Couldn't stop thinking of 18th century Howl and Sophie going to the market but Howl insists on wearing his favorite jacket that will make him severely overdressed. And Sophie is like you can’t wear that to the market! And Howl gets upset and they bicker. Also Heen is there. 😂

Eeeee!!! I get to wear the PRETTIEST dress at work now :D I’m not sure exactly what era it’s replicating inside the 1800s but looks like it’s inching closer to 1820/1830s than early 1800/1810s and it’s DIVINE.
It’s got the ✨swoosh✨, it’s got the sea foam green with the stripes, it’s got the poofed shoulders…mega heart eyes

Downton Abbey Fashion 1 - Edwardian mourning dresses
I have finally decided to stop planning into infinity and just start posting my collected thoughts on the fashion of Downton Abbey on my blog. So, this is the first in what will probably be a rather long series of posts, as I will separate them by season, sometimes by character, and in cases like today's by the purpose of the clothes in question. Nevermind my occasional snarky comments about the characters; I'm here for the fashion, not for the writing choices in Downton Abbey. Keep in mind that I will focus on the female characters because... frankly, I think Edwardian and onwards is the time when Western menswear gets supremely boring. And also, the vast majority of what I'm talking about here is high fashion. I will have a look at some of the servants' dresses, but their wardrobe is limited and they rarely get the prettier pieces of the cake. Shame.
Let's start with Season 1, which plays from April 1912 up to the beginning of the World War in the summer of 1914. And our dear Crawleys start the series in an exceptional situation regarding fashion - they are in official mourning (to Mary's resentment, but we'll get to that). Accordingly, four of Violet’s prominent 11 outfits in the first season (11? Wow, they sure blew up the dress budget later on…) are mourning outfits. Maybe three, because one of those is a heavy black coat and she wears it outside of mourning, too, but I think the character of Violet actually premiered in this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it rarely is seen in a light that does not make it look like a flat black blob. But that velvet is actually gorgeous (and might be dark blue instead of black? I dunno, it would be typical for movie outfits). And the sleeve decoration (those aren’t cuffs; they are like in the middle of the sleeve instead of at the hem) as well as the collar show actually some embroidery. There’s not much to be said for the structure – except for the shoulders, and these shoulders? Are very Victorian. Those are late 1890s’ shoulders. Yeah, the series starts out in 1912 and goes well into the mid-1920s, but to be honest, Violet’s fashion never quite gets there. Good on her for sticking to those lovely buttons and the fabulous hats!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of 1890s, the sleeves on this evening dress are even a few years older than the previous coat. The giant poofy sleeves are somewhere around 1893, I think? Give or take a year or two; sleeve fashions throughout the 1890s were highly specific, and I can’t remember every year’s specialty. They aren’t as structured as I would expect; perhaps that is Violet’s concession to the times. The silhouette certainly isn’t. Also interesting: In the first picture, Violet is visibly wearing her wedding ring. Huh. She’s been a widow for a while, and afaik her marriage was, while harmonic, not exactly passionate. So maybe she keeps wearing it as a part of her “duty and reputation above everything” mentality.
Tumblr media
I first couldn’t distinguish this dress from the former and threw them in together – same sleeves, same silhouette, same neckline with a translucent bit closing up in a choker. But no, the bodice front isn’t as heavily embroidered, the lower sleeves are see-through. It also doesn’t seem to be employed as an evening gown, if the comparatively light bling is anything to go by. I like the fabric though; I think it may be taffeta.
Tumblr media
See what I mean about the comparatively light bling? This dress here? Is very definitely an evening dress. It’s practically nothing but blackwork, the whole top is encrusted with rhinestones, the sleeves and gloves are both made of lace. This is the height of fancy that Violet can do in official mourning. And it barely toes the threshold to the 20th century. Now, granted, the high neck and the pigeon chest are still a thing throughout the 1910s, but the dresses slim down by that time. This looks massive and opulent. For as long as the rest of the family looks Edwardian, Violet’s dresses will have a distinctly Victorian feel to them. She’ll dabble in Edwardian fashion by the time the others have moved on to the Roaring 20s…
--------------
I’m already getting bored of the black (Mary attitude? Not on this blog, I don’t). This time around, it’s Cora! Three mourning dresses out of a total of 20 notable outfits in the 1st season, that’s not a bad rate. Can’t wait to get to her gorgeous coats.
