this is miss elora lavain!!!! she lives a life on the run, so she goes by a few other names as well such as maris starseeker & nerine rubystar. she is a moon elf :3 she's also a bisexual trans woman (she/her)! as for class, she is a swashbuckler rogue w/ the pirate background

elora is a dnd character i made for a faerun campaign i played back in 2018... not as my pc, but as a major npc. i played that campaign as my other oc, arahana rubyfist. elora was her girlfriend that disappeared under ~*mysterious circumstances and served as arahana's motivation to adventure. there was other stuff going on as well, but the crux of arahanas story involved chasing elora thru her past & discovering the Truth of who she rly was

cause u see elora lavain was a persona made to conceal her past as the Infamous Pirate Captain Maris Starseeker (tm). yeah she got a pretty big bounty on her head from Pirate Crimes and so after her crew was destroyed, she decided to retire. despite losing her crew she had quite a lot of treasure hidden away and decided to Retire in Luxury, posing as nobility. she relocated to waterdeep and the plan was to lay low there as long as she could until Whoops. she fell in love. she was pretty torn btwn not wanting arahana 2 find out who she rly was & her Impeding capture (she had a lot of bounty hunters after her)... and so when she left it was Already too late.

she was captured & sentenced to death, awaiting her execution in a high security prison known as the dreadvault. arahana DID manage to bust her out with the help of her friends though. and they were able to reunite!!! and reaffirm their love for eachother!!! and swear to be honest with eachother from that point on!!! and it still kills me!!!

busting someone out of a high security prison garners a lot of heat tho and so arahana & elora hid away in a cozy lil mountain cabin. during that time they worked on their relationship and eventually got married!!! they're still married and i love them to death. they are my Favorites. that's where her story ends for now!

more on the personality side of things... so ill first of all say, that eloras personality is pretty Fragmented. shes got bits of herself split up among her various identities. usually each identity is based on one facet of herself, or a fantasy, and it develops into a Character thru that. for instance, maris starseeker is Definitely a power fantasy and is a pirate queen thru and thru... while elora lavain fits more of the Princess Role. her ability to Fully immerse herself in these roles helps her evade capture cause she is able to present herself as a Totally different person to most ppl. however, if you know her well enough, there Are consistencies. for example, elora is generally pretty extroverted. she's the kind of person that draws attention, and is a Born Leader. she is confident, bold, fun, flirtatious, ambitious, competitive, and adventurous. she is pretty charismatic as well! she is also a compulsive liar, as she's so use to having to Lie about everything that she is that its just Natural to her at this point. she's also crafted a life where she doesnt rly have to deal w/ hard emotions, so she's able to give an air that she is Above it all when really shes just bad at dealing w/ emotions LOL. she is the embodiment of this

only walking out means completely leaving the area and creating a new identity. #girl

anyways this is. a lot im so bad at summarizing shit but i think this serves well enough as a primer into the Elora Lavain experience. she is by far my favorite oc and is my Everything girl. and thank you so much for asking about her!!! :)

[ A-pseudo nonogram-analysis on the Five-Tribes because this series is FILLED with lore gaps ]

Note: I was heavily inspired by @/silverserpent 's (I didn't want to tag just in case) interpretation on the function of each tribe and kinda wanted to make my own take on this subject (combined with a rewrite idea I had)

((I'll be adding the chinese symbolism aswell given that the source of the monsuno energy is around Tebat, the show's in-universe location of IRL Tibet, an autonomous nation in China and I do interpret that the members of each tribe relied on the cultural symbolism to decide on which animal/monsuno represented their tribe best

-In another post I established that every tribe had it's own monsuno as a god, and that there were 6 for the 5 tribes (Bear, twin Ravens, Moose, Snake and Hawk--aka the main animals that the monsuno of our leads take from) and that each animal in a way might symbolize what each tribe was charged with:

-Chase's tribe [Bear] was the leader tribe that is a charge of leadership (obviously) and monitoring of the rest of the four tribes. They were well known for their wisdom as bears, are often depicted as symbols of wisdom, maternity but also masculinity (CN) and stubbornness shown. In chinese tradition, placing a bear in front of a house is a sign of protection of the house's inhabitants so we could also say that they are the defenders of the five, the ones most prone to stand up for what they treasure.

