Disability Pride month let's not forget about the people in our community with intellectual disabilities!
I just found out about the Stay Up Late campaign to advocate for people with intellectual disabilities to have the right to go out in the evening and not have to be in bed by 8pm
I learned about it from this video:
And I found the website for the campaign which is here:
Let's support all members of our community

Okay, I want to do a bit of lift up today.
Maybe disabled people do actually have some special powers 😛 Mother Nature has to even things a bit so it gave me a cripple body but it also:
- gave me no allergies
- gave me shiny, bright, strong hair no matter what I do to them (bleach, dye, etc)
- made me capable of learning foreign languages very fast.
Let’s all think of 3 things that we think are “special” about us.
Go!

I have been thinking, about how people with intellectual disabilities are portrayed by films/television series. Burdens, Tragic Stories or a Punchline (I’m looking at you adult comedy industry.)
And unlike with other portrayals of disabilities over the years, it still hasn’t changed. I’m not saying the problems aren’t also still there for other disabilities, they still are. It’s just they those other disabilities are getting shows that do display more positive nuanced characterization.
I can understand why. It’s hard to show something that you don’t experience yourself. And unlike with most other disabilities, they sometimes can’t tell you or even know what they want in terms of proper representation. So most of the representation is from an outsiders perspective.
And unless your personally close to someone who has a intellectual disability. All your going to see is someone struggling with something seemly basic. And this representation of the burden, tragic character or joke has negative effects on people’s mentality of those with intellectual disabilities. Some even going as far as thinking that death would be a more preferable outcome for them and their families.
I just want to see a person living their life. And sure they may not understand how to handle money or drive a car. But they still have fun, go places, meet people. They have hobbies that they may need help with, but who said you had to enjoy a hobby alone? And yeah maybe they can’t live on their own. Lucky they have such a great support system. And a loving family whom they love just as much, even if they can’t show it sometimes.
I can only think of ONE film that is like this. And I think it’s high time that changed.

"For decades, researchers have found that child welfare agencies lean on IQ tests to assess the parental capabilities of a person with intellectual disabilities, a deviation from the test’s original and intended use of predicting academic success."

Well crap, tumblr really thinks 'nd' or 'neurodivergent' is just a synonym for 'autism and/or ADHD'
Screw the rest of us with non-typical brains I guess.

Just a PSA that it takes nothing but some patience to help someone with a disability (in this specific instance, an intellectual one). You may even make a friend in the process.
There is a girl in my class, lets call her Athena, Athena struggles a lot with understanding, both due to an ID and due to English not being her first language. The teacher told her she will not pass because she doesn't understand. The other students laughed at her. I will be honest with my intentions here : I chose to help her because I want to be a teacher aide and i thought of helping her as great practice. Whether these intentions were good or not is not the point but i want to be transparent. I knew it may be frustrating to try explain things in a way she understands, because i am advanced intellectually and often think in very "elaborate" concepts and words, so it takes a concious effort to sort of simplify my thoughts, but i thought about my wanting to be a teacher aide and realised i need to get over the frustration, so i helped. In the end, she got her project done really well and retained the knowledge from it as well. All it took was time and patience and a bit of simplifying my thoughts and explain what certain things mean. In the process of helping her eith her work, i got to onow her as a person as well, abd turns out shes really fun to be a round, we plan to meet up this weekend at a coffee shop and do some more studying because she reall liked how i helped her and i enjoy spending time with her as well. I was hesitant help her, but realised quickly that shes super cool and a great person to hang out eith, and also turns ouut im a pretty good teacher too! I'm looking forward to our coffee meeting on Saturday i think ive made a great new friend. Also, another girl in our class spoke to the campus manager about how our tutor (well call her Tracy) treated Athena and so hopefully Tracy can better understand in the future that the way she treated Athena wasnt okay and that neurodiversity (Tracy mentioned taking a course on neurodiversity and teaching neurodiverse students) is more than just a little social quirk and can also mean someone needs a lot more patience when learning / being taught.
All in all, this isnt to say im some wonderful person for helping Athena, my intentions were iffy, but more to say that helping people is kind and takes nothing from you but some time and patience, and if all goes well, you can make a great friend by doing it.

can people with intelluctual disabilitys be programmed? can the core be the host? can the host have a lower emotional or mental age?
For government/military programming: ADHD=Yes Apert Syndrome=No Autism=No Cerebral Palsy=No Developmental Delay=No Developmental Hearing Loss=No Down Syndrome=No Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder=No Fragile X Syndrome=No Kernicterus=No Language and Speech Disorders=Depends on severity Learning Disorders=Depends on severity Prader-Willi=No Phenylketonuria (PKU)=No Muscular Dystrophy=No Tourette Syndrome=programming may have begun will cease if severe. Vision Impairment=No Williams Syndrome=No
In a cult or high-control group methods of programming and standards are different from government agencies. Most people can be taught through conditioning to respond to stimulus.
Core/original alter/part is an outdated term. Dissociative identity disorder forms before a child’s identity comes together, therefore there was never any “original” to create parts from. In DID, those parts never came together.
Host-Alter(s) that function in daily living. There may be a “day host”, a “night host” for the cult, or hosts for various times in the person’s life. Host alters are responsible for most aspects of daily life. Teams of alters may divide up daily life into more manageable and specialised tasks such as socialisation, school, work, and taking care of the body.
Yes, the host can have a different age and act the age they believe they are.

Young Hui
I’m thankful Our Blues involved the beautiful and precious Young Hui in the storyline. Society likes to hide people who are different. Jeong Jun is a perfect example of not sure how to interact with someone who has Down’s syndrome.
Young Ok obviously loves her twin sister. The compassion fatigue of caring for her sister is real though. Wanting to live a life separate from her sister is valid. Her sister requires attention and care and it’s frustrating that her parents died because they should be the one caring for her sister, not her. But Young Ok continues to work and provide for her sister while still living her life.
I hope this time together will help Young Ok understand that Young Hui is a different person than 2 years ago. She’s stable, has a job, expresses herself, and can get around on her own. Young Hui just misses her precious sister.
This kdrama is bringing light to people with different disabilities and I’m here for it.

Including students with intellectual disabilities in the general education classroom is not just about meeting a requirement; it's about embracing diversity, fostering inclusion, and creating enriching learning experiences for all. By welcoming these students into the mainstream classroom, we promote a culture of acceptance and understanding that benefits everyone involved.

ProPublica: Illinois Wants to End Oversight of Developmental Disability Institutions
"Across the country, states have significantly downsized or closed their large-scale institutions for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in favor of smaller, more integrated and more homelike settings.
But in Illinois, a national outlier, such efforts have foundered. Efforts to close state-operated developmental centers have been met with strong opposition from labor unions, the communities where the centers are located, local politicians and some parents."

In a world that celebrates diversity, it’s crucial to highlight often overlooked or misunderstood topics such as mental health counseling in California. Developmental disabilities are one such area where misconceptions can lead to stigma. Let’s break down the barriers and foster a more inclusive society.

boy it would be nice to be able to google something related to personality disorders, psychosis, intellectual disabilities, autism, DID/OSDD, etcetera without finding majority articles that are like “how to deal with a person with X” “how to cope with your child with X” “how to spot someone faking X” “can people with X be cured?”