Tumblr media
Speaking of coats. Look at this, and directly compare it to Violet’s first black coat. Granted, you could make a point for the structured Victorian shoulders. But the coat itself is way slimmer, not the wide thing Violet is wearing, but something that’s cut into shape and actually shows off Cora’s figure, including a lack of chest poof. Pigeon chests haven’t died out until the late 1910s, I think, but I don’t see it on Cora. That may be because Elizabeth McGovern has such a dainty figure and they wanted to show that off, so she’s very on top of the fashion for now. A shame that the picture doesn’t lend itself to a closer look at embroidery, but I applaud Cora’s endeavor to try and keep up with Violet’s massive hats.
Tumblr media
That’s more like it! A house dress, this isn’t trying to drown Cora; it’s showing her off. I mean, it’s modest; it is a mourning dress with a high neck and all, but she looks nice in this. Early 1910s fashion dresses her well! I’m not sure how I feel about that giant pendant thing on her necklace (actually, I do; I hate it), so we’ll just ignore that and look at the dress instead. This rectangular sort of frame that the lace bands form on her chest is something that appears on a ton of late Edwardian lingerie dresses (it’s not sexy underwear; the term means a usually white summer dress for something like strolls in the garden, covering everything, but very lightweight and comfy in warm weather). Now, this mourning dress is of heavier material than those; it’s definitely made to look more severe. But the decoration elements, the narrow sleeves, the high waist, that’s pretty similar. Also, that dangly beads bit on her belt? That seems to evoke the kind of playful design that’ll dominate the 1920s.
Tumblr media
Cora is still owning the Edwardian fashion with black tulle, and I really enjoy looking at these sleeves. I wouldn’t enjoy wearing them; the swishy fabric would keep irritating me. But tops partially made of tulle are kind of a thing for Cora’s early evening dresses, so this is some of the most skin she shows – even in mourning. I mean, the long gloves are mitigating that a bit, but the wide neckline with the delicate lace leaves space for some heavy jewelry. And that is old-fashioned, 19th-century jewelry; look at those clunky cabochons.
--------------
Mary infamously established her character by complaining about having to go in mourning because black is so dull. Which is not only the first instance in a series of remarkably tactless behaviors; it’s also hilarious. Aside from maybe Violet, the Dowager™, Mary’s gotta be the protagonist who wears the most black, even outside of mourning. But alright, chickie; keep your attitude. For this season, it’s three of 21 outfits for this particular purpose.
Tumblr media
Call me a contrarian, but I think Edwardian fashion isn’t terribly flattering for Mary the Fashion Queen of Downton Abbey. This is what she’s wearing for the memorial service for her cousin, and I dunno, the waist seems to make it one of the outfits that work the least in favor of Michelle Doherty’s lanky figure. In all fairness, she slays as soon as we hit 1920. It’s still a high-quality outfit, don’t get me wrong. Simple cut, I’m a fan of the white details, the hat is lovely. I’m actively appalled by the handbag though. Wasn’t this the time before reasonable pockets died out?? I feel betrayed.
Tumblr media
A bored look and an evening dress, if that isn’t a Mary vibe. Also, evening garb is time to show some skin, and what I find interesting is that, different than her mother and grandmother, she’s wearing costume jewelry. It’s a good fit to the netting / lace with rhinestones her dress is made of (going with the principle of simple cut, intricate material), but I didn’t know it was a thing before 1920s’ art deco. Huh.
Tumblr media
Fancy black lace there! I like it. The dress cut is more fitted than the previous, and again, I’m not a great fan of Mary wearing Edwardian. But maybe it’s the wide round or square necklines? Mary usually goes for Vs during most of the season. Ah, well. She sure combines her jewelry well with tulle.
--------------
Edith, my girl. They’re doing her looks so dirty this season. This was when she was still the ‘plain’, ‘shrew’ sister. And then, Mary also peed on her for genuinely grieving her cousin. How dare she.
