actually i dont think ive posted my thoughts on ofmd s2 overall here yet have i?

ok here goes: i think it had incredibly high highs, and at some parts i genuinely enjoyed it more than i did the first season, episode 6 being peak imo. however, it had equally abysmal lows with some glaring writing-, tone- and pacing issues that all came to a head in the finale.

i once read someone say that, if you ever feel like a finale ruined the whole story, maybe you should take another look at the story. there were most likely cracks and problems all along, and the finale did nothing besides dashing the hope that these would perhaps be addressed later. very rarely do genuinely well written stories go completely off the rails in the finale and ruin the whole thing.

i think this is applicable here in some ways, SPECIFICALLY in regards to edward. good god edward was a MESS this season, and it's so sad because i loved the starting point! the kraken era was absolutely terrifying and iconic as FUCK but... they shouldn't have leaned so hard into the drama and trauma of it all. don't get me wrong, i loved that it did. it's one of my favorite parts of the season and i'm so glad we got it. but if they wanted this arc to work with the overarching plot as they wrote it, they would've had to lighten up the tone here CONSIDERABLY. had they played the kraken era for comedy then sure! edward's bad youtuber apology would've been funny. his fast redemption would've been less jarring. the lack of consequences less disturbing. but as it stands in the show, this arc is too dark to function with the later episodes.

i feel like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too here. they wanted the gritty drama of ed coming off the hinges entirely but also didn't want to deal with the aftermath of such a heavy arc in their silly pirate romcom. be that due to time constraints and budget cuts or because they were simply unwilling to, doesn't really matter in the end. the result is the same either way: a very tonally messy season with some accidentally troubling implications regarding abuse.

and mentioning troubling implications regarding abuse; izzy. my poor, poor izzy... his arc was absolutely glorious. i liked izzy the second he showed up in s1 and i was absolutely EATING this season up in that regard. and i think in this case, they genuinely did fuck it all up in the finale with that one stupid choice:

choosing to kill izzy was the DUMBEST thing they couldve done here.

ive talked about this over and over and over again. ive reblogged so many meta posts. and still i am left absolutely flabbergasted by how stupid of a decision this was. the fridging, playing at the fallen woman trope, killing the beating heart of the season and the character who delivers what is essentially a thesis statement, killing off the character whose arc is about coming to terms with his disability, having him die in edward's arms, comforting him and apologizing after an entire season of finding community and love outside of edward, the absolutely godawful pacing of it all, the extremely easy and obvious solution of just having IZZY become the new captain of the revenge to mirror s1 and hammer home how much he has developed since then in one go... i could go on. and i have. it was a stupid writing decision, completely fucked the tone and pacing of the finale and took away attention and time from things that really would've deserved a better wrap up (lucius and black pete deserved better)

now. the whole prince ricky & zheng plot line... yeah that shit sucked ass, sorry. they bit off more than they could chew here. i honestly think those are the arc words of this season:

right off the bat: i think he was good as a concept. bringing in a foil for stede who just doesn't Get It as stede does could've made for very good comedy and drama (and to be fair there is some of that). but that shit got away from them extremely quickly. nothing about how he's implemented past his first episode works, and i think this is very specifically because he's mostly played as the comic relief in his debut episode. making this completely bumbling fool, who gets his nose hacked off on his first job, the main villain of your entire season is... definitely a choice. idk. he didn't work for me at all.

ok wow mentioning shit getting away from the writers. this definitely got away from me. this was supposed to be a short lil post. well. i guess tl;dr i loved this season but jesus christ there was a lot wrong with it. if you want to hear more thoughts. ask box is open. be my guest. i have more to say so even if you dont ask i might add more to this at some point but im tired and have work tmrw.

