pet peeve #296: "optimistic nihilism"
it's existentialism
words MEAN THINGS. and what you refer to when you say 'optimistic nihilism' is where nihilism actually stops and existentialism ollies in on its skateboard wearing the loudest sunglasses imaginable, sipping koolaide jammers.

gradually learning that coping w my anxiety is gonna require a level of what feels rn like narcissism (but i know logically is not). i have to respond to "what if everyone hates me" with "so what if they do, they can all have bad opinions if they want to, i hate some people too that's just life". going out wearing outfits i like but am nervous about with the mindset of "i look hot as shit and anyone who disagrees is wrong because it's subjective anyways". about half of trying to get over my fear of social situations has been me hyping myself up by telling myself that not only do i have as much of a right to be where i am as they do, someone there is going to be happy to see me for some reason

May I request Poseidon, Thor and Hades with a sweet, female s/o who's a god of destruction, hunting, and nihilism?
If Their S/O Was The Deity of 'Evil'
Type of Writing: Request Name: If Their S/O Was The Deity of 'Evil' Characters: Poseidon, Thor, and Hades Requester: Anonymous
A/N: I've been reading so much on Norse Mythology it's insane... to sum it up I'm a nerd, and it's fun, ngl🤣

🔱 Poseidon never leaves his kingdom unless it was necessary
🔱 That did bode well with who you were. As the Greek Deity of Destruction, Hunting, and Nihilism, you had helped raise multiple Gods into their roles, such as Ares, the Greek God of War, and Heracles, the Human-turned-God of Fortitude
🔱 Because of how violent Ares grew to be and how impulsive Artemis had been instead of regal, as many viewed a woman to act like that, many viewed you as a mixture of them
🔱 But, you were quite the opposite. At least to Poseidon and his main allies, that is
🔱 You, to your husband, was the complete opposite as what you were rumored to act like. Instead of a cold-hearted and blood-thirsty deity who lived off of the pain and harm against other living beings, you were a sweet and adoring S/O
🔱 And whenever your husband would get pissed off about something, you could just rest your hand on his shoulder and calm him down like nothing... much like what he can do for you
🔱 Poseidon, despite what he says, enjoys it when you take his nephews, Heracles and Ares, out of the main meeting room and would take them to do some things so that they wouldn't get caught in the middle of a sibling-driven argument (mainly Adamas and Poseidon)
🔱 It makes him feel at least some kind of connection to his family, even if he isn't fond of many members (unless you consider his relationship with Hades to be somewhat healthy)

🌩️ Thor always liked you, but since your father, Þjazi (Thiazi), had obviously caused a massive incident when it came to the Gods and your older sister, Skadi, he had pushed it all behind
🌩️ You on the other hand, had evolved your relationships with the Norse Pantheon, specifically you had welded a bond with Thor and his father, Odin
🌩️ Odin was very weary about you being alone with his son at first, but when Thor had come up to discuss his emotions towards you, the head God had just sighed and told him about how he had felt about the God of Thunder's mother when they first met centuries ago
🌩️ Thor was obviously shocked to hear that he was in love with you, a mixture of Goddess and Jötunn, but he did accept it and admit his feelings to you, shocking your sister, Skadi, and brother-in-law, Njord
🌩️ When you guys married and became each other's other half, many began rumors about you, since you began to represent Destruction, Hunting, and Nihilism in the Norse Pantheon
🌩️ Thor was not amused when those rumors had reached his ears, in fact, he was extremely pissed when someone had compared your actions to your father's. You were far from your father in his eyes
🌩️ While your father was hailed for his threatening and domineering nature with certain beings, while you were either quiet and polite or sweeter than a cup-full of sugar
🌩️ The God of Thunder, despite his wishes, doesn't go after those who speak bad of you, as he knows you'd be upset, along with your sister, who has been working hard on keeping your bonds in the family perfect
🌩️ He doesn't want his precious S/O mad, now does he?

