heads up, this post discusses the sixties scoop and other settler colonial states' taking Indigenous children from their families

was following a blog on here called haveyoureadthisqueerbook and was enjoying my time there. they posted a poll about tj klune's the house in the cerulean sea. if you don't know, it's a cutesy romance story set in a magical version of london. a bunch of magical kids live in an orphanage and a government employee comes out to check on their wellbeing and then ends up falling in love with the manager

while this is all well and good, the author was specifically inspired by the sixties scoop, a period of time in canada where First Nations children were removed from their families and communities and placed in white homes or orphanages. this is an insidious practice in settler colonial states and (in australia at least) to this day, Indigenous children are taken from their homes at a much higher rate than non-Indigenous children.

as far as i know, the author has never apologised or addressed this. using this trauma as impetus for this book is pretty gross as the children end up loving both their new caregiver and the government employee who is there to determine their wellbeing (the implication therefore that the children were better off being removed as they could find a new/better family)

i added a comment to the post saying something along the lines of "hey it's important to highlight the author's appropriation of First Nations trauma when discussing this book." i waited a day or so, never got a reply, worried that i never actually commented, checked the post and saw the my reply was hidden!! i then messaged the blog asking why and they blocked me???????

i'm absolutely baffled because i legit never attacked the blog or said they shouldn't have posted the poll, just gave a general heads up highlighting an important issue with the text. anyways not sure what i expected but pretty piss poor effort tbh

I gotta be honest I'm surprised it's never mentioned that perhaps one reason (cis) men became the dominant gender thousands of years ago in most societies is because approximately 25% of (cis) women are in horrible crippling pain at any given time. like idk I'm no sociologist or ancient historian but I feel like the fact that an entire half of the population is basically sick 1/4th of the time (or even more with PMS- before I was on birth control I was ill or in pain in some way for 2 weeks out of every month) might've played a part in the other half of the population having a bit of an advantage.
