them. sdf 7.5/10.
12.22 who we are – sam and dean getting themselves out of a death trap. dean finally gets to use his rocket launcher. the words "hey lunatic" are said in the way most people say "i love you." bro hug. dean is proud of his badass little brother. ass is kicked. the brothers do separate midway through the episode but the broments more than make up for it. dean stands up to mary for everything she did to her boys with her choices – especially sam. extremely emotional episode, sdf 10/10 would recommend.
season 13
13.11 breakdown – motw. dean takes a visibly depressed sam on a hunt to help donna out. some epic hurt!sam ensues. brother moment at the end where they talk about sam's depression. sdf 7.5/10.
13.12 various and sundry villains – humorous motw episode. dean gets put under a spell by a witch and is convinced she's his soulmate. sam, his actual soulmate, is not amused. wrestling and shenanigans ensue. rowena is there, as she usually is when witchy shenanigans are going down. she and sam talk about their lucifer-related trauma. good episode overall. sdf 8.5/10.
13.15 a most holy man – motw (sort of) where the boys hunt down a skull, knock the fuck out of a priest, and engage in general shenanigans. humorous broments scattered throughout the episode. jealous!dean makes an appearance. sdf 8.5/10.
13.17 the thing – motw. sam gets kidnapped, dean loses his shit. lovers are separated across an interdimensional rift, while dean debates whether it's safe to take sam across another interdimensional rift. parallels between the brothers and a pair of lovers? yep. must be another day ending in y. sdf 9/10.
13.19 funeralia – wonderful, wonderful episode. rowena and billie are BRILLIANT. dean freaks out again because he's separated from sam. important revelation about sam and rowena at the end. sdf 8.5/10.
13.21 beat the devil – sam and dean go to the alternative universe to save mary and jack. BAD SHIT happens to sam and dean can't help him at all, leading him to go literally mute with grief. so. many. emotions. no one matters to these boys as much as each other and this episode is testament to that. sdf 10/10.
13.22 exodus – HUG. BROTHER MOMENT. BADASS BOYS. SAM BEING A LEADER. GOOD STUFF ALL AROUND. sdf 9/10.
13.23 let the good times roll – dean and sam get separated again thanks to lucifer and dean makes an impulsive decision for sam's sake. the world's silliest angel fight ensues. beautiful moment at the end that unfortunately doesn't last. sdf 9.5/10.
season 14
14.04 mint condition – halloween motw episode. nice homage to slasher flicks, plus sam and dean being cute in their insurance guy outfits. broment in the beginning AND end of episode. dean calls sam pretty a lot. one of my fav episodes to rewatch. sdf 9.5/10.
14.08 byzantium – nice angsty episode. sam grieves jack when he, in true winchester style, takes a temporary vacation from the mortal plane. he and dean (and cas) fight to get their kid back. a good ep if you like sam angst and dean worrying about him. sdf 7.5/10.
14.11 damaged goods – another angsty episode. dean resorts to desperate measures to deal with his annoying skull roommate issue. sam is not happy about it but reluctantly goes along. featuring the hug-from-behind that's become legendary in gifs, and dean saying Those Three Words along with other things that indicate that sam is the most important person in his life. sdf 9/10.
14.12 prophet and loss – the boys go to help donatello who's in a coma. sam is angsting over dean's decision from the previous episode. dean is angsting over sam's angst. castiel is just kinda there. then sam has a breakdown which short-circuits dean's brain and resets it back to common sense. brohugs and tears ensue. one of my favorite hugs mostly due to how Baby Brother sam is in it. sdf 10/10.
14.13 lebanon – DO NOT SKIP THIS. lots of cute moments showing sam and dean's life in their town, plus. john winchester. SO MANY BROMENTS. literally all they do is talk about how much they love each other. they get closure from john. lots of tears are shed. i will never be the same again. sam and dean are each other's endgame and i will go feral. sdf 14/10.
14.17 game night – an okay episode, though it has a great hurt!sam broment near the end. worth watching for that itself. dean takes care of his baby brother and i cry a little into my bowl of chips. sdf 8/10.
season 15
15.01 back and to the future – another okay episode. there's a nice scene where dean fixes up a bullet wound in sam's shoulder, but you could probably find that on youtube too. sdf 6/10.
15.04 atomic monsters – kinda a depressing episode even by spn standards, tbh. motw, again where dean takes a visibly depressed sam on a hunt. the hunt hits too close to home, sam's depression gets worse, and he talks to dean about it in the end of the episode. it was a good scene, was nice to see sam discuss his mental health and dean listening. sdf 8/10.
15.11 the gamblers – motw. the boys go to a bar in alaska to win back their luck from the goddess fortuna. some other plot stuff happens with castiel and jack but eh. the boys play pool and have some nice moments. also, snarky sammy! sdf 8/10.
