nora the arc) nora wants a pet to compete with zwei because it's not fair that rwby gets one but they don't! jaune points out it can't be a sloth because it wouldn't be able to be taken care of by them as often as needed.
thus the search begins to find the ultimate animal companion!
or nora adopts a Kodiak bear and everyone's too scared to tell her no and jaune can't tell her no without making her cry and he just can't handle that
"Get the chicken, boy! Get the chicken!" Nora sighed as she sat on the common room couch, watching Ruby play keep away with her dog, Zwei.
She always wanted a pet, but the Arc family household had a strict 'no pets allowed' rule. Part of it was due to the Nora and the other kids being too chaotic to properly care for them, but mostly it was because Isabella was allergic to pet dander.
"Yay! You got it!" Ruby cheered as Zwei hung from the chicken, shaking his tiny body to tear free the juicy, tender meat. The chicken squeaked as his jaws tightened around the chew toy.
"Jauney?" Nora whined. Her fiance was currently looking over important documents with Weiss. He wasn't familiar with them, but as a result of her upbringing as an heiress, she was.
"Yeah?" He replied without glancing from his papers.
"I want a pet." Nora whined.
"I'll pet you in a minute." He replied.
"No, like, a doggy, or a kitty cat!"
"We can't have pets, Nora." Jaune said.
"Ruby has a pet!"
"Ruby is dog sitting while her dad is on a mission." Jaune countered. "Zwei isn't going to stay with them forever." A paperclip hit him square in the nose, causing him to flinch. "Ow! What was that for, Weiss?"
"For being so rude." Weiss replied with a huff.
"Yeah, you're right." Jaune said, scratching his nose. "I'm sorry if I was rude to you, Nora."
"Not to her, you goof!" Weiss groused. "To me!"
"Huh? What did I say to you?" Weiss turned away and huffed.
"Well, if you won't get me a pet," Nora declared, standing from her seat, "then I'll just have to go out and find one!"
Before anyone could stop her, Nora was already gone. She left the common room so quickly, Jaune thought she might have been a pink blur. He simply sighed, since he knew there would be no stopping her.
"Right, where were we?" He said, turning his attention back to the papers. He was looking over leases, permits, fees, costs, and something called a home equity notice. He groaned as he remembered. For the past few hours, he was learning finances, realty, and the oh so wonderous benefits of home ownership. He hadn't even moved in and The Watchtower was already giving him a headache.
"We can stop for now, if you'd like." Weiss offered.
"Yeah." Jaune answered. "Yeah, I think that'd be for the best." He leaned back with a groan and massaged his temples. "I didn't sign up for this. I didn't sign up for any of this."
"Well, according to this document, you did." Weiss replied, holding up a page.
He sighed. "Where would we be without you, Weiss?"
"I'm lost." Nora declared. She decided the best location to find her pet was in the untamed wilderness of the Emerald Forest. She wandered in, Magnhild in hand for protection, and walked until she got here: in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees. "Wait!" She looked behind, then around the tree in front of her, and then crouched low, putting her ear to the ground. "Ah, now I know!" She stood up triumphantly. "I'm hopelessly lost!"
She decided she couldn't get more lost, so she decided to walk until she made it back to Beacon. As she traveled in the shadows of the forest's majesty, she considered what kind of pet would be best for her family.
First, the animal needed a lot of energy. Nora doesn't accept laziness. Sloths weren't lazy. In fact, they might be the most energetic animals in all of Remnant. Dedicated, too, since they never just poop from the trees. They climb down, poop, and then climb back up. If that wasn't dedication, Nora didn't know what was.
Second, it had to be tough. A pet that can't fight for it's home is just an expensive free-loader. It either had to be big and tough, or feisty enough to fight the big and tough.
Last, it had to be cute. Now, cute is a subjective term, but Nora knows cute. Zwei? Cute. Chihuahuas? Not cute. Ursas? Cute! Girls flirting with Jaune? Not cute!
A snapping twig caught her attention. She turned and saw the most adorable creature she ever saw! She almost cried. She kneeled down to her hands and knees, chin level to the ground. "You're perfect!"
"Has anyone seen Nora?" Jaune had just finished shuffling the papers into a pile, and placed them inside his bedside dresser drawer. Should make for a cozy roommate with his X-Ray and Vav comics. "It's almost time for dinner."
"Is she still looking for a pet?" Pyrrha asked, brushing her hair.
"I hope she didn't get lost." Ren said, eyes shut in meditation. "Does she have her scroll on her?"
"She does, but she didn't answer when I tried calling her." Jaune answered, holding up his scroll. "I'm gonna go look for her."
"We'll all go." Ren stood up slowly, recovering from sitting for so long. "I'll inform Professor Goodwitch."
Jaune nodded. He opened the door to their dorm and walked down to the locker storage to retrieve their weapons. They met up with Ren and Professor Goodwitch at the entrance. Her expression was as stoic as always.
'We're on our way.' Jaune thought, sending a silent prayer to Nora. 'Just hang on, Nora.'
Nora was bleeding; covered in scratches and bites as she wrestled with the beast in her arms. It was a Grimm of some kind. It had the dog-like features of a Beowolf, yet had more round features with floppy ears instead of erect points, and it's mask-like carapace only covered it's eyes instead of the entire top of it's head. It barked and snarled in her grasp.
"You are soooooo cute!" Nora cooed she walked with her puppy-dog Grimm. The little thing was all alone, and she just couldn't leave out here alone. They needed a home, and a mommy and daddy to love them. "I can't wait for you to meet your daddy."
She stepped into a clearing, and stared with wide-eyes at the stars that shined from the clear skies above. The pup continued to squirm in her grasp. She shifted her hands to hold the dog-like Grimm to her chest with one hand while resting the other on her brow.
"Aha!" Nora pointed into the darkness, a dark tower only seen atop it's hill by the moonlight. "There! Do you see that?" Nora held the pup aloft over her head. "There's your new home! Once Mommy and Daddy graduate, we'll be living there, just the three of us."
She sighed as she closed her eyes and dreamed of the future. She imagined her and Jaune, much older, sitting in a big living room on the couch, their children playing with their toys as their new puppy, now a much bigger dog, rested at their feet.
"Happily ever after." Nora brought her arms down to her. "Doesn't that sound nice?" She opened her eyes to a black-and-red mouth with sharp teeth on the edges, a reverberating growl tickling her face, numbing the pain.
"Nora!" A familiar voice called out to her. She turned to face it, but all she could see was Grimm mouth. "Are you okay?!"
"I'm fine!" Nora replied cheerily. She felt a tug on her face, and fingers over the white teeth. "I'm just out here playing with Lucky!"
"Lucky?!" Jaune pulled as hard as he could, pulling the jaws backwards to remove their grip on her face. He pulled it off, then let go as he moved in to check her wounds. "What did this little monster do to- OW!" Jaune felt a sharp pain on his rear, like needles digging en masse into his buttocks.
"Aw! Lucky loves your butt, too!"
"Nora, get it off!"
She rolled her eyes and sighed with a smile as she removed his new baby from his perfect butt. His pants ripped, but his underwear remained. She noticed the pup chewing on something between the fabric. It was a small, glass vial of Forever Fall sap.
"Aw, you brought us a present!" Nora cooed as she wrestled the glass from their teeth. "You didn't have to."
"If we needed a distraction, I did, and we probably will." He placed a hand on Nora's shoulder. "Honey, I understand you want to add a pet to our family to help us grow bigger, but a Grimm is-"
Nora stepped away, kneeling down and releasing the pup. They ran away from the two, barking loudly into the night. When she popped open the cap and poured the liquid into her palm, they stopped bark and watched carefully. She stayed low with an extended palm.
"It's okay." Nora whispered. "We won't hurt you." The pup cautiously approached. Once it got close enough, it pounced on Nora's hand. It's paws sticky, it sniffed and licked the sap from it's fur. Once it's paws were clean, it lapped up the rest of Nora's palm. Nora cautiously reached with her other hand, slowly and carefully, and scratched behind it's ear. It momentarily flinched, but continued to lick up the sticky substance. "Lucky, you're such a good baby."
"This is... interesting." Ren, Pyrrha and Professor Goodwitch arrived in time to watch Nora feed the tiny Grimm. "Are you okay, Nora?"