Bren's tribe [Ravens] were responsible for building and conducting scientific research on the world around them, maybe also inventing new technology to assist in future endeavors which is fitting considering that Ravens are often depicted as symbols of prophecy, insight, transformation and intelligence (but also death ironically) and in Chinese mythology they represent the three phases of the sun (Rising, Noon, Setting) which might further imply that they were the knowledge-hunters and the ones determined to uncover the mysteries of the world and it's endless skies.

Jinja's tribe [Moose] is a bit of a strange case. In Chinese mythology they are a symbol of fertility, virility and hard work which would make her tribe be the ones to provide meat and fruit. However in general mooses are a symbol of tenacity, determination, strength and wisdom so there is some significant overlap with the other tribes but my personal take is the following: Like I said, they provide resources to all the other tribes and take care of nature and it's animals as a way to maintain their supply and are also capable to stand their ground if it comes down to taking care of anyone that threatens their grounds.

Beyal's tribe [Snake] might have been in charge of maintaining peace and act as mediators (given their current place in canon as peacekeepers that practice Monsuno Sight) and snakes usually symbolise love, health, disease, medicine and immortality so it's fair to say that they were the medics and the spiritually developed population, and in China, snakes are perceived as of the most mysterious and wisest animals which falls in line pretty well with the position of the monks of Tebab imo

Dax's tribe [Hawk] is also quite abstract. The spiritual meanings of the hawk can vary depending on the situation. Hawks (in CN) represent changes, clarity, pursuit of goals, protection, and honoring your inner wisdom. They are graceful yet powerful beings that go after what their needs are, and in general spiritual leadership. I personally interpret them as the soldiers of the five. The warriors trained in pragmatic fighting but also diplomacy and are very goal-driven and persuasive. If a threat comes into push and shove, they will be the first in line to fight it and vanquish it lest it threatens the balance.

Too Old To Play With Toys: The Sad Truth Behind Sokka's Boomerang

This is Sokka’s boomerang:

And as we all know, it always comes back. This characteristic makes Sokka’s boomerang a returning boomerang, rather than a hunting boomerang. This is an important distinction to make, and it’s where the heart of this headcanon lays. Let me explain. 

Accuracy: What’s the Difference Between Hunting and Throwing Boomerangs?

There are three types of boomerangs: the hunting boomerang, the returning boomerang, and the cross boomerang. We’re only going to be discussing hunting and throwing boomerangs, but feel free to learn about cross boomerangs and their construction--they’re really cool. As a general note: the following sources and information pertain to Aboriginal Australian cultures. Boomerangs were used elsewhere, but mainly as throwing sticks, not returning boomerangs.

So, hunting boomerangs, also known as throwing sticks or kylies, have this basic shape:

The hunting boomerang is straighter, larger, longer, and deadlier than the returning boomerang. “With it,” states the Britannica, “animals were maimed and killed, while in warfare it caused serious injuries and death.” This is due to its shape, which allows it to travel in a relatively straight line. With its capability for distance and force, the hunting boomerang is a very powerful tool. 

According to Boomerang: Behind an Australian Icon by Philip Jones, a hunting boomerang can travel around 100 meters. If the boomerang is heavy enough, and the throw forceful enough, large prey, like kangaroos, can be killed. If you want to see a hunting boomerang in action, watch sections of this Youtube video. The range and accuracy of this tool are amazing. 

The returning boomerang, which was used in eastern and western parts of Australia, is very different:

As you can see, the returning boomerang is shorter, smaller, and angled sharply. The shape of it allows it to trace an elliptical path, thus returning to the thrower. But this property is not without its drawbacks:

“A hunting boomerang needs to fly well and nearly straight to strike prey some 200 metres away. The trouble is that the best-flying boomerangs tend to return, rarely departing beyond fifty metres from the thrower. With the returning form ‘there is no certainty of hitting the mark. It may come back too quickly and may hit your own friends standing near you.’ While recognising that the best-flying boomerangs do return, Aborigines defined a technological problem. They needed to strike a compromise between flying ability and hunting requirements...” (Australian Museum).

