" A farewell for a beginning"

Chapter 2

Falco has been in the air for three hours, and even if he wanted to keep going, his stamina is almost exhausted. The Beast/Jaw Titan returns drained with Captain Levi to the colossal form of the commander.“We should briefly discuss the situation with the Commander ,Grice. Is there any way you can land near him?” Falco's Titan lands on Commander Arlert's shoulder.

Falco is grateful to be able to take a short breath and the captain has apparently noticed his dwindling strength. Erens Jaeger's Titan has been standing still for a short while, Commander Arlert's Colossal Titan keeping him under strict control.

A treacherous silence and calm returns.

The young woman named Mikasa has been in Eren's Titan for what feels like an eternity, but it is probably only a few minutes.

Falco notices the captain's growing concern and nervousness and although Falco has only known him for a short time, the captain's strong concern for the young Eldier woman is as apparent as his own for Gabi. "Shit. It's been taking too long. What is that brat doing over there? Falco, get out of your Titan and take a break, but be ready to take off if you need to.” He instructs. “Commander, should I follow after Mikasa?"

The Colossal Titan gives his consent with a silent nod. He looks worriedly in the direction of the missing woman, Falco notes.

Falco is grateful for the short break and climbs out of his Titan, all the while making sure that he does not come into contact with the Colossal's hot flesh. “If I am not back with that gloomy brat in ten minutes, help the others with the fucking worm. We will have to take care of Eren alone if necessary.”

There is a noticeable desperation in the Captain’s voice as he says thesewords. Then, he looks at the Commander and Falco once more. “And stay alive. That’s an order!” And with that, he sets off with his 3DM gear in the direction of Eren Jaeger's Titan. "You too, Captain!" Falco calls after him, and he is amazed at the toughness of the captain for being capable enough to make such manoeuvres with his serious leg injury and worrying condition. He assumes that worry drives him to draw on his last reserves of strength.

Falco recalls that Colt, his older brother, and Commander Zeke Jaeger, as well as he and the other younger cadets, shortly before the attack in Liberio, once warned about which the Ackermanns should never engage in a fight. That was about 3 months ago now. Colt, Zofia and Udo were still alive there, Falco notes painfully, but neither of the Ackermanns are responsible for their deaths. He and Eren Jaeger have to bear this responsibility alone. If only he hadn't sent this unfortunate letter, maybe they'd all still be alive and Gabi wouldn't be in this terrible position. His thoughts float over to Gabi. He remembers her last look, both pleasing and fearful. Even while knowing he has a job to finish, he can’t shake his desperation and worry over her condition.

Will Gabi soon be one of those people who will only live on in his memories? He immediately suppresses this thought and looks in the direction where Reiner and the other titan warriors are trying to stop all the pure titans and buy them time here so that Erens Jaeger's crazy rumbeling can be stopped.

“Commander Arlert. What will become of Gabi and the other Eldiern now?” He asks with great fear and looks into the eyes of the Colossal and sees only a mixture of helplessness and despair that robs him of all hope. Then, the colors of the Commander's eyes change from sky blue to stone grey. Falco realises what is happening almost too late and just manages to get out of his titan. In seconds, his titan and that of the commander turn into pure rock.

Terrified, Falco moves away from his titan and tries on the one hand not to stay in contact with his Titan and on the other hand not to plunge into the depths. He accidentally comes into contact with the colossal, no reaction from burned flesh, but what he feels is only painfully cool stone. “Commander, are you all right?” Knowing full well that this question is completely superfluous. Because his titan and that of the commander turned to stone at almost at the same time, he has little hope for Reiner and the other warriors.

Nevertheless, he climbs in their direction onto the Colossal's shoulder, who, luckily, has such coarse muscle tissue that he can find a hold and ascend with ease. When he arrives, he tries to get an overview and sees a frighteningly calm scene.

Nothing of the fighting can be seen any more. The wind still stirs up the dust from the fight. It doesn’t take Falco long to become painfully aware that he was just very lucky, and that the others are locked forever in a case of stone, probably formed from the inside out.

Bile comes up and he vomits. He almost can’t take it anymore, the losses far greater than any child his age should have to witness. It’s enough to make it hard to believe that he’s only a kid. More than anything, he just wants to go back to his family and forget everything.

But now that he is alone, he’s is very afraid. Not that he has been able to do this since his basic training as a cadet, his emotional state worries him more to have to survive in this destroyed world.

What is he supposed to do? He looks in the direction where both Ackermanns have disappeared, then looks in the direction

where Gabi could be and has to decide. He doesn't want to risk a new titan transformation for fear of turning to stone, but following one of the Ackermanns directly still fills him with fear.

From what he knows about his brother and the fight in Liberio, both of the Ackermanns had a reputation for being ‘monsters’.

In stark contrast, however, is his experience with both of them, such as how Captain Levi behaved towards him and Gabi; the latter in particular, who used to be the more suspicious of the two, but quickly gained confidence in the male Ackermann. The female Ackermann was muchmore reserved and colder, which was probably due to the connection to Eren Jaeger, but was nonetheless friendly to both children. Gabi had told him that the female Ackermann saved her life, when the girl Kaya tried to stab her after it came out that Gabi had shot her sister in Liberio, of all people.

He closes his eyes, thinking of his girlfriend, with whom he wanted to build a future after the war. “I'm sorry, Gabi. Hold on a little longer. I'll get help.” He sees that Commander Arlert and Eren Jaeger’s titans have moulded together by the arms: a crazy possibility for him to get to the two Ackermanns. He looks down and estimates that it must be around fifty to sixty meters long. He observes the wind to assess whether it is safe to walk over this overgrown bridge, hoping that it won’t collapse in the meantime.

But what choice do I have? He thinks painfully, and makes his way to Eren Jaeger's Titan.

Levi arrives in Eren's maw with great concern. He is depressed by what has become of the boy who was once believed to be hope for humanity and what in the end has come true for his prediction. He hates this quality of himself because of the fact that he’s been all too often right in his judgments and has never been able to save anyone in the end.

He was not able to save his first squad, nor Erwin, his old friend, just as little to prevent Hanji from sacrificing theirself today.

Fate has always played a shitty game with him and has proven it again today. First, Hanji sacrifices their life so that everyone can flee from Eren's Colossal Titans by flying boat, only for them to learn that Falco possessed the ability to save them all the while.

Tch. It's all a shitty joke, he thinks.

But, insignificant as it now seems in light of the current situation, there was a time when he had really been able to save someone's life. His thoughts drift over to the gloomy brat of his squad, remnants of their fateful encounter in the giant tree forest flooding through his memories.

Back then, she had defiantly set out to pursue Annie's female titans in a blind rage to free Eren. She would have almost surely lost her life back then if he hadn't come to her aid. He looks down at his injured leg because it was the same leg that was injured back then.

Some things never change.

He tries to convince himself that the reason he thinks of her so often is because she has shown a tendency to be suicidal at a young age. In addition, she often questioned his arrangements and assessments, a quality for which, while initially irritating to him, he later secretly admired her.

The ability to think independently (unless Eren was involved) and to confront superiors with their decisions did not exist too often among the soldiers of the survey corps… Shit! Among any unit.