"I'm fine, Pyrrha." Nora said, refusing to look away from the pup. "Just a few cuts and bruises." Once the sap had been licked away, Lucky ran away from Nora. It stopped to look back once, then disappeared into the forest.
Nora stood up, taking a few steps towards where Lucky ran. She stopped and smiled. "I'm glad you liked it, Lucky. I love you."
Jaune smiled as he walked to her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling himself closer. She instinctively rested her head against his shoulder, cuddling closer.
"Do you think they'll be okay?" Nora's smile faded.
"You picked them, Nora." Jaune hugged her closer. "You don't settle for less than the best. I mean, you picked me, right?"
"Jaune," Pyrrha beckoned, blushing, "why do you have a hole in your pants?" He sighed. Yup, she sure knew how to pick them.

Percy Jackson Died
Percy Jackson died.
He was old enough, he supposed, older than so many of his friends he’d watched die, but not really old. Old enough he was tired, and suddenly finding himself in the lobby he recognized from when he was twelve years old was disconcerting but not particularly surprising.
After all, he was a half-blood, and being a half-blood often got you killed in very nasty ways.
But still.
Percy Jackson died.
Charon remembered him.
“Drown in any bathtubs recently?” he asked dryly, but he waved Percy’s apologies for not having a coin to offer him. “You paid me for passage once and it clearly didn’t stick.”
So Percy Jackson died, and he crossed the River Styx on the ferry, and this time, when he arrived in the Underworld, Cerberus was completely visible.
Last time he came to the Underworld to see Hades, he’d entered the fast-moving line and stepped into the fields of Asphodel. This time, he waited in line to see the judges.
He’d saved the world more than once, they’d better give him something better than eternal stasis.
“Percy Jackson.” Daedalus greeted him warmly, arms full of blueprints and a full toolbelt wrapped around his waist. “It’s nice to see you again.”
Before Percy could respond, he was pushed to the front of the line and was standing in front of three men he had a feeling he should recognize but he didn’t. He didn’t have to speak at all, the three judges talked to each other while flipping through papers Percy couldn’t read, and without actually acknowledging him at all, the one in the middle hit a green button and Percy found himself on the inside of the gated community he’d only seen from the outside.
Percy Jackson died and was sent to Elysium. For a little while, it held his attention. Pretty much anything he wanted, he could have. Blue Coke, straight out of the bottle, better than the blue Coke at Camp Half-Blood. Pizza just like the pizza from his favorite place to go with his mom. Infinite activities, everything he’d ever wanted to do but hadn’t been able to when he was alive. Skydiving, cliff jumping, he got to pilot a plane.
He got to see old friends. Beckendorf and Selena Beauregard, who’d found each other and were happy again. Demigods who’d died in the second Titan war who wanted to hear from him how it had ended, to know what really happened. Heroes who died in the second giant war who wanted to know everything about Camp Jupiter and all of their friends who’d outlived them. Hunters who’d died in battles he hadn’t even known about while he was still alive.
But Percy Jackson was the son of Poseidon, lord of the sea. He didn’t like being contained in one place, and even if Elysium was a paradise for heroes, it wasn’t the same as being alive.
So Percy Jackson died, and Percy Jackson was sent to Elysium, and Percy Jackson chose to be reborn.
Zak Mason was born to a single mom.
He was an ordinary baby, almost. He was born with blue eyes, but they turned brown. He laughed and cried and pooped and spat up. He started preschool with a choppy haircut he gave to himself, and loved sitting on his mom’s lap to listen to Dr. Seuss books and watching anything fast-moving and colorful on TV.
When he was six, Zak’s basketball team won against all of the other first grade teams in their town, and a big picture of his gap-toothed smile holding the trophy he’d helped win with his first three-point shot held the place of honor on the fridge for almost a year.
Sometimes, Zak Mason had nightmares he didn’t understand. Of burning pain covering his entire body, of monsters and shifting Earth and bottomless pits, of faces he didn’t recognize twisted in pain or looking down at him as he fell, of flashing swords and screams and bursts of arrows whistling towards an enemy he couldn’t quite make out. He woke up and forgot the nightmares quickly, but they always left him almost wistful for something he couldn’t quite remember, even with how terrifying they were.
As Zak grew up, he noticed things nobody else seemed to. People who were just...different in ways nobody else seemed to understand. He saw a horse with wings, flying high above the clouds while he was on an airplane. A man he swore only had one eye that winked at him when he passed him on the bus. A woman with a forked tongue poking out of her mouth on a corner who’s smile made him shiver and walk faster.
And when he was eleven, almost twelve, a man with goat legs showed up and took him away from his mom. Just for the summer, but it was still the longest he’d been away from home.
“You’re a half-blood,” the man who called himself a satyr said. “You need to learn how to defend yourself and survive.”
His mom hugged him tearfully, but helped him pack his bags and sent him away, all the way to New York from their quiet little town in Wisconsin.
He expected it to be awkward. He didn’t know anything about what this satyr, whose name was Ash, was talking about. Gods and nymphs and a camp where he would learn to swordfight and find out who his dad was? None of it made any sense at all, and so Zak spent the trip to New York dreading whatever this camp was going to be.
He and Ash walked until he saw a tree, and Zak knew, just like that, that he was home. There were plenty of trees around, but this one was tall and proud and straight, and seeing it sent a jolt of some kind of unidentifiable pride down Zak’s spine.
And Zak and Ash passed the tree on top of its hill, and Zak felt like he was home. They looked over a valley full of cabins, a lake, strawberry fields, a big blue house with a wrap-around porch, a climbing wall that seemed to be on fire, and a thick forest.
Everything that didn’t make sense on the trip here clicked in Zak’s head. This was right, this was where he was supposed to be, that was the Big House, and the climbing wall was beatable if you knew the trick, and that was the armory even though it just looked like a shed.
“How do you know all that?” Ash asked, looking confused.
Zak paused.
“I don’t know,” he said.
But this was home.
He met Chiron, the centaur, and it felt like waking up from one of his nightmares. Especially when Chiron looked at him like he already knew everything about Zak and led him around the camp he already felt like he knew backward and forwards.
He was given a space to sleep in Cabin Eleven but told he’d likely be moving soon, as his dad would claim him.
Somehow, it was instinct to head for the lake during free time and climb into a canoe. He was terrible at it, but somehow it just felt right to be out on the lake with the naiads laughing at him.
What he was good at though, was still basketball. Basketball, and archery, and he picked up how to play guitar pretty quickly, too. He loved it at Camp Half-Blood, he told his mom in every letter. He missed her, sure, but they promised he’d be able to come home for the school year.
On his twelfth birthday, a flaming lyre burned above his head.
“Hail Zak Mason, son of Apollo,” Chiron announced in a booming voice, and Zak was welcomed into Cabin Seven with open arms.
So Percy Jackson died, and Percy Jackson made it to Elysium, and Percy Jackson chose to be reborn.
And Zak Mason was born, and Zak Mason was claimed.
Zak Mason still woke up with nightmares that faded from his mind before he blinked all the way awake. Of the same burning pain, but with a face that made him smiled floating through it. Of monsters he knew by name, and names he heard in stories of heroes in the second Titan war and the second giant war.
Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena and designer of Olympus. Grover Underwood, the satyr who finally found the great god Pan. Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, and Jason Grace, son of Jupiter, and Frank Zhang, son of Mars, and Hazel Levesque, daughter of Pluto, and Piper McLean, daughter of Aphrodite.
Names that whispered “home” to him the same way Thalia’s tree did and the lake did and the entire camp did, and he wasn’t sure why.
Chiron watched Zak Mason carefully, always with an expression of almost-but-not-quite recognition. When he insulted another camper or twisted his face in a particular scowl, Chiron shook his head and turned away.
There was one name that didn’t just whisper home, it screamed it.
Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, savior of humankind, one of the most powerful demigods of the modern age.
Zak didn’t know him, how could he? He’d died protecting a group of young demigods almost two years before Zak was born.
But somehow, Zak did.
He looked in the window of Cabin Three and saw the always empty bunk bed with a minotaur’s horn hanging above it and a ballpoint pen on the pillow and he knew the stories behind them without having to ask.
He’d dreamed them, he knew it, even if he’d forgotten the dreams. Rain and lightning and a woman who disappeared in a flash of golden light, and a sword that had killed a thousand threats to people Percy Jackson loved.
