An illustration I made a while ago with PhyloPic silhouettes as part of my chapter on human evolution (“Three Histories of the Human Body”) in the anti-creationism volume God’s Word or Human Reason?.

Other diagrams I’ve made on evolution.
A paleofiction comic book series about much earlier human ancestors.
I think that the reason that humans are so obsessed with the idea of humanoids, from ancient folklore to brand new fantasy books, is because we're lonely. We weren't always the only humans. They've got to be there somewhere, right? But they're not. And so we make magical tales.
I don’t think we give enough thought about just how brief our place as apex predators has been compared to millions of years our ancestors spent as humble foragers and regular prey.
A new study has found a terrible bottleneck in human ancestors about 900k years ago. There were as few as 1000 individuals left … if this is verified further there was a time when we almost didn't make it.
I know its hard to get evidence of this stuff but I personally really don't think that the Uncanny Valley effect is caused by neanderthals. Archaic Homo sapiens lived too closely with them. Had babies with them. All modern humans are mostly homo sapiens and a little bit neanderthal.
There was also other species of humans that overlap with us. There's huge amounts of within species variation within each of them, so the idea other human species looking different would cause the UV effect seems unlikely to me

Western Lowland Gorilla Silverback Male. Today is World Gorilla Day. Incredible creatures that I highly doubt I will ever be lucky enough to see in the wild. They are very intimidating up close, awesome animals, especially the Silverbacks. They just look powerful.
SCP mythos: Timeline of Hominid Civilizations on Earth
I made, or I guess am continuing to make, an attempt to chart out the history of hominid (human and human-adjacent) civilizations from the SCP mythos. Obviously it's a bit janky due to there being no single canon, but it's fun to try.
In lieu of diagrams to copy, I drew the reconstructions of my ancestors ❤️
Tag yourself lmao
Edit: I did it because the outdated shitty documentary the teacher showed us made them look so unintelligent and nonhuman. I sincerely doubt neanderthals were covered in dirt with matted hair and wore badly made rags. They literally fucked with homo sapiens and made viable offspring, they were hot shit!
I don't know if he saw a news headline that was intentionally misleading or his media literacy sucks to the moon and back, but my dad was gushing about those "oldest human fossils found in Europe" being older than Ardipithecus. I remember hearing something similar and going "huh, that's weird", but never actually went looking at the info because I assumed it was another Piltdown Man scenario.
Turns out those remains are about 1.4 million years old; they are not the oldest human fossils, they are just the oldest remains found in Europe. The oldest known hominid fossil known is "Ardi", a species similiar to Australopithecus with the exception of having prehensile feet. This fossil was found in strata dating around 4.4 million years ago, much older than the face bones found in Spain.
Another possibility for his misunderstanding is a) he doesn't know the timeline of when these hominid ancestor-cousins lived, and b) he considers every species from Ardipithecus to us as human, which is admittedly something I think for Homo erectus and onward. He's gonna give me the ugliest fucking look when it comes up again and I correct him. 💀
