I have seen maybe half a season of TUA and didn’t read the comics so let me tell you seeing those panels where Vanya is yelling “We belong on that stage” (and in reference to herself and her taller blonde bass-playing brother) drawn in profile with literally Gerard’s haircut and outfit was a big shock to the system. I never even considered that he’d inserted elements of himself and his bandmates into TUA except for a bunch of weird edits people made comparing how much Aiden Gallagher looks like Frank but now I feel like I really need to read it.

im really looking forward to rereading all of the comics after this semester's over because i haven't done that since volume 3's run ended and i'll definitely make more coherent posts about it then but like. it's really really interesting to compare to all of gerard's other art because he is just...so distinctively him, even across different mediums and genres. tua and mcr and hesitant alien and kjna and his visual art etc etc etc like his artistic fingerprint is stamped so boldly and unapologetically all over them and that's something i really love about him. like his art, love it or hate it, is sooooo genuine always. even when he's purposely imitating other artists, he's very consciously doing it in his own voice, putting his own spin on it.

when i say tua and mcr are completely separate projects i mean it - i don't think one should only ever be discussed in relation to/in the context of the other - and, above all, tua is certainly not like...autobiographical, or a direct representation of real people/events. it's led by gerard but it has a different creative team than mcr does and that really shows as well - i definitely wanna talk ant this when i have more time but part of the reason im not sold on conweap as an album is because it's too umbrella academy - it's really evident that gerard was working on both of them at the same time, and letting one influence the other too directly. mcr's a band, not a Gerard Project, and umbrella academy is largely a duo (w gabriel bá), so they can't just be transplanted onto each other yk.

anyway I'm rambling but all this to say - tua isn't meant to be "about" mcr any more than bullets is "about" 9/11. but gerard's life was changed and shaped by his experiences in the music scene throughout his life, by dropping everything and living as a penniless artist, by becoming suddenly (in)famous, and that really shines through in tua. he says he drew inspiration from touring band life to write a dysfunctional family, and the dehumanising effects of fame and attention, and of being categorised and scrutinised on a private or public level, are huge themes - as is addiction, mental health, complicated grief.

like...i actually got into mcr through the tua comics lmaooo. i read volume 1 because of wonderful @blackmoldmp3 talking about it and immediately said oh. i need more from this dude's brain right now. and i was soooo not disappointed haha. i really am obsessed with quite a lot of the things gerard is also obsessed with as an artist. the particular themes and imagery and scenarios he's fixated on are really very consistent throughout everything he does - only the way they're discussed or portrayed does change over time. i don't rly subscribe to the idea of gleaning specifics abt artists' personal lives from their works because, beside all else, it just does them a huge disservice (that's my number one gripe with the popular talking pounts around hes alien and frank's solo work in particular; however "confessional" you wanna read art as, it's still art that was created with skill and intent.)

anyway that's way off topic dkfnfj. what i do love about this kind of thing is looking at distinct creations in the context of the rest of an artist's body of work. like...yeah, gerard's said there's a lot of mikey in klaus. has dressed similarly to vanya and the kraken and the seance at times etc etc. has compared himself to the rumor, because she's the one he relates to most. puts a lot of his familiar ideology surrounding music and performance into vanya. puts angry teenage vanya in a shitty punk band with her disillusioned teenage brother on bass, and puts a classical music prodigy in a punk band as an excellent guitarist, writing songs about killing the president etc etc. i could go on! because these things are just scattered everywhere through the comic, just like all of gerard thematic and aesthetic and ideologic fingerprints.

