It is finished.

Words I wasn't sure I was ever going to be able to write, but at 11:51 pm last night they became reality.

Bottled Ocean is finished.

I am really, really proud of myself for being able to come back to this story. I started writing it in all the way back in May 2020 so it has been almost four years from start to finish and it's been a really long, bumpy road. So much has happened over those four years and the story went from a vibrant, engaged audience when it first published to, if I'm lucky, one or two engaged readers and maybe five reading it total. It's been really hard to put forth the energy into writing such a monster of a story (it is officially over 250,000 words long) knowing that there's no one there really to read it and even now I'll be lucky to have one or two engaged readers for it.

But it is done. My legacy after writing over 400 fanfictions in the last 7 years is not an incomplete story. It's something I can look back on and be proud of that I wrote that and as anyone knows, 250,000 words is not a small undertaking.

I had promised myself that if I went back to writing this I would finish the story before it began publishing again on Patreon (which resumes today) and then life hit. I had Covid the last two weeks and felt really terrible and dizzy and unable to focus. I thought writing fight scenes was hard, bah, writing fight scenes while you're distracted by the word 'sword' because it says 's-word' and going off on a tangent of swear words you think pirates would say while still trying to write a fight scene is hard. I kept going.

I reached yesterday morning and realized that I still had at least four chapters to write and I wasn't sure how I was going to do it and even if my deadline was self-imposed I was going to fail it.

I didn't.

Outside of taking breaks to walk the dog (it reached 42 here in Chicagoland and for this time of the year that's practically tropical) and guzzling down over half of a 2-liter of Dr. Pepper and trying to drink water in there too, I did it. I sat down, wrote my ass off, and a little over 16,000 words of the most pinnacle parts of the story as it all comes together and concludes I did it. I am exhausted and I honestly didn't even recall most of the final chapter so I went back and read it this morning and not to toot my horn but damn I'm a good writer, and I am just so relieved and happy it is done.

I am done too. My writing journey comes to an end with this story (I'll still for sure be posting on Patreon for the rest of 2024 though with my insane backlog and of course Bottled Ocean and some works on AO3 too) and I'm hanging up my keyboard. It has been a long seven years full of the good and the bad, the bright spots and the dark, but I can look back at this chapter of my life and see that I wrote over 3.2 million words worth of stories to share and I feel...

I feel content. And relieved and honestly my wrists are aching from pressing against my laptop all night, but I am happy. Thank you to all who came on this writing journey with me, who have been with me since As Color Fades Away posted in 2017 or stumbled across my works this year. It has been a life-changing seven years of writing.

I'll still be around here posting updates and hopefully, maybe, trying to get a few of y'all to bite at Bottled Ocean and join me in reading my final fanfiction, but this author is finally, finally finished and it is the start of a new adventure.

My Summary:

Words cannot even begin to describe this absolute QUEEN of Voltron fan fics. Icypanther is truly an outstanding author! Her love for the fandom clearly shows through not only this fic but all of hers! This fic- while long, is Lance centric but also exhibits the relationship between every paladin and lance as well as the paladins with each other. Lance deserves all the love! I’ll recommend this fic again and again it’s definitely publish worthy!

3. Top 3 whump scenes and why? No.6 episode 11. Oh man, this whole episode goes so hard, if you know, you know Detective Conan Chapter 251-254. I remember obsessively rereading these chapters as a 8yo kid No third place because there are 100 scenes fighting for the 3rd place in my head so I'll leave this empty

4. Top 3 characters to whump and why? Lance from Voltron. I love goofballs getting whumped. The switch between their goofy personalities to just pain, yes. Kaeya from Genshin. If it were anybody else, Lance would think they’re messing with him for fun.

But Keith is Keith, straight-forward and guileless. If he’s touching Lance more, it’s only because he’s gotten more comfortable. And on one hand, that’s great, that’s—Lance feels very honored. To add to his woes, a flash behind him appears to be the Castle of Lions exploding - with all the other paladins, Coran, and Allura all still inside.

The only thing he has left is hope - that he'll be found, that his space family isn't dead, that Blue will somehow recover and carry him to safety. He just has to keep breathing.

The team will stop at nothing to get him back, but the paladins are forced to watch Lance unravel at the hands of his captors while they search.

Summary: This diplomatic mission is not going the way Lance had hoped. The diplomacy part on behalf of Voltron is going fantastic and Lance doesn’t think he’d be remiss in saying he had a large hand in that. But the whole impress Shiro bit is an epic fail as Shiro doesn’t seem to notice his efforts at all and it’s only worse with Keith showing him up at nearly every turn. The aliens they’re working on the alliance though have noticed his efforts. But as Lance stands here now, Shiro and Keith’s lives along with a vial of poison in his hands, he isn’t so certain that was a good thing.

My thoughts: We love and appreciate Lance in this household. And Shiro needs to learn how to as well. This is so wholesome at the end. We love to see it.

So the last fic that I read wasn't actually Ninjago, it was Purity of Sin by IcyPanther on ao3! It's Voltron bc the newest Voltron reboot is one of my guilty pleasures (one day I will squeeze Ninjago into it. One day!) and I most definitely recommend that and any of her stuff if you're into whump!

