BOUND 2 , miles morales
Tumblr media
you and miles just saved the multiverse and destroyed a collider that would ruin everything. everyone made it home but you, you were stuck in a dimension that wasnt even yours.
angst, fluff??, miles being bad at comforting, your called sol which means sun/sunshine in english, based off of spiderman itsv w spiderman atsv spoilers, minor google translate spanish, cussing, miles the rizzler
Tumblr media
you walked toward the edge of the destroyed collider, wiping the dried tears with the tips of your fingers. you dangled your feet over the burnt ground.
miles walked toward you and stood behind you, “whats wrong, sol?” he asked. you looked up at him, your mask was scrunched up in your hand.
you hated what you were gifted, you hated what you did with your gift, you hated the entire saying with great power comes great responsibility. nothing about this was great.
“i just cant believe, I’ll never get to experience my actual life.” you said, your face contorting into disbelief. miles placed his hand on your shoulder, “this is your actual life now, luz del sol.” he tried.
miles didnt understand the situation you were caught in. he lost uncle aaron and calls it a sob story, the moment you saw lyla and the random dude who remained anonymous tell you infront of who you thought was your family that they somehow warped you from your earth you didn’t understand.
your parents looked at you guilty, the anonymous spiderguy made sure that you were completely aware of where you belonged wasnt earth-1610.
“miles..” you began, “you belong here. this is your earth, your life. but mine.. I’ll never get to experience it. because for some odd reason my dimension decided to self destruct itself seconds later i was warped off their earth.” you explained.
you felt the tears rebuild themselves, “it wouldn’t even allow me to try to get back there. and the stupid surgery i had gotten wasnt consensual at all! and im just stupid stupid-“ you yelled out in frustration. miles grabbed your hands and pinned them over your head.
the different position made you stand up right infront of miles, “stop talking to yourself like that, okay?”
“you’re not stupid, you’re not anything. you mí luz del sol.” miles said, he looked in your eyes with full sincerity.
“i think..” you giggled, “i think were bound to.. miles.” you said look back in his eyes.
“what?” he chuckled softly, releasing your hands from the position. “like..like the song?” he asked.
“yup.” you smirked, “we’re bound to falling in love.”

cupids arrows; karma kicked her in the butt
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing- not exactly enemies to lovers but along those lines. idol niki x idol fem reader park y/n (jays baby sister) (debuts in gg)
warnings- fake friends, idk how kpop auditions work so bear with me, light swearing, lmk what else
wow, proofread this time
synopsis- flashback as jay's younger sister in school, you and your friend decided to audition for hybe at the age of 14. when you pass and she doesn't, you get selected to join a survival show. when your and the one member younger than you debut and you don't, you are announced as the 8th member of enhypen. how does getting cheated on benefit the fact that you and niki aren't very fond of each other?
chapter one; karma kicked her in the butt
masterlist -> next
"we should audition!!" you screamed as you showed your friend, I-jun, your phone screen. displaying the announcement from hybe saying they're looking for people to audition for their new girl group.
''sure. why not? after school on monday we'll go" she said from her spot on your bed. she was sleeping over and it was a friday night. enhypen just debuted and everyone at school called you 'not-so-famous park kid'. how motivating.
you texted your boyfriend telling him all about it. he was the best boyfriend ever.
~
monday after school, you and I-jun walk over to the hybe building and wait in line. there was a crowd of about 40 when you two got there. the line got to about 100 people by the time it was I-jun's turn.
"Hello! my name is Hwang I-jun. i am 14 years old and hope to be able to work with you in the future." she introduced herself to the judges and began to sand a song in english, korean and danced. her vocals were good, they were stable but her dancing was something she could work on. she wasn't bad, but her vocals were very shaky when dancing.
"next!"
"hello, I am park y/n. i am 14 years old and i hope to become and idol just like my older brother." your vocals were like honey and your rap was so good. you had precision in your dance and nothing was wrong.
the other people lined up did their auditions and the judges went to the waiting room. they announced who passed the first audition.
"Ae-sol, Kim. Jin-sol Park, Y/n Park, Sook Lim, and, Eun Jung! Please fill out this form and give we will update you on when the next audition is within the next week or so. otherwise, you may go home! thank you!" you stood with your mouth open in shock and you felt I-jun's eyes on you.
"good job y/n. you did good, i should have practiced like you told me too. i guess i was just being a shit-head" she said, almost forcing herself to.
on the walk home, you were still in disbelief. you enjoyed the evening breeze and walked I-jun home. she was never that rude.
''don't you think one famous kid is enough? like why two? to brag? i mean, he's not that famous. he'll probably flop and end up disbanding" she was obviously jealous that you passed and she didn't. it was uncalled for and unnecessary for her to say that about jay
"i don't know but anyway, see you tomorrow at school. study for bio!" you dropped her off at her house and facetimed jay on the way home. he made you feel safe. despite his tight schedule, he always responded to your texts and calls. he was the best big brother and you wouldn't trade him for the world
"hey kiddo! how are you?" his voice was comforting and warm
"hey, im ok. how about you? how's life being famous and all?''
"its alright. have you done anything today? you don't usually call out of random like this"
"yeah, i wanted to tell you that me and I-jun auditioned for the new girl group audition at hybe. i passed the first audition, she didn't and she sounded really mad"
"now way! congrats! kind sucks that I-jun didn't. if shes being mean to you, tell me because i'll beat up anybody who hurts you. heh"
"Y/N!!!! wassup!! you passed the first audition? thats awesome!" jake was shouting in the background while all the members gathered around to talk to you.
"niki, are you going to say hi or something?" sunoo asked in his motherly tone, almost a whisper
"nah, tell her im sleeping" he rolled his eyes and walked upstairs.
"well, i gotta go jay. I'm home and i don't want you to hear mom and dad's 'happy' shouts"
"ok, bye kiddo! text me before and after the next audition! eat and drink water before i sneak out of here and force feed you"
"ok, bye jay! love you!"
"love you too kiddo" you hung up and walked inside.
"sweetheart! how'd it go? oh, i mean. welcome home honey."
"hi mom. i passed the first audition but I-jun didn't."
"oh. honey. i'm sorry. it'll be okay"
"don't be sorry, she said rude things about jay. karma kicked her in the butt" maybe she deserved it. you went up to your room and went to sleep. you had a bio exam tomorrow after all.
tuesday morning arrives and your phone is blowing up. tons of classmates congratulating you and a handful being rude.
after the bio exam, you had lunch. to avoid any interactions, you went to study hall. finally, peace and quiet. you checked your email and saw that hybe had sent an email confirming the next audition.
you texted jay, knowing there was a possibility he was busy. after school, you felt the buzz you were waiting for, in your backpack
jay big bro <3: hey kiddo! sorry i responded so late, i had dance practice. im so proud of you! you'll definitely pass. love you kiddo!
your shoulders dropped with relief when you saw jays contact on the screen of your phone.
~
the day of the audition came and you texted jay before you entered the building.
y/n: hey jay! i know you're probably busy being famous and all but i'm about to go in for the second audition. wish me luck! love you!
jay big bro<3: hey kiddo! good luck! i love you too! im so proud of you!
his reassurance was all you needed to push you into the doors of the audition.
after about two hours of evaluations, singing, rapping, and dancing, they announced who would go on the survival show.
"The participant who will be competing in "My High School Dream' is, Y/n Park!!! congratulations y/n." you were in shock and you couldn't believe it.
your first instinct was to text jay about it.
y/n: i did it!!! i made it! im going to be on 'My High School Dream'!!!!
jay big bro <3: hold up
he facetimed you and started shouting random things.
"guys! come here! y/n passed!"
the guys *unnecessary* shouts were all you heard. luckily you were at the park, sitting on the swings.
"congrats y/n -_-" of course. niki wasn't happy for you.
"thanks niki." all you heard was a sarcastic 'uh-huh' before jay came back after all the guys congratulating you
"i told you you'd make it! congrats kiddo. i love you so much. did anyone else make it?"
"thanks, i love you too. no, it was just me but they told me there would be 12 other girls competing to make one group."
"it'll be ok, kiddo. where are you?"
"im at the park. i was going to head over to Hyu- a friends house after you hung up"
"oh? who's that?"
"just a friend, uh. yeh"
"ooookaaaay. be safe. love you kiddo"
"love you too jay. i will"
your shoulders went up after accidentally telling jay about your boyfriend. he was the only one who didn't know about Hyun.
little did you know, jay texted your parents and told them to buy a cake quickly. he also mentioned Hyun. they told him who he was but that didn't matter.
when you got to Hyun's house, you greeted his parents and told him the news. he was so happy for you and after about half an hour. you walked home excitedly, unknown of what was waiting at home.
"SURPRISE!!!!! WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU! WE LOVE YOU!" they were waiting at the door of your house with a cake and banner in their hands.
"thanks mom and dad. i love you too"
you ate cake and celebrated. you received an email telling you where/when to go. school wasn't the easiest, but you made it for the week you had left before leaving.
taglist- send an ask or comment to be added

Immortal Being that Still Somehow has Parent Issues: Myul Mang/Doom (Doom at your Service) Lee Yeon & Lee Rang (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Jeong Gu-won (My Demon)
Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned.
***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness

My silly little top tens
yeen rambles #10
stealing this idea from the wonderful @whitestorm4prez bc originality is dead!!!!!!!!!!
anyways ive only read the first arc but most of the major shit was spoiled for me on the internet.
#10 Thrushpelt. i love him!! he's such a nice guy. i feel really bad for him for his one-sided love of Bluestar. she missed out frfr. but even when Bluestar makes it super clear she doesnt like him, does he hold a grudge? no. does he resent her? no. what does he do? become her friend instead. amazing man.
#9 Darkstripe. i think he's both the most hilarious and fucking balling my eyes out sad villain ever at the same time. dude just got fucked over most of his life. i mean i find him sily because every time he tries something, it fails horribly. but at the same time, he's got fucking no-one. he's alone. no friends, nothing. the one guy he trusted with his life turns out to not even care about him at all. i mean seeing him scramble to revive what little there is left of tigerstars plan, seeing everyone leave him, him realising that nobody was truly on his side. his last moments preaching for a dead man who never cared for him. his life being over like that. he never did anything meaningful, and he died like that. im gonna write more abt this a some point but yea!!
