Before The Wayne Came A Kane

Martha Wayne née Kane came from a very prestigious family even before she married her husband, the illustrious M.D. Thomas Wayne. Sadly, her family never supported her union with Thomas, so she largely cut them out of her life once she married and that certainly had not changed when she had a son.

Her strained relationship with the rest of her family is particularly apparent when it's revealed, at the release of her and Thomas' respective wills after their unexpected, tragic deaths, that she would not give her brothers or sisters-in-law custody of Bruce. They may be the last of his living relatives, but even in death she would never allow them to touch her baby boy. Hence, his care is left to the head butler, one Alfred Pennyworth.

She did have two sister, though. Two baby sisters, one who had been disowned and disavowed from the family long before her, named Alicia. And one who was far too young to take in her son, even if Martha had allowed it. Her name is Madeline Kane. As the only other acknowledged daughter left from Roderick and Elizabeth Kane, she is left to carry the burden of her older sister's legacy. And what a burden it was, to be constantly compared to a dead woman her family seemed to adore and loathe in strides.

It's really no wonder that the moment she gets the chance, she leaves her family in Gotham to attend a university in Wisconsin. There, she meets Jack Fenton. He can be a little clumsy sometimes, but he has an eye for engineering and doesn't like her for her family's name or wealth. He calls her "Maddie" when she says so, and he doesn't ask about the change.

She falls in love and the two are wedded in the blink of an eye, Maddie pregnant with their first child only a few years after graduation. In her family's eyes, it just further proves that any Kane daughter is cursed and doomed to failure. (Beth understands this. Bette learns this. Kate knows this.)

And all too similarly to her elder sister, when her son is just fourteen years old, she is killed: yet another unexpected, tragic death. Her husband and her daughter perish along with her. Just like her older sister, the only one left is her baby boy.

Only, Maddie wasn't nearly as forthcoming with her will, and there is no guardian marked for custody in his papers. The Kanes, who proclaim they are his rightful family, are more than happy to take advantage of this.

Bruce isn't close to his family, beyond perhaps Kate. But if there is one thing that he knows it's that his parents didn't give his estranged relatives custody of him for a reason. Alfred is stingy with the details, but he can confirm that much.

Bruce is left to fight an uphill battle, helping a mourning boy heal from his loss and fighting his extended family's attempts for custody at every turn.

This is Jacob Kane, Kate's father, Martha's brother, and Bruce's uncle. He's got the distinct red hair and do you know who else has red hair? Maddie. Jacob is a respected military officer and Maddie, in general, has always given me strong former U.S. agent vibes. But regardless, it makes sense that Maddie would know things or learned how to fight at an early age if her older brother left for military service.

Also, I just love showing Bruce's extended family and how twisted, complicated his family was long before he adopted so many children. And this also helps explain why Maddie is so cagey with her background. She only has Alicia left really, all the rest she keeps out and away for good reason.

But she can't protect Danny from them forever.

Plus, there's this really cool possibility for Danny to stay with the Kanes for a while and explore that avenue before he's ultimately brought into the Wayne fold. Danny gets to see what the upper crust Gotham elites look like with his own two eyes, beyond Sam's stories.

WIBTA for writing Sonic Fanfiction about my dead aunt?

Right, I know, it sounds bad right out of the gate. My Aunt died when an affair went wrong, he wanted to elope with her, and in a cocaine fueled rage, he shot her and then himself. She had five children. This all happened 15 years before I was born. It has directly impacted my life, however - my mother has always talked about her, my older sister was named after her.

I had no idea how she died, or that I had five cousins, until last year when I took it upon myself to look up old newspaper reports. See, she's burried under a tree by the cemetary, because her death was deemed too tainted by the devil for her to have a Christian burial in the church, so it's easy to find her grave.

It's a lot for me to think about. I normally work through, explore, and unpack issues in my life by writing out extensive stories which explore the themes and ideas - see, in the old American comic series, Knuckles dealt with a lot of generational trauma, finding out about random family members, and having things obscured by his parents because the conversations are "too difficult to have". It really helps me to write these things down through the lense of my favourite characters, I have for as long as I could write. The character Julie-Su, too, has a lot of secret family members, her life is thrown into turmoil to realise that the people she knows are actually family, such as Remington, who was the son of her dead brother. It's infinitely relatable.

I worry, however, is that disrespectful on my dead aunt? To compare her to one of Knuckles the Echidna's family members? Would it hurt my mother, if she ever found out?

I cannot talk to her about this, both as she doesn't want to talk about it, and I am estranged from my family as of my abusive father. The only time I have learnt anything about my aunt, is from my father drunkenly accidentally letting things slip, or from my older siblings.

So... I'm torn ... WIBTA for writing Sonic fanfiction about a real life tragedy that directly affects me? Not a fandom post, even though it feels like it ought to be one.

Steve was never very close to his brother. With ten years between them and too little hobbies shared, their relationship seemed more forced than voluntary. Even still though, they were family. Steve knew that if he needed him, Phil would be there to help (as seen in the many times he looked the other way with Steve’s speeding and horrible driving). 

That’s why it hurt so horrendously when he found out that Phil had died in the earthquakes. 

Steve felt numb. Frozen. Dead inside and the most alone he’d ever been. His only family, besides his parents that had moved away without ever looking back, was dead. Never again would Phil pull him over for speeding and let him go with exasperated threats. Never would they silently eat burgers across from each other in a small diner booth while sipping on butterscotch milkshakes they both denied were their favorite. And never again would they talk about boys or girls with stuttered pronouns and nervous glances searching for the other’s acceptance. 