so what's reallyyy interesting to me is looking at umbrella academy as something gerard wrote on the road with mcr across multiple years. volume one was released while the tbp world tour was ongoing, and volume two only a few months after. the progression of parade -> tua -> conweap -> danger days is SOOOO fascinating to me, especially because one of the things that really works about danger days imo is the way it kind of shakes off some of the tua-style gritty cynicism and returns to mcr's defiant, extravagant theatricality. if you go through tua with a fine-tooth comb you'll definitely find the most direct comparisons to conweap, in terms of mcr. the way dd approaches the themes it has in common with tua is just.....so different, and so so mcr. and then you can see the at times self-referential development on those things in hesitant alien - AND THEN VOLUME 3 COMES AROUND AND LIKE. AUUUGGGGHHHHH the change and growth there is SO apparent. btw i don't mean "growth" "progression" etc in this post to mean "improving" - i just mean change and development in a neutral sense, bc it's so interesting to see it laid out there in an artist's body of work. but like. man it makes me crazeeee actually the way gerard picked tua back up....almost certainly around the same time mcr started discussing a potential reunion. and the way that foundations revisits and reconceptualises mcr's existing catalogue is paralleled in the way vol 3 of tua is, like...........like there's so much life lived there, between those things. gerard's even said he's changed his plan for the ending (if we ever see it 🥲) because he has more compassion for his own characters now and doesn't want to see them broken down for good. he says he's gotten better at listening to other people - for starters, he's a lot more conscious of his own subconscious racism/whiteness that came through at times in the original run and has expressed regret for that (namely, the entire main cast being white, with a couple of side characters being uncomfortably stereotyped).

but just like. augh. im not gonna lie man i have no idea what i've just typed im sorry it's probably so rambly bc I'm so dizzy rn and definitely am not gonna proofread it or whatever skdjfj but. I LOVE ART! I LOVE ARTISTS! I LOVE DIVING DEEP INTO AN ARTIST'S BODY OF WORK AND WATCHING THEM REINVENT THEMSELF AND/OR DOUBLE DOWN ON THEMSELF (SOMETIMES FOR BETTER, SOMETIMES FOR WORSE). obvs this fandom genuinely does have a big issue with invasive/un-self-aware parasocial behaviour but there's a difference between that and like. getting obsessed with a particular artist. that's so normal and in fact necessary to life imo. i think every artist literally has to have ppl like that i can't imagine any other way to live it's just a specific type of human connection at a distance baby. don't get me wrong tho i also wanna chew on his thigh. anyway.

my god. how did i get here what even was your question. tua. yes it's crazy. it's not for everyone for sure but it has enough of the shit that makes me crazzzzyyyyy that it got me into mcr which made me crazierrrr so. yes i can recommend. especially if ur like me and lovvvve stories that are a little bit fractured by design. that dance around big parts of the story, where there's as much significance in an absence or in a tiny background detail than there is in any dialogue or action scene. most of the criticism i see of tua is about the pacing but like. to my tastes it's a really great use of the comic medium yk? lmk if you want content warnings or something there are plenty skdjfj.

ahhh i have so many!!! i'll try my best to keep each category brief so i don't ramble on and on ehe

anime: i have too many to name... but i really enjoyed given!

manga: dengeki daisy!! i’ve read it on and off since i was about 16 (i’m 24 now) and it always makes me cry and scream...their romance is such a joy to see unfold! i highly recommend it!

movies: interstellar! the soundtrack and story gives me chills, and the first time i watched it with my partner i literally ugly bawled into his ear sdfjndskjfn. other favorites include promare, spirited away, howl’s moving castle, and ride your wave — most anime fans have probably seen the first three, so i’d like to encourage anyone interested in a (sad) well-buit romance to please check out ride your wave! yet another movie i ugly cried to...

series: gravity falls, steven universe, and arcane! as a league player, seeing the characters and lore of runeterra become a hit show made me very nostalgic and happy (also after only having fanart and some brief in-game interactions to tide us over beforehand, cait/vi is finally a thing <3), but i highly suggest it to anyone who doesn’t play league or is even hardly interested in it. the animation alone will blow you away!

books: tgcf by mxtx and erha by meatbun, though i really suggest anything at all written by these two goddesses. tgcf is a fave because of the wonderfully written pairings (hualian and beefleaf always fill me with absolute joy — hualian truly created love...) and amazing storytelling, and erha is just wonderfull all-around. it’s a mystery, tragedy, so many misunderstandings, and even has dubcon/noncon (which is always a fave for me ehe). i am currently collecting all the translated books and soon i will be unstoppable .