#8 Tallstar. his character arc is one of the most heartwarming things ever. yes, he was a shitty leader, but do ya know what? he grew as a person. he changed and made himself better. i also think him and Jake r cute and i LOVE the headcannon that he thought fireheart was jake coming to save him and his clan.
#7 Bluestar. RIGHT OK. i know i say i hate her but by god how can i not like her at the same time???? i mean all her life was just horrible shit. and she stuck through it. i know she was a real bitch coming towards the end of her life, but she stayed, stone faced and understanding to most cats around her. tigerclaw was just the straw that broke the camel's back. but most of her life she was so awesome.
#6 Cloudtail. i think hes such a silly guy!!! he's a big hot-headed atheist!!! silly guy. him and brightheart are so cute together. and yea thats it literally hes just silly thats why i like him
#5 Longtail. I LOVE HIM SM OMGGG the fan service he gets is so good. but the most important thing is his character arc. from being a bully, but all round loyal cat, to desprately trying to prove his loyalty to firestar by any means possible. longtail thinks that firestar sees him as disloyal, but firestar proves him wrong, asking him to come on the journey with him the relationship between them is so nice to see.
#4 Greystripe. what a guy. hes amazing. he puts up with firheart way more than he should have to. i mean fire is a straight up dick to him alot of the time and he sticks with him like a loyal friend. i love him hehehe
#3 Ashfur. if u cant tell already, i like villains. i like Ashfur alot actually. cant help feeling bad for him. mans had a rough time. grew up without a mother, was practically ignored by his mentor, when he finally found someone who gave him a little attention who does undeniably treat him like her mate, she just turns around and goes "yeah no lol i was just w u to make brambleclaw jealous lmao." he was plunked right on his head and left alone with no-one to care about him. the only person who slightly cared about him was his sister, and she was too caught up in her own shit to help. its the sticky feeling you have knowing that if he were just cared for right, he could have turned out just fine. instead, he was neglected and left to become what he did.
#2 Hawkfrost. i love the fan service hawk gets honestly. im a huge fan of the artwork he gets. hes cool. i like the idea of him feeling the need to prove himself to his father. but yea hes just cool thats why i like him tbh.
#1 to absolutely no-ones surprise, my #1 fave warriors character, is SOL. hes so silly. but no fr, hes the funniest fucking villain ever. he sucks ass at being a fucking warrior and he comes accross the clans and is just like "yea yk what im gonna fuck with em." he literally gaslight gatekeep girlbosses all 4 of the clans and he actually gets away with it. i also just like his whole asthetic, and THE FUCKING FAN SERICE HE GETS???? HOLY SHIT ITS SO COOL. i swear you cant make Sol fanart look bad bc hes just so fuckin cool. silly little guy!!

helloo🤍
its been about 2 days since my last post, and i have been resisting the urge to spam post every going on that has happened in my life over those 2 days, but i decided to leave it until now to not only talk about what i did, but also talk a bit more about myself as looking back i feel like i really could have said more instead of being so vague and listing a few basic interests!!
i also want to add that i am super grateful for the few likes and followers i’ve gained, i honestly thought this page would just be me and my thoughts but the fact that some, albeit only three or four, people actually find interest on what i’m posting on here really does mean a lot to me and i am so grateful for that 🎀
now into what i have done the past few days; on sunday i rotted in bed as usual until about 12 as my mum was at work and my dad was at the beach with his friends, but when i decided to do something, we went to ikea!! i love going to ikea so much for numerous reasons, notably the food (not the queues though, im convinced they drive me to insanity) and also coming out with many random things that i would have never anticipated buying when i first went in. when we left ikea we headed into town as we thought we might aswell buy some things there aswell which i was super happy about!! i went into hmv and finally found a lust for life cd (it’s always out of stock!!) and i brought a sza cd for my best friend as i’m going to see her this christmas (she lives over 200 miles away now but i used to be neighbours with her) and i’m really really excited for that!! we also went into h&m, aka literal heaven for me, and i brought 3 lace tops and one of those foldover shoulder jumpers and i’m OBBSESSED with it!! even though it was short i’d say it was a super successful shopping trip🤍
once we had finished in town, we stopped off at waitrose to buy the weekly shop, we got the normal things along with one of those 12 packs of fairy cakes because i absolutely adore them!! they are so so delicious honestly!! by the time we had finished in waitrose, it was getting super dark, but i absolutely love car drives in the dark; i spent the whole journey listening to ultraviolence and some unreleased lana songs like break my fall and some aka songs(my fav album)!!
once i got home, i of course gave my dog some treats and then went upstairs to rot in bed just a bit more because i can never have enough of that in my life if i’m honest 😭 overall i really enjoyed that day and would give it at least a 9/10!!🎀🎀
the following day; today, was not too bad!! being a monday, i had school today and i woke up feeling really pretty and clean as i used my new sol de janeiro cream yesterday in my shower🫧 here’s a photo of me this morning!! ↓
Tumblr media
obviously i hadn’t used my heated eyelash curler by then so ignore how flat my lashes are!!🎀 it was raining this morning to i managed to get a lift into school in the car from my dad which i was really happy about as i would have hated to have got my hair wet when it looked so pretty!! i go to private school so i put my uniform on and got ready, i also watched the sunrise this morning while i had my coffee which was so lovely and i really enjoyed sitting at my windowsill and just thinking really; as boring as it sounds, it’s actually one of my favourite past times 💕
i had such a good day at school today!! my best friend imogen was in today which was so great, but alot of my other friends were off to a badminton competition, which they won!! my lessons were pretty normal, nothing too special - just things like english, science and history which don’t get me wrong i do love, but do get a little bit repetitive at times!!
i got the bus back home and arrived back about half an hour ago and got changed into my victoria’s secret pyjamas and took my makeup off. i also made sure to give my dog a treat and she decided to come up to my bedroom which was so adorable!! my close friend olivia is coming over to my house tommorow, which i am vet excited for as it is always so lovely to see her 🎀 i’ll give you all another update sometime soon within the following days, bye for now x 💕

now that galahad's out (he should have won btw) sol or dbb need to win. id be fine with either (top 2 fandoms im normal about) but im just going to drop sol propaganda here because there's less of it
so he showed up at the lake all ominous and shit, and gave what i remember to be the vaguest fucking prophecy ('a great darkness is coming' or something like that) but i could be wrong (its been a while since i read PoT). anyways! there's this big battle for reasons that aren't relevant, and the sun just fucking disappears! we know it's just an eclipse, but these are feral cats living in the woods so everyone understandably loses their shit except for Sol, to which he 'reveals' that this is the darkness he was talking about (okay canonically he did know but i dont think that was ever made clear in canon and i like to think he was just bullshitting his way through all this). everyone is like 'HOLY SHIT HE STOLE THE SUN' and he uses his newfound influence to make all of ShadowClan abandon their religion, laws, and morals (warrior cats has an unfortunate tendency of conflating those things but still). he gets found out and exiled eventually ofc but he's still remembered as the cat who stole the sun and manages to manipulate onestar a bit in the next arc
oh yeah he also claimed to have connections to an ancient prophecy he knew nothing about to gain influence with these three overpowered teenagers in particular
so ANYWAYS he should win i think. or at least get far. fightcat-wise ashfur/the impostor (yeah yeah amogus. very funny. anyways) mightve been falser (and. more successful) but he's also not on here SO. solsweep
I have to give him style points for that holy shit. Even if he loses he wins the prize of “Coolest Title” in my heart

anyways my early plural characters would be like. "ahah!! the character but they have the EVIL side" except not always?? its been a wacky history. i blame skulduggery pleasant first and foremost, and the mlp fandom, and undertale, and whatever else i must have watched. anyways i then proceeded to write this entire post and put in too much labour to not post it so i curse thee.
the first was my sona character who i made before anything. (based on stuff from my real life) they had an evil black snake. then i added a white cat that was meant to be good like it were the opposite of the snake before turning out to also be evil but just in a different way. and then there was a grey wolf i added which i think was meant to appear evil but was actually good unlike the other two bitches.
there was my mlp alicorn oc who was a result of an evil bad pony basically shoving dead souls inside of them that were from different times and places, for experimenting reasons. this included a serial killer and i think some others?? but the only ones i remember clearly are my ocs icicle blossom (child) and shining meadow (caretaker) who actually knew eachother when they were alive.
they came from a time where tldr an alicorn ruler was driven to 'madness' and so the pony citizens started a war against her. shining meadow didn't agree with the ruler, but for some reason there weren't enough resources for the resistance?? so shining meadow joined the queen's side but sent food and money back to icecicle blossom. but one day between a misunderstanding and a fucked up pony soldier, icicle blossom ended up being killed, but i don't thinking shining meadow found out until the ends days. shining meadow had ended up becoming a general at some point (because why not) so basically not only did she find out all her efforts were for nothing, to cap off her despair she got fucking GUILLOTINED not long after <- none of this is altered in retrospect, this was legit the story and like yeah i still wasnt in highschool yet. so anyways, neither of THEM were evil, meadow was just morally grey and blossom was just an innocent kid.
then i made original human characters where several of them made pacts with demons. if you summoned a demon and performed an act of great pain then you could make a wish in exchange for your soul. my main character was a child whose parents wanted a wish and didn't love their child enough to not be utterly cruel, so they performed the ritual wishing for eternal life but forcing the "act of great pain" part on their child. except they fucked up the contract with their wording so the demon just ended up killing them for fun (they didn't make themselves immune to murder). so yeah then that character has a demon attached to them. which is EVIL but they're a demon so you can't rlly blame em. i forgive the big bird demon they did nothing wrong other than everything they did wrong.
and ig in current day i DO have a system oc, but im not gonna talk abt em because they don't have any story yet. but they do have an alter that's just a big rat and so that means that they're clearly superior to all these other posers.
anyways, big fan of vyncent sol. big fan of lucy elfen lied. big fan of peter and exandroth. big fan of nightmare moon. big fan of frisk and chara. big fan of probably some other characters i forgot. if this post made you cringe you can press a big red button that vaporises me its on your lef-- **i am turned to dust**

Ink Stained Cloud: Ch 2
Summary: Geostigma has taken over the planet, and the Firsts are sent to capture the creature spreading it. They had no idea the creature was a cursed Cloud Strife of a different time.
Inspired by this prompt by @im-totally-not-an-alien . A rewrite/remake of Ink Clouds.