15.14 last holiday – motw. the boys accidentally release a wood nymph named mrs. butters who looks after them in a creepy kinda grandmotherly fashion. they get to have birthdays! but of course she's not what she seems, etc. etc. some hurt!sam, a few cute brothers-and-jack-as-family moments. sdf 6.5/10 (some marks reduced due to unnecessary and nonsensical inclusion of saileen)
15.17 unity – plot episode, honestly just watch for the moment near the end where sam is able to talk dean out of his existential-crisis-induced mind-controlled state, breaking chuck's hold over him. it's a great moment, but like. i'd say go watch on youtube instead of watching the entire ep. sdf 7/10 due to the moment.
15.19 inherit the earth – the boys finally take back control of their own lives and destiny. the universe is back in order with a new deity. classic sam and dean versus cosmic entities, with nothing but each other and their sheer willpower. beautiful, beautiful ending. the show could have ended here and been perfect. sdf 10/10.
15.20 carry on – the episode that might finally land me in therapy. the series finale that made this entire 15-season ride so worth it. lovely motw episode, full of love and passion and heart, and a monologue from dean that will have you in tears. The Three Words are spoken. he calls sam his baby brother. hands are held and foreheads are touched. i was literally sobbing while watching this, and i never cry at tv shows or movies. even now when i think of this episode my heart feels heavy and full in the best of ways. the entire episode is a love letter to the pilot, to the boys, and to everyone who's stuck with them. it is the distilled essence of what made this show special. i still haven't been able to rewatch because of how emotional it makes me. sdf 34693/10.
well anon i hope this long list helped!!! enjoy your watch <3

Privilege - Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader
WC: 2.1 K
A/N: Sad Spencer post nightmare comfort. Discovering and sharing feelings about each other. Mild angst then fluff. I wrote this after my season 8 rewatch but it’s not explicitly situated in any particular season.
Warnings: Brief mentions of Spence’s various trauma; case issues, mom issues, drug use, generalized dark and twistiness. Insecurity. Swearing. Single sentence implying reader grew up religious. References to sex but not actual smut.
____
With both of us working insane hours, we agreed early on to be casual, and then completely and entirely ignored that agreement in every way except verbiage. Avoiding labels and verbal expressions of affection, I pretended that it wasn’t emotional self destruction to spend every waking hour with this man who was notably not my boyfriend. With the amount of affection between us, it was easy to pretend it was something more. When we weren’t working, I essentially lived in his bed.

I was deep asleep when I heard him whimpering, waking to find him tossing and turning, breathing quickly. It took me a second to get my bearings, but when I did, I woke him as gently as I could
“Spencer! Spence.” His eyes shot open, and he immediately jumped, looked to me with his eyes welling up, and started shaking.
“Hey,” my voice was desperate as I wrapped my arms around him, “Baby, what’s the matter?” The pet name was generally reserved for other activities in this bed, but it felt appropriate now. I ran my fingers through his hair, trying to calm him. “Was it about a case?”
“It was about...” he started. “No, I don’t want to freak you out!” He sort of tossed and turned again, now in my lap. “This isn’t your job, you shouldn’t have to deal with this.” He sounded angry; with himself, and the situation. I tried to ignore the feeling that’s he might be angry with me.
“Why would it freak me out? Your job is depressing as shit, Spence. This is kind of predictable. Talking through it with you? None of this is work for me. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but you can.” I said, waiting for him to decide how to proceed.
He fiddled with his hands in that nervous way of his. “It was about you. First, you were breaking? Like glass on a windshield? Cracking but not falling apart. And everything around us was breaking; the phones and then the walls and then your face,” his voice broke then, “and then my own chest.”
Where the tears were only threatening to overflow before, he was really crying now, in a way I’d never seen him do before. In a way grown men rarely do in our terrible society if they can avoid it. In a way that made it hard for either of us to breathe. “But then it sort of mixed with work, and there was an unsub and he had you, and I couldn’t get to you. I tried, but I couldn’t get to you, and then...” he paused there, and I inferred the rest by his pained silence.
“You don’t have to keep going, I get it. And I’m not freaked out. I’m right here, Spencer. You’ve got me, and I’ve got you too. You are okay. You’re okay.” he didn’t say anything for a minute, and I rethought my words. “I’m not trying to belittle or silence you. I know you don’t feel okay. But you’re here with me, and no one’s broken, and you’re breathing, and I’m breathing, and you’re okay.”
“I’m not worried about me...” he grumbled, like it was obvious. Like I was wasting our time, worrying about him.
“Well I’m fine. I’m good. I’m happy to be here for you.”
He looked up at me doubtfully. “How can you be happy to be woken up at 4:02 am?”
Too sleepy to veil my feelings entirely, with words like adoration and devotion drifting through my head, I settled on saying, “It’s a privilege to have the chance to be here for you, and support you, and help you feel better. I have you, and you have me; okay? I’m here.”
