hi can you recommend the best way to break into the fanfic world on here? i'm new, yay, and don't know how the tagging system or anything works

Oooh! Exciting!! YAY! 🎉🎉 Firstly, welcome, welcome. How wonderful it is that you wanna write and share something with us all, that's so cool! ✨️

I suppose the best way to break in, is to take the leap. I know, groundbreaking advice Jett, right? Hehe! 😆

From experience, these are all things I've learnt and had guidance on myself during my time on wacky Tumblr, so here are my pearls of wisdom for ya...

So you've written the fic. WOO! 🎉 Now what? Well, firstly, have a treat. Some cake or vodka, or both. You've earned it. 🍰

Then, when you're no longer hungover and throwing up cake, do these things:

And make yourself a banging banner of some kind, or use a picture/GIF. I'm personally more likely to be drawn to a fic to read if there's a cool banner, or you've made a mood board or have a GIF. Kinda sets the tone, you know? We love a bit of the ol' aesthetic. Like a bookcover, we're immediately drawn in with our eyes. Be creative, go nuts. Use the free trial of Canva to go design crazy.

Check it through for grammar and spelling as much as you can.

You can always have someone beta read it for you. And look at your formatting to ensure you don't have massive spaces between your paragraphs etc... When I copy and paste into Tumblr, it screws up the formatting from Google docs, just to test my already thin thread of patience further, no doubt... 😑 It's not a massive deal, but I guess presentation is a hook in itself, right?

Beware of glitches when saving your drafts on Tumblr too. The app especially loves to auto-post it when you hit save, 🤬 so double check you're saving it in draft, not in post, before you're ready to post it to the world.

Everyone has their owns tastes and comforts when reading fic, and quite rightly so. Variety is the spice of life. 🌶 And look, you'll NEVER please everyone. So don't even try. But what is important is that you give the reader a choice to read it or not.

⚠️🚫🔞👉🏻👌🏻 Ensure you list any trigger warnings.

Look, there's this age old debate that continually surfaces on whether we should list every single trigger or warning in our fic, or should we just... not? 🤔

The simple answer is, it's up to you, ultimately. Not everyone does this or feels the need to do this. I mean, published books don't, right?

HOWEVERRRRR. And it's a capital letter however. There are so many people who won't want to read stories about certain topics. Age Gap, Anal, Noncon etc...

Kinda looks like a sandwich to me... I'm hungry 🥪

I personally won't release a fic without listing all the triggers as I don't want any of my readers to encounter something that could be triggering for them later on. Yes, to some degree it can give away "spoilers" but it's up to you as the writer ultimately about how much you want to give away. If you fic contains Age Gap, you can simply write "Age Gap."

Use the Read More/Keep Reading divider.

It looks like this on the app:

Some people write a paragraph or two before they place it on, others hide the whole fic and just leave the intro/warnings etc... on show. How you do it is up to you, but please, please use it!

Nobody likes to scroll through a whole chapter of 10k+ words trying to get to the next post... nobody. Cue ranty Anons in your mailbox if you don't. We've all been there and made that mistake. 😬

Plus, using this will also hide any explicit or triggering content from immediate view. People more than likely won't read your fic if you don't have one of these on it.

# Tagging

Tagging - to tag or not to tag?

Tagging is a massive topic, but essentially it boils down to two types of tagging.

Tagging using a # which is at the bottom of each of your posts, and tagging people in your posts by using the @ and then their username.

So say, for example, you've written a Joel Miller fic.

Oh, hey Joel... we're talking about you handsome, not to you.

You can tag it "joel miller" or "joel miller tlou" or "joel miller x reader" etc... People can follow the tag, so they'll see your work in it if they're following it.

If you search the tag on Tumblr it'll tell you how many people are following that tag too, so you'll know which ones are more popular and will be seen by the most eyes.

Currently (as of writing this response) the 'Joel Miller' tag has 225k followers! 👀 So if you write a Joel Miller fic, you deffo want one of your first 5 tags to be that one!

☝🏻Note that the first 5 tags you use are the ones that Tumblr actually uses to make your fic show up in those tags too. You can put up to 30 tags on a fic and yet Tumblr only counts the first 5. Dumb, I know. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The rest is just for your own use to find it again on your blog.

