I've posted my Shiny Skarmory already on here but I feel the need to continue to stress what a genuine goddamn nightmare that hunt was. I started April of LAST YEAR. I sunk over 200 hours into it. It was 21,810 encounters, with a Pokemon that already has slower encounters than normal. People have gotten entire teams of Shiny Pokemon in the time it took me to find one single Skarmory. I NEARLY FAILED IT. I brought 40+ Ultra Balls, left the battle with 6 left. In the time it took me to find a Shiny Skarmory I've replayed the entire Horizon series several times over. This green bird has haunted me for over a year. The nightmare has ended

thinking abt dean's iconic line in the pilot "dad's on a hunting trip. And he hasn't been home in a few days" and how this is him trying to covertly signal to sam what he's talking abt without explicitly stating it in front of jess, right, we know this. BUT the thing that's the fabrication, the thing that he's saying to just sound normal is the "he hasn't been home in a few days." because as far as jess knows (and dean knows sam, can tell sam hasn't told her a thing abt the hunting world) she thinks there IS a winchester home somewhere out there, a home for john to be away from and come back to. but there is no home and dean was off working his own case separate from john. dean probably hasn't actually seen john in a while. but the thing that's concerning is john being out of touch, john's last strange phone call to dean. there was never any home to be gone from, it wasn't about john not coming "home" to dean in time. and like it feels obvious but sometimes i'll see things like "oh dean hadn't seen john in a few weeks and that's what got him concerned." when really, dean probably has gone long long stretches without seeing john, maybe even without hearing from him too. none of that is what got him searching for john. and so what he says to sam is completely for the cover. there's no home, it's not about john actually being gone for so long, he only says that bit for jess' benefit. but the part that sam's supposed to get is he's on a hunting trip. and something clearly happened because i'm here now so can we please go talk somewhere else so i can give you the real details.

Individual Expression in Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse and the trilogy's introductions:
So knowing what we do about the other protagonists of the Spider-verse films and the narrative format of characters introducing themselves and other characters, I think BTSV will open with Miles G Morales introducing himself as the Prowler and Earth-42. Not only keeping with the tone of the first film, but also emphasising the theme of "Beyond" the Spider-verse. It only makes sense that we open on a character who isn't Spider-man - even though they should've been.
But what exactly would that opening / introduction look like? Well, first we'd have to examine how our other protagonists have opened the previous films.
Tumblr media
When we first meet Miles, he's colouring some stickers, and later, we see one of his hobbies is slapping those stickers around New York. We later learn his dad knows about this and disapproves, so instead, Miles bonds over his artistic expression with his Uncle Aaron. By the end of ITSV, Miles paints a mural for Aaron with his dad but he keeps making stickers, most notably on the clock tower because it's somewhere his dad won't find it (and doesn't know he's Spider-man).
Tumblr media
Gwen opens ATSV by drumming and saying she, "didn't join a band to talk about my feelings, I joined a band to hit my feelings with sticks". She also talks about never finding the right band. When she meets Miguel and Jess, her mind flashes to drumming because she thinks she's found her band, and by the end she decides instead of joining a band she just make her own by siding with the people who want to save Miles.
In both films we see this is how these protagonists leave a mark on their environment. It's how they want to live with "no expectations" like ITSV implicates through Miles and Aaron's mural.
Tumblr media
Gwen's drumming is a cry to be heard, and her dad quits the police force after listening halfway through her speech.
Tumblr media
Miles' stickers are a cry to be seen, and reveals his identity to Rio before showing her his graffitied Spider-man icon (even though it backfires).
It's not just an artistic expression it's also in the way they do their hobbies - Gwen hits her drums, Miles slaps stickers...
So what is Miles G Morales' cry?
Tumblr media
Ever since ITSV, Aaron's punching bag has become a subject of interest. When we first see it, Miles is playfully punching it - Aaron even holds it steady for him.
Tumblr media
Later on, we see Miles tie up Peter B. Parker on it, and this scene is later paralleled with how Miles G Morales ties up Miles in ATSV. This works because it shows us how like Peter in the first film, Miles is now the Spider-man in the wrong dimension and how the tragedy of this Miles has gone from a likewise bright-eyed, clumsy awkward kid to a hardened but equally lost teenager. Finally, in both scenes, Miles and Peter make an attempt to break free of their bonds.
