Hazbin Hatedom twitter currently:
Mimzy is anti-semitic despite not resembling anti-Semitic caricatures or being explicitly Jewish (I'm a Jewish person and I'm saying this is a reach)
The character designs are all dog shit objectively (the body types are obviously lacking but they communicate who the characters are well and I like them)
Hazbin songs are shit and comparisons to Steven Universe (which is also good) is used to hate on them.
Angeldust isn't a valid portrayal of SA and it's ramifications (I relate to him)
Honestly, these people need to get a life. I'm not saying this in a dismissive way but I mean hating on a show and making so many reaches just to further a mob mentality cannot be healthy for someone's mental health.
My prediction is it'll get the Steven Universe treatment where everyone hates it but once the next big queer and boundary pushing series comes out it'll be used to mock it.
I honestly fucking hate twitter and only use it to find out about Palestine news, Verdis Joe, Kwite, and Eruri fanart.

I just found out Banshee is a Zionist. I am heartbroken. It's like when I found out about Melanie Martinez all over again.
As a pro-Palestine ethnic Jew, it feels really depressing to see members of my community fall for the propaganda and support such a vile western made war hiding behind a star of David.
And when she made so many songs about SA and abuse and I've received an SA threat by an anti-semite, and was pushed to the point where I was able to be groomed by the anti-Semitic harassment, and she's using that to justify genocide, it hurts.

Hot take: the same people who complain about Chaggie being hardly a romantic relationship would accuse Vivziepop of queerbaiting if they weren't explicitly romantic.
Also for the people who didn't recognise they were together, Vaggie only ever letting her guard down around Charlie, singing half a song in episode three about how she's dedicating herself to fighting for her, and literally growing her wings back by recognising her cause in life is to fight for her love for Charlie is so blatant that you have to be watching it in bad faith to not recognise it.
Basically, stop telling a sapphic creator her sapphic characters aren't the right kind of sapphic and don't even count as sapphic because you don't personally like it.
(Btw I should probably say despite being a huge critic of Helluva Boss, I really fucking enjoyed Hazbin Hotel and I will discuss why eventually.)

Something that really pisses me off about girls who complain about having pretty privilege is that pretty much all their complaints (catcalling, being used for sex, treated like a status symbol, unsure if someone likes them for them or for their looks) are actually very common in women with no pretty privilege.
Like I'm a backrolled binge eater who can't fit in her jeans and my skin is scarred and translucent but even I deal with that shit. You're not special and oppressed for being skinny and pretty. You're who everyone wants to be. Stfu and stop acting as if we're on an even playing field because someone told you your legs were thin in 8th grade meanwhile people like me deal with harassment and bullying every fucking day.
We all suffer from misogyny but admitting some people have it harder doesn't undermine that.

After seeing the Hazbin Hotel cast, I'm not 100% sure how to feel about them.
Hazbin originally had a bunch of indie and smaller VAs that not many people had heard of and their roles put them into the spotlight. Michael Kovach is practically dominating the indie animation sphere and his role in Hazbin was a large contributor to that. All the voice actors could have gotten that sane attention and more if they were just given more screen time.
But instead it's a bunch of already huge names that don't need an introduction and it's not like Hazbin needs them to hype everything up. It already has a huge established fanbase.
I'm just disappointed. I thought the casting would just be other indie and smaller VAs since giving non industry people a chance was part of what Hazbin represented. But it feels like it's losing that element and becoming more and more industry.
I'm sure they'll do an amazing job but there are so many smaller VAs that could do just as great that wouldn't feel like a phone-in.

Rachel Zegler is being targeted unfairly: let's talk about it.
I feel like I'm in the minority here but the treatment of Rachel Zegler by the general public surrounding Snow White is awful and I want to talk about it.
So I get it if you're a fan of the original movie and feel upset about Rachel saying it has some not so great unfeminist elements and the live action is meant to change that. A lot of people are saying it's unfeminist to say a woman can't fall in love with a man. But it's still a fair criticism to say that Snow White was valued for being pretty, kind, calm and doing chores for men whereas the villain was an independent powerful woman. Sure, it's great to see a woman being nice and that being promoted but I also think Snow White is definitely a product of its time. It's beautiful and I love Snow White's character design but it probably wouldn't be made the way it was in the modern day.
Secondly, I want the live-action remakes to be different from the original animated versions. I would prefer if Disney invested into more new projects, though I won't undermine the amazing work animators are doing for original properties and franchises alike (I know the animated Star Wars series are really popular and critically acclaimed though I've still to watch them). But if they're going to be made, I want them to be different. If Snow White is more about a conflict between a Queen and a younger, newer voice then I'm all for it.
As for her not being white, as a very pale person I don't personally care that much. Rachel looks like Snow White physically and the photos we've seen of her do show a sort of whimsical vibe that Disney Princesses thrive on. If technical inaccuracy allows for a poc woman to be put in the spotlight, I'm cool with it.
Lastly, do y'all not realise what marketing strategies are? The cast have probably been told by producers to spark outrage so the movie is discussed more. They're rage baiting us and it's working. And I won't fault the actors for promoting a film the way they've been told to. There's a thin line between being shamefully corporate and hustling admirably and I'm going to take my fellow artists' side until proven otherwise. Especially since Rachel is currently partaking in the strikes so she can be paid more appropriately for her role in a movie that will likely be huge.
I do have issues with the live action, especially how they only cast one little person to play a dwarf, but that's not really Rachel's fault. Just wait for the movie to come out first and then we can debate.