💀 Hades himself doesn't have the best rumors being thrown around about him, so he understands how you feel when a new one arises
💀 Many think of the God of the Undead to be a very cold and manipulative being, but to you and his family and closest allies, Hades is a very caring and loyal brother/friend/husband
💀 Your husband was one of the first people to accept you inside of the old group of Deities, and he was by-far the most welcoming Gods, alongside Heracles and Aphrodite
💀 He adored how you represented such 'horrible' things, that being; Destruction, Hunting, and Nihilism, yet you were one of the nicest divine beings that he had ever both laid eyes on and given his heart too
💀 Hades and you had one of the best marriages hailed throughout the Heavens, from the Norse to the Shinto, everybody would agree on how amazing you guys held each other's hands through every single endeavor that threatened your relationship
💀 Despite what many believe, you are very kind to your husband's family. Many other Gods and Humans believe that you and his brothers hold a deep resentment for one another
💀 When in reality, you bond with them all very well. For Adamas you would help him train and keep himself in gear. Poseidon and you sit in silence and read whenever you don't want to speak, to him you're a decent divine being. And for Zeus, you're an ideal older sibling, you have had to hold him back from doing something that would either cause a war or Hera's anger... so basically just another kind of war...
💀 Your husband loves to see you bond with his family, especially Poseidon, since the God of the Seas isn't very fond of many. To Hades, he seems like he only tolerates him. So, seeing you guys actually bond in a way is nice

The main flaw of the whole "Do as Thou Wilt" philosophy preached by Satanists is that it doesn't really have any defenses against selfishness, cruelty, or apathy.
In a world where other people exist with their own wants and needs, it isn't possible (or ethical) to always insist on having what you want above all else. In order to always Have It Your Way you'd have to become a bully or a tyrant, someone who uses manipulation, coercion, or violence to browbeat others into serving you.
I'm sure defenders of this philosophy will try to claim that one could still be kind and selfless anyway, so long as that is what they want. And while that is technically true, even the most benevolent people don't always want to be good (that's just human nature). Furthermore, there is no real way to fully condemn malicious, prideful behavior. Satanism is a philosophy built on pride - on prioritizing one's will above all else. To condemn someone else for doing what they want, goes against the whole point. Even trying to argue or converse on ethics becomes pointless, because why should someone bother to consider another's views if they don't want to? If we lived in a world where everyone thought this way, it wouldn't be almost completely pointless to try and talk to other people honestly. Because if they're just going to do what they want anyway, and if you only care about getting what you want, what would even be the point?
In the end, Satanism shares the same flaws with philosophies like Nihilism or Objectivism, in that it is self-destructive. These are philosophies that cannot be used to argue against unethical behavior, only to excuse. And at that point any attempts to discuss ethics using them as a framework becomes an exercise in futilty. In order to condemn unethical behavior and to have a healthy society, it's crucial for people to believe that there is worth and purpose to human life, and to consider the needs, rights, and desires of others when making decisions.
Humanity is a social animal. We weren't meant to live alone.

Sam’s “destiny” was to be “king of the rats/riffraff”…and he didn’t really want that.
I don’t exactly have textual support for this but I suspect that Sam would have more readily embraced a Heavenly destiny, because it represents rising above his class background. Whereas Hell represents thriving in a place that is literally beneath him. (Well, it wouldn’t have been him per se…that was a bait and switch trick where he would have been “boy-king” in body only—a sham class rank built to entice his ego into said trap with the lure of false power. But the overall point stands!)
Don’t get me wrong; I support his rejection of Hell. In-text, it’s healthy to reject the nihilism and disinhibited-loss-of-free-will that Hell can tend to represent.
This is more a thought about how he originally associates it in his brain, I think. It’s an interesting thought! And now I’m thinking about how Rowena and Crowley view Hell as rising above…

Sev + "I'm going to give you five seconds to take that back."
Sev x gn!reader (no use of 'y/n' and no pronouns). Flirty (ish).
Word Count: 2,400
Warnings: discussions of medical concerns, references to missions, stimulant misuse, grandstanding, ill-planned bets, semi-flirtatious wrestling.
---
Tumblr media
It had all started when you tried to talk your most recent set of charges into being more healthy.
Delta Squad had been a source of constant frustration for you since you were assigned to be their medic. Normally, commando squads weren’t overly concerned about having a medic on-board. However, Delta had a close call on a previous mission. One commando, Sev, had been in especially bad shape.
Some time in a bacta tank had fixed the worst of their injuries, but there were certain limits they shouldn’t push if they wanted to avoid a repeat. Sev needed to be particularly careful, since he had suffered damage to his ribs and many of the organs within them - including his heart.
Which was why you had been irretrievably furious when you found him downing a packet of stims.
