i completed the coursework for an art history degree and all i got was this lousy obsession with the aestheticization of pulmonary tuberculosis

The most horrifying aspect of parents saying "my kid could do that" about art is that they never ever ever mean "wow my kid is good enough to be in a museum" and they always always always mean "I want to disrespect you so much I'll do it by implying that this thing is just as worthless as the things my child makes with their hands" and right in front of them too. Your kids can hear you u know, and the things they make with their hands are the least worthless and most precious aspects of human life I'll kill u

That post going around about how art museums suck and curators are allergic to work is very much "man who has never been to any other art museum: This museum is so much like the met"-coded and weirdly anti-intellectua/STEMcel feeling. There are so many curators out there doing the work to connect people to art!!! I haven't been to an exhibit like the one they describe (unconnected unexplained painting collections with tiny wall text) in years (except for the Met, see above, they really are like that-- and often only parts of them; I find that the Cloisters really goes the extra mile to contextualize their collection, maybe only because it's such a wacky collection that if you put it all in one room with no context no one, not even medievalists, would enjoy it even a little bit. But I digress).
Every major exhibit I have been to in the past decade (and I go to A Lot of art museums) and many many minor ones have made a tremendous effort to interpret and explain the context of the art, even if major pieces are not in the collection. Yes it is bullshit that rich people get massive tax breaks (no, not just clout, it's a money laundering scheme) for "donating" their art. But let's not confuse the shitty tax law in this country for a conspiracy by art curator "elites" trying to fuck over the layperson. Thank u.

This is so so stupid and I"ll probably delete later but there's something that's been driving me NUTS for YEARS and I need SOMWHERE to scream about it and I'm buzzed and tired so it might as well be here
Writers, video essayists, and would-be academics of all kinds, this is your formal PSA: a Memento Mori is NOT a memento of one person who has died. It IS an artistic reminder of our own mortality- a reminder to the viewer of the very fact that they are mortal and will die some day, ashes-to-ashes style. Your locket of your dead lover's hair is not a memento mori unless it also has, like, a skull engraved on it with a fuckin' bible verse or some shit meant to make you feel something about your OWN inevitable death.
A memento mori isn't about the deceased- it's about you, the eventually-to-be-deceased.

You mentioned taking sociology. I'm planning on taking sociology, what are the classes like?
Not sure how much I can help, cause I took an intro to sociology course my freshman year, so I’m trying to remember one class from about 4 years ago. But here’s what I remember.
-Lots of definitions, memorization is your friend
-Everything is in some sort of framework. You’re analyzing the same thing through different lenses. Different people think differently for different reasons.
-a lot of sociology is dissecting opinions. My teacher really rewarded discussion participation. A lot of times we ended up discussing our own opinions on issues and dissecting how we felt about it.
it was one of the easiest classes I’ve ever taken, cause it was 90% just talking about things and applying terms to them. If anyone else wants to jump in and talk about sociology, you’re probably better informed than I am.

Every time you are in the modern and contemporary art section of a museum and think angrily “why does this deserve to be in a museum???” I encourage you to actually go and answer that question.
Look at the name of the piece and when it was made, do those give you any clues? What about what it was made from? Google the artist, what in their life would have caused them to make it, what did they say about it? It’s worth it.

Not sure if it's just me because my eyesight it's not the best but the color of the background and the font made it a bit hard to read other than that i love the start and can't wait for more
ah hell, still?
okay, it's late here at the moment, so i'll have a look in the morning— then reblog this when i've done it so you can, collectively, check it over and get back to me
i might just overhaul all the colours and redo them completely, to be honest— would you be able to tell me whether it's dark or light mode that's causing issues? or is it the tumblr?
i'm glad you're enjoying it overall though!!