Now, the returning boomerang could still be used to hunt, but not to kill or maim prey. Its application was craftier:

“When hunting ducks, for example, nets were set up at either ends of a creek or river. A boomerang was then thrown out over the ducks which gave them a scare so that they took off up the river and flew directly into the nets. From there they were collected. At other times during the hunting of birds the returning boomerang was thrown horizontally along the ground into a flock, and, as they took off the boomerang would follow them into the air. This may or may not kill the bird and a harder way to hunt” (murruppi.com).

Still, this wasn’t the main application of the returning boomerang. In actuality, it was used as a toy:

“The returning boomerang was not primarily designed for hunting as it is too light and wouldn't guarantee a kill. Rather, it was designed as a toy for young aboriginal boys. The toy would allow a youngster to practice throwing skills but still make it fun” (murrippi.com). 

So, Sokka’s boomerang? A plaything.

Let’s Bring It Back to ATLA: What Does This Mean?

With the above information, Sokka’s use of his boomerang in canon becomes almost tragic. His boomerang was probably given to him by Hakoda when he was very young. He used it to learn how to throw; one day, when he was older, he would have carved his own throwing stick, and used it to hunt alongside his dad and the other adults of his tribe. 

Instead, Sokka’s boomerang is another aspect of his childhood that was twisted by the war. His boomerang is--should have been--nothing more than a toy. He shouldn’t have had to use it to fend off Zuko, attack Azula, and defeat Combustion Man. Regardless, it did become a tool he used to help defeat the Fire Nation, and that’s pretty fitting when it comes to ATLA’s ideas of childhood and war: Sokka spent years acting as his tribe’s protector; Katara spent longer acting as a mother. Thus, his use of his boomerang throughout the show displays how Sokka was forced into a war-torn world at an incredibly, unfairly young age. As a result, he was forced to adapt in ways that took from him. 

And we’ve all seen Sokka’s boomerang in action. Here’s a video of his greatest hits--literally. His accuracy is insane, and he catches his boomerang every time. He’s more than ready to have a hunting boomerang, yet we see him use his returning boomerang throughout the show, and long after he earns his ice dodging mark. Tbh? I think that Sokka didn’t want to carve a hunting boomerang without his dad guiding his hands. 

So, you might be wondering, what happens post-war? 

Eventually, I think Sokka retires his returning boomerang and carves his own hunting boomerang, but the shape of it is particular: 

“Some scientists argue that a throwing-stick, commonly used by indigenous hunters around the world, is the precursor of the boomerang... Through trial-and-error the boomerang was refined to a point where the most desirable size, proportions and curvature were established. This refinement brought one serious problem: any improvement in flying resulted in a tendency to return. There is little doubt that indigenous hunters brought this experiment to its ultimate conclusion, by producing the perfect returning boomerang” (Australian Museum).

In short, making a good hunting boomerang is hard. Lots of trial and error, and still, hunting boomerangs come in a wide array of shapes. Thus, I headcanon that Sokka carves his hunting boomerang differently, as compared to the other members of his tribe--it’s more curved. This would show that although he's grown up and is in a post-war world, he's changed in some ways that can't be completely undone. 

In other words, Sokka eventually moves on, but the way he throws and uses his boomerang is going to be a little different.

Conclusion

TL;DR: Sokka’s boomerang is a plaything, and this has sad implications. But also? He never should have had one in the first place. Firstly, boomerangs were traditionally made from green hardwood, which I don’t believe can be found in the South Pole. I on god can’t find any authentic sources for bone or metal boomerangs. To be more accurate and still keep with the trend of throwing weapons, I would’ve given Sokka a nuqaq and darts or a bola.

Also, as far as I can tell, Sokka’s boomerang is the only aspect of Aboriginal Australian culture Bryke used in ATLA (I can’t get a confirmation on Hakoda’s name). This is cherry-picking to the max, and it perpetuates the harmful ideas of pan-indigeneity wrt one large, singular culture.

Top 5 anime you think are criminally underrated!

This is a really good question, and it was VERY difficult to keep myself to only 5. These are all anime that I think deserve a much wider viewership! (Plus five more!)

I ended up spending waaayyyy longer on this than I thought, I can’t imagine how much I would have written if you’d said top 10. I can literally talk about anime forever. Here’s some I wholeheartedly recommend.