What hurt even worse though was the loss of what they could’ve been. Phil had seen him as a bratty kid, King Steve, and the traumatized version of himself that he was after the Upside Down. But he would never see him as an adult, as someone he could be proud of. They wouldn’t get a chance to grow closer or become proper brothers in a status they never quite reached. 

Perhaps worst of all was what Phil could’ve been thinking when his patrol car fell into the fiery cracks in the earth. Did he know that Steve loved him? That he looked up to him as a role model? That he loved having him as a brother? Steve didn’t tell him any of that enough, never showed his appreciation, and he sure regretted that now. And now Steve wouldn’t get the chance to tell him. Nor would he have a chance to apologize for all the harsh words he spewed at Phil during their last fight. He wouldn’t get to tell him that he didn’t mean anything he’d shouted at him. Steve would never get to make it up to him or earn his forgiveness. 

No, now Steve had to live with the fear that his older brother died alone, in pain, and thinking he hated him. 

He spent the next week recovering from the bat bites on his sides, avoiding probing questions from the Party, and visiting the comatose Max in the hospital. He knew better than anyone how she felt now. If Vecna was still around, he would target Steve and feast on the pain suffocating him. An all-consuming pain only someone who’d lost a sibling could feel. More than ever, Steve wished that Max was awake, unhurt, and present. She would understand Steve’s feelings of turmoil of losing Phil much like she did with losing Billy. Even as he begged her from her bedside though to awaken, she stayed frozen with her eyes closed tight. 

She would die just days later. 

Steve had to plan two funerals just two days apart. One for his estranged brother and one for the girl he saw as his sister. He didn’t cry at either. His eyes were far too dry from crying so much in the privacy of his crypt of a home to spare any tears in the light of day. 

He would grieve his family, his blood brother and the sister he’d adopted. He would watch the youthfulness and innocence of the kids melt away in their grief. Eventually though, Steve would move forward although the scars, just like the divots in this sides and the silvery line encircling his throat, would remain as a reminder of the pain he had to suffer all too young.

Thinking about one of my older WC aus again… I’ve finally got a name for it: the Kinless Leaders au

In which I realized that it makes way more sense for the leaders in Warriors to be put under the “cannot have mates or kits” rule rather than healers…

Leaders are far more ingrained in politics and diplomacy than healers are. They’re the only non-healer, as well, who are known to have steady contact with StarClan, and have recieved a grand gift (nine lives) from their ancestors. Literally touched by the stars. They’d need to be “pure”, and completely unhindered by emotional or physical attachments (that being: immediate family, romantic attachments, and kits) that could cloud their judgement when it comes to the good of the whole Clan.

They’re allowed friends — to a degree. Deputies, and successors, would be chosen only if they have no immediate family to speak of, and can prove throughout their assisting reign to have the fortitude to not become a mate or parent. If a leader does have kits, they are to be immediately deposed, for they have lost their Clan’s trust, their connection to StarClan + their ancestor’s trust, and broken their vows. They are more likely now to jump to defend their kin in the face of political unrest, as well.

It would just make more sense, thematically, if this were the case… And provide way more drama. Like, so much more.

Thistleclaw could still have courted Snowfur and sired Whitestorm, but would have broken her heart and requested she invoke Queen’s Rights and not name a father — which could have led to Bluefur’s distaste for him, because of course her sister would have confided in her.

Bluefur could have been pregnant at the time Goosefeather told her of the prophecy, and warned her of Thistleclaw’s bloodthirsty intentions. By that time, Snowfur would have been dead, and we could just kill off Stormtail a bit earlier. Hence why she had to give up her kits, albeit far earlier, to secure her place as leader.

Tigerclaw wouldn’t have sired Goldenflower or Sasha’s kits. But kittens raised without an obvious father, especially when Sasha was a kittypet and Goldenflower’s first mate for her first litter was rumored to be a loner, would be far more easy to manipulate and guide under one’s wing. He could have offered Tawnypelt a place in ShadowClan under him for the same reasons as canon, and could have coaxed both Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost into the Dark Forest after his death regardless.

Crookedstar’s life now becomes ever-sadder, as he fell in love with Willowbreeze, who reciprocated, but could only be with her in secret. Then she and most of their kits die, leading him to believe it is a sign, and offer his only surviving kit to his estranged brother to take into his own mysteriously-born litter.

No more “Half of ThunderClan being direct Firestar descendants”, because Firestar now cannot have kits. Perhaps Squirrelflight and Leafpool were still his, however… Perhaps ThunderClan’s bright brand of fire isn’t as perfect as many believe.

Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight were mates and raised a family, however the argument of “they’re not really yours, so is it alright to step into leadership?” could be made in a society that values their leader’s purity…

The Crow Road and Good Omens

When I watched season two of Good Omens for the first time, I noticed that Crowley throws Muriel a book at random near the end of the finale, but I didn't pay a ton of attention to it, because there was a lot going on. Then I started a second watch where I took notes on things that struck me, references or lines that couldn't just be random but had to merit a closer look. One of these things was the fact that Metatron asks Muriel about their book and they hold it up extremely conspicuously (twice) so that the title, The Crow Road, is very obvious. It seemed impossible to me that it was just a random book, so I ordered a copy from the library and settled in with it.

(The only copy in the system is held in the library my mother runs in another town. Coincidence? OR FATE?)

The Crow Road

The Crow Road is a hard book to sum up. There is a relatively straightforward "present day" plotline from a single character's perspective, but much of the book (particularly in the first half) consists of flashbacks.