Chapter 2: Assignment
In only three months, the unidentified creature of the Central Ocean completely poisoned the water. Though flora and fauna both prospered as if nothing changed, anyone who dared to consume either fell ill with a never before seen disease. Cases began in Lower Junon, assumed and dismissed to be some kind of odd food poisoning or new flu going around by Shinra’s marketing department. The citizens assumed the mako reactor was at fault. They were both wrong. They only realized how wrong they were when the water began to darken, and eventually, from shore to the horizon, the entire ocean from Junon to Costa del Sol converted from beautiful blue to pitch black.
What in all the gods was happening?
The black ‘pollution’ levels rose in small plankton, and all fish in any darkened water became inedible with high risk of this new disease. Symptoms ranged from simple to unexplainable: extreme fatigue, black blemishes on skin, black puss, migraines, 101°F fevers, low motor control, and, in most cases, death within a month of infection. Anyone with undeniable symptoms were required to enter the nearest medical facility owned by the Shinra Electric Company. Many seaside businesses suffered, but it was the only choice they had for survival. Shinra even signed a ceasefire with Wutai to prevent any issues with public relations, under the threat of questioning why they continued a war while abandoning its cities. Soon, scientists in Cosmo Canyon confirmed the extreme disease had both a connection to the Lifestream and something completely unseen on this planet. Because of its original proximity to Junon’s Mako reactor and their knowledge of mako's connection to the planet itself, they named the virus Geostigma.
Shinra prohibited all use of oceanic gear and vessels for both personal and professional use until SOLDIER handled the situation. It only took a month after research and recon began for the source of this outbreak to make itself known. The creature had attacked a submarine near the underwater reactor. No one knew why, but it finally gave the program a target. Even if this creature was one of many, a single capture made the chance of a cure skyrocket.
The plan was simple: send out a fleet, throw down chains to guide the creature to the ship of First Class SOLDIERS, and the Firsts capture the creature with the steel-linked nets. The creature tore through ropes easily, but metal seemed to at least slow it down. However, its behavior was still unpredictable, and no one truly knew what they were searching for.
On the ship of SOLDIERs, and a few cadets for additional hands on deck, a young black haired man groaned, his arms extending in a bored yawn. “Why did they need to send Firsts on this squid hunt?” He complained. “At minimum, the Thirds could handle this.”
A bearded man shook his head at the boy’s impatience. “It’s not as simple as ‘who can physically handle this’.” He tugged softly on the lowered net, confirming yet again the force against it was too weak, still nothing of value entering its grasp.
“And you’re not a First, Zack,” a man in crimson mocked, glancing up from his book. “So no complaining.”
Zack groaned. “I just want some action. We’re just grasping at straws here.”
“I heard the Turks are responsible for keeping the creature in this area. If anything, this is fish in a barrel if you’re patient enough.”
“Yeah, cause you’re the King of Patience, Genesis,” The boy muttered under his breath, instantly earning a glare from both First Classes.
“Okay, both of you, stop.” The bearded one interrupted, raising the net. “We’re all getting impatient. But this mission is a chance to help the world.”
That small possibility plucked at Zack’s heartstrings, at his dream, and an excited wave of determination flowed through him. “A chance to be a hero…” He didn’t realize he echoed that outloud. Still, he only earned a nod in response.
“Exactly. It’s a start. Now come on.”
Zack immediately went to his side, both of them pulling up the net scattered with large fish. “Thanks, Angeal.” He unhooked the chains before calling to a few cadets. “Alright guys, you know what to do!”
“Yes, sir!” Two of the cadets on board immediately ran and collected the struggling fish in metal buckets.
“Zack, be a dear and check the fish tanks. And be sure the creature tank is empty,” Genesis gave a simple order. They both knew what happened last time.
The boy gave him a small dirty look before helping the cadets.
Once out of earshot, the redheaded First turned to the dark haired one. “My, my. I'm surprised you had it in you, Angeal.”
“What are you talking about?” Angeal readjusted the links into place.
“Using the puppy's hero schtick against him. I'm impressed.”
He scoffed. “I'm not using it against him. He has heart. Sometimes he just needs reminding of that.”
“Of course.” Genesis rolled his eyes playfully. “Whatever you say.” A simple look from the dark haired man told him he'd be receiving a lecture once the little apprentice was no longer popping in and out. In the meantime, his friend fixed the net and tossed it back into the black water.
A minute later, the boy returned with an annoyed tone. “Creature’s tank is still empty, but there are some big fish in the waste tank. I’m not sure how much more we can squeeze before we have to start dumping again.”
Genesis let out a soft grunt. “Then all we can do is hope the next drop baits this creature.”
Zack groaned loudly. “We've done that ten times! Why don't we just go down there and fight it?”
“Oh? Do you know where it is?”
“Well… no…” He backed off for a moment before perking up. “But if we bait it the surface-”
“The creature doesn’t come to the surface, and we cannot locate it through the water without sonar.”
“Then what about using magic?”
“Yours? Through salt water? The spell will diffuse too quickly. And for the love of the Goddess, do not use lighting magic to reach farther.”
An attempt at a hidden chuckle caught both of their attention. “Genesis, are you sure you don't want Zack as an apprentice?”
“Do not pass your ill-informed child onto me,” he jokingly countered.
“It was just an idea! If we can get it close to the surface, it could work!”
It took all Genesis's willpower to not roll his eyes. “If my spells won't reach far enough, we are not attempting that.”
Zack grumbled and crossed his arms, looking away like a pouting child. “You know who could make that work? Sephiroth...”
Genesis glared, but Angeal gave him a quick cut throat gesture and took over.
“Zack, it’s extremely unprofessional to offer other soldiers on your mission.”
“But where is he anyway? This was supposed to be an 'all Firsts get it done' mission. Why isn’t he here?”
“Have you ever dealt with Professor Hojo?” Genesis interrupted again.
Zack visibly cringed, a memory of an 'experiment' in a training simulation that almost got him killed and a small mumble of ‘your body will be more useful than you’. Thank gods Angeal came in and stopped him when he did. “Yeah. Why?”
“Sephiroth had a medical appointment with him yesterday.”
Oh.
Oh…
“Oh… That sucks…”
“It does indeed 'suck'.”
Zack just nodded softly in agreement when suddenly the chains of the net crashed and collided against the boat. Zack and Angeal instantly locked eyes and grabbed the net. Genesis stood on standby with magic at the ready.
They just caught something big.
Both master and apprentice pulled and reeled as fast as possible to prevent any attempt of the captured monster escaping. There was no doubt in their minds it was a monster. If they were lucky, it was the monster they were looking for. The high tinks of clattering metal links grew and grew as they collected in a haphazard pile until finally the woven net broke the surface and reached their hands.
What the hell did they just dredge up?
It fought and thrashed against the net, purple expanding and curling to hook and tear the metal apart. It pushed and clawed against the trap with human hands. It had a tiny fish in its mouth, which might be the only reason it wasn’t biting through the net with shark-like teeth.
It looked like a fairytale creature. The bottom half of its body was squid-like of smooth purple tentacles. The top half was human, blonde, and could almost be mistaken for a normal man if it wasn't for mako blue eyes and shark sharp teeth.
When It landed on the deck, both SOLDIERs realized It was already sliding out of the net, Its tentacles slithering Its human-like torso free from the trap. They immediately pinned It down, Zack forcing its soldiers to the ground and staring It in the eyes in challenge while Angeal unsheathed the Buster Sword and weighed down the tentacles at Its base.
But no one was fast enough. Not Zack’s reflexes. Not Genesis' magic. Not Angeal’s reaction speed. The ink of Geostigma shot out of the creature, striking the center of Angeal’s chest and splattering over his arms and his face. Genesis’ barrier spell hit half a second too late, only pushing the tentacles into a cluttered heap of purple ropes slightly arched around the marked First.
For a moment, everyone froze. Everyone on the ship knew that Angeal’s fate was all but sealed to the disease plaguing the planet. Through the shock, even the creature seemed to freeze, but really It was staring into the mako blue eyes of the young SOLDIER.
“Za…?” It barely sounded like a breath, a whisper, a soft groan before it winced.
The boy kept his eyes locked on the creature, but the concern on his face for Angeal’s condition showed clear as day.
“Stay calm,” The first words any of them spoke, and they were Angeal’s. “Our mission hasn’t changed. We get the creature in the tank. We take it to Midgar. And they make the cure.”
Zack took a shaky breath and nodded. “Just like antidotes...” He explained aloud to calm himself down.
“Genesis, drop the barrier,” Angeal commanded simply and ignored the shocked anger on his friend’s face. “Let me carry it into the tank. Then we can worry about this.”
It took a few seconds before a hesitant counterspell broke the barrier, and Angeal found himself within the web of tentacles once more.
“Zack, are you ready?”
He nodded, and they both began lifting the creature.
But It panicked. All of a sudden, the fear in Its eyes grew and It thrashed against them both, the net useless as Its tentacles tried constricting Angeal like a snake, wrapping around his arms and legs. In the same motion, It grabbed Zack’s hand and immediately sank Its teeth into it, and blood dripped from the wound.
Zack didn’t wince at the sharp pain, but he needed to do something fast. It was already opening its mouth for another bite. Bite. You know, you shouldn’t bite off more than you can chew, his mother’s voice chided him in a memory, but it was exactly what he needed. He balled his hand to a fist and forced it between Its jaws.
The creature couldn’t chew or rip or tear. Its teeth were stuck exactly where they landed in the boy’s hand. It winced as it tried to tear through the blockage his fist became, both of Its hands on top of the bloodied one. It even dropped Its grip on the mentor as its entire focus shifted to the thing in Its mouth. It looked pained, wincing and cringing as it desperately tried to nibble Zack’s hand for a single shred of progress.
Then It… whined? The sound was so unexpected, none of them believed it until It squeezed Its eyes closed and repeated the pathetic sound. It looked ready to cry, all of Its resistance gone to attempt to make just a little progress.
Angeal was the first to recognize what It needed and snapped his gaze to the two closest cadets. “Get some fish from the tanks. Now.”
With that sharp a tone from Angeal of all the Firsts, the two stumbled over each other as they rushed below deck to fulfill the request.
“Zack, are you okay?”
He nodded quickly. “Oh yeah. I’m fine. It does kinda hurt though.” With the amount of blood flowing from the wound, that was understandable.
“Can you still lift it?” Even without resistance, carrying this creature from Its tentacled side would be difficult. But Angeal would also act as a shield in case It inked like that again. But another nod calmed his nerves.
“Yeah, I got it. It’s just my off hand.”