But why the hell does he have to think about it right now?

Kenny's last words come back to him that everyone is drunk on something or someone. Does that mean he's drunk on Mikasa?

He would probably scoff, were it not for the blind panic that now fills him as a worrying scene appears before his eyes:

Mikasa is lying on the floor covered in blood, next to her is the telltale red scarf that seems to be hiding something or part of someone. It doesn’t take much for him to imagine what is in it and the very thought makes him nauseous.

In the past four years, he has learned to hate this piece of red cloth. At first, he couldn’t help but laugh inwardly at the ragged piece of fabric, but after she was accepted into his second squad, he learned that this scarf was a sign of Eren's solidarity. Armin once made a joke that it was Eren's engagement ring. Hanji was once so crazy to suggest that he give Mikasa a scarf himself, and if they hadn't become such an important friend to him, he would have broken their arm out of blind anger or at least dislocated it.

With pain and great effort, he manages to drag himself toward her on his remaining three extremities. He taps her shoulder roughly to get a hoped for reaction from her that is not returned. Her skin already looks paler than usual. A fear now fills him; the very same kind that he had felt the last time he saw Isabel and Farlan.

PLEASE! Not again! I beg you! Is all he can think as he struggles to raise himself with his upper body and instinctively takes her in his arms, but there is no reaction on her part. Normally, she would have pushed him away immediately, but this realisation alone makes him even more desperate. Feelings and tears that he has suppressed for so many years and not allowed to show come out in a torrent and fall onto her forehead. First one, then two, and then, there are more and more, pouring faster and heavier, until her skin is glistening with his grief.

He gently caresses a blood-smeared strand of hair from her face, hoping to be able to alleviate something within her; that a single touch would be enough to bring her back to him. The reality is unfortunately different, he realises. In his desperation, he holds her, forehead to forehead, so that he might feel a breath from her, but there is nothing. Nothing at all.

“Stay with me! PLEASE! I need you to stay with me! MIKASA!” he cries desperately, holding her tighter, closer to himself in spite of the fact that he must stink like a rotten corpse. In desperation, he recalls one of Hanji's emergency manoeuvres to save the lives of the unconscious: all he has to do is touch her mouth with his and press air into her.

He hesitates. At any other opportunity, he would blush madly and at the same time be deeply disturbed, reminded by the grim fate of his mother, who had spent her life being forced to please strangers. The thought of forcing himself onto Mikasa disgusts him similarly, but time leaves him little choice to think more about it.He leans in.

A short time later, Falco arrives at Eren's mouth. With great difficulty, he move across the overgrown bridge, the wind now his strongest adversary, threatening to blow him down with so much as the slightest. I'll have it in a moment, he thinks, and glides over it, little by little.

Finally, after what feels like an eternity, he gets into the mouth of the other titan with the hope of meeting both Ackermanns just as a disturbing thought occurs to him: what if both have been turned to stone?

Immediately, he banishes this thought, because the fear alone is enough to almost paralyse him.

What he stumbles upon, however, are not two stony figures after all, but an intimate scene between the captain, still very much alive, and the Ackermann woman, the former hunched over the latter who is held carefully in his arms, his face pressed fiercely against hers, as though they were…

No… wait…

Are…

Are… they kissing?!

notes: this is a gn!reader. there are mentions of makeup being used, but i feel like any gender can use makeup. it's not even anything serious like a beat face. just some lip gloss n mascara. chapstick too but thats not makeup. it's just one line, so you can skip over it if you would like to!

✩ eren bites you. its not even in a sexual way, he just likes to bite. they’re like a second form of kissing to him. you could be chilling together on the couch watching a movie, and he’ll just chomp on your shoulder. even when you were trying to focus on something, he swings by, bites then leaves. eren has no shame, so he does it in front of your friends too. you could be having a normal conversation with mikasa and he’ll just bite you, then the two of you carry on as if it was normal. it’s not normal. but you love it. sometimes you bite him back too. but only in private.

✩ armin gives you random things he finds. armin likes to go out and explore, with or without you. when he comes back after an adventure you opted out of, he always has something for you he found. a rock, a seashell or a cool flower are just some of the things he gets for you. if he can’t find something, he finds a gift shop to get you something instead, saying, “well, (y/n), i did find it in the gift shop.” he always looks so proud giving it to you, rambling about the story of how he found your gift. you have a small box tucked away with all the treasures he gives you.

✩ jean steals your things. whenever he comes over, he likes to mooch off your possessions. if he’s spending the night at your place and needs a shower, he’s using your shampoo, conditioner and body wash. if his lips are chapped, he swipes your lip balm to use on himself. one time you even walked in on him trying your mascara and lip gloss. another time he had your clothes on his giant frame. but he always replaces whatever he uses, venmoing you within the next few days with some cash and a sorry note. “sorry for using ur lip balm baby, buy some more <3” with $20 attached to it. you tell him that lip balm doesn’t even cost that much, but he tells you to treat yourself to lunch with the extra money.

✩ connie makes plans without letting you know beforehand. at 3am, you are woken up by an influx of messages and calls from your boyfriend. in your sleepy state you go to answer him, only to be told to get dressed and come out. he’s right outside of your house and hungry. you remind him it’s very early in the morning and you both have class. “but i’m hungry and craving burgers,” he repeats. you have no choice to get in the car with him. this can happen throughout the day, not just early in the morning. one time he whisked you away in the middle of your online class because he didn’t tell you he bought tickets to a movie showing in 30 minutes. the memories you share on these spontaneous dates are always your favorite ones with him.

✩ erwin buys you whatever you like in bulk. it’s not even an exaggeration when you say bulk. you mention one thing to him, and the next day there are boxes upon boxes sitting on your kitchen counter. “these oranges taste pretty good,” you mumble to yourself as you peel your 2nd one. erwins sharp ears hear this, and first thing in the morning he’s off to buy multiple bags of your supposed favorite oranges. it takes you days, sometimes weeks, to finish whatever he decided to buy you. you always tell him he doesn’t need to buy so much, but he never listens. though, you always appreciate how attentive he is to your likes and dislikes.

✩ levi cleans up for you and ruins your organization. it’s always a blessing when someone else decides to take on the burden of cleaning for you, and you thought you hit the jackpot with a boyfriend who loved to clean, clean, clean. but it could get annoying when you suddenly couldn’t find anything you placed anywhere. if you’re anything like me, you’re messy but organized. you know where things are. when levi comes to clean, he places things where he thinks they should go. you’re sent on a wild goose chase looking for your pencil case, only for it to be in a completely different drawer than the one you usually kept it in. despite this behavior, it’s always nice to come home from a long day from school to see your desk organized. what was once a mess of papers and other supplies have been filed into their correct places, the table wiped down from any lingering coffee stains and your supplies being organized in a way so you knew where everything was. sometimes there’d be a plate of fruit with the note, “good luck on your exams,” written in your boyfriends neat writing beside it.

