a really defining moment of aang and sokka’s relationship is that sokka literally lets himself get beat up for aang’s amusement and entertainment like a day into knowing him. like he is literally letting aang drop him onto the ground from a not insignificant height over and over again just to see aang smile and laugh. he is putting his own safety and physical wellbeing at risk because it makes aang happy. and there’s a lot we could get into here about how sokka fundamentally views himself and his body as a vessel through which to provide services to others instead of a whole human being in his own right, but what matters for the purposes of this post is that it’s very immediately established that sokka will do anything to see aang enjoy himself, to the point that he will quite literally put up with physical abuse without complaint to make aang happy. so when people are like “it’s crazy how sokka is so smart and yet loses all his braincells whenever he’s around aang,” it’s like yeah, teenage boy adhd2adhd communication will do that, but also a large part of it is sokka contorting himself into an image that he thinks aang will appreciate, because he knows just how valuable preserving aang’s childhood joy and laughter is.

and what’s beautiful is that through actively becoming this person for aang’s benefit, he also actually starts to internalize the sentiment. through the process of letting himself be silly and goofy for the sake of making aang happy, he also absorbs some of that sillygoofy happiness and regains some of his own childhood joy and laughter and sense of wonder he truly thought he had lost forever. he’s not just helping aang retain his childhood, but aang is also helping sokka regain his sense of humanity. the sokka of book 3 is someone who enjoys “wacky, time wasting nonsense” and throws beach parties, a far cry from the sokka of book 1 who thought fun and joy were luxuries no one could afford. his selfless love for aang is also self-affirming, helps him to embrace aang’s point of view, to love himself slightly more than he otherwise would have. because to love aang is to necessarily let kindness into your life; it’s to learn how to be free.

I've been rewatching Osomatsu-san and have been keeping track of the times the brothers have said each other's names/nicknames because I have always wondered about it so yeah this is very self-indulgent TT_TT but I will be sharing it below.

Note!

1. Included are Seasons 1-3 and The Movie (2019), however I did not include AUs apart from F6 and Girlymatsu, and skipped over recap episodes as well as ending songs and previews

2. I did not include times when their names was said but it wasn't pertaining to them specifically so things like "Osomatsu-kun/-san" as titles or "Karamatsu Girls"

3. I did not count the times where a brother would refer to them as a whole like when Karamatsu would say "brothers" or when Totty says "niisan-tachi" (brothers)

4. The term "niisan"/ "chounan" (older brother) and "suekko" (youngets child) are counted only if they are used as a non descriptor so things like "I'm the eldest", and "Todomatsu, the youngest" do not count. However, they sometimes translate as nicknames based on context so things like "Share with your big bro" and "Come on, little bro" count, I hope this made sense lol

Having been on several fanfic sites for several years, I can hands down GUARANTEE you that anything 'classic media' has done, fanfic has done better.

#This is not hyperbole I am 100% serious #“I wish there was a book or show where *insert thing that happened in a fanfic I read at midnight*” #Anything. Anything from weird puns to comprehensive and in depth analyses of the human condition #I see people gushing about the 'groundbreaking ideas' and 'awesome concepts' they read about and I'm just like #Do you want that with a dash of gay found family hurt/comfort or a heaping of misogyny #Once I read some shmancy prim article discussing the use of themes in some famous classical text I'd read and like. #Off the top of my head I listed three fics that had done it without the unexpected and unappreciated assault scene partway through the book #At least fic authors TAG #Ao3s filter system and the increasing lack of blurbs on books has ruined me for normal reading activities #I get a book for Christmas or something and I look at it and there are no archive warnings or desc or additional tags #No word count chapter count nothing #Anyway this is about how fanfic is a superior media to the competitive publishing industry of today and if a fic makes enough readers cry #It should get automatically added to the literary canon #Makes one feel more emotion than I did with the school assigned reading and there's SIGNIFICANTLY LESS chance of untagged 18+ stuff #ao3 #Long tags #I did my final project of the concept of the literary Canon and its requirements and LET ME TELL YOU #Fanfic absolutely counts the higher ups are just cowards #'this book is a literary masterpiece it breaks down the human understanding of the future and our capabilities of distinguishing reality #From fiction and how one might develop detrimental coping mechanisms to handle it that leads to almost self destructive behaviour due to a #Self enforced blindness that renders one an outsider in their own life and by the way its all a metaphor for the oversaturation of media #Accessible at a young age leading to Youths Of Today absorbing negative traits unrelated to their environment through escapism ' #Great I can list ten self insert fanfics with that exact premise I can just read them for free #And I can guarantee no racism or Victorian era style sexism

One of the things I've noticed happening the more I make stuff is that while i am occasionally capable of following patterns and making things matching and neat, it isn't how my hands want to work. They seem to prefer to be left to their own devices to make something i will never be able to repeat and will improvise little decorative elements on their own. It's nice... no math that way.

okay weird comment etiquette question for other fic authors only, does anyone else feel weird about comments where people mention other fics by name or link to them?

like for me personally, if someone comments on my celebrity au saying "oh, i just read '[title of another celebrity au for the pairing]' and its so interesting reading such different takes!" that comment isn't insulting to either fic, but especially if i haven't read the other fic or have and found it to have problems (out of character, etc), i don't like it because it almost feels like im endorsing that fic by leaving the link attached to my own work.

i have less of an issue with someone saying "i read a fic where [x] happens and...." (rest of comment, etc) if they dont give the information to find the fic or the author. it can be weird depending on the context, but usually that's fine to me, even if someone else who read that fic might be able to identify it from the comment. Mostly i think that's because there's nothing directly being endorsed/linked for a casual viewer to then go find.

i have no problem with people making rec lists that im on along with others, of course, but having it specifically on my fics/my page feels weird (the context of rec lists is also very different from the context of a comment section). i was wondering how other authors felt about it, though i dont know how common this scenario is. i almost always delete these comments just because they make me uncomfortable and thats reason enough to curate your online experience, but i was curious