So Vivzie just tweeted this and I have thoughts that won't fit well into tweets so here I am
Tumblr media
For starters, the criticism of fanfiction isn't targeted towards the queer aspects. In fact I've found that some of the most extreme critics of fanfiction culture are also queer people. From the fujoshi fandom that causes an extreme rise in MlM shipping but largely for fem gazey smut, the unrecognised untagged unhealthy relationship tropes, to the misogyny often within these works, stories like these come with many issues.
The criticism of writing feeling like fanfiction, especially towards Helluva Boss, is that the elements of the stories people heavily critique feel unnecessary, tropey, and derailing from consistency.
In The Circus, I do not fault the idea of a queer character having a childhood crush on a same sex friend. The problem is more to do with how it stunts the desperation Blitz has to keep his business alive, since he's no longer just sleeping with some rich guy but an old friend, and the sudden unexpectedness of their situation. It's also a common trope where the live interests actually knew each other as kids so it feels overdone and generic.
In Exes and Oohs, the mafia setting feels completely bizarre considering the intense bigotry and classism within the world. Not only that but the daddy issues, fridged mum, forced marriage and overall unrealistic depiction of the mafia is very common in fanfiction written by teens who do no research and just want the aesthetics.
Secondly, there are plenty of straight works that have a similar label attached to them. ACOTAR and TOH both have writers who originally wrote fanfiction and they didn't develop out of the negative habits within fanfiction writing. Therefore their original work feels like fanfiction. Riverdales "I'm weird, I'm a weirdo" speech was heavily critiqued for sounding like a fanfiction line.
Thirdly, a big reason for being compared to fanfiction is the unfinished feeling of the scripts. I've already pointed out in a previous post that some of the dialogue in Western Energy felt like it needed to be cut down by an editor. And most people agree that the situations and logic aren't often very well thought through, such as how the aging machine could have just been reversed or how DORKS should have been killed off. The scripts feel like loose first drafts that could use additional edits. Fanfiction usually doesn't have an editor or even a beta reader, I've seen more "no beta we die like *insert character*" tags in many of the fandoms I read for than "beta" tags.
If people critiqued the owl house for feeling fanficcy because it had a diverse cast in a highschool setting with a quirky MC, I'd agree it's a bad descriptor because it's directly the queer and neurodivergent stories that are being attacked. Or if Murder Drones was labelled as fanficcy because it has an edgy teen female MC I'd say it's unfair because a lot of girls genuinely act like that and deserve to be represented and have our stories told. But most of the criticism about Helluva Boss to do with its LGBT rep is less to do with its inclusion and more to do with people feeling it's falling into yaoi tropes. Not the fact it includes queer stories.
This is something We Are Not Alive said recently that such with me, but just because it's an indie project doesn't mean we have to settle for subpar writing. There are loads of indie productions you can support! Murder Drones, Lackadaisy, the animated Anne Frank movie, and these are just some of the more popular ones!
And I wish people would stop weaponising every single argument to try and defend issues in Helluva Boss. The fandom says "of course it has issues" then cries when we point that out.

This should go without saying but the treatment of the helluva boss fandom towards Lackadaisy isn't okay and kind of apathetic.
In case you don't know, there was a controversy where Vivziepop posted a tweet promoting Lackadaisy with a screenshot of her donation and later one of the animators posted that since she didn't post the donation link, they would.
I can understand if this was seen as bitchy, but I also understand how frustrating it would be to feel like a larger creator is using your project to virtue signal and didn't even include any information on how to support the show. The harsh truth is that when Vivzie promotes indie animated projects, most people probably aren't going to check them out but just like the tweets because it's Vivziepop. Either they already know of the series or don't care enough to check it out.
So though it was a back handed tweet, I get it. But that's absolutely not a good excuse to hate the entire project and everything it stands for. Just because your senpai was insulted by one of the many team members? You're doing the same thing the Hazbin hatedom does by starting a war over something minor.
I personally prefer Helluva to Lackadaisy just because of its over the top theatrics and songs, but shitting on another phenomenal project isn't the way to go.

