i hate when people discuss sign/traits/symptoms of autism they often you the word "inappropriate" to describe the behaviors of the autistic person

maybe it's just me but the use of the word inappropriate just gives off a gross connotation to the autistic person's behavior?

like why is the behavior inappropriate? what makes it inappropriate? because it's not like what allistic people do?

so is it actually inappropriate then? or is it irregular? abstract? different? even "abnormal" sound better than inappropriate to me

to me calling the behavior of autistic people inappropriate is dehumanizing because to me it implies the idea that autistic people don't know how to behave at all. like as if they can't understand what it means to do xyz.

but autistic people do know how to behave. they behave in a way that makes sense and is comfortable to them. it may not be what society scripted as they way to do something but i think to call it inappropriate is just wrong

A common societal trend I’ve noticed is quite prevalent is the romanticization of certain mental disorders and the infantilization of others. This trend thoroughly befouls our perception of people with such disorders, and in certain circumstances this can be quite harmful.

Disorders such as depression, OCD, and, even to a certain extent, anxiety are all heavily romanticized in literature and media. Characters with these conditions are constantly sought after, and seen as beautifully broken. Their suffering is seen in itself as an art of its own.

Whereas characters, as well as people, who are on the autism spectrum or have ADHD, are very often infantilized, their behaviors being described as childlike. They may be seen as annoying, bothersome, or just a pain to deal with in general. Their pain is not seen as poetic, but essentially meaningless, because their plights seem so trivial. If they are doted on, it’s often demeaning.

I’m certainly not blameless in this cultural phenomenon, but I do believe that it’s truly messed up. I wish to understand why mass behaviors such as these exist. Why do we perceive certain conditions in different lights, and is it possible that society’s preconceived notion of these disorders can change?

I'm sick of people assuming I'm a kid. Like literally everyone that doesn't know me thinks I'm a kid and half the people that do know me treat me like a kid. I can't escape it. It's not my fault a mixture of trauma and neurodivergentsy has made me unable to properly communicate. It's not my fault I look younger then I am. It's not my fault I act childish at times. Like seriously, treat me like the adult I am and don't assume my girlfriend is my mother

let’s stop infantilizing queer people and neurodivergent people. acknowledge they might have difficulty in doing things due to their past and/or their brain chem, but don’t give them free passes in shit behavior. they have the capacity to grow and change, but you infantilizing them won’t help.

getting up on my soapbox for a moment. i find it laughable that nearly every time someone says they don’t like rap they cite hamilton and k-pop as the only rap they can tolerate. because everything else is just so violent and full of blatant consumerism. first off. so is k-pop. secondly. idk how to tell you the founding fathers were some of the most violent people around (coming from a black american descentant of slaves who is most likely related to thomas jefferson. shouldn’t have to explain the relevance here). thirdly. hamilton and k-pop both reference and interpolate rap. so idk what to tell you babes. you do like rap. you just don’t like black people. say it with your full chest next time.