Tumblr media
As unfortunate as it is, I don't think we're going to see an updated version of the 2020 test movement in the next film. Even though it looks amazing, that was a character exploration and not actually supposed to be in the final cut of the film.
Aaron punches the bag when Miles believes he doesn't want to be the Prowler. And that may be true. But either way, Aaron views the Prowler identity as a necessity to the stability and protection of his and Miles G's family.
Tumblr media
But Miles doesn't understand that. At least not yet.
For Miles, the Prowler was an unstoppable force of nature that literally hunted him until Aaron unmasked himself and was so entangled in Kingpin's schemes that it got him killed. But in Earth-42, Aaron and Miles G are "the only heroes in that dimension" according to the artbook. Both Miles and Miles G are products of their environment, but that doesn't mean either is more or less heroic than the other. They're just operating on literally different timeframes.
Tumblr media
And that's why Aaron punches the bag, and its why Miles G puts his fist near Miles' head because they want Miles to understand that no, the Prowler identity is not a corrupt alternative to the Spider-man identity based on preconceived misconceptions. Without much evidence, we believed Miguel was a "good guy" based on his identity as a Spider-person. Why can't the inverted case be applied to Miles G and Aaron?
This is why I feel like in the next film, Miles G's "Let's do this one last time" will be him training with the punching bag before Miles comes to Earth-42. Not too dissimilar from Jinx's boxing-machine scene from Arcane minus Jinx's psyche, but a scene intersecting with current and past events. Like with Miles and Gwen, Miles G training with the bag is his own cry for "no expectations" of being labelled a hero or villain.

lucifer gender symbolism essay part 4: women in white
masterpost
this is far and away THE reason i started thinking about fem!lucifer in the context of spn back when i first got into the show.
Tumblr media
women in white are SO ICONIC on supernatural. the first scene of the show features mary dying in a nightgown that is technically pale pink* but registers as white, and later in the same episode jess wears a mostly-white nurse costume and then dies in a pale periwinkle* nightgown that also reads as white. the pilot is all about constance welch, who is literally a type of ghost called a woman in white. in bloody mary, sam has a vision of jess standing on a street corner wearing a starkly white nightgown. lilith goes to her death to break the last seal in a white dress. it’s a whole thing.
women dressed in white especially in early spn are almost always either about to be the victims of something horrible, or are dangerous and monstrous — and often they’re both, especially if they’re dressed in all white.
our two main victims from this costuming-based character category are mary and jess. both of them represent brutal, devastating, life-changing, unfair loss. mary’s death is the reason the winchesters uprooted; it’s the reason john is like that; it’s the reason sam and dean grew up the way they did in this heavily trauma-based and trauma-inducing lifestyle. it feels random (even though we later learn it wasn’t); it was definitely shocking; it was cruel and unfair. jess died the same way, and her death at least played some part in sam going back to hunting; it didn’t feel as random because there was already precedent from mary, but it felt just as shocking and just as cruel and unfair. these women in life represented idealized domestic bliss and normalcy for their partners and families, and their deaths caused the end of the possibility for that kind of romanticized normal american lifestyle for the men close to them. in death, they become symbols behind which the men mourning them rally to seek revenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(there’s endless more things to be said about mary and jess’s death and their costuming etc but i gotta keep my eyes on the prize here of lucifer analysis. ok. carrying on)
now let’s do two of the main monsters in this category: constance welch was a victim of her husband’s infidelity before she became a killer, and as a ghost she kills unfaithful men, never able to get the revenge she wants for what was done to her and becoming a monster (partly) because of it. she can never have enough, she can never break the cycle, and, importantly, she “can never go home,” because she also killed her own innocent children, who want their revenge on her. again, lots to be said here about how sam and dean also can never go home etc, but i gotta keep it pushing. so: lilith. lilith was once a human woman whose essence was warped until she became a demon. we don’t know specifically how that happened, something to do with temptation, but in any case, the transition from human on earth to demon in hell is typically portrayed as undesirable, to say the least. beyond that, stories of the human fall are stories about not being able to go home: a human in a fallen state can’t live in their home of eden anymore, and has to rough it outside of the garden. presumably, that’s part of lilith’s story. the story of demons on supernatural is very similar: human beings who die and go to hell, and then are trapped there until they manage to get out (which is portrayed as being very difficult to accomplish in the earliest seasons of the show, especially for demons in the deepest parts of hell, like lilith). so the earliest humans fell and could never return to the garden, and humans who go to hell struggle to return home to earth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so that’s all a whole symbol system, right? if you’re a woman in white on supernatural, either something horrible happened to you, or something horrible is about to happen to you. you’re going to represent horrible loss whether you’re just a victim or both a victim and a monster. you’re going to get trapped in an unending trauma cycle, or you’re going to be the reason for someone else’s unending trauma cycle — probably both.