games (otome): i’ve played many, but olympia soiree is my all-time fave otome! i love how the story and romances unfold, and i found myself loving each character rather than having one or two i only cared for. yosuga and akaza are my favorites! if you play, please feel free to gush about it with me!!

this is me rambling, but i'm laughing cause....

me: has a character named "ophelia knight" cause she's a "white knight" type of gal and is her own knight in shining armor. she was originally made for "the b*tman" cause it's hilarious to me to set up opposite who are also SIMILAR IN WAYS. but, anyways, i also had her in "alternate worlds alternate people" with savannah but like.....i put that on hold cause i honestly am scared of dopplegangers and kept scaring myself sjkhsdf haha. but now me thinks miss ophelia will work great in a new concept (i'm still using her for the B*tman thing cause it's funny to me) but for her personal project i love this new idea i have ddkjfhsd that takes place in a futuristic 1940s type of place.

then, i also have a character named "aharon midnight" because my niece keeps talking about the "midnight man" and all i can think of a noir detective everyone calls "the midnight man" and i think he'd make a good partner for ophelia

after that, i have a character named "douglas fray" who's a big ole nerdboy professor who's actually a vampire. but his surname is "fray" cause he's always getting lost in the "fray"

and finally i have a lady named 'cyla el din' who's name literally translates into 'from ancient times" and "faith" who is so weird about the supernatural. and would be funny against dougie.

and i'm laughing cause my bird brain was like "how about you put them in the same project?"

which led to me wanting to use "vanya gamal cooper" in it even though she already has a project. but who cares, i just be wilding making little worlds i do not finish xD but i love the idea of vanya x aharon x ophelia. and dougie x cyla!!

and i'm having a blast...connecting things. lol.

Iike kudos to mr Page for perfectly capturing what that looks like in a woman. There's no cute quirkiness, she's not a sexy librarian, she's just a girl/woman who is out there.. doing... whatever, but not all that much. Every time i see her on screen im like "yep, thats jus some lady who's not really sure what shes doing there, buuut she's doing it."

Vanya has no 5-year plan, she has no real ambitions, whenever she's in a conversation with her sibling, there is nothing she's trying to get out of it (except to get out of it lol) , she's just there man. Going throught it, staying alive, being very chill about it mostly(thanks, drugs) She's not boring, nor an npc, she just feels like real normal person, even without having her obnoxious siblings for contrast and I love that. We don't get many actually mediocre women on screen and us bitches need some representing..

Sometimes I wonder if people even want human human characters. Like when Peter Quill lost his shit on Thanos after he found out he killed Gamora, someone Peter was very close to, people acted like he was the villain for reacting in a totally human and understandable way. Like RIP to you guys who think you can hold it together when someone who you love gets killed violently but I’m different.

I feel like it’s an extension of purity uwu culture where every character is either perfect and does no wrong or they’re horrible villains incapable of redemption, but realistically if characters are only those two types of people shit is gunna get boring fast because none of those relatable human moments can fit into either of those narratives. Let characters be human and make mistakes god damn it, and if you think you’re more perfect than a human making normal human decisions in high stress emotional states than you’re probably not very self aware of how your actions impact other people.

officially finished umbrella academy in 24 hours.. and i gotta say i’m really dissatisfied with how they handled the situation with vanya. 

maybe things will be addressed in season 2 and things will change, and i know they wanted to save her if it was possible, but it really, really rubbed me the wrong way the way her siblings villainized her. she’s a darkness of their own making--the whole time that she grew up until she became an adult, they aliented her. they keep blaming it on their dad but they were the ones who chose to perpetuated excluding her. and as much as they say that they’re adults now and she needs to start taking responsibility for her actions, they do too. it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth to make the victim of so much pain and sorrow into the villain. while what she becomes and the destruction she causes isn’t okay, it is absolutely understandable with the amount of tremendous suffering and pain she’s experienced from them, and their actions were never really that of repentance except for allison. it’s utterly human to go through what vanya did and want to finally be on top for once. she shows true remorse for what she’s done multiple times, and the siblings continue to be shortsighted, and i really disagree with that writing choice. if you’re going to tackle a theme that is as weighty as this, i expect it to be seen through to its proper conclusion, and if this is it, then i’m definitely disappointed. i really hope there will be a more just outcome, and that this doesn’t turn into the shame and blame vanya game, because that would really negate the whole purpose of telling the story of such a character in my opinion.