“I’ve got you...” he softly echoed my words from earlier.
“You’ve got me.” I answered easily. It was a simple, honest fact to share.
There was a shift in him then. He pushed himself up with one arm, leaning back and staring at me, looking exasperated and vaguely frantic, like he just realized something was wrong. He looked almost angry as he asked “What the fuck are we doing?
I didn’t even know how to begin to answer that question. “I’m sorry?”
“I’m having nightmares about losing you, you’re like, taking over my subconscious, and renting all this space in my head, and then I wake up to find you here, in my bed, drying my tears and calling it a privilege! Like do you have to be so... I don’t know. Warm?” Well, that was a new one. I had never known that to be a bad thing, particularly with him. He flocked to my sentimentality like a moth to a flame.
He wasn’t done though. “I never intended to care about someone this much. It’s confusing for me. I know you have your catholic guilt, but you don’t have to martyr yourself for me. Dealing with my shit is emphatically not a blessing.” He took a deep breath and braced himself. He half smiled, half sobbed, and to be frank, he was freaking me the fuck out. “Unless you..” he trailed off. IQ of 187; an epic communicator, this one. I gave him a look that begged him to continue, holding my tongue as if he would break, like the dream, if I spoke. He sighed heavily, trying to catch his breath. I reached over hesitantly, unsure if he wanted to be touched, terrified of making it worse. Slowly, I wiped away the tears on both cheeks, willing him to look at me. He didn’t, choosing his lap instead.
I waited for him to continue. “I don’t have a lot of experience with fuck buddies,” he spit the last two words like they repulsed him, like they didn’t fit right on his tongue. Foreign words with uncertain and unsettling definitions. “...but I don’t think it’s supposed to feel like this.”
“Feel like what?” Despite the tears and the heavy air that threatened to suffocate me, I felt a new feeling. Like I would maybe feel better soon. I silently begged him to speak faster, hoping he could somehow telepathically pick up on my anxiety as I hung on every word.
“A privilege. That’s just...” he paused again, shaking his head. I could feel my anxiety coursing through my veins in a bizarrely literal sense. I wasn’t entirely sure where he was going with this, and I waited in suspense as he chose every word carefully. He then looked with me with the warmth I’d come to know, to expect, and to crave. “I know you’re a really tender person but why would you do this if we're just sleeping together?”
IQ of 187, this one.
After his lengthy monologue with its intensely painful pauses I cut straight to the point. “Are we?”
The sadness vanished from his face, leaving nothing in its place but wheels turning. No more damned pauses; I have to be brave now. “I’m not.”
“What?” I couldn’t figure out what to make of his expression. It wasn’t relief. Concern, maybe? Or disbelief? “Just sleeping with you that is. Does that make you upset?”
“No, no, y/n/n, it doesn’t make me upset.” his eyes meeting my face. I could feel that he was about to ramble, finally, and I was intensely grateful. “It depends on what you really want. It’s hard for me to believe that you actually want this.” he points at himself, like that explained his insecure thinking. Honestly, how dare he speak about my person in such a way, but now wasn’t the time to critique his criticism.
“You want to be woken up by nightmares after cases? To sleep alone while I’m gone? and when I’m around deal with my neurosis and awkwardness and rambling? and family drama? and drug cravings?” He dropped his eyes and his voice, “You could do so much better.”
We didn’t have time to even begin to unpack all of that. Not in the middle of the night, on the edge of everything we both want. I could write a novel explaining how he is in fact the very best I can imagine, but that would take time to convince him of. Time like years. Time like marriage.
Again trying to move this conversation to the conclusion I ached for just a bit faster, I answered directly, “Yes. I want that. I want you.” Like it was the simplest thing in the world.
I searched his face for some sort of happiness or disgust but received a blank stare and a look of bewilderment.
“I just want you. I’ve wanted you this whole time. I thought you would figure it out.” I laughed, and he smiled, a real smile that touched his hazel eyes that somehow sparkled in the dimly lit room, finally. “With fuck buddies, I don’t typically snuggle and go on museum dates or stop seeing other people or stick around for months.”
“You want me?” he smiled, but doubt loomed, and his smile fell as his long fingers traced my jaw.
“You say that now, but I think you’re going to find that I am a difficult person to love.” He said, as if I didn’t already know him. As if I didn’t already see him in all of his brilliance and darkness, all of his complexity and baggage. As if knowing him hadn’t been a precursor to loving him.
“Spencer, everyone thinks that about themselves.” I replied, greeted with still more disbelief. I continued in spite of him. “Besides,” I shrugged with a small smile, like my conclusion was entirely self evident, “It’s too late now.”