and lucifer…
well!
lucifer’s first two appearances (after the nun) are as sarah, nick’s dead wife (another character who fits the victim subtype of women in white), and jess. both times, lucifer wears a white nightgown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and for good goddamn reason, because lucifer fits the archetype perfectly.
did lucifer once represent an ideal? absolutely: lucifer was the most beautiful of the host, god’s favorite, THE angel.
does lucifer’s loss represent a loss of perfection and purity? yep, lucifer was proof angels could make choices they weren’t supposed to, even/especially the best of them.
did the loss of lucifer cause a huge upheaval for his family that sucks a lot and changes the course of their lives for the worse? big time: god left; gabriel ran away; heaven seems to have at least somewhat restructured in the fallout; everyone set their sights on the apocalypse after which the problems will end and they can finally rest.
do those who lost lucifer miss lucifer/what was lost when lucifer fell (even if that’s complicated)? seems like it. uriel definitely does; michael seems to have missed lucifer, even while being angry at and blaming him; and raphael at least misses how everything was before it fell apart.
was what happened to lucifer violent and awful? pretty unquestionably. regardless of how much you think he deserved it, what ended up happening to lucifer — being cast down, imprisoned in isolation in the depths of hell for millennia, total loss of reputation, and a death sentence — is point-blank brutal.
can lucifer ever go home? nope.
does anyone want revenge for what happened to lucifer? well, lucifer does, at the very least
can lucifer escape the cycle of trauma? nope: he perpetuates it by doing the apocalypse among other things, leaning into the devil role, doing more of what got him that title in the first place, and even when he tries to escape it by offering to drop everything to walk off the chessboard with michael in swan song he gets shot down.
that’s a signature supernatural woman in white, babey.
so, ok. woman in white, though. men show up wearing white sometimes on spn. a man wearing a white shirt is less of a tell that something is going to happen to him or because of him than it is for women, but it’s still part of the visual shorthand. men also wear all white sometimes, especially in psychiatric contexts (notably sam as a patient in season 7 in the context of hallucifer, as well as sam in houses of the holy while he’s playing a nurse). but these instances are uniforms that the wearers have little choice about wearing, and they are not especially gendered: female patients also wear all white (e.g. marin in ‘the born-again identity). to my knowledge, there are no roles in supernatural specifically for men in white; men wearing white do so in contexts where women also would and do wear white.
Tumblr media
the one** exception to this is lucifer in ‘the end;’ how much endverse is zachariah’s creation vs what literally happened in that version of 2014 is debatable, but either way, sam!lucifer was one of our few examples of a ~man in all white in spn. and like…this reads to me as costuming wanting to do a woman in white thing, but not wanting to put jared padalecki in a white dress. lucifer already appeared as sarah and jess in all white nightgowns; lucifer fits the woman in white archetype; there’s no Thing like that for men, so they put sam!lucifer in an all-white suit that draws a stark visual parallel to the women in all white we’ve seen lucifer as before, and there you go. still a woman in white archetype, just wearing a man costume at the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
**i know asmodeus did a white suit too but that's way outside of the range of kripke-era symbolism i’m mainly talking about, and it seems like probably a direct reference to lucifer’s endverse look. i’m also probably not the right person to do an analysis of asmodeus even if i wanted to include a discussion of his suit. so.
to sum up, lucifer is a genderless non-human entity, but (s)he’s also a Woman In White™, even when appearing as a man. lucifer is, i would go so far to say, the epitome of the Woman In White, the maxed out, most op version of everything the show did with that symbolism. so. lucifer is fitting into a feminine archetype real well, there.