WHILE ED LOOKED AT STEDE. the whole crew—well not the whole crew. Izzy oh my god fuck man. They gave him the fucking thesis of the show. Our Flag Does Mean Fucking Death 🏳️‍🌈 our love for eachother and the community we’ve built will both outlive and tear down all of the walls that forced us to the margins

The fucking monkey’s paw got me man I was just thinking today about how my initial season 2 predictions ended with Izzy succumbing to his hubris and bitterness and dying for it I DIDNT KNOW. I DIDNT KNOW HOW HE’D TURN IT AROUND! Ah Fuck 😭 gonna try not to think about him at Calypso’s Birthday. He was so happy and at peace with himself. He finally had a real home and a community. He was a good first mate. He was part of the family. He died apologizing for making Ed feel like he couldn’t be loved and assuring him he was with his hand on his face saying ‘there he is’ but this time it’s Ed not Blackbeard 🥺 Rest In Peace darling Unicorn man I did not expect to end up loving you so much <3

but yeah pushing that gutwrenching tragedy aside for a second (wait nevermind actually because I just realized Izzy got shot in the right side aka the one which according to this show’s logic has all the important bits in it FUCK—) the entire crew is back on The Revenge PLUS Zheng and MOTHERFUCKIN SPANISH JACKIE!!!!!!! HOLY SHIT SPANISH JACKIE REGULAR CREW MEMBER POSSIBILITIES NEXT SEASON????? Fuck me even if our hard work doesn’t pan out (#renew as a crew) and we don’t get our third season I could live with this ending. Ed and Stede are happily retired fixing up an inn, they both know they love eachother, the rest of the crew is off together doing their pirate thing but still able to pop back and visit whenever. Though Ricky when they catch you Ricky you son of a bitch istg. Little weasel. Demeans Jackie, tries to wipe out an entire culture because they didn’t let him play pirate, assumes (of fucking course) that a white man is the real power behind Blackbeard’s glory not Ed’s tactical genius and martial skill. Murders Izzy putting a damper on an otherwise badass scene where everyone looks fucking incredible in their fancy matching coats.

I can’t with Our Flag Means Death man. Despite budget cuts and less episodes they fucking did it again. I know I’ve said it before but I seriously cannot understate how much ofmd means to me. What a season, everything I’d hoped for and more from my favorite show <3

Sorry. I am over posting, I know. But I’m thinking about GO and OFMD.

As fun as the romance dynamic is on OFMD, the biggest charm the show holds for me is the crew. I LOVED the fuckery episode. And Calypso’s birthday. I loved Stede and Pete being caged together and Wee John asking if Jim was a mermaid. I LOVED the crew all answering “talk it through as a crew” when Stede was nearly executed- like, I think that is genuinely my favorite part of the show. It warms my heart every time.

And I love Good Omens, but do I love the supporting cast, exactly? Well, depends. I love Muriel. I also love Hastur. And I like the rest fine enough. I don’t really understand why Maggie loves Nina, who is just kind of mean to her, but like, sure. But generally it doesn’t feel like anyone in the supporting cast really like each other (even the Them!). All this to say, Crowley and Azi are the reason I watch GO, no question, no contest. They are the reason GO is my favorite show.

Maybe it’s impossible for two beings who are all alone on their own side to be very close with anyone except the other, but I really hope S3 gives us supporting cast members to fall in love with the way I fell in love with Frenchie and Olu and Lucius, so on, so forth. I want their world to expand. Muriel is a fantastic start. I hope we build on it. I want the coziness of the crew listening to Pinocchio, but in Good Omens somehow.

Soooo OFMD episode 6 thoughts…

I really haven’t processed the scene with Ed and Izzy enough yet to comment the way it deserves

I want to get that as a tattoo “poison into positivity” beautiful line

I love that like the art of fuckery there was a lot of humor until there was a tonal shift ( Stede killing Ned and Izzy battling Stede)

Hm, I really like Ed’s line that killing Ned isn’t worth the poison. Unfortunately he left it open for Stede to take the poison…

Still love that Taika brought his daughters!

I love the entire party scene and I adore that Stede worked it out by being Stede.

Aww the looks Ed and Stede share are so sweet

Honestly, a lot happened in this episode and I like that for how short it is. Kinda amazing

Love the sex marathon with Lucius and Pete…

I wonder if Stede planned to kill Ned or if it was a combination of guilt left over from Chauncey’s words mixed in with his protectiveness of Ed and the crew…Ed doesn’t seem to care at all?

Except for the guilt of letting Stede take the poison of killing him.