Five Hargreeves

Ah, my favorite number. My lucky number. Too bad my lucky number has been through some… stuff. Very unlucky number.

Hoooooo boy. Five. What to do with you, man. Five is definitely the absolutely most traumatized, most overlooked one of the siblings (Vanya is a close second, Klaus lagging in third).

Boy, I knew about five before I even watched TUA. My friend, @chickadee634, writes fanfic for him, so she showed me some of that and that’s really what got me into it. I have great memories of sitting with my friends, watching a small fifteen year old murder grown men.

By now, you’re getting tired of my mindless rambling, so let’s just go.

Nobody ever takes him seriously. We clearly see this in season two when his pleas to help save the world are collectively ignored by his “loving” family members. Honestly it makes me very sad to see, because he tries so hard, and his siblings can’t see the fact that if they don’t get their shit together, there will be no social life to get to.

Five can easily be summarized by this line [about Nico DiAngelo] by Rick Riordan, from the excellent book The Tower of Nero:

“He looked like a person who had been hit not once, not twice, but so many times over the course of many years that [he] had lost sense of what it was to feel not in pain.”

(Apologies if it’s incorrect! I am going from memory here.)

Five has… not had any relax time in more than forty five years. In the long, lonely apocalypse, his only companion was a mannequin that is consistently ridiculed in the series by his siblings. Eventually he has to give her up, and then when he finally gets her back, he has to give her away again. He gets a shrapnel wound to the gut. He gets a concussion Flynn Rider style and falls in a pile of bricks. He’s rewound time more than once on no sleep. He has a bullet wound.

Basically, what I’m saying is, Five is a fucking champ.

He has been through so much shit- isolation, manipulation, being ignored, dna changes, the trauma of killing people, leaving behind the love of his life, finding the love of his life again and then being forced to leave her again, ptsd, malnutrition, growth stunting, anxiety, depression, torture, so much more, and GOD, I want to give this boy a hug. He’s been through so much and his family members (although I love them, they’re kind of ignorant bitches to Five) don’t see the fact that he’s struggling until he’s literally passing out.

Let’s talk about Five’s relationships with his siblings.

Five loves his family. They are his one motivator. He can’t admit it because he doesn’t want to tell them how much he’s been through for them, because he sees it as a weakness. It kind of is! Anyone could make him do anything for them.

Time in the commission:

Five spent YEARS- YEARS- in a place that objectified him for his powers (“you’re a legend!” etc). He spent SO LONG in a toxic place that sent him to kill millions of innocents, a place that ALTERED HIS FUCKING DNA to make him feel LESS GUILTY ABOUT BEING A MURDERER.

And he’s still so impacted by Reginald! (I.e., the scene where he’s in the closet and Reginald is outside of it and Reggie steps forward and Five steps back, which is a symbol of defeat and submission in most animals, signifying that his father still has a great impact on his choices, and still intimidates him.) His father is his greatest abuser (actually, he has a lot of abusers- the Handler, AJ, + his father).

Five has been spiraling through space and time for so long that now he doesn’t know what’s the past, present, or future, and before he can even get adjusted to space lag, he’s thrown into an apocalypse, which is quickly headed up by another apocalypse. He’s confused, and he needs a break. Plus, I think the only thing he’s eaten since he got back from his 45 years was a fluffernutter sandwich.

Conclusion: Five Hargreeves has been through A LOT OF SHIT (fault of Gerard Way) and needs a fucking break. Petition to let this lil guy take a nap in s3!