1. Shojo Kageki Revue Starlight (Action, drama, romance)

This is my newest love, as of yesterday, when I binged the whole thing. The best way I can describe it is by mashing up other anime. Take Revolutionary Girl Utena, iron out about three layers of metaphor, and trim off all of the dark themes related to the Rose Bride. Then throw it in a blender with Madoka Magica and Love Live!, add half a cup of Gay Concentrate, and serve up the result: A character-driven drama about girls at a performing arts school, who settle their differences in magical-girl-fantasy duels styled as impossibly gorgeous theatrical stage-combat musical numbers. Beyond the flash and high concept, there’s a well-written cast, solid emotional core, and really engaging plot.

2. The Eccentric Family (Drama, comedy)

This show is my favorite genre of fantasy; mythical creatures living in the modern world, right under humans’ noses. In this series, humans only know tanuki as the cute little raccoon-dogs, but tanuki are really sentient shapeshifters whose goals are to outsmart the humans who live in the cities, pester the tengu who rule the heavens, live a life of freedom and trickery, and not end up on the inside of a hunter’s trap. The story follows a family of a mother and four sons whose widely-respected father was killed to end up in a human’s hot pot, as they try to enjoy their lives, live up to his imposing reputation, and unravel the increasingly suspicious circumstances of his death.

I have called this one “deceptively light-hearted” when describing it. My friend got halfway through the first season and came back to me with the verdict, “consider me fucking deceived.” This show has weight and does not pull its emotional punches, but neither does it ever stumble into becoming grimdark. Its worldbuilding is solid and the characters are all fantastically developed. Plus I wrote a whole post about one of the main antagonists(?) who I hadn’t even mentioned here.

3. Dennou Coil (Mystery, sci-fi)

Dennou Coil is a masterclass in worldbuilding, in my opinion. It’s a near-future sci-fi world, basically if Google Glass had taken off and become as common as cell phones are today. Many people don’t see the real world, they see the virtual textures of the world as they’re rendered through the glasses. Kids in one city have learned to mess around with codes, collecting tradeable fragments that break off the edges where the system glitches, chasing viruses that hide in pockets of obselete code in abandoned areas of the city where the software doesn’t get updated often. They spend their time after school saving virtual pets from being accidentally deleted by the city’s antivirus, trading tall tales about kids who get caught by the antivirus and get their glasses bricked, and spinning urban legends about ghosts waiting just behind anything that’s visibly rendered, waiting to steal kids when they least expect it. Every detail they introduce is critical to laying the foundation for the mystery that forms the show’s plot.

Everything about this world feels real in a way I’ve never seen in a sci-fi anime. It’s all grounded in a clear understanding of programming, and lives by show-don’t-tell. The stakes aren’t life-and-death; the kids tagging glitches like graffiti to distract the city’s antivirus software are only at risk of ruining their glasses, at least at first. The plot and escalation is perfectly-paced, and the mystery is so satisfying to piece together as it unfolds.

4. ID:Invaded (Sci-fi, action, thriller, murder mystery)

This show is like Psycho-Pass meets Silence of the Lambs. To catch a serial killer, you need to think like a killer, and nobody does that better than killers. A contraption called an “id well” can manifest an uncaught killer’s unconscious mind as a bizarre, unique, deadly terrain driven by stream-of-consciousness, and convicted murderers turned “detectives” dive into these wells to try to solve the mystery each well presents and discern the identity of other killers before they can strike again.

This show is a tightly-written, perfectly paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller. The two layers of mysteries inside and outside of the wells balance high-octane, big-screen action with tight, tense realism. Plus the soundtrack is an absolute banger.

5. Ping Pong the Animation (drama, sports)

Imagine if I told you that there was a show that, in 11 episodes, unpacked how patterns of relationships are repeated across generations, how the tradeoff between talent, practice, and who you are outside of your achievements can scar the spirits of kids, and what it feels like to wrestle with the tension between your core understanding of yourself and how others expect you to be. Imagine if I told you that every major character goes through massive restructurings of their fundamental sense of self and how they see others, and that every single arc comes to a well-rounded and satisfying end. Imagine if the animation style pushed the limits of both realism and absurdity, landing somewhere between rotoscoping and caricature, pushing the impact of action and stretching the character’s expressiveness without betraying faces that are animated like real human people. Imagine that it had a dub so fantastic that it sits next to Baccano and Cowboy Bebop in my mind, shows where the cast threw themselves into their roles with their whole hearts.

