I love your Terror catboy AU, it’s a funky combination of adorable drawings and Victorianesque pseudoscientific hierarchies. However, it made me wonder about catgirls/doggirls; if you’re happy to answer, how do you see the intersection of gender and hybridity playing out in this universe?

I LOVE THIS QUESTION THANK YOU FOR THIS QUESTION i have a lot of thots on this bc the whole "angel in the house" image of the ideal (middle class) victorian woman is such a fun concept to play with more under cut

ok so what im about to say rn really only applies to middle class and upper class women in this au as those are the main characters in the terror if we get into the lower classes its a more complicated and nuanced story.

anyway in victorian times women were expected to be chaperoned everywhere by an older woman such as a female relative or female servant lest she be corrupted by the ills of the world and by men etc. this is where cat/doggirls come in. its expected that if you have a daughter then you goooootta adopt a companion or two for her both to show off your status and to ensure that your daughter has a friend / chaperone / mentor / moral compass for life. so in cat/dogpeople households the cat/dogboys usually go off to whatever institution their bloodline is associated with and cat/doggirls usually become companions for the wives and daughters of the men employed by those institutions. its very different from human family structures because the expectation here is that your child will not stay with your household, youre making children knowing that they will likely not belong to you regardless of whether they are male or female and that you might never see them again once theyre adopted and they need to be adopted or else its a failure on you and your bloodline. (grim i know) this system is also why each generation of cat/dogpeople tends to be fairly large, little and hodgson and irving all have an overabundance of siblings and cousins many of whom theyve never met in their life.

interestingly, cat/doggirls are actually more valued amongst these families than cat/dogboys because cat/dogboys can only be sent off to the institution the bloodline is associated with whereas cat/doggirls can be sent off to any upper/middle class household regardless of association and it would still be considered respectable AND it creates new relationships between human families that the human owners might find beneficial (kind of like how marriage was historically the exchange of women to strengthen political ties between families). this means that excess cat/dogboy sons are often disappointing to the parents - edward little is one of these. all 3 of his elder brothers had already left for the navy so he grew up playing w his sisters and getting dolled up in their dresses and being told that oh he'd make such a pretty girl and pretty bride oh if only he'd been born a girl etc. totally doesnt fuck him up.

speaking of fucked up theres hickey and his whole situation w sophia. having a catboy as a companion for an upper class girl is a big no-no and only happened because [insert hickey backstory here that is too long and really should have its own post]. no body approves of this but sophia loves him so very much and they were inseparable up until they were separated when sophia went to tasmania with the franklins and hickey was abandoned to the streets against both his and sophias will. sophia refused to adopt a new more appropriate companion in tasmania and after the franklins returned to england she tried to find him but couldnt and assumed he died. then when it seems like the ships are lost and jane starts campaigning for a rescue mission suddenly hickey shows up and for a few blissful years they are together again. he is older and quieter and has scars he wont explain, but hes still hickey and sophia still loves him. and then sir john comes back and fucks all of that up again.

sorry this was meant to be about gender dynamics in my deranged catboy au but i got distracted by hickey (as per usual)

Blanche - doesn't seem to be down for ~feelings~ or at least ADMITTING THEM so if he were to do either I'm guessing it would be a night out at 79s not a date. would he want to go with you to 79s or would he want it to be a squad only thing? I think he'd be pretty intent on keeping you separate from the squad if he could help it. Mainly bc I think he has so many demands that he just wants one (1) thing for himself but he also wants to do it in a way where he isn't ACTUALLY GIVING HIMSELF TO YOU BC HES DUMB AND PUSHES YOU AWAY so my guess is he'd do neither would go out with the boys and then find you after to... U kno.... Fuck u through a wall... Bc if he can't have you then he can at least make it MEMORABLE FOR BITH OF U

Blue - definitely wants to go on a date. also wants to go to 79s with you. Wants to do everything with you???? I just think he'd drop everything if he could and would be like yes let's do literally anything as long as I am with you. A literal angel who I lub.