Tbh I like the role reversal between Ed and Stede in this episode.

Was part of the reason Stede killed Ned a test to see if it changed how Ed felt?

I want to know why Ed did that little shift after Ned said he likes Stede cause of his “amateur bumbling status”….is he like well true or is he like that’s gonna make him upset or is he thinking that’s not true cause he also does a little headshake (tho that might be to the pet statement) what? I want to knowwwww. I’m excited to see how fanfic authors write this scene!

Stede may have forgotten Jim’s words about killing someone takes a piece of you, huh

I think that the flashback scene of kid Stede was really well done and as some else said, shows that there’s cracks that Stede still has and isn’t as good as he shows. Also considering we have two episodes after 6, it was probably good that David didn’t go into full blown trauma territory or it would have been rushed. I’m one of those that wishes Stede’s trauma was addressed but the way things are playing out it’s better that it’s left to season 3

But Ed’s expression after Stede kills Ned actually kills me, thanks and then when he tries to comfort him

Gosh Izzy was so right to say wait

I can’t even begin to process that sex scene but they both consented and even though it was fast and a bad idea, they both continued it. I’ve got to watch it a few more times to get thoughts in order

Also fang is still my favorite character and I adore him “sore fingies” baby

I may not like this one as much as it’s season 1 counterpart but it’s a solid episode and I liked it

Media I loved last week!

My favorite thing I listened to last week is It's Not Christmas Til Somebody Cries by Carly Rae Jepsen. I feel like most original pop Christmas songs since Mariah Carey's are trying to hard to be a hit and end up boring because of it. Not this one! It's fun, it's catchy, it's not formulaic. Subject matter wise it's more like a punk or alt-rock Christmas song lmfao. I docked it a point just because it is still just a Christmas song, but when compared exclusively to other Christmas songs it's a 10.

My favorite thing I watched last week is the Drawfee show on Youtube. I did watch a Christmas movie with my family, but it sucked lol. Drawfee is a drawing variety show with four very lovely hosts/artists. It's primarily bit drawings, but they also do timelapse episodes where they take more serious prompts as well. Highly recommended! 10/10

My favorite thing I read last week is the OFMD fanfic lavender, for luck by sweatervest. It's a Practical Magic inspired modern AU Sprigg/Hands, in which Pete has an occultism podcast and Lucius convinces him to do some interviews - first of which is Izzy. I really liked it, but I docked it a point because I felt the Ed/Izzy/Jack storyline was wrapped up in a bit of a rush and I think it would have been better done as Izzy telling Lucius about it after the fact rather than trying to make a whole scene of it. 9/10

saw a tiktok the other day about adding your own niche interests to fanfic and that spiraled into an idea for a ofmd modern day birdwatching au. i doubt i’ll ever get around to writing it but here is my general premise and character ideas!!

stede bonnet recently fell in love with birds and is trying to get into birdwatching as a hobby, so he signs up for a bird walk with ornithologist edward teach. here, he becomes even more infatuated with birds, and maybe becomes interested in someone else too, so it’s all too easy to sign up for another walk.

and of course, our beloved crew are also regulars of ed’s bird walks. birdwatching-related shenanigans ensue!

characters:

stede: middle-aged recent divorcee and father of two, looking for something new in his life, saw a cool bird once and fell down the birding rabbit hole after researching it, bought a bunch of nice equipment but doesn’t know how to use it, thinks birds are cool and pretty, knows pretty much nothing else, but he wants to learn!! favorite bird: northern cardinal

ed: ornithologist and big name in the birding world, chair of his local audubon society in his free time, can tell you everything about every native bird in the area, expert at calls and identifying, but is losing the magic that got him to love birds, getting bored, starts up bird walks for the community to try to bring the love back. favorite bird: american crow

izzy: co-leads walks with ed but no one likes him nearly as much, has worked with ed for years, currently doing research with ed, they get along well and work fine together but in the same way a bickering old couple does, really trying to push ed to keep with research even as ed is falling out of passion, feels threatened by stede and everyone knows it but him, does a lot of the organizational parts of the walks and does not get credit for it, gets visibly annoyed whenever stede talks and is very happy to correct stede when he identifies a species incorrectly. favorite bird: great horned owl