Now imagine that I told you that this story is told in the context of high schoolers playing ping pong, and that it’s arguably the best show I’ve ever seen. Go watch this show.

heyo, I love your paleo content but can you elaborate/ source some of the ideas about prehistoric cultural norms or attitudes you mention in the tags? Specifically I mean how different subsistence roles were valued, like how do you tell archeologically what someone's thoughts were 30,000 years ago

Ok so most of that was just thoughts out of my head and it’s not meant to be like, educational. A lot of it is speculation in terms of the thoughts and such

But most of the info in the post came from various anthropology classes I’ve taken, and primarily in studies of modern forager societies like the !Kung. So i was sorta generalizing foragers rather than specifically talking about paleolithic europeans. Of course various forager societies across the globe are bound to be very different, and modern people from south africa aren’t going to be living like pleistocene people did. Though there are things that seem to be present in most modern forager groups [and those in the past that have since become agriculturalists] that can be reasonably assumed to be common in ancient forager groups as well. Stuff like low population density, at least somewhat nomadic, living in small family groups. Stuff like lack of wealth disparity is tied in their being nomadic somewhat, since if you’re carrying all your shit yourself you don’t necessarily want to have a fuck ton of gold and jewels with you. Of course decorations and adornment were a thing, but im not sure if i agree with the idea that it was used to show wealth rather than just humans like things that look cool. In most forager societies nowadays and in recent history, social status isnt usually a thing and people tend to all be on an even playing field. [think about how it’s just families that may congregate sometimes, there isnt necessarily going to be a Leader, especially with how easy it is for people to pick up and leave if they dont like the situation.] you’re right in that it;s not really possible to tell exactly what they thought of stuff, but yea i dont see any reason for gatherers to be considered less valuable than hunters/fishers or for women to be seen as lesser than men.

I don’t remember the actual study that was in the textbook in my cultural anthro class, wish i did it has some really neat things about the !Kung from an anthropologist that lived with them. I do have my lecture about them though! It’s really neat! I didn’t get the pictures and some of it is specific class stuff [like referencing past lectures] and id prefer if this wasnt reblogged since idk how uh, legal it is for me to be sharing this.

//Actually, I have never really thought about this before. The implication, as it isn’t explicitly stated, is that Yi’s sword boots are something his parents made. The are canonical smiths, so it would make sense that a craft of theirs would be used to honor them. The swords are something Yi keeps on his person at least, and they fit in sheathes that adorn the place he buried his only noted family.

  I like to think that similar design beats carry similar explanations across AUs. For instance, any AU where Yi has the goggles is an AU where Doran exists and knew Yi. So any AU with a sword boot motif can also be an AU where he is compelled to carry them in memory of his parents. So lets do a silly, long-winded post about it, shall we? Let’s look at all the in game skins, their sword boot status, and suss out any headcanon commentary about them oh boy no more skins riot.

Assassin — Does indeed have sword boots, though they are of a different design. Assassin is an alternate history of base canon, where Yi makes a life for himself as a contract killer in Noxian territory. There aren’t many divergences from base canon pre war... except that his parents just made a different style of sword perhaps? Probably not, but I’m laughing about this for whatever reason. He might carry these blades instead of the real deal, as he can’t really go back home to retrieve them right now.

Chosen — Does not have boot lightsabers. Very sad. This could be a product of his home planet literally being blown up, or some other planetary catastrophe that meant he could never go back and get a craft of his parents. I’ve always thought of Chosen as a beat for beat canon remake, just in space, but I suppose I’ve not revisited this AU since Yi’s newest base lore. Him not being able to gravekeep could have some interesting implications. But anyway, does that mean his parents were making the lightsabers of this verse?

Ionia — Does not have any sword boots, which makes sense at least in headcanon. It is war regalia, or ceremonial attire. Not even an AU. If Yi was wearing this in base canon he still might strap the swords to himself, but if Ionia issued anything like this during wartime then he wouldn’t have had them yet. I have always loved the idea that Ionia is so magical, that pink being the standard color of army attire could have actually been camouflage.