“Are you trying to die?” you had demanded. “Because I know you’re not stupid, and those are the only possible reasons you would be using stims with damage to your heart. What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking that I have a mission to complete and I don’t have eight hours to sleep before we get there.”
Honestly, you could have expected that kind of answer, but the nonchalant tone Sev had used was what pushed you over the edge.
“And when they wear off? You know, since you took them three hours before we even break atmosphere?” You had shaken your head, clenching your jaw so tightly that the muscles ached. “If you had bothered to talk to me, I would have advised you to sleep for that time, then take half a stim pack when we arrive.”
“I don’t need some vorpan baar'ur telling me what to do,” he had spat. “As long as I can do my job, the GAR doesn’t worry about the little things. Including my health or my life.”
You didn’t understand the Mando’a, obviously, but that didn’t stop you from rolling your eyes at the drama of his caustic words.
“Apparently, having someone tell you what to do is exactly what you needI” you had countered. “Do you know what kind of shape you’ll be in after another dose of stims? Even I would be able to beat you in a wrestling match! Some use you’ll be to your brothers then.”
It was a bit too far, and you felt bad as silence fell in the small ship. You had worked with enough troopers to know that they prided themselves on loyalty to their brothers above all else. In your defense, though, you recognized the signs of someone who wouldn’t be talked out of their nihilism. By meeting him head-on using the parameters of life as he saw it, you had hoped to shake him out of his stubbornness.
It was only bad luck that it hadn’t worked. Sev’s expression had darkened and you prepared yourself for a threat or a cutting insult, but Scorch had laughed, breaking the tension.
“Sounds like a good, old-fashioned bet,” he had said, chuckling in a way that could only be described as ‘gleeful’.
Sev had scoffed and walked away without another word, but your luck ran out.
Delta Squad had gotten a call from General Jusik, alerting them that the leader of the Separatist-controlled planet had opted for a peace talk. As a gesture of good faith, the GAR was withdrawing the commando squads who had been set to invade.
“We’ve been redirected,” Boss announced when Jusik disconnected the call. The sergeant stepped out of the small cockpit where he had been navigating with Fixer. “We’re to touch down on a Republic-friendly planet in the next system and settle in. We’ll be backup if things go south, so stay ready to go. Get some sleep if you can.”
“Those of us who didn’t already take a packet of stims,” you had muttered when Sev went back to cleaning his blaster instead of heading for the bunks.
Unfortunately, your sarcasm would prove to be your undoing. Scorch perked up at your quiet admonishment, visibly brightening. “Hey, didn’t you say you could beat Sev in hand-to-hand when he’s using stims?”
“Yes,” you confirmed, holding eye contact with Scorch, but trying to watch Sev in your peripheral vision.
“I’m going to give you five seconds to take that back,” Sev growled. When you looked over, you saw that he very much was not focusing on his blaster anymore.
“I don’t think I will.” The way you lifted your chin was nothing short of antagonistic, but you were angry. Clarity of thought while angry had never been your forte. Despite that, you clocked the gray undertones in Sev’s face and the way his fingers were trembling slightly. “In fact, I think I could beat you now, whether or not you take another dose.”
“You’re on,” Sev told you, a challenge thick in his tone.
“Wait-” How you hadn’t seen this coming, you weren’t sure, but your stomach was sinking. “I didn’t mean I actually want to wrestle you. I’m just telling you, as a medical professional, that-”
“Hey, you already said you would,” Scorch reminded you. “Too late to go back on it now.”
“Knock it off, Six-Two. It isn’t too late for anything,” Fixer told him, turning around in the cockpit to face you all. Before you could thank him, he continued as he eyed you directly. “It’s actually a choice: wrestle Oh-Seven or admit that stims aren’t that bad.”
“They are that bad, though,” you insisted.
“If you’re going to wrestle on my ship, do it in the cargo bay,” Boss said over his shoulder. “I don’t want to explain broken equipment to the GAR.”
“This isn’t enough of a challenge to break anything,” Sev decreed. He watched you as he set aside his blaster and stood. “Cargo bay. Five minutes.”
It was overdramatic to specify a time and place on such a small ship, but it still made the pit of your stomach tighten. You took care to offer him an unimpressed face and a simple nod.
"This is gonna be fun!" Scorch said excitedly.