lucius: local college student studying environmental science, knows a lot and is chill about it but is silently judging you because you mixed up a song sparrow and house sparrow, dutifully records every species he sees and how many on ebird because Science, stede is friendly with him and lucius is only mildly happy about it but lets him stick around him anyway, always makes sure to point out to stede what he sees, when he isn’t using his binoculars or recording a sighting he is holding hands with pete. favorite bird: yellow-rumped warbler

black pete: goes to walks for ed because he’s a big fan, has read all of ed’s books and mentions it a lot, claims to have studied under ed when he was an undergrad and ed was a professor but can’t really prove it, always stays near the front of the group, gets excited about the birds very easily and is very passionate about birding and lucius is the only one who can calm him down, always shows up in full outdoors gear whether necessary or not, lowkey gets annoyed when people misidentify things but is working on it. favorite bird: belted kingfisher

jim: always shows up with oluwande, quiet, stays in the back and makes quick remarks making fun of people under their breath, only really talks to oluwande, will not tell you what they see until after the fact when it has already flown away, crazy good photographer and can always get a clear shot of the birds, carries around a fancy expensive camera with a huge lens that is their pride and joy, has 50k followers on their bird photography instagram, still wears the big wide-brimmed hat it’s just one of those outdoorsy ones with the string that goes around the chin. favorite bird: green heron

oluwande: always shows up with jim, reluctant mom of the group, scolds you for not wearing bug spray but pulls some out of his bag for you to use anyway, always has a field guide in hand for reference, makes sure everyone is with the group and no one is lost, great bird walk conversationalist, softie at heart but knows how to push jim’s buttons (even though they don’t mind), big on bird twitter for his jokes and for always being the first to report on rare bird sightings in the area, also posts jim’s photography #supportiveboyfriend, always wearing signature orange baseball cap, crocs are his birding shoe of choice no matter the location. favorite bird: mourning dove

frenchie: believes the ivory-billed woodpecker is still out there and will tell you about the time he saw one, has been in local birding circles for years, knows his shit but is nonchalant about it, jots everything he sees down in a notebook and refuses to use ebird or anything similar because it “ruins the sanctity of birding” and he doesn’t trust Big Tech, scared of bugs, big on environmentalism. favorite bird: pileated woodpecker

roach: big into hunting, started going to walks to get better at finding birds to shoot but ends up liking birding more, always has a big hunting knife on his waistband and whips it out anytime he hears a twig snap, makes baked goods for the group and brings them for an after-bird-walk snack, knows a lot about hawks and other birds of prey. favorite bird: turkey vulture

wee john: will hold back low hanging tree branches for you so you don’t get whacked in the head, primary bird interest is ducks, not as interested in songbirds and other smaller species but comes along anyway because he loves a nice walk, generally quiet but is quick with witty remarks, calls all birds he sees no matter what species “tiny baby” or “little lad” or some other term of endearment. favorite bird: wood duck

buttons: almost weirdly knowledgeable and overly passionate about shorebirds, can always find a gull even if they’re somewhere where there should not be a gull, when the walk is near the ocean one particular gull he calls “karl” will find him and sit on his head and no one knows how he does it, never carries binoculars but can always still see and identify the birds perfectly, shows up to walks with nothing but himself but is perfectly fine anyway and is probably one of the best birders in the group. favorite bird: red-billed gull

the swede: beginner but very enthusiastic, not good at birding but absolutely loves birding, can’t remember species names for shit but is great at finding birds and pointing them out, no one likes him but everybody loves him, great at mimicking calls and really wants to show you. favorite bird: common grackle

fang: part of ed and izzy’s research team, besties with ivan, loves birds and birdwatching so much and can’t get enough, loves animals in general, points out other wildlife seen on walks like squirrels and such, always brings bird seed and can get birds to eat out of his hand somehow, you want to walk with him he’s great company, will start crying if he sees something cute. favorite bird: black-capped chickadee

ivan: part of ed and izzy’s research team, besties with fang, lowkey hates izzy but is along for the ride, definitely too experienced to be there but is enjoying himself anyway, has the best birding tips, definitely not afraid to go off path to follow a bird he hears. favorite bird: red-winged blackbird

What the fuck is Izzy’s problem? Is it/should it be fixable?