Samurai — I like Samurai because he doesn’t actually have sword boots, in part because he’s not wearing boots. He keeps the two swords on his belt, which is a nice compromise that looks cool. Samurai is another alternate history of base canon, set a century or more in the future. He could literally be paying homage to his younger self, and may not even have his parents original crafts anymore. Hence why the two swords are in theme with his Samurai design. He’s taken up different sword forms by this point.

Headhunter — Apparently I have false memories of Headhunter having sword boots, because he doesn’t. Headhunter is a weird verse to me now. Used to be Alt History, now it is like.... they are part of a race of hunter aliens? Which, I mean, that’s the theme they were riffing off anyway but... I’m not gonna get into it here. His parents would have also been a part of this hunting species I suppose? Maybe too busy hunting to make swords? Maybe they made the bladed toes on his boot? Maybe they were armor or gunsmiths? I’ll have to think about it.

PROJECT — No sword boots, just cool shoes. This makes sense, as Yi would have lost everything he owned to the experimentation. Maybe Pyke knows where all his stuff is, ahahaha. Yi doesn’t knows he is human, or that he would have parents in this verse yet. I wonder how those memories will go down when they come back? I’d love to build this verse to a point where Yi knew he was human in some way, but I’ll just have to drabble about it when I can.

Cosmic — No sword boots, just some circles that orbit his shoes?? Makes sense. Cosmic probably has no parents. He is his own parent. Though, I will say that any AU featuring Yi in a faction where he has not experienced a Wuju cleansing... doesn’t bode well. The Dark Star is lurking. Light could be the last thing to exist in a universe filled with black holes? He’s not that important but still watch out.

Eternal — No swords, and no boots. Just nice shoes. Figures, since Yi is at a point in his life where his School may not have been destroyed yet. He left it, and so did Fiora, so this Wuju equivalent might have more hope than in base canon. He’ll probably find some swords to strap to his boots when he returns. Was the Sword of Jade worth it, my poor sweet child? RIP Yi’s parents in the potential future of Immortal Journey. They are probably ten times cooler in this verse at least, given that swords have great powers. This isn’t even mentioning the amount of swords he just has in general.

Snow Man — No carrots on his fluffy boots! Man, imagine snow people in their snow smithy, shaving carrots into weaponry. Who is Yi’s parent? The Poro King? Like I said, having Yi in your faction does not bode well for the Poro King vs Ice King Twitch. Since he made Yi, then he should prepare to be dead from some calamity his creation could have prevented. And then prepare for snow boy to tend all the snow graves oh nooooooo.

Blood Moon — Man, a lot of skins ditched the sword boots, didn’t they? IDK what’s going on with BM. Maybe I’ll flesh it out more some day. Yi probably had parents, they were still probably blacksmiths, and Wuju was probably destroyed. No time for honoring your parents by carrying their blades around. Time to kill. Demons are your new parents now. Or if Wuju was not destroyed, then you know how it goes.

PsyOps — Once again I have false memories. PsyOps ain’t got no sword boots. Instead, I like to think they replaced them with the dog tags he has. It’s probably not to do with his parents, but it is a similar feel. He’s still honoring the people he’s lost. He has a set of three around his neck, and a set of two on his sword, the latter he looks at longingly in his animations. At least one person has died that he cares about, maybe more depending on the ID system. RIP whoever Ezreal replaced, probably.

The moral of this post is that I have a lot of false memories about who has sword boots, and funnily enough its all the Alt History verses that have them. Makes sense in the end, I suppose.

The Weekly Roundup 03/06/20

Hello hello! This post marks the first Weekly Roundup, a reflective post where I go over news within the Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game - this includes any unique tops, techs, card announcements and my thoughts of the format. That being said, I understand this post can get quite lengthy and many fans of the show may not be interested in the actual game, so please feel free to blacklist the tag #roundup if you don’t wish to see this kind of thing. Without further ado, let’s break down the past week of the TCG.

Banlist Hype It’s banlist season once again in the TCG, and no card is safe. Everyone has their personal predictions of the cards getting hit, be it wish list or something causing genuine issue within the meta, so let’s break down some of the more frequently discussed cards.