I'm going to sum up the family relationships first, for simplicity's sake. Margot and Matthew McHoan are the parents of Hamish (married to Antonia), Kenneth (m. Mary), Fiona (m. Fergus Urvill), Ilsa, and Rory (who has been missing for years). Kenneth and Mary are the parents of Lewis, Prentice, and James. Fiona and Fergus are the parents of Diana and Helen), and Fiona is dead by the start of the book. Fergus's sister, Charlotte, married Steve and had a daughter, Verity. Rory dated Janice, who had a daughter, Marion. There is also an unrelated family, the Watts: Lachlan is in Kenneth's generation; his brother's kids, Ashley, Darren, and Dean, are in Prentice's.

Prentice is the main character, though the other bolded names are important. He's a middle child, jealous of his older brother (a successful comedian) and dismissive of his younger one (who barely turns up on the page anyway); he's in love with the gorgeous and unattainable Verity; he has simultaneous superiority and inferiority complexes that make him moody and self-righteous, sure that he's smarter than everyone else but at the same time terribly insecure. Relatedly, he's estranged from his father because he believes there's an afterlife and his father is a committed atheist.

The main plotline begins at Margot's funeral and cremation in 1989. Prentice leaves the post-funeral gathering (after Margot's body has exploded in the oven as they forgot to remove her pacemaker) for the pub, where he catches up with the Watts - he's at university and not around town. Ashley gives him a piece of the Berlin Wall and tells him that when she was there, she came across some man saying that the McHoan family was being tricked.

He starts to investigate the disappearance of his Uncle Rory, finding Janice and getting some of his papers from her. Weeks(?) later, he catches Verity and Lewis canoodling at the Hogmanay party at Urvill Castle; the next day at another party, he gets blackout drunk and embarrasses everyone by screaming at them. The next morning, told off by his mother and having a terrible, horrible, no-good day, he leaves his bag on the train - including all of those papers, only half of which he'd looked through.

After a dinner with Ashley in the city where she also tells him off for his poor choices (he's also failing at his classes and has gotten caught shoplifting), he gets a call to come home because his father has died: he was struck by lightning while climbing a church. Prentice starts to wonder more seriously about Rory's fate, now, and looks harder for clues. After they bury Kenneth and Lewis and Verity get married, he finds some old floppy disks in his parents' home marked as Rory's. Ashley realizes that the man from Berlin is actually a news correspondent who reports for the BBC around the world, and takes the discs to get investigated by her techie friends.

While he waits, Prentice finds some old diaries of Rory's as well, borderline incomprehensible because they're full of abbreviations. He goes with Ashley to a bar to find that news correspondent, who turns tail as soon as he sees him and mysteriously flees. Finally he gets the info from the discs: it's a narrative about Fergus catching Fiona in bed with Lachlan Watts, telling Rory about it, and then deliberately driving aggressively to cause the car accident where she died. This helps Prentice put together a strong theory that Rory went to Fergus to say he knew what had happened and Fergus killed him, then got the journalist to send then matchbooks from all over the world to make it seem like Rory is still alive. He goes to see Fergus about this, not being completely direct but still ... and that night the house is broken into and he's attacked, the intruder getting away with nothing.

Later, Fergus crashes his Cessna into the Atlantic after presumably having a heart attack in it. Not very far from the crash site, the police soon after come across a motorcycle with a body tied to it that is determined to be Rory, killed with blows to the head. The Bentley Eight Fergus left to Prentice in his will (originally it was to go to Kenneth) has a paperweight in the glove box that exactly matches the description of the murder weapon. Around this time, he completely loses any faith he had in religion.

Now that loose ends are tied up and Prentice is making better life choices, he and Ashley get together, fuck, and admit that they love each other - but she is still leaving for a job in Canada, and she says she'll come back once he's done with university (he's repeating a year) if he still loves her. He also goes back to Urvill Castle, where his cousin reminds him of a time they were all drunk/high up in the observatory and he was going on and on about the wonders of the stars and how they were better than religion, which spurred her to become an astronomer. The younger members of the family go back up there in order to do a determinedly unreligious "christening" ceremony for Lewis and Verity's baby, Kenneth.

Along the way in all this, there are flashbacks to Kenneth's childhood, youth, and young parenthood; to Rory's POV; to Prentice as a teenager - all of these help to build their characterization, and also that of other characters, as well as to drop clues about what Fergus did and what Rory was doing.

What is the Crow Road?

The "crow road" refers to three separate things in the book.

"Away the crow road" is a euphemism of Grandma Margot's to mean "died".

It's a literal road in their town, where Janice lives.

It's the title of the work Rory was building around the whole Fergus-Lachlan-Fiona story before, I assume, he realized that Fergus killed Fiona.

Death and Religion

Death is ... pretty central to the book. It starts with Margot's death, we're made aware of Fiona's at the funeral, we find out that Prentice and Kenneth's estrangement stems from Ashley's brother Darren's death in a motorcycle accident, Kenneth dies, Fergus dies. Prentice also gets to live in the home of an old rich woman who died while her will's being sorted out (a la Jarndyce v. Jarndyce) after his father's death, when he's turning his life around.

That estrangement is generally over religion, but more specifically Prentice's belief in a soul and afterlife. He has to believe that there is something of Darren that will go on, and Kenneth thinks this is utter stupidity. Kenneth has a lot of lines regarding religion/Christianity that, if tweaked to accept the existence of God but rejection of the religion and philosophy around said god, sound quite Crowleyish - religion is used to justify evil, the concept of original sin is inherently unfair, etc. And by the end of the book, when he tosses the paperweight that killed his uncle into the sea, Prentice has come to agree completely with his father.