If you search your own blog using "Joel Miller" everything you've ever posted with Joel Miller will come up. So you can use your own tags or words for yourself too. I use "Jett's fic recs" for example, when I re-blog someone's fic so I can find it again.

⚠️ And you can use tags to highlight triggers too, for example you can write "tw blood" for a blood warning. (tw = trigger warning) People can block tags so certain things don't show up in their feed as a way of shielding themselves from content they don't want to see/read. So if I've blocked "tw blood" I won't ever see your fic, even with all the other tags you use.

So be mindful of how you tag, not only for yourself, but for others too.

And essentially tags are how some people choose to comment and interact with you. Some people write mini fics in the tags! It's really quite fun. Just remember, there's a limit of 30 tags per post and put your best 5 first.

You can also tag users! You can offer up a tag list to users who you think might be interested in reading your fic (feel free to tag me, I'd love to read it!) A lot of writers have a bunch of regular readers who they'll tag @ username on their works. They're called tag lists. Readers may reach out to you to ask to be tagged too.

There's no shame in hyping your own work - you wrote it, be proud of it! 🙌🏻

Others choose not to do this and instead create a side blog for notifications of their works. It's up to you how you choose to do this, but if you tag specific people, chances are they're going to read your work because they want to.

You can tag up to 50 users on a single post, I believe. (Or at least it's 50 users and 50 links when I do my fic rec lists) I think it varies if you're on app or desktop. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong... but there is deffo a limit.

Reblog your own work for time zones.

So, I'm in the UK and the majority of my followers are in the USA, so when I'm in bed snoozing away, they're awake and reading smut at work.... 😏 So I'll schedule my fic to release at various points in the day and night so everyone can see it on their feed.

Keep it circling too, I'll go back and re-blog older works when more people follow me so they don't miss out. And as a writer, you'll want people to love your older works as much as the new.

And finally, some basic etiquette...

Please don't be disheartened if your fic doesn't get the traction you want right away.

It does not mean that your writing isn't good. We all started in the fandom with 0 followers and 0 reblogs. Its important to remember to write, first and foremost, for your own enjoyment. The right people will find you and love your work, it just takes a bit of time.

You can jazz your fic up with dividers and GIFs. Just ensure you give credit by @ tagging the person who made the divider you're using, if you choose to use one, and use the GIF search function on Tumblr for your GIFs, as they auto tag and credit the creator of the GIF for you. And that way, everyone stays happy. ✌🏻

And finally...

Interact with your comments and reblogs. People took the time to read your work, even just a simple thank you back is always appreciated and well received.

Re-blog, re-blog, re-blog what you love!

The like button is for bookmarking only. It does absolutely nothing to make posts get seen like it does on other socials. Re-blogging is what gets yours and others work seen and put on people's feeds on Tumblr. If you want people to re-blog your own work, you'll need to give back and re-blog theirs too. Tumblr is all about sharing in the form of re-blogs.

Being the newest rookie to join the RPD was much like any other job, it had it's ups and downs. But they're easier to face when you have a partner like Leon Kennedy. Another rookie cop much like you who was ready to serve and protect, you know you can always count on him and that sweetly adorable face that's always so determined to help in any way he can. However, fighting a zombie outbreak wasn't what either of you had signed up for.

Nor was it on your list to be hidden away in a room of the department where you can freely be a moaning, crying mess at Leon's dick rutting into your slippery cunt while an older version of him, who turns out to be your husband some time in the future, keeps you caged in place between them. From an outside perspective, no words in the human language could explain how batshit crazy that sounds. Who can deny that?

Plus he's practically the spinning image of your partner. Just older, beautifully older might you add because time has been very very kind to him, somewhere in his 30's he mentioned earlier. Older Leon deeply hums while gently nibbling your ear, smirking to himself at the sight of goosebumps raising on your skin wherever his lips touched, "Good to know."

You would've shyly hid your gaze from him again if your position between the two blondes wasn't changed, finding yourself being slowly sunk back down onto rookie's cock again with a soft gasp just as he buries his face in your neck to conceal a loud groan at your tight heat taking him again. Pretty blue eyes then silently look to his elder counterpart for some assistance, which he's more than happy to provide by grabbing the supple flesh of your hips to pick you up and whispers, "She likes it like this."