Jaws - date DATE D A TE NI G H T. Bump going out he wants to date you. He wants to date you hard. He wants to do all of the dumb dates he's seen in holodramas. He wants to walk you to the door of your apartment. He wants you to ask him up to your room for... Tea. Caf. Fucking whatever as long as he can bridal style carry you into your bedroom. Once you're in the bedroom tho that's when we are no longer in a holo drama but a BAD PORNO IF U KNO WHAT I MEAN

Sweets - b a b y. I feel like this would be tricky. Probably wouldn't want to go to 79s with you but would also be very stressed™ about going on a date with you. I think he'd really want to go on a date but would be so overwhelmed and unsure of what to do with himself. I think you would have to just suggest doing things together and not call it a date. Like take him to candy shops but not call it a date or maybe if there is a zoo or someplace with animals tell him you really want to go there and oh sweets do you want to come with meeeee. And then later he gets back to the barracks and the bois are like w o w sweets dates y'all and sweets is like... Sweets.exe has stopped working "tHAt wAS a DATE BUT I DIDNT OVERTHINK THE ENTIRE TIME" and then I fink he wants to go on dates with you all the time after that 💖💖💖

Kami - 79s all the way baby. Not only bc he wants to drink and have fun with the squad and you, but a l s o bc you two should go check out the fresher together. Maybe inspect the structural integrity of that wall in the back... Vigorously. Maybe make sure the supply closet is secure. M a y b e make sure the booth cushions are gonna hold up... For Science. I think eventually if you ever got to the point of getting a confession a REAL ONE out of him he'd want to go on all the dates but until then I think wacky hijinks in 79s is all you're gonna get... Not that we mind that 👀

Fuse - o fuse baby definitely no dates. Nothing even remotely resembling a date. If he smells date activity or feelings then he is o u t. I think he'd go to 79s with you but I al so feel like he would ditch you at some point NOT BC HE DOESNT WANT TO BE WITH YOU BUT BC HE THINKS YOU SHOULD FIND AOMEONE ELSE THE LITERAL DUMBASS definitely think he would mainly limit your interactions to quick fucks and that's it (u already talked about him breaking things off with you and how that would happen and how you would come back together and I CANNOT IMPROVE UPON PERFECTION)

Bruiser - kinda like blue I feel like he would be down to do anything as long as you're with him. 79s? Y es. Date? Also yes. Mainly I think this would come down to you. He wants to know what you want to do. He also definitely wants to fuck you whether it's after date night or after a night at 79s there is no hiding how much that man wants it 👀 he is looking respectfully JK HE WANTS TO F U CK he would not be shy about that. I won’t lie to you, I actually found episode 6 really boring, 7 was less boring and 8 was maybe a little bit funny and I lowkey enjoyed it so much. So yeah, the first two reacts are kinda boring because I was super bored, but 8 is kinda funny. As usual, major spoilers for season 1 of the clone wars.

You can portray a sense of suspense and intrigue in a natural way that many other writers - published ones included - struggle with. You delve into the darkness without it feeling forced, and you have an amazing grasp on the psyches of the characters you write for (which is a quality I adore in writing and strive toward myself).

this is striker, he’s 28 ( soon to b 29 #ariesculture ) n he’s very complicated.. very complicated....

his mom cherry kim ( nee corallo ) is the daughter of lorenzo corallo, renowned filmmaker. daphne had a stint in acting in her youth as well but ending up withdrawing from the spotlight once she married his dad.

his dad is warren kim, business man

what kind of business you ask ? well..

let us rewind a little bit, shall we? now if you know anything about the ins and outs of organized crime in new york city, the name corallo might sound *eyes emoji* familiar to you. giovanni corallo was a boss of the lucchese crime family until his arrest and… you guessed it… that means our man lorenzo corallo is a man of the mafia !

lorenzo, however, wasn’t a first-born son which also meant he wasn’t an heir in any way shape or form and was free to do his thing you know BUT when it came time to arrange marriage for his one and only daughter, cherry, it was Expected of him to keep it in the family

enter the kim family, who had been loyal to the lucchese family for as long as they’d been in america and had built up quite a reputation for themselves in the family, so it was just a natural choice to marry off cherry to their son, warren

they had two kids! their first-born son, dagger, and their second-son…. STRIKER !

and, as in all mafia stories, there is no better prize than the benefits reaped from die-hard loyalty, so in addition to getting to marry a corallo girl… a series of unfortunate events ( i.e. some deaths and arrests ) led to the promotion from right-hand man to acting boss of none other than our very own warren kim

now being the child of an acting mob boss is stressful, but being the second-son of an acting mob boss is… slightly less stressful. see, cherry stepping Out of the spotlight was a strategic move on her own part but was entirely her own decision which meant that striker was free to choose the exact opposite

with no real mafia-related responsibilities or expectations ( other than keeping his mouth SHUT ) on his shoulders, he was more or less… free to roam however he wanted and as he’s always had a taste for the finer things in life, there’s no real surprise that he chose to follow his mother’s side of the family and became nothing short of a socialite in new york city

which.. despite what the press says abt our #mans striker kim ( i.e. being a billionaire playboy, irresponsible, reckless, wild, etc. ) he’s smart n his main motivation for heading straight for the spotlight is bc every person who falls in love w him is part of a complex and expansive insurance policy that makes it that much harder for the mafia to make him Disappear, u know ?