Alright, only two left! Let’s see how we can pick apart Ben Hargreeves next.

You can portray a sense of suspense and intrigue in a natural way that many other writers - published ones included - struggle with. You delve into the darkness without it feeling forced, and you have an amazing grasp on the psyches of the characters you write for (which is a quality I adore in writing and strive toward myself).

OBSESSED with how Klaus and Five interact in s1

Flashback bank scene: Klaus is leaning on Five’s shoulder

Five compliments Klaus’s skirt

They stand closer together during the funeral than anyone else does

Klaus pushes Five back protectively even if Five rejects it

Five goes straight to Klaus for help with a seemingly nonsensical problem, after he admits that Vanya and the others are ‘too young’ to understand the seriousness of the situation

He seems to have more patience for Klaus than the others do? That could be because he hasn’t seen him for 17/45 years, so hasn’t had to put up with his bullshit that whole time (but Diego also seems fairly patient and he has, whereas Luther has had no interaction with him recently and still has no tolerance)

He seems confused but pleased when Klaus offhandedly acknowledges that he believes him about the apocalypse -- that comment about being alone

Five WILLINGLY tells him about dolores as if in exchange for that faith

He lets Klaus ramble about their ‘cover story’ even though it’s time sensitive? Like Five wouldn’t put up with Vanya’s sensible questions or stop to get an injury treated (when he was literally bleeding out!) but he’ll stop to let Klaus talk about meeting a girl at the disco? He only walks away when Klaus mentions sex, which is a pretty normal sibling interaction 

He seems annoyed when klaus is in the dumpster but still stops to talk to him even if he won’t let Klaus come with him

He also laughs when Klaus jokes about chocolate pudding waxing (I know that’s Aidan breaking character, but I still like it)

As the season goes on, he has less interactions with klaus and is more stressed and annoyed at everyone, so there aren’t any outstanding moments, but I like the ones I’ve listed

My thoughts on Edmund Pevensie? Mr. redemption arc boy? My sassy bean? Sulky little shit boy? Oh my god where do I start.

(putting under the cut because this gets unnecessarily long and my mutuals are tired of me)

Edmund Pevensie is a horrible little gremlin who turns into a delightful little gremlin over the course of one book/movie and ends up being one of the best characters in the series. I don't know whether to rant about book!Edmund or Movie!Edmund, but I supposed I could do both?

So pre-redemption, Edmund is a generally awful person. I really like that. Whenever we get a redemption arc in modern media, it's usually 70% defending why Character A is actually a sad emo child who was neglected and actually you know what? It's everyone else's fault that this person does shitty things (i.e. k*lo ren, vanya hargreeves, mcu wanda, etc).

Edmund is a truly hateful person and canon DOES NOT APOLOGIZE OR VALIDATE IT. Even in the movies (where they make him more sympathetic by drawing attention to the fact that Edmund is a child being manipulated by an abuser) they recognize the fact that he was a nasty person before the White Witch ever came into play.

I LOVE that. I love a redemption arc. And the only way a redemption arc really, truly works is when the character being redeemed is a Bad Person. It makes it so, so much more satisfying when the character finally comes to their senses and Does The Thing that starts/completes their arc.

AND EDMUND'S IS TOP TIER. In the books, it's a bit less explicit, but by the time he finally reaches Aslan's camp and talks to Aslan, he's pretty much made a full 180. He is immediately forgiven by his siblings and the Narnians and when the White Witch turns up, he is unafraid. He has full confidence that Aslan knows what he's doing. In the Battle of Beruna, he's the only person smart enough to realize that going after the White Witch's wand is the best tactical move. There is no clear "heroes redeemed journey" (as i'm calling it). Edmund realizes that he was wrong, accepts Aslan, and helps defeat the White Witch.

The movie makes Edmund work a bit more. He's forgiven by his sisters', but not quite by his brother. It's vague whether or not the rest of Narnia has forgiven him. When the White Witch arrives, he shows visible fear. It's only after he breaks the White Witch's wand and dies/nearly dies doing so, that he's allowed to be fully redeemed and forgiven by his brother.

