Something something professional artist jargon something something insert art knowledge here—whatever I want to talk about the book covers
Tumblr media
So you’ve got Eragon, with a 3/4 portrait of Saphira; she’s giving a benevolent side eye with almost a Mona Lisa smile, she’s got that gleam in her eye, she’s looking at you but not head on—listen, this was the whole reason I picked up the book in the first place when I was eleven, she was so clearly full of life and personality and I just really wanted to meet her. It’s a really good glimpse of her character before even opening the book. She’s engaging you, but also maybe judging you a little bit, and she has a lot of thoughts but she’s going to keep them to herself for right now, thank you.
Tumblr media
We’re skipping Eldest for right now because I have a point to make. Shush.
For Brisingr, we get a perfect side portrait of Glaedr, the grumpy old man. He’s not even side-eyeing the viewer like Saphira does; he is eyes forward, goal-oriented, noble and regal and, unless you’re worth his time, not really going to bother with you because he has Important Business to attend to. He is The Last of the pre-Fall dragons, his Rider is The Last of the pre-Fall Riders, he represents a bygone era that will never fully be resurrected, but can still inspire the present to fight for the future; he is no longer fully his own dragon, but a Relic, a Memory, a Symbol. He’s not anxious about it the way Eragon or Saphira might be; he has grieved for a century, he couldn’t be anxious about it if he tried. But he knows that keeping his integrity intact is important, and so this is how he presents himself: Noble. Regal. The Survivor. The Last.
Tumblr media
Fírnen graces the cover of Inheritance, bookending the original series by almost perfectly mirroring Saphira—and seriously, it is so satisfying to line the books up with these two at the ends. Though he’s got a 3/4 profile like Saphira, Fírnen is much more reserved. No Mona Lisa smile, no mischievous gleam in his eye; he simply looks at you, and you look back, and you wonder what he’s thinking. He is, in fact, a lot like Arya—anyone who’s read the previous three books up to that point and hasn’t been spoiled for the ending might be able to guess, just from this portrait, who the final egg would hatch for. It’s also a perfect expression for the Final Book, with the fate of Alagaësia and the dragons hanging in the balance: what world does this mysterious dragon emerge into? A war-torn apocalypse? A hard-won victory? What does his future entail, and thus, what do the futures of our favorite characters entail? You ask him so many questions, but all he will ever do is stare deep into your soul with his somber, too-knowing gaze.
And now for the main event:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My beautiful precious son, the red-scaled Thorn, staring you down from the covers of both Eldest and Murtagh. I have loved the cover of the second book ever since I first picked it up, and my appreciation has only grown with time; needless to say I was very excited when the Murtagh cover dropped, and I got to see both of my favorite characters in one place. For both of these, Thorn takes the same stance: a full-frontal combative position, looking You, The Viewer directly in the eye, daring you to judge him, daring you to get in his way. I’ve always had my own opinions about what lay behind this show of force, and the context we get in Murtagh does not disappoint. He may be terrifying, he may be the scourge of the war, but underneath all that, Thorn is terrified. He’s traumatized, he’s claustrophobic, his body is too big for his age; he is painfully young still, and yet treated like a dragon ten times his age because that’s how he looks. He’s also sweet, and playful, and cares so much about his Rider, and wants desperately to keep Murtagh safe and happy. Just like Murtagh, he hides all of that—the fear and the softness both—behind a visage of ferocity, playing into the fears and preconceived notions people have of him, warning enemies away so they can’t get too close to what will actually hurt him. He dares you to try. He’s terrified you will try. He will fight tooth and nail if you do try.

Do you ever just think about saphira? like she hatched out of her egg and immediatly had the responsibility of an entire world placed upon her shoulders and had to hide like half of the first book and after that, still a child, she had to fight and claw her way through life bc she was made a war hero before she even started pecking on her eggshell. her time in carvahall is a dusty memory. she needs to learn and train and learn more and train more and then fight and fight and fight. dragons are born for fighting. they are not born for war. do you ever think that maybe after they leave Alagaesia, shes flying over the talita the entire day but shes restless at night because shes so used to flying and clawing until her muscles burn and her tongue doesnt taste bloody enough and she wakes up because eragon is having a bad dream or a flashback and his fear is her fear. dragons dont get flashbacks, when they win they just carry on with more pride. but for a moment shes back on the battlefield and sees somebody wounding her rider and thinks hes going to die and she freaks out. and when she collects herself she feels ashamed because shes a dragon. shes wiser than that.
Like i feel like theres a whole part of her character that never got explored bc she was always so "wise" and collected and this really strong, emotionally unbreakable character (theres very few scenes she actually seems devastated and its when somebody dies). We always only see her comforting eragon but nobody comes out of war that unscathed, theres no way she isnt traumatized. but its never addressed - similar to how there are very few scenes with eragon openly struggling/being overwhelmed with the responsibility of having to save a kingdom and fight a war at sixteen. but that kid is so emotionally detached it actually kinda makes sense. Saphira is more aware of her emotions but she still never seems to struggle with a lot of internal conflict (except for being the last female dragon which i get but its only one of many topics that i feel like should have been addressed). we see her even kind of enjoying fighting and in a way i get it, dragons like hunting and have a lot of bloodlust and stuff but theres just no way eragons moral dilemmas never got to her. shes still a more than decent person and i wonder if she ever feels ashamed for her nature but knows she needs to be strong for eragon so she just doesnt tell him.
idk i just think it would be very interesting to know whats going on inside her head, since we only got to see it like once or twice.