Zak stared at the pen sitting on the pillow and knew it belonged in his pocket. It didn’t surprise him when he woke up with it on his own pillow the next morning, and it didn’t surprise Chiron when it continued to do so every time Zak tried to return it to the little shrine to the fallen hero called Percy Jackson.
When he practiced with Riptide in the arena, it was like every sword fighting tactic he hadn’t been able to master with any other sword came naturally.
People whispered when they saw him fighting with Riptide. Whispered of Percy Jackson, who had fought the god of war and won when he was twelve years old. Who had defeated monsters Hercules himself couldn’t. Who’d wandered Tartarus with only Annabeth Chase beside him and come out alive. Who’d stopped Kronos and Gaea and was the reason camp was so busy and full of life. Who’d given his life to save people he cared for and who’d been willing to go to the ends of the Earth or further for his friends.
And those stories felt like home in the same way camp did, in the same way all those names did and in the same way his nightmares did.
Because Percy Jackson died, and Percy Jackson made it to Elysium, and Percy Jackson was reborn as Zak Mason, son of Apollo, who would surely prove to be as much of a hero as the first body his spirit had inhabited.
Because a spirit like that of Percy Jackson couldn’t be contained to Elysium, and couldn’t be contained to one life of heroism. Not when there was the choice to be another hero whose name would feel like home in his next life when the River Lethe tried again to wipe away memories that couldn’t be erased completely.
And a spirit like that of Percy Jackson could never be anything less than a Hero of Olympus, even if it started over in a new body with a new name.

Scarlet Contract: Part 2
The Screaming Predator sailed through out the sea for a over a month now. Captain Kerrigan, Pirate Cheiftan of the Gerudo, whistled for her first mate to get to the poop deck. Before they left for the sea, she and her crew took a job in transporting a crate of 'unidentified goods'. Easy good money. They were just instructed to not look inside the box. Or touch the damn thing apparently. Every since they picked up the cargo, a contagion was being spread among the crew, leaving girls incredibly sick. The symptoms were pale skin, rashes, and vomiting blood near the end. It seemed physical contact spread it around, and when the first bodies started to stink up the place, Kerrigan became paranoid that the sickness might spread other ways. Best she deal with that effectively.
"Coco."
"Yes Captain?"
"Give me a list of the sick."
"Yes Captain." The Gerudo pulled out a chart, straining her eyes to read. It would take at least an hour for the sun to come out. "Dorethea. Padme. Rav. Anura. Evelyn."
"Alright. Bring them to the deck." The second mate did so, carefully ushering them to the deck.
Sleeping in the crows’ nest, Scarlet, 15 years of age, yawned loudly. She hated waking up before the sun was up. Peering down, she saw some of the girls being lined up next to the edge of the ship. What was going on? Weren't they put into quarantine? The more experienced crew mates lined up with the captain. "I'm sorry. There are no signs of you getting well, and treatment is unavailable. For the sake of the crew, I have to take actions to ensure the rest of our health."
Scarlet was awakened quickly as the flash and bang of gunfire went off. There were four thick splashes of water, and down below, she heard Coco swear. "Great. Now we have to throw Rav overboard ourselves. Some one pass me a pair of gauntlets and help me throw her overboard." Scarlet stayed in the crow's nest, stunned by the event that unfolded. Her own sisters executed to preserve the rest.
With another splash, Scarlet waited a full ten minutes before crawling down the crow's nest and heading into the cabins. Word was already being spread around by the officers on the fates of the sick. That it was a brutal, heartbreaking, but necessary evil. Crawling over to her best friend, Scarlet scared the crap of her at a touch.
"Fucking hell Redd! Don't sneak up on me."
"Sorry Adda."
Adda shook her head, quikly tying the back of her hair into a ponytail. "You hear what happened?"
"Worse. I saw what happened."
"Oh god. I'm... fuck Scarlet." Adda threw her smaller frame around Scarlet, hugging her close. "This whole situation is messed up. The Captain should have never taken the job. Box smelled like crap from the get go."
Scarlet knew Adda as of late loved to challenge Captain Kerrigan's role as leader. It was close to treason, but she let her vent. "I know."
"Making a quick buck instead of making smart choices. And killing our sisters? This is all so, so fucked."
"I know Adda."
"We have to-" Adda interrupted herself with a cough. Grabbing a handkerchief, she cleaned herself off by dabbing her gums. Blood was staining the blue cloth. "We have to get the piece of junk off the ship. Get the younger girls somewhere safe from Captain Kerrigan."
Scarlet winced at Adda. Dear god. She was sick. Must have been early, but the bleeding was there. Did Adda even notice? "Yeah. You're right when you're right." Scarlet watched Adda smile brightly. Although she was only ten months younger than her, she loved to take charge.
"Hell yeah I am. I'm a little tired, so I'm going to sleep until the sun is nice and out. I hate rude awakenings."
Walking away from her best friend, Scarlet rubbed the back of her neck. How many other girls were sick? When their symptoms worsened, the Captain would have them join Davy Jones locker as well. That thought terrified Scarlet. They deserved better. She would help give them better, like Adda wanted for her them. Running to the cargo hold of the ship were no one was, Scarlet grabbed a stick of dynamite. Cargo hold was reinforced with steel walls. Should contain one little explosion. She hoped.
As Captain Kerrigan was ready to steer the ship further into sea, a massive explosion sore into her ship. The back side of her boat was blown wide open. Spectacularly, no one was killed in the blast. "Everyone man your stations!!! Coco! Report to me the damage!"
Five minutes later everyone was scrambling on the ship. She could float, but if any other pirates saw them, all they'd have to do is give them a mean look and the Screaming Predator could sink. "Captain! The cargo bay was completely annihilated. A freak accident with a single stick of dynamite. We need to head into land and start repairs immediately!"
"Ey!" Captain Kerrigan took out her compass and map, looking for a chatter that'd get them off the sea as fast as a possible. Soon enough, she had her heading. "There's a land known as Omisha not too far away. We'll head there and make repairs immediately. Drop the forward sails and make ourways east!"
~
The Gerudo crew made it to the mainland in about fourteen hours of intense labor on the ship. When it hit the shore line, the Screaming Predator practically came apart. Would take at least a week of everyone working together to fix the damage. For Scarlet, she was relieved. Least this way the sick could live the rest of there lives on land, perhaps even run off further inland. And for final sights, this Omisha wasn't a bad sight. For the next three days, the Gerudo didn't stray far from the boat. They cut down trees and set to work, but everyday, from 1pm-2pm, the Captain was kind enough to give them time off to relax. Most of the women loved to patrol the beachside and swim.
Adda was taking a walk with Scarlet during such a break. Stripped down to light pants and a bra, Adda was just glad to have the sun on her face. "You been feeling alright these past few days?"
"Yeah? Why? You not?"
"The physical labour around the ship is abit straining, but other than that, I'm all good."
Scarlet laughed when Adda laughed, but she knew her sister in arms was growing unwell.
"Adda. You know, we could just leave right? If you aren't feeling good..."
Her eyes glistened with surprise, and she waved her hand off at Scarlet. "I told you. I'm good. Besides Redd, it's not my place to run. If I'm not feeling too good, I'll just chat it over with Captain Kerrigan. We can get real antiquated with each other over my problems."
Running up the beach, a pair of older Gerudo women caught up with Scarlet and Adda. "Adda. You get back to the ship. Scarlet. You're going to join us on a recon mission to search deeper inland."
"But it's not the end of our break."
One of the women immediately slapped Adda across the face. "Captain's orders. Now get back to the ship runt."
Scarlet patted Adda's back as she lowered her head and did as she was told. The reason Scarlet was asked to go into unknown territory was simple. She was one of the few Gerudo on board with magical capabilities, as well as trained in the arts of the Iron Knuckle. Scarlet wasn't skilled enough to summon armour onto her, but she was capable enough to transport her battle axe to her. "Should we go back to the ship to suit up?"
"No time. Captain wants us to go search now. Food or treasure is the objective. Need to make up for the lost cargo." Nodding, Scarlet took off over the hillside and into the jungle with the older Gerudo.
The shaman was certainly enjoying the view of the beautiful ladies naked in the ocean. From his spying, he was able to come to a few conclusions. The ship ran aground due to structural problems, the women were trying to fix it, and a handful were very sick. Some were only little girls, it seemed. He pitied them, having to play adult at such a young age. Yet, there was still the present problem of the women actually being here. Mother did not allow humans in her land, at least, not anymore. Usually, humans were devoured on sight. Though, these women did not seem to be causing any trouble, other than trying to chop down part of their forest. He decided to leave them be unless curiosity got the best of them.