Hamish, Kenneth and Rory's older brother, has his own spin on Christianity that's charmingly batshit and heretical. He thinks bad people have exactly the things done to them in the afterlife that they did to hurt others, and that there are versions of everyone alive there for the dead to interact with. After Kenneth's death he's completely shaken and briefly goes back to ordinary Christian beliefs before spinning off again. He comes across as deluded the whole time. He also has a line about God being a "strict father" which prompts Prentice to consider God as a child-abuser.

Toward the end, there's a flashback with Rory, who says he briefly had the belief that by humming a particular low note he could affect tv screens, but then he realized that it was vibrating his own head and only affecting his perception of them. The point of the flashback was for him to suggest that Fergus may not have even seen Fiona cheating (he was drunk), just imagined it, but it's not hard to see a critique of religion in this as well.

Love and Sex

Ohhh, is there a lot of these in the book. It's quite horny! Prentice hooks up with Marion as a teenager in an old car in the garage, which they basically destroy by accident; he also fucks her mother, Janice (who then takes up with his roommate so he has to be aware of them fucking all the time); he's constantly burning with lust for Verity - but Ashley is the only one he seems to actually love. Lewis and Verity have sex at the Hogmanay party. Kenneth and Mary have sex in a boat before they get engaged. Rory sees Fergus trying to get Fiona into bed at a wedding before they get together, and of course there's Fiona and Lachlan. Not to speak of the talking/thinking about masturbation present in many of the adolescent flashbacks.

There's also a lot of familial love. Kenneth loves the children (all the children, really, not just his own; he writes stories and creates games for them), Mary loves them, Margot loves the family, Rory and Prentice love each other. The Watt siblings love each other, coming together to destroy the concrete litter bin that killed Darren. Lewis and Verity love each other, and by the end, Lewis and Prentice are loving siblings again as well (nobody cares about James), and they both love baby Kenneth.

War

It doesn't really come up in my summary, but war is a strong part of the setting. The "present" of the book runs through the Gulf War, which is of great importance to the characters - they worry about a draft, they criticize both Saddam Hussein and the US's capitalist motives, at one point they consider it possibly the beginning of World War III. Kenneth's childhood is also during World War II: in one flashback, Lachlan explains to Kenneth and Fergus that his father uses their bread to strain green dye out of petrol to sell on the black market (technically postwar, but still during rationing).

So, How Does This Relate To Good Omens?

Well, all of these things are very much present in the show!

The main characters and the backdrop of Armageddon are of course drawn from the Bible, and it's hardly an uncritical use of a religious source - Heaven is no better than Hell, God is absent, and Crowley and Aziraphale are right for standing together to create their own side; as noted previously, it feels very in line with Kenneth's thoughts on religion as an institution. Death and war certainly come into it, though mostly as something to be averted in season one and presumably in season three again, and love is ... well, love is the point. They love each other, they love Earth - they love the universe, Crowley created all those marvelous stars. The ending of the book specifically lines up with the ending of season two, in that the main characters who love each other are temporarily separated. And of course, the story structure that's chock-a-block with flashbacks is highly reminiscent of season two, with its historical minisodes cut in with the present-day scenes to highlight important character background and parallels.

I don't think anything from the plot of this book is meant to be a clue as to plot developments in season three, although I don't think it's entirely impossible for the way the mystery of Rory and Fiona's deaths is solved through finding an answer in Rory's writing to be a reference to Aziraphale's diaries. But there is so much going on in the book that it's hard to pick out what it could be - working through Rory's papers/files is actually quite a minor part.

If it is supposed to presage something (rather than to be an easter egg so people who know the book can go, "oh, that book really works with this show!"), I think it's more likely to hint that Muriel is going to learn to think for themself and reject Heaven's orthodoxy, or else to more generally refer to Aziraphale realizing that he can't fix it.

What if Joker got a Palace in the Third Semester AU: the unhinged explanation.

Goro had looked up Kurusu last night, using old police files he wasn’t technically sure he had access to any more, but he was past giving a shit. The arrest record and documents listing charges against him he’d taken from the chief interrogator— they were still there, but curiously blank, in a way only cognitive distortion could manage. His hometown existed, but an illegal search of Shido’s census database didn’t reveal anybody living in the Kurusu household; not Akira Kurusu, not his parents or literally anyone else. The whole thing was a baffling mystery that had exhausted him to the point of passing out. The violence of clearing Shadows gives his aching mind a bit of clarity, though, and with it, a chilling thought. Akira Kurusu has been erased from reality.

Set from Goro's perspective. Instead of waking up on January 1st to a changed reality, on that day, Akira suddenly disappears. He is not gone from the Phantom Thieves' cognitions, but he is physically missing, and stranger still are his blank arrest records and the existence of the Kurusu household in a government census that Goro has completely transparently and legally obtained, despite the fact that "Akira Kurusu" does not exist.

“If he’s been erased from reality, does that mean Maruki overwrote his… his existence itself?" The low, simmering anger in her voice and the way she drops the honorific for Maruki speaks volumes about how Kurusu’s absence has radicalised Yoshizawa against Maruki’s tempting demands. It doesn’t quite satisfy him, because Kurusu is still missing and Yoshizawa is far too innocent for her own good; but it is enough to give him confidence in her teamwork, at least. “I have my doubts about that,” Goro says. He weighs his words carefully, trying to construct the evidence in a way that makes sense. “If he were truly overwritten from this reality, the Phantom Thieves wouldn’t remember their friend; they do, albeit in a very limited way.”