✩ reiner coddles you too much. whenever you express any sort of discomfort, reiner is always rushing to your side. “are you hurt? do you need medical attention? how many fingers am i holding up?” he asks, checking you for any cuts or bruises. thank you, honey, but i’m fine. just bumped into the counter. despite that, he’s dragging you over to the bathroom to fix up your imaginary injuries. you always find it a bit much when you’re fine. it’s during the times where you’re actually hurt where you learn to appreciate it. he’s so gentle cleaning your cuts, kissing them softly once they’re dressed. you wonder if he’d be like that with your future children.

✩ bertholdt is too nervous around you. it’s been years since the two of you got together, and he still refuses to make eye contact with you. his hands get sweaty and shake when you attempt to hold his hand. he always stumbles over his words when speaking to you as he tries to find the right words to say. he even blushes when he introduces you to other people as his significant other! you remind bertholdt over and over again that he doesn’t need to be so shy around you. but you cant help but coo over him showing up for your date, flustered mess and thrusting flowers into your hand. “they reminded me of you,” he said quietly, refusing to meet your eyes. you giggle and press a kiss to his hot cheeks.

✩ porco is too cocky for his own good. he’s always parading around the house, boasting about his latest achievements. he beat colt in a video game colt was a supposed god in. he can throw a baseball farther than zeke. he can run faster than pieck. if he’s taller than you, he's always making fun of you for being shorter than him. if you’re taller, you’re not exempt from his wrath either. he’s boasting about how he’s perfect height to not hit his head on doorways. he never goes as far as to hurt your feelings, always knowing when to stop. though he has a big ego, he would let it crash and burn just to see you smile after beating him at smash bros. you laugh and taunt him, happy you beat him in one thing. he doesn’t mind, instead watching you with a soft smile on his lips and love in his eyes.

✩ zeke forces you to work out with him. and it’s not like in the afternoon to help you stretch out. it’s not light yoga or a couple minutes on the treadmill. no, this man wakes you up at ass crack in the morning to take you on a 5 mile hiking trip. you barely have any time to register what is happening around you before you’re already standing at the start of the trail with your gear. “come on! we can’t slack off!” he says, clapping his hands together. the sun is beating down on you and your feet hurt, but this man doesn’t let you stop for a break. “we’re almost there,” he says. your complaining goes out the window when he shows you the view at the top. its one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen. hiking up long ass trails to see beautiful views with your boyfriend was so worth it in the end.

✩ colt accidentally turns your dates into babysitting sessions. you show up at his house with the promise of a good time, only to be met with a guilty looking colt and his little brother falco behind him. “sorry,” he says sheepishly, “gabi got sick with the cold, so i couldn’t drop him off there. i hope you don’t mind him staying.” you hide your disappointment behind a wide smile, nodding enthusiastically as to not hurt either of their feelings. you just wanted to spend some alone time with your boyfriend, and it would have to wait. hanging out with falco wasn’t actually that bad. the three of you had an amazing time together, watching tv, playing games and even baking together. if you hate kids, you can’t bring yourself to hate falco; he’s just the sweetest boy you’ve ever met. you and falco are already asking colt when the three of you can hang out again when you have to go back home.

✩ hanji is always talking. you don’t discourage them from talking about their interests. they’re very passionate about the things they love, and can’t help talking about them. its like the scene where hanji kept eren up all night talking about titans. when you’re trying to focus on something or go to sleep, hanji is just yapping away. you’re honestly amazed at their ability to never run out of things to say about the most mundane things. hell, one time they talked for an hour and a half about a building color they saw when they were out one day. but hanji just looked so happy when talking. their face would break out into a huge grin, and their arms would fly around as they told their story. it was too cute for you to tell them to stop.

✩ mikasa hovers too much. every corner you turn, every place you go to, mikasa is following. she claims she’s not clingy, but in reality she is. it’s like a cat who hates affection, but needs to be in the same room as you at all times. you don’t mind her following you into the bedroom or living room or kitchen. you had to draw a line when she tried to follow you into the bathroom. even when you’re out, she’s always following you around. you tell her it’s okay to break off from you and spend some time by herself, but she always shakes her head and follows you to your next destination. you’re always grateful for her hovering when a group of drunk people try hitting on you, whistling and telling you they’ll give you a good time. but one look at your girlfriend who showed up from out of nowhere, and they’re running away with their tails between their legs.

✩ sasha eats your food. she can’t help it. she likes to snack. she’s always hungry. and you get that. to stop things like this from happening, you have separate places to keep your food. just so sasha and you have your favorite snacks and takeout separated. you respect the rule, but your girlfriend seems to lose her reading skills when hungry, one too many times you have walked in on her with her hand deep into a bag of your chips, something you’ve been waiting to eat all week when you were supposed to watch that new horror movie on netflix with her. you huff and puff and retreat to your bedroom. sasha comes back after a few hours, looking upset with tons and tons of snacks in her arms. “i’m sorry i ate your chips,” she frowns. she sets down all the food she got on your bed. “i got all these snacks you liked as an apology. and 3 bags of your favorite chips.” you could never stay mad at her cute face.

✩ annie complains about spending time with you. “i like my alone time,” she says, brushing you off when you asked why she didn’t want to watch a movie with you. some people were introverted, preferring to spend time by themselves rather than with someone else. you were like that too; you had your moments where you didn’t feel like being around your girlfriend. but it became an annoying problem when she constantly shot down your attempts to hang out with you. when she finally agrees, she’s always finding something to complain about. but during important dates or when you’re not in the best mood, she’s always the first to remind you or initiate a hang out/date. she shuts her mouth and enjoys her time with you, not one criticism or groan leaving her lips. she would never admit it, but being around you made her so happy.

✩ pieck is always sleeping. you have to wait a few hours to get a text or call back from pieck because she’s always dozing off somewhere. “sorry sweets,” she yawns into the mic, “was taking a nap. need something?” good luck trying to reach your girlfriend during an emergency. when you come home with takeout for dinner because neither of you wanted to cook, she’s sleeping at the dinner table. when you’re watching a movie she wanted to watch, she’s snoring away, curled up at the end of the couch. during lectures you share together, she has her head in her arms and has the audacity to ask you for your notes in the end. and it’s not like she’s not getting enough sleep, no. she gets her recommended 8 hours of sleep and then some. it’s nice to have a sleepy girlfriend, though, when you’re dead tired from living. you drag your feet into the bedroom to see her about to take her nth nap for the day. she notices your zombie-like state and opens up her arms for you. the two of you cuddle and nap together, sleeping the stress away.

In contrast to episode 62, this episode got a lot more of a positive response, with no one rating it a one, and well over ¾ rating it as a 4 or better. The anticipation for the upcoming events surely has a part to play in this!

As expected of the fandom, Falco leading Reiner to the basement to meet Eren got the largest chunk of the pie as what was probably one of the most anticipated moments from the episode. In second was the daytime festival with Reiner spoiling the kids to some good food, with the third place going to Eren meeting his grandfather at the hospital.

They animated Dr Jaeger’s breakdown incredibly well, I felt extra bad for the guy.

