Alien: So do your people have a name?
Human: Yes, but it's very long and complicated. I don't think you could pronounce it.
Alien: Heh, try me.
Human: Alright -- animaliachordatamammaliaprimateshaplorhinisimiiformeshominidaehomininaehomininihomosapiens.
Alien: Oh.
Human: Or homos for short.
Alien: Homos -- got it. Homos...

If you think there are at least some non-animal organisms, like archaea or fungi or all opisthokonts plants, that meet the stated criteria, select the first option ("Animals or other.") We're discussing terrestrial, biological life only, though, so extraterrestrial life, supernatural beings, or machine intelligences do not figure in to this scheme (but feel free to discuss them in the notes).
Eumetazoa is, AFAICT, the largest group of animals that includes all animals with at least some nervous tissue--so not sea sponges. But it does include a few clades without nervous systems, like the Placozoa.
Chordates are all animals containing a dorsal nerve cord specifically: chordates do not include, e.g., insects, molluscs (including octopuses and squid), and starfish. Chordates do include all fish.
Tetrapods include all animals with four limbs and distinct digits; this excludes most, but not all fish, and includes reptiles, mammals, dinosaurs (including birds), and amphibians.
Mammals includes all animals that nurse their young, have fur, have a neocortex, and have three middle ear bones. This group includes monotremes like the platypus, as well as more familiar animals like dogs, cats, cows, horses, mooses, and more(ses).
Primates includes monkeys, lemurs, apes, tarsiers, lorises and, of course, humans (though all of these clades include humans).
Hominids include gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and humans ("apes").
Hominins includes just humans and chimpanzees (including bonobos). (I think; the taxonomic nomenclature distinguishes between Hominidae, Hominini, Homininae, Hominina, and Hominoidae, so I might have mixed some of these up. Blame the ICZN or whoever is responsible for this mess.)
Australopithecines (equivalent to "Hominina," I think, but don't quote me on that) includes all extinct hominins more closely related to humans than to any other extant species, like Australopithecus africanus, Paranthropus robustus, and of course later species like Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.
Homo is the genus that includes the whole human family in the broad sense: modern humans, Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo erectus, and Homo habilis.
Homo sapiens includes only anatomically modern humans, as we emerged around 300,000 years ago in Africa.

HEADCANON TIME: POOB AND PEST EDITION!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had random ideas last night and I should pile them up here
Some of these are subject to change, either by adding new ones, rewording ones as I get better ideas, or removing some entirely.
Poob:
The reason they have their birthday "everyday" is because they rarely have a birthday party on their true birthdate, therefore decided to start having it frequently before it became a daily routine. They were born on February 29th, 2000.
Their species, the Noob, are considered primates, but in a separate tribe from humans (either as a separate tribe in Homininae subfamily, or as a separate genus in the Hominini tribe). (Please don't make me go in depth with taxonomic ranks I'll talk about it for hours)
Implied by their true birthday, they are 24 years old (or 6 if you're gonna be a real funny guy).
Born AMAB, transitioned as enby in their mid-teens.
Demiromantic asexual, too busy partying to engage in a relationship anyways.
Their wardrobe consists of mostly multiples of the same outfit, outside of event outfits.
Type of person that would do the one chip challenge (and immediately regrets it).
Not particularly close with Infected, but still considered friends.
Pest:
Pest is 25.
Outside of taking traits from stag beetles, he also has a pair of elytra and wings (though he almost never uses the wings as they're primarily just for show).
Evolved from a species of beetle that eventually mimicked many features of a guest. (A species of mimic beetle, as I dubbed it.)
Somewhat overweight.
Demiboy and gay (though good luck trying to even interact with him without him being an asshole to you lol).
Pest has a really bad spending habit.
His room is a MESS, but doesn't mind the insects that infests the place (bug to bug interactions lets go!)
I've seen someone else headcanon it, but I'm starting to like the idea he was adopted by Poob's family. Adding onto it tho, he was most likely adopted because Poob almost never seen a guest before (even though Pest is not a true guest). After the guest extinction in 2017, he became the only remnant of guests ever existing and Poob believes all guests look nearly identical to him.
If he knew exactly what happened to Spud!, he would feel bad, he would just not confess it because he would rather not show emotion.
Pest did not look that much different as a child, the only difference is he outgrew his hair...and obviously just being bigger.

Just realizing now that Winona must be so confused about the questions people are asking. Like imagine someone asking if we were Hominini instead of Homo Sapiens?? They’re just trying to enjoy a trip to the pier and we’re grilling into their knowledge of OC evolution 💀