You strongly disagreed, but that wasn’t going to help. It was far too late for that. So you stifled your misgivings and made your way to the back of the ship.
Sev had stripped off his armor by the time you got there. That hadn’t been a concern, but you wondered if it should have been. There was nothing at all you could do against plastoid armor. However, much as you loathed to admit it even to yourself… you were almost as disadvantaged anyway. The sight of Sev’s muscles swelling and bulging under the tightness of his body glove was enough to make the ship feel like it was lurching through the galaxy.
You were wearing comfortable clothes, having refused to change into your lightly armored medic’s gear until you were closer to your eventual destination. You were comfortable and didn’t have to strip off any clothing, but that was almost a pity. It was starting to feel distinctly warm aboard the small ship…
“Ready?” Sev asked.
You nodded, resigned to being decimated by the fully-trained commando. He didn’t attack immediately, choosing to watch you instead. You circled warily, already closer than you liked. The cargo bay of the ship was reasonably big and, as promised, you weren’t going to break anything. That should keep Boss happy, but there still wasn’t a vast amount of space.
So you and Sev circled around, watching each other. You were focused on his chest: all of the hand-to-hand training the GAR had offered told you that motion was typically forecasted in the torso, so that was the best place to watch if you wanted to avoid being surprised.
When you occasionally snuck a glance at Sev, he was watching your face rather than your torso. At first, you wondered if you should be doing the same with him, but then you started to feel flustered rather than wary at the weight of his eyes.
That was when he pounced.
You managed to avoid the first lunge, but you weren’t expecting him to recover his balance as quickly as he did. In half a moment, Sev was upright once more and diving at you.
A strong arm hooked around your waist and you were falling, cushioned from the ground by Sev’s body, but the impact still knocked the air from your lungs. Sev flipped you over and you made your move, rolling quickly out from under him before he had time to close the distance between you.
You got to your feet - or, you started to. Sev’s hand closed around your ankle and pulled. It wasn’t enough to put you back on the floor, but it was enough to bring you heavily to your hands and knees. Since you were already in the proper position, you kicked out with your foot and felt a surge of victory when your heel connected.
And then you were horrified, turning around as you gave a loud gasp. “Sev! Are you okay? I’m so sorry-”
There was a small smudge of dirt on his forehead from your boot, but Sev’s grin flashed bright. “I’m fine. Keep going.”
And then he grabbed both of your ankles, pulling hard enough that your knees went out from under you and you landed on your stomach with a soft, “Oof!”
Sudden heat at your back warned that Sev was getting ready to pin you, so you rolled again. He seemed to expect the movement then, dropping onto you in mid-turn from your side to your back.
With a sudden, surging need to keep your freedom, you pulled back a fist. Your goal was Sev’s recently injured ribs, but you came to your senses before the blow came too close to landing. You were a medic, and every bit of training you had received covered how to prevent injuries, not cause them.
Sev didn’t know that, however, and he winced sharply. He curled into himself in an effort to protect his ribs - a motion that only put more pressure on them. The flash of pain across his face would have made you stop even if you hadn’t already decided to do so.
“Are you-?”
Before you could ask if he was hurt, he had reached down, snagged your wrists, and pressed them against the cold metal of the floor. You were pinned.
You were on your back with a commando pressing you into the floor, but you both… stopped. Your breathing was heavy and - with more than a little surprise - you noticed that Sev’s was, too. Of course, his ribs probably still hurt and you would have to check him for a boot-borne head injury, but you couldn’t help but wonder if he was feeling anything other than pain.
You definitely were.
The chilly bite of the floor at your back faded into the distance as you and Sev studied each other from closer than you had ever been. Sev always looked vaguely angry, but you had wondered if that was his natural expression. That seemed to be true: if you didn’t know him as well as you did, you would have taken his expression to be one of irritation and disdain. But there was softness in it, too. That was what left you feeling like you couldn’t get a full breath.
“Well, Sev, I’d say you won,” Boss remarked dryly.
The comment pulled you back into the moment and you realized that Boss, Fixer, and Scorch were all observing the scene. It felt vaguely ridiculous then, wondering what it would be like to kiss the man who currently had you pinned to the dirty floor. But as Sev released his grip and stood, you missed the warmth of him like it was something tangible.
To your surprise, though, Sev held a hand out to you in a silent offer to help you stand. You took it and he lifted you easily. The silence was thick.