And unfortunately, it did.
As the women progressed further into the jungle, Bonegrinder knew he had to act. Too many Echidnans had lost their lives to humans. If this beach became known as a popular spot to store treasure or take a pit stop, the risk would increase. Humans were naturally curious creatures, and that would result in their demise in this land. Mother said that he could either scare them away or kill them. Two choices, and he decided to try the less messy alternative first. In a rather dramatic way.
The first woman he slipped his tail around her ankle and pulled her into the bushes, earning a terrified scream. She tried firing at him, but he snapped the gun in half and threw her into a muddy pit. Now, she'd be focused on getting away with no weapon in hand. The second lady, he pulled her up from a tree branch with his long body, hanging upside down. Yelling, she thrashed wildly to get free, trying to take a shot. He dropped her, swatting her with his tail into a tree, just enough to hurt. Hissing, he was successful in scaring the two women away... but now, there was the issue of the kid. To her, he was horrifying.
"Child..." Bonegrinder growled as she held up the axe, shaking a finger at her. "Don't play into the hands of stupidity. Leave."
It happened so fast for Scarlet. Out of the cover of the jungle, it came alive and threw them about. Felicia was the first to get thrown about, falling into the mud. Grekal was injured in the attack, scampering away to leave the others to themselves. Scarlet snapped her fingers and a giant battle axe appeared in her hands, ready to chop down on this jungle predator. The appearance of this monster was chilling to bone, and Scarlet was shaking in her boots, yet she stood tall. Her eyes were careful to watch the monster's tail, as well as his face. "Back off you scaly abomination!"
"He really doesn't want to eat you, but Kasdeya, Mother of the Monsters, the Many, she wants you gone from her lands." Bonegrinder slithered closer, not bothered by her trembling threat. "He can't really blame her either. Humans are pests. Now, are you going to run back to your shipmates and inform them to leave?"
Scarlet wasn't expecting it to speak. Taking a stance, when Bonegrinder drew too close, she swung her axe. "Back. Off. We'll take what we need to repair. And I'm not letting a monster hurt anyone else."
This was annoying. Was he really going to have to dispose of a tiny, weakling child? She acted fierce but her heart rate begged to differ. When the girl tried to strike him with her axe, Bonegrinder moved swiftly, wrapping his tail around the handle and yanking the weapon away from the young one.
"He told you to leave. Mother does not want you here, humans are a plague upon this land." The shaman snarled, exposing his fangs and unlocking his jaw. "We will not let them kill anymore of our brethren. He will not repeat himself again. This snake is giving you a chance to escape with your life like the other two."
Scarlet screamed and closed, scrambling about. Instead of running towards the beach, she ran deeper into the jungle as a way to get away from Bonegrinder.
"Ah! Idiot girl, that is the wrong way!" Bonegrinder exclaimed, running a hand down his face. "He swears Mother gives him these tasks just to get a rise out of him. Why can't more children be like that Mortuus child in his catacombs?" He stopped for a moment, realizing how foolish that made him sound. "On second thought, she is considered odd compared to other children." Grumbling, the shaman muttered, "Now, he has to play babysitter before she gets swallowed by a Jawstalk Mantrap. Mother doesn't want any skeletons lying around. No evidence."
Scarlet was falling down hillside, getting branches smacked in her face, and tumbling through bushes. Finally, she thought she made enough distance between herself and the monster and hid underneath a fallen log.
This was akin to children hiding under their beds in Hyrule. Bonegrinder sighed, exasperated. This was going to take some drastic measures. Finally, he yanked her out from underneath the log, his coils wrapped around her so she could not escape, arms and legs pinned. "You are very annoying."
Scarlet screamed so loud it rang Bonegrinder's ear drums and rattled his skull. "Dear god no! Please, no, no, no, no, no!"
Slapping a hand over her mouth, the shaman held the side of his head.
"Good Mother Goddess, girl! Shut up!" Bonegrinder snapped. "Why are children so damn loud? Either that, or have a pair of lungs that could pierce eardrums, by Kaksa." The shaman started slithering back in the direction of the beach. "You are idiotic, girl. He told you to go back to the beach, but no, you run into the jungle. There are some other kin of his who might not be so kind to a human child." He took another sniff of her trapped form. "Hrm. You've got the scent of womanhood, but still not mated. Thus, still a child, like he deuced." Once he was finally at the line of the jungle, he uncoiled his body from around the young girl. Giving her a shove with his tail, Bonegrinder told her, "Stay out of the jungle. Mother does not care for humans, and this snake is not fond of them, but he doesn't like to hurt children." Then, he tossed the axe at her feet. "And quit playing with dangerous weapons unless you really know how to swing that thing. Magic or not, it won't do you any good unless you stop doubting yourself." Muttering to himself, the snake started to slither back into the jungle. If the women trespassed again, then he would have to cause actual harm. Or eat them.
Scarlet whimpered as she sauntered back to the boat. "Captain needs to bomb this place. Need to get Adda on the ship..."
Bonegrinder watched as the three women swore up and down of the existence of the devil, firstly, then shadow creature, secondly, and last but not least, a mutated snake creature. He thought it was amusing, the young kid begging the captain to believe her. Humans had long forgotten the residents of Omisha, yet there were plenty of tales to keep them from entering the vast jungle. Hopefully, this would keep them at bay.
"Captain, please! There be monsters in the jungle!"
"Fine. We can repair the ship, then dump the last of the sick here."
Scarlet's eyes widened. "No captain! No one else is sick!"
"Unlikely. Everyone knows the risk. I won't infect the healthy members Scarlet. Now, you've had a long afternoon. Get your ass back to work on the ship."
Scarlet did so, trying to think of a way to save Adda and the others.
~
It was getting dark with the sun setting. Maybe a night or two left until the crew was finished. When they were alone on the ship, Adda hugged her from behind, careful to only have clothing on clothing contact. "Scarlet. I appreciate all you've done for me. Really. But I'm not gonna risk the rest of the crew. When the time comes, I'll lead the sick into an island expedition. It should be fun."
"But Adda..." Scarlet turned to her, feeling like a failure of a protective sister. They weren't bound by blood, but they were sisters in arms, bound by sea, sweat, and tears. "I can't stand the thought of you out there in that jungle alone."
"Hey. We could always take over the ship the-" Her smile shattered as she suddenly coughed.
As Scarlet stepped away, Adda finished her fit. Turning her head back up, she smiled with blood in her teeth. "You should probably go get some fresh air away from me Scarlet. I'll be fine on my own for a bit."
Crying, Scarlet ran off. She wanted to be anywhere but the one place she felt helpless. Getting off the ship she ran to a tree on the beach where she could cry her thoughts away.
The women were still here. Bonegrinder considered just storming the camp to scare the daylights out of them. Perhaps that would prove a point. Was his warning not enough? Then, he saw the girl from before. Now, she was crying for the sake of her sister. Bored, this caught the shaman's attention. She was too preoccupied to notice him, already up in the palm tree. "Girl." Bonegrinder spoke, flicking the tip of his tail back and forth. "Is he really going to have to eat someone to prove a point? He told you and your like to leave."
"Majora on high!" Scarlet backed away on her hands and legs. "Please don’t hurt us! We need to make repairs to our ship!"
"That he has observed by you taking trees from our jungle." Bonegrinder picked at his teeth with a claw. Dinner was rather chewy. Wild deer was not his favorite, but it would do for now. "Though this captain bitch of yours has talked of leaving some humans here and this is not acceptable. Omisha is a land for monsters, and only monsters. Humans have wrought enough here." The Anagari's redd eyes were glowing in the dark. "Why haven't you used your magic to speed along the process? You have it. He can sense it."
“We don’t have that kind of magic. And speed along what? The construction of the ship, or the deaths of the sick?”
"The construction of the ship," Bonegrinder was definitely explaining things to a child. "By healing the sick."
“We can’t! We don’t have that kind of magic! Why do you even care?” Scarlet didn’t even realize she was yelling.
"Are humans really so fragile?" Bonegrinder mused as he slithered down the tree. "He cares for the safety of his kin. Yet, he supposes that children are innocents." He glanced at the young ones separated from the group because of the coughing. "Little ones who have yet to see the horrors this world offers."