I have conflicting feelings about how both of these narratives are different and the indicators thereof of said differences, but that's a whole other meta post I don't have room for. What I can definitely say I do love about Movie!Edmund's redemption arc is how they conclude it. In the book, you don't actually see the moment where Edmund breaks the White Witch's wand and it's more inferred than directly stated that she's the one who wounded him. He also doesn't come as close to actual death in the books.

In the movie everything is absolutely fucking perfect. They start out the battle with Edmund looking unsure of anything except Peter and they end it with Edmund dying (?) in front of him. The moment where Edmund decides to defy Peter one last time and break the wand? 14 year old me was losing her SHIT. They literally could not have concluded his arc better. 10/10 Disney.

Prince Caspian--books and films--gives us a clearer picture of who Edmund is after his redemption arc. He's still kind of snarky, but 100% a ride or die for his siblings. He believes Lucy when she says she sees Aslan, supports Peter and Caspian in their quest to get Caspian on the throne, and is the most level-headed character in the book. He is also incredibly sulky in the books and 1000% done with Trumpkin's shit. It's delightful. They translate this in movieverse for him being 1000% done with Peter's shit which is even better. He does not really have an arc or plotline, but as a supportive character he's a 10/10.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has my favorite Edmund. This is an Edmund without his older siblings. This is an Edmund who gets to bond with Lucy, Caspian, and Eustace and have wacky sea adventures. The Lucy/Edmund dynamic is STRONG and I am living for it. Both of them banding together to hate Eustace for half the book? 11/10. Both of them banding together to love Eustace for the other half of the book? 14/10.

Also, this is the book where we find out Edmund reads detective novels. Which is adorable and so in character for him.

Oh my god let's talk about Eustace and Edmund. After Eustace tells Edmund about what happened with him and Aslan and apologizes for being a dick? Edmund is immediately there to reassure him that all is forgiven, and actually? Edmund was a worse person his first visit to Narnia. (Pls get some self esteem Edmund.) Let's talk about Eustace and Edmund being protective over Lucy (who doesn't really appreciate it, but it's adorable just the same).

Movie!Edmund in this story is also a snarky delight, but the main thing that jumps out to me is HE AND CASPIAN ARE SO GAY FOR EACH OTHER HOLY SHIT. LIKE THEY TRIED TO PUSH LUCY/CASPIAN FOR A HOT SECOND AND THEN GAVE UP BECAUSE CASSMUND IS LIVING THEIR BEST GAY PIRATE LIFE.

Oh we should probably talk about Edmund in the Horse and His Boy. Yeah, this one is a real delight because we actually get to see grown up Edmund. There are so really awesome moments here, especially with him and Susan. My favorite is where he basically tells her, "yeah if you married that dick prince I would have totally hated you for it. thanks for making a good choice on that." Lmao. It's really interesting to see him more measured and mature in this book.

So anyway, to cut this rambling reply short. Edmund Pevensie has been my favorite character since I was 11 and first read the Narnia books and he continues to be in each adaption of the series. Can't wait for the Netflix adaption.

How come you don’t think Vanya will open up to her family about what happened to her?

I’m assuming you’re referencing this post anon! Uhhh I have my reasons, moreso hopes tbh i ain’t got no proof just a hunch lol

A) Narratively, I think it would be really interesting if Vanya, who publicized her sibling’s trauma and used her own to build a faux success story, would be stingy about sharing details like that. Idk I just think it would be a telling character trait.

B) Everyone she’s opened up to has either left or betrayed her. Five, her sole confidant, left her when they were kids. Harold, who she fell hard and fast for, was just using her. And yes, I know it wasn’t the writer’s intention but after Vanya got her real memories back and was her “real” self to Sissy, Sissy left (for valid reasons don’t get me wrong). I think she’s just got a lot of baggage when it comes to opening up to people nowadays.

don’t get me wrong, i’d kill for vanya to just rant about her shitty week and get the comfort she desperately needs