WHICH KID HAD THE CUTEST “BEGGING” EXPRESSION? 244 Responses

Gabi says she’s cute, and the fandom agrees! With 67.2% of the vote, Gabi takes the number 1 spot as the most adorable beggar. This is followed up distantly by Falco, who took in 25.8% of the vote. Zofia and Udo got a small amount of love as well.

WHAT DO YOU THINK - DID MAPPA DO WILLY TYBUR JUSTICE? 245 Responses

Overall, respondents are very happy with MAPPA’s rendition of Willy Tybur, with nearly 50% simply appreciating his design and seiyuu, while 38.8% find him quite dashing. A small amount think MAPPA got his design down just right, but not so much of a hit with the seiyuu.

MAPPA MANAGED TO FIT IN THE STAIRWELL SCENE WITH PORCO AND PIECK. WAS IT EVERYTHING YOU HOPED IT WOULD BE? 247 Responses

MAPPA gave some of us a good surprise by repurposing the stairwell scene with Porco and Pieck (and I think most of us agree they’d have been fools to omit it completely). 38.1% were very grateful for it’s inclusion. 37.2% think they executed it well and had a nice chuckle from it. 9.7% were disappointed in the adaptation of Pieck’s ass, and 10.9% actually didn’t care about this scene anyway.

I always knew MAPPA wouldn't dare cut the scene where Pieck scares the crap outta Porco 😂. Poor guy could have fallen down the stairs.

That was a cute and fun scene. Pieck is really sweet and Porco was more friendly and open hearted than his manga counterpart. I really loved it!

Anime-only scenes are always hit-or-miss with manga readers, and this one seems to have been no exception. Overall, 32% of respondents thought it added a nice layer to the life of Eldians on the mainland. 18.4% were appreciative of a little more Zofia content. 16.4% liked the scene well enough, but didn’t feel it was necessary. 12.7% feel that it will serve as more fodder for Gabi’s characterization. Smaller amounts either didn’t care about it, or felt that it was completely unneeded and pointless.

I don't remember it not being part of manga, but this scene was good.

They skipped so many scenes from the manga and then add this... really not necessary

I've appreciated every little addition they've added so far, but I wish we could all quit associating black cats with bad luck. It's a major reason why they have a hard time getting adopted in real life. :(

Udo shows a lot of distaste for the way that Eldians are treated both in the manga and in the anime, although it seems to have gone a bit more overlooked when we initially met his character. The anime team upped the sarcasm in Udo’s fatalistic views and the fandom seems to be very receptive to it! 44.9% of respondents feel that it makes him stand out a lot more than it did in the manga, and 34.2% are simply enjoying this more lively rendition of his character. A handful of others prefer his demeanor better in the manga, while others really don’t care about Udo at all.

I adore him in the anime. It’s gonna hurt seeing him squashed.

Overall, there doesn’t seem to be much panic in the omission of Zeke and Colt playing baseball, although some write-in responses indicated that they were more saddened by the lack of development between Zeke and Colt, rather than the foreshadowing of the Yeager brothers working together. 39.5% feel that since we already know Zeke has an affinity for baseball, the foreshadowing works well enough without this extra scene. 28.8% feel that we should simply wait and see if MAPPA rearranged this like it has other scenes. 13.6% think that this will make things even more of a shock for anime-only viewers, while a smaller handful feel that it ruins all ability to even speculate about it.

It would be too obvious if it was in the same episode and I think Eren's scene is enough for people to make a conection between baseball and Zeke

I missed it because it fleshed out Zeke and Colt’s relationship. Specifically the thing Zeke says about being a big brother.

I'm more sad because it was cute than for the potential foreshadowing. The foreshadowing is at least partly still there without it.

The symbol on Kiyomi’s kimono is the same one that is branded on Mikasa’s wrist in the manga. But the anime team retconned this detail and Mikasa’s mother showed her the symbol through embroidery instead. So it begs the question of how this will be acknowledged in the anime, given Mikasa doesn’t (knowingly) walk around with an embroidered Azumabito symbol on her clothing. 41.7% feel that she will verbally acknowledge the symbol as something her mother showed her when she was little. 25% are anticipating MAPPA retconning things back to having the symbol branded on Mikasa’s wrist again instead. 15.8% think she will have the symbol embroidered on a piece of clothing she is wearing, and others feel it will be acknowledged in a different way, or the scene will be omitted altogether.

Either canned entirely so they can focus more on adapting the more labor intensive parts or acknowledged in another way

Anyone who thinks they’ll retcon to a tattoo is super wrong. Japan has a huge taboo on tattoos because of the Yakuza (Japanese Mafia) so they’re 100% keeping with the embroidery

For those of us who are OST nerds, we wait in anticipation of which track will be used for the iconic Declaration of War scene and how it will impact the overall execution. 37.3% who listened to the fan composition of a new song feel that no other song would suit the scene and are hopeful this is, indeed, what will play. 22.4% are hanging on for YouSeeBigGirl/T:T (or at the very least a rendition of it) due to the significance it has between Eren and Reiner. 19.3% feel it will play during Willy’s play, but not the Big Moment itself, and 11.4% simply aren’t invested. Some write-ins indicated they don’t want to be spoiled on any of the new music until it’s paired with the appropriate scenes.

I hope that it will be Vogel im Kafig but this track fits great too, and I think that this track is more likely to play during the buildup scene

Of course, these are all more or less interconnected, so the vast majority of respondents are looking forward to the buildup toward and the climax of the DoW (as expected). A small number are looking forward to smaller scenes such as Falco realizing he’s been used and Willy’s play in general.

Overall just really exited for the next episode and for chapter 136 to come out

The ending got me so HYPED for the next episode!! It was really well done.

the eyeshots of Eren's grandpa were epic

The episode was trully wonderful and I enjoyed every part of it. MAPPA is doing great job and I get a feeling that with the new soundtrack the episodes feel more serious than the ones created by WiT. I love Pieck. I never understood what was so ""cute"" about her in the manga. I saw her only as intelligent, skilled, tough warrior woman. Now I finally see her cuteness. I love how sweet and calm she is. Pieck reminds me of Tsuyu from MHA. They share similar energy. I'm grateful to MAPPA for making the bonds between the warriors stronger. This way the anime onlines will feel more sympathy to them. Pieck and Porco won't be just cold warriors, but nice folks.

Watching Falco and Gabi together is so satisfying to watch after knowing he confesses his love before inheriting the jaw Titan oooof love them so much

chapter sixteen: faster than you could say sabotage

On Sunday, the doorbell echoed through the house.

The equipment arrived.

Levi opened the door to see Mr. Grice and a very terrified Colt.

“Captain Ackerman! So great to see you!” Mr. Grice said as he brought in one of the many boxes from the truck.

“Hello, Mr. Grice,” Levi said as he continued to hold the door open.

“Where would you like these?” Mr. Grice asked.

“Just behind the couch for now. We’re still working on the basement.”

“Wonderful!”

Colt looked terrified the entire time. He never spoke.

They left after Mr. Grice thanked Levi again.

The Ackerman household fell into their own normalcy the Monday everyone headed back to work.

Sasha and Historia went to the indoor farmer’s market every weekday morning to work for Sasha’s father.

Annie shut herself away into her room to work until 5:00 pm but she did come out for an hour at lunch.