*i’m not trying to ignore that neither mary nor jess actually died in white. as far as i can tell, most of the fandom remembers mary’s nightgown as white, and i’ve had conversations about whether jess’s nightgown is actually white and it’s just a lighting thing, so they’re both Women In White (TM) even though they’re not actually that (and jess is explicitly turned into one in sam’s memory and in lucifer’s appearance as jess wearing the same nightgown as in ‘bloody mary,’ since that nightgown is actually definitely white).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s a great choice, i think, to have them fill this symbolic role while actually having been maybe more complicated than that; having their memory simplified and ~purified so they can serve the perfect fridged domestic woman role — regardless of their actual personalities in life or how well that symbolism actually applies to them (and it really doesn’t fit at least mary that well, given her hunter background that we learn about later!) i bring this up because of lucifer’s endverse white suit, which, you know, is an all white look, but also has that off-white shirt. so, like, something something, attempts to fit into a specific archetype, but there are inevitably going to be slight imperfections because no living thing can be JUST a symbol.
(a lot of people have written extensively about women in white in supernatural, including me. i have focused largely on lucifer, because of course i have. some additional posts here, here, here, and here.)

001 - fuck montrose
Soho — 03:45 A.M ( Catherine Steel )
The devil isn't always a little red man with horns, a long pointed tail, sometimes he can be handsome. And Rhys Montrose was the most beautiful demon Catherine had ever seen.
Blue-eyed, stocky, almost territorial in posture, and showered with all the English class, Montrose wore his elegance in a different way than London's rich men, who paraded around covered in gold and diamonds, showing off their fat wallets at Soho parties. . He had a fat wallet, but he didn't show it off. Rhys carried his bullion in an old, battered bag.
"My God, it's Montrose!" - Jess said giving me an elbow, which made me drop my drink.
“What the fuck. Why did it?"
"You did not see? Rhys is right there"
Jess's eyes almost popped out of their sockets they were so wide. She gave him that psychopath smile, teeth clenched, and waved at him. That Rhys Montrose grinned and waved back briefly as he walked down the club stairs. Down the stairs, on the last step, a small group of people gathered and pulled out their cell phones, pointing at Rhys, who just gave them a restrained smile, no teeth showing.
I didn't live in a cave, it was obvious I already knew who Rhys Montrose was. He became one of hundreds of celebrities with a bad history behind stardom who were "unassumingly" paraphrased in a few paragraphs in a booklet with an iconic cover that happened to be at the top of the Times for enough weeks to be placed on one of those lists. "Books You Must Read Before You Die" on the Internet. Yeah, I knew him, as did everyone else in that club.
“He's literally the hottest man I've ever seen in my life."
"Close your mouth before drool falls into your drink."
I laughed and Jess elbowed me again.
"He is...
" Incredible? Wonderful? Intelligent..."
"Married. I interrupted."
"In divorce proceedings, according to the Daily Mail.'
I rolled my eyes. Jesse really had a thing for married men.
She went on and on about how hot Rhys was but I was too tired to listen so I left her with a group of girls who were also talking about Rhys and walked off with my drink in the opposite direction of the fuss and whispers.
Leaving the Montrose fan club behind, I started looking at how the rich worked, and boy was it bizarre. The world of high society was more complex than I imagined. Moving between the millionaire groups I heard conversations about bitcoins, shares in the stock exchange, I took a few more steps and soon I heard about a sexual abuse case that was covered up by a supreme court judge last week, more steps forward and I heard about how the Europe was stupid to free the slaves and behead their Kings, after all, in the world there are only two types of people:
The hunt.
And the hunter.
My drunken walk took me to a secluded spot in the club. A place where loud music was nothing more than an annoying noise muffled by the walls. A kind of room, which I didn't hesitate to enter, with a spacious bed that I also didn't hesitate to throw myself on. The sensation of zigzagging between the limit of sobriety and the unconscious attracted me in a unique way, I liked the feeling of walking on a rope, where one wrong step could be fatal.
Even drunk I was acutely aware that I shouldn't be there, and the fact that I was taking off my dress and heels and rolling around in an overly comfortable bed was going to get me into trouble soon, but I just didn't care. I took a step in the opposite direction of sobriety that night.
Damn it. It was the first thing I thought of when I opened my eyes.
I got up from the bed more slowly than I would have liked, the icy wind coming from the balcony reminded me that I was still wearing my bra and panties, I snorted loudly when I touched the plush carpet in the room, I took a deep breath before I got up to get up , but my stay on two legs was brief, as I landed in a sitting position. in bed again. It was obvious that my stupid brain was still too drunk to do the simple task of keeping me on my feet. I huffed again and after the third try I just gave in to gravity and slammed my bare back into the mattress.
“You made the list of things not to do when you're drunk. Congratulations. "
I looked in the direction of the voice and there it was; Rhys Montrose, sitting in the armchair in the darkest corner of the room. Legs crossed as he slowly swirled a glass of whiskey in his hand.