“You care? What can you do that we can’t?”
"For one, he can fight." Bonegrinder chuckled. "And for two, he can use magic."
"I can do both of those things." Scarlet stood up, adrenaline cutting through her fear. "How can that help us?"
"Child, you've yet to learn of what you need to survive, much less ways to help others." Bonegrinder was crass, but truthful. "You are naught but a little girl." He then stated less harshly, "This snake needs you all to go, yet, he does not wish to harm anyone if he can help it. Most of you are children. Merely, scare you away from these sacred lands." He then asked, "If you wish to learn to fight, then you have to be brutal and be willing to take down one before a strike is allowed at those you care for." The snake eyed the heartless captain. "If you wish to learn how to control your magic, you must let go of your doubt. Magic is tied to the soul. You do not have confidence in yourself and must overcome the fear of failure." He extended his tail to Scarlet. "If he aids you, you must leave and tell no one of this place."
"I'm not going anywhere with you. If you think you're so great, then tell me. Can you heal my sisters? I don't have that kind of magic in me. No Gerudo has the magic to heal."
Bonegrinder actually laughed at the girl's statement. This was certainly more fun than having to swallow a human whole. Perhaps there was a deal here he could take advantage of for the future. Ah, yes, he could see it... "Oh, little child, you are quite bold to insult this snake." The shaman then twirled a single finger in the air, allowing a line of magic to flow. "You wish for him to heal your sisters? Then you must know his magic will come with a price."
Scarlet thought to Adda. Thought about how she never had family she could love until she met her. She was the face that she wanted to see smile properly for years to come. As much as this monster terrified her, perhaps he could be a source of salvation. "Anything."
"Anything could lead you to ruin, little one. Yet, Bonegrinder will venture to be merciful." The shaman held up his massive clawed hand, magic shimmering around it. "Years from now, you will be loved. You will have a family. You will not wish to leave them for an upcoming battle against discord." He knew she would not understand the implications until later on in her life. "You will pledge yourself to the queen of dragons and fire, host of the one who will bring back Balance. You will fight for her and become a queen in your own right." The snake's tail flicked in anticipation. "In return, this snake will heal your sisters and... dispose of the captain. Do we have a deal?"
"Deal! We have a deal!" Scarlet was clamoring to shake his hand.
"Then the deal is struck." Bonegrinder took the young girl's hand and a line of text traveled down Scarlet's arm. It wrapped around her upper arm, tattooing itself into her skin, in the shape of a snake. Once again, he had the opportunity to add to the advantage of his side for the future battle. "Now... drug your ill sisters with these after you lure them over here." He held up a bottle of sweet tasting coconut juice laced with poppies. "It will lull them to sleep and he will heal them."
Scarlet frowned, looking at the tattoo. "I'm not into ink."
"Don't worry, they won't see it." Bonegrinder then instructed Scarlet. "You better hurry. With that sickness, there will be permanent damage if you don't act fast."
Scarlet ran back down to the ship. Supper was being prepared for the whole crew. Clam soup. Realizing what Bonegrinder wished for would be impossible, she didn't know what to do. Adda saw Scarlet with the bottle and pulled her to the side. "What do you have there?"
"Huh?!" Scarlet hid it behind her back in a flash. "Nothing."
"That's a crock of shit and you know it."
"Fine. It's to help the crew relax."
Adda raised a brow, and a cheeky smile filled her face. "Scarlet, you minx~ Why didn't you tell me you wanted to have some fun." Grabbing the bottle from her, Adda carefully danced around the crew and poured the contents of the bottle into the soup. "This is going to be fantastic. You steal these drugs from the Captain?"
"Something like that." Scarlet patiently waited for everyone to have supper and go on there way. Within the hour, everyone who had eaten, except her, well deep asleep. The teenage pirate made her way to the deck of the ship and waved Bonegrinder to come over. As she waited, she cradled Adda next to her.
"You, little child, are quite devious." Bonegrinder climbed over the side of the ship, his weight causing the wood to creak loudly. "Goodness, and he thought he snored loudly." He noted a few females with mouths open, louder than hogs. "Lay the sick flat for him on their backs. It's easier to access the lungs that way."
"I didn't know what to do to get them away from the ship. Adda here actually thought of spiking the soup." Scarlet lugged all the crew members who were sick and did as she was asked. Finally, she prepared to lie down herself. Didn’t know if she was sick too.
"This one..." Bonegrinder looked at Adda, and frowned. "Is trouble." He told Scarlet as he started on the first ill lady, his hands pulsing with a white glow. "You should stay away from her."
"She's my best friend." Scarlet frowned back.
"She will cause you nothing but trouble and pain." Bonegrinder would not reveal too much, and halted when he arrived to Adda. He tapped her forehead with his tail. "Something tells me this one is half conscious." He stated dryly. "Loopy. She might mention something along the lines of a demon or a snake when she wakes."
"Whooooos that?"
"A doctor Adda."
"Yeah? Helloooooo nurse~"
Scarlet wasn't surprised. Adda was able to handle her substance abuse.
"Shaman, not doctor." Bonegrinder arched an eyebrow. "You need to quit squirming so he can help you clear your lungs."
"Noooo that tickles. He's going to hurt me."
Scarlet held Adda down, rubbing her back gently. "It's ok Adda."
"I don't want him to hurt me."
"I won't let him. I won't let anyone hurt you."
"Stop being such a crybaby, you'll be fine." Bonegrinder snapped at Adda. "He told you to hold still." As Scarlet made sure to hold her friend steady, the shaman worked his healing technique. It was not long before the disease was out of Adda's lungs. "She should be fine, but he will warn you, this one will only cause you trouble."
"And I'm not listening. Thank you. You should go now."
Scarlet carefully set the crew back into non-suspicious positions. It took any hour of heaving people back and forth. Finally, she crawled into bed, exhausted from the haul. The very next morning, Captain Kerrigan called the crew to a meeting. It was a miracle among the heavens as she called it. Every girl reported clean and healthy across the board. Captain Kerrigan didn't pry too much into it. Meant less people needed to be killed. Once the ship was fixed, she stabbed a flag into the beach, a symbol for danger at your own risk.
Sailing out, Adda poured Scarlet a drink of cheap rum. "Too health and getting off monster island."
"Adda, it's a continent."
"And all land is surrounded by water. Hence an island."
Scarlet's face turned into puzzlement at that. "Hmm, I never thought of it. I guess you're right."
"Of course I'm right. Now, lets drink."
~
"And so, that was the closest Adda came to death at the time. It was only a year later that I helped her in a mutiny against Captain Kerrigan. The crew loved Adda, so we were more than happy to appoint her Captain."
Greta pulled on Volcania's shirt to pay more attention. "That's cool momma."
"... a giant snake monster, Momma?" Lovisa looked puzzled. "We don't have any snake men here, do we, Mama?"
"Not unless one has been hibernating for a very long time." Borghild shook her head. "The closest thing to a snake here is probably an ice salamander. They freeze during the winter and thaw in the spring."
"Why did they pick Adda and not you? You saved them." Greta asked.
"Because I didn't tell anyone I saved them. And because I'm not a leader Greta." Scarlet rubbed her hands together. "Adda was the one with the charisma, drive, and brains to lead. As for the snake monster, it lives only in Omisha."
Rat, however, was beginning to sweat buckets. Corsaire worked with Orana's brother, the nefarious Ralnor. The blonde prince gave the ex-gladiator the creeps and more than once, Corsaire had mentioned something in passing about Ralnor working with... monsters. At the time, Rat thought Corsaire meant the scum of the earth, mercenaries, or humans with cruel tendencies. Now, he was beginning to think Corsaire meant in a literal sense. Many times, his captain had mentioned meeting a giant... he gulped. A giant snake.
"Did you ever meet this giant snake again?" Scarlet looked at Lovisa and glanced at Rat with a tell she was about to lie. "No sweety. I didn't need to meet that terrifying monster ever again. Any other questions girls?"
"What was the deal about? It sounded like he was talking in riddles." Lovisa questioned her stepmother. "Do all monsters really talk like that? Or was he just like... tricking you?"
"Probably just needed some money from me in the future. Or good food. Monsters are fickle things."
"Did Adda ever meet him? Or remember him?" Lovisa was still full of questions.