Tumblr media
Her memorial service dress, and instantly I go “she’s wearing this better than Mary does hers in the same scene”. And it’s not because she doesn’t have Michelle Dockery’s wide shoulders; it’s because in her case they don’t try to compliment a tall, flat figure with a cut that isn’t made for it. There’s more material on chest and waist here, bunching up in a way that Edwardian blouses often did in the tail end of pigeon chest fashion. I really like the hat, full set with feathers, bow, and tulle veil, as well as the collars of both the blouse and the jacket… wait a second, is that a handbag??
Tumblr media
Another dress with a lot of blackwork on the top to a simple skirt, and I’m here for it. I wish they would allow her a decent hairdo, but we gotta dress her down somehow, because that nice necklace sure isn’t gonna do the job. In comparison to Mary’s and Sybil’s black evening dresses this season, this looks unassuming and understated, but the cut dresses her well, and the lack of bling on the dress itself allows the necklace to pop nicely. Maybe too nicely, because the next one is a mess.
Tumblr media
I wonder how often they had to tell Laura Carmichael throughout the first season to pull this face, not to smile her natural smile (which is gorgeous), and to press her chin down to make it look less defined. Because… she is a beautiful woman, and they didn’t want Edith to look beautiful. They let an unflattering hairdo and a bad posture do the job. Or a dress like this that is made of tulle and lace and all fancy, but looks like it doesn’t fit her. Why does this fit so badly? The sleeves, the uneven V on the front, it’s all over the place. Something went really wrong with the layering here.
--------------
Last batch of first season’s mourning dresses, for Sybil! The youngest Crawley daughter is a genuine sweetheart, different than Mary, and she holds the writer’s favor, different than Edith, so she’s consistently dressed to look pretty and charming and girlish.
Tumblr media
On that matter, I envy her that jacket. Look at the lapels and the buttoned front! Shame we don’t see too much of this outfit; the focus of the scene is on Mary being nasty to Edith for having emotions. But I love the structured fabric they used for the framing. Interesting that she gets away with a brown ribbon around the hat; it's not like they couldn't swap those (and Sybil does a few times over the course of her runtime with other hats).
Tumblr media
Not the greatest look at the dress, but it’s the best I got… Doesn’t Sybil just have lovely hair? With Edith, they use these kind of curls or buckles to both sides of her face to make her hairdo look unbalanced, but with Sybil, they went for cuteness and a young look, so she gets her hair tied up in the neck instead of an updo – I’m pretty sure Sybil is only 18 here. The top of her dress seems to be layered lace, if I look at the back of this. And the sleeves are gorgeous!
Tumblr media
Different dress, different jewelry! The previous one went for costume jewelry, but this pendant is at least made to look like real. And that giant hairbow! Sybil looks inappropriately chipper for mourning time; I keep expecting her to bounce over flowery meadows. And she gets more lovely lace sleeves.

I think the things that offend me most nowadays in like, smaller interpersonal interactions rather than grand, sweeping trends in culture, are when people chose to not partake in a wide set of things. Like musical close mindedness, or refusal to try different foods from different cultures. Not watching an entire subset of films bc they’re ‘french’. Avoiding reading bc you say you have adhd and it’s too hard. Like dude I get it, I’m busy. I can be picky. Everyone can. But the willful ignorance of closing yourself off to those VAST portions of the human experience, and not having curiosity and a lust to learn and explore art that was made by someone worlds apart from you either in terms of their culture, era, whatever. I dunno man it just pisses me off so bad. I think it’s arrogant. Like oh you’re comfortable in your safe little bubble huh? And you’re enforcing its barriers with the excuse that you’re autistic and have sensory issues. With music made by black people?? lol okay. It is pretty presumptuous for me to assume malicious intent but I think those prejudices are borne from either the comfort of being someone who’s wealthy and probably white not feeling the need to learn past what they think is enough, or it’s a reflection of a society that’s taught you to prioritize what it shills— popular, current (white, depending where you live ig) artists who are making streamlined, easy to digest content. Often when I meet people with these issues they’ll have one particular ‘niche’, and it tends to be like. 70s music. Victorian literature. Anime and Japanese games. But they’re still not really investing beyond the media presented. Like there’s so much more to Japanese culture than liking some cartoons put out between 2010-2020. You don’t gotta become some sorta Einstein who learns the background of every little freak in FGO yeah. But don’t you wanna aim higher? Aren’t