“You found my secret hiding place." He smiled.
“What are you doing here?”
"I was going to ask you the same thing."
I swallowed hard. Sober or not, I was going to get out of there as soon as possible. I gathered all my strength and got to my feet. I gripped the headboard as hard as I could and grabbed my dress off the floor and put it on, grabbed the silver heels and staggered to the door. But it was clear that my knees were still sleeping and forgetting to support me.
Rhys chuckled as he landed on the floor, not caring if I was listening or not.
" What's the fun"
"Other than your dress being backwards and you being so drunk you couldn't stand up?"
“Fuck off. I don't know what you think is going to happen here, but you're wrong."
"Do you know what's going to happen here?" He set his glass on the side table and leaned forward, clasping his hands together. The thick gold ring that rested on her thumb gleamed in the moonlight. “You'll try to get up, take half a step, and fall again. Get hurt and somehow it will end up on the front page of the Daily Mail tomorrow, with my name next to the word attacked.
" What do you want?"
"To help you"
“I don't need your help. And once again, nothing will happen here-"
“If I wanted to do something to you, young lady, I would have done it in the last three hours you've spent passed out and drooling on my bed."
“Fuck you, Montrose."
I leaned against one of the bookshelves and managed to get up.
Panting and unnecessarily sweaty, but on her feet.
I sucked in as much air as my lungs could hold and took the first step, onto my back, looking directly at Rhys. With one step after another I approached the door. I leaned on the handle when I thought I was going to fall, but on impact it broke, but somehow I caught on to the coat rack and I didn't actually fall before Rhys, who jumped up from his chair, came closer. .
With some difficulty I managed to get the door open and glanced at Montrose's stout figure before walking away.

Idk if you ever read spider-gwen/gwen spider-woman, but is her comic storyline similar to her atsv storyline? like to what extent
also i can totally see her character going through the cishet -> noncanon trans icon -> trans icon in modern iterations pipeline
i’ve read some Spider-Gwen! the answer is yes and no.
Spider-Gwen first appeared as a one-off tie in for the comic event Spider-Verse. in the comics, the Spider-Verse storyline is very different to the films, focuses mostly on Pete and not so much Miles, and features Spider-People from across the multiverse being hunted down by a family of Dudes Who Eat Spider-Mans, and a bunch of them eventually team up. some of the tie-in comics for this event are like showcases of different spider-people in their separate universes and artstyles, before shunting them into the main storyline for them to appear as supporting characters. Gwen is one of these, but she was so beloved they eventually gave her her own comicbook title, Spider-Gwen, where we get to see all the cool different things about her universe, like who Captain America is, what Matt Murdock is up to, and what’s going on with venom. She also has pretty regular crossovers with other Spider-People, using technology gained in Spider-Verse. Firstly she mostly hangs out with Jess, who is also quite different in the comics (i like both versions though) and also Cindy, a different Spider-person integral to Spider-Verse. eventually i think she starts crossing over with Miles pretty regularly.
superhero movies basically always try and change major parts of popular storylines to keep legacy fans as interested as people who only ever saw the movies. how EVER, the stuff with Gwen’s universe’s Pete in the Spider-Verse films is basically beat for beat true to the comics too. there will be a lot of crossover there with backstory naturally, but all of that happened before her comic starts and is only really explored in flashbacks.

It's so wild watching old eps I haven't seen in years and years. I tend to rewatch s6 onwards with a few s4 eps for Cas posterity, but i just watched 5x20 and didn't remember a single thing that happened so it was like watching a new ep for the first time (and weirdly like watching a good canonverse fic chapter come to life). Highlights:
Dean and Sam wearing masks giving serious covid19 vibes and Dean thinking his comment about weeping statues won't be heard by the doctor standing right in front of them - because he's talking louder, bc of the mask XD
Crowley rejoins our boys for the first time since he gave them The Colt - the demons ate his tailor! he wants to join forces! iconic lines include: "fancy a fag and a chat?"
Crowley had planted a magic coin in the impala that let him track it and listen to their convos - this is phenomenal fic fodder!
Dean + Crowley's first hunt together! the enemies to allies of it all, the gay jibes from Crowley, the early days of Drowley
I'd forgotten about Brady! he is Pestilence's righthand demon + Sam's old college buddy - he introduced Sam to Jess! he was the one who killed Jess! Jess was baking cookies at the time?!