this is one of the reasons why striker and dagger never Really not along, though striker’s always had this theory that dagger was built for nothing but the mafia anyway bc he’s straight up one of the meanest, cruelest, most RUTHLESS people that striker has ever met. but, like, with a name like dagger… how could you not be?

things really start getting #Complicated for striker when he’s ABOUT to graduate from college and his dad yeets this mortal coil in a Shocking Tragic Unexpected death ! it doesn’t really affect striker all that much bc striker spent a lot of his life living with his grandfather in the city but… rather when his father dies it’s dagger that ascends into the role of acting boss and BOY OH BOY that’s nothing but trouble for striker

dagger gets striker roped right back into the mafia that he worked his whole life to try n get out of.. just like that. sad.

and because striker is… como se dice…. a stubborn shithead with a penchant for the dramatics, he starts looking for a way to make his brothers life absolute hell because! yes! striker IS the person who fucks with the mafia! what a moron!

for a good few years it was just minor stuff, nothing really consequential, but that gets boring very quickly bc ... u know ... it is what it is

ANYWAY. he really finds his in to what’s going to make dagger kim’s life HELL and that is getting himself involved in a little heist group. there are only so many events that striker can show his face that end with a robbery of some sort before it starts to become suspicious, and it doesn’t take a genius to connect the kim family to the corallo family to the lucchese family. it’s just enough to keep people talking but not enough to actively incriminate himself. and as long as he’s not publicly throwing the lucchese family under the bus, he’s still, by all accounts, insured by the mafia as the son of warren kim.

anyway! enough w the backstory! here’s some fun lil personality n headcanon stuff :’)

first and foremost.. he does have a face tatoo. ( and an eyebrow piercing and yes i have photos of both if u want to see them ) it’s of a crown on his left cheek and he got it within a week of his father dying and dagger forcing him to come back into the mafia to Assert His Dominance n show dagger he was still in charge of his own goddamn decisions so fuck you dagger

dagger punched him in the face for getting the tattoo and he had a black eye for two weeks but you win some you lose some

on the surface? rich kid asshole!!! rich RICH kid asshole!!! you know the kind of guy you take one ( 1 ) look at him and you’re like yeAh u absolutely think that ur better than me ? that’s him

fluent in english ofc n also korean and italian, his primary language is lit rally a jumble of korean and italian tht nobody can understand but like.. him n dagger n his dad ( rip ) n he also knows a little spanish and japanese.

he loves to bet!!! he loves it!!! it’s probably from growing up in a family where making bets on things was a major source of income but he will 100000% place bets on anything there is to place bets on and will rope as many people into his betting pools as possible

he hasn’t had his gay awakening yet isn’t that tragic?? turns out the mafia ISN’T a very lgbt friendly place, who would have thought?? so that’s absolutely something that’s going to happen bc we know that i love to make my characters suffer esp when it’s related to their attraction to someone whew…

he’s somehow both the biggest gossip and the most secretive person that you’ll ever meet??? like he’s an instigator n will make offhanded comments abt what he’s observed other ppl doing recently that he thinks are… inch resting… and you’ll have this long ass conversation w him and not realize until like 2 hours later that he didn’t say one ( 1 ) thing abt himself the entire time

you know how finnick from the hunger games used to get paid for things w secrets??? that’s so striker to the core… like you can’t buy him or bribe him bc baby has $$$ and is so disinterested in the glitz and glamor of fast cars and expensive drinks and whatnot, so if you really want him to do something for him… you’re going to have to trade him some secrets… n that’s that on that!

he doesn’t like to take his shirt off around ppl bc #scars ( predominantly the large letter L that’s branded on his chest but there are some others that i haven’t decided on yet ) anyway he does not partake in the pool parties n as explanation has just always told everyone that he doesn’t know how to swim… n he’ll die w that lie, thank u !

very paranoid... has 2 different phones w his contacts n codes.. folds his clothes a certain way so he can know if someone touched his stuff... has a fun in a safe under his bed that he changes the passcode to regularly.... he also has some ocd but a lot of it is #trauma