Block Dragon: This is a card that’s been evading banlists for quite some time. While it used to be popular in Gem-Knight FTK, the rise of the Adamancipator meant Block Dragon was going to be abused for its Dragon Ruler-esque effect. Personally, I think Block Dragon should go to 1 if anything - still around for the decks that need it, while hitting Adamancipator, which may not survive this coming banlist. Mecha Phantom Beast O-Lion: Very unlikely to get hit, as a reprint of this card has recently been announced. Limiting would do nothing as it’s currently run at 1 in most decks anyway. Jet Synchron: This is the card that I’m most certain will get hit. It evaded the last list barely, with glow-up bulb and the like being hit for being Halqifibrax targets, but given its frequency of use and ability to revive itself, the card is most likely to be banned completely. Dragon Buster Destruction Sword: The union carrier buster lock is, being blunt, awful to deal with. It doesn’t help with how generic and easy Union Carrier is to bring out, but given how recent both Halqifibrax and Union Carrier are in terms of set release, this card is likely to get the boot to substitute. Maxx “C”: Oh boy, this is the part of the banlist hype where people speculate which cards will return. Maxx C brings out the worst in people - you either never want to see the card back, or you don’t understand why people hate the card when both players can run it. I have my own thoughts on the card, being very against its return, but I will save the word count for a different post if anyone is interested. Card should absolutely stay at 0. These are the most popular discussed cards by far. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tour Guide of the Underworld returns to 3, or Drident goes to 2 since the Barrage hit was quite a pre-emptive hit. A key thing to keep in mind is that the list states “no sooner than June 1st” - it could be tomorrow, or July. With most competitive play being suspended with Covid-19 until June 30th, I can’t see the list coming too soon. Remote Dueling

 Konami has once again reinvented the wheel; the old “skype dueling” is now seeing a return through discord as a sanctioned event.

To participate, you need to join the Konami Remote Dueling server, then find your local tournament store discord server on the list provided. Not all stores are participating; mine isn’t, so you may be out of luck if you wish for an official event. For non-sanctioned events...

Tops of Interest

Unfortunately, without any official events, it’s harder to keep track of what decks are doing well. 

Although this was roughly 10 days ago, Sky Strikers have won the third LCS in a surprising twist, winning over Synchro Eldlich. Despite all the hits, engage gone, the deck still seems to maintain its place as a somewhat competitive deck. Looking at the breakdown of the decks in the third LCS:

It’s no surprise the top played decks are synchro eldlich and adamancipator, but the 22% other decks is quite interesting, especially with a Sky Striker top by Ryan Yu. I would recommend looking up his list if you’re interested in seeing how exactly Striker made it to first.

The weekly Pro Play Tour saw a Burning Abyss player Franco Persano reach first place, in a tournament with over 100 participants. The full deck profile can be found on youtube, but he had also provided some commentary in the Burning Abyss Facebook group, explaining some of the cards he had used. Chaos Hunter was an interesting side choice; the card was sided for adamancipators and Dinos, and the Lancea effect of preventing banishes while discarding for cost seemingly pairs well with the deck’s playstyle.

Other news

 Recently, the trademark for Yu-Gi-Oh sevens has been filed for the U.S. and Italy, indicating that the anime may be making its way to the west through a dub. Hopefully this means Rush Duels may come over, even if it is as a small format like speed duels, as the difference in rules make Rush Duels seem much more refreshing. The youtuber and streamer Farfa will be doing a full set reveal for Toon Chaos midnight June 4th (UTC) I would recommend checking out the reveal, as it should give an idea of whether the set is worth it.

Plenty of new cards have been announced in the past few weeks; Appliancers are making their debut soon in the OCG, many DM based decks are getting new support, such as Jinzo and Harpies, and a card used by Aporia in 5Ds has been announced for Collection Pack 20.

As the banlist looms over us, I’ll be posting weekly updates about what cards I’ve seen pop up in discussions of it. My DMs are open for anyone who wishes to discuss anything Yu-Gi-Oh related; be it the TCG, or any of the series.

1. what’s your go-to cure for writer’s block?

Ugh.. I don’t really have one. ^^; Usually if I’m having  problem I find it helps to go over scenes and stuff in my head and do general daydreaming. Though sometimes the only way for me is to just sit there and stare at my work until I can write again.

