i realize how heavily political the story gets after the first book. And I just feel so sorry for Eragon
like that poor idiot only picked up the dragon egg because he wanted a shiny stone. boy just wanted a cool rock. now he is sitting with kings and leaders of the biggest rebellion in history and realizing he is a wild card and everyone is probably manipulating him, he has a chronic pain and also a really sexy sorceress tried to fuck him earlier but his dragon didn't consent
i want to send him home to play with dirt again

Thinking about Murtagh. Thinking about Nasuada. Thinking about Murtagh and Nasuada. Thinking about how Murtagh literally changes his entire being, his true name, because he finally realizes what it’s like to be willing to fight and die to protect another person. What it’s like to love and be loved. Thinking about how Nasuada had to let Murtagh go, both for his own good and hers.
Thinking about how Murtagh and Nasuada both survived a final battle they had no reason to expect to come away from. Thinking about how they are both whole, safe, and free…and yet circumstances demand they must stay apart. Thinking about how Murtagh is immortal, and Nasuada is not. She will grow old while he stays the same. She will live a life without him and someday, she will die. All the while Murtagh must stay away and watch the love of his life wither from old age.
Thinking about all the times Murtagh mentions that Eragon got the better end of the stick. And how, in this, too, Eragon’s situation still comes out on top. Eragon’s love is an elf, and on top of that, a rider. Even if they aren’t right for each other now, maybe someday, a millennia down the line, they will be. And even if not, they will remain friends through the centuries. Murtagh is not afforded even that mercy. He is not able to spend the time he does have with the one person he loves and trusts above all others (besides Thorn). The person he fought so hard for he changed the very core of his being in order to protect. The person he loved so much he broke himself from his own enslavement in order to have even a chance of saving her.
Thinking about how despite it all, he will still lose her in the end to time.

Just a young Rider with his baby dragon. Nothing bad will happen to them. honest.
Rereading Eragon (b/c reading fourth wing and Iron Flame only succeeded in making me want to read something that actually focuses on the dragons/dragon riding aspects. b/c that's why i was there) and thought, hey this would be cute to draw for a speedpaint.
My computer thought otherwise and decided to shut down when i was almost done, corrupting the video.
The doodle got save (thank you csp for your recovery feature!) but yeah, no speedpaint to go with it.
So back to the drawing board. Literally. (and the speedpaint is already late too : / )

Alright, final thoughts on Inheritance.
;-;
Eragon continues to be the guy of all time. I love him. He really displayed a maturity in this book that I think supersedes anything we've seen of him in all the previous books, and just like... His strength really is that he is compassionate and thoughtful towards everyone. Even Murtagh, now, too. He had the realization of how close he was to sharing his fate, sought to understand him, and that was ultimately what led him to realizing his true name had changed, tearing down Galbatorix's wards, etc etc. I don't know that I could properly articulate everything about him here, but Eragon definitely became the hero he needed to be by the end of the series, 100%. He is the only person who could've possibly thought of the final piece of magic to defeat Galbatorix. Even the dreams of starlings are equal to the worries of a king. Ahhh, it's so good. ❤️ I'm so proud of him.
On the other hand, Barst was some bullshit. Bro. Like, on the one hand, it was a very good climactic battle for Roran to participate in, and his triumph was the perfect culmination of his character- cunning in battle, cunning in strategy, the intelligence and charisma to sway everyone around him into cooperating and working together, sheer determination so intensely strong that he was able to crush and Eldunarí with his bare hands. His role was perfect! But Barst as a villain was kinda... Well, first of all, he came completely the fuck out of nowhere. He wasn't mentioned at all until they were already on their way to Uru'baen, and then he was only MENTIONED. They didn't hype him up enough before the actual battle in my opinion. And ONE human and one Eldunarí being enough to beat the QUEEN OF THE ELVES in hand to hand combat...? I mean, I guess that could work but... Ehhh... I dunno. It kind of felt like an excuse for Islanzadí to die, and Roran to triumph more than anything. It was cool, but it was probably the weakest part of the plot in my opinion.