“What, you think that about yourself? First of all, you are unbelievably easy to love. The easiest in the whole world, probably. I know that that sounds hyperbolic, but I really mean it - I sincerely think that you are the single most lovable woman on the planet.” he rambled, talking with his hands and earning a tearful chuckle from me. “In my world at least. You are in fact, despite my best efforts, impossible not to...” he paused to physically shove the thought away, moving forward with a grimace.
“Second of all, what do you mean too late? I have a feeling I might know what you’re going to say. Please say it, y/n,” he whispered like that would make it less scary. “Or do you want me to say it? I don’t want to spook you but... it’s too late for what?”
“Too late to stop myself from loving you.”
 Finally, finally a look of understanding graced his face. A look like he believed me. He smiled that stunning, whole face smile of his that was reserved for special occasions.
 “Can you say the whole thing?”
“I love you, Spencer.”
“I love you, too.”
He was only half sitting up anyways, so when I kissed him he fell to the bed, and protested immediately. “No! I’m so gross and snotty, stop.” I settled on peppering kisses on his neck and damp cheeks instead.
I laid my head on his chest, murmuring, “You can go back to sleep, and when you wake up, I’ll still be loving you, and I won’t be broken because of it, and I certainly won’t be gone.”
“Okay,” he responded, voice still broken, but no matter. He’ll heal. He’ll believe me more with time. Eyes heavy and stinging, my adrenaline eventually waned, and I was about to fall back asleep, when his voice pulled me back.
“Just to be completely clear, this is no longer a fuck buddy situation. Like, I'm your boyfriend. Right?”
“Was it ever really a fuck buddy situation?” I laughed “But if it was, it’s over. You are mine, Spencer Reid. If that wasn’t obvious.”
I could hear his smile in his voice “Sorry, it’s so late, and my brain isn’t really working and I just wanted to make absolutely sure.”
He paused for a few minutes.
“I’ll check back again in the morning.”
“I’ll still be here.”
~~~
In my half asleep state, his soft words barely registered. “Good morning, sweet girl. I’m so lucky to get to love you.”
“I love you too.” I mumbled, smiling without opening my eyes. There’s his confirmation. He’s always been one for collecting good data, I suppose.
“Please keep doing that.”
Looking at what Sunrise did to Inuyasha with Trashahime, I feel like us Sailor Moon's fans should apologize to Toei for being mad at SM Crystal's failures... Because really, after seeing Trashahime, *those* were nothing! None of SMC's bad animation, or its entire manga scene omisions (that stripped characters of their personalities) or even the "mirakkuru romanusu ad nauseam" that came of the official pairing of ALL senshi x shitenno, *none* of that was as bad as this! We're so, so sorry, Toei!!
Ahahahahahahhah I'm laughing through the pain, why bring back these painful memories 😭
I honestly felt so bad for Crystal because it was so obvious they were trying to address the UsaMamo critiques from the original but it came at a cost of so many of the other characters and their depth. Also, like, GIVE THEM A GOOD BUDGET! IT'S SAILOR MOON! IT WILL MAKE A TON OF MONEY! GIVE THEM AS MANY EPISODES AS THEY WANT AND A BLANK CHEQUE! I WILL PAY!
I was so sad when I realized that the mature look on the Sailor Moon, manga faithful anime of my dreams was gonna that stripped bare. I didn't watch past the first season. I'm still hopeful that there's eventually going to be a reboot that does this that's given a good budget. It would be amazing if there was a series that actually explored the mature themes of the original manga. I love the 90s version, but it's definitely made for kids.
But yeah, I'd take it over Yashahime. I haven't rewatched the show in a long time (like since it came out). A part of me wonders if we're just gonna keep seeing these mindless reboots of shows with a limited budget because they know that it's quick cash.
Also I am a Kunzite x Sailor Venus shipper mostly because I find the idea of them being together extremely funny (he's so serious and she's so outgoing and they're the leaders of their respective groups with likely very different ideas and methods they would be hysterical). It also makes me sad to think that Usagi gets her senshi but Mamoru lost the shitennou and I like to think that they did manage to revive them after the end. Because like the girls they were just normal dudes living their lives until they were woken up. It makes me not only sad for Mamoru, who has already lost so much and probably does get lonely (😭) but sad for them because they never got a second chance like the girls did. Mamoru's storyline is so freaking bittersweet, dude.
I don't care much about the SxS romance (I think it was based on a portrait that was drawn and then the original creator said something about "wanting to explore these relationships" which, okay) but a storyline where Mamoru finds and bonds with his bros again would make me feral. I've read such great fics where Kunzite is the dad/older brother and Jadeite and Nephrite drag Mamoru and Zoicite into shit and Kunzite finds out and then Mamoru is like "I'm your future king" and Kunzite goes "BITCH TRY ME".