I mean, it's toxic masculinity, right? Combined with UST? I feel like this show has such a way that I can imagine that they'll figure it out. As a fic author, this is part of why he's constantly spinning in my head like a goddamn fucking rotisserie chicken: I don't know what to do with him. I don't think there's an easy way out, and I'm not at all sure I'm smart or thoughtful enough to find it on my own. (I'm toying with a kind of out there idea, we'll see if it goes anywhere.) I hesitate to say that it's completely unfixable (my fellow fans of The Adventure Zone may be put somewhat in mind of John the Hunger here) but it's a hell of a puzzle, both as a symbol of larger society and for this guy in particular.

What’s your number one wish for season 2 (besides happening at all or couples being reunited)?

This is kind of abstract, but I want to see some kind of symbolic something something that unites some of the symbolism that already exists, that comes to stand for Ed and Stede together. I want this because I want a tattoo but neither the lighthouse nor the kraken quite calls to me, and I have this weird hunch that there will be a synthesis, and THAT is going to be what I want permanently on my body.

That, and Jermaine Clement as a flirty pirate, and/or Beard Stede. But in generally I trust the team to do amazing things. (OBVIOUSLY Lucius has to be alive, that doesn't even count.)

Ofmd rewatch ep 6 the art of fuckery

I know that there is some profound and interesting takes about this episode and any interpretation I could ever have would be probably already said in better words by someone else

That being said

The thing of Ed being the kraken or rather creating it to himself as the monster that killed his father to not feel guilt despite how much his dad was a monster it's really one of the most beautiful plots n the show

His panic attack the actual self hate the way that he says he has no friend the facade of strength and being heartless while craving humanity he asks why stede has a bird guy but made fang put his dog out it's such a duality of his performative strength and violence developed for survival vs actual wish for a softer gentler world he craves to live in

I fucking love him

And I kinda understand Izzy's behavior here going back to violence as a protection if the world stops fearing Blackbeard how well they can truly do for themselves, but also I feel like most of his behavior it is purely a misplaced or misunderstood jealousy (romantic of platonic it is jealousy) and a fear of being left behind

That being said the duel it's one of my favorite scenes as we can truly see Izzy getting erratic out of anger to the point of actually allowing himself to be distracted and eventually losing

I saw a post once saying why people include Ivan on the whole "revenge found family ™" because he isn't really into the whole getting included compared to fang at least and I may say I disagree with this, like there are some scenes showing him being as fed up with Izzy's bs and interacting with the others in the background and also I want him to be part of the found family god damnit.

Lucius finger plot it's disgusting but hilarious and the pay off with the first Lucius/Pete kiss it's lovely

Now some questions:

How many people from Blackbeard's crew are onboard? Cause In the fuckery demonstration there's a lot of shit going on, it's just fang Ivan those two nameless guys I love and Ed?

I'm concerned about the reason of the fuckery, did they just terrified some guys for nothing?

Does wee John counts as a catboy? and if yes can I sexualize him as such?

Overall this episode made me cry fell disgust think about that Front bottoms song -father and laugh about Izzy's bad not good constantly getting worse months

ofmd s1 and character arcs

So a couple days ago I made a twitter thread about the character arcs in ofmd and I’m actually pretty pleased with it, so I’m going to restate the gist of it here:

I think one of my favorite things about ofmd that I haven’t really seen discussed is the amount of development SO MANY characters get through the course of only 10 episodes. The show is extremely character-driven, so it’s not surprising that the characters have so much depth, but beyond that, this speaks to an incredible amount of cohesion between the cast and crew (this is supported in the cinematography and the costuming and probably more), writers, actors, producers, as well as a lot of careful planning from them as a whole creative team. They did something incredible! Nearly every character has specific, concrete, organic narrative growth and that is mind blowing to me! I’ll give some examples.