That said though I think it's pretty safe to say this was my favorite book of the series. I'm having trouble recalling all the iconic shit (I took a pretty long break from reading about halfway through the book) but there was soooo much cool stuff in here. The Nasuada being kidnapped and being helped by Murtagh arc is GOLD, Vroengard was amazing, and all the battles were SO well written??? I need to study these books more closely just to learn how to write compelling fight scenes. Honestly, it's gripping stuff. I was on the edge of my seat, despite knowing how everything turns out.
Nasuada is amazing, Arya is amazing, Saphira is amazing, Roran is amazing, MURTAGH is amazing... I think I already liked basically every character in this series going in, but I somehow like them even more now that I've read it again. Everyone is so good, and interesting, and I want to be everyone's friend. I think the only character I liked less this go around was Orrin (sorry to my Orrin stan friend out there). That said, though, I don't dislike him, I think I just went from positive to neutral about him.
Orrin honestly just didn't get nearly as much screen time as I remembered? We only see him a handful of times throughout the book and each time the only thing he's doing is getting drunk and making an ass of himself, though... Idk, he also has a point? He has his own unique point of view, and his own unique experiences that lead him to his own ideas of how to conduct things, and it is definitely kind of true that like no one ever really listens to him or takes him seriously, despite being the King of Surda for w while at that point. I don't think there was a more graceful solution to the division of power/territory after Galbatorix was killed than what was decided upon, because like... Realistically, Orrin was never gonna be high king. He had good reason to assert for the throne, sure, but actually ascending to the throne? That is SUCH a far reach for power, unless the aim was to assimilate Surda in and have all of the humans under one crown. Nah, Nasuada giving up territory and ascending to the throne was the better choice, even if I do empathize with Orrin's point of view. It seems like Nasuada did as well, because even though she was persistent, she seemed to be gentle and sympathetic with him. He even had his line about like... "Why do you even want to do this?" "None of you would understand." Idk. Very interesting, but not tremendously notable compared to others, and he definitely was a bit of an asshole at times.
Murtagh my beloved my BELOVED I'm honestly just gonna make a whole separate essay post about him because his shit is Complicated™️ but one little note it was such a small detail at the end but I love that he said to Eragon "Hey check in on Arya about killing Shruikan. It couldn't have been easy for an elf to kill a dragon." And Eragon hadn't even THOUGHT of that and Arya probably would've been the last thing on his mind but he still was just so thoughtful. He is thoughtful like his brother and he cares so deeply and AHHH!!! And actually I want to see him and Arya be buds. I think they would have a cool dynamic. And also I love that he never once hesitated to acknowledge Eragon as his brother and just wanted to be with him and finally Eragon also acknowledged him as a brother too that last scene with them was just so good 🥹
Also I love how Thorn's like only spoken line in the whole series (until November) is to boop Eragon on the forehead and say "Hi. Thank you for not killing my rider. :)" and Murtagh is just like "Yeah thanks for that. 😒"
Love how quick Saphira and Fírnen hit it off lol. They really played tag and wrestled for like five minutes and then were like "Alright we're gonna go fuck like now see y'all later ✌️" And Eragon's like "Is this??? Okay???" And Saphira's like "Pfft dragon's don't mate for life 🤷‍♀️" Their little romance was so cute.