Mikasa had taken up most of the household chores since she didn’t have a job.

Ymir had worked at the bar for two days before getting fired.

“Do I even want to know why you got fired?” Levi asked as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“This guy was not taking no for an answer for this girl. So I poured both of their drinks on him,” Ymir shrugged as she collapsed on the couch.

“I’m impressed!” Mikasa called from the kitchen.

“Fine, whatever. You better pull your weight,” Levi said before returning to reading his newspaper.

So Mikasa and Ymir became the main two to work in the basement.

They started that on Wednesday.

The basement was huge.

It had to be as large as the entire house, if not bigger.

“Boxes of important shit can go to the attic,” Levi had instructed them on their first day truly cleaning it.

“There’s an attic?” Ymir asked.

“Pull string is hanging in the hallway but just barely. You’ll need a ladder to pull it down,” He told them. “I’m taking the dogs on a walk. Don’t die before I get back.”

“He has such little faith in us,” Ymir commented.

Mikasa and Ymir went through boxes to sort out what was important and what wasn’t.

“Nope!” Ymir shouted before closing a box. “Fuck this. Nope. Someone else can look in this box.”

“Porn?” Mikasa asked as she sat down to go through her own box.

“I wish but no. Come see for yourself,” Ymir moved away from the box.

Mikasa sighed as she stood back up. She walked over to the box. She slowly opened the box up.

Inside the box were a bunch of jars.

“Why are you freaking out about glass jars?” Mikasa asked as she rolled her eyes.

“Pick one up,” Ymir told Mikasa as she crossed her arms across her chest.

Mikasa did and there was some sort of strange large bug in it. Mikasa immediately sat it down back in the box and closed the lid of the box.

“Yeah, I told you.”

“I don’t know what that is. Let’s leave it in the box and let Levi deal with it.”

It wasn’t long before Levi had returned with the dogs.

The puppies ran down the stairs. They happily barked at the girls as they ran around the basement and demanded pets from both Ymir and Mikasa.

Levi came down shortly after.

“Open that box,” Ymir said pointing to the box.

“Why?” Levi asked.

“Just do it.”

Levi sighed before he walked over and opened the box. He pulled out the same jar that Mikasa had.

“I thought I got rid of all these,” he sighed.

“What is that in there?” Mikasa asked.

“Some tailless whip scorpion or something. Kenny liked to collect these things and keep them in his office,” Levi scoffed.

“Why?” Ymir asked.

“I don’t know. Kenny was weird sometimes,” Levi shrugged as he put the jar back into the box.

“Did Kenny use to torture people down here?” Ymir asked.

Levi froze.

“Why would you ask something like that?” he asked.

“Well, there’s the jars of creepy bugs and the chains still hanging on the wall. So unless you and Hange are having a sexy fun time down here, then that’s what I’m going with.”

“I’m going to go see if Hange wants these for class,” Levi said as he walked away, disappearing back up stairs.

“Your uncle totally tortured people down here,” Ymir said as she looked over at Mikasa.

“I think so too. Before he got sick. It makes sense. Shows why everyone is afraid of Kenny,” Mikasa said with a shrug.

“That and the shady shit Historia told us her dad was involved in. So are all Ackermans born this badass or what?”

“I don’t know. I was nine when my dad died. My dad just went hunting every once and a while. I never met Levi’s mom. I don’t know what she is like,” Mikasa replied.

“Hunting is pretty badass. I’m sure Levi’s mom was, it’s just in the genetics.”

Ymir started through another box.

“This box looks like all stuff from you’ve done in school, Mikasa.” Ymir said as she stood up and picked up the box.

“Levi saved it?” Mikasa was shocked. Levi didn’t seem like the type of person to save this stuff.

“Yeah, looks like everything since you moved here. Art projects, reports, anything he hung on the fridge is in the box. Probably should go to the attic.”

“I don’t know if Levi thinks this is important,” Mikasa went back to sorting through her own box of papers.

“If he’s saved your handprint turkey from when you were ten, I think it’s important to him.”

Historia’s twenty third birthday was drawing close.

She seemed to be getting more depressed as time went on. If anyone asked her about it, she waved them off pretending to be okay. She began to go to bed earlier and earlier in the day.

“I think we should have a small party for her. Just us though,” Ymir suggested.

“Oh! I could make a cake!” Sasha exclaimed.

“I can decorate while she’s at work,” Mikasa added.

“I can help with dinner,” Annie decided.

“What are you going to do, Levi?” Ymir asked.

“Pretend not to be here,” He said before he got up and left the kitchen.

It was the morning of Historia’s twenty third birthday.

Historia had not been looking forward to her birthday.

When she lived at the Reiss House, it had always been huge parties filled with people Historia didn’t know. She didn’t even get time to spend with her friends as she was always being whisked away by Rod to speak to someone else he found important.

Though she had left the Reiss house, Historia’s sense of dread and annoyance was still there.

It was no surprise to her when she woke up and her phone had been disconnected.

“Give me that,” Levi said at breakfast before snatching the phone out of Historia’s hand. “Might as well put you on the plan too with Ymir and Mikasa. Too dangerous not to have a phone.”

“You’re so our dad,” Ymir laughed.

“Shut up, you get to do dishes.” He walked into the other room with Historia's phone.

The doorbell rang and it was followed by a loud pounding at the front door.

Sawney and Bean immediately began barking.

Mikasa and Ymir left the kitchen to go into the living room.

“Get back in there. Take the dogs,” Levi hissed.

Mikasa and Ymir scooped the dogs up and went into the kitchen.

“Who was it?” Sasha asked.

“I don’t know,” Mikasa said.

Silence fell over the kitchen.

“I have a letter here that I must deliver directly to Miss Historia Reiss,” a deep voice from the other room said. “We have good reason to believe she’s staying at this residence.”

“She is. Why is that illegal? Oh wait, you’re not a cop. I don’t have to answer to you,” Levi’s voice was filled with venom.

“No, but I do work for the Reiss family,” the deep voice replied.

“And I’m Kenny Ackerman’s nephew.”

“Oh. I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t realize you were Captain Ackerman.”

“I don’t give a fuck. Give me the letter and get off my doorstep.”

The door slammed so hard it shook the house.

“What the fuck is this shit?” Levi asked as he entered the kitchen. “Shows up early in the morning with a letter that isn’t even closed. This isn’t a letter. It’s a piece of paper.”

Historia took the letter from Levi.

Miss Historia Reiss and No Name,

We regret to inform you that all music performed at The Battle of the Bands is property of Fritz Pharmaceuticals.

You must return by 5:00 pm tonight.

Historia began crying after she read the letter and passed to Ymir. After Ymir read it, she passed it to Annie. The letter went around the table until it ended back with Levi.

“Unfortunately, you signed the contract, they can do that,” Levi said as he sat down at the table.

“Well, I better get packing,” Historia stood up.

“What?” Annie asked.

“Why?” Sasha added.

“Those songs aren’t ours anymore,” Historia pushed her chair back in.

“Okay, so? You’re not going to sell your soul to Rod Reiss for a few songs,” Ymir said.

