Feel free to message me, ask questions, leave comments, tags and/or other stuff! Modern Inheritance thrives on interaction and questions, and I'm always up for casual conversation or discussion on MIC. Cheers! ~Ket
i may have inadvertantly lied about it being an MIC work day, my brain is scrambled from the EPIC underworld saga being released and my 3d model finishing printing.
okay i am fucking WHEEZING because first I thought 'heh, when Eragon tries to dance with Arya and she's still taller than him.'
but then i thought 'no. NO.'
'THIS IS OBVIOUSLY ERAGON AND RORAN DANCING AT RORAN AND KATRINA'S WEDDING AND JUST FUCKING HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES BECAUSE THEY AND ALL THEIR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES ARE LAUGHING AND CLAPPING AND THEY ARE JUST HAVING. FUN. LIKE A FAMILY AGAIN.'
Are you on southern men swing dancing together tiktok?? Huh??? Because I AM
Modern Inheritance Cycle Characters: Eragon (pre-Blood Oath, book 1) and Arya (at least an attempt)
I own a copy of Crusader Kings 3, which is PHENOMENAL for character creation/visualization. So I got tinkering and got a fairly okay version of what Eragon looks like in Book 1. Since he's so young his appearance does change through the MIC version of book 2 since he and Co. spend nearly a year in Ellesmera, so this is just the Boi in book 1.
Is babby!
I...don't know why it's so gray now?? Damn it tumblr.
Anyway. He's average! Eragon has always been pretty average in appearance as far as I can tell. I don't see faces when I write, which makes this sorta thing difficult for me, but I did try to give his nose just a little bit of a hook/hawkish look to it. I feel like Eragon got more of his mother's looks while Murtagh got Morzan's, and poor Brom just gave the kid his nose.
I'll do his transformation and aged up version later.
But we also have my attempt at MIC!Arya, sans scars since I can't add those and a little less wild on the hair.
Significantly less 'alien' than the illustrated book has, but I just want my elves to appear just a liiiiiitle bit off. I'll probably go and do more edits later, but most of the time the elves don't look crazy like 'omg that's an elf' beyond the ears, but they all typically have high and defined cheekbones, slanted eyes and defined jawlines. If you stare at one long enough you'd probably go '..........is....is something off?'
It is more apparent as elves get older (typically starting around 4th century or so) that they start getting more and more 'off' looking. Their eyes get a sharper angle, pupils sometimes begin to appear just slightly slitted, jawline becomes just gradually more sharp along with the cheekbones. It's the original dragon bond intensifying, and usually is more apparent in those who can use magic (which is most but not all elves). It doesn't happen overnight but over decades.
There are those features that some elves are born with, and the ones that all elves are born with but are subdued until they can chose to let them be presented naturally or keep them subdued. That's mostly the teeth, while other elves sometimes are born with highly unusual eye coloration ('dragon eyes') or other manifestations of the original dragon bond, mostly mutations that present as physical draconic traits.
You can't tell me that after all the buildup with Murtagh getting friendly with Brom and such the king still gets to keep him ;.;
I know, we need that to happen for Thorn, but. But hey.
Ah, my friend. Providing hope for a time, allowing it to settle into normalcy, before ripping it away is a form of psychological torture.
And torture, my friend, is what I write best. >:3
But I’m torturing both Murtagh AND Brom. And there is quite a bit I haven’t said about both of them, not to mention Thorn, who I’m still getting to know.
Just a bit of fun for later part of the Escape series:
Brom shifted in Snowfire’s saddle. “We’re almost at the lakefront. We can’t stay long, it’s too open.”
“A rest is what we need, at least while we have the lead and they’ve lost our trail.” Murtagh countered. He could feel Tornac’s movements were becoming sluggish, the warhorse’s strength lagging. “If not for our sake then at least Saphira and the horses.”
Glittering light was already sparking through the trees, the sunset shooting rays into the approaching water to bounce around the canopy. “We’ll camp in the trees here. I wasn’t saying we leave right off with night so close.” Brom assured. He twisted slightly to where Arya was waiting patiently behind them on Cadoc, leaned on the pommel and stroking the horse’s neck idly. “Saphira says there’s no one around for a few miles as far as she can tell, so this is your chance to-”
The elf didn’t hesitate, already in the process of yanking her shirt over her head while dismounting. “Oh you do NOT need to tell me twice.”
Murtagh glanced back and then snapped his head around in a rather painful double take. He followed the woman with his eyes, mouth partly open in a half thought protest as she darted past him, yanking off her boots with some difficulty and practically tripping as she ripped her pants off soon after and dove into the lake with a wild whoop.
“Close your mouth, welp, it’s just undergarments.” Brom rolled his eyes and clicked Snowfire into a gentle trot to the lakefront.
Murtagh obliged him, muttering under his breath as he followed, “Oh, Eragon is going to have a field day when Saphira lands.”

Now that everything has started to hurt after I crouch or cross my legs I’ve got to wonder. I touch on it a lot just overarching in general but Arya and Glen both have lasting damage from those 50-70 years of near constant fighting. They’re still young for elves and heal well due to their race, even without magic or when they leave scars.
But I can’t help but imagine how disturbed the 12 spellcasters must be when they’ve spent enough time with them.
“W…what was that sound? When you stood up?”
“The crunch? Forgot others could hear it. I never managed to fully clear the shrapnel from that knee.”
“Your breathing…it sounds odd.”
“…Bit difficult to regrow a quarter of a lung lobe in a warzone, Yaela.”
“Are you two well??”
“Yeah we don’t answer that question on a matter of principle.”
“The humans have this lovely thing called HIPPA and we are staunch supporters.”
These two babs have so much minor lasting damage that when they get checked by an outside elvish medic they have to threaten her with “batshit ideas that lead to these kinds of injuries. …and my mum will overrule whatever you say anyway.” To get the okay to leave the forest again. They manage and adapt, it’s what life in the Varden and among humans, the most resilient species of them all, inspired in them.
A Note: Arya doesn’t remember any of what happened while she was in the Dream State, only bits and flashes of the initial probably handful of hours as she got ‘settled’ and mapped out what was what, and then the chaos of trying to wake up after Brom touched her mind as a ‘hey you brain dead?’ nudge and found her alive but struggling to leave the dream state (which is why it’s so dangerous to trigger it on purpose).
She only starts to remember small pieces of the Fäolin-thing and what went on during that particular part after Glen brings her to the gravesite that they laid Fäolin at. Which, due to a very distressed Glen’s intervention, is not in his home village, but is in the meadow where he and Arya met as elflings. Glen was extremely insistent that they bury Fäolin and grow his tree there, because it was as close to Arya as he could be without her body.
…Glen’s always been a wingman, he’s a very sweet type.