Then grinds you down on rookie in a way that has your eyes rolling in the back of your head, much to the agent's pleasured little grin. Meanwhile, the sweet little rookie cop can't help but subconsciously bite into the crook of your neck to fight back another loud moan almost bordering on a whimper- and fuck was it cute. So cute you had to reach back to run your fingers through his hair with a quiet whimper. Which you feel him smile at, he definitely gets the gist now.

Rookie uses his arm to hook your leg up while the agent hoists up the other and squishes you closer. Leaving you suspended off the floor in a spicy little sandwich as rookie Leon pistons his dick into your aching walls, while agent Leon's fingers return to lovingly play with your sopping wet clit that was begging for some attention. Once again filling the room with an array of raunchy squelching and heavy breathes against sweaty skin. So messy.

James and Dave were supposed best friends. Although, their feelings for each other began to change after awhile of hanging out.

Dave, had an attraction for James. Though, he didn’t like the idea of falling inlove with a boy. While James, he didn’t care if he fall inlove with a boy, but if it’s Dave.. it’s a big no to him.

So of course the friendship between them was.. interesting to say the least. Until one certain night.

Metallica had just finished another gig, they were just as drunk as you think they would be. Especially Dave. Hence, caused him to come up to James.

“James?” Dave tapped James’ shoulder, trying to get his attention.

“Yeah? What’s up?” James turns to Dave.

“Can we talk in private, real quick?”

“Sure.”

Dave lead James to a more secluded area. Where the two of them were alone, the tension grew upon the two boys. Their eyes locked together.

James just looked at Dave, with a odd look on his face. He never expected Dave to say that. Ever.

Dave looks up to James slightly, slight tears welling up on his eyes. This affected him. It did. It was all complicated, a complicated feeling and friendship they had.

Eventually, James walks away. Leaving Dave alone, left with his own thoughts. He was confused, and a feeling of slight dread was on his mind. Knowing the later hangouts with James will and can be awkward.

NCIS Hawai'i 3x05

How can we be half way through the season already? ☹️

Firstly, whoever chose to put Lucy in that suit is owed a pay rise 👌🏻

I love that they gifted us a Lucy-centric episode and I love that they gave us a little more insight into Lucy's family. I feel like it must be leading somewhere, if not this season but perhaps next season. Lucy's parents showing up in Hawai'i? A road trip to Texas? At least, I hope so, because it left me wanting to know more about that family dynamic.

It felt intentional that Lucy said she has nothing to do with the family business - not her family. We heard her talking about the fact that her parents aren't going to give her a big family wedding because of her sexuality, but I've always got the impression that she has some sort of relationship with them, even if they're not close.

It's interesting to me that we've seen Lucy push Kate to be more open about her brother, when she herself is a closed book when it comes to talking about her family. She wants more than she can give herself.

Another thing I'm curious about is Lucy's brothers and the comment that her eldest brother is having personal problems, which is why Michael is taking over the family business. Ever since 2x20 and the way Lucy knew how to talk to Joe, I've wondered if she has someone in her family or past who struggles with their mental health and I wonder if that person is her eldest brother?

I needed way more worried!Kate in this episode. I love that all three guys text her (no call???) and I felt it when she snapped at them, but I feel like we saw more tension from her in 1x11 when Lucy's undercover mission went wrong than in this episode. Less Sam, more Kate please.

And oh, that Kacy scene at the end was so lovely.

"I waited as long as I could" "I didn't realise I missed you so much - or how strong you are" "It was only twelve hours" ... "It felt longer"

I love how much they love each other. 🥰

Also...

Give me Lucy and Kate curled up on the couch watching crappy television please.

Lucy's reaction to Camille was so good, I love her teasing relationship with Kai. Also, Ernie and Jesse watching the CCTV footage of them at the hotel. 😂

That said, I'm suspicious of Camille. I don't really have a good reason why, except wondering why she's there and why we've met her so quickly. (Especially because we still haven't met Heather!) Maybe I'm being irrational but I'm staying suspicious for now.