You cleared your throat. “Well, I guess I was wrong. One stim pack isn’t enough for me to win a wrestling match. I still think-”
“Save it,” Sev ordered and you froze. No matter what you thought had changed between you, it wasn’t enough to save you from his sharp tongue. But when he spoke again, Sev’s voice was far more gentle. “It was closer than I thought it would be. Another few minutes and I would have probably lost. I’ll lay off the stims.”
“Aww, no rematch?” Scorch complained.
Fixer made a sharply derisive noise and left for the cockpit. “I’ll pilot us to the staging planet.”
“All of you, get some rest,” Boss ordered before he left as well.
Scorch lingered a moment, glancing between you and Sev. You were still standing close together, the tension palpable between you. Unlike most of your interactions, that tension was not actively hostile.
You were torn between wanting Scorch to leave so you and Sev could talk about what had just happened, and wanting him to stay so you didn’t have to. Slowly, like he was watching something interesting unfold before his eyes, Scorch turned and retreated to his bunk. Since the bunks were in the section just ahead of the cargo bay, Scorch was still in hearing range, but a sense of privacy settled thickly around you and Sev.
When you finally gathered the courage to look over, Sev was watching you. Neither of you spoke, and your mind raced in an effort to find the right words.
Your lips parted, though you didn’t have the slightest idea what you planned on saying. Fortunately, Sev spoke before you could say some muddled assortment of words that might mean nothing… or too much.
“We should sleep while we can,” he told you. After a moment, he added with a wry grin, “Some medic told me I need actual rest, not just stim packs.”
It was more familiar ground, and you relaxed enough to jibe, “What disappointing news.”
“Yeah,” Sev agreed. “But the delivery made it a little better.”
You could only shake your head as you followed him to the bunks.

Author's Note - I love Sev wayyyyy too much! I have written more fics for him than for any other member of Delta Squad. That being said, I'm going to focus on Scorch and Boss next since I haven't done much for them. If you have any great ideas for either one that you'd like to throw my way, feel free to comment, ask, or message!
Thanks for reading! You can find other works on my masterlist. As of a few days ago, I discontinued my taglist. You can find just fics on my side-blog, @wanderinginksplot-writes. (As soon as I work through my drafts on this blog, all fics will be posted there first and cross-posted here later.)

Is it selfish and entitled to be optimistic? I know a lot of shit is happening but a lot of good stuff is happening to and I just feel like their are people who are not right wing who just want the rest of us to give up.
Er..... no????
Sorry, this is just the exact kind of question that, when I see it, makes me wonder what sort of insane terminally online brainworms are invading the Discourse (tm) now and both be surprised and not at all surprised that you feel the need to ask. So much of online culture is about nihilism, especially in social media: everything's terrible, everyone's doomed, if you don't recognize that it's Doomed then you're either delusional or "lol neurotypical," and any attempts to change that narrative, push back on it, point out the good things, or insist that meaningful action is both necessary and able to make a difference are somehow Morally Wrong. It's tied into the entire idea that doing nothing is the best course of (non) action, we're all doomed anyway, and that it's better to accept that and aggressively insist that others agree, because conveniently, if everything's terrible and past hope anyway, there's no obligation to try to fix it. It's the real-world corollary of the grimdark fiction insistence that only evil, depression, death, and cruelty are "real," and everything else is naive, stupid, simplistic, saccharine, or otherwise unrepresentative of the "reality" of the Big Mean World. And just like... come on. That's not true. We all know it's not true. Shut up.
It's the same kind of culture that glamorizes depression and poor mental health, insists that any basic steps to help yourself are "ableist," or otherwise does its best to cling to its negative and disempowered mindset, rather than taking any responsibility for either an individual or collective situation and attempting, however small, to make a difference. I'm not surprised that therapy-speak has been yet again weaponized to insist that anyone who has any amount of hope or positive outlook is "selfish and entitled," but as your Local Wise Tumblr Elder, I can safely assure you that it's bullshit and you're under absolutely no obligation to believe it, listen to it, or incorporate it into your worldview or actions. Giving up and throwing up your hands is easy. The hard part is actually trying to change things, accepting that we live in a flawed world, and that it nonetheless does not need to be unmitigated misery at all times. It will not be everything, but it will be something, and it will matter. It will also make you feel better, and very probably, other people as well.