Well. Small victories. Without another word, they adjusted and lifted the creature again, this time with no resistance as It whined softly against the closed fist. Once they were down below deck, It noticed the nearly overflowing tank of fish and let Zack’s hand. It reached for the cadets struggling to grab a single fish from the storage tank into their buckets. It no longer made a sound. Even Its tentacles seemed to extend as they expertly dipped into the containers, coiled around the small captured fish and brought each one to Its hands. Surprisingly, It looked up to Zack with an almost puppy like beg, Its teeth finally yet slowly leaving his skin, or at least as much as It could.
Zack took a breath before delicately releasing the fist and maneuvering his hand out of Its jaws carefully, yet It seemed to help, carefully adjusting and allowing Zack a safe exit.
Once It confirmed the limb was gone, It shoved the fish in Its mouth and literally tore it apart, the bloody mess polished to pure white bone before It shoved in the next, repeating the process. It seemed completely distracted with the meal; that gave the First and apprentice the opportunity to lift It into the tank. It didn't even notice until It ran out of fish, seemingly uninhibited by the small puffs of black clouds growing around It from Its slow but steady stream of ink. The creature’s tank was glass, and It could see them clearly. But the ‘waste tank’ of fish was metal and impossible to see through.
Zack glanced back at Angeal and the path they took. Sure enough, a thin line of ink mapped their entire way as if someone followed them with an upside down bottle of deadly syrup. Neither Zack nor the poor cadets that would soon be forced to clean it up noticed the creature reach out of the tank with a single tentacle before it was too late.
It pulled Zack's arm up as high and as close as Zack could get, Angeal grabbing the Buster Sword and a mere second away from attacking when it put Zack's hand in its mouth and bit lightly, sharp teeth barely grazing the boy's skin. It didn't even try to leave the tank, though it was clearly capable of doing so. It just kept Its head above the water.
Zack watched in amazement while Angeal returned the blade to its magnetic sheath. He cleared his throat to calm his heart and actually laughed at the situation. “Guys, I think It’s still hungry.”
The cadets nodded and once again scooped some fish into the small buckets. This time they literally offered the buckets to the creature, and once again it grabbed each fish with its tentacles and consumed them perfectly.
Though they didn't understand why it was so hungry, they did build a plan around it. The cadets would bleach every trace of the ink off the deck. Angeal would quarantine himself in the only bathroom to prevent anyone else from catching the disease and attempt to clean off as much of the ink as possible. Zack stayed by the creature to feed It whenever It desired, still signaled by a bite to his hand. It stayed calm when fed and with Zack present. While everything happened, Genesis called HeadQuarters and requested their fastest vessel, informing them that they captured the creature. Then Genesis told the group that he would stay by Angeal's side at the nearest medical facility while Zack transported the creature, making a final snide comment about not losing the It on the way.
* * *
Soon, at the highest point of Junon, Zack and the creature were on a helicopter to Midgar. Though Zack insisted the creature wasn’t hostile when fed, all personnel insisted the creature remain in the portable tank, especially since the helicopter did not have nearly enough storage to feed It. Realistically the portable tank was a glass coffin half filled with water, so everyone was surprised when Zack pointed to it and the creature immediately slithered in, even before the boy got the chance to give a command.
Zack kept the headphones they gave him on his head as he watched the creature as far from the pilot's seat as possible. Not once did it create a soft or even just relaxed expression. Not once in the hours they captured It did It sleep.
Its eyes never remained on anything except its next meal and Zack. When it wasn't eating or hungry, Its eyes flicked constantly from various details of its surroundings, the aircraft to the blue sky out the window in this case, focusing no more than half a second on each thing that captured Its eyes. It constantly looked worried, afraid, snapping Its attention to anything and everything.
Zack watched curiously, trying to find a pattern in Its random scanning. The creature certainly had some intelligence. Hell, It practically trained Zack when to feed It. He wanted to know why. It didn't seem cruel. Feral, yes, but once It ate It completely switched demeanor. It seemed like a kitten in those brief moments. Here, It just looked afraid.
The SOLDIER took a breath before testing a simple theory. “Hey, do you understand me?” The chopping of the propeller, that had been rapidly slashing for at least ten minutes,  made him cringe a bit at his lack of planning. It probably couldn't hear him over all the noise in the craft.
However, It locked eyes with him for a solid second, maybe two, before Its possessed scanning continued.
It heard him. It understood him. It must be smart enough, right? Most monsters didn’t react to human languages unless they were fleeing or probed to attack.
Zack took a hard look at the creature before asking kindly, “You do?”
It looked at him again for the same length of time before repeating its cycle of scanning.
What would be the simplest question to ask It? …well, Zack only thought of one thing. “Do you have a name?”
It glanced from Zack to the window. Zack to the window, and in less than a second Zack's eyes follow.
But all he saw was the empty cerulean blue of the clear sky.
He nodded. “I'll call you 'Sky' then. Does that work?”
It didn't react.
“Can you speak, Sky?”
It didn't respond.
“Where did you come from?”
No response.
“Why won't you stop inking, Sky?” Even Zack knew, watching as the water it floated in, nearly opaque from the ink during the flight alone, that this ink was a defense from something.
But nothing happened, and Zack only sighed before looking out the window again, watching the land as they traveled to their destination.

Thanks for reading!
Author's note: Now we start to pick up the pace! We're about half way into chapter 2 of the original now. You don't need to read it to understand this, but I am curious if anyone picked up on the things that changed. I'm certainly having a lot of fun with this- all these new takes on my old idea. I promise Sephiroth will be in the next chapter! And that's when this truly takes off…

original prompt: where joon hwi and the rest of the gang shake some sense into her (sol a) about her self-esteem.
words: 2787 words
Sol is downstairs at the lounge, holding a clear bottle of soju. She takes another swig from the plastic bottle, hoping that the alcohol can numb her heart like it does to her head. It burns, and she’s turning woozy, but she grumbles and takes another swig.
2.02. She’s passed, at least. But she can’t help but feel upset. She wasn’t upset that she couldn’t score as well as Yeseul or BokGi, but upset that she’s satisfied with these low results. No one is going to hire her, even less offer an internship while looking at her track records.
Sol worked her ass off for this exam. She nearly died, if it wasn’t for Yeseul’s reminders to eat. Even her cold stoned face roommate bothered to place bottles of water on her desk. Yet, after all this...
“Why are you still up?” She hears Joon Hwi ask as he takes a seat next to her. She stays silent with a grim expression and turns away. Joon Hwi was the last person she wanted to see, especially when she’s in such a bad mod.
“What’s wrong?” He asks as he catches her arm just as she’s about to chug her soju.
“Everything.” She slurs. “You know I’m not even upset with my GPA? I’m upset of being happy with my shitty grades.” Joon Hwi sighs, attempting to grab her bottle away.
“I should have never came to study. I should have never tried to prove myself to be Dan!” She scolds louder. Sol knows she’s drunk in front of her best friend, but she can’t control herself. She doesn’t care.
“Kang Sol...” Joon Hwi stands up, grabbing her bottle away from her. “You’re drunk. Go back.”
“I don’t belong here, anyway.” Her slurs catch Joon Hwi in his steps.
“I never once belonged with any of you. Being with all of you just drags you all further. I should just stop burdening you all with my questions and rot in a corner. Besides, no one would care.” She softly says, her voice filled with regret and guilt.
Sol has always felt this way. Ever since she was young, Dan was always the star child. She got top grades while Sol got through in the middle rankings. Dan was always more popular, prettier, smarter. Sol learnt at a young age that no matter what, she would always be overshadowed by Dan.
Thus, she learnt to be quiet. Only ask questions when she really needs to. Stick to familiar people. Only be loud when told to, and blend in in every situation. She learnt to depreciate herself, because no one appreciated her in the first place.
Joon Hwi wants to shake her. He wants to write an entire dissertation on why Sol belongs to Hankuk. He wants to show her what he sees: a smart, caring, passionate lawyer-to-be. He wants to show her what he sees when she testified for Professor Yang in court. A confident, woman knowing her morals and rights.
“Kang Sol.” Joon Hwi says, pulling her up by her wrist. Sol pushes him away, but her touches are sloppy and weak. Sighing, Joon Hwi knows that it is useless to argue about her grades and her worth when she’s not even half conscious of what she’s doing.
He grabs her coat lying on the couch, finding her phone and plans on calling Yeseul. But it’s past 1am, but he doesn’t want to trouble Yeseul. Sighing, he contemplates calling her roomie but reality smacks when he realises she’s home. Noticing how Sol is slowly nodding off, giving in to the fatigue, it leaves Joon Hwi not much of an option to carry her back.
Fishing the room key out from her coat, he takes special care in carrying her, sweeping his arm under her knee and lifting her slowly as to not disrupt her from falling asleep. The key card is in between his fingers as he slowly and quietly makes his way up to her dorm. He thanks the deities above that no one caught him or interrupted him.
Tapping the key card, a standard ‘beep’, he pushes the door with his back, and takes care to get him and her into the dark room. He can barely see anything, especially since he has no hands to on the lights, but he makes out his way in the small room using the moonlight and what he can tell.
Joon Hwi knows which side Sol sleeps, knowing from her stories that include her rolling from the bed up to the desk. By now, Sol was sleeping soundly, a slight snore escaping her. Gently, he sets her down on her bed and reaches to take her shoes off for her. Hanging up her coat that he placed on top of her whilst he was carrying her, he finally pulled the thick blanket over her.
But he didn’t leave just yet.
“I never once belonged with any of you.”
Sol’s words echoed in his head more than he thought it would. He stopped and bent down silently by her bed side, taking a few moments to wonder to himself just how and why does she feel so unworthy.
He grabs her bottle of water from her bag, before putting it next to her phone, which is on the table. Knelt on the floor, he observes the slow rise of her chest and the way her eyes flutter and nose twitch when Sol sleeps. Just how can someone like Sol think she’s any less than what he sees?
“You belong here in Hankuk. I’ll show you just why.” His whisper barely audible, as he brushes away a stray hair on her face. With that, he takes his leave and sneaks back to his dorm. (Without getting caught)
-----
The next day, after two painkillers and a big bowl of hangover soup (left mysteriously by someone at their pantry), Sol is headed to study group. She is running a few minutes early than their scheduled timing, but she’s surprised to find the group huddled in hushed whispers.