10-What is something about Obi-Wan that drives Luminara crazy?

The fact that Obi-Wan is such a sexy, suave guy that women, specifically Ventress, feel comfortable enough being flirty with him and Luminara DOES NOT like it one bit. Her blood boils at the thought of that scheming scum tossing her skirt and being suggestive with Obi-Wan and she wants nothing more than to fist fight her 😂 Luminara isn’t a jealous woman per se, it just drives her nuts that other women just feel that comfortable to flaunt themselves onto him despite being with him.

11- What is something about Luminara that drives Obi-Wan crazy?

The fact that Luminara is all too willing to self sacrifice when there are still alternatives would drive Obi-Wan insane. He would constantly go out of his way to ensure her that her life has value ❤️.

41-Describe what Kenduli fanfic you’d love to read.

I would love to read more Kenduli fic in which they’re able to reunite/be together post Order 66 like somehow Luminara found her way to Obi-Wan or Obi-Wan was able to save her from death from the Imperials and they’re able to live peacefully on Tatooine watching over Luke until it’s Rebellion time. If no one else will write it, I certainly will one day! 😁

42-Describe what Kenduli art you’d love to see?

Literally anything would make me happy since there’s so few but I would love to see more domestic Kenduli like they’re just dancing together at home or they’re on a date somewhere, but like I said I’d love any and all crumbs 😄

I'm trying to write for the first time, but I am scared to even post it. Do you have advice for first time writers like me? Also, love your Growing Strong fic! It's so well done. I always look forward to when you post a new chapter <3

First, I just wanna say that I’m honored that you’re asking for my opinion🥲🖤 Second, thank you so much for reading Growing Strong! That is very sweet of you to say😊 And third, congrats on taking the leap to write! Just this time last year, I had yet to be active on here, so I know the leap can be scary, but it has also been super rewarding.

I could probably go on and on about all the stuff I’ve learned, but I’ll try to keep this short and succinct so it’s more digestible to read.😅 But if you have any follow up questions, or want me to address something more specific that I didn’t mention, please do not hesitate to send me another ask, or even message me. I will gladly talk til the cows come home if there’s even a chance something I say could be of use.

1) Before I mention anything else, in case this resonates with you as much as it does me, my most important piece of advice is this: comparison is the thief of joy. I’m 100% guilty of looking at the stats of other fics on here and AO3 and internally putting my own works down or just feeling bad about myself because of it. It might be tempting to look at other fics to kinda gauge where your own in standing in terms of interaction from others, but I really recommend not doing so if you can help it.

2) On the flip side of number 1, don’t be afraid to look at other fics and see what works. Before anyone @s me, I’m not talking plagiarism. But concepts. For example, an Aemond X OC enemies to lovers fic? That would probably be received well, since it’s a popular trope in a popular fandom right now. But even more technically, don’t underestimate the power of tags. See what tags other authors are using for similar fics in the fandom. That’s gonna be the best way to get the fic out there and seen, especially here on tumblr.

3) Edit and proofread. I’m sure this is an obvious one. But (coming from a reader perspective) this can be a uch an underrated asset to a fic.

4) Don’t get yourself feeling down if there’s not an immediately overwhelming response to your posted fic. If there is, that’s great! If not, that doesn’t mean anything at all, I promise! Depending on the fandom, where the fic is being posted, and how frequently updates for ongoing stories are being uploaded, it can take some time to get a following for it. This is also something I’ve been guilty of. But, if your fic is out there, eventually, people will find it.

5) Respond to comments/asks/even reblogs with commentary. (Unless they’re downright negative and counterproductive. I would not recommend entertaining any of those with a response. Fortunately, I don’t think things like that are frequent much at all.) But if someone leaves a compliment, reply back, even if it’s just to say thanks!😊 When I leave a comment on a fic I really enjoyed, and the author takes a moment to respond, it literally can make my day.