People telling me I'm a hater for critiquing Helluva Boss is so weird to me because, like, I'm in the fandom. I've drawn fanart, I watch fan channels, I have merch. And at the end of the day I'm still thinking about and investing time into it. Beelzebub and discussions around her design are still interesting, and I got to experiment with style when I redesigned her. And by critiquing writing, I am in turn learning how I like stories and how I want to write.
In short, the show is ✨ inspiring me✨.
Just because you can acknowledge there are flaws or issues in a piece of art doesn't mean you're a blind hater. I know the fandom has endured a lot which is why the toxic positivity is so strong, but I'm not hating on the show.

After watching Unhappy Campers, I think I know what my biggest issue with Helluva Boss Season 2 is and that the jokes ruining tension and lowering the stakes.
In E2: Seeing Stars, the whole joke plotline of Blitz and Stolas in the sitcom made the search for Octavia feel insignificant and made Stolas look like a bad parent for fooling around there. If they'd just split up from Loona and had antics to do with their complicated relationships and their daughters, while Loona eventually found her, with the comedy largely coming from Moxxie and Millie, I feel like that would have been better. Maybe even if after the balcony scene, we extend it and have Blitz and Stolas meet them after Loona and Octavia's conversation. But we didn't.
In E3: Exes and Oohs, we see this happen twice. Once when Moxxie leaves the room and the dildos are all out, which cheapens the traumatic experience that was seeing his Dad, and then when we find out Chaz isn't rich. The last one cheapens the stakes by meaning the conflict now could mostly be resolved with Blitz yelling "Chaz isn't rich!" and then being granted the chance to explain himself. But the joke element ended up ruining the tension and we got a fight scene with Millie that looked phenomenal but would have been better if there were higher stakes.
In E4: Western Energy, Andrealphus's existence and his interactions with Stella that cause them to recall the assassination make the fight against Striker feel cheap and frustrating. They got to a point where they thought they were saving his life but we're actually saving him a few more days in the hospital. It lessened the stakes and tension unnecessarily.
And finally in E5: Unhappy Campers, Millie finds out who the killer is really fast making the whole ordeal unnecessary and annoying. It still would have been funny if we say how Moxxie was going overboard with the ruse without the mystery being solved, and the actions would have felt like they had more purpose, but it limited the stakes and tension.
It honestly feels like insecurity. Like the team are afraid to fully commit to the plotlines they write because instantaneous jokes and a focus on drama would cause people to click away. But we as fans want to see the stakes and drama! I just hate to see dumb jokes prioritised over the aspects of the show so many people loved.
Because regardless if you think the plot decisions are good or not, the interpersonal drama is probably the strongest aspect of the show's writing.

I know everyone is talking about the ATSV scene where Miguel goes apeshit but I just wanted to mention how Miguel is still addicted to Rapture, an insanely addictive drug exclusively developed by Alchemax to give him no choice but to keep working for them because he couldn't live without it. In the comics, him becoming Spiderman got rid of his addiction but possibly the trauma or some rewrites of his story makes it so he went back to it or just never overcame his addiction. (idk if there's more to it, I just read the fan wiki)
And I kind of have a theory that there's going to be a massive steakout due to The Spot fuckery that prevents them from going back to Nueva York, and Miguel won't have access to Rapture when he desperately needs it and starts going through withdrawals. It makes him more sensitive to light, as part of the vampire motif, but imagine the insane feral Miguel we saw but going through incomprehensibly severe withdrawals. I don't feel like they'd introduce the drug if it wasn't important, and minor details in ITSV have paid off in ATSV so who's to say we won't see more of it. It may also be a pinch point where he's forcef to retreat in a conflict with Miles and his friends and he can't stay in the sunlight anymore, but he starts suffering majorly from withdrawals and starts to lose control over himself.
Also idk if this really fits but I have another theory that Miguel is going to do something mirroring Miles in Mumbattan where he puts himself in an insane level of danger to protect a civilian, and I genuinely think it might be protecting Mayday. It would be a moment similar to Andrew Garfield Spider-Man saving MCU MJ, where he can't save the person he lost but he can prevent someone else going through the same pain he did.
That's just some theories though. Idk if they'll have any relevance.

Here is my redesign of Queen Bee-zlebub from Helluva Boss.