“What are you all looking at?” Sol asks, as she sets her book at her usual corner opposite Joon Hwi. BokGi lets out a startled yelp and Yebeom clamps his mouth shut. Sol isn’t surprised to see Jiho crowded there, but is even more shocked to see Sol B crowded with them too. If it was anything, Sol B wouldn’t crowd around and discuss things, unless it concerned herself, or benefitted her grades.
“What...” Sol leans over and raises her eyebrows. Yeseul’s eyes dart nervously and she breaks into a smile. The rest of the group just shuffles back to their seats murmuring under their breath.
“Nothing, unnie! They were just discussing on what to order for lunch.” Yeseul says as she walks over to Sol and takes her bag and books from her, before setting it on the table. “Unnie, shall we get coffees?” Yeseul escorts her out of the room before Sol could react. Sol assumes that it’s due to her hangover that Yeseul is suggesting coffee, thus just following and getting a cold brew and assorted drinks for the others.
When she returns, they distribute the drinks and start discussing on what to study.
“Noona, do you have anything?” BokGi asks, a little too enthusiastically. Sol is taken aback and lost for words. She usually just follows whatever the rest want, since answering her questions will take hours. Joon Hwi gives a sympathetic smile.
“How about you share with us about a recent case? Remember the one that Professor Kim liked in particular?” Joon Hwi suggests. Sol grows quiet. Her? The worst student? Sol let’s out an uncertain laugh.
“Ah, me? I rather my roomie shares. She did better than me.” Sol says, then prepares a fresh document for note taking on her laptop.
“I didn’t do well.” Sol B says quietly, her eyes emotionless as usual, leaning back into the chair. “You did the best. Go on.” Sol is stunned and just nods uncertainly. Taking out her case notes and her reports that she submitted, she nervously discusses the topic on hand. She sneaks Joon Hwi a couple of questioning stares but he only pretends to not catch her eyes.
Everyone is enthusiastic, asking questions and when Sol is stumped, they jump in to help her. They suggest ideas and Sol has never felt so energised by their energy before. She find it fishy how Joon Hwi just sits back and she can feel him smiling whenever she makes a point right or figures out a missing link.
An hour later, when they are done expanding on Sol’s case and discussing, they break for a late lunch together.  Yebeom enters the room with bags of food, as usual over ordering. As they pass out containers of jjampong and jjajamyeon, Sol’s eyes light up when she saw the only thing that mattered in the whole order: her beloved pickles, in doubled servings.
What Sol doesn’t expect is for JiHo to dump his packet of pickles on her container of noodles.
“JiHo-ah, why...” Sol is dumbfounded for a moment as JiHo opens his pack of noodles to stir. JiHo only pushes up his glasses.
“You can have them, noona.” Sol is even more dumbfounded. This was the first time JiHo has called her noona. She didn’t care for the honourifics, and JiHo could call her by her full name for all she cared. But hearing those words from Seo JiHo’s mouth, just made her think everyone was utterly suspicious today.
“Okay, everyone is being weird. What is this?” Sol announces, hoping her tone came out fun, with no hints of anger.
“Nothing! We just know you’ve been feeling stressed, so JiHo decided to give you his share of pickles, right?” BokGi quips up, as he dives into taking the sauce to pour over the tangsuyuk, before Yebeom and him argue over pouring or dipping.
Sol, still feeling suspicious, breaks her chopsticks just as Joon Hwi picks up a pickle from her plastic saucer to put on her noodles. Her eyes dart from his chopstick to his face, but he just nods at her pickles, expressions hard to read.
Sol crunches on her pickles, but it does nothing to soothe the feeling that everyone was aware of something, but her.
-----
The rest of the week was a puzzle piece that Sol could not fix together.
She woke up everyday to a new message by Joon Hwi, sometimes sending her funny videos, or a simple “let’s get through this together”. She woke up once to her roomie handing her breakfast and coffee. It just didn’t click in Sol’s head to see the cold Sol B hand her a sandwich and coffee.
Their group chat was undoubtedly noisy, but even more so now. Something in common was how the more chatty ones would ask Sol for advice or chat and strike noisy conversations. She was used to the chaos, but she definitely didn’t feel used to having the attention on her.
As the group had earned different internships from small and large firms, Sol was going to be left in school alone, still applying and hoping for one to come her way. Her study group knew about it, and instead continued to encourage her about it. They avoided talk on their internships, and actively tried to help Sol. While Sol was grateful, she couldn’t help but wish that they would just act normal and not worry about her.
She chose to meet them for breakfast on the day of their internships. The meal was noisy as usual as they ate their sandwiches and gimbaps. They were dressed smartly in their suits with their briefcases. Sol made a fuss over everyone looking smart on their first day.
“Hurry up and eat, you’re going to be late for your internship!” Sol scolded BokGi as he and Yebeom threw comments back and forth. Everyone was off for theirs and ready with their jackets and bags. Walking with them to the door, she couldn’t help but feel like a mom to her kids, sending them to school.
“Noona! Check your table later in the libra-” Yebeom gleefully mused before BokGi clamped his mouth shut and JiHo (with much irritation) smacked his head silently.
“What?” Sol asks, turning to Joon Hwi, who was turning redder by the second. Joon Hwi closes his eyes, the same way he does when he’s embarrassed and looks away from her.
“Listen to Yebeom and check the table.” He says, finally looking at her. “We’ll see you for dinner then.” Waving a quick goodbye, the group walked away from her towards the carpark where they separated to the bus stops or in the direction of the train station.
“O-Okay…” she mutters, still confused as she carries her books and bag to her usual table at the library. She would have went to sulk at Professor Kim’s office for a while, but she instead chose to head straight to study. Professor Kim had enough on her plate and she wasn’t ready just yet to face Professor Kim with her mood.
There, at her table, lies her stack of books.
Normal, nothing out of the ordinary. Huffing out, she slumps her bag on her table, gathering the post its on the bar above the table. Most of them were just plain comments, like how she had to stop slamming her pen into her hand (it distracted students) or move out of the library cause there aren't enough seats. Opening her book on civil code, she was ready to start drilling her head before meeting Professor Kim.
Then she spots an envelope, hidden between the pages of the book.
Carefully, she picks it out and looks on the cream white paper, the only ink on it her name, written in neat handwriting. She could recognise Joon Hwi’s handwriting anywhere. A slight scoff escapes her lips and several students turn in annoyance. Realising that this was probably not the best place to be in, she grabs her books and bags (and the post its) and leaves the library. She heads to the empty study room, where she knows she’s be comfortable at.
Opening the flap, she slips out numerous slips of paper, varying degrees of length and sizes. Some words were neat, some were a little messy.

Yah, noona! You have to stop injuring yourself, okay? You gave us a really big scare the last time when you started nose bleeding in the midst of study group. Noona, don’t look at your grades anymore! If a man like me can get through law school so far pretty well, you can too! Fighting, noona!
Noona~ you’re really talented. The fact that you scored so well during the criminal law test and managed to spot the comma just shows for amazing you are! Noona, don’t be discouraged... seeing you discouraged makes us sad too. Your favourite dongsaeng is here to help you!
- BokGi and Yebeom
To: Kang Sol-A
You can do it. Review your cases before classes. Get your internship.
-JiHo
To: Sol-A
Live up to your name, will you? And sleep on a regular schedule.
- Roommate
To: Sol
Sunbae, remember me? Stop doubting yourself and trust yourself. You’re smarter than you know and fit for court. I will support you from wherever you are. I’m grateful for you, for supporting me all this time. I think Dan would be proud of you, and so will the cookie Byeol.
Sol, you are worthy in my eyes. So stop undermining yourself. You belong in Hankuk next to me. You can’t give up now.
-Joon Hwi
-----
Sol lets a smile creep on her face as she lets a small blush rise to her face. Holding her letters to her heart, she closes her eyes, reminding herself of the past week and her friend’s efforts to cheer her on. She knew no doubt it had to be Joon Hwi who convinced everyone there to write for her despite their busy schedule. For even Sol B to help out and bother about her, it warmed her heart to have her support.
Picking her book, she pinned her hair up as she started drill into her book with a new found confidence, fuelled by her friends supporting her. But most importantly, she felt worthy. She felt loved. She felt confident. She was hopeful.
(Everyone thinks she’s worthy in their eyes, but one just thinks she’s perfect.)

As Kuroo entered Kenna’s house he yelled out to him but there was no response. He look around to see everything in place as if nothing has been touched in a while. He walked to the kitchen to place down the take out food he brought to eat with him. He finally went to Kenma’s room to find him mopping in the same clothes he last saw him with. He went to open the curtain to let some light enter the room. Kenma groaned at the bright sun entering the dark room which hasn’t had any light.
“Well you really look like you’re going through a bad breakup.” Kuroo trying to lighting his mood, which failed miserable. Kenma turned to the other side to ignore the bed hair guy.
“Okay i’m sorry that wasn’t funny”. Kuroo awkwardly laugh. “Kenma have you eaten anything? I brought food so let’s go eat.”
“Im not hungry.” He finally replied. “Well from the look of it, you haven’t showered much or less eat.”
“I’m too tired right now Kuroo, i don’t feel like doing anything so go away.” He said quietly. “Kenma get up and shower please or else i’m going to carry you there.” Kenma slowly sat up looking at Kuroo in disgust. “Don’t you even dare carry me, I’ll go shower then” Kuroo pouted “Fine then and when you’re done showering come to the kitchen so we can eat together.” Kenma hummed in response.
Once Kenma finished his shower he headed to the kitchen. He sat down across from Kuroo looking unmotivated to do anything. Kenma’s eyes were puffy and had dark circles under them. The bed haired guy was worried about his health but he started serving Kenma a plate so he could at least have something in his stomach.
He placed a plate in front of him. Kenma looked at the food unwilling to eat but there was a loud growl coming from Kuroo’s stomach. Kenma’s eyes widened and let out a small laugh. As he started eating a small smile was formed.
“Soo how are you feeling?” Kuroo asked awkwardly. “Well as you can telling i’m living my best life, i’m very happy. Definitely not been laying on my bed for the past days” He replied sarcastically.
“Kenma you idiot just tell her you like her.” Kuroo said calmly, getting up from his seat walking to the sink. “I couldn’t even do that when someone wasn’t in the picture but now there’s this tall, muscular, nice hair, probably an athlete guy in the picture, i definitely can’t tell her now. I’ll probably have zero chances.” Kenma said as he mopped. Kuroo let out a big sigh as he left to a room. After a few minutes knocks were heard from the front door. Kuroo quickly open it.