6.) Make some mutuals. A lot of the earliest friends I made on here were authors writing in the same fandom, and even just fellow readers. This is not a requirement by any means, but I can’t understate the value of having people to talk about fandom things with. You can bounce ideas off one another, etc. Plus, friendships formed from a mutual love of something is just👌🏻🖤 And if you already have some mutuals, ask them if they’d like to take a look at what you’ve got going on and if they would be willing to provide some feedback😊

7.) Write for yourself. This is probably related to several of the points I’ve already made, but it can’t be said enough. If you want to write because you truly want to, I believe it’s best to do it for yourself. You might end up spending a lot of time writing something, so it might as well be something that makes you happy. If you only write for likes (nothing against people who do) you might get burned out, and be unable to take any joy from it. But if you write something you love, anyone else who also enjoys it will be icing on top of the cake, since you already made yourself happy by writing it.

8.) Have fun with it. Life is too short not to.

ALL OF THEM. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 No, seriously. My fave thing to do is browse through The Pedro Library, compiled by the amazing @littlemisspascal. Go to the Marcus page and just lose a full day to reading. She does an incredible job curating this huge list and I found several of the fics mentioned below by just spending some time looking through the library.

Hahahahaa okay but here, let me compile my absolute favorites because there are some top notch Marcus fics out there.

Show me Your True Colors by @221bshrlocked. Top notch dom!Marcus action. Maggie's dirty talk always makes me blush, and this is no exception.

Agent Pike Series by @absurdthirst. Not gonna lie, this one broke me. The last part, where they "play" in the holding cells? Head empty, brain scrambled egg.

know better and feel better by @ezrasbirdie. CW: Daddy kink. This part lives RENT FREE in my brain: "What did you call him? And can you call him that again? And if you call him that again, can he fuck you until you cry for him? Can he do it again and again; can he make you his baby?" I THINK OF THIS WAY TOO MUCH.

desires & complications ALSO by @ezrasbirdie (babe I'm just lurking on your masterlist to create this list). If you like a little Dave York with your Marcus, this is the fic for you. Marcus invites your ex-boyfriend, Dave, over to er... show him how to be a little rougher with you in bed. And then he panics in bisexual. It's amazing. Dave is unexpectedly soft, and all three of them are so fucking cute.

Stressed series by @generallybrontidefeelings. I know I've gushed about this one SEVERAL times already, but it just DESERVES that much attention. Featuring Marcus as a visiting forensics professor, who you have a massive crush on (who wouldn't), and who helps you... get out of your head... when the semester is finally over. The soft!Dom is strong with this one. I've lost count of how many times I've read this.

unexpected by @mandocrasis. This is another one I've screamed about before but I'll do it again. This little exchange BROKE me: "Marcus’ smile colors his words. “Green what?” “Green, sir,” " UHHHHHHHHHHH.

Duality by @imtryingmybeskar. I mean, I've written and read some MARATHON smut, but this fic takes the absolute cake. These two DO NOT STOP FUCKING. It is impressive. Truly, some of the chapters are just wall-to-wall fucking; their Marcus is absolutely INSATIABLE. WOOF. Someone check on Reader. Does she need some water?

Dancing In the Dark by @blueeyesatnight. You and Marcus are staked out at a cabin, when the power goes out. When you start to panic, he tries to distract you by making you guess objects by touch and... it quickly gets out of hand.

Read You Like a Book by @the-ginger-hedge-witch. The ultimate Marcus Pike fic. The cornerstone. The one that made me terrified to write and post my own Marcus series because who could ever compare, you know? This fic is BEAUTIFUL. I can't even give a good, coherent review. Just go read it. Ren just GETS Marcus.

Because even if he’s technically free, he is still a tool. Still a mystery to himself in every way that matters.

August 10th is just a day. The same four walls with a fresh coat of paint.

It’s only a mission, but it feels like a curse. Like the way your toes sometimes seize up while you sleep, the tendons of your legs stiff and immovable.

It’s only a mission, he tells himself—exactly what is expected of the shinobi named Tenzo.

And even if it isn’t Root, it’s still a darkness. Still a black hole he pours himself into with every breath, digging deeper into an abyss he is unsure he can climb out of.

ANBU.

August 10th is just the start date of a mission. Hastily scrawled on a scroll delivered to him in secret with the mask of the Cat.

It’s only an exchange, but his heart isn’t in it. Like handing money to the clerk at the convenience store, except he’s naked, slick, and sticky.