Inheritance - Christopher Paolini (Inheritance Cycle #4)
3/5 - TOO LONG, good ending, deus ex machina in the extreme
This book has almost 900 pages and it is not using that space well. While some of it is very interesting, particularly the Vault of Souls and Eragon/Saphira's journeys to find their true names, a lot of it is not. I can only hear arguments about supply chains and religion so many times across one series, especially if the later discussions don't add anything new.
The deus ex machina in the end of this book is worthy of an eye roll, but works in-text. I wasn't impressed by their final fight with Galbatorix. By this point, they'd already had so many action scenes that I just wasn't interested in hearing about this one.
Murtagh's character path was really interesting and would have been more enjoyable if it didn't come at the expense of Nasuada. I didn't understand why Paolini took his only prominent Black character and tortured her for basically 300 pages straight all so Murtagh could have a change of heart. If he wanted to focus on Murtagh, he could've added his POV instead of depriving Nasuada of time for her own character development and of achieving her goals of bringing the Varden to Uru'baen.
That said, I really liked that Paolini stuck to his guns on Eragon's ending. I was sure they were going to twist it so he could stay in Alagaesia, but leaving it open-ended is much more satisfying and gives a better finish to Eragon and Saphira's storyline.

Do you have any faceclaims that I could use for a dragon in game of thrones or house of the dragon but not a dragon that is in the show?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Villentretenmerth and the Green Dragon: The Witcher S1 Ep6; These dragons are both Wyverns and bipedal like the GOT/HOTD dragons however they have a humanoid physic due to the fact that in their cannon they can turn into humans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arman the dragon: I am dragon/Он – дракон; Again while Arman is both a Wyvern and bipedal like the GOT/HOTD dragons he is also mildly humanoid in his dragon due to the fact that he can turn into human. His chest is much flatter in comparison to the Wyverns in GOT/HOTD who have barrel chests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drago: Dragonheart; As a quadrupedal dragon Drago might not be a great fit for the GOT/HOTD however Caraxes is mildly quadrupedal which would suggest at some point in his lineage a quadrupedal dragon and a Wyvern dragon mated so he could fit. He does have correct head frills, horns and scaling for the shows though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saphira II, Flametongue, Bjartskular: Eragon (The movie); Like Drago Saphira is quadrupedal. She's a popular choice for Fic writers as for a while Eragon and Dragonheart were the best CGI dragons we had and Eragon is a pretty popular franchise. I would say that teen Saphira fits the least, she's not fully grown so her horns are underdeveloped. She has feathering on her wings for some reason despite still having the membrane underneath the feathers. Baby Saphira had the typical membrane but is also covered in thin fur which the GOT dragons don't have in their fledgling phase.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smaug: The Hobbit; Smaug I think is a very good fit for a none GOT/HOTD dragon. His chest is slightly barrelled and he's a Wyvern. His scaling and frills are good and while his horns are short a lot of the dragons in HOTD have shorter horns too. His neck and tail are also slightly longer than typical Wyverns similar to supreme noodle boy Caraxes.
Some other dragons you might want to check out are:
Elliot – Pete's Dragon (2016)
The lone male – Reign of Fire (2002)
Diaval (Draconic form) – Maleficent (2019)

Eragon: *looks behind himself*
Saphira, Nasuada, Arya, Orik, Murtagh: *nod*
Eragon: yeah, I'd say so.

if somebody asks me why i’m crying just know this is going through my head on repeat:
“Eragon sheathed Brisingr and walked over to her. She lowered her head until it was at his level. He stroked the line of her jaw, and then pressed his forehead against her hard snout and held her as tightly as he could, her scales sharp against his fingers. Hot tears began to slide down his cheeks.
Why do you cry? she asked.
Because... I’m lucky enough to be bonded with you.
Little one.”

I gotta say your Eragon is almost exactly what I imagined in my head while reading the books for him. Great job!
hey anon!!!! thank you so much!!
i haven't drawn eragon stuff in so long and it's lovely to hear there's still someone out there who enjoys my old art ;__; (though i have a really fun thing in my head that needs to be brought to paper one day!!)
Tumblr media
please enjoy this little eragon sketch i did (man i miss drawing him so much actually) and he is leaning onto saphira but since i am physically incapable of drawing dragons, she's just a couple of vague lines lmaooo