The long awaited E8 S1 of Helluva Boss released and I feel like it was completely unnecessary.
Blitz started and ended in a very similar position to E7, just drunk out of his mind and maybe not even remembering how Loona comforted him in the morning because of it.
As for Loona, I think it did give her attention but it didn't really add much to her. She was already established as rough and outcasted but socially anxious and sad, deep down caring for Blitz. It didn't really elaborate on that.
As for the visuals that were hyped up for a long time, yeah clearly Bee-lzebub was what Viv was talking about. Her design is very complex and clearly was a lot to animate. But I'd be lying if I said the animation consistency didn't suffer because of it and I kind of feel like the design was a bit cluttered.
I also feel like it really suffered that she was made a wolf furry with a bee motif rather than a straight up bee. Like it was right there. I'm actually considering redesigning her to be a bit more cohesive and a bee because I was so disappointed. But I did love the honey hair, though I wish it had been the focus instead of competing with so many other elements.
I'm trying to find things about the story I like and I usually can buy this time I'm really stretched. Like, I don't think I liked this episode. At all. I know I've been super critical of HB and I don't want to be, I want to love it like I used to, but I can't. This episode just feels unnecessary and it hurt to say it because I was looking forward to it.

*Across The Spiderverse Spoilers*

I'm just gonna rant a bit about whitewashing Miguel O'hara and how people don't know the difference between race and ethnicity.
Disclaimer: I am not poc. I'm white passing (Jewish whiteness is complicated) and if you are poc then I'd love to hear your perspective. I'm just repeating the views and teachings of poc figures and their analyses of media and representation.
So there's been a lot of crackering towards Miggy. It's happened to most of the poc characters, don't get me wrong, but I feel like Miguel's has fallen under the radar for the most part. But Miguel is often drawn with very light skin even though the movie has portrayed him as having light brown tan-ish skin.
Tumblr media
This is a screenshot from the train scene. As you can see he is still very much a light skinned person, not pale but a light skinned poc. And yet somehow people still make his skin way lighter than this. Practically the same colour as me and I'm Scottish and have ridiculously sensitive skin that makes me avoid harsh sunlight. Like it's not even that dark. And the train scene is bright as hell anyways, harsh sunlight and the white train exterior reflecting onto the characters, everyone's skin was lighter so I'd say his skin tone may even be a bit darker than this.
And often the excuse is that he's half Irish. But like, do you realise how terrible of a justification that is? Zendaya is half white. Barrack Obama is half white. Halle Bailey is half white. Are they perceived as white? No. Lukas Arnold is half black. Halsey is half black. Are they perceived as white? Yes. I'm not arguing Miguel doesn't have white heritage, but Miguel, at least in ATSV, is Latino passing. Just like I'm half Jewish and half British White but look more like my white mother, with the exception of my warm undertones and dark hair, meanwhile my Dad, Aunt, Grandad and Uncles are very explicitly Jewish/Middle Eastern passing. Nobody is arguing I don't have non white genes in me and according to eugenics I'll never technically be white, but I'm white passing. Similarly, Miguel has white genes in him and his Irish heritage could very well be part of his identity (I haven't read the comics so idk) but he's Mexican passing. He has Mexican phenotypes and you are erasing them by lightening his skin.
In short, if you want to know if a character or person is white or not, ask yourself how cops or airport security would profile them. That will give you your answer.
This is something Harriyanna Hook touches on in some of her videos, she's a queen, but I think the main reason why whitewashing Miguel isn't as openly critiqued as whitewashing other ethnicities, including light skinned ones, is that light skinned and white passing Latine people are overrepresented in Hollywood and the media to the point where people who aren't even Latine can be cast as Latine characters. Case in point: Ronni Hawk. It's incredibly rare to see anyone in mainstream Hollywood who doesn't pass the paper bag test unless they're a black man, which has its own history of fetishism and abuse (Watch F.D. Signifier, he talks about this in his colourism video.) Race and ethnicity are not the same thing but they influence how you're perceived.
(This is not me saying that they don't deserve to be represented, every culture deserves attention and representation, but dark skinned Hispanic and Afro-Latine people often get erased. Miles Morales is the exception, not the rule.)
So people don't tend to pick up on the erasure of Latine features and skin colours because it's so normalised.
I don't want to call out any artists in particular, that's not cool, but if you do see an artist who lightened the skin, I think it's important you let them know that it's an issue. They're more likely ignorant than intentionally harmful, but I feel like education around this issue is still very important.
Also idk if this is an ethnic thing but please stop giving him a K-popish soft boy face. This isn't an ethnic issue, it's an artist's having same face syndrome issue, but Miggy is hot enough without you erasing his sharp facial features. Istg if it weren't for his suit half of his fanart would be unrecognisable.