HInata rushed in. “Kenma!” He yelled out and went over to him. “I heard everything from Kuroo in my opinion, I don't think Y/n is a type of person to lead someone on. When we all went out together that one time she looked liked she was having a great time with you.” He paused and sighed. “I’m going to say this once and one time only. If you dont even try to fight against that mysterious guy then i don’t think you don’t deserve Y/n so you should let her go for someone better.” Hinata said with a stern look. All eyes were all on him. Both guys eyes widened by what the orange haired said.
“Hinata i dont think that’s very encouraging right now.” Kuroo said worriedly. “This is what he needs to hear right now even if it’s the painful truth.” Hinata added. “He’s right though. Maybe i probably never did deserve her.” “Ke-.” “I dont feel like i do deserve to be around or with her. If can’t fight for her now that someone is in the picture then what’s the point, maybe i should give up.”
Kenma got up and went back to his room to isolate himself again. Kuroo looked back at Hinata and shook his head at him. The orange head guy sighed not knowing if he pushed him in the wrong direction.

ao3
(A/N: so... i am extremely sorry for not updating,,, uni and life has been generally kicking my ass pretty horribly (im in my final semester lol) and while i am not generally very happy with this chapter, it is important because it sets up a lot of things in the future yeeet)
word count: 4955
Attorney Park wishes her good luck as she leaves for the courthouse the next day, and Sol can’t help but feel as though he was laughing at her for some reason, and frantically checks for food stuck in her teeth on the way to the courthouse. There isn’t any, so she’s left to wonder exactly what the hell he meant when he had sent her off with a very cryptic “see you soon, Kang Sol.”
“What did he even mean?” she mutters to herself, calling her sister, “Ah, Byeol, remember to go to your academy today, all right?”
“Okay, eonni,” her sister replies, “you’re at the courthouse, aren’t you?”
“Hmm, I have a case to win,” she replies, and Byeol wishes her good luck before the call goes silent, and she allows herself a rare moment of self-reflection, taking in the image of the Courthouse. It’s imposing, but she curiously feels at home here, in the middle of the city where the noise of the cars is so loud, she can’t hear the person next to her sometimes. There’s something magical about the courthouse, and she isn’t romanticising it, but the idea of fighting for justice, no matter how imperfect, it fills her with pride, even more so when she knows that what she is doing is for good.
Not to say that there aren’t any downsides to it, either. She gets threats almost on the daily, from disgruntled clients and from people who want her to take the case, even though she knows it would be an affront to her dignity. The Dean’s voice floats into her ear, reciting the Attorneys-at-act law that allows her to reject a case if she wants to. Right. It does not feel like an insult to her now like it had done then, the act, because she chose to take this case on, and yet, here she is, standing in front of the courthouse, wearing her nicest clothes (Yeseul had raised an eyebrow, but she was too tired to pay any attention to her) and dreading her turn to go inside.
“Eonni!” a voice calls out, and it’s Yeseul, dressed for a case, “how long do you have before you have to go in?” Sol doesn’t need to check her watch to tell the time that is left, ten minutes on the dot, and she’s waiting for her client to come through, still in police custody, something which she had failed to stop, “are you staring off into space again?”
She recovers quickly, “no, I was just waiting for the defendant to be brought here by the police.” She turns to Yeseul, who’s evidently not had much sleep, “why are you here in my case? Didn’t you wrap one up today?”
“Ah, I did,” Yeseul smiles, taking a hold of Sol’s arm, “but I’m here now, aren’t I? I thought you would need some support, you know, since you—”
She doesn’t complete the sentence. She doesn’t need to. Sol smiles at her, loops their arms together, and says, “do you want to have coffee?”
Yeseul grins, “I’d love to.”
No matter how many times she’s walked in here, and no matter how much the courthouse makes her feel at ease, there’s still a part of her that is anxious when she stands in front of it, hoping that she might be able to provide adequate justice to the person she was defending. It throws her off sometimes, the court of law. But she can always find her way back to it, and perhaps this is why she loves it, loves being able to defend people from being betrayed by the same system that they had put so much trust in, betrayed, just like she had been. It’s as though the law is apologising to her, albeit in its own, slightly twisted way.
The defendant, Je Sang-Hee, sits at her designated position, looking at her, and Sol draws herself up to her full height, careful to not catch anyone’s eye on the other side of the courthouse. Its oddly suffocating, the courthouse today, the air thick with a sort of anticipation that she doesn’t really want to address. Yeseul squeezes her arm, whispering, “you’ll do good, eonni,” and all of a sudden, she’s standing there, alone, with only her wits there for help. Shit. I wish I had had gotten drunk last night. At least this would have been hazier.
She approaches the bench, the defendant sitting silently, and tries to reassure her, “don’t worry, we’ll clear your name, all right?” she’s met with silence, as Sang-Hee only nods, her eyes welling with unshed tears. It’s heart-breaking, the way Sang-Hee has accepted her punishment, accepted that she would be going to prison anyway, so, nothing really matters. Sol doesn’t want that for her. She doesn’t want that for anyone, not even the worst of criminals. Sure, she may not be defending them in the court of law, but everyone should benefit from the assumption of innocence. She may not be the one speaking up for them, but she does wish that people have the opportunity to prove themselves innocent.
There aren’t many people in attendance in the courthouse today, which is a blessing, but she also has to deal with pesky reporters stationed outside, who seemed to have taken an interest in the woman accused of attempted murder, despite having really, no evidence against her. It was funny, how people jumped to conclusions, just because of the person’s backgrounds, or due to a particular defamatory article that may have been published about them online. Sang-Hee had had one published about her, filled with lies so vile that Sol couldn’t even read through it once.
“Sang-Hee ssi,” She says, approaching the defendant’s bench, “how are you feeling today?”
Je Sang-Hee looks at her, eyes still shining with tears, and lowers her gaze. She can’t even speak. Sol is angry, of course, but even more than the anger that simmers inside of her, is frustration, for not being able to protect her client, frustration at being unable to be the person there for the victim.
“Eonni,” Yeseul’s voice drags her out of her little reverie, “eonni, I think Joon-hwi oppa is here now.”
Sol squints at the younger girl, “who told you that?”
Yeseul holds up her phone, “Bok-gi is going to be here too, so he texted me. The two of them are going to come along, him and Jiho. Jiho should be here by now, but he hasn’t texted yet.”
Sol just—stares at Yeseul for a moment, trying to understand the volley of information that had just been thrown at her, in a manner not unlike that of Professor Yang, the man who, Sol recollects with regret, had heard about this whole mess from Sol B, but had not once offered to help. She didn’t need his help, though. It’s just that he could have offered to help her, and it would have been nice.
“Eonni,” Yeseul says, warning evident in her voice, “he’s here.”
What she doesn’t say, but Sol knows, is the sentence, don’t worry, I’m here for you. I’ll be here for you. She didn’t need it, per se, but it felt nice to know that at least one person had her back in this courthouse. Bok-gi was of course, on her side too, but she knew he wouldn’t sacrifice Joon-Hwi. Not now, anyway.
“You have your back to the Prosecutor’s bench,” Yeseul elbows her lightly, and she realises that yes, she has indeed been standing with her back towards the Prosecution’s bench all this while, and most importantly, there was someone behind her.
“Attorney Kang,” She knows that voice, has heard it in her head for years now, but Kang Sol finds herself unable to lift her gaze from the linoleum floor as she grasps the warm hand that was now being offered to her, “nice to meet you, finally.”
There’s a teasing lilt to the last word, a certain edge to the syllable that she knows all too well, having been subjected to it for hours on end, in classes, in the copy room, in the café, even in her mind. It’s from a voice she knows all too well, someone she had wronged.
Courage, Kang Sol.
“Hello, Prosecutor Han,” she looks up, extending one hand to the man in front of her, and—
She didn’t have any expectations of how she would meet Han Joon-Hwi after so many years, but in the deeper recesses of her mind, she had a thought; of his eyes widening at seeing her face for the first time in so many years, her falling in love with him all over again. She had thought of looking—no, not just looking, looking at him, for the first time in so many years, after that one fateful day when she ignored the words of her heat and went running far away from him, perhaps falling in love all over again.
Instead—she feels nothing. Perhaps a pang of guilt somewhere in the recesses of her mind, but when she looks into the eyes of Han Joon-Hwi, her best friend, the person she had fallen in love with, Kang Sol doesn’t see anyone but a weathered prosecutor, the boy who had called out her name on graduation day in Hankuk Law school long gone. Even though he looks not a day older, even though his eyes still crinkle in the same way when he smiles, and his hand still holds the same weight when he takes her hand for a handshake, but she can’t find the boy she was in love with anymore.
“Attorney Kang,” he grins, and his voice is the same, teasing when he looks at her, smiles at her, but he is her opponent, she has to defeat him today. This isn’t preparing for mock trials and judicial competitions, where they only played at being lawyers and prosecutors, this is real life. Je Sang-Hee’s life depends upon her, Kang Sol, winning this case. Against him, Han Joon-Hwi.
“Noona, nice to see you again,” Bok-gi pushes forward, giving her a warm hug, which does its job to dissipate all errant thoughts of a boy whose smile had haunted her in her dreams, “I’ll be watching today, my law firm asked me to—”
“Don’t worry about that,” she assures him, “you can take all the notes you want.” He’s still looking at her, she realises when she lets go of Bok-gi, Han Joon-Hwi is still staring at me. Do I have something in my teeth? “Good luck today, Prosecutor Han.”
He grins at her then, dimpled smile making her heart skip a beat, and says, “I don’t need luck, Attorney Kang,” before sauntering off to his seat.
Kang Sol clenches her jaw. Asshole.
--
He wasn’t sure how it would be—their meeting for the first time, but Joon isn’t going to say he’s dissatisfied with it. sure, she’s grown up now—she isn’t Kang Sol A anymore, she goes by just Kang Sol, and he doesn’t have the pesky tag of second-round judicial passer hanging around his neck anymore.
She had stared him down, and to no surprise, he still found her beautiful. Sure, he had always thought that there was a sort of magnetic aura around Sol, something that commanded the attention of an entire room when she walked in. She looked the same as she had looked, five years ago, when he had tried to confess to her, and she had rejected him. Sol hadn’t told him that she was rejecting him, at least not explicitly; Han Joon-Hwi was a man who could take a hint, especially if it ran away from him while he was in the middle of his confession. Really, Kang Sol. You made me chase you all the way to this courtroom.