"Oh, well good for yoooou!" bitchy juvenile Dean i love you so much
Crowley brings his pet hellhound to fight off the one come to hunt them down!
Dean looks So Good this ep?? i've always preferred later seasons Dean but he looks just edible in this
bi!Dean vibes as well as sub!Dean vibes are surprisingly strong with both Crowley and Brady
one of my new favorite scenes: Dean pouring a salt line and stops and looks up at Crowley who stands there waiting. Dean pauses the salt-line and lets him pass. tense eye contact. superb.
Bobby meets Crowley! the soul deal for Death's ring! i honestly forgot this was an apocalypse deal, my only memory of it being from season 6
Crowley's vessel is a moderately successful literary agent
my point is: go back and watch random eps you haven't seen in a while because not only is it a good refresher of characters/lore/plot for meta and fic (and you might find "new" scenes for fanvids or moments to gif) it's also so cool to be watching an old ep with eyes that don't remember that shit so your brain is like: new content!!

National Treasure: Edge of History five man band and the main characters from the movies.
Tasha and Oren are Riley Poole split apart, with Tasha as the tech genius and Oren as the ditz. While I love Tasha and Oren, they are characters I have seen many times before, whereas the reason Riley is so iconic is because he is both the tech genius and the ditz. Tasha and Oren being exes who are probably going to get back together may be an homage to Patrick and Emily.
Jess and Liam are like a mix and match of Ben and Abigail. Jess and Abigail are both immigrants who love and embrace American history. Ben and Liam are dealing with the legacy of being part of treasure hunting families. Ben and Jess are puzzle solving geniuses and Abigail and Liam are the kind of smart person that the audience either is or knows.
I guess Ethan is Patrick because he is less enthused about the treasure than everyone else. It seems his purpose is mostly for the sake of a love triangle (like, if this show were a movie I’m pretty sure Ethan wouldn’t exist and Jess’s mom would still be alive to play the Patrick role). Which is a bummer, not just because I’m not generally a fan of love triangles, but also because I really liked his (now ex) girlfriend Meena. She was sweet and since she was a nurse she could have become the Claire Temple of treasure hunters.

Under the weather so yall know what that means... Whump thoughts time.
In another instance of "making memeable/iconic-but-random/questionable parts of spn's writing into actual angst"
I'm thinking about the mechanics of the whole Ceiling Fire Thing
like is that ever explained? what IS that? why are they stuck to the ceiling? how did they get up there? do we ever actively SEE it happen in canon, or just the aftermath? its a weirdly specific type of attack, only used by Azazel and those working for him. The victim:
-is pinned to the ceiling
-with a (assumedly) fatal slash wound across their midsection
-and then catches on fire, with the fire seeming to radiate out from behind them/from their back, and quickly catching the surrounding ceiling, walls and anything else on fire as well.
-due to crappy cw lighting, I can't quite tell if the victims are conscious for all or any of this.
so I have QUESTIONS. mostly, what the fuck. none of this bears ANY resemblance to standard killings by demons, other princes of hell, or any other type of monster. Is it the wound itself that catches on fire, or the whole person, or somehow the ceiling itself? how is that wound made? It looks like it was inflicted with a blade or claw, but it also clearly doesn't bleed as much as a wound like that should. is the fire hellfire or just magically amplified? does this method of killing serve any purpose besides sending a message? we don't know how long Jess was up there before Sam got home and went to bed, so does the final stage (catching on fire) activate on some kind of timer or set of conditions, like a curse? HOW DID THEY END UP ON THE CEILING?!
...and um. what if
idk
what if Azazel came back via SPN Logic and someone, idk someone REALLY THEMATICALLY SIGNIFICANT, like. Dean. yeah what if Dean ended up getting attacked in that way but (probably due to knowing who Azazel is/knowing how this kind of attack works) managed to avoid the whole "stuck to the ceiling" part and get away. What happens when Dean is running for his life, trying to stem the bleeding from a massive slash wound in his side, feeling the heat spreading from it into the rest of his body and knowing exactly whats happening to him. What about when Sam & Cas find him, either collapsed against the bunker's door, or curled up in an alley somewhere after he didn't come back from a hunt and they went looking for him, delirious from blood loss and a fever that won't stop rising, that keeps rising long after it should have killed Dean.
how long would it take for Sam to figure it out? would the edges of the cut be burning and sizzling, or would it be more subtle? would Dean be nearly dead, and Sam and Cas out of ideas to help him, when the bedsheets underneath him begin to catch fire?
or alternately, what if it WAS obvious. maybe Dean, in his last coherent moments, gasps out that Azazel is back, or maybe as the curse/spell/whatever-it-is worsens, he's flung around the room by some invisible force before being shoved against the ceiling. Is there even a way to cure this?
uhhh anyway yeah. tldr the Ceiling Fire thing has ZERO inherent logic but I WILL whump anything

Vampire Chronicles Book Review/Rant #3
The Queen of the Dammed
Wowowow congratulations to the world’s worst polycule on saving Vampirekind.