All I'm asking is for Usagi to be like "Mamochan, you're going to go have a great weekend with your friends and bond with them and then you're gonna have your own guy gang and we're all gonna hang out forever", she pushes him out the door, and chaos ensues. JUST ONE CHAPTER.
Anyway, not the point, yes, maybe we should apologize. 😂 We didn't know how good we had it.
Time for more after midnight Merlin ramblings!! I'm really just writing this because I need to get these thoughts down. I just got to The Disir episode in my Merlin rewatch and boy oh boy does this one cause a strong urge to cry in absolute frustration more so than the finale(not that the finale doesn't make me want to sob into a lake). It's not that it's a bad episode, it's probably one of my favorites in terms of writing (so this might also be me pointing out things I really liked) like how Revenge of the Sith is my favorite star wars movie but it also makes me want scream into my pillow.
Basically it's Merlin and Arthur's decisions, mainly Merlin. I know Arthur has always been arrogant but c'mon man, disrespecting the Disir's sacred place !! While he jokes about Merlin's worries, he usually comes around and sees how serious he is about something this important. That one might actually be because of iffy writing. They tend to wash away any character development Arthur gets, in regard to magic, a few episodes after he gets that development. But anyways, his insolence is what leads to Mordred being hurt, thus leading to Merlin's big dilemma.
Now onto Merlin which is the number one reason I was frustrated. Obviously he screwed up in telling Arthur not to bow to the Old Religion, since the Disir let Mordred live anyway. I do understand why he did it, but as a watcher you obviously shout at the TV all the things they could've done or taken into consideration. All he's been hearing about the moment he stepped into Camelot was how there is this big destiny he's apart of to protect Arthur, so that magic and peace can be brought back to the kingdoms. And Mordred has been made to look like the biggest threat to Arthur. For him it really doesn't get any clearer than a straightforward vision from a seer. But in opposition, Gaius said the future is always changing and there's no clear path. Which yes! And Kilgharrah was the president of the get rid of Mordred club since he was a child. Poor Merlin is pulled in so many directions because he knows Arthur is so fond of Mordred and you can even see that Merlin was beginning to like him at the start of the ep! The little moment of them paying their respects to the sorcerer and talking about their magic! It makes me so emo. Obviously Merlin is devastated about telling Arthur that there can be no magic in Camelot, but the way I think we're meant to see it is that he's hoping that sentiment will be temporary for Arthur. Because no Mordred, Arthur doesn't die, Arthur gets to bring back the magic. (God, Merlin and his relation with his magic and other magic users is entirely something else I could get into, but I won't for now) But aghh that also can just lead to Arthur's further disdain for magic. Like after Uther kicks the bucket due to magic, Arthur states that all magic is evil. So Merlin, you should've taken that into consideration, Mordred's death would be Uther's 2.0 !! The end of the ep makes it clear that had Merlin told Arthur to bow down, Mordred living would be for the better this time. Arthur would welcome magic into the kingdom and maybe Mordred would've told Kara of the good his King had done, she wouldn't die, and Mordred wouldn't seek revenge on Arthur.
Anyways that's just me being like any other person getting frustrated over what if scenarios. While I like to think oh how wonderful it could've been if Merlin had thought this through and given Mordred the benefit of the doubt, I don't think it makes sense in this storyline if he did. To me this story has always been a tragedy so it was never going to have the happiest of endings. Like he told Gaius, he'd grown up, well more accurately he's been traumatized by what happened with Morgana. So after more than 5? years of seeing the constant threats to Arthur, Merlin's not going to take any chances. I'm not an expert in literature, but I think Merlin has a negative character arc and I love that the later seasons highlight it. Props to Colin Morgan for the scene when he's literally tearing up over having to tell Arthur there can be no magic. I freaking love the parallel to s1 the beginning of the end ep, Merlin being emotionally distraught over the decision to help Arthur save Mordred or not both times, but this time it ends with him choosing no.
Honestly I like season 5 because there's so much at stake and I love when things like fate start to come together. But what makes me mad is that we didn't get another season when the plot really requires it. The first way another season could've gone is Arthur doesn't die in s5 and he and Merlin bring peace to the kingdom, fulfilling their destiny (personally I think Arthur would still have to die at the end of s6 at Mordred's hand but the end credits could be him rising idk!). Second is the last season could be Arthur rising again, but not as far as the 21st century. Personally I would love to see Gwen ruling Camelot with Merlin as her advisor, and then halfway through the season there would be an intense challenge and Arthur would rise again. Basically it was rushed which we all know.
It's late so these thoughts are very messy and contradicting. But one of the reasons I love this show is because it makes me think so much about the characters and their decisions! (also I'm a sucker for tragic heroes) Feel free to add your thoughts and opinions below on the Disir episode or just Merlin in general!
