fic: unravel

Shocking, Lana thinks, how easy it is to slide back into old habits. Like slipping on a worn pair of shoes so comfortable you overlook the scuffed soles and worn tread. A sweater so cozy you don’t mind that it has a hole. ~5k of Lana/Mia broken up, breaking up, and getting together, told in reverse. Canon compliant character death. M for a soft-focus scene in the middle.

Damon Gant meets her in their shared office before even the sun has risen, a manila folder in one hand, a steaming mug of coffee in the other.

“Sorry about the early start, Lana,” he says, in the somber, conciliatory voice he uses for press conferences. “But I thought it best you heard from me directly. Please, sit down.”

Lana drifts to her desk, face impassive even as the hairs on the back of her neck prickle beneath her scarf. When Gant’s wake-up text this morning sent her heart thumping, only the early morning hour had stopped her from sending Ema a panicked text. Nothing good ever comes from speaking to Police Chief Gant alone.

“Two cream, two sugar.” Gant slides the coffee mug to her handle first, a facsimile of kindness. So committed to the role he keeps it up even now, behind closed doors. A true method actor.

There was a time not so long ago Lana would have found that sort of behaviour fascinating. Now she leaves the coffee untouched and gazes impatiently at the manila folder. “What is it?”

Gant peers down over the rims of his glasses and sighs heavily. “Homicide,” he says, handing her the folder. “Suspect is in custody, arrested at the scene with the murder weapon. The autopsy’s already underway.”

Work Summary:

So her days have shifted. Her sister calls her once a week. Her office is a backroom full of files and her work uniform is a tee, jeans, and old Converse from her college days. Her boss cries watching sad TV commercials and says “nice work” every time she reviews his case notes. She can fall asleep without help almost every night of the week, and if in the middle of all of it, there’s still something missing, well...

She won’t find it, no matter how hard she looks.

And that’s what she tells herself one hot August night as Ema guides her by the arm, introducing her to every stranger at a party for the district’s fighters and defenders of law, and tilts her head to a woman that Lana can only call “beautiful.”

“Lana, this is—”

“Aura,” the woman says. Her eyes are dark and cold, and her accent sharpens the syllables in a voice that’s deeper than wine. “Aura Blackquill.”

After watching 'A Scandal in Belgravia.', people often connect the line to Sherlock saving John in the bonfire in 'The Empty Hearse.'.

Now this is a valid connection to make, but I rewatched the episode (ASiB) yesterday, and I noted that Sherlock only scrambled to find the code out once John's life was threatened (caring way too much for someone who apparently was in love with Irene within minutes).

Now, for all my good Sherlockians, what was John threatened with?

...GUNfire.

Within a few minutes of Sherlock saying that line, he supports it. Yes, this may just be my declining sanity, but we all know Mofftiss' ability to spread out little things like that and I really wouldn't be surprised if they meant it to also be gunfire.