you interested in any of the historical figures? And nothings wrong with hopping onto a trend. You read Dracula bc of that Dracula daily thing. Cool! Read more. Some people will say they’re chronically ill or disabled and can’t get outside. That’s okay. The internet is full of things you can read other than fanfiction, YouTube has a shit ton of free music. There’s Wikipedia and free articles online if you have questions about things. Yeah nobody is spending four hours a day looking at the national archives website and studying art history but it’s imbued in the things around you, and youll absorb it ambiently as you go along. you dont have to be a jack of all trades and cover every major genre of every major medium, but it never hurts to try! I really love seeing ppl ask too. Bc it can be kind of humiliating to admit to what seems like some jackass hipster that you’ve never delved into, idk, Serbian films (lol not that one). And hopefully if whoever you’re asking will give you honest good recommendations and not berate you. I’m kind of berate a straw man rn I guess. The hostile tone def doesn’t lend to an atmosphere of sharing but I cannot tell you how many times I’ve rbed anything involving specifically jazz only to see someone rb and add the stupidest comment on the post, or in the tags, or go into my inbox to be like waaah I don’t like jazz bc it’s boring and old and for pretentious hypocrites who hate neurodivergent people! Like what are you TALKING about. Fine if you don’t like it but don’t try and rationalize that as a moral standing you shit lark. And just as they’re allowed to dislike jazz I’m allowed to not really enjoy people who don’t like jazz. Or country. Nautical knots. Knit wear. Watching urbex YouTubers get their shit rocked by squatters. Korean food. Pachuco fashion and stupid ugly low riders. Bollywood films. and they don’t want to try any of those things either yknow? The next thing I’m getting into is circuit bending.

Sanderstober 2023
Upon request, I’ve provided new art prompts for this year’s month of October!! As always, feel free to do all or some of these, pick and choose whichever stands out to you! If you missed a day’s prompt but still wanted to do art for it, absolutely do that and post it whenever you want, no worries whatsoever. It’s all completely laid back and just for fun! I’ve added to this list without consulting old ones, so if I used a repeat idea, it’s possible that I just was interested in seeing more of it again this year!! Hope you all enjoy! If you’re wanting me to check them out at all, you can use the tag, #Sanderstober2023 🎃
Oct. 1st: Give me a spooky or Halloween-y figure and how he looks on Sep. 30th (their off-time, go as comical as you’d like) and then how they look Oct. 1st (traditionally how they are known to look!).
Oct. 2nd: Give me a flower design inspired by a type of candy of your choice!
Oct. 3rd: In celebration of the awesomeness that is Fionna and Cake, I’d love to see you take a character, or characters from your fave series, and give them a multiverse makeover (what they’d look like in a different universe, under different circumstances)
Oct. 4th: Take any historic landmark, and give it an autumn or Halloween-y makeover
Oct. 5th: Since I’ve been on my D&D kick with Roleslaying with Roman, what would any Halloween- or spooky-themed character be in a D&D world? What would be their race? Their class? Their backstory??
Oct. 6th: Google a Random Color Generator and use it to give you three colors. Then use those three colors to create a new Halloween creature or character.
Oct. 7th: Along the lines of Spiderman Noir, take any character you want from some sort of fiction, and depict how they might look like in any other time period!
Oct. 8th: In the spirit of having fun with both Halloween AND Christmas, take a Halloween story/character and draw what they might appear as if they were actually a character talked or sung about in a Christmas story.
Oct. 9th: Take a group of characters from one of your favorite pieces of content and create tarot cards featuring them. Google tarot cards to get inspiration if you need!
Oct. 10th: Take a musical (one that I would suppose wouldn’t already be scary) and create a poster for it as if it were the title of a scary movie
Oct. 11th: Google a Disney character generator, pick out two characters, and create what a mash-up of those two characters would look like!
Oct.12th: Pumpkin spice latte obviously has its spotlight during the fall, but could you come up with another special coffee concoction for another season/holiday of the year?
Oct. 13th: Take a Fall/Halloween concept or character and use it as inspiration for a fashionable outfit
Oct. 14th: As a tribute to Barbenheimer this year, take any character from Barbie or Oppenheimer and depict how they’d appear in the other movie
Oct. 15th: Take the last text you received. Use all or part of it to base a whole movie off of it of any genre, and create a poster for it
Oct. 16th: Take one of the names of your current pet, old pet, or friend’s pet, and use that name as the inspiration for a superhero. What would that superhero look like?