CAN WE FUCKING TALK ABOUT QUEEN AND RIDER ARYA??? That shit is by FAR the wildest endgame decision Chris made because like. That. That's so fucking. Oh my god??? Like, one, poor Arya!! She just wanted to be a rider and have adventures! She probably would've either spent her time happy herrying eggs across Alegaësia, or she would've gone with Eragon to Mount Arngor, but you can NOT convince me that she would be particularly happy as queen. She's grieving the loss of her mother that she barely had a relationship with, and denied the other eleven leaders for a full week before they convinced her to do it!!! Girlie!!! You deserve to be happy!!! And, two, the obvious point of holy shit that is such an enormous power imbalance in favor of the elves. Like, there is a REASON the riders were separate in the first place!! And, you know, Galbatorix JUST died and now there is another rider/monarch and it's the ELVES who have historically been both the most powerful race, and the race with the best relationship with the dragons. And Arya is the ONLY RIDER LEFT IN ALEGAËSIA!!! Because Eragon is gone (and stubbornly convinced that He Shall Never Again Return Oh Woe Is Him) and Murtagh is... Also gone to an extent. He at the very least holds no political power. Basically everyone hates him, and those that don't can't do more than, like, pardon him, for whatever that's worth. I just can't see this not rubbing people the wrong way, and not coming to an eventual head. Nasuada and Arya are both great, but I just get the feeling there is going to eventually be some sort of conflict between them, no matter how much neither of them want it. I do think Arya is perhaps the least corruptible person, other than maybe Eragon but... I don't knowwww maaaan it's complicated!!
Also I regret to inform everyone that rereading the last little bit did make me ship Eragon and Arya a teensy tinsy itty little bit. Just a liiiiittle bit. Like idk the last fairth and the telling each other their true names and calling each other their true names and Eragon's grief at leaving and his vow to love her forever and her insinuation of maybe one day just got to me alright???
There were a lot of cool magic things in this book! Like the pocket space that the Eldunarí were kept in? Cuaroc's body? More shit that I'm forgetting? God I would just love, like, a magical encyclopedia or something idk. Lots of cool shit. And artifacts!! I want to learn about more magical artifacts.
Also at my Galbatorix stan mutual? I'm a certified Murtagh Girlie™️ and therefore obligated to hold a grudge but like. I do get it. He is a... Very competent villain.
Alright I think that's it for now but. Wow. Man oh man. There is a reason I love this series. I'll probably think of some more things to talk about later, and I'm gonna be participating in the Big Bang, and I'll probably post about The Fork, The Witch, and The Worm as I reread that but yeah!!! Can't wait for November!!

OKAY time for some meta thoughts
CW: I’m discussing death and, essentially, miscarriage-adjacent topics, but for baby dragons. Figured I’d add a warning about it.
So, dragon eggs, right? In the Vault of Souls, Eragon and Saphira are told that eggs that don’t hatch for a very long time come out “strange”; we’re not given more detail then that, so let’s lay out some options.
1. Strange—this could just mean they are weird in terms of personality. Saphira says she remembers when Galbatorix spoke to her in the shell; this implies that an unhatched dragon, though not growing, is somewhat aware of itself. Can you imagine spending the first hundreds of years of your existence in a tight, cramped egg? Not growing, not changing, not developing, and yet Alive, and Aware? How long would it take for you to believe there is nothing else? How much would it mess with your mind to finally hatch, and be faced with a world SO different from what you’ve known for centuries? Yeah, they’d probably be a little bit off.
2. Deformity—it’s possible that spending too long in the egg could also result in physical weirdness. It might screw with their bone density or wing size, making them unable to fly; it might make their scales too soft to protect them, or too heavy to easily move with; it might mess up their internal organs, make them unable to breathe fire, or delicate and susceptible to illness.
3. Magic—this one is kind of out there tbh, but I want to cover it. Spending too long in the egg, unable to physically interact with the world around them—well, the dragon inside may begin magically interacting with the world around them. They may reach out psychically, or enact their will on their surroundings; they may actually learn to control their magic, better even than an Eldunarí ever would, because an Eldunarí has a frame of reference that the unhatched dragon simply would not have, because it has nothing to compare to. And then, if these magically weird dragons do hatch, what is the result? Eventually, a fully-grown dragon with control over its own magical abilities, possibly capable of weaving spells beyond the capacity or even imagination of normal spellcasters. They might even be physically affected by this relationship to magic, almost elemental in nature instead of a living creature. (Side note, I have so many OC ideas right now.)