How long did your questioning process take (if you’re not still going through it)?- hmm i was gonna say it didnt take long at all but then i started to think about it and i actually started “questioning” i guess when i was about 11. i remember i was sitting in class just like letting my mind wander and idek how i got 2 this thought but i remember thinking “hmm…i think i would date a girl. i mean if i met someone who i ended up really liking i wouldnt just not date them because they were a girl” but as far as i knew i was still only attracted to boys so i still ID’d as straight. also i went to catholic school lmao so i wouldnt come out even if i knew i wasnt str8.

so i kinda jus went about my business until like my freshman year of high school and by then i had gotten a tunglr so i knew abt sexuality stuff and my fave band at the time was green day and billie joe armstrong was my Idol and he’s bi and i also knew some bi girls at school so i had started Questioning and thinkin “hm maybe im bi” around then but the catalyst was this girl in my algebra class named tabitha (who is bi!!) and i’d noticed her before and thot she was cool bc she was kinda punk (she had piercings and tattoos!! at the ripe age of 15 How Cool Is That) and one day she showed up w her hair curled and she was wearing this like lace dress kinda thing and i was like “Well That Does It I’m Gay™” and then i came out to my friends soon after that

Idk if yall have seen it, but ur Very Good post about Martin representing hope reminded me a bit of madoka magica. Then I thought abt how that series+its sequel movie ended, thought abt tma ending like that, and now im going thru it. Again idk if u familiar with pmmm+pmmm rebellion but like. what would yall think of tma having an ending like that. id give u my own thots but my brain spiraled into comparing tma 2 other anime w similar themes ("are we gonna get end of eva'd???") and it wont stfu

I’ve been thinking about this for a Long While, especially since me and Not Sam have been using Madoka Magica as a partial inspiration for this one tma au under wraps and have been just watching fight scenes because like ??? In a lot of ways the comparison is really intuitive??

I mean, both Jon and Martin would do practically anything for the other, even if it meant something More Than A Little Morally Questionable, if it meant keeping the other safe. Homura and Madoka also share the respect that JonMartin eventually comes to, as well as the inevitable spiral into deals with the devil for the sole purpose of keeping the other safe. Hell, it could be argued that Martin already tried to pull a Madokami move by trying to give himself to the Lonely; going away from all he knew and those few he loved and cherished merely to keep them safe, even if it meant erasing himself completely, though not in death.

But at the same time, I feel as though a direct comparison is difficult because in the end, Jon and Martin are ultimately more dynamic as a relationship; they get on each other’s nerves and don’t agree on things ideologically and butt heads a hell of a lot, which is a far cry from Homura holding Madoka up on the pedestal that she does. And because of that, though I can see Martin going the route Madoka does (the whole “I will sacrifice myself to become the embodiment of hope and scoop up magical girls avatars to take to live with me in law of cycle chillness thus erasing my very existence from reality just to protect everyone”), I don’t think I can see Jon going Homura’s route.

The thing about Homura’s route at the end of Rebellion is, it ultimately disrespects the current Madoka’s wish. This is absolutely tragic narrative-wise and makes for some damn good cosmic horror tragedy, but in the end it also doesn’t paint Homura as being the best person. There’s nothing wrong with that and I could genuinely go on for hours as to why Homura being a fundamentally selfish person whose main power of evil is still somehow “the power of love” in a magical girl anime is a fuckin brilliant idea, but ultimately it just doesn’t jive with Jon as a character.

Jon as a character, while initially selfish in a very petty way to cover his own self-failings, is in actuality a rather selfless person. It doesn’t always manifest in the best way (ie what he did to Jordan Kennedy), but he fundamentally does things for the sake of others and to respect their wishes. That’s how he maintains his humanity. If he were to go Homura’s route and rip the divinity out of Martin to bring him back down to earth to live safely, that requires a measure of disrespect to Martin’s wishes that I feel Jon won’t have by episode 200.

With Homura, she disregards any growth or change the current timeline’s Madoka goes through in favor of following the wish of the one who died beside her- “don’t let me get tricked”. With Jon, he’s done nothing but acknowledge how he and Martin have been changing and works hard to accommodate that. If Martin truly wanted to sacrifice himself and had found a way to do so before Jon could get wise, I can see Jon ultimately coming to terms with the fact that it was ultmiately Martin’s decision.

So in terms of ending- I can see TMA ending off a la Madoka Magica the show, but not necessarily the movie. But also thank you !!! For Asking!!!! Because god now I have so many more Thoughts TM...