"Yeah, after all, she was a little loopy, but could still recall bits and pieces." Greta remarked.
Scarlet shrugged. She knew it would endanger her family to mention the Hive. Rumours still flew around that made her skin crawl. "Not that I know sweety."
"How big was he? Did he have fangs bigger than Mama?" Lovisa pointed to her mother.
"What color were his scales? Why did he talk so funny? Did you see any other mons-"
"Lovisa, me darling, stop asking your Momma so many questions." Rat picked up his daughter and gently sat her on his knee. "Me knows you're curious, love, but not all these questions have answers."
"Sorry." Lovisa seemed a little bashful after that. She loved a good story.
"Momma?" Greta looked at Scarlet. "... if he knew Adda was going to be trouble, why did he save her?"
"Because I asked him to."
"But he didn't have to."
"Greta, lassie, please, don't pester your mother."
"Well, I gave him a mean, stern look that shook him to his bones to do so. Kind of like this." Scarlet gave a mean, silly scowl to Greta to show off.
"... Momma, that won't work on me, I'm your kid." At that statement, Rat and Borghild had to hold back a stifled laugh.
"Well. Fine then. He had to keep his word or our deal would be void. I wanted Adda healed and that was that."
"Magic seems complicated." Lovisa remarked with a yawn. She was definitely a grizzly bear like her mother, cuddling into her father. It was time for a nap after riding around on the ship.
"Well, do you regret saving Adda?" Volcania asked.
Fuck. Scarlet rubbed her hands again, anxiety filling her. "Should anyone regret sparing a life?"
"That's not what I asked. I asked if you regret saving Adda."
Lovisa and Greta were quiet when Volcania asked her mother this question. It seemed... pretty harsh.
"You've been talking with Revy and Liz again haven't you." As Volcania opened her mouth, Scarlet spoke first. "No. I don't. If I didn't save Adda, none of you would have been born."
Lovisa and Greta exchanged glances, the girls knowing that Adda was generally a taboo to speak about in the family. Yet, they also understood some of Volcania's curiosity. After all, her father was Bomba, Captain Corsaire's first mate and demolitions expert. He could make some of the finest gunpowder in the world from what the younger girls were told. But, thanks to Adda and that evil dragon, she never got to meet him.
"Adda was my best friend....” Closing her eyes, she decided to end this conversation. “Rat. Raise the anchor. I want to see you girls put the boat parked back into the harbour."
It took a little longer than expected, but the girls managed to get the ship back into the port. It was quiet on the way back. Borghild kept the girls occupied so Rat could talk to Scarlet. Bomba was always a touchy subject. "Me lovey..." Rat approached Scarlet once the girls and Borghild disembarked the ship. "You gonna be okay?"
"Yeah. Do you think I'm a bad seed or stupid in the head because I still care for Adda?"
"No. It's hard to a-forget the good memories even with bad ones still present, lassie." Rat told Scarlet with a sigh. "Me still loves me brother Renegade... well, tis Faris now. We were separated long ago, but reunited. Dere's nothing I would a-do for him. He's got a good life now with Teb and his little wee one, Skyla."
"But Faris doesn't have people calling him a bastard, a bitch, a monster. Or anyone that worked for him a cu-" Scarlet paused, stopping herself. She needed to breathe and calm herself down. "It's not the same."
"Aye, you's right, lassie, tis not the same." Rat put an arm around Scarlet and pulled her in for a close hug. "You's done stuff you's regretted, so has I. You's doing good now with the girls, me, Borgie, we all love you. If you hadn't of done what you did... me doubts you'd be here with us."
"I know. I know." Scarlet sighed, as she hugged him close. Suddenly, a stone in her pocket was shaking. Pulling it out, a voice echoed out to her.
"Hey ma. We still having dinner together?"
That was today? Scarlet spoke back into the whispering stone. "Yes Revy. We'll be over in an hour. You and your bird won't have to wait for long."
"Maybe tis do you good to go see Revy and Seija." Rat kissed Scarlet's forehead. "Go see her. Don't worry, we'll care for the girls."
"What? You don't want to join us?"
Rat did not have the heart to tell Scarlet that his back was hurting. Getting old really sucked. "Borghild was going to go hunting and someone needs to watch Lovisa and Greta." He gave her a smile. "Go on. I don't want you to a-miss the fun."
"And Volcania? Growing worried. She's old enough to be approached by men now. And you know how Direnor heat can be. Maybe she should come with me."
"You think her father didn't teach her how to swing a mace?" Rat chuckled. "She a good fighter like her old man and her mother. But if you want her to go with you, then take her. I'm sure she'd love to see her big sis for a while too."
"Volcania!"
"Yeah?!" She shouted back. "We're visiting your big sister!"
Volcania sparked up. "Awesome!"
Scarlet sighed, glad that was dealt with and started brushing her hair back. She stopped cutting it a long time ago, gone the days of shaved down sides. It felt good to just get her hands in there at times. "Anything you need from Revy Mousa?"
"Just tell her to come visit her old man soon." Rat assured Scarlet. "We'll be fine at home. Just have a good time with our lassie, yes? And tell her we want grandkids."
"You have the whole orphanage."

This went down hill but I thought you all deserved something. I’m working on a second part to my Elijah Mikaelson series but I’m not making promises it’ll be posted soon. School holidays are coming up in 2 weeks and I’ll try and get more down than. Happy Easter.
To the people of London, today was inconsequential. When the barista at your favourite coffee shop gave you your drink, there was no pity in his practiced smile. When a woman ran into you on the street, there was no sorrow in her eyes. When your coworkers greeted you, there was no hatred in their voices, to them it was just another day, another day of work, another day to mark off their calendars when they arrived home to their families that night. Nobody thought much of today, it was just another Wednesday. But you knew if you went to the little pub on Charing Cross road, the one with the wooden cauldron hanging above the door, if you went out the back and tapped the right bricks in the right order than you would find another world, a world with funny dressed people, all of which wore somber expressions on their faces, becuase today wasn’t another day to them.
Today was May 2nd, and nobody in London cared, except you.
Your heart was torn in two. A part of you wanted to continue, act like this day held no meaning, as if lives weren’t lost and destroyed today because of the monster you shared blood with, that it was all a horrible dream that you had during your youth. That was why you were here, not there. Here, the name Riddle didnt earn you heated glares, it held no more importance than the name Potter, it was nothing. You needed the normalacy of a muggle life, and that is what you got, a job you didnt have to deceive people for, friends who didnt fear you, neighbours who waved at you each morning as you left your nice house. You were free from your father, nobody cowered away from you here, nor did they obey your every command. But there was one thing missing, one thing you could not easily replace, him.
Placing you under the protection of Draco Malfoy was the single good thing your father had ever done for you. He believed sending you to Hogwarts would make you a bigger asset, so he sent you to the school with a single mission; help him destroy Harry Potter. Of course, him being sorted into the house of his father and you being sorted into the house of yours did not help you become close to the boy who lived, in fact he quite hated you, even though you weren’t using your father’s name. You didnt hate Potter, you pitted him for all he had to go through and such a young age, but he hatred for all Slytherins, even if they had done nothing towards him or his friends, caused a dislike for him to grow. This brought you and Draco closer.
Draco knew who you were, of course. At first he acted respectful, partially due to the fear of the Dark Lord his father had instilled in him, but soon enough the two of you became friends, the Prince and Princess of Slyhterin (nicknames you never let your father hear).
Voldemort was back, Cedric Diggory killed by his faithful man servant, Peter Pettigrew, Harry Potter was right but ignorant minds marked him as a liar. This was the year of Umbridge, the sickly pink toad that even Slytherins hated, Dumbledore’s Army had been created, the few who believed in Harry’s story followed him, as he taught in the absence of a real defense against the dark arts teacher. This was the time i hated being me the most, a Slytherin, hated by Potter therefore stuck learning form the cat lady, and Voldemort’s child, now that he was back, he was more vocal than ever, constantly reminding me of what i had to do; help him destroy Harry Potter. It most certainly didnt help that my so called protector/ best friend was wondering the halls, looking for Potter under the command of a toad.
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
Turning away from the underwater veiw of the Slytherin common room, i looked at Draco. His white hair, usually slicked back was now in soft waves, shirt untucked, silver and green tie hanging loosely around his neck, normally smug lips downturned in a frown as his grey eyes swam with concern and exhaustion, he had probably just finshed his rounds.