2. what got you into writing?

I got into writing as a kid cause my older sister started to write. Her dream was always to be a novelist. She used to read me her stories and I just wanted to do what me sister was doing. 

She writes YA fantasy. Usually featuring magic clans, necromancy, and revenge. She doesn’t have a writeblr, but she has a few unfinished things on Wattpad: here.

3. what was the first thing you remember writing?  

A store about a boy who moved to an island and befriended one of the local “knop” ( The in universe term for a people who are basically nekos ) boys. They were suppose to run around and explore the island but the story never made it passed a couple of paragraphs.

The first thing I ever finished was a story about a group of kids running about wielding magic swords to fight and befriend dragons so the could save the world from an evil empress and her general who was a broccoli.

Alas, I lost the word document sometime ago and all I have left of it is a portion of the first couple of chapters written in a notebook. Perhaps I will attempt to rewrite it someday.

4. how did you come up with the title of your wip?

It took me awhile since I’m kinda bad at naming things. I went through several iterations before deciding to go with something rain themed, cause it’s a rain apocalypse. :P I may have also been reading some things with single word titles and it may have been a little trendy at the time.

Cascade is sort of just a random rain themed name, but I guess it sort of ended up fitting alright.

5. how did you come up with the idea for your current wip? what inspired it?

Soooooo, I’d finished watching a prototype playthrough and got into prototype fan fiction over on fanfiction. There was an author (CleverDucky) who wrote a story (Prototype: Sanctum) I enjoyed and I wanted to see more of their work. 

One of their works was a left 4 dead fanfiction piece (It starts with Desperation) that I clicked on cause it had a vague and interesting description. It ended up being a hunter/survivor romance. Morbid curiosity got the better of me and I ended up reading it. And honestly CleverDucky themselves said it best in the author note under the first chapter where they mentioned they’d been inspired by someone else's work. It drew me in “like a junkie looking for a fix”. 

Soooooo, I enjoyed it so much that I spent several months combing the entirety of the left 4 dead section of fanfiction looking for hunter/survivor fics. (Because a lot of them aren’t labeled so you couldn’t just choose a character to find them. Particularly since a lot of them involved OC’s) There was legitimately a time several years ago where I had looked through all of the left 4 dead stories and read all of the hunter/survivor fics on fanfiction.

Soooooooooooo, you read something you like and when you run out, then you have to write it yourself. But I didn’t want to write fanfiction. SOOOOOOO, I wanted it to be less gross, so no zombies, chose a weird other apocalypse, no military or evacuation stuff, more pst apocalypse since the story takes place later. Threw out a lot, put a lot in, bam, weird monster romance story.

So, yes. This is the TMI version of how I got into writing monster romances.

6. do you listen to music or do anything else to help you write?

I don’t usually listen to music cause I find, for me, it makes it hard to concentrate on making sentences, for the most part. Sometimes I snack on things while writing or do silly warm ups. My favorite is having a random hog run through a scene and freak out all the characters.

7. how do you come up with character names? do they have special meanings?

Depends. Some of them are random normal names, some of them are affectively random nonsense crammed together, some of them are spliced names, some are legit just random nouns. Side characters are random on the spot usually.

Main characters get a bit more care though. I think about it till I just sorta pick one that feels right and it sticks.  

Behind the name is a sight I used to use. I still do occasionally. 

I used to do fancier names that mean things, but these days I like to just go with the flow and pick something “simple”. 

8. do you work on multiple wips at the same time or do you prefer to work on them one at a time?

I always have a million WIP ides floating about and when it comes to thinking about them I do kinda drift about here and there.

In terms of actually writing, I have a bunch of unfinished WIPs laying about from when I was younger. I definitely jumped around a lot when I was younger, but these days I try to focus on one at a time. Though I do occasionally still veer off and write scraps and start first chapters of other WIP.

9. do you have any authors or books you admire or look up to as a role model/inspire you?

Like Actual Authors? Not really… either that or nothings coming to mind at the moment ^^;

10. favorite piece of writing advice?

Ugh, how does it go? The one about raccoons and trash. 

And also the one about how no writing is wasted and how having written it, it helps you become a better writer.

And also the “write for yourself” ones.