Yoshizawa hums thoughtfully. “Maruki managed to overwrite the cognitions of all the Phantom Thieves into believing their dead or estranged relationships had returned. He has no trouble writing people into reality; it should follow that he can write someone out of reality, but it seems while an effort was made, it wasn’t complete enough.” “Indeed.” Goro hides the modicum of surprise he feels at Yoshizawa’s brains; she’s no detective, but she’s decided smarter than Goro had given her credit for. “To support your conclusion: the papers on which his arrest record was printed still exist, even if the pages are blank. The census database indicates that the Kurusu household is empty, but also that it exists.” It would be a fascinating conundrum if he wasn’t under imminent threat of this cognitive reality. Either Kurusu has been imprecisely written out of this reality, or… “What if he’s currently residing in another plane of existence?”

In this AU, I basically postpone Kasumi/Sumire's internal crisis until after they have figured out what the fuck happened to Akira. "Kasumi" and Akechi enter the Odaiba Palace as usual despite the lack of Joker, find out it's Maruki, but he doesn't show "Kasumi" the traumatising videos of her past life for reasons untold.

“As you said, it is unlike Maruki to imprecisely remove him from reality. If he were so intent on giving his friends their paradise, he would either allow Kurusu to exist to be their friend, or overwrite his existence completely so the Phantom Thieves fully immerse themselves in the fantasy of their desired lives, which all supposedly took place before they met Kurusu.” Madarame’s pupil, the Nijima sisters and their father, Wakaba Isshiki, Kunikazu Okumura… the only exception is a human Morgana, but Morgana has always been an exception. “Instead Kurusu exists as a memory and artifacts of his existence weren’t properly erased. Perhaps, due to his… unique powers, he was able to separate himself from this version of reality before Maruki got to him.” It’s a stretch, but at the same time, the incongruity of the entire fucking Metaverse continues to burn a hole through his brain, so really, nothing is going to stop him at this point. “Crow-senpai…” Yoshizawa is hesitant, as if she is also grasping how tenuous the connection is. But then her face hardens in an expression he’d thought her incapable of: sheer, raw determination. “The Metaverse is an alternate plane of existence.”

Goro and "Kasumi" figure out that Palaces apart from Maruki's simply cannot exist, because technically, reality itself is Maruki's Palace; he is spreading his cognitive belief (distortion) to the entire world via god powers. With such overwhelming cognitive control, no "real" place exists for cognitive distortion to occur, because "reality" is already just "cognition" by Maruki.

They try Mementos, sure. Mementos is the collective unconscious, and while Persona-users can't have Shadows, if one is being perceived by the collective unconscious, one is also technically part of it: AKA, if the Shadows in Mementos registered Joker as like, a person, proof of his existence still exists in the cognitive world. (Of course said cognitive world is currently fusing with reality but I digress.) They try inputting Joker's name into the Mementos Nav to see if it will register him in the public unconscious, but unfortunately, no dice.

But Joker is special. He is the Wild Card, and unbeknownst to Goro or "Kasumi", he has access to the Velvet Room, a place 'between mind and matter, dream and reality'. Not saying that it's simple enough for him to just escape to the Velvet Room, but he's always been special, and has powers that none of them understand. So strange things always happen to him, and well:

“He can’t be totally gone,” Goro tries to reason, more for himself than Yoshizawa. If he has to try and convince the Phantom Thieves to face reality and defeat Maruki by himself, he is going to scream. “Evidence of his existence is improperly erased, meaning his cognition has not fully disappeared, even if Mementos doesn’t perceive him. If so—” Yoshizawa suddenly goes very, very still. “There is one other possibility,” she murmurs almost disbelievingly. It strikes Goro the way lightning skewers a tree. It would make sense, though. Maruki physically resides in his Palace because his distortion extends to the entire world; ergo, the entire world is technically his Palace. If Kurusu were physically residing anywhere else, it would be a cognitive reality under his control, not one where he'd been erased… “No,” Goro says out of sheer disbelief, the same time Yoshizawa flicks her finger to the ‘Palace’ tab and says in a somehow-perfect voice that doesn’t shake: “Akira Kurusu.” “Candidate found.”

Akira doesn't have a physical location for his distortion to center on; Metaverse Palace access depends on target/location/distortion to find routing, and location has thus far always been physical (Shujin, shack, Shibuya/Tokyo, Futaba's room, Okumura Foods company HQ, courthouse, Diet building). But somehow he's managed to escape Maruki's reality through a Palace of his own.

And, look. I've read a lot of Joker gets a Palace fics. The keywords vary from fic to fic; distortion is commonly masquerade / prison / theatre, or anything reasonable construed to separate facets of the social self. Location also varies, but less; I've seen Leblanc / his room / all of Tokyo / the entire world.

I'm not going to do anything particularly new either. But the keyword for location in this AU is going to be Akira's heart.

It's not a physical location, obviously. But it is also a very fitting metaphor for a Phantom Thief turned Palace owner who knows exactly what distortion is. It also provides a convenient respite from Maruki's reality, because "Akira Kurusu's heart" is not part of Maruki's cognition the same way "courthouse" or "Diet Building" might be. So when transported there by the Metaverse, "Kasumi" probably gets a flood of terrible memories, since she is in a plane of existence where she truly and only exists as Sumire.