It’s not his team, as much as he might want it to be. He’s only filling in for his senpai until he recovers, so there’s every reason not to get attached.

It’s only a team—even if sometimes it feels like a family.

But that can’t be right because even if he’s technically welcome, he’s still just a placeholder. A soldier with the correct skillset for the assignment.

There is no way he will be allowed to stay here, no matter how much his heart yearns for it.

August 10th is just the day he first calls himself Yamato. Introduces himself to just another transient group in a long line of doomed associations.

It’s just an invitation, but it feels like hope. Like a door is opening and if he can just force his feet to march through it, he might find the path he’s been seeking for so long.

Because your hand feels warm in his, soft and familiar. And when you tug on his arm as you watch a shooting star, he can’t help that his heart leaps in his chest.

It’s just a title, but it feels like a new name; a better one than any of the others. Like someone has decided, “this is who you are” and he finally agrees with them.

It’s just a single word, even if he must blink back the soft glistening in his eyes before they notice.

Because sensei sounds so good when it’s shouted by the exuberant group before him, even when it falls sarcastically from Sai’s strangely smiling mouth. The sound settles in his ears and his throat and his chest and he knows he will not only kill for the strange ragtag team who has welcomed him, but he would die for them if he was asked to.

He’s so thrilled to have found a home beyond ANBU, beyond ROOT—even beyond Kakashi-senpai.

August 10th is just the day he was made a permanent member of the new and evolved Team 7. The day he finally found exactly where he belonged.

It’s just a picture, but it feels like he’s holding the whole world in his hands. Like a burst of springtime life has bloomed in his heart and his head and his palms.

It’s only a black and white picture—even if it feels like the culmination of everything.

Because knowing what it means is like a fire in his lungs. That he will soon receive a new name—a better one than all the ones that have come before.

August 10th is the greatest day in the calendar. The day of his birth as his own person, the day he was accepted in all his strangeness, the day you carried him into the future more times than he deserved.

I just read "The flock" today and all I can say is...I have no words to describe how much I adored it.

The world building: it was so amazing and so realistic in a fictional way. I like how you included Panem too and I seriously loved all the hierarchy, the religious stuff and their deities. I loved it all, it was much more appealing than most dystopias I have read. In a way, it felt like a mixture of different dystopias but still quite different!

The beliefs: how can you be so realistic and so damn thorough? i was actually so close to believing that you didnt make that amazing world up but that such a world existed. Seriously, all the details left me astounded!

The characters and their personalities: Each character was amazing and much more unique and realistic than the THG universe *ducks and hides* I liked how you wrote and showed their emotions or lack of emotions lol. Though honestly...I love the class difference between Everlark, its just so hot! Peeta having a high position in society while Katniss doesnt and then there was arranged marriage!! *squeals loudly* I just love it all and I love everything about it!

Your so fuckin talented your work took my breath away! all those details!! God I am salivating at the thought of the next part of the series and I hope for some smut in the future parts lol.

Ayooooo it's always nice how tumblr never informs me with no notifs👌🏻

Whatever. SO! I read through your stuff and I love your style and feeling for introspection. You probably just need to get things in order and stay on track (and I know that's the hardest point I always get side-tracked so easily.. :'D)

What I recommend with all my heart is writing down notes of all that you want to write (scenes, sentences, thoughts,...) and then try to give them a number (1 being the thing that happens first in the story line; I can send you a pic of my notes so you can see what I mean better if you want to).

When you have that order you can start detailing. You can just sit and think about it, or talk to someone and get more ideas. What I like to do most is hitting shuffle on my music and try to hc something for the story for every song. Sometimes nothing comes with it, but sometimes your brain decides to create a masterpiece!

Listening to those songs afterwards is also a great way to hype yourself up and stay motivated. (F.e. everytime I need a start for Quackity I listen to Ghosting, Hayloft, or Arms Tonite. Somehow MotherMother is Q to me🤷🏻‍♀️)

More motivation: read other fics, search for art, talk to fellow writers, annoy your friends and girlfriend with your story even though they habe no idea who you are talking about until they scream at you to shut up! :D