Another super fun romp where so much happens, yes there is nonsense, but the nonsense is nicely paired with a lot of intense drama and high stakes. I like how Anne got around her own premise that the vampires are writing their life stories by it still being Lestat who writes it, but he’s gathered all this information from the other vampires that were actually there, even when he was not.
The chapters being mini-stories and the many characters we meet, everything coming together in the end, it’s not just fun but so immersive. Anne doesn’t hold back in expanding her universe. At no point does it feel like too much too soon, or like the universe and characters are expanding faster than the story or getting out of hand. Anne is a fantastic writer.
In this book we start to see the world outside of our main vamps, the fledglings (Killer and the Fang Gang 🤯), the vampire bars, the Talamasca, the vampire cult followers, and so many new characters!
Feminist Icon Akasha (is trying to kill most men). See kids, that’s what happens when you watch TV for 50 years straight.
This is one of my favorite books from the series, maybe one of my favorite books ever.
Favorites:
It’s hard to pick! Jesse’s story is great, the dreamlike drunken nights at Maharet’s house with the vampires asking her about chocolate, the Great Family and the care and love Maharet has for them, her records and her family tree of lights, the attention and advice she gives them all, it’s just so sweet.
Devil’s Minion! I’ve been seeing fan art and posts about Armand/Daniel since I started this blog and did not get it until I read this. Now I GET IT, holy shit, it's chewing-through-drywall material. The horror of Daniel running for his life, being hunted, then suddenly they’re bonding, hanging out and doing all these cool things, Daniel admitting he loves to cuddle a dead thing?! The experiments, the smoothies, the madness from hanging around a vampire, the “I love you too much to turn you” vs “I love you too much to let you go on without me.” Insane. Horrible. Beautiful. I could rant about this section alone for so long. Oh, and learning how the book was published was neat too.
Getting little bits about the twins from everyone’s dreams, that repeating imagery of the cooked body, the heart and the brain on plates. I got really invested in this mystery, and once it all came together it was horrible but so captivating. It’s a great vampire origin story.
Vampire road trip and vampire roommates at Night Island! I wish this part was longer and that vampires could stand to hang out with each other more, I want my vampire friends to hang out damn it! Jesse and Gabrielle became friends! Louis wants to know about his daughter’s ghost! Grandpa Khayman telling stories! Uncle Marius accepting that Lestat is gonna be little shit and no one can stop him!
Least Favorites:
The violence enacted on Maharet and Mekare, I know it’s to show Akasha’s cruelty but damn.
Smutt:
Lestat’s permaboner. Thanks, Anne.
Lestat and Akasha pinning each other back and forth on the bed and drinking from each other was kinda hot tbh.
Armand and Daniel in Pompeii when they start their romance, if you can call it that. Armand making Daniel have sex with other people while he watches 🙈
Nonsense Meter:
4/10 nonsense again. A bit of nonsense in the Devil’s Minion, and a bit in the Lestat training montage/kidnapped by Vampire Mommy part, but not a ton. Maybe it’s a bias because I liked this book so much and every story was full of drama, high stakes, and complex morality.
Misc:
I can’t help but wonder what kind of research Anne was doing, I looked up some of the cities, artifacts, and locations she mentions and it checked out. Was she taking ancient history courses or just living at the library?! Gotta give that woman credit.
I don’t want to get into a long discussion of Akasha’s idea that killing most men would allow women to bring about world peace and fix all our earthly problems, but as someone who has mostly existed as a woman in the world, I may have fantasized once or twice about Thanos snapping a bunch of men, sure, I get it. I don’t agree, I think money, isolation, messed up priorities, and lack of checks in power have more to do with *waves hand around vaguely* everything, but it makes for an interesting premise. “Tell me, my prince, what is the primary use of men now, if not to protect women from other men?”