My Anime 9/10′s
With probably no spoilers cuz I don’t wanna talk too long about them zzz.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist
Tumblr media
YALL ALREADY KNOW THIS A 9/10. The only real reason this show is not a 10/10 is because it’s just a story that I’d never rewatch. There’s like 70 episodes, which is way too long for my short attention span, especially since I’ve seen it already. But yeah, by all accounts, this story is a masterpiece and is one of the only “shounen” anime’s that I genuinely enjoyed. No random sexualization. No dumb filler. All the characters have an actual purpose and role in the plot and everyone has their own morals and ideals that interact to make the story interesting. I couldn’t bring myself to really hate anyone, even the villains, because everyone was pretty well written. Also super satisfying ending that ties up everything properly without leaving me confused or upset. If you only watch a few anime in your life, Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty much a MUST WATCH to see a beautiful example of a modern classic anime as an artform. Also I should say that I really don’t like Hunter x Hunter (AN EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL OPINION BTW) but I love Fullmetal Alchemist so take from that what you will.
2. Parasyte: The Maxim
Tumblr media
Same kinda shit where you already know this a 9/10 for me. It’s just a very satisfying anime that doesn’t have random sexualization or random filler or anything like that. Ending is also very good and ties up the story in a way that doesn’t leave more questions but also allows the characters to have a “life” outside of the scope of the story. I think Parasyte, because of its more horror and psychological-esque vibes, counts as a seinen and not a shounen, so for more mature audiences. I also really liked how the story was successfully adapted to modern times since the manga is from the 80′s. I have actually rewatched this anime, but what stops me from giving it a 10/10 is a few things that I found kinda “stereotypical” that I don’t wanna discuss further too much cuz it’s spoilers. I still obviously really like this anime and highly recommend it.
3. Zankyou no Terror
Tumblr media
TBH, this anime is pretty hard for me to properly describe in a lot of words as to why I like it. The art was really pretty as well as the music, which was just straight up amazing. The cinematography of this anime is excellent as well, and a lot of scenes have that sense of being acted out by real people, as opposed to feeling completely drawn/animated. I was a teenager when this anime came out and I think a lot of the themes presented in the show really related to me. The show does kinda have some leftover questions when it ends that prevents me from rating it a 10/10, but I have such a soft spot for this anime. It’s from the same creator as Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, and although those two animes are also very good, they did not impact me as much as this anime did. Recommended for people looking for idk something that gives off Inception vibes?? In the sense that it’s much more about its themes and its message more so than the believability of the events that occur.
4. Magic Kaito 1412
Tumblr media
THIS IS JUST A PERSONAL PREFERENCE BTW LOLOL I DON’T KNOW ANYBODY WHO’D PUT THIS AS A 9/10 ANIME. I JUST REALLY LIKED IT OKAY. It’s made by the same person who does Detective Conan but I like this a lot more because it’s a much shorter series and slightly more mature (more for teens than just straight up kids). I really liked the main guy, I think he’s funny and charismatic. He’s a pervert at times but Imma forgive that cuz of the 90′s. Idk it’s just a really fun anime that I don’t have to take seriously and can just watch and enjoy.
5. Mob Psycho 100 (season 1 AND 2)
Tumblr media
Imma put season two as slightly better than season one. So season one would be like a 9 and season two is like a 9.25 for me. Super super funny anime and I like it SO much more than One Punch Man. I liked that there was a good balance of serious moments, but you can definitely still count this anime as a comedy. I’m typically not the type to watch “comedy” but this anime genuinely had me laughing out loud, while also crying and freaking out right alongside the main character. The main guy is super great because he’s just this shy and sweet middle schooler, and it’s really interesting watching him balance trynna have a normal life while also using his powers for good and such. Apparently the anime was decently faithful to the manga and there’s apparently enough material for a third season so I’d be pretty stoked for a season 3, but season 2 ended on a pretty good spot and was satisfying. TBH, if I had the time, I’d probably rewatch both seasons and bump it up to a 10/10.
6. Vinland Saga
Tumblr media
This anime is just the first season of what I hopes to be a whole series that will be stay beautifully and faithfully adapted from the manga. As someone who read very far into the manga (but quit like years ago simply because I hate slow updates lol), I actually didn’t enjoy watching the anime at first. I was impatient and kept waiting for when like the “major” events would happen. So I watched like three episodes and quit. But when I had some free time, I decided to get stuck in and commit to watching the whole series and I was so pleasantly surprised with just how good it was. I was impatient but I needed to realize that there is no “filler” or like “wasted time” in the entire anime. I hadn’t read the manga in years, so so many things were only vaguely familiar but I think this helped me stay surprised and excited throughout the anime. I’m looking forward to the rest of the manga being adapted because it’s just a good Viking saga lolol. Major themes of stuff like growing up, violence vs. peace, what it means to be a good person, etc. Lots of blood and LOTS of violence like a LOT they are VIKINGS CMON but tbh not really any gore which I liked cuz gore makes me ughhhh. A very good watch and only a taste of an excellent story.