Anyway: you're right. There ARE good things happening. They don't get nearly as much press or play as the bad things, but they still exist, and they should be pointed out. If you're participating in discussions or groups that are pushing the idea that only the bad things are valid, and you're "selfish" for insisting otherwise, I suggest that you drop them or otherwise cut way back or set healthy boundaries. Because, it's just not true, it deliberately disheartens and demoralizes you from trying, and the only people who benefit from that are the fuckwits who are largely responsible for ruining shit in the first place. So don't let them get away with it even more and automatically apply this mindset to yourself before you even try. Etc. etc. you are not obliged to complete the work, but nor are you free to abandon it. So yeah.

What's your take on Ketheric's evilness? When I rank my Chosen on the shitty people ladder, I put Ketheric at the top.
Man I joke a lot about how I could fix Ketheric but yeah he's pretty terrible. I don't know if he quite beats Gortash for me for scale though. The wrap sheet for Gort is truly so heinous.
(Also worth noting that when I say "Orin didn't do anything wrong" I obviously don't mean that but I DO mean that I have a lot of sympathy for Orin because she beyond any of the others had basically no chance to turn out differently. She was conditioned to the point of actual madness. But anyway this isn't about Orin.)
The thing that gets me about Ketheric is the fact he weighs up what he does constantly and still does it. And unlike Gortash and Orin, it's not like he came from horror. He was a normal guy with a wife and kids (side note I still don't understand the Thorm family. I landed on Malus being his uncle, Gerringothe being a sister, and Thisobald being a bastard child born after Melodia died.) But grief just kept pushing him down and further into abject nihilism. I think that's where my sympathy with him does come in.
Ketheric just has this apathy to anything that isn't Isobel. He just put all the love and light of his whole world onto one person and that's so unhealthy and fucked up! I think that made her a target for Shar, who is always looking for ways to fell important Selunites. He thought it was Aylin's attention (and it might have been, partly) but I think Shar saw the opportunity in his obsession more than in the risk of their relationship. Even if it hadn't been though, how can one woman shoulder that much unhealthy devotion? It's not good parenting, it's not healthy, it's not right. But when he lost his wife, his only joy became her, and when he lost her he would do anything to assuage that grief. I think when you've experienced similar loss, he does become quite sympathetic there.
I think I understand why people follow Shar, from that reasoning. Shar isn't just evil, she is a nothing, she is emptiness, and when you are in the deepest throws of grief there is nothing you long for more than those tiny moments, for example when you first wake before your mind recalls, where you feel nothing.
It just feels like he carved away his humanity to starve off grief as much as he could like a man literally cutting off his own flesh to feed a rabid dog. He let EVERYTHING become a victim of his grief. And then he finally meets somebody who says to him hey, you don't have to do this, where EVERYBODY else has been enabling him for their own designs. He's the great general that Shar wants to use, that the Myrkulites want to use, that Gortash and The Dark Urge want to use and he is completely malleable to those needs. Which is a chilling kind of evil, really. He lets evil seep into him like a poison until it is too late.

Dazai osamu: Evolution
Tumblr media
In a lot of ways this is where my Dazai analysis will really start, this is going to be insanely long so be prepared. It also has spoilers of the manga, anime, and most of the light novels.
I’ve talked about how is a mistake to measure Dazai’s character growth in terms of morality, because that has never been the main point of his characterization. Being a “good” or a “Bad” person is not as important as the fandom makes it to be. Dazai is unapologetically a morally grey character and he will always be. However, this doesn’t mean that Dazai hasn’t changed.
He has and it goes far beyond him changing into a boring trench coat and calling himself a detective. He has changed so fundamentally speaking that I’d go and say that right now is the most developed character in this area and the thing that make this even more surprising is that his character growth has not finished yet. He keeps evolving.
To understand this let’s start analyzing him chronologically:
Tumblr media
Fifteen year old Dazai is probably the lowest we’ve ever seen Dazai. Starting fifteen, Dazai is showed to us as someone who genuinely wants to die, he is /not/ attempting suicide as a joke, is not a comedic relief. Fifteen year old Dazai wants to die with a desperation that borders on madness. He is so tired of living, so bored of life and the people that surround him, about how predictable they are, about how easy is to manipulate them, there’s not a thing in this world that can surprise him, he is living in this permanent state of numbness. He is completely lonely in a world that will never be able to understand him. And let me make a pause to talk about the fact that it has been /heavily/ implied that Dazai was living in this situation for a long time. People loves to blame Mori for Dazai’s personality but this is simply and canonically speaking not true.