“Mikasa worked hard on those songs. You three worked hard on those songs. I’m not going to throw that away.” Historia made her way out of the kitchen.

Ymir stood up and followed her. “And you did too!”

“Exactly!”

“Historia, you’re not going back there,” Ymir cut her off and blocked her way to the stairs.

“I don’t have a choice!”

“So you’re just going to throw us away? You’re just going to throw away the recording equipment that Levi spent thousands of dollars away? All the songs you and Mikasa wrote? And what about our relationship?”

“This isn’t about us! And you’ll all end up hating me if I don’t!”

“We won’t,” Mikasa said as she walked up behind Historia.

“Does it suck? Yeah, but it’s not worth it,” Annie added.

“We’ve got better stuff now!” Sasha exclaimed.

“But those songs…” Historia cried.

“It’s what? Maybe ten songs?” Ymir asked.

“I don’t even think it’s that many. Plus, we haven’t played them since then. I kind of forgot about them,” Mikasa laughed.

“See? Ask them if you don’t believe me. Let’s take a vote,” Ymir said.

“Mikasa, your lyrics are….”

Mikasa cut Historia off, “not worth you going back to that manipulative, soul crushing man. I vote no.”

“Annie?” Historia asked.

“Fuck Rod Reiss,” Annie answered.

“Sasha?”

“No. I vote no going back.” Sasha smiled.

“Ymir?”

“Do you even have to ask?” Ymir crossed her arms across her chest.

“You said to take a vote.”

“No. I vote no. I started the Fuck Rod Reiss club, thank you very much.”

The group moved together, hugging Historia as she cried. She didn’t know what she did to deserve these friends.

“You’ve got to go to work,” Ymir said as they broke out of their group hug.

“Yeah, we should get going,” Historia wiped the tears from her eyes.

Historia had not been surprised when she had dropped a crate of eggs at work seeing how her day had started.

Turning twenty three felt cursed.

When she and Sasha returned home from the farmer’s market, she had not been expecting the house to have been decorated. A big pink banner that said Happy Birthday hung from the ceiling.

There were balloons everywhere.

“Surprise!” Ymir yelled.

Historia immediately started crying.

Ymir quickly rushed to Historia and just hugged her.

“I’m sorry. You all still did all this after what happened this morning? You’re really not mad? I just….it was always big parties with a lot of people I didn’t even like besides you all when you came. I just...no one asks me what I wanted.”

Ymir held her tighter.

“Come on, I made dinner,” Annie said.

They all sat at the table, including Sawney and Bean. The humans had steak and potatoes.

Everyone pretended not to see Levi giving them potatoes and pieces of steak.

“And cake!” Sasha pulled a large pink cake out of the fridge.

“When did you make that?” Historia asked.

“At 4:00 am this morning,” Sasha smiled as she sat the cake on the table.

“Candles are in the drawer over there,” Levi pointed in the general direction of the drawer holding the candles.

Ymir got up and grabbed them. Then she handed them to Sasha who put the candles into the cake.

Levi pulled a lighter out of his pocket and handed it to Sasha who lit the candles.

“Make a wish,” Mikasa said.

Historia closed her eyes for a moment and then blew out the candles.

“Knife?” Sasha asked as she looked to Levi.

“There’s a cake knife and server over in the knife drawer,” He answered as he began to clear the table.

“You’re so fancy, Levi,” Ymir laughed.

“Grab some of these plates. You’re on dish duty,” Levi’s voice was completely monotone.

“Why am I always on dish duty?” Ymir grumbled.

“Because you always have something smart to say,” Annie smirked.

“Fine….” Ymir gave in and picked the rest of the plates up.

“After cake,” Levi clarified as he put his part of the plates into the sink.

Sasha returned with the cake knife, server, and cake plates. She handed the knife to Historia as Levi and Ymir returned to the table.

Historia cut into the cake.

“It’s strawberry! My favorite!” Historia smile grew.

After dinner, Ymir did dishes while Mikasa and Annie got the gifts they had wrapped earlier in the day.

“Wait, you...you...you didn’t. You didn’t have to get me anything,” Historia said as she sat down in the middle of the couch.

Historia was very surprised. Gifts were not something she expected after everything. The dinner, cake, and decorations had been enough.

The gifts were sat down on the table while Levi and Sasha had grabbed two chairs from the sun room. They were much more comfortable than the chairs in the kitchen.

“We need a bigger couch,” Mikasa said as she sat down in one of the chairs from the sun room.

“There’s not enough room for Sawney and Bean,” Sasha said as she sat down on the couch.

“Are you saying we need a new couch because my dogs don’t fit with you or because you all can’t curl up into it like you did when you were thirteen?” Levi asked as he sat down in his chair.

“Both,” Annie answered before sitting on the other end of the couch.

Sawney and Bean chased one another so they didn’t seem to care about there not being any room on the couch for them.

“Ymir! Hurry up!” Sasha yelled.

“I’m trying!” A voice called from the kitchen.

Ymir finally finished cleaning the dishes and sat down into the empty chair.

“This one is from me,” Annie said as she handed Historia a gift bag.

Historia reached in and pulled out a bottle of her favorite perfume. It was very expensive and she was running out of it. She had been thinking about switching to something else.

“Annie…”

“Still more in there.”

Historia went through the rest of the gift bag. She pulled out a makeup pallet, several lipsticks, and other cosmetics.

“Wait, is this...it is! It’s the Powers of Light and Dark collection!” Historia squealed.

“That makeup set you kept tagging us in for contests?” Sasha asked.

“Yes! It’s been sold out everywhere. Annie, how did you get this?” Historia asked as she opened the makeup pallet.

“Hitch works at that makeup store in the mall. She saved me the collection,” Annie said with a shrug.

“I thought they weren’t allowed to,” Historia said before closing the pallet.

“Not supposed to but she may have put them in a different section of the store no one visits. I happened to find them there.”

“Thank you, Annie. Really. You should have saved your money though. I mean you’re having a kid…”

Annie waved her hand. “My insurance is great. It’s covering almost everything. Besides, I got to use Hitch’s discount. Don’t worry about it. You deserve it. You’re welcome.”

“Why is that such a popular item?” Levi asked. “It looks like every other makeup pallet I’ve seen.”

“How many makeup pallets have you seen, Levi?” Ymir asked.

“How many do the five of you own?”

“Touché.”

“Well it’s the names of the products. Half are named after powers of the Light, like goddess and angel. The other half are named after powers of Dark, like devil or demon. The pigment in them is absolutely amazing,” Historia explained as she put the makeup and perfume back into the gift bag.

“My turn!” Sasha said excitedly as she picked up one of the boxes. She handed it to Historia.

Historia was careful as she ripped the wrapping paper off of the gift. There was a beautiful box under the wrapping paper. Historia slowly opened the box and pulled the shoes out. There were a pair of pink stilettos that had spikes that one would see on a necklace or dog collar on them.

“I thought for our next concert, you could wear them on stage,” Sasha smiled.

“I love them,” Historia was about to cry again. Most of her shoe collection had been left behind at Reiss mansion.