56 - What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

My ability to write copious amounts of text that ramble on yet somehow nothing in the story gets done. Charles Dickens and J.D. Salinger would be proud of me.

Just kidding, it's probably how I've learned to tune my writing into my synesthesia so I know how to make a sentence a certain color! Like I know that if I write 'blood' the sentence will turn purple or 'lightning' is green or something like that.

I posted this update in regards to my AO3 account on chapter seven of Missing today but for the folks not reading that story, please read below (paraphrased slightly).

AO3 seems to have made the choice for me as to my future on the AO3 site as we are going on nearly six weeks now since they initially suspended my account and they have not re-instated my hidden story, To Become the Nightmare, nor have they responded to any of my emails (of which I have sent three, nothing crazy, over these almost six weeks) asking for a response.

According to their own words, there would be a 1 week review period for a staff member to confirm the "offending" paragraph was removed (it was) and they would either re-instate or delete the story accordingly. That deadline of their review was April 5 and clearly nothing has yet been done or addressed. And at this point, I don't think AO3 ever plans to respond to me or re-instate my story and with that decided I can no longer support this platform and continue to post my works here. Unless something changes very, very soon, I am done with AO3.

I will finish up Missing and Touch of Fire but after much thought I will be deleting Worth(less) given that story is not even 25% posted on this platform and I don't want to linger here for months trying to finish it up.

If anything changes I will post an update here, on Tumblr. I had planned actually a writing event on Tumblr once To Become a Nightmare was re-instated to turn this awful situation into a positive one and (hopefully) bring in some donations to support RAINN's mission and help sexual abuse victims, but this storm doesn't seem to be abating and I won't be able to do as I'd hoped. But thank you to all who have stuck with me these many years and especially to whose who engaged with my works and left such kind words about my writing on my stories ♥ It truly meant the world.

1. What was your whump awakening?

Transformers: Armada. The year is 2002 and I am 6 years old. I watch my favorite Autobot, Hot Shot, surrendering his most powerful weapon to save his best friend after they fall into a trap. Then I watch him kick ass even without his sword to get them both to safety after he realizes Megatron isn’t planning on letting them leave. Only for it all to end with him getting shot in the back by said best friend in a doublecross, the entire thing having been a ruse from the start. My brain tingles in excitement as I watch my first ever blorbo get curbstomped by three Decepticons.

The moment is seared into me brain. I will spend the rest of my life chasing that high.

7. Favorite whump fandom?

Linked Universe. I don’t know if it’s the characters or the fandom in general and their atypical focus on found family instead of romance but it’s really fricken good in that fandom

8. Favorite whumpee?

Four, of course! He’s the perfect blend of smol enough to be easily whumped and tough as nails. He can get hurt, but not be pathetic about it, ya know? No one makes him an uwu baby and I love that! My Personal Opinion but people don’t kick the crap out of him enough. There’s not enough fics out there that turn him into a multi-colored paste on the floor. They should do that more. I want that short king Obliterated!

That was fast!! Hahah of course, let’s see:

26) I like to write series! A lot of my stories have multiple chapters / parts that get expanded on and I get more ideas as they progress for what happens after~ I’m committed to writing satisfying conclusions

45) Delimeful, IcyPanther, and arc852! They are amazing writers and while I adore SO MANY more, I read everything I can get my hands on with them~ (honorable mentions to notcool, cinnabee, adrianaintheSnow, TheAsexualofSpades, and callboxkat 💜)

66) I felt the most confident in my writing in 2020 XD I am gaining that confidence back after a few minor setbacks as I grow more comfortable posting again! ^^ I’m proud of what I’m doing now and excited to share

78) I choose where to end a chapter depending on the story: whatever has the most impact! if it’s kinda self-contained episodic-like chapters, I end it at the last impactful dialogue line or after a character reflects on an interaction (though that can be a good chapter starting place too depending on if it carries over into what’s happening next). If the chapter has been building up to something major, I may end on a cliffhanger, hahaha!

90) sometimes! Especially in my description if I’m not purposefully doing so through the perspective of characters. I think my inner (mind) voice and writer narrator voice match up a lot, though I make even more effort to take on the tone that fits the story (I’d say usually funny vs more detailed and introspective?)

Author Summary:

Lance is well aware he's the weak link on Team Voltron. He knows he's not the brightest. But he's not stupid. And he's always thought that even despite his shortcomings he had not just a place with Voltron, but friends who would look out for him just as he would do for them.

But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. While there's no knife to stab him in the back, the ones his friends wield with their cruel, heartless words cuts just as deep. And by the time Lance realizes that something is wrong, that these people are not his friends, it's too late.

The feast has begun.

My Summary:

Words will never be able to describe how much I love IcyPanther. She is such an amazing writer and devoted fan of Voltron- I just love her so much! 💕 I legit cried while reading this. I’ve never related to a character as much as I do Lance. This fic not only exhibits his insecurities PERFECTLY but also included just enough originality. I feel like this fandom sometimes overuses the “Depressed Lance” or the “Seventh Wheel” tag but there are the occasional fics where they are written with just enough. This was just so gut-punching and heartbreaking trust me you’ll like it!