The one I’ve seen discussed the most is, of course, how Stede and Edward themselves progress towards one another. Stede becomes bolder, more confident, and more competent. Ed let’s himself feel emotions he had previously hidden and to share his thoughts and vulnerabilities. The incredible amount of nuance! They grow to understand one another and help each other be better, more authentic versions of themselves. And then at the end of the season, they are both broken down to the most vulnerable state we have seen either of them in.

In Ep10, they retreat in opposite directions. Edward puts on a harsher version of Blackbeard & hides the new, raw parts of himself away. Stede realizes he couldn’t go back to his old life if he wanted to: he has changed too much. They are both forced to reconcile with this new paradigm and rebuild themselves: Stede with a new sense of self-confidence in his newly chosen life and Edward once again donning a role that has brought him some amount of peace in the past, but now he finds he no longer fits into his Blackbeard role in the same way. He has also changed too much.

One example of Stede becoming more competent is his progression from “Watch my buttons!” in Ep1 to stepping over the ship’s railing easily in Ep7. Not a big deal on its own, but we see him steadily improving in other ways, too: better communication with the crew, learning more about sailing and piracy, using better fighting techniques.

And he’s not the only one! We see Oluwande take on more responsibility and leadership, gaining confidence in himself and in his value as a potential romantic partner with Jim. His caring nature is seen as a strength and the crew appreciates and values his brand of masculinity.

Jim goes from being almost completely closed-off, even to Oluwande, to letting the crew into their head a bit. They have been trained to use violence as the solution to all kinds of problems (and, to be fair, they are VERY good at it), but we see them exercising restraint and working with the rest of the crew towards more nuanced goals.

In Ep1 Pete demonstrates some brash, defensive posturing to seem more tough (he wants the others to see him as a real pirate), but as the series progresses he allows his soft side to come through. He’s affectionate, thoughtful & loving towards not just Lucius but to ALL of them. He trusts and respects the system they have built together on the Revenge.

Lucius is a fantastic character we see a lot as comedic relief, but he steadily becomes more competent in a different way than Stede or the others. We see him grow and find his own place on the ship, interacting with the crew to support their unique emotional needs. He sees his own value as a part of the crew and becomes protective of their emotional well-being.

We don’t see the Swede as much as many of the others, but he also becomes steadily more confident in himself. He explores his emotions through conversations and in his singing. We also see him building a charming rapport with multiple members of the crew in the background.

Roach seems less prone to impulsive violence and more comfortable in his role, supporting the crew in his own way as the chef and resident medical expert (aside from Lucius’s almost-surgery, he also advises them on scurvy in Ep7). The crew members trust him and he is respected for his expertise. He, too, fits in as an integral part of the team.

Buttons becomes... more himself. He was already a very competent sailor, shown to be eccentric from the beginning, but the crew grows to appreciate him more for his oddities. They stand up for him, mourn with him at the loss of Karl and don’t bat an eye at his... wardrobe choices. He keeps them all on track, in his way.

We didn’t get to see as much of Wee John in the second half of the season, but I think of him as sort of the barometer for the temperature of the crew as a whole. He says what the rest of them are thinking! He was the one to say their first raid was a disgrace, he called out the lack of a flag, and he answered Stede’s question about talking it through... and all of that was in Ep1! He starts as a bit of a loner, but we see him become more emotionally open (even by the end of Ep1 when he talks about Pinocchio pulling it off). By the end, he cohabits thoughtfully with Frenchie, negotiating his own needs and listening to Frenchie’s as well. He is kind & thoughtful towards the crew members, stands up for Stede in Ep9 & is even stands up to Izzy in Ep10.

I love Frenchie. He seems more relaxed than many others initially, but he also gives off an air of world-weariness (rocky and flat and rocky and flat). He makes silly mistakes, but he is also very smart, showing that formal education isn’t synonymous with intelligence or worth. We see multiple examples of how Frenchie is extremely perceptive, able to think & act quickly. He is somewhat cynical at the beginning, more than familiar with the corruption of the upper class and with human nature, but it seems to be that changes as we progress. He seems lighter. Maybe he is starting to trust those around him. Maybe he sees some good in the world after all...