Dazai has already formed most of his worse personality traits by the time Mori found him. Let me remind you that they met when Mori saved Dazai’s life /after/ he attempted suicide at fourteen. Fandom loves to act as Dazai was a perfectly healthy kid that Mori ruined when that’s not true. Mori made it worse, yes. But he wasn’t the cause of it.
“Miscalculation.
You misjudged the situation, he told himself. You failed to pick the optimal solution. You shouldn’t have chosen this child to help you. Dazai is unpredictable. He can be sharp but in a dark, twisted way. He’s observant. He’s cold and calculating with no equivalent even in the mafia, where the most evil reside”- Mori about Dazai, ligh novel fifteen.
I will talk about this more depth in another essay about Soukoku and the mafia but this is important to aknowledge. Dazai was like this even /before/ Mori’s influence, Mori was scared of him even when Dazai was just a child because he saw how deeply disconnected from his humanity he was. How cruel, cold and calculating he could be.
So going back to the main idea, at this point of the story, Dazai is already numb, manipulative, and machiavellian, he doesn’t trust in anyone and his only real connection is with Mori that looks at him like a convenient weapon to wield. But the most important trait of Dazai at this age? Is how deeply apathetic Dazai is to everything. At this stage of life Dazai lives in a pure nihilism, he doesn’t believe in /anything/, he conceives life as completely meaningless, he doesn’t see a point in existing when there’s no a reason for it. It’s so bad that it’s funny. Mori knows about the /raw/ potential in Dazai, about how valuable he can be as a tool but he can’t use him because Dazai is so unmotivated that he simply doesn’t give a damn about anything. He is a genius and he only uses his intellect to try to kill himself. He can’t be bothered with anything else, even breathing is an annoying task and a waste of effort and then…this happens:
Tumblr media
I’m not pointing this out as a soukoku shipper because this is not even a soukoku analysis, this is all about Dazai. People will always talk about Fifteen importance for chuuya, but fifteen was also fundamental in Dazai’s arc.
Cold and apathetic Dazai was literally kicked in the face by his biggest narrative foil. Chuuya who is loud, and ridiculously emotional, who can’t for the life of him hide his expressions, who is a terrible liar, impulsive, pathologically loyal to the point of idiocy, and so fucking full of vitality, so hungry for life. And so /unbearable human/. And then Dazai gets annoyed, and surprised, and out of nowhere he is screaming at the top of his lungs, showing /emotion/, he is curious, he is intrigued. He went from saying that breathing is such a hassle to fucking throwing a party and singing happily while he, in person, decorates, he even got a cake for fuck’s sake.
He doesn’t understand chuuya, he is curious about the sheep dynamics and as the story progresses we realize that this is probably the first time that Dazai fucks up, he failed to predict a situation, he didn’t saw it coming.
He wasn’t able to realize that Chuuya was Arahabaki, he didn’t even thought about that possibility. Because since the first moment, he never thought that chuuya could be something else than human. He didn’t saw Rimbaud coming because the idea of a person going that far for someone else? Is ridiculous, it doesn’t make sense, is illogical. It’s not how people are supposed to act.
“-So it’s all for your partner-Dazai said listlessly- Betraying the mafia, spreading rumors about the old boss’s resurrection, this fight we’re in now…it’s kind of hard to believe, to be honest
-Maybe for a slimeball like you it is- Chuuya scoffed. He looked up at Randou- Throwing everything away for your friends is a perfectly respectable reason to risk your life if you ask me”- Dazai and chuuya, fifteen years old. (Pause to scream about how much I love chuuya, help)
So basically every thing that happened in fifteen leads to this:
Tumblr media
And this guys, is one of the angular stones in Dazai’s development.
“The boy’s eyes were as clear as the sky on a sunny day; they lacked any shred of trepidation. This was not something earned, for only those determined to live could possess their heavenly blue sparkle”- about Dazai, fifteen.
This is the /only/ moment in the entirety of the series where Dazai not only doesn’t want to die, but that he /actively/ is looking towards life. The only moment in all bsd, Dