I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed with negativity on the internet recently and thus I've decided to take matters into my own hands and spread some ✨love and positivity✨

And what better way to do that, than to recommend wonderfully written fanfiction I've come across this year? Admittedly, I haven't read as much as I would have liked, but I still want to share the few I did read. So without further ado, here are my fic recs of 2024 (thus far! Might add to this along the line):

Baldur's Gate 3 Fic recs:

O Fortuna [by @gufu-vire] on AO3 - Raphael x Dark Urge ❦ Plot: Post the events of BG3, a redeemed Dark Urge and Raphael renegotiate terms to fulfil a contract sworn upon during the crisis of the Absolute. An adventure fraught with tension, frustration, conflict, and more as the reader partners up with the devil you love to hate…

This is possibly a very biased mention on this list, because I consider Goof a very dear friend and moot, but it is a deserved spot nonetheless! I have yet to catch up with a majority of the chapters, but I'm enjoying a lot of sneak peeks and Gufu's creative process in private in the meantime. Between the conflict this story is utterly hilarious and witty and is a perfect balance between action and idle affairs. There are also so many intriguing takes on Raphael as a character & Harleep deserves a trophy on his own. I could talk a lot about this story, but truly, I cannot recommend it enough!

Sleep Deprivation - [by @nyda-the-tav & Aisln] on AO3 - Gortash x Tav ❦ Plot: As Orin continues to harass the group of misfits trying to stop the Absolute, Ophelia (Tav) looks for safety in the arms of Gortash in an effort to combat sleep deprivation.

I've only recently started reading this story & both authors best believe that once I've caught up with all 50(!) chapters, I'll leave a more detailed review for Sleep Deprivation. But what I've read thus far has been nothing short of a joy, and I'm always down for a good Tav being absolutely ruined by Gortash himself. The dynamic between the supposed enemy and the hero is gripping, hilarious and not to mention really well written! Kudos to the authors! I'm really excited to read more of what you two come up with!

His Star - His Queen [by @random-introverted-blog] on AO3 - Astarion x Tav/Astarion x Dark Urge ❦ Plot: An ascended Astarion kidnaps the Dark Urge/Tav from a different timeline, after loosing her in his. Desperate to save Tav/Durge from himself, Astarion follows her to rescue his love from certain suffering at his own hands.

I was recommended this story on TikTok (of all places, lol) and I wasn't sure what to expect - but holy shit. The first chapter alone had me on the edge of my seat, as you're really thrown into the action from the start, but the entire premise had me hooked as soon as Ascendant Astarion made his appearance. I often have issues with the ascended version of Astarion's character (I just looooove fixing him & I've got issues with the 'make him worse' story arc), but the exploration of what could have been in tandem with trying to save the heroine from inevitable suffering is beautiful & I can't recommend it enough. I've yet to catch up with every chapter (can you tell I've got trouble keeping up with fics, lmfao?) but either way, "His Star - His Queen" is deservedly on this list!

Judgement by the Hounds [by @septembersummer] on AO3 - Gortash x The Dark Urge ❦ Plot: A look into the relationship of The Dark Urge (Seren) and Gortash, from their first meeting up to their shared end. "The rise and fall of the worst situationship of all time" indeed.

This one I actually finished (very slay), though I'm not sure I actually processed it. I went through all five stages of grief reading this and I'm not even sure I can say anything without spoiling the entire premise. Dear author, you have written possibly the most captivating and enchanting portrayal of Durge and Gortash & though I knew how it would end, I was wishing for a happy end through it all. There's nothing to say about this, other than it was utter perfection.

Hogwarts Legacy Fic rec's: a very short list, but two are dear to me nonetheless!

Victory [by @jonquil] on AO3 - Victor Rookwood x Original Female Character ❦ Plot: Victor Rookwood is enraptured by the new, ancient-magic-wielding student attending Hogwarts - and Victor Rookwood always comes out on top.

Technically I started reading "Victory" in 2023, when it first came out, alas, it was finished earlier this year and I couldn't help but include it, because it remains one of my favourite fanfiction ever. To me, it's the best fictionalisation of "Enemies to Lovers" in a long time, as I was rooting for the villain to win from start to finish. From the wonderful characterisation of Rookwood to the alternative canon timeline and ultimately the victory of the villain - there's nothing like it and I was hooked from start to finish. I am still sad it's over, but I'm excited to read the prequel (as soon as I get to it, lmfao), because I know it'll be equally spectacular!

Invisible String [by @legacygirlingreen] on tumblr (though it can be found on both AO3 and wattpad too!) - Sebastian Sallow x Reader ❦ Plot: In an alternative, victorian-attitude-compliant timeline, Sebastian Sallow falls for the new fifth-year. This story explores the sweet beginnings of a tender love amidst hardships and battles ahead.

Admittedly, this is possibly the most biased fic rec ever, but I stand behind it nonetheless. While this fic started in March of last year & brought me and my platonic soulmate May, aka legacygirlingreen, together, it remains my favourite Sebastian Sallow fic to this day. The amount of love, time and creativity May put into this has me in awe time and time again. The sweet and tender love the two protagonists experience is perfectly fluffy and slice-of-life, yet the alternative version of the canon events of Hogwarts Legacy add the perfect amount of drama and action. I will always come back to this fic, because yes - It is that good.

The Best College Parties are the Ones that You Leave Early by MariMoon812 (T, 3k) For a moment they just started at each other as Crowley’s spinning head tried to comprehend what, exactly, was happening. Was this one of the professors? No, he clearly wasn’t that old, but then why was he dressed like that? Was it a hipster thing? Did the guy also have an antique typewritter that he used to write history papers? What? Why was he just staring at him? Just as Crowley was beginning to short circuit, the boy squinted at him and leaned forward slightly. “Erm…” “Why are you wearing sunglasses?” “Huh?”

The moment Felix pulled up to his ‘secret location,’ you turned over to look at him with wide eyes and a dropped mouth.

“Why are we here?” You asked as you watched him switch the car off and flash you a playful smirk.

“Thought it might help to make you feel better… sweets always do that for me, at least.” He shrugged nonchalantly, like him bringing you to the ice cream shop of your childhood wasn’t that big of a deal. The Ice Cream Hut was located right on the popular local boardwalk of Bridgeport Bay and was open 24/7. Throughout your childhood, you and your friends had frequented the joint, going all summer long and tasting all the flavors of the rainbow. Felix was a creature of habit and had always chosen the mint chip for his flavor of the day, while you were always trying something new.

Over the years, you had stopped coming to the place. It held too many painful memories for you. And to be honest, you weren’t craving the sweet ice cream like you once were as a young child. You had tried to go into the place soon after Felix left for South Korea, but you ended up just running out and back into your car, in a fitful of tears as the painful memories of your last argument resurfaced.

As soon as you entered the Ice Cream Hut, the smell of freshly baked waffle cones and sugary ice cream filled your nose. “Damn, this place hasn’t changed one bit from how it was during our childhood,” you mused, as you took a peruse around the coolers that held the ice cream. There were well over thirty different flavors, but with it being so late at night, you two were the only ones there.

You turned to Felix and noticed him giving you the look. The one he always had whenever he was feeling super happy. It spread across his face, turning the corners of his mouth up and crinkling the edges of his eyes. He always lit up the entire room whenever he grinned like that.

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?” You asked, raising a quizzical eyebrow his way as you ordered a scoop of rocky road on a waffle cone.

Felix laughed heartily, like him taking you to an ice cream place at two in the morning on a Sunday was something the two of you did regularly. Well, it was something you two used to do. That is, until everything turned to shit and he moved away and your heart broke again and again with every day that passed. “I don’t know- I’m just happy to see that you’re feeling a little better.” He said, going ahead and ordering his usual - a scoop of mint chip on a sugar cone.

At the mention of the party from an hour before, and the way that everything had blown up in your face, you felt your heart start to throb with a dull ache. In an instant, a cool shiver was running down the length of your spine, and you were already finding a seat near the window of the shop to catch your breath.

“Sorry, I shouldn’t have even mentioned it,” Felix started, reaching out to you from his seat across the small blue-stained wooden table and offering your free hand a gentle squeeze. “We don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to… I totally understand if you want to forget about it all.”

You found yourself shaking your head, taking a tiny lick of your ice cream to try and quell the rising agony that was lifting from your chest and into your throat. You could feel it coating your cheeks in a healthy dose of crimson, coloring your ears in a pinky-blush. “No- no, it’s okay. I don’t mind talking about it.”

Felix offered you a frown, and you could feel his eyes scan up and down your slumped form as you took a huge bite out of your cone. “You know… it’s okay to be upset about it. I think any sane person would,” you peered up at him through your blurry eyes. The bright lights of the ice cream shop made your head throb painfully and your eyes water from unshed tears. “Just, don’t hold anything inside, yeah? That shit- bottling it all up, isn’t good for you.”

You stayed silent after that, focusing on your ice cream for a little bit. Focusing on the view that was just outside the window. The ocean could be seen in the distance, but with the time of day, it just looked like a black mass of nothingness. It almost resembled what you were feeling at that moment - bleak and cold and deep, with so many different emotions swirling in your depths all at once.

“At the moment, I was mostly just angry,” you began hesitantly after the two of you had finished your ice cream and you were sitting back in your chair. He was right - the sweetness was helping to soothe the ache of everything. Sure, it was cloying on your tongue, but at least you were concentrating more on that than the resentment that you felt buried deep in your soul. “But now, I’m just really fucking upset. Like… why the fuck would he do such a thing? And I know it was just some stupid party game and he just meant it as a joke, but-”

“What if it... wasn’t a joke, Y/N?”

His question came out a little hushed, and as your eyes flitted up to stare at him, it felt like it was only the two of you in the shop at that moment. The employee that was standing behind the counter scrolling on his phone seemed to melt away, and all you could pay attention to was the way that he was gazing back at you.

Dark brows pulled together,

Jaw stretched tautly,

Lips pressed into a firm line,

Eyes sparkling with a myriad of concerns and worries.

“W-What?” You tripped over your words, hands fiddling with the hemline of your shirt to keep yourself busy. To keep your mind busy.

“I mean… what if that wasn’t a one-off thing? Not just a party game thing?” You could tell he was hesitant to continue, as he tilted his head to one side, gauging your reaction to his words by his eyes bouncing around your form. “I mean, what if it’s something that happens quite often?”

You gave him an incredulous chuckle, “What, like Chris is fucking my best friend?”

At his quietness, you turned rigid in your seat.

Spine going stiff as a board,

The blood rushing like icy heat through your veins,

Mind spinning out of control as you began to conjure up all kinds of ideas and wonderings.

“Felix- do you… do you know something that I don’t?” Your voice came out grave and quiet, as you felt your eyes widen in shock. You could feel your heart beat against your chest so fast, it felt like you were about to break all of your ribs from the impact.

He offered you a peculiar look. One that you couldn’t quite read all of the way. Almost like, he already had his answer for you, but knew you wouldn’t like it, so he was withholding the information. And one thing that you loathed the most in the world, was when people would hide shit from you.

At his silence, you spoke up again. “Felix, if you know something, you need to fucking tell me right now or I swear I’ll-”

He threw his hands up in the air in defeat, offering you a deep frown and running a few fingers through his messy blonde hair. Even though he hadn’t drunk at the party, it sure looked like it. With the messy cuff of his violet-purple graphic tee and flushed cheeks. It almost seemed like… he had been with someone at the party. Made out in the back corner of Jeongin’s living room and stuck his tongue down someone’s throat and you didn’t know how to feel about that. It was apparent from the flush of his cheeks - the swollenness around the corners of his lips.

Finally, he was speaking again. But his voice came out hushed like he was afraid someone you knew would walk in any minute. Someone like Chris. And hear his words. “It’s just that… I’ve noticed some things between him and Yeji. Like- the air is charged when they’re together and it was so fucking obvious tonight. And I don’t fucking know, it’s really-”

In the next breath, you were shooting up from your chair. Your movements were so fast that the metal scraped against the lime-green linoleum floor and made your eardrums ring with the screech for a second. But nothing else matter at that moment, because all you could focus on was what he was saying.

What Felix was saying.

What your ex-best friend who had abandoned you was trying to claim about your boyfriend.

“Are you saying that Chris is cheating on me?” You asked incredulously, voice already starting to rise. You could feel the red start to creep up the column of your neck again, painting your entire face in a deep shade of crimson. “Sure- what he did at the party was fucked up, but I don’t think he’s actually getting his dick wet with Yeji!”

Felix sat back in his chair, eyes widening by the second at your sudden change in demeanor. And if you were being truly honest, you were more hurt about his suggestion of Chris cheating on you than the stunt that your boyfriend had pulled at the party.

The fact that he was insinuating something so horrible made your stomach churn in a fit of rage, and already, you could feel the red seeping into the edges of your vision. Painting everything in a blush-colored light.

“I’m not saying that, Y/N,” Felix protested, standing up from his chair now as well and gazing at you with a desperate look on his face. One that read of hurt and confusion. “I’m just saying… I think maybe there’s more to him than you think you know about…”

You chuckled, but there wasn’t an ounce of humor in your voice. Instead, it came out all gravelly and bitter. And then in the next beat, you were scooping up your handbag from the table and leveling him with a cold stare. “Yeah, well fuck this- I don’t need your bullshit of an excuse for a therapy session when all you’re trying to do is convince me that my boyfriend is sleeping with my best friend!” You shouted, your tone coming out so hard, it cut through the air like an icy dagger. Slicing through skin and heart and puncturing right into Felix.

You could tell it hurt like a bitch, too, from the way his brows crumpled together and the look in his eyes melted from one of confusion to pain. The light that you had found shining there the entire time you ate your ice cream together vanished. That happiness that you had seen flash across his face as soon as you stepped into the Ice Cream Hut was wiped away.In an instant, it drained out of him, leaving him to be a shell of the man that he had been not even five minutes earlier. “Y/N, I-”

But you didn’t afford him the chance to reply, as you flitted out of the ice cream shop’s front door as fast as you could. You set a hellish pace down the sidewalk, and with it being so late at night, the road right alongside you was void of any cars. It was silent, save for the sound of your breath as it fell in anxious patterns in front of you.

In, out-

A firm, slender hand clamping down on your forearm sent you careening to a stop, and you heard a sharp intake of air sound from just behind you. For a moment, you stood there, motionless. You didn’t even know where you were going at first.

You just had to get away from it all.

From what he was insinuating,

And what his words were bringing up…

Hurts from the past,

Memories from the time when you had had such a big fight about your boyfriend Chris, that you had ended things with Felix permanently.

At least, you had thought that things were permanent.

Until Lee Felix showed up on the doorstep of Angel Waves two weeks before, all sun-kissed and bleach-blonde hair and muscular shoulders.

Everything hurt, and it had grown to be too much.

“Wait- Y/N. Please, just wait for a second.”

His voice came out in a wavering line, ghosting over your ears and forcing a violent shiver down your spine.

At that moment, you couldn’t even turn around to look at him. With your heart beating against your ribcage and your mind running a mile a minute, you could do nothing but stand there, arm still being held by one of his slender hands. The tears flowing down your cheeks left wet tracks in their wake. They clouded the corners of your vision, turning everything into a murky cobalt blue.

“You don’t have to say anything else, Felix,” you began, voice cracking under the pressure of it all, as you took in a shuddering breath and leveled your gaze onto the sidewalk ahead of you. Your parent’s house wasn’t too far away, which was always why you had frequented the ice cream shop as a kid. The walk wouldn’t be that bad. “I already know how you feel - about him, about me… about us. You already expressed your blatant disapproval when you left me in shambles years ago. I’m not expecting any better from you- I don’t need your approval of who I do and don’t date. So stay the fuck out of my life and my business and my relationship.”

The words were truly cruel and heartless.

That much, you knew.

And even though you had been seeing nothing but red earlier in the ice cream shop, now everything was turned to a dull, hollow ache.

You weren’t even that upset about Chris anymore.

You weren’t upset about his stupid display at the party, or even the fact that Felix had insinuated the relationship between your boyfriend and your best friend was anything more than cordial.

No, you were upset at Felix.

Right then, you wanted nothing more but to never see him again.

To never lay your eyes upon his shining, brilliant face,

Or hear his deep timbre voice,

Or remember all of the days you had spent together as kids - good and bad.

You wished you could go to sleep and wipe all memory of him.

Because maybe then, you wouldn’t feel so much agony.

It throbbed through you, shooting up the pit of your stomach, dancing in your veins, coursing across your eardrums, and pooling in your throat as a large lump and big, fat tears that didn’t stop.

Your legs were moving on their own accord, carrying you forward, toward’s your parent's house. Your arm still burned from where Felix had touched it - it felt seared from the sharp pull you took as you drew away from him.

And the worst part about it all?

Was that the entire time,

You wanted nothing more but for Felix to catch up to you,

To throw his arms around you and bury his delicate face in the crook between your shoulder and neck and sob his heart out as he told you how sorry he was.

But instead,

You were left with complete and utter silence.

No grabbing, no crying, no pleading.

And that’s what hurt the most.

Thank you for the tag @tenthousandyearsx a few weeks ago! I wanted to wait and get a couple of my WIPs ready and posted before doing it, but I'm now back to full time work so it's unlikely I'll finish those WIPs any time soon. 😢 So, here's 5 old fics of mine that I'm fond of. It's hard to choose a favourite, so I chose rather randomly, whatever popped in my head first tbh.

They're all drarry.

The Unquiet Grave (E, 21,5k, gothic vibes)

Quote: ‘What will happen is this. You’ll drag me to a poncy restaurant one evening soon, and I’ll complain about the number of forks and the size of the portions. Then I’ll drag you to my local and you’ll complain about the wine list and the clientele. This will be a recurring theme. But every time, every single time, we’ll end up in my bed — or yours — and I’ll make you forget your own name.’

My thoughts: I reread this yesterday after years, and I ended up really enjoying it. I particularly liked the dialogue in this read. I'm pretty happy with how this fic turned out. It's got a gothic mood and fits an autumnal mood; I often rec it for Halloween.

Sometimes a man needs (E, 5.5k, Flower Shop)

Quote: Harry knew what a huge mistake the whole thing was, but he’d already fallen for Malfoy, so what harm would a few more nights do? What harm would it do to kiss Malfoy some more and inhale his intoxicating smell? What harm was it that Malfoy spent almost every evening with Harry and whispered things in the dark that he never alluded to in the day? Harry was in love and in pain, but he might as well get what he could while he could.

My thoughts: I love the magical flower shop I created here, the types of flowers I came up with, and, craft-wise, I love Harry's voice. I remember I'd struggled with this fic, starting and deleting, starting and deleting, until I got a handle on Harry's voice and then it flowed in a morning.

The Gift (E, 29,5k, Captive Prince references)

Quote: Draco’s desires — at least where Potter is concerned — are a tangle, messed up like he is. A war of contradictions: Draco wants to please Potter, and he wants to hurt him. He wants to see Potter in ecstasy, but he can’t allow himself to be the one to do it. So, he’s chosen another way, a way that gives and takes at the same time. ‘You’ve been such a good boy so far,’ Draco tells Potter and watches with pleasure his instant reaction, the blood colouring his face. ‘I think you deserve a treat for being so good. So… obedient. Which is why Adam here will give you a… gift.’

My thoughts: Used to have complicated feelings about this one. I'd hidden it for years and only revealed it a couple of months ago. Draco is a writer here and channels many of my doubts and insecurities. It's not a fic that has a wide appeal, not cute or fluffy at all, but I love my prose here and I had fun with inserting CaPri nods and writing excerpts of a magical CaPri story.

The Boy Who Died (E, 26.8k, Voldemort Wins AU)

Quote: At times he thought he noticed his own lust mirrored in Malfoy’s gaze, like when he cooked and Harry sat on the kitchen table, mouth and fingers sticky with treacle syrup or brown sugar, or when Harry left the shower in his pyjama bottoms, his hair soft like a waterfall down his bare shoulders. Harry had taken to sleeping topless; he couldn’t get used to Malfoy’s fancy pyjamas, and although Malfoy had looked extremely put out the first time, he didn’t object.

My thoughts: I'm just so fond of this one! I thought of the reincarnation plot because of wangxian and I peppered some wangxian Easter eggs in this fic, but I didn't expect to fall in love with this dystopian, Voldemort Wins 'verse. It's a bleak world but somehow this fic has become one of my comfort reads and I've reread it often since posting it.

Through the Looking Glass and What Draco Found There (E, 17.4k, Mirror of Erised alternate dimension)

Quote: Getting to know Harry was to love him: hearing him laugh at Weasley’s jokes, watching him sleep, witnessing his passionate devotion to what was right and the ardor with which he supported his friends. He had butterflies in his stomach just at the sight of him; a sentiment he attempted to hide under a mask of cool detachment, because if anyone found out, Draco would be kicked out of Slytherin for incurable soppiness.

My thoughts: I love the Mirror universe I came up with, and am proud of the treatment of the Shrieking Shack in this fic, which I haven't seen elsewhere. It's one of my works I'm most proud of. I didn't expect it'd be emotional, but I've received a bunch of comments, some of them very recently, saying it made readers cry. oops?

I watched the live action One Piece because of you and your excitement over it and I really loved it, so thank you! Wondering if you have suggestions of where to go next? Read the manga or watch the anime? It honestly seems a bit overwhelming, so not sure where to start.

That's awesome! I love inspiring people to try One Piece, it's a really fun ride! It's always great seeing new fans coming in to enjoy the series! 🤗

I wanted to be as informative and thorough as I could for anyone wondering about this, so this might be long, but I'll provide a summarized version to start then include the long version under a readmore if you want more info in order to decide. Sorry if it gets a bit rambling lol.

So the answer to the "anime or manga" question is not necessarily complicated, but it is a little more nuanced than some fans will lead you to believe (a lot of manga-only elitists have a hate boner for the anime to a degree that imo isn't warranted) . There are a few major factors.

Summarized version:

1) this one's obvious, but bears saying; if you prefer manga, go with the manga, if you prefer anime, go with the anime. If you like both, go with both, unless you only want to consume one. Some people tend to gravitate towards one over another, and that's fine.

2) if you're interested in consuming both, I recommend starting with the anime, then going to the manga after, to avoid tainting your experience with the anime by comparing it to the manga all the time. If you only want to consume one, stick to the manga, because it is the better version. If you're on the fence or haven't decided yet, start with the manga then decide if you want to also try the anime later.

3) if you want to consume the anime, then determine how much of the original experience you want to be retained. There's not many filler episodes, but they do exist, and there are watch lists that explain which episodes to skip if you don't want to watch them. Otherwise obviously the manga is the true original and is the best version of the story. The anime isn't terrible, I still enjoy it, but it does have its flaws compared to the manga. That said, it does also have some benefits you can't get from the manga such as the top notch voice acting (at least in Japanese) and incredible soundtrack. Also the animation in Wano has been sending One Piece fans to the emergency room with priapism lately so do with that what you will.

4) determine how much time you're willing to invest. The manga is going to be the fastest way to consume the series, but there is a fan edited version of the anime that speeds up the pacing to match the manga, and thus takes a lot less time to catch up on. You can also read the manga then look up your favourite scenes in the anime as a supplement without investing into watching the whole anime, either shorter or longer version. The only thing to keep in mind is don't ever skip any canon arcs, you WILL regret it later. Oda never forgets.

Now, for:

The long version (oh god I'm so sorry this got so long I am incapable of talking about this topic succinctly):

1) what type of media do you prefer and have an easier time consuming? Comic or animation?

I have an anime only friend who struggles with reading comics for some reason (he can read books just fine, but he struggles with comics and he doesn't know why), but he loves the anime, and is even currently rewatching it so we can catch up on watching Wano together since that arc is ending soon and we like to wait and binge entire arcs instead of watching weekly. If you prefer one over another, then whichever that is, is fine fine to go with. If you don't have a preference, then your next factor is:

2) do you want to only consume one, or are you open to consuming both?

I read the manga and watch the anime. I get a slightly different experience from both, I prefer the art and pacing of the manga, but I love the voice acting and music of the anime, and some moments just hit harder for me in the anime. I haven't cried very often reading the manga, but I have cried quite a bit more watching the anime when seeing the same scenes, like full on sobbing at some points ngl. It's not that I think the moments are done better in the anime or that they're not just as sad, but I have an easier time crying when seeing something in motion with sound for some reason. I rarely ever cry when reading books or comics. It happens, but not as easily or as often. Also while the animation throughout most of the series is middling (not bad but not amazing) for most of the series, aside from major fights, the most recent arcs have seen a huge upgrade in regards to the animation, WCI to some extent but especially Wano. The animators have just been going HAM on the animation during Wano. Like, it's all but impossible to find good examples without spoilers because of just, how many spoilers there are at that point in the story, but I'll at least show Luffy being pretty lol:

That said, the anime isn't without its flaws, but I'll get to that in a bit.

If you do want to consume both, then personally I recommend watching the anime first. I find people who read the manga first are more prone to comparing everything in the anime to the manga and wanting things to fit 1:1, which I think puts the anime at a disadvantage and makes people a bit more hypercritical of it. But ultimately this is up to you. Maybe you don't know yet if you'll try both, in which case the manga is probably better because it's the version that, by its nature, is the best version, and will give you the original experience, and you can decide later whether you want to supplement that with the anime as well.

If you only want to consume 1, at least mainly, then the next factor is:

3) How much of the original experience do you want to stick to?

The One Piece anime doesn't have nearly as many filler arcs/episodes as other long running shounens have had in the past, and past Enies Lobby there's almost no filler arcs whatsoever, aside from the rare 2-5 episode arcs, usually ones that advertise the movies that came out not long after they aired. But there are some full filler arcs earlier in the anime, and the general consensus is that most are pretty meh. Not horrid, but nothing special, and many of them ended up accidentally contradicting canon when new information about the world or certain in-world systems came out later. There are watch guides for skipping these widely available, and most OP fans do recommend watching the G8 filler arc because it's viewed as the only one that is on par with, or at least close to, canon content. I enjoy it myself as well personally.

That said, one of my biggest gripes about the anime, especially after sabaody up until Wano, is how it takes Odas more mild level of sexualization in comparison and dials it up to 1000. At its worst it has taken scenes where a female character is introduced with a full body shot and a name/title card in the manga, and turned it into a scene where the camera zooms in on her boobs, thighs, waist, butt, and then slowly pans up her body starting from the feet, including boi-oing noises or weird many sound effects with each zoom in shot. It also increased the boobs sizes and decreased the waist sizes constantly, put a lot more effort and attention into boobs jiggles than was necessary, and at least one point they even blatantly zoomed in on Nami's boobs bouncing isolated on the screen while she was running for absolutely NO reason. Oda doesn't do this in the manga. He doesn't introduce women in bits and pieces focusing on their body parts in an oggling manner, he doesn't put their boobs front and centre unless it's maybe by accident because of necessary framing. Even when he has sexy shots of women, they're usually full body shots that also even manage to serve as establishing shots most of the time. I also often get the feeling that a lot of it is also him being aware of his target audience in Japan, which is teenage boys. You can see a lot of how his approach adjusted when he has a different audience in mind in the Live action, not only regarding stuff like diversity (which WAS present in the original, their real life equivalent ethnicities have been said to be diverse for a long time, but Oda himself, as much as I love him, only has one skin tone marker in his whole house apparently and he uses it for every single character in colourspreads and covers, including the characters that are supposed to be black, and the anime isn't much better on that front, so it's nice to really see the proof of the diversity visually in the live action in a way that doesn't come across as clearly in the anime or manga), but also in regards to adjusting shounen tropes to better fit a live action setting. You can see in a lot of his SBS answers that he takes his target audience and what he wanted to see as a young boy into account a lot even if he might otherwise explore different tropes or depictions or structures in a different medium or genre.

BUT the anime does have its flaws. I won't pretend that Oda doesn't draw his female characters sexier as the series goes on, and while he also does with the men (Zoro canonically has the biggest bust size on the crew according to Oda lmao) it's not to the same degree as the women. This is especially concentrated around Nami, possibly because Oda's wife is a Nami cosplayer and iirc he met her while she was cosplaying Nami. It's the most overt in certain later arcs, but not too present in earlier arcs up to, say, Sabaody. But, while he does draw the women sexier, he's not... Idk the right terminology to use but he doesn't employ an oggling pov towards the women very often. Not never, but compared to the manga you relatively rarely get much particular purposeful focus on body parts like boobs or ass, there's also never any panty shots (seriously, not a single one in the entire series). That's not so say that the series is always perfect in this sense, but rather that's to compare it to the anime. And while there are some things One Piece doesn't do perfectly sometimes, there are also a lot of things it definitely gets right about how the women are written as complex multifaceted people with conflicts and motivations just as deep and diverse and complicated as the men. They mostly just look extra seggsy sometimes, at least the main ones do. And YMMV, but personally I'm okay with some sexiness, so long as it doesn't compromise the characters story and personality and doesn't go overboard to the point of being softcore porn, which Oda doesn't do in the manga. And I also don't like how often criticism of sexiness turns into shaming any clothing that shows more skin. There's a difference between disliking fanservice and going full conservative prude.

Now from what I've seen this has gotten significantly better in Wano in the anime, probably because Oda himself purposefully played down even his own horniness during Wano because of the focus on traditional Japanese aesthetics and dress. Idk if it will get bad again after Wano, but a lot has changed regarding the way the anime is animated and directed since the last time it was bad, so hopefully not. But this can be a significant barrier to the anime for some people. If that's the case, then I definitely recommend the manga. It's the original, and in comparison it is practically chaste. It's not prevalent throughout the entire anime, it's mostly bad for the stretch from Fishman Island to the end of WCI, which consists of 3 big arcs and 2 smaller in-between arcs, but improves significantly in Wano, and isn't too bad in arcs before Fishman Island. Still more egregious than the manga, but not to the same degree. So it's possible you can tolerate it for that stretch since there are still lots of good moments in the anime in these arcs too. Though I'll note that there's quite a bit of censorship in the anime compared to the manga, Zeff eating his own leg for example, while included in the live action, was not included in the anime. Instead he lost it when it got caught in some ship debris while he was rescuing Sanji from drowning. Stuff like gore and blood are also tones down a lot. The live action honestly isn't any more gory than the manga is, even at the beginning. There's even less blood in the live action, the wound Zoro got from Mihawk was nastayyyy in the manga. Bro nearly got bisected fr.

Though I will say that I think one thing that helps make the more sexualized aspects of the series feel more balanced and a lot less center stage is that Luffy himself, the main character, is completely and totally 1000% gender blind. He's not blind to stuff like masculinity or femininity, but he's blind to whether masculinity or femininity is something that is only applicable to men or women. He likes plenty of manly things, there's a gag about him not wanting frills on his shirt because he doesn't think they're manly and he doesn't like that, but he doesn't think that it makes a man less of a man if he wears a frilly shirt, and he's not opposed to wearing other clothes that might be more feminine coded like his fuckin cute li'l dress thing in Egghead, or the literal dress he wears proudly for all of 3 seconds in Film Gold lmao. There are plenty of men in the series who wear frilly shirts. There are also men who wear makeup, wear pink, crossdress, etc. Luffy could not give less of a shit what men, or women, wear. He does not discriminate between women and men in how he treats them in any way shape or form, his awareness of gender expression is limited entirely in how he personally expresses *his* idea of *his* gender. If a woman pisses him off he'll beat them up just as easily as he will a dude. If a trans man says they identify as a man, he'll refer to them as a man, even if they have a more feminine appearance, and vice versa. He does not blink an eye at non-binary/genderfluid/queer characters, etc. That's one of my favourite things about his character, in part because I'm aroace and identify with him and his gender blindness a lot (among other things, he is an aroace icon for a reason lmao), but also because it's nice to have a 100% gender blind character as the main pov throughout the series.

Then there's the final factor, which is

4) How much time are you willing to spend?

The anime is undoubtedly the longer time investment. Which can be good or bad depending on your view. I know when I caught up sometime after episode 505, I was devastated at not having any more episodes to watch. I started out thinking "this will take me forever and I probably won't finish it", then shifted to "damn those 100 episodes went by fast, but that's okay, I still have 400 episodes left" to "200 episodes already? Well I'm not even halfway yet, that's fine" to "300... Oh God I'm already more than halfway" to "400!? Where are they all going?? Why aren't there more?!?" to "well I HAVE to read the manga now because I can't stand to wait for the episodes to come out weekly" then I banged out the rest of the series in the manga in a few days like I was a drug addict trying to hide my stash from the police by snorting it all at once. So to some, the length can be a blessing rather than a curse lmao. But if you are worried about length, the manga is a lot easier to go through without taking months and months to catch up, unless you take your time reading it. There is a fan edited version of the anime called One Pace, which takes out all the filler and adjusts the pacing to be closer to the manga, which might also be an option if you want to watch the anime but still want a less exhaustive itinerary to watch. They. Might even edit out a bunch of the excess sexual shots and editing in the anime though I haven't watched it myself to determine that. The main issue is that One Pace hasn't completed every single arc, but it is an option for watching the arcs it does have. I know Dressrosa is one of the longest arcs and might benefit from some trimming. I also recommend, if you choose the anime, to watch episodes in batches rather than weekly. While the pacing of the manga is quite a bit faster, so it lends itself to weekly updates better, the anime does suffer from being watched weekly. I've always binged arcs all together and I find that improves the experience a lot.

Aside from that, you can also always just read the manga then only look up and watch particular scenes you wanna see in the anime to get the experience with the voice acting and music and animation, without having to invest as much extra time into it. I may not be a dedicated anime hater, but I do agree that the manga is undoubtedly superior to it as a whole, so while I don't think there's anything wrong with being anime only, if you are open to both, but only want to choose one to consume, it's the manga all the way. You only have to start at chapter 1 and go from there. Or episode 1 for the anime.

I hope this helped, and wasn't too confusing or overwhelming. I know how daunting the series can be to get into so I wanted to try and be comprehensive and objective, and provide some approachable options for people new to the series by explaining some pros and cons of each approach.

I need to know what day I need to put on my calendar because I've reread the second fic so many times and still each time I reread it it makes me feel sick to my stomach in the best way possible, but this is the first time I've actively sought out your Tumblr to learn more about your fics and you and I'm so excited for the third installment I've constantly been stimming for the past three hours ;o;

This will all make sense in approximately a few months. I've rewritten this thing so many times it has its own Google doc. Its own. I've written every fanfiction I've ever written for every fandom on one gigantic Google Doc but early though the laurel grows gets its own google doc because it thinks it's a special baby that deserves 209 pages of which 170 of them are me throwing them into the virtual incinerator and laughing at the confetti that comes out.

I am continually working on early though the laurel grows, the last installment of To an Athlete Dying Young, but she is looking to be a hefty girl in more ways than one and as I am ripping apart her insides with my bare teeth and rearranging her within my jaws I don't want to start posting chapters when it's likely they'll change.

I'm so honored people are waiting for this? I've been writing To an Athlete Dying Young pretty much nonstop for over a year now, and I only want to share the best with you! Unfortunately I don't have a calendar date, but the work is moving and moving very fast. I'll give more updates (and more deleted scenes, there are a LOT) as I get closer to the finish!

Aww, I love this! Okay, thank you so much and thank you for the chance to do some navel gazing!

Also... my AO3 has 144 stories on it. When did that happen? For a question like this, I want to pick for quality of writing, but I'm finding myself going back mostly to the stories that either really stretched or defined me as a writer, or simply the ones that were a really memorable experience to write . . . which unfortunately means mostly my longer fics, as so many of the shorter ones were written in a single flurry that I barely remember after the fact! Even though there are some shorter fics that I think are better than the longer ones. So let's get started.

Finding a Voice - I mean, how can I not say this one? This fic, like a lot of my older work, has some passages and scenes that I think are so good I can't believe I wrote them, and some that make me cringe to look back on - but how can I not pick it, when it's the story that probably defines me most as a writer? It's the story that allowed me to stake out my own headcanons and gave rise to hundreds of thousands more in the same world. And, like all my LOTR stuff, I do want to return to it someday soon. <3

Ever Changing, Ever Climbing - still the longest thing I've ever written, and the thing I worked on for the longest time. I lived in the world of this story and these characters for almost a year, and probably came the closest I ever have to what non-fanfic authors experience when coming up with their own characters, because I got to make so much of it up! It similarly has bits that make me cringe, especially when I realize how much more deeply other people have thought about Mirkwood worldbuilding and how much lore I straight-up got wrong, but I think it also has some of my best prose and my best romance writing. And siblings. I got to write baby Legolas in this! And also I just love Laerwen so much and love that I got the chance to write her an origin story, so that it doesn't all exist only in the background of my head.

Only Through Surrender - come on, this is my current obsession; I was never not going to put it on the list! But in some ways, this is exactly the inverse of the previous story. I wrote this faster than I've ever written anything this long, and it's the most daring thing I've ever written in terms of plot. The romance is almost a subplot, which I don't know that I've ever done satisfactorily, and it's an AU, which is not something I'm great at sustaining, and even though I don't know that the writing style overall is my best work, I think that the structure and pacing of the story - and the things I did with characters - are pretty good, all things considered! The only non-LOTR fic on this list.

Velle - in terms of "fun to write," this story might be the very top of all of them. This was @deheerkonijn's and my early-covid project (we actually started it a couple months before, but I think working on it saved us in those early telework days of stress and angst); it's a form of storytelling neither of us had tried before, combining both of our skills, and it's probably the most rigorously edited and densely-packed thing I've ever written. We went over and over and over this story with a fine-toothed comb, making sure the writing and the art worked perfectly together, and we liked it so much we printed it as a physical book! *smooches my copy gently*

Having moved out of the most iconic ones, I wasn't sure what to pick for the last! This became a bit of a toss-up, but I wanted to have a shorter fic represented, so: the hunter's heart, the hunter's mouth. This is my only fic with a Richard Siken title, so I figured it was fitting given that he's everywhere right now. ;) Inspired by the title, this is one of my more deliberately poetic fics, and I had a lot of fun with the writing. It's also some of my more daringly explicit work! (still does not include any words for certain aspects of anatomy)

Okay here finally is the music meme @blotthis tagged me in. I don't know what Spotify likes are so I tried to approximate them by listening to a bunch of Bandcamp albums someone on cohost recced a while ago. I chose my favorite song from each album, in order I have them bookmarked. It's been a fun exercise in reshaping my mind to a diverse set of aesthetic paradigms so I can try to understand what each musician sees in their own music. That said. Some of these I'd be reccing anyway.

Points At Head from This Year I Lose My Mind by 2 Mello. Music that makes me wish I had more genre vocabulary. Energetic, funky, hiphoppy I guess?? Jazzy. Has kind of a C2C/Destroid vibe. We're grooving. I like this album.

Oh My God from Shabrang by Sevdaliza. Dark, breathy, synthy. Sevdaliza does fun stuff with autotune and other vocal mods as well as having a lot of great beats. Honestly I'd love to hear more of her unmodified voice in this track because she's a great vocalist. This is a good album if you want to get kind of chill and introspective and weird.

Owens from Little Robert Hutton by Curly Castro. One of the slower starts on a very maximalist album. Curly Castro is doing some fantastic collage here; I like how he plays with samples, clearly pulling from classic DJing on vinyl. I don't know enough about modern rap to compare the vocals to anything but Doomtree, RIP.

Withering Fire from Still as the Night, Cold as the Wind by Vital Spirit. Okay, I will confess I'm not enough of a metalhead to be able to distinguish any of these songs from each other. But as far as I can tell it's a good example of the genre, and if you need some big dramatic texturey noises this album is here for you.

Rock from Ez Minzoku by Foodman. I was having a hard time picking a song from this album, because a lot of it kind of sounds like someone mashing a midifighter loaded with the Earthbound soundfont. The album is hit or miss for me but as soon as I heard Rock I had to put it on this list. An exuberant electric guitar chiptune that's just weird enough for me.

The Mystery (Dilla's Still Here) from Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6 by Madlib. This album only has two songs you can listen to without buying it but on hearing this one I immediately started digging for his first album so I could listen to more of his music. More fun with samples; this is what I might call chillhop if I weren't so aware how boring most chillhop is. From Wikipedia's page on him, no-one's really sure how to categorize him because he's fusing so many genres.

The Great Mist Within from The Great Mist Within by Auriferous Flame. See I said I wasn't enough of a metalhead for Vital Spirit but actually I am a metalhead now. I really like Auriferous Flame's chords and I am gaining appreciation for the textural nature of black metal. I didn't make it all the way through any of these songs but I would if I were just leaving the album playing while I draw.

Son of Man from Rice Field Silently Riping in the Night by Reiko Kudo. I feel like this is one of the best tracks to show off how Kudo thinks about sound, with the different instruments kind of detuned from each other. This whole album is sort of like a distorted reflection of "normal music." Despite occasional loud honking noises it's pretty chill. I enjoyed the description of the recording process at the bottom of the page.

Dance Now from The Forever Story by JID. If you listen to one hiphop album this year, it should be this one. Every single track is a flawless gem with no missing pieces and nothing unnecessary, so the specific song I picked is just the first one I really started jamming out to. Very slick but not overproduced, fantastic beats, fantastic rhymes, wonderful vocals, great instrumentation. I can't coherently talk about the vibe of this album, just listen to it.

Cruise Control from 2000 by Joey Badass. As you may have noticed, I tend to be into chill wavey hiphop, which is why I chose this song off 2000. I really like the outro, it has a classic jazz piano thing going on. This is a hard album to review because I think I'd be more into it if I hadn't just listened to THE PERFECT ALBUM. Ah well. It's good.

Classified is really soft and really brilliant, I love the way it's written too

hi guys. i’m sorry for never coming through with updates, but i’m kind of going through it at the moment.

ignoring the things going on in my personal life… i’m tired. i chose tumblr as my fanfic platform because of the community and how much i enjoyed being able to interact with others. it’s just not the same. recently there’s been a small influx of feedback (for which i’m extreme grateful and will be responding to soon!!!) but it’s just. maybe i’m asking for too much but it feels like too little too late. its so upsetting seeing “xyz has reblogged x post” and clicking on it, and AS ITS LOADING telling myself “don’t get your hopes up it’s probably empty”.

i deserve better. writers deserve better. i’m doing this for free and for fun and i get so little in return when i could be working or doing my homework and actually working towards my degree. not to brag, but i KNOW i’m at the very least, a decent writer. i’ve started setting my sights on traditional publishing despite how difficult it is to break through because i feel like i’m good at what i love doing. but i don’t want to do it on tumblr anymore. i don’t feel the drive to.

if you’d like to read about some of my other reasons, it’s below the cut, but a lot of it is me discussing triggering topics—pls be careful.

if you don’t feel like reading below the cut for my reasoning as to why i’m going to eventually stop posting, here’s what i want everyone to know:

i’m going to TRY to finish king & lionheart, with great power and the punisher anthology, because i love these stories so, so much. the updates will come when they come—i’m not changing my updates page, but i’ll at least try to give a few days heads up that they’re coming.

once i’m done with these fics, i don’t think i’ll write anything else on this blog. maybe, maybe not—i think it depends. i’m just all out of steam.

this blog will remain up mainly an archive, mostly because i know how upsetting it is to want to reread a fic and finding out the author deactivating. i’ll delete some posts, and if i post anything, it’ll be feedback for nsfw fics or answering certain asks. who knows, maybe i’ll drop something here and there.

i’ll eventually be going through my follower list and removing any ageless blogs or blogs who i know are minors on this main blog, something i should have done a long long time ago.

finally, i’ll be setting up an nsfw free side blog and using that as my “main” if you guys would like to keep contact with me. this isn’t just gonna be kpop but my other interests as well (but mostly kpop). i’ll also be posting sfw fic recs there. the blog is @threesrachas if any of y’all are interested!!

other than that, thank you so much to my mutuals and the ppl who made my time on tumblr so much fun. i loved getting to know and work with so many of you, you’re all amazingly talented, kind and funny people. thank you for being my escape from real life, i love you all so much for that.

tw: intense homesickness + generally bad mental health + self harm + hypersexuality

as some of you might know, i moved continents to study abroad last year. that’s a big part of what’s impacting me—i’m away from my main support system, i’m worried about issues within my family, as much as i want to deny it i feel like i’m losing my friends back home, i have to be financially independent and rely on myself to pay for things like tuition, groceries, health insurance, etc etc. it’s caused me so much stress and i feel like i’m being pulled in a MILLION different directions.

i kind of… don’t feel like myself. i wouldn’t call it disassociation because from the reading i’ve done my situation isn’t as severe. but i just feel so lost and disconnected from everyone around me. i feel like i’m unsure of where i want to go and how to move forward with things i know i need to do, but i don’t know how to bring myself to go through with them even though it’ll only be detrimental to me in the future.

i’m also realizing that my hypersexuality is becoming more and more of an issue as i go onward. and with this, i’m giving everyone a warning—i’ve been in the tumblr/ao3/wattpad fanfiction space since i was 12, and only at 21 am i beginning to realize just how detrimental that was for me. consuming so much nsfw content as a minor caused me to normalize and glorify certain sexual behaviors in an unhealthy way, and recently i’ve stumbled across more violent sexual content and the way that my brain has fixated on it terrifies me. i probably need to speak to someone about it.

as a result of these things, i’ve started self-harming again after being clean for like,, 5 years, and i hate myself so much for it. i thought i was finally better and i could finally put it behind me, but apparently not.

i just need more time for myself. my free time feels consumed because i get anxious for not writing, and i hate it. i need to take better care of myself and that’s not going to happen if i down scale back on my wips and unfinished fics. i want to get better. i miss being better, so so much.