A hand slams down on his desk, and Seo Jiho’s irritated voice tells him, “If you’re going to stare, at least do it properly.”
He sputters, suddenly thankful that his co-prosecutor was running late, as he stood up to stare at his ex-roommate, who was porting a very uncharacteristic grin, “what do you mean by that? I wasn’t staring.”
“Sure, you weren’t,” Jiho says, and even Bok-gi sniggers at him, “you were just looking in the general direction of Sol noona, so much so that everyone in the room thinks that the two of you are either dating, or that you want to kill her. Personally, I prefer the latter.”
He doesn’t say anything, just grumbles under his breath, and Jiho presses on, “did you prepare well for this case? You do realise that your evidence is weak, do you?”
“Ah, of course, hyung knows it,” Bok-gi steps in to intervene, and Joon-Hwi thinks for a moment that yes, Bok-gi was always one of the better ones, and then he opens his mouth again, “he’s just ignoring all the things he said before entering the courthouse, and proving to all of us how much of a hypocrite he is.”
Joon glares at Bok-gi, who is giggling at him now, and turns to look at the judge’s bench a pout on his face. Sure, he had proclaimed in the car that he would “not be looking at her, nope”, and the fact that it had taken him exactly three minutes to break that promise was bit laughable, but his friends didn’t have to rub it into his face.
“I don’t understand,” Bok-gi asks, “why are you still hung up on her? You basically took this case just so you could meet her again, and even though the two of you haven’t talked in years, you still talk about her, you still ask about her when you get the chance, so what is going on?”
Joon-Hwi doesn’t answer. He knows what is going on, why he has been so intent on meeting Kang Sol, even after so long, but he doesn’t want to—no, he can’t tell Bok-gi that. He feels a pang of guilt whenever he even thinks of telling Bok-gi the actual reason behind him running after Sol, even though she had made it abundantly clear that she didn’t want to have anything to do with him.
He wonders, sometimes.
His co-prosecutor arrives in the courtroom, almost gliding over the floor to take their seat, and he can see Kang Sol shrink back a little, obviously intimidated. He doesn’t hide his smile anymore, not that he needs to either. She didn’t have to get flustered over his co-prosecutor entering the damn courtroom. She’s never done that, at least from what Bok-gi and Yebeom have told him; even Jiho had pitched in with his own comments sometimes, knowing exactly how much it pissed him off, but he still did it. Every time he met Bok-gi or he met Yeseul, he would ask about her, waiting for them to respond with “oh, she’s doing okay, oppa” and “I met her a few weeks ago, she was fine, hyung” and they move on after that, but he can’t.
They don’t possibly expect him to move on from her, do they?
“All rise,” the bailiff announces, and he dutifully stands up, watching out of the corner of his eye as Sol gently helps the defendant to rise up alongside her, before being seated again. She still did that little thing when she looked around the entire courtroom for people watching her, he thinks to herself. She’s still the same Sol. No, she’s different now. We both are. We both are different, but there’s still things about her that remind me of the times we spent in Hankuk.
“Prosecutor Han,” the judge tells him, and he stands up quickly to his feet, “begin.”
“Thank you, Your Honour,” He says, walking out to the defendant’s bench, “defendant Je Sang-Hee, you were indicted on charges of attempted murder, following an attack on your fiancé, Seo Changmin, on the fourteenth of November, two weeks prior to your indictment.”
“Yes, I was,” she begins, “but I didn’t do anything to—”
“I’ll be the one asking questions here,” he cuts her off with a dismissive wave of his hand, and out of the corner of his eye, he can see Sol draw an almost-imperceptible breath, shaking her head at him. She isn’t flustered. He’s very sure she isn’t flustered, because the two of them have been on opposite sides of each other, time and time again, “could you confirm that Seo Changmin suffered injuries because of you?”
She stares at him, defiant, and replies, “he did not suffer injuries because of me, I found him and I called the police, I’ve told you this.”
“Yes, you have,” Joon walks to the front of the witness’ bench, “but your whereabouts were also unknown that night, until that fateful moment when you actually found your fiancé, and proceeded to assault him. Is that right?”
She looks at him, scowling. He’s hit a nerve, apparently. They had been harping on that aspect for far too long than what was necessary, Joon had noticed when he had been preparing. He couldn’t go that way when he questioned her, because he knows Sol has prepared for it.
So, he changes his track of questioning, “Ms Sang-Hee, would I be wrong in assuming that Mr Changmin had visited you five times over the three days prior to the accident?”
She stares at him, “he is my fiancé. Or he was, before the accident happened. It wasn’t unusual for him to visit me multiple times in a single day.”
He stops, “and yet, when the police asked you about the reason of his visits, you chose to remain silent, evading the question—”
“Objection,” Sol says calmly, standing up from her seat, “the prosecution cannot ask leading questions.”
“Sustained,” the judge replies smoothly, even before Joon-Hwi has a chance to respond, “Prosecutor Han, you cannot possibly expect me to accept this in the courthouse.”
He nods his head, slightly irritated, now that she has taken his advantage away, “moving on, Ms. Sang-Hee, when you found Seo Changmin unconscious, why did you not call for an ambulance? You waited ten minutes to call an ambulance, which most people would argue, looks strange, does it not?”
She doesn’t back down an inch. Good. He hadn’t thought she would either. They didn’t have enough evidence to show that she was guilty, her indictment based primarily on circumstantial evidence that even the most punishment-happy of all judges would find difficulty agreeing with. But they had had her indicted, and now they were here, trying to get her a sentence that would be as heavy as possible. Sol had been right. He didn’t have to worry about the defendant, not as a prosecutor. He just had to punish people to the full extent of the law.
“I tried to wake him up multiple times, but he didn’t respond,” Sang-Hee responds, staring at the judge, “I didn’t think it was out of the ordinary, since he had always had a drinking problem, but when he didn’t respond to me calling his name in the morning, that was when I grew worried.”
She looks at him once, then back to her lawyer, Sol, who looked as though she wanted to strangle him. good. This means I’m winning, and turns back to him, “it was like him to come back drunk, so drunk that he could barely remember where he was, and his friends would drop him off at my house, with apologies, but he would repeat his behaviour. I wasn’t too worried when he didn’t respond to my calls at night, but by morning, he would usually be awake and demanding breakfast. That was when I started to get anxious.”
“Anxious? Not worried?” he asks, curiosity spiked by her peculiar choice of words, “were you anxious that he was actually dead? Or were you anxious that your—”
“he’s my fiancé, of course I would be anxious if he was not responding to my calls,” Sang-Hee stares at him, “you must not have dated a lot if you think I wouldn’t have been worried about my fiancé.”
A wave of laughter runs through the court, and he can feel the tips of his ears turn red. Even the judge cracks a smile, and he can see both Bok-gi and Jiho sniggering. They’re never going to let me live this one down, “so, you called the police then, who found your fiancé almost dead from a drug overdose.”
“Yes,” she looks at her hands, fingers intertwined, “they told me he had taken it about four hours before I called them.”
Ah, there it is. He knew it would come to this, he had known there was no way to win this case after all, even if he really did want to win. There were things he couldn’t do after all, despite being what they called a ‘star prosecutor’. “No more questions.”
The smile on Sol’s face is enough to tell him that he’s lost this case. Oddly enough, he doesn’t feel disappointed, even as his partner shoots dirty looks at him, a clear violation of courtroom conduct, but he can’t bring himself to care, fixated on the way she looks while cross-examinating the defendant, the way she turns to the judge and says “no more questions, your Honour.” It’s a far cry from the Sol he remembers at law school, the one who would have him act as prosecutor whenever she went up in a mock trial, even if he had been assigned the role of prosecutor, going up against her. She always asked him to help her practise, and like the fool that he was, he always helped her. Even now, as he stands there, watching her, it’s almost as though he is back at Hankuk; almost, but not quite.
“Court adjourned for the day, and will convene for the next trial on—” Joon can feel himself growing more and more antsy, as the judge announces the date for the next trial, and that Sang-Hee can be released from Judicial custody, especially since her health had been failing due to the stress of the trial and asthma, from which she had suffered since she was young.
He hurries out of the courthouse, only to be cornered by Jiho and Bok-gi at the entrance, Bok-gi with a large grin on his face and Jiho with his trademark expressionless look, although he knows both of them were going to tease him about this, possibly till he died and perhaps even then, they would find a way to sneak it into his eulogy.
Strangely, he didn’t mind it at all.
“Hyung, where are you going?” Bok-gi asks, even as Joon desperately tries to catch a glimpse of Sol through the now-closing courtroom doors, “shouldn’t you be preparing for the next date?”
He looks at Bok-gi for a second, eyes widening, “what are you talking about?”
Bok-Gi’s smile gets wider, if that’s possible, “really? What were you thinking about, hyung? I was talking about the next court date.”
Joon-Hwi huffs, “I was thinking about the same thing, Min Bok-Gi; now, if you will—”
Jiho opens his mouth to say something, but Joon barrels past the two of them, running down the stone steps and to the driveway, where his car was parked, and, presumably, Sol’s too. She’s walking faster now, and he has to run to keep up with her. Her ponytail bobs as she takes quick steps, in a hurry to get away from the courthouse complex. He doesn’t blame her at all.
“Sunbae!” he calls out, loud enough to catch the attention of quite a few people, “Sunbae!”
That catches her attention all right, and she stops in her tracks, turning to him, an irritated expression on her face. It doesn’t stay for long, however, fading just as quickly as it came, “so, you’re still sticking with that name, Han Joon-Hwi?”
He grins, “of course. It wouldn’t be me and you, if I didn’t call you Sunbae, Sunbae.”
She stares at him, with an expression he can’t quite place. “I thought we didn’t have that sort of a relationship anymore, Prosecutor Han.”
And, there it is. He can’t deny it and say that it doesn’t hurt to be treated by Sol this way, but he’s nothing if not tenacious, so he pushes on, “you did good today, in there.”
She doesn’t say anything, simply nods her head, before replying with a curt, “good job today, Prosecutor Han.” Of course, she would say that; he doesn’t want to admit it, but it sort of feels like she had slapped him full across the face. Who am I kidding, if she had done that, it would have perhaps hurt less. He feels like a fool, standing in the middle of the road, calling out her name, and a years-old nickname that she didn’t like, and one that he felt only held significance for him.