4. Inert—similar to the petrified dragon eggs in Game of Thrones, spending too long in the egg may just… snuff them out. It may petrify them, turning them into gemstones the same hue as their shells, a la firestone in the Memoirs of Lady Trent series; or else their consciousness may simply fade away, leaving an empty shell within a shell.
Let’s explore this fourth and final idea, inspired by a post by @glbtrx. If a dragon in the shell psychically dies, somehow, leaving a body with no mind… well, hypothetically, if the body itself doesn’t die, you could just… stick another mind in there, right? An Eldunarí could essentially be reborn as a new dragon—or even a non-dragon, perhaps a dying Rider or other magician, could leave their body behind and claim a new, empty one? A powerful one?
Hm. I have many ideas now.

you know, i don't know if i read the inheritance games books as them breaking out of the cycle. avery is different, but she's become wholly encapsulated by the hawthorne family that it's difficult to see the difference. they're all still playing tricks and schemes, they all still live this life of luxury that they thought was going to be taken away from them. skye is gone, okay, but then why does she keep cropping back up? she knows that some things will still stay the same for her, and they do! tobias I is dead, but what did that do? they're going to be perpetually playing his games, it's in their blood, and now they've infected avery with it, too. this whole...golden ticket game. it's giving money away sure (which the hawthornes had already been doing with the foundation far before avery came into the picture), but it's still making people play these games and riddles for a chance at their future, it's still playing with people's lives, whether optional or not. how are they any different from tobias I, how do they not see themselves falling into the same cycle as he was. except now, they're all turning into him. falling in love doesn't change your blood, it doesn't change anything, it can make you worse. avery has....she's not different from them, they say that so many times. life may be good for them, but nothing has actually Changed. sure, jameson and grayson may have changed as characters, but their surroundings? what they do? how is it any different from before, except now instead of being pitted against one another, they are doing it to other people. they are literally recreating what made this whole thing happened in the first place. oh my god. why is this a horror story actually

Do you ever just think about saphira? like she hatched out of her egg and immediatly had the responsibility of an entire world placed upon her shoulders and had to hide like half of the first book and after that, still a child, she had to fight and claw her way through life bc she was made a war hero before she even started pecking on her eggshell. her time in carvahall is a dusty memory. she needs to learn and train and learn more and train more and then fight and fight and fight. dragons are born for fighting. they are not born for war. do you ever think that maybe after they leave Alagaesia, shes flying over the talita the entire day but shes restless at night because shes so used to flying and clawing until her muscles burn and her tongue doesnt taste bloody enough and she wakes up because eragon is having a bad dream or a flashback and his fear is her fear. dragons dont get flashbacks, when they win they just carry on with more pride. but for a moment shes back on the battlefield and sees somebody wounding her rider and thinks hes going to die and she freaks out. and when she collects herself she feels ashamed because shes a dragon. shes wiser than that.
Like i feel like theres a whole part of her character that never got explored bc she was always so "wise" and collected and this really strong, emotionally unbreakable character (theres very few scenes she actually seems devastated and its when somebody dies). We always only see her comforting eragon but nobody comes out of war that unscathed, theres no way she isnt traumatized. but its never addressed - similar to how there are very few scenes with eragon openly struggling/being overwhelmed with the responsibility of having to save a kingdom and fight a war at sixteen. but that kid is so emotionally detached it actually kinda makes sense. Saphira is more aware of her emotions but she still never seems to struggle with a lot of internal conflict (except for being the last female dragon which i get but its only one of many topics that i feel like should have been addressed). we see her even kind of enjoying fighting and in a way i get it, dragons like hunting and have a lot of bloodlust and stuff but theres just no way eragons moral dilemmas never got to her. shes still a more than decent person and i wonder if she ever feels ashamed for her nature but knows she needs to be strong for eragon so she just doesnt tell him.
idk i just think it would be very interesting to know whats going on inside her head, since we only got to see it like once or twice.