We don’t get as much time with Ivan and Fang, but we still see them become more fully fleshed-out characters. They could easily have been generic muscle, but they both demonstrate kindness and a growing affinity for the original crew of the Revenge. Discontent with Izzy’s leadership in Ep9, by the end they have really bonded with a lot of the crew.

And Spanish Jackie grows in an interesting way: she starts out as a comedic antagonist and first goes in a darker direction with the plot against Stede, but then ends up helping Jim refocus on what’s important to them instead of blind revenge. Fascinating for a relatively small side character!

Mary grows from being resentful and frustrated with her situation and her husband’s role in her life into a complex person with independent wants and needs. One of my favorite scenes is between Mary and Stede in Ep10 when they are finally seeing each other fully and communicating in a healthy way!

Even the English hostages have a little character arc! They got to see Stede be a decent person from the inside of the ship. He treated them with dignity as hostages (when he remembered) and they got to witness his leadership style where he took input from the crew and redirected them respectfully when needed. And then in Ep9, when it came to the Act of Grace, they were very cautiously on his side. They did their duty with just a little more leniency than was necessarily warranted. The crew fielded a ridiculously flimsy defense (he stole a plant? Good enough for us!) and yet they declared it settled.

And then there’s our favorite love-to-hate-him character, Izzy. Israel Hands clearly has depth, but it’s hard to parse exactly what’s going on with him. Everyone else is moving towards a more open, kind and collaborative version of themselves but Izzy digs in his heels. Instead of forging his own path and becoming his own person, he becomes obsessed with holding onto the past. He ties himself to Blackbeard’s fate (notably NOT Edward’s, but Blackbeard’s). Izzy sees the changes in Edward as being dishonest to the Blackbeard he’s always served. He even says it’s a fate worse than death. One of the biggest changes we see from Izzy is his waxing & waning trust of Ed as a person. He wants to trust him in his role as Blackbeard, but he’s obviously struggling to do so. We see him use the name Edward at the beginning, before either of them were separating the two. And then Izzy transitions to using Blackbeard whenever he can. Maybe to remind everyone who Ed is supposed to be. Unfortunately, Ed himself feeds into this mess by not only keeping Izzy around, but asking him for help and expressing how much he is still needed. And maybe Izzy takes that to mean he needs to help save Ed from himself.

There was only one instance I can think of where a character felt like they regressed narratively for a joke (Stede) and I’m half convinced that will come back in the future and turn out to be relevant again. This was in Ep7 when Stede blames Roach for the mismanagement of citrus, which felt like a step backwards in terms of team building and how Stede has been good at taking ownership of his mistakes, but I think it might also speak to a larger issue regarding Stede’s self confidence, his potential sensitivity about food, and his own body image, which other people have already discussed in quite a lot of detail.

All told, I appreciate this show SO MUCH for giving us so much depth in just 10 episodes. Just imagine what they could do with 10 or 20 more.

Okay, so hear me out, but I’m gonna start by giving a big thank you to @doubleappled for this one. You said you were tagging anyone who hadn’t gotten around to doing this yet, and I happen to be one of those, so I took that message to heart. Haha! I’d secretly been wanting someone to tag me in this for awhile, but it hadn’t happened yet, and I finally decided fuck it, I’m just gonna do it myself. I’ve not written in months because of this weird illness I’ve been dealing with, and I’ve been wanting to go through my WIP to kind of...try to get myself back into it? So here goes.

Like Fathers, Like Sons - A mid hook up Ron and Draco (post divorce, no infidelity here) walking in on a mid hook up Scorpius and Hugo.

Support - Oh my god, you guys, this one is annnnnciiiieeennnttt. I’m pretty sure I started writing it directly after my very first fic posted to AO3, like holy shit. The title is a redemption for me on a fic I wrote at 15 (which still exists on FFN, and also just so happened to be a Dron as well, but please don’t bother looking it up, haha). Lucius was assassinated in Azkaban post-war, and there’s a death threat out on Draco. Auror!Ron is assigned as his body guard during the weeks surrounding the investigation and his father’s funeral.

The Measure Of It All - a crack fic about Ron’s huge cock