“ My turn!” Mikasa said, not allowing Historia to start crying. She picked up the other box on the table and handed it to Historia.

“You didn’t...this has been enough,” Historia said.

“Well, we did. Just open it,” Ymir said.

“I’m with Ymir on this,” Mikasa said.

Historia nodded before she unwrapped and opened the box. She pulled out a pink studded designer leather purse. Historia stared at it and then looked at Mikasa.

“ It matches your shoes,” Mikasa smiled.

“I’m going to use it everyday,” Historia clutched her shoes and matching purse to her chest. “I’m going to wear these shoes everyday too.”

“Alright, this is from me,” Levi said as he used his foot to nudge the gift bag left on the table.

“You got me something?” Historia asked.

“It’s not a big deal,” He shrugged.

Historia reached into the bag and pulled out a new phone and a new case.

“It has all your old stuff on it too!” Mikasa added.

To say Historia hadn’t been expecting anything from Levi was an understatement. It was a beautiful rose gold phone, a newer model of her old phone. The case was pink and had floating glitter in it.

“Your old phone was out of date. They said you liked pink,” Levi shrugged.

“Thank you,” Historia whispered. She wasn’t used to having a parent figure care about her. Rod gave her things that made HIM look good. It was never in her favorite color.

“And we saved the best for last. It’s my turn,” Ymir said picking up the small box that was left on the table.

“So even after this morning…”Historia started.

“I give you a free pass because your biological father is a dick. Open it.”

Historia popped the box open to reveal a beautiful silver charm bracelet. It had music notes and treble clefs hanging from it.

“Ymir….” Historia started.

“Nope, your birthday. None of that,” Ymir smiled. “Stop crying, turn that new phone on. We’ve got to all take some selfies! That includes you, Levi.”

“Why would I do that?” Levi scoffed.

“Just one! It’ll be our family photo!” Sasha pleaded.

“Hange would probably like it if you sent it to her, “Annie shrugged.

“Come on, Levi. One picture isn’t going to kill you,” Mikasa said.

“Fine, but only one,” he gave in.

Levi wasn’t surprised that when he walked by 11:00 pm, the girls were asleep in Mikasa’s room with a movie still playing on the tv. How all five of them slept in that bed together was a mystery to him. It could not have been comfortable. He shook his head as he made his way into his room with Sawney and Bean following him.

His phone rang.

It was Hange.

“How was Historia’s birthday?” They asked.

“It went well. Rod Reiss is a dick,” he replied as he sat down on the bed.

“I thought we knew that,” Hange replied.

“We did but...he messed with the kids’ music. He used their contract against them. I know they’re hurt. I’m thinking about contacting you know who,” Levi sighed.

“Make copies. Don’t give him an original copy of anything,” Hange instructed him.

“I know that much. You know once I do this, there’s no going back. If you think it’s a bad idea…”

“I don’t. Take Rod Reiss down or sleep on it and then take him down.”

Levi sighed again.

“Anything else happen today?” Hange asked.

“I forgot to tell you the other day, Ymir asked if Kenny tortured people. She said the chains were either for that or we had a sex dungeon.”

Hange’s laughter was uncontrollable on the other end of the phone.

“It’s not that funny.”

“No, it’s hilarious. What did you tell her?”

“Nothing. I just walked away. I’ve still got all these dead bugs from Kenny left for you.”

“I’ll be over tomorrow!”

SnK 119 Thoughts

In the next thrilling episode of things going much worse than they needed to, all my fake internet money is going towards Historia actually incubating Eren’s missing leg under her shirt.

Through the power of Paths he rips his way out of Historia’s stomach while NPC Farmer Guy watches in complete horror and Levi bleeds out on the kitchen table because everyone is too distracted by the latest bloody mess.

The rest of the manga is just devoted to extreme Biblical discourse over who is playing which part in the story, and how many ways can they be Frankensteined together.

With bonus points going to Levi sharing Jesus’ birthday.

Christ Bowl: Resurrection.

Like Serum Bowl only somehow worse for everyone.

Okay so a lot happened.

I wanna make sure I’ve got it.

Lessee.

Yeah.

So.

A bunch of people died.

Reiner was not one of them, because death would impede the manga’s one constant of Reiner suffering.

That’s it, that’s the chapter.

Geez, okay. So in one corner we’ve got all of the folks who Zeke turned into titans. And Zeke actually made that cog of the plot spin forward. So we’ve got a city full of titans. In previous times this was undesired and bad, and it still sort of is, but the people these titans will eat are Marleyan soldiers, so it’s a lot easier to not feel so bad about the cannibalism.

Then we’ve got Porco Galliard.

Who is apparently dead now.

Falco, who is not dead, no longer has a brother. Because Colt wanted to hug his baby brother during his time of need more than he wanted to live. So Colt’s dead too.

Zeke is somehow not dead. Still.

Gabi is keeping up the Braun tradition of living to survive further trauma.

Mikasa, Armin, Jean, and Connie continue to be good children who deserve only nice things as they try to clean up the mess their one friend has managed to create around them.

And Eren’s head gets blown off.

Which it’s sort of hard to argue he doesn’t deserve, all things considered. ‘All things’ including the part where he’s probably not going to stay dead if he even reaches that point.

...

Okay.

My main desire with this post is really just to scribble red marker everywhere and draw tiny explosions with the footnote, “things went wrong,” and leave it at that. This is very much one of this series’ chapters where I’d prefer to simply wait for what’s coming than to try to produce something meaningful over what we have.

The temptation to say this is all very rushed is very present, but I think that’s just because two characters with names die and the entire upper brass turns into titans in the space of forty pages.

Galliard’s been getting the crap beaten out of him every single fight. The impressive part is that he stays alive long enough to do something with his death instead of just getting killed.

Colt... yeah, people in hysterics don’t make good choices. I’ll come back to him with kinder words later, but mainly that.

I think I’m just a little in shock that the plot actually moved. While it’s gotten better over the years, the manga is still very much designed around paving a foundation with exposition, then hitting every single relevant beat of said exposition without pausing for air.

The threat of the military turning into titans has been around for months. It just. Finally really happened.

...Look, the manga might not want to take a breather, but I sure do. This is a lot of action dropping a lot of seeds, and part of me is still stuck on the fact that the grand titanization actually happened, and Galliard actually gets nommed.

Oki doki then.

Yay for fewer swords dangling over everyone?

Probably also a no on Jaws breaking Annie out? Falco won’t have the control to do it gently any time soon, and Falco, being a precious beacon of goodness, is not going to feel comfortable just cracking Annie open.

Hell. Some months I think would really go better without a post. With monthly series, there’s usually something each month that’s worth words, and I do think this still qualifies, but this really could use the cushioning of its future chapters. So many boxes got checked off for things happening so fast that it’s hard to gauge their impact. The smoke’s still clearing, and detailing the quality of the rising dust and ashes is not high on entertainment.

Oh well, into the cloud we go.

Colt and Falco; Porco and Marcel; Eren and Zeke. Brothers! Brothers feeling brotherly feelings and relating to each other through said feelings!

Or a series of older brothers severely traumatizing their younger siblings and making everything much worse by trying to be good big brothers in ways that lead to dead bodies littering the streets.