7. Demon Slayer
Tumblr media
It’s just Demon Slayer duhhh. Of course this a 9/10 for me. I don’t wanna write much just cuz the show is so popular. Just read a REAL review of this anime somewhere else lmaoooo. Also yes I did watch the movie in theaters and yes I liked it a lot as well mmkay. I’m mad hype for season two. My S/O doesn’t like Demon Slayer as much as me, but also has Hunter x Hunter as their all time favorite anime. Do with that information what you will lolol.
8. Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2
Tumblr media
Same shit as Demon Slayer. Just go read someone else’s review about why it’s so good lol. Also, unlike Mob Psycho 100, I can’t include all of the seasons in this, because I have very various opinions about how good/bad the other seasons were. But this season 3 part 2, was just plain and simply amazing. While I might not like each season equally, as a whole Attack on Titan is also a modern masterpiece of storytelling. Read the manga if you can.
9. Great Pretender
Tumblr media
I love this anime so much. Such a good and fun wild ride. The whole show is ridiculous but in a fun way. I’m a HUGE fan of heist films, so of course I absolutely enjoyed a heist anime. I’ve watched this show in sub AND dub, due to the fact that everyone is “technically” speaking English the entire time. If you’re a purist, just watch in sub OR dub cuz I did get confused here and there, especially when I would go back to compare language discrepancies.  Because basically I did this super high maintenance thing where I switched back to Japanese whenever the main character had flashbacks, since he’s ya know, Japanese. The dub also has this confusing thing where the first five minutes or so are still in Japanese, but switches to English when a little cue card on the screen goes “For the Viewers sake, everything from now on will be translated to Japanese.” It’s cuz in the sub, the inverse obviously happens where the characters are initially speaking broken English to each other, but for convenience sake, everything from that point on will be in Japanese. It’s confusing at first but I liked it cuz it just proved the whole international vibe of the show. It’s funny either sub or dub when they joke about how bad the main guy speaks English, cuz in the dub he’s speaking perfect English, while the sub has him not speaking English at all. But anyway, great anime that WOULD have gotten a 10/10 if not for the last episode. Like without spoiling ... WTF WAS THAT LMAOOOO. The anime as a whole is super wacky and zany but at least I could try to think it’s real life, but that last episode was just so unbelievable and bizarre and pulled my suspension of disbelief into the STRATOSPHERE that I just had to convince myself that this show takes place in some improbable alternate reality where something like what happened in the last episode is at least 5 percent possible CUZ HOW DID ANY OF THAT WORK LMAOOO??? Once again, great show, one of my absolute favorites, BUT THAT ENDING THOUGH WTF.
10. BNA
Tumblr media
Good super underrated anime that I don’t hear people talk about at all. If Beastars is anime Zootopia, then BNA is Disney Beastars lmaooo does that make sense? It’s a lot more fun and zany than Beastars and I liked it way more. Made by the same people who made Kill la Kill. I really like that more classic, animated “cheap” art style that the anime has, and I also really liked the plot of the story. Not a 10/10 cuz the show does leave a few unanswered questions at the end of it, but this show was such a fun and interesting ride. When I finished the last episode, I was left with a big smile on my face because I just genuinely enjoyed this anime. Recommended if you wanna watch something a little unique and more on the silly and wack side. Talks about some serious stuff, but luckily the show never takes itself TOO seriously, and remains overall lighthearted for a fun action/sci-fi show.
Hey do u happen to know the reason Ladybug is a better fighter than Cat Noir? Cause if you think about it, it really doesn't make any sense at all. Marinette is literally so clumsy that Chloe herself points out there is not a single day where she doesn't over something and her parents were hesitant to let her carry the macarons due to clumsy nature. Adrien, on the hand, has taken kung fu, karate, and fencing for a while now. So how is Ladybug able to beat Noir + other akumas really easily?
Well, anon, if you had asked me this question a year ago, my answer would have been very different.
My answer now is that, you are asking the wrong questions.
(This ended up being an essay so more under the cut)
I really don't think Marinette's clumsiness is really a factor to be brought into play here. The suit enhances her physical abilities and resilience, it's a part of hers and Chat Noir's powers. They've both tumbled off huge monuments and buildings and are still able to get back up like nothing happened. That part can easily be explained away with suspension of disbelief.
(And besides, Marinette and the people around her, for the most part reaaallly don't treat her clumsiness as a fatal flaw or a way to make her seem lesser than she is but that's a thing for another post. Also, of course Chloe would say that. She's Chloe. She's not a reliable source of judgement.)