What they had not had was closure; or at least for him, it was that, the absence of a final answer to his unasked question, something between them still hanging in the air. She could ignore it, live on with her life, but he cannot. There should have been closure, he’s told himself time and time again, or was I just too unimportant for her to even give a damn. It isn’t true, he knows, Sol wouldn’t do that to him, or to anyone else for that matter, but on some nights, it becomes impossible. He doesn’t blame her either; he blames his own self for the loss of his closest friend. If only he hadn’t been stubborn enough to ask her out on the day of graduation. He should have waited a little bit more.
But then, should he have waited?
“Sol!” he calls out again, jogging lightly to keep up with her steps, “Sol! Wait up for a minute—”
He’s interrupted, Sol turning abruptly to meet him halfway, which results in him having to backtrack, “what do you want now?”
He smiles brightly, “how about Pyongyang naengmyeon? I know a place nearby that’s good.”
She stares at him, like she can’t really figure out his deal. He holds up his hands, “look, all I’m asking for is a meal. No strings attached.”
Surprisingly, she nods once, turning on her heel, “lead the way, Prosecutor Han.”
--
I should not be doing this.
Her phone buzzes, and it’s Yeseul. You should not be doing this, the text reads, and Sol has to gather all her willpower to not scream in the middle of the street, I know, I fucking know, I shouldn’t be doing this with him right now, going for lunch when there’s—no, I just cannot do it.
She thinks it would be good, for her to have one lunch with him, to get him out of her system, Yeseul’s wisdom about not having lunch with someone who is technically her opponent in the court be damned. She just needs to have lunch with him once, and then she can stop feeling this way.
The restaurant is small, but bright light filters in through the large windows as they take a seat at one of the empty tables. There are a lot of them, she thinks, looking around, just after the lunchtime rush, or the restaurant wasn’t a very good one. Either way, she was supposed to be having a meal with Han Joon-Hwi right now, and as Sol takes a seat, she realises she had been vastly unprepared for this meeting.
He doesn’t look like the Joon she knew back in Hankuk, that is certain, but he doesn’t look like what her imagination had unhelpfully supplied her with either. He looks every inch the prosecutor, with dark circles underneath his eyes and that slouching posture she supposes every prosecutor has, as though he had been carrying the weight of the whole world. It’s sad, somehow.
“Are you going to order?”
“Hm?” She turns her gaze, and sure enough, he’s looking at her just like he had done all those years ago, when she had a stupid letter attached to her name like a real-life suffix that followed one around, and he used to lean over tables and grin all up in her face and mock her by saying Sunbae. It’s—uncomfortable. She didn’t think she would revert to her university self so easily, but with him, it feels like second nature, “You said Pyongyang naengmyeon, so we should get Pyongyang naengmyeon.”
“All right,” he teases, but it’s light, the kind of tone one would use with a co-worker, which strikes her as somehow offensive (am I not more important than a co-worker?) and she spots a glint of something else in his eyes, but shakes her head free of the thought, just as he says, “so, how is work?”
She rolls her eyes, “I don’t think you asked me to lunch after all these years just to talk to me about work, Han Joon-Hwi.”
He smiles, “right, I didn’t, two orders of beef bone soup, please.”
She stares at him, “it’s summer,” and turns back to the ahjumma, “two orders of Pyongyang naengmyeon, please.”
He just shakes his head, looking at her in that funny way, and asks, “so, do you remember, or do you not?”
What is he even asking me about? “No, I don’t,” she replies, pouring out water for the both of them, “what are you even talking about?”
He shakes his head at her again, “never mind. Let’s eat.”
She can’t help but feel as though she had just missed something important, at least by the look on his face. Or maybe that’s the naengmyeon talking.

Kenma watched you.
He watched as you slowly set your phone down with a quiet sigh. He watched as you picked up Ankha gently in your hands and began to stroke her fur. He watched as you looked out into the distance, your eyes unfocused, your mouth curved slightly into a small frown.
Kenma found himself frowning, too. He didn’t like seeing you this worried. A simple appearance in the background of a livestream had turned your life on its axis, and it was taking a toll on your mental health, as well.
What should he do? He was the one you turned too, after all. But he was terrible with words—if saying his order at a restaurant was difficult, how could he even imagine comforting you?
His eyes dropped to the console resting a foot away from him, and he let out a tiny sigh. He wasn’t good with words, but he was good at video games.
Kenma extended the Switch to you with a soft smile. “Do you want to play?”
You played Smash this time, something that you picked up surprisingly easily. Kenma, however, wasn’t paying attention to the game. His eyes kept drifting back to you. You seemed more relaxed now that you were playing, but every so often your smile would drop and your eyes would unfocus.
Kenma frowned again.
Come to think of it, you only knew him for about a week—or maybe less? Why were you coming to him when it was obvious he couldn’t do much to comfort you? Didn’t you have other friends? There was Kuroo, the one who had introduced you two. (Though, now that he thought about it, Kuroo wouldn’t be much help.) Then what about your brother and his friend?
Kenma glanced over to you for what had to be the umpteenth time. He paused, considering his words, and then put down his controls. “Do you have any other friends that live around here?”
You didn’t seem as uncomfortable with the question as Kenma was, even offering a smile smile. “Apart from you, Kuroo, Hajime and Oikawa? No, not really. Why?”
“No reason.”
You shrugged. “Now that I think about it, it’s kind of weird, y’know? As a kid I basically clung to Hajime, meaning I was friends with Oikawa too. I haven’t really been the type for friends, per se?” You frowned. “Does that make sense?”
“No, I understand.” It was like that with him too—apart from you, Kenma’s closest friends were probably only Kuroo and Hinata. Everyone else was a mutual friend or an acquaintance.
“And whenever I need something, I would turn to Oikawa or Hajime. It’s actually weird for me to be coming here now. But,—” your voice became more solemn, “the thought of being in the house with Hajime and Oikawa just felt… suffocating. Being around you calms me down, I guess?” Your eyes widened at that statement, as if you didn’t mean to say it aloud.
Kenma ducked his head, wishing his hair was down so it would hide his blush.
You felt comfortable with him—and Kenma did too. Whereas talking to others gave him anxiety, he found himself easily being able to talk to you. (It was ironic, how easy it was for Kenma to talk to you but still not able to comfort you.)
His mind floated back to the conversation he had with Hinata. Kenma’s eyebrows furrowed. Did Hinata ever ask you about him? He glanced over to his phone, only to remember as he reached for it that you were still sitting there.
“Can you give me a second, Y/n?” Kenma asked, swiftly tucking his phone in his hoodie’s pocket.
You looked up with him with startled eyes. “Uh, sure! Go ahead.”
Kenma ducked into the hallway, pulling out his phone. Sure enough, a text from Hinata glowed on the screen.

Kenma sighed and slipped back into the living room. Your expression was thoughtful, although unfocused. You continued to stroke Ankha’s fur, but more aimlessly this time.
“Y/n?”
You didn’t move an inch.
“Y/n.” Kenma’s voice was louder. He took a few cautious steps toward you, saying your name a third time. You blinked and turned to face him, giving him a startled smile. “Oh, uh, did I drift off there?”
“Yeah.” Kenma sat down and picked up the controls. He paused and turned to you again, his expression full of concern. “Are you... okay?”
“Oh.” You gave a small shrug. “I’m doing better than before.”
“You kept drifting off.”
“Oh! I’m uh, I’m thinking.” You looked away from him, rubbing circles into Ankha’s fur. “I think I want to start all over again.”
“Start…” Did you mean your art blog or something else?
You leaned your head back. “Yeah, like, start my entire life with a clean slate. New blog, new twitter, new hobbies—” e/c eyes flicked to him, only for the briefest of seconds—“new apartment, new roommates.”
Kenma played with the controls, avoiding eye contact with you. “Do what makes you happy.”
“Yeah.” Kenma’s gaze snapped back to you. You had a wistful, almost dreamy expression in your eyes, a soft smile gracing your lips. “What makes me happy.” You looked back at Kenma and the expression dropped, a sheepish smile taking its place. “Ah, whatever, lets just go back to playing!”
Kenma frowned but picked up his controls anyway, sparing you one last glance before focusing on the screen.
Two hours passed rather quickly. You played Smash for another half-hour or so before switching back to Animal Crossing. Conversation was light, comfortable, and Kenma found himself easing back into that odd familiarity he had with you. You seemed to be doing the same, but every so often you’d look over to him as if to ask something and then back out of it, turning back to your Switch. It frustrated him at first—what weren’t you asking him?—but the hypocrisy of the situation humbled him. He couldn’t ask you a simple question either.
(But then again, there was a heavy weight over his question. Six simple words-will you go out with me?—carried much more meaning than six simple words normally did. What if Hinata read the situation wrong, and you only saw him as a friend? What if you said no? What if you exited his life almost as quickly as you came?)
Eventually you set the console down with a heavy sigh and stretched your arms above your head. (Kenma glanced over at the exposed skin before he could stop himself.)
“It’s already two,” you remarked, glancing down at your phone. “Are you hungry?”
“Not really.”
“Onigiri or inari sushi?” you continued, disregarding his response. “Do you still have some leftover rice from last time?”
“I’m not-” Kenma shook his head, letting his protests die away. “Yeah.”
You gave him a small, smug smile and walked over to the kitchen, humming to yourself. The sounds of cluttering pots and pans that Kenma oftentimes forgot existed followed.
She knows me better than myself, he mused. It’s been barely a week and you were such a strong presence in his life—was it because you watched his streams? Your friendship with Kuroo? You were popping up in the most unexpected places, first behind the counter at the flower shop, now at his front doorstep meekly asking if you could stay for a while. You chose him, even when there were so many others out there.
“You’re getting soft, Kenma.” Kuroo had said that to him last night after you went home, a smirk playing on his face. Kenma had shot the dark-haired boy an annoyed glance and a bitter retort, but he saw the truth in the statement now.
Kenma let out a quiet, defeated sigh. You were doing so much for him and yet he had nothing to offer.
He had to change that.
“Y/n?”
“Hm?” You turned around to him, expectant, and Kenma realized with a sickening churn of his stomach the reality of what he was about to do.
“Is there something on your mind?”
He couldn’t even ask the real question.
Your face falls. “Yeah, there’s a lot.” You glanced away from him, rubbing the back of your neck. “I’ve been meaning to ask you a question, actually.”
Kenma held his breath.
“Can I move in with you?”
The response flew out of Kenma’s mouth before he had time to consider it—something that shocked him, because he always was careful of his words.
“Yeah.”