The meaning of “Person”
When we think of the word “Person” we often think of an “Individual “. But there’s another word that immediately follows that we never think or say aloud. That word is “Human”. A Person is an Individual Human. To think of a Person as anything else is absurd to humans, who assign human traights to the most inhuman of things. You would never think of a toaster as a “Person” for example, no matter how advanced the A.I. gets.
So to be a “Person” is to be “Human” plain and simple. But what exactly it is that defines being human is a philosophical debate we’ve been having since we’ve had philosophers to ask the question. Of course, we know what a “Human” is scientifically. Speaking from a point of solid reality and things we can prove with science, A “Human” is a living thing classified in the kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, class Mammalia, order Primates, suborder Haplorhini, infraorder Simiiformes, family Hominidae, subfamily Homininae, tribe hominini, genus Homo Linnaeus and species Homo Sapien. A Human is also made up of atoms and cells, and has a body that is at least 70% water. A human has a brain and a heart, a spine, a stomach, a mouth and a tongue. All this we can prove, over and over.
But what is a Person? What is a Soul? What does it mean, truly, to be Human? Does a Human in a vegetative state still count as a Person? Or do they, still able to think but trapped in their own mind, think of themselves as the only Person? Is a Person someone who is comfortable with themselves? Is a Person someone who is capable of loving others and receiving love in turn? Or is a Person only a concept that one’s “Self” has of other Humans?
But in the end, the questions don’t really matter. What matters to me is that I do not always feel like a “Person”. I don’t always feel like the word “Human” describes me, and sometimes I feel like my very scientificly provable human body is alien and uncomfortable to me. Sometimes the concept of being a “Person” means eating food to keep myself alive and that very aspect of Person-hood physically disgusts me. Sometimes I feel that being able to keep one’s self and dwelling clean is a better measure, and the fact that depression hits me hard enough to disable my basic human need for cleanliness makes me feel inhuman. But above all else, a lot of times I feel that the lies I tell myself are true. That no matter how hard I “pretend” to be nice, how long I put up a “front” of genuine connection with other “Persons”, I will never be “Human”. I will never be a “Person”. And the worst part is, I can’t turn it off. It happens alot, so when it does, I put on my mask and pretend it’s fine. Pretend to believe I’m “Human”, but it’s a lie, and I can’t really just decide to be a Person today.

SCP-1000: Bigfoot
SCP-1000 is a nocturnal, omnivorous ape, classified in the Hominini branch along with genera Pan and Homo. Adults range in size from 1.5 to 3 m (5 to 10 ft) in height, and weigh between 90 and 270 kg (200 - 600 lbs). They have grey, brown, black, red, and occasionally white fur. They possess large eyes with good vision, a pronounced brow ridge, and a sagittal crest on the forehead similar to that of the gorilla, but present in both sexes. Their intelligence is on par with that of Pan troglodytes (the common chimpanzee).
SCP-2521: ●●|●●●●●|●●|●
SCP-2521 is a being that cannot be contained. When information is written about it, it appears and takes the written information. When it is spoken of, it appears and kidnaps the speaker. The article is 'written' in pictograms to express this.

Greek myths: The Five Ages
Hindu scriptures have the Four Yugas, Christian texts the Six Dispensations. But to the ancient Greeks five Ages were how they divided human history, with each Age serving a literal and symbolic purpose.
Tumblr media
Hesiod in his Works and Days (c. 700 BCE) lays out each era with its notable features, including the nature of human beings during this time:
The Golden Age (Χρύσεον Γένος): the age during which Cronus ruled Olympus and the universe with the Titans. Humans in this time were no different from the gods, apart from their mortality which was peaceful and painless. When these long-lived "golden" humans died, they would return as Pure Daemons (Δαίμονες Ἁγνοὶ), dwelling in the sky as benevolent spirits and blessing the agriculture of the living.
The Silver Age (Αργυρόν Γένος): the age during which Zeus assumed power. A child in this age would live a hundred years before becoming an adult, and adults lived for a short time. They were less intelligent, less altruistic, and were spiteful of the gods, leading to the Sky Father gradually wiping them out. Upon death they would become Blessed Mortals on the Earth (Ὑποχθόνιοι Μάκαρες Θνητοῖς), dwelling on the ground while the Daemons lived in the skies.
The Bronze Age (Χάλκειον Γένος): a violent and war-centred humanity who loved the ways of Ares more than any other god. They were the first to begin using bronze weapons and equipment, and destroyed themselves without divine intervention, leaving no name behind them and not returning as divine beings upon death, remaining trapped in the Cold House of Freezing Hades (Εὐρώεντα Δόμον Κρυεροῦ Αίδαο).
The Age of Heroes (Ἀνδρῶν Ἡρώων Θεῖον Γένος): the Heroic Age was an improvement from the prior era. This was the age of Hemitheoi (Ἡμίθεοι, "Demigods"), the Deific Heroes such as Heracles and Achilles. Upon death they would go to Elysium (Ἠλύσιον), an afterlife for the righteous ruled by Cronus.
The Iron Age (Σιδήρεον Γένος): our current era. People live for incredibly short times, are more susceptible to greed, and all mortal divine beings are long dead.
The symbolic meanings of these ages could be applied to our biology: humanity beginning as innocent apes (Golden Age: Hominoidea), becoming more advanced and developing language (Silver Age: Hominidae), evolving more advanced brains and developing tools (Bronze Age: Homininae), developing cultures and civilizations (Heroic Age: Hominini), and progressing into modern humans (Iron Age: Hominina).

SOLUTION AT Academic Writers Bay PART 1 Now that we have explored many species in the Tribe Hominini, what does the term “human” mean to you? Were members of the genus Paranthropus or Australopithecus human? What about Homo erectus and the Neandertals? At what point along the hominin evolutionary path did humanity emerge? Be sure to back up your answer with specific data and cite your sources. PART 2 Of the problems facing modern people, which do you think are most significant and why? What, if any, other major problems that were not discussed do you feel are significant?