Oct. 17th: Is there a phrase that one of your parents or friend says all the time? Take it and imagine it’s the name of a children’s book. What would that children’s book cover look like?
Oct. 18th: Take a Disney villain, and depict them as a Disney princess
Oct. 19th: Take a Disney Princess and depict them as a Disney villain!
Oct. 20th: Take any Greek god and imagine what their preferred activity might be on an average Fall day.
Oct. 21st: Take a board game (one that I would suppose wouldn’t be scary) and create a poster for it as if it were the title of a scary movie
Oct. 22nd: This is an annual favorite of mine - take take any character(s) from a piece of content of your choice and depict them like a Tim Burton character
Oct. 23rd: Take a famous brand logo (Toyota, Playstation, Campbell’s Soup, Facebook, literally any logo from anything) and design a Pokemon inspired by the logo and color palette! Bonus for naming it and giving it stats!
Oct. 24th: In the spirit AGAIN of having fun with both Halloween AND Christmas, now take a Christmas story/character and draw what they might appear as if they were actually a character talked or sung about in a Halloween story.
Oct. 25th: Another favorite of mine: take any character(s) from a piece of animated content you enjoy, and draw them in the style of another piece of animated content!
Oct. 26th: Go to the latest playlist you were listening to, put it on shuffle, and see what song it plays. Take the title of that song and use it as inspiration for a Halloween/Autumn themed drawing of your choice.
Oct. 27th: Take a favorite pair of characters from a piece of content you enjoy and depict what their matching Halloween costumes would be!
Oct. 28th: [Random event from this past year] … and Zombies!!
Oct. 29th: Every town’s got some local businesses with interesting names (Jerry’s Tire Barn Emporium, stuff like that). If you know of one in your local town, take that name, and imagine it to be the name of a Haunted House. Depict what that location may look like. I wanna learn about some funny local business names.
Oct. 30th: Take one item from your desk/workspace, anything you want. This item is now the inpiration of a brand NEW cryptid (like Sasquatch, Loch Ness, El Chupacabra, just some legendary creature we have yet to find hard evidence of). Depict what this cryptid would be!
Oct. 31st: And, of course, in typical fashion for the big day, give me any character(s) of your choice, from any piece of content, enjoying Halloween in whatever way seems appropriate to them!!
Hope you all have a WONDERFUL October! And hope you enjoy these different art ideas! Looking forward to anything it may bring about!

I love Jane Austen's work and I love podcasts, so naturally I follow several JA podcasts (please drop recs in the tags). I'm enjoying Live from Pemberley from Hot and Bothered, but a comment from literally the first episode of the series has been circulating in my brain since I listened to it several months ago: one of the hosts expressed surprise (and disappointment?) in the fact that when we first meet Lizzy, she is "employed in trimming a hat". This comment literally comes right after a conversation about how Austen tells us so much in the very short space of Chapter 1; without wasting any words, we know exactly who Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are (lightly toxic relationship), understand their family situation (need to marry well), meet the main driver of the first act (rich man in the neighbourhood), and understand a social dilemma (girls can't meet him if Mr. Bennet does not make the first overture). So what is Austen telling us when we meet Lizzy in the employment of trimming a hat?
We so often read a sort of modern girlboss feminism into Lizzy because she is smart and stands up for herself, but I think that's something that really gets embroidered on to the text. Lizzy trimming a bonnet is telling us several things about her:
She is frugal - new hats and bonnets are really expensive (my casual hobby is shopping for reproduction bonnets and this remains true), because the straw is braided by hand, the bonnet shape is assembled and blocked by hand, feathers have to be gathered from real (living or dead) birds, ribbons and flowers are hand-finished, the whole situation is fuck expensive. Lizzy is most likely putting new trim on a straw or wool bonnet she already owns to make it work better for this season's fashions, or a new dress, and possibly recycling trimmings from other hats. Contrast this with Lydia's spending all her pocket money on an ugly hat in Chapter 39, just so she can reduce it to parts, even though she acknowledges she'll also have to buy some extra satin too, to finish the project.