“What ever could be wrong Draco? My life is just unicorns on rainbows pooping candy.”
Draco smiled slightly at your sarcastic tone, shaking his head in amusement as he sat down next to you. His arms wrapped around your waist, a gesture that wasn’t uncommon between the two of you, and he pulled your cold body into his warm one.
“Why are you always so sarcastic?’
“Sarcasm is the body’s defence against stupidity.”
Draco sat straight, pulling you completely on his lap. His chin nuzzled into your neck, smelling the perfume he had chosen and given to you last year on your birthday. He smiled.
“Are you calling me stupid?”
His tone was light hearted, barely containing a laugh, so you knew he didn’t take offence. Grinning, you decided to play along. This was the side of the Slytherin Prince that so few got to see, a side that, not to your knowledge, only came out when you are in his presence.
“You are by far the stupidest person i have ever met, and I know Crabbe and Goyle.”
"Are you trying to make me hate you?"
He couldnt hold back his laugh this time. A hearty laugh. The two of you laughed together, so long for something so stupid, but neither of you cared. Whipping a tear from your eye, you leant back into Draco’s chest, giving into the peace it provided you. Draco’s laugh died down to a few chuckles, a grin plastered on his face. You looked back at him.
“I hate you.”
“No, you dont. You love me."
Something inside Draco snapped. He loved you, he knew he did and seeing you in his arms, a happy glowsurrounding you, his heart rose to his throat and he finally got the courage to speak the three words stuck on the tip of his tongue since the day he met you.
“(Y/n), I do lo-“
“Don’t say you love me.”
Those words echoed in his mind. His grey eyes instantly turned cold, his heart building walls around itself. You could see his pain, you had known him longer enough to know his tells and your heart broke at the pain he was feeling in that moment. Turning yourself around, you clasped his hand tightly in your own. Draco looked away, feeling the tears beginning to burn his eyes. He couldn’t let you see. Cupping his check softly, you turned his face to yours, tears reflecting in each others eyes.
“I’m not somebody you should fall in love with Draco. I cant protect you. If my father were ever to find out-“
"He won’t find out."
Draco’s voice was loud, making you grateful that you were alone in the common room. Passion blazed behinds as he took your cheeks in his hands. His heart was beating through his chest. He was afraid of your father, but he refused to live another day that he could not call you his own.
“I love you (y/n). Just say it back, we can find a way to make this work. Please”
Your mouth opened. How could you say it? Telling Draco you loved him would seal his fate, if your father ever found out he wouldn’t kill Draco, he would destroy him. He had no idea what your father was truly capable of. But staring at the boy you loved, seeing him so raw, pleading for you to say those three simple words, how could you not?
It didnt last. Your love was doomed from the beginning, you knew this. Draco and you spent two years together, filled with bliss and hardships. It all ended five years ago today. The battle had be won, your father was dead and everybody knew who you were. Some people protected you, but most wanted you to pay for your father’s crimes.
You ran that day, into the forbidden forest until you could run anymore. Harry found you on the ground, sobbing and covered in scratches and bruises. He walked towards you slowly, cautious of the wand you had pointed at him. With his hands held above his head, he made you an offer. Leave. If you left the wizarding world, he would do his best to secure your safety. You agreed.
Five years had past and not a single day went by when Draco didn’t cross your mind. Leaving him that day had been your biggest regret. You sat at home, watching the rain fall, the burning wood in your fireplace keeping you warm. If you closed you eyes you could almost image Draco's arms around you as you both sat in the Slytherin common room that night. Draco was alive, and yet everyday you mourned him, your heart yearned to see him just one more time. Your gaze drifted to the fire.
In Malfoy Manor Draco sat alone. The leather chair in which he sat was uncomfortable but Draco couldn’t bring himself to move, not even to relight the fire, the only source of light and heat in the dark house, a house too big for one man. Every day since you had died he felt numb. He wouldn’t let himself feel happy without you, not even his beloved mother could get him to smile. Now he mourns her as he mourns you. He couldn’t even bring himself to cry.
The sudden source of light burned his eyes. People rarely visited Draco. Sometimes Harry and the other members of the golden trio would visit, out of guilt more than anything else he assumed. But they wouldn’t be here tonight, Draco liked to mourn alone, and they should be mourning their losses with their families. Beleiving the worse, Draco sent a curse in the direction of his fireplace, not noticing the female figure the emerged from the flames.
"Have you lost your damn mind? Lumos."
The light from your wand illuminated the room. It took a few seconds for Draco's eyes to adjust but he knew that voice. Draco’s wand dropped to the floor. He couldn’t take your eyes from you, afraid to blink. You looked so real but Draco refused to believe it was truly you.
"Draco."
You moved towards him slowly, worried. Your hands touch his shoulder lightly once you met him, sliding them up to cup his cheeks. He puts his hand over yours, pressing firmly against it, feeling your skin on his. You were real and for the first time in years, Draco cried.
"I thought you were dead."
Draco pulled away from you, keeping his arms around your waist, not willing to let go. He looked pale, thin. It was obvious that he hadn’t been taking care of himself. Your thumb rubbed his cheek slowly.
"I know. I made a mistake but I can promise you, I’m never leaving again."

Episode 1x01 Recap
Warning: Sackfuls of spoilers, obviously. A dash of affectionate sarcasm, not so obviously. Also, lots of words. Sorry. I was aiming for no more than 1,000 and ended up double that. Oops.
The episode starts in a supermarket car park at night, which is where all good pilot episodes start – at night, that is, not in a car park. A woman runs, screaming, from something we can't see at first. It's a dinosaur and boy, is it unhappy.
If your instincts are telling you not to like the woman even though she seems like the victim in this scene, you've got bloomin' good instincts. Well done, you. This woman is Helen Cutter, and we'll find out more about her later.
She tries to get the attention of a cleaner in the supermarket but he's listening to music really, really loudly through his headphones. Too loudly, really. He'll damage his hearing but that's neither here nor there. The dinosaur in the car park is out to do damage to a lot more than that.
Helen tries to hide, the dinosaur roars... Roll the opening credits on the first episode of our lovely show.
(If you're not playing the theme tune in your head right now, you are totally lying. Or perhaps less obsess-y than I am. Hmm.)
It's daylight now, and a beautiful day by all accounts. No dinosaurs or supermarkets insight. We are also reliably informed that it is eight years later, which never really made sense to me since the dinosaur from the pre-credits scene appears later on but I digress. I get it's the same anomaly opening in the same spot years later but... Anyway. On with the recap!
A car/jeep comes to a stop. It has 'Department of Evolutionary Zoology' on the side. Helpful. We see a man get out – this is Professor Nick Cutter. He's joined by another man, Stephen Hart. The text on the screen helpfully informs us they're at the Central Metropolitan University, which is a very futuristic building considering this was filmed ten years ago at time of recapping.
Nick and Stephen are colleagues, and friends. It's apparent in the way they talk to each other. As they walk into the building, they're approached by another man running towards them – this is Connor Temple. He's a student at the University and wants to talk to Professor Cutter about his paper, which we soon find has been filed in the circular filing cabinet known as Cutter's bin. On Cutter's desk, there's a photograph of Helen... Not surprising, really, since she is his wife.
Connor, Nick and Stephen talk. Nick and Stephen clearly aren't taking him seriously. Connor pulls out a newspaper and shows them the headline 'MONSTER HOAX or Truly Beastly?' Accompanying the headline is a picture of what appears to be the dinosaur from the pre-credits scene.
Nick isn't impressed in the slightest. Neither is Stephen. Their attention is only caught when Connor mentions it's near the Forest of Dean, which is where Helen disappeared some eight years before...
Scene change, and we meet Brad and Angelina, who won't get it on. No, not that Brad and Angelina – these are lizards, and in meeting them, we meet zookeeper Abby Maitland. Abby is trying to encourage them but clearly holds little hope. Her boss comes to talk to her about a photograph they've been sent from the family of a young boy who'd like their help identifying an unusual lizard he's found...
... That lizard will later be known as Rex. He's a cutie. We all want a Rex, right?
Abby looks at the photo and knows what she's looking at isn't a breed usually found in England so agrees to go and check it out.