Reiner’s entire post-Warrior Candidate life happens because Marcel wants to keep his little brother safe.

It’s Zeke’s fault, but Colt hugging Falco means that Falco’s transformation kill Colt.

Zeke and Eren. Uh.

Bring out the red marker, because I think it would take less time to outline what area of the plot their grand plan hasn’t rained destruction all over.

This isn’t Evangelion, but good grief, if ever you wanted examples of people caring for each other as badly as they possibly can while maintaining vaguely good intentions, the sibling relationships covered in this chapter have your back.

Colt, to his credit, really is trying to be a good big brother, but. On the list of things Falco did not need, burning his brother to death is pretty high up there.

I’m going to try to stop being stunned by the fact this chapter really did happen now.

Colt, Gabi, and Falco have all been raised in an environment that encouraged hating themselves. The pinnacle of achievement in their lives is to be honored sacrifices for a country who doesn’t think they deserve life.

Gabi's been the star player in that show. Her innocence shatters with her psyche, and this arc has not been gentle in detailing that. She goes from being proud of her status and blowing things up with a laugh to shooting her greatest enemy in tears.

Falco’s been the precious cinnamon roll. He’s unfailingly kind. His goal has always been small: protect Gabi. He adjust to what he sees in front of him, and if it completely changes his worldview, that’s only the background. He’s still here for Gabi.

Colt, from the moment we meet him, is protecting his little brother. He picks Falco up and drags him away from trouble.

He’s Zeke’s successor, in theory. He doesn’t want Falco to ever inherit a Titan. That’s his role in the family. Their entire family is protected from the shame of his uncle’s rebellion through Colt volunteering.

Colt’s just a boy too.

Canon’s very familiar with child soldiers. Our cast is full of them. The land inside the walls has always been presented as a cruel world, and the fact that children regularly die training to become soldiers is their standard.

Warrior Candidates train so they will die.

Colt doesn’t join up because it’s better than working in the fields. It isn’t about saving face. His family’s quality of life is dependent on him doing everything he can to be the shiniest sacrifice of his age group.

It isn’t surprising that Marley uses children for their Warriors.

They’re eager to please and haven’t learned that they have personal agency. With the way Marley raises them, the goal is keeping them from ever learning that lesson to any functional degree. They obey and obey and obey until they die or their sanity snaps.

Because maybe it’ll get better. This small ray of hope is the only way out for their people or their families. Maybe.

Colt’s young. His mentor betrays his country, and now Zeke is the only thing standing between his little brother being okay or an inhuman monster.

The logical thing for Colt is to run straight up to Zeke, the leading spear of the enemy offensive, and beg him to wait for a little while so that Falco can get out of the line of fire. That’s what he has to work with. His love for his little brother and his confidence that the man he’s trained under doesn’t really want to hurt children.

Colt doesn’t understand the world any better than Gabi does, really.

He thinks, because he has a good heart, that that’s how people are. He thinks that the man who set up an entire plan based around robbing people of their autonomy will care more about a little boy than seeing that plan bear fruit.

He thinks it’s enough to argue that he loves his little brother.

Marleyans, Eldians. Those are just lines in the sand. They don’t really mean anything next to something like family. Colt’s little brother is right here, and Zeke can protect him.

So instead of running as far away from Zeke as possible from the start, Colt runs toward him and begs him for just a little time.

That was never going to work.

Colt thought it was worth the chance.

Much like every single Warrior Candidate since the program began.

Maybe it will work. Maybe this will save everyone.

Colt dies holding his little brother. There’s no point to it. It makes Falco more panicked than what’s already about to happen to him. It puts both of them at risk instead of just one.

Because Colt’s just a dumb kid, and he thinks that the most important thing he can do in his last moments of life is let his little brother know that he’s there.

He could have lived if he let Falco be on his own, but his life wasn’t what Colt cared about. So he dies.

He dies, and Porco spends his last moments making sure that Falco still has a chance to live.

Marcel hides his brother away from the supposed honor he’s earned to keep him safe. Marcel never wanted Porco to be a Titan. He wanted his kid brother safe, even if it meant never seeing him again.

Porco finally has the truth, and then he spots these two dumb kids running into a warzone for the same reason.

Marcel tried so hard to spare Porco this hell. It didn’t work. Porco found his way there anyway. And if he’s dying anyway, he’s going to die for something that can actually do some good.

Way to follow your big brother’s example, Pock.

None of this is going to help Reiner in any section of his life. At this point you have to hope the guy lives, just so surviving all of this can be something more than a trauma conga line. I could say something about how the most actively suicidal character of the present manga is continually denied death, and I’m sure it would be profound, but really by now I just feel bad for the guy.

I’m not sure any of these people want to be here, come to think of it.

I’m even less clear on why all of them being here is according to keikaku.

In other news, Eren gets shot.

After all his friends, once again, do their damnedest to keep him alive through his complete lack of regard for them. Without their help, Eren’s dead long before Gabi steps in.

Say thanks, Eren.

Gabi shooting people even after she’s learned that the world is horrifying and complicated should probably elicit something from me, but I’ve long been in the mode of wanting the kid to be left alone with a warm blanket and a hug. Add one more reason to the list.

Plus, there’s shooting people, then there’s shooting Eren.

Knowing far more about Eren than Gabi ever will, I’m not sure I’d want him to make contact with Zeke either. Gabi has made a trillion worse judgment calls.

It’s also somewhat appropriate.

Gabi is only there because Eren destroyed her home. She’s only alive because Sasha cared about letting a little girl live when Eren didn’t. Sasha was only there because Eren manipulated all of his friends into a combat situation none of them wanted.

I’m sure Eren has his reasons, and I’m sure when he inevitably dies for real I’ll have all kinds of emotions about it, but this is a case of him reaping what he sowed.

Hell, the gun’s got a scope and everything. The scene is crying out for a ghost of Sasha superimposed over Gabi.

Sorry your head got fucking blown off, Eren, maybe you should make better life choices.

Because what I keep ending up stuck on is why this is all happening. Clearly, now that this road has been chosen, there are a few things that demand attention, but this is such a finicky, overwrought way of trying to get two bros to hold hands.

“Let’s start a war!”

“Cool!”

Would it have been so hard to just kidnap Zeke.

I’m sure it would have raised some flags.

But.

I just feel like most of this could have been easily avoided by. you know. doing literally anything else. The exact trajectory of this plan can’t possibly be necessary. It isn’t even going well. Eren’s missing his head, Zeke is approaching Reiner levels of plot armor to keep him breathing, and all that’s really been achieved is creating a bunch of new titans and killing some people they could have killed anywhere else.

The plan itself is fundamentally destructive, yet they’ve still managed to make it destructive in a way that actively interferes with the plan going anywhere.

Congrats, gents.

Some random eight-year-old with a sniper rifle destroyed all your hard work.

Much surprise. Very wow.

The explanation for all of this is going to be something incredible.

Either because it’ll be brilliant or because it will continue the downward spiral into the chaotic groupthink of the Yeager Bros and their one brain cell.

I’m okay with whichever the story wants to go with.