As for distortion... I haven't decided yet, but I'm leaning towards prison. (rubs hands) it will slot nicely with the emotional repression angle: a prison with high walls and iron spikes, perched on a stormy island and impenetrable to all. Akira truly deludes himself in believing his heart is an impenetrable fortress where all his feelings must stay locked up... forever. Goro and Sumire are basically fighting to open the doors in his heart and stopping him from repressing his feelings, which is some dramatic irony with Mr. Black Mask doing the infiltration.

No real details yet, but I do want there to be a perfect replica of the interrogation room, including all the abuse and drugs, because poor akiren is probably repressing his trauma over that too :( I wonder how Black Mask Goro would react to seeing the interrogation room in full, bloody detail? Plus having Sumire along for the ride, who didn't know that this happened, making them the two absolute worst people to be witnessing this side of him.

Anyway, Third Semester Palace is more interesting to me than a post-game one because of all the wonky shenanigans around Maruki's control of reality. If reality is Maruki's "Palace", then the Wild Card (who resists by his very nature; see how he and Goro are the only ones sane) defends himself by escaping to another plane of existence. Unfortunately, one option is forming a Palace, which Akira was already on his way to doing because [insert fanon and this guy's trauma over losing Akechi and the interrogation room and the social burden of being an unwanted criminal branded to him for what seems like the rest of his life]. This all could have been avoided if Lavenza, but there would have been no AU for me to brainrot about, so.

(Why doesn't Maruki show "Kasumi" her trauma when Goro and her show up in the Palace? Butterfly effect: not from Joker being gone, but from Akira having a whole-ass Palace. Akira Kurusu, the kid Maruki therapised for nearly a year and formed a deep bond with. The saviour complex in Maruki compels him to focus on dismantling Akira's Palace, which he tries to do by cognitive "brute force" rather than Goro and Sumire's infiltration. So he's too distracted to harass "Kasumi".)

Technically, Maruki and Akira "doing battle" with cognition (Akira retreating from the overwritten reality hastily; Maruki trying to delete the Palace) implies a metaphysical plane where all Palaces/cognitive worlds exist in a same... "place" where they can cohabit, but that just seems like a dangerously close brush with persona 3's Sea of Souls where Door-kun is sealed and I am running out of steam to think more.

I wrote 1,500 words in a frenzy for this AU and had to share some here before I lost all my inspiration.

Oh my goodness yes I'm so sorry this was left in my ask box for so long!!! This is going to be long and filled with spelling errors

- Henry was born on a small farm with his twin sister Jen

- He first got his love for inventing when going to a county fair and seeing all the fun and interesting rides :)

- For most of his schooling Henry kept to himself having like no friends at all Except Jen and getting bullied a lot...

- Henry and Jen got a scholarship scholarship to a University in Utah for engineering

- Upon getting to university Henry made his first friend! Edwin Murray!! Who was a nerdy little loser just like him!!

- Henry began to start working on a prototype Fredbear in his free time, He wouldn't let anyone help him especially Jen. Since as he said this was his Baby

- Well trying to find a suitable hat and bow tie for the Fred bear prototype Jen and Henry went to a small pawn shop. Where they met William Afton who proceeded to hit on Jen

- Jen found him annoying and creepy but Henry found him cute And in Henry fashion monologued about robots and his dream of opening up a diner for like 3 minutes. And William got interested and proposed himself to become Henry's business adviser.

- The 2 became friends with Henry Being dragged to parties with William And spending more of his free time working on Fredbear and the ideas for Fred bear's family diner with William

- In like 1970 William dragged Henry to a House party where he Proceeded to leave Henry alone As he had intercourse with a woman. That's where Henry met his wife the woman's best friend Emily :) After a wonderful night of chatting and being cute the 2 decided to try going on a date

- Good news the dates went very well! Even better news Emily's family that she estranged herself from has a diner that they can use for FredBears (Maybe Henry had to do a bit of convincing Emily too talk to her Not nice family And stop her from following her dreams but like it all will work out in the end!)

- Henry and Emily's relationship was very very rushed. They started officially dating after the second date and got married after like 3 months of knowing each other... (Henry didn't rest things along at all they're in true love and it's going to help him achieve his dreams so it's wonderful and fine!)

- Their wedding was very small and short, But it was the happiest day of Henry's life :)

- Up until a couple months later when his sweet twins were born. At the time they were only expecting one child so Charlie was a bit of a surprise but Henry was more than ready to be a dad!

- And even more wonderful Emily got the diner from her parents and now they have a place to start FredBears!

- By the time Charlie and Sammy are 2 Fredbears is up and running with food and very limited animatronics (no Spring lock suits yet) It's a huge spectacle and it makes like a lot of money

- Soon as the business continues to do well Henry and Williams start working on Spring lock suits! Sadly the first test ended with William in the hospital but on the bright side in the hospital William met his future wife so it all works out as it always does!

- Life just keeps on getting better for Henry the business is doing incredibly well (they're even thinking of branching out to other locations), The twins continue to be wonderful little balls of energy and William has a daughter now With his new lovely wife. Also Springlock Suits are working really well

- All the way up until 1980 Things are going incredibly well for Henry and then Charlie is found dead.

- Henry is devastated. His sweet little girl was murdered and he doesn't know what to do. He cries like a lot and is basically inconsolable. He starts drinking too much too since that's the only thing along with building robots that makes the pain go away.

- The puppet starts malfunctioning it was probably all the rain Henry doesn't think about it and just continues to spiral into depression and making more robots. And of course William, william makes him happy, William makes him want to live and not die..

- He continues like that until 1983 when Evan is murdered by Michael. This hurts him even more. His machine his first child a killer? Why does everything he make break and turn rotten what did he do wrong?? Around this time due to his alcoholism and not being a good dad subsidies too busy being sad Emily and Sammy leave him.