She cares about fashion - we don't get a lot of information on sartorial choices in Austen's work, and when characters are discussing fashion, it tends to be a framework for explaining something about their characters; Miss Steele's need to know how much Marianne's dresses cost (rude, crass); Mrs. Bennet's loving description of the lace on Mrs. Hurst's gown (shallow); Catherine Moreland's agonizing over what to wear to the Assembly (young, a bit flighty); Bingley wears a blue coat (has probably read The Sorrows of Young Werther, is fashionable). The fact that Lizzy is trimming a hat tells us she is fashionable, but paired with the fact that she will get a petticoat muddy in order to see her sister, and does not spend a lot of time worrying after fashion like Lydia tells us that she does not live and die on fashion.
She is creative - I've trimmed various hats and bonnets over my years of interest in historical fashion and honestly it's not easy. It's quite fiddly to get a nice ribbon edge, a ruched lining takes forever, and getting sprays of florals and feathers to be nicely shaped and all in a complementary palette is quite fussy. Getting a nice looking bonnet requires some thinking and planning. But it's also great fun! The Regency era is, in my opinion, a particularly good period for hats.
She is normal - I think Austen wants the reader to understand that Lizzy is a young woman with normal cares and concerns. She doesn't have cash for a new bonnet, she wants to look nice, she knows how to put an outfit together, she's not frivolous like her sisters, and she engages in the typical pursuits of someone who is not yet one and twenty who does not have a specific occupation.
A lot of modern readers are expecting Lizzy to be striding around the countryside unconcerned with "girly" things, or reading a clever book because we have come to think of her as proto-feminist in a way that suggests she might be a bra (corset) burner, but I think that comes from an outdated feminist lens that still wants to tell us that girly things are bad, or at least, a bit weak, and I don't see that in the text at all (I think some of this trickles over from the adaptations). Lizzy walks enthusiastically, she enjoys reading (but not to the exclusion of other employments), she dances very well and plays with mediocrity, she cares deeply about her friends and family, she has excellent manners, and dammit, she trims hats.

Lead Us to Temptation- Masterlist
Tumblr media
Summary: In the small town of Eden Ridge, you knew several things to be true: church happened every Sunday, the saloon served free lunch with the purchase of a drink on Thursdays, coal miners left work at 7PM sharp, and Bucky Barnes was a man sent from the depths of hell dangling the threat of temptation and sin right in front of your face. All you need to do is reach out and grab it.
Pairing: Outlaw!Bucky Barnes X Reader
Warnings: Cowboy/western/outlaw AU, religious themes, Midwestern Gothic, dark themes, guns, violence, misogyny, crass language, alcohol, smoking, explicit content, mature content, overall mature themes. The story takes place a little further north than the typical wild west setting because I am a Midwestern girl at heart. Bucky is going to be 10 years older than reader (i am trying not to use Y/N). The time line is the late 1880s/1890s. As always my reader is most likely plus sized/curvy. If you see any Red Dead Redemption references no you didn't
DNI if you are under 18 or if these themes upset you.
Read me on AO3
A/N: Well howdy there folks! Isn't it crazy when you say you're going to retire from writing fanfictions and then are possessed to write one? Anyways I'm back and better than ever and I hope you all enjoy the ramblings of someone who is terminally H word if you know what I mean. As always, likes and reblogs are immensely appreciated. There will be no tag list because i am far too lazy to do that, but feel free to turn on notifications for me or bookmark it on AO3 where it will also be posted per usual. Also I'm sorry if its not 100% historically accurate, I'm doing a lot of research in fashion and what not but at the end of the day I'm just a girl. The tag to find this in my blog will be #LUT

This is for East Asian hairstyles in general but idk where else to ask this(and this does include traditional Chinese fashion): How much of women’s (or men’s though I would guess mostly women) hairstyles was composed of wigs? Feel free to just answer this in relation to Chinese hairstyles specifically if answering for any others deviates too much from the blog purpose.
Hi! Thanks for the question, and sorry for taking ages to reply!
Tumblr media
Historically, it was quite common for Chinese women to use wigs to create their hairstyles, as many historical hairstyles were not meant to be done with real hair -- although I don't know the specific percentage of women who did so. Wigs became prevalent in China starting from the Spring and Autumn period (771-476 BC) when they were popularized by upper-class women, and were widely used by women until the 20th century, when hairstyles became simpler. Wigs could be made from real human or animal hair, other fibers, paper, or wood.