Personally, and I have always thought this, and it's right there in the show with proper evidence, Adrien IS better at a fist fight. Like you said, he has taken martial arts (he took karate, btw, not kung fu), he is a champion fencer and he's a basketball player as well, he literally scaled his rock climbing wall like a champ just to catch Plagg in Origins, he CARRIED the fight in so many episodes I can name (Simon Says, Darkblade, Miracle Queen, Silencer, Oni Chan, Gamer 2.0, Gigantitan, Weredad, Chat Blanc are the ones that come to my mind right now, but I definitely know that there is a lot more).
Heck, Adrien's entire home life is a freaking obstacle course he has to keep dodging for the foreseeable future! If he acted like how Chat Noir would cataclysm an akumatised object, directly removing the obstacles instead of tiptoeing past them, Gabriel the Perfect Father's instant reaction is house arrest, or taking away his life raft, the only thing keeping him afloat.
He NEEDS to obey Gabriel's direct orders, he NEEDS to appear quiet and obedient in front of his father because he knows the consequences of what would happen if he acted otherwise. His resilience (which requires a lot of courage, patience and prudence) and strength of character is literally what is keeping him sane and alive. He is doing so well despite dealing with grief and loneliness, and more people than Plagg need to tell him that. Adrien’s character is much much more than his direct and straightforward approach in battle and the show does that so well.
Marinette on the other hand, has a different arc. She doesn't NEED to have the same kind of qualities Adrien possesses because she doesn't have, and doesn't need to have an abusive family clipping her wings. Social life wise, Marinette thrives while Adrien struggles. Marinette, after Origins, that is, has a good support system in her friends and her family, which she reciprocates in good measure.
I went back and rewatched that one scene you mentioned in Puppeteer and while Ladybug does toss Evillustrator and Rogercop over her shoulder like they weigh nothing, it was all a part of a complicated, cunning plan Marinette put together in 30 seconds flat. She needed to rely on her intelligence and literal-out-of-the-box thinking in order for it to work. Chat would have handled it differently maybe, (not that his way of taking them all down one by one if Puppeteer hadn't gotten his doll would not have worked) but that whole scene of Marinette macgyvering her way through the situation is exactly what makes her an excellent hero.
I say "better", cause it's with her kind of thinking that their team calls the shots, not because I think Chat Noir can't handle himself or that he's an idiot. He most certainly is not. Hawkmoth's methods need a proper counterpart in order to defuse them, and his M.O is akin to a crash course where the player needs to find a hidden switch that turns it off. Marinette's way of critical thinking is honed exactly for that, even in the worst kind of situations.
However, Marinette is still human, and she can be impulsive, hot headed and she has a bad habit of jumping to conclusions. All these are perfectly understandable and explanatory considering the pressure the poor girl is under. She is bound to crack sometimes and that is where Adrien comes in.
Marinette may be the key to solving a circumstance of high stakes and danger, but Adrien is the one whose entire LIFE is a circumstance of high stakes and danger. If Marinette stumbles while navigating it, Adrien is there to catch her because he is sadly used to, and knows what it's like to be depressed and anxious of failure and disappointment.
See, this is the mistake Fu made. While he did and does believe in Marinette's capability as a hero, he completely failed to acknowledge that it is with Adrien's support that she is stronger. That is why the mess that is Loveater and Miracle Queen happened, because of the mistake that Fu made Marinette make: not letting her rely on her partner.
Marinette's high strung emotions led her astray, but her following Fu's orders to not let Chat Noir (who had a cool head then, unlike Marinette) get the miraculous instead of her just sent her tumbling off course.
Remember how I said you're asking the wrong questions?
I totally get why you would think that. I used to think that too. I would honestly STILL love to have an explicit scene of Adrien's awesomeness, but I'm not angry or bitter about it anymore. It's really not a big deal.
There was never a question about "Who is the better hero? Who has the higher attack count? Who can pull more punches?" Ladybug's competence isn't determined by Chat Noir's mistakes, and vice versa.
It's fun to fangirl over or point out their Character Moments of Awesome, and that's totally valid. But in the bigger picture, or the long run, it's pointless and nonsensical to compare them with each other.
They're not just two people fighting to save a city, they're two people fighting to save a city together as a team. Ladybug's plans ALWAYS involve Chat Noir's input, whether it is physical combat or intellectual thinking. Her plans never fly or are given the green light unless he's on board with it too (save for a few occasions, like Backwarder). If they kept on arguing with each other about who is better, or who can handle this on their own (which both of them were slightly guilty of in Season 1 but have completely grown out of by now) without the other's help, they would not be the success of teamwork that they are.
Their teamwork consists of (but is not defined by) their intelligence, their wits, their quick thinking, their proficiency in combat, but it is ultimately the fact that Ladybug can always rely on and trust Chat Noir that keeps their partnership running.
So the question is not and was never, "Why is Ladybug better?". It was "How much does Chat Noir's presence mean to Ladybug?"
And the New York Special answered it plenty.