- Henry continues to wallow in sadness it getting only worse once his wife leaves. Even gets the idea to make himself a robot daughter which he begins working on in 1984. Henry also spends all of the time he can drinking with William he needs William. He also cuts off all contact with Jen

- Missing children's incident happens and Henry is a wreck. Everyone blames him for the murder thanks to his antisocial behavior and general weirdness. He's arrested for a bit but led off due to lack of evidence. People don't listen though they spray paint his house and yell at him. So he just stays to himself more...

- Henry's basically just a full recluse by 1986 He barely even knows about circus babies, At this point he just signs where William tells him to sign and builds whatever machines William says they need. Work on the Charlie block continues she's even coming along :) The Charlie bought makes him happy. It's his sweet little girl back to him again sure she can't really talk or do anything yet but he's working on it!

- 1987 is when the older siblings of some of the MCI break into his house and break things and find Charlie bot and hit her over the head with a bat in fear. They kill his sweet little girl. They beat him over the head with a baseball bat and break his arm by accident. Henry doesn't press charges though William suggests making them work at fazbears as payment and Henry agrees. He's too busy wallowing in grief after the loss of Charlie bot to do much else...

- After the bite of 87 and MCI part 2 Henry doesn't know what to do. The lawsuits keep piling up and everything feels horrible and the company keeps getting bigger. William does most of the business stuff and everything else now. Henry just makes things.

Everything changes when one night drinking with William, william reveals that he's the 1 who did it. William killed all the kids, William melted down the kids and stirred them up into a liquid medal and put it in Henry's drink so Henry could live forever.

- Henry forces William out of his house screaming at him and locks the door. Whatever William did it worked. Henry's wrong now and he knows it. William keeps on trying to talk to him but Henry doesn't listen what he does is called Jen and beg her for help with whatever happening.

- Henry after talking with Jen signs away the company and moves in with her. They soon figure out that he's basically immortal and can't die/get hurt and also gives off really really bad vibes.... This makes Henry even more sad, But Jen is able to help him a bit

- Over the next couple of years Henry just kind of chills with Jen, Most of the time he's depressed and despondent but they're still kind of making progress. Emily tries to reach out to him in this period but Henry refuses to talk to his wife fearing that she'll think him some kind of demon after what William did (He's just a guy with glowing eyes and immortality he has weird hang-ups about it Be nice to him) He does try to talk to Sammy but Sammy wants nothing to do with him

-Sammy takes over the company and gets married but Henry doesn't attend either of these things. But Jen is able to get him out sometimes on walks and like On other excursions. He even kind of starts to make friends At the local library that Jen forces him to go to. Of course throughout all of this he misses William. Sometimes it feels like Henry needs William to live.

- By the time of fnaf3 Henry is still a mess but doing better, Jens even got him out too AA Meetings and talking to Emily a bit. And then Spring trap happens and Williams back and Henry doesn't know what to do. Because Henry needs William. Williams like in addiction to Henry. (The relationship is very unhealthy)

AU Bot Plots

Okay, so Katara is the teacher here, but I can't decide if the troubled middle schooler is Kiyi or Izumi. I love the idea of both for different reasons, so I'll give an overview of both situations. Sorry, no story snippets this time, but the overviews are long enough that I decided to make this a two-parter. I'll post the second part next week.

Kiyi

After the unexpected death of his estranged mother, Zuko finds himself the guardian of his 12 year old sister, who he didn't know existed until the social worker contacted him. The transition has been difficult for both siblings. Kiyi lost her mother, and then because her surprise older brother lived across the country, she lost her home and her friends too.

Zuko has a complicated relationship with his family. He hadn't heard from his mother in over a decade since she left his abusive father in the middle of the night, leaving her two children behind. After an attack that left Zuko permanently scarred, his father is imprisoned, Zuko goes to live with his uncle. His sister, Azula, blames him for them losing their father, the only other parent they had left. She ends up going to stay with two aging aunts who had a clear preference for her over Zuko. After graduating from college, the two siblings are very, very low contact. Zuko's uncle is, as far as he knows, the only family he has left. Then he is contacted by the social worker and finds out simultaneously that his mother is dead, and he has another sister, who has no other family to turn to. (I haven't decided if Kiyi is Ozai's or if Ursa was having an affair, but either way, she was already pregnant when she left). Zuko is reeling from all the information at once, and now he has to deal with his own emotional turmoil, and the emotional turmoil of a 12 year old girl who he's now responsible for, all while scrambling to find a two bedroom apartment.

Kiyi is enrolled in school almost immediately, but she has a hard time adjusting. She doesn't make friends, and hardly even speaks. When she does, she says things that get her in trouble. One teacher, though, sees that Kiyi is acting out from grief, and instead of punishing her, Katara Imiq tries to get Kiyi to open up. Eventually, she has to set up a meeting with her brother to get help come up with a plan to help Kiyi, and Katara sees that Zuko's struggling, too. Some plot happens, and Zuko ends up signing Kiyi up for martial arts classes with Suki, and he gets pulled into Katara's circle of friends. Through their newfound support system, Zuko and Kiyi start to heal and learn how to live with each other. Azula may or may not pop up once or twice, at least hinting at a potential reconciliation between the three siblings.

At some point in the story, Kiyi will start hinting to Zuko that he needs a date, and her teacher is single.