Another scene change, and we're back with the boys. Nick, Stephen and Connor are joined by a security guard as they study a lorry that's clearly seen better days on a road near the Forest of Dean. They find slaughtered chickens and suspiciously non-knife-made slash marks in the lorry's tarp. Stephen finds blood (but thankfully doesn't taste it, apparently it's not as nice as bird poop but that's another episode...)
They look towards the forest where a heavy duty metal fence has been bent out of shape by something very, very big.
Back to Abby, driving her very cute Mini. She arrives at a nice looking house on a nice looking estate, where Ben, the boy in the photograph with the unidentified lizard, lives with his mum, the latter of whom is waiting for Abby. In Ben's bedroom, the lizard is playing hard to get but eventually makes himself known to Abby, chirping happily as if he knows he's found his new Mummy. Rex is not only an usual lizard – he can also fly.
Ben takes Abby to the place he found Rex, which is... dun, dun, dun... the Forest of Dean. They walk through the misty forest, with Rex wrapped in Abby's scarf because the poor little thing doesn't like the cold. They discover a dead cow in a tree and since cows can't a) fly and b) climb trees, Abby knows there's something amiss. They hear a strange sound and Ben starts to run, so Abby has no choice but to follow.
Scene change, and we're at the Eddington Hotel – again in the Forest of Dean. Nick is at a bar, drinking and looking at the photo of Helen he has in his wallet. Claudia Brown is also at the bar and, desperate to escape the company of the man chatting her up, approaches Nick and kisses him, before asking him to go along with it and be her cover.
This is the beginning of a beautiful albeit short lived relationship. They drink (scotch/whisky for him, white wine for her) and talk blurry supposed dinosaur photos. Claudia works for the government and has been sent out to the Forest of Dean to investigate but is very sceptical; she thinks they're faked and is surprised an intelligent man like Cutter could potentially believe they're real.
They meet up with Connor and Stephen, the former of whom has a 'Comprehensive Database' of dinosaurs on his laptop. We know this because it says at the top of the screen 'comprehensive database'. It also shows pictures of water-based dinosaurs, which is not what we're dealing with – at least in this episode.
Claudia is still sceptical and possibly wondering how to get the three men committed.
Back with Ben, Abby and Rex, we find Ben has outrun Abby and lost her. Abby trips and drops Rex, who scurries away. While she's looking for him and Ben, Ben finds a strange portal with glowing shards of light. He does what any kid would do in such a situation and sticks his head through. (Obviously.)
On the other side, he sees a prehistoric world with lots of flying Rex's and is in awe. Returning to the present, he hears the noise again and runs. Abby, meanwhile, is searching for Rex. He chirps a warning and she freezes just in time to see the reflection of a dinosaur in a pool of water.
Nick, Stephen, Claudia and Connor are exploring the forest. They come across the dead cow in the tree and are also baffled. Well, Nick, Stephen and Claudia are baffled. Connor is distracted by his compass going haywire, which he shows to Nick.
Ben has made it out of the forest as night begins to fall. He sees his house and climbs over a fence but cuts his hand in the process. After giving it a cursory glance, he runs for home and we next see him in his room. There's a noise outside and we see condensation/steam against the window. Ben backs away as a dinosaur – a Gorgonopsid, in case you're interested – breaks the window and tries to get to Ben, having caught the scent of blood. Ben backs away as the Gorgonopsid continues its attempts to get to him, causing havoc before getting a mild electric shock from a light. The Gorgonopsid backs away as Ben stares in horror at the hole in his bedroom wall.
Abby and Rex, meanwhile, are still in the forest. It's pitch black at this point and they're lost. They hear and see a dinosaur and freeze. This is not the Gorgonopsid that we recently saw attacking Ben but rather a Scutosaurus. Still big, not as scary.
As Abby stares at the Scutosaurus, she realises she's not alone with it: Nick, Stephen, Claudia and Connor have also arrived. All of them, with the exception of Claudia, are awestruck. Claudia is the only one with the sense to be less awed and more afraid.
Rex chirps, sensing the attention isn't on him. Nick and Stephen obligingly crouch to admire him.
Scene change. Claudia is trying to call for support and explain the situation, which is hard to do when the person on the other end of the phone obviously thinks she's insane. Nick and Abby, meanwhile, are trying to explain the situation to Ben's mother, who for some reason thinks her son is making it all up and could've caused so much damage to his own room. How, I don't know. He's a kid, not the Hulk.
The Scutosaurus is soon on the move, and leads the reunited team to the anomaly Ben saw and described, though no one believed him. They're all, again, in awe, except for Claudia, who looks like she wants to get on the next flight anywhere but there. That's a good thought, Claudia, I wish you'd followed through with it and come back when Helen Cutter is a thing of the past (literally, ha.)
Daybreak comes. They're all still out in the Forest, guarding the anomaly. Captain Tom Ryan (hi, Captain Ryan!) appears, having been sent by the Home Office to stand guard.
Stephen and Abby do a little flirting. Nick and Claudia do a little flirting. It's a sad, sad thing that neither of these couples stood a chance. (Though, in the grander scheme of things, the demise of one of this relationships is a good thing at least as far as Primeval's arguably most popular 'ship is concerned.)
Back to the episode, Connor is at his adorably geeky best. Nick and Stephen are finally less awed and more serious as Helen and her disappearance comes back to mind.
Scene change, and we're in a government building. Nick and Abby are signing lots and lots of paperwork, including non-disclosure forms. Claudia is watching, and is joined by the one and only James Lester. He's at his snarky best and we all love him for it.
Stephen and Connor, meanwhile, are still in the Forest of Dean on the search of the dinosaur Ben described. Crazy boys.
Back in the comfortable government building, Lester meets Nick and Abby. Claudia is clearly the middleman, trying to appease them both. The foursome watch through a window as a team of scientists try to carry out tests on Rex, and Abby wonders aloud if they know he can fly.
The answer is no, as our little lizard friend makes a break for it and soars through the building with the team in pursuit. He finds an open window and is about to fly out it when Abby tries to appeal to him. At first, we think she's failed but he soon comes back to her. Lester turns around and we see he's been given a little token of Rex's affection: lizard poop on the shoulder of his no doubt expensive suit. Oops.
Connor and Stephen find footprints; Connor uses his 'comprehensive database' to identify it as a Gorgonopsid and looks very worried. Stephen is on the case and uses his tracking skills to follow the Gorgonopsid to a school, where Ben is sitting in detention. The Gorgonopsid runs through the hallways towards Ben, who tries to warn his teacher but she doesn't believe him until she's faced with a dinosaur trying to break into her classroom. Really, she should be pleased someone wants to sit in detention because no kid ever wants to.
Stephen turns up to distract the Gorgonopsid before it can succeed in getting to Ben and his teacher. Lockers, cupboards and a fire extinguisher are used in his attempt at distracting/getting away from the Gorgonopsid. Stephen is knocked unconscious and the Gorgonopsid escapes.
Back at the anomaly, Nick volunteers to take Rex through and Captain Ryan goes with him on Claudia's orders. Connor remains behind, monitoring the strength of the magnetic pull of the anomaly and therefore how much time they have to make it back. It's not a lot, as Connor identifies that it's getting weaker almost as soon as they've walked through.
Nick is amazed at being in the late Permian era and lets Rex go. Mission accomplished, but he's not ready to go home. He and Captain Ryan explore and find evidence they're not the first humans to be there – there's evidence of a camp, including human remains and a camera that belonged to Helen. The human remains, however, are male. They argue; Nick doesn't want to leave without searching for his wife. Captain Ryan knocks him out and carries him back to the anomaly. They argue a bit more before realising the anomaly is disappearing and make a run for it, managing to make it back home...
... with a stowaway in the form of Rex, who only Abby notices as everyone else is focused on Nick and Ryan.
The Gorgonopsid chooses that moment to attack, most likely wanting to go back home through the anomaly but it's too late. It's killed by Stephen ramming it with his truck and then shooting it, saving Nick and Claudia in the process.
Back in the Home Office building, Nick stares at a picture found on the camera: it's Helen, taken in the Permian era. Who took the picture? We won't know for another five episodes.
It's clear that the anomaly closing and the Gorgonopsid being killed might be the end of this chapter but isn't the end of the story.
In his office, Nick looks at the photograph of Helen on his desk. He hears a noise and goes to investigate; when he returns, there's a living Ammonite on his desk. He runs to see if he can catch who has left it behind but doesn't find anyone...
Cue closing credits.