The following posts/links discuss wigs in Chinese history in more detail, please check them out!:

Chinese traditional hairstyles & hairpieces by National Clothing
As for men, they typically put their hair into a bun and encased it in some kind of covering (cloth, hat, cap, headdress), so there was no need for them to use wigs. However, as I explained in this post, some men would insert a wig/towel/other material inside their hat/cap to give it more structure.
To this day, wigs/hairpieces/extensions are necessary and commonly used in creating traditional Chinese hairstyles.
For more information and references, please see my wigs tag for all posts related to wigs and hairpieces.
If anyone has more info on this topic, please share! ^^
Hope this helps! (image via)

FFSU’s Fan Fashion Week!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*ETA: Works posted to AO3 can be tagged as "FFSU Fashion Week"!*
I’ve had the concept for this in my head for AGES but never got around to posting it. I originally planned to run it as an event during a certain time period, but I found that making it an event intimidated me out of actually making the idea happen. I just think that I’m a lot more confident in my ideas when I don’t overthink it! Therefore, instead of running an event, I’m just putting this challenge out into the atmosphere for people to take it and run with it.
REBLOGS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Everything you need to know is in the graphics, and here’s a plain text version as well:
Fashion For Stand Users’ Fan Fashion Week Challenge: a 7-day art and/or fic-writing challenge!
Art Prompts:
- Day 1: Runway
Draw your chosen character(s) in an outfit from a designer runway! Check the blog archive or Vogue Runway for references and modify the look however you want.
-Day 2: Subculture
Draw your chosen character(s) in the fashion of a certain subculture: goth, raver, scene kid, etc.
-Day 3: Style Swap
Draw two or more characters swapping their canon outfits, or simply wearing outfits more suited for the other person's vibe and aesthetic.
-Day 4: Historical
Draw your chosen character(s) in the fashion of another era.
-Day 5: Redesign
Redesign, reinvent, or modify the canon outfit(s) of your chosen character(s).
-Day 6: Formal
Draw your chosen character(s) in gowns, tuxedos, and other fancy clothes.
-Day 7: Free Space
Draw any kind of outfit(s) you'd like for your chosen character(s)!
Writing Prompts:
- Day 1: Character Study
Write about why a character dresses or looks the way they do. Why do they like the clothes they wear? Do they wear something with personal significance? How do they want the world to see them?
-Day 2: Makeover
Write about a character getting a makeover from another. Are they getting new clothes, a new hairstyle, new makeup? Is it just for fun or a sign of a bigger change?
-Day 3: AU
Write about an alternate universe where the characters are models, fashion designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, etc.
-Day 4: Disaster
Write about something going horribly, horribly wrong: wardrobe malfunctions, makeup mishaps, over/underdressing, etc.
-Day 5: Shopping Trip
Write about characters going shopping together and all the shenanigans that ensue.
-Day 6: The Event
Write about a character getting ready for  or attending an upscale event. Who are they going with? What are they wearing? How are they feeling?
-Day 7: Free Space
Write about any scenario you'd like, as long as it's about clothing or fashion!
Rules:
Have Fun!
This is obviously a JJBA blog, but feel free to use this challenge for OCs and other fandoms! If you plan to modify the prompts, make different graphics, or make your own version of the challenge for a different fandom, be sure to credit this blog or link back to this post!
Mention @fashion4standusers in all your posts to give credit! You can also tag your posts with #ffsufashionweek, and if your work is about JoJo, I would love to share it on the blog. If you post outside of Tumblr, include a link to this post!
Don't think you can do it in a week? Want more time to write longer fics, make more detailed art, or just develop your idea more? No worries, just work at your own pace! The concept of the challenge is a reference to the various Fashion Weeks that happen around the world, but by no means is it restricted to any real time frame!
Only want to write or draw for a few of the prompts? Maybe only one? Wanna work out of order? Go ahead! This is a challenge of course, but if you just aren't connecting with some of the prompts, don't force it!
Feel free to use the ideas you come up with for this into more in-depth works!
It's never too early or too late to give it a shot, and I'll always keep an eye on tags and mentions for new additions!