I talk about this too much and I’m sorry but. He was just SO lonely when we met him. He was still trapped in the hell of internalized homophobia and didn’t have anyone to hold his hand through that. He was estranged from his parents. Doesn’t seem super close even now to his sisters. His best friend was missing and presumed dead. His literal only friend was the 40 year old sister of his friend who tbh was really using him more than being his friend. He wanted romantic love but I feel like he had sort of resigned himself to the fact that he’d never have it. What he needed almost more than that was community. And he has that now 🥹

yknow, admittedly I don't have the book in front of me, but I think the thing that I'll focus on that stuck out to me most was that I never particularly felt like lucien did anything for his own sake -- which, given the through-line of the entire character in the stream (and his iterations in molly and kingsley, who have a similar selfishness to them), felt like a considerable divestment from the character we knew.

off the top of my head, in the book it turns out he didn't seek out the claret orders -- his friend brevyn puts in a good word for him. when he leaves, it's also because he's part of a group, and it's because of her contact with brevyn that he meets vess derogna and ultimately gets put on the contract to go to aeor. he opens the book in the first place because brevyn died getting it and he feels bad. the entire bit in the stream where he mentions that he made the decision to turn on the somnovem? also written out. he has no recollection, it seems, of any of his time while dead. we see none of the thought process, we see none of the development. it was weird and it made no sense.

points where he does make those choices (killing his abusive parents, leaving his sister) are mentioned offhand and then barely ever spoken of again. his dying thoughts are of his ex and not...his estranged sister that thought he was a monster.

the entire point of the novel was to see him turn into the kind of person that hit the big evil red buttons pretty regularly. and yet it felt that every instance that was narratively significant of him doing something villainous was undercut with someone else hitting the button for him and his hands being tied. to a certain extent, the only thing he ever truly fucking does for himself in the book is die.

Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

It took so long for the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to materialize that two knockoffs beat it to the finish line: The Banana Splits Movie and Willy’s Wonderland. The thing is, neither of those films was particularly good, so the wait could’ve been worth it. Unfortunately, the long-awaited feature-length adaptation of the video game by Scott Cawthon is yet another heartbreak. In fact, it’s even more of a letdown than the others because this is the film you’ve actually been waiting for, rather than the store-brand substitute.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, a once-successful Chuck-E-Cheese-like entertainment center with animatronic mascots who sang, played music and entertained guests, was shut down in the 1980s after several child disappearances. In the present day, Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) struggles to make ends meet while taking care of his younger sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), and agrees to work as a security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s. Mike is still traumatized from the disappearance of his younger brother many years ago. Every night, he revisits his memories of that fateful day through his dreams, hoping some new detail will emerge and allow him to figure out who took Garrett. On his first night at Freddy Fazbear’s, he has a different dream, making him wonder if the mystery surrounding the abandonned building might help him get some answers.

I should begin this review by telling you that I only have second-hand knowledge of the game. I know what it’s about, I know the characters but I’ve never played. One thing I know is that it’s a horror game whose frights are primarily jump scares. This makes the film’s lack of scares - particularly of jump scares - stunning. If there was one movie that could’ve used long, tense stretches of someone in near darkness wandering through corridors while the audience waits for something to pop up out of nowhere, it was Five Nights at Freddy’s. Instead, we get a plot that frankly, was ill-conceived from the start.

One of the major issues with this film is the storyline with Garrett. When we meet Mike, he’s so mentally unhinged he violently beats a man he thinks is kidnapping a child. You’re supposed to think “Oh no! Poor guy! He's so messed up!". Instead, you begin suspecting the mechanical bear with gears for brains is smarter than him - you’re right. Of all the jobs Mike could’ve gotten, security guard is probably the worst one. See, he insists on going to sleep at the same time, every night. Before he goes to sleep, he stares at a photo of the trees from the park where his brother went missing and listens to the sound of birds. Mike believes that we actually remember everything we see and that if you can’t remember just yet, you can unlock your memories by visiting them through your dreams. You want to feel bad for him because his parents are dead now, leaving him alone to take care of his sister but he’s an irresponsible menace. You don’t sympathize with him at all.

Mike won't win you over even after the film introduces the picture’s villain: his estranged aunt Jane (Mary Stuart Masterson). She wants custody of Abby so she can collect those monthly government child tax checks. You're wondering why she's necessary. Aren't those killer robots the villains? Well, she's included so she can hire a bunch of dumb-dumbs to break into Freddy Fazbear's. It's no surprise that they all get turned into hamburger meat and no, you won’t see anything shocking even then, as the killer mascots go through the trouble to clean up after themselves once the carnage is over. PG-13 horror can work. It doesn't here.

I cannot overstate how baffling the "missing brother" backstory thing is. It's more nonsense than sense, particularly once Mike realizes what happens in his dreams can carry over to real life. It's all building up to a mystery so easy to deduce you'll feel like a galaxy-brained genius. Not only is it obvious; it's clumsy. Loads of exposition is delivered point-blank by police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) and the ending is as convincing as this film is gory, which is to say not at all. At least Matthew Lillard as Mike's career counsellor seems to be having fun.

What's the worst thing about Five Nights at Freddy's? It might be this running gag that comes up a few times and then again during the end credits. I say that because it shows director Emma Tammi - who probably did her best while the executives pushed and bullied the junior director into making this watered-down would-be spook-fest - knows the premise would've been perfect for a horror-comedy. Instead, it's unintentionally funny at best - there's a scene in which one of the killer animatronics takes a cab ride(!!!) - and boring at worst. I'm sure die-hard fans will think it's great but that's only because of the name that's been slapped onto the poster. Five Nights at Freddy's is a colossal, disappointing mess.  (April 6, 2023)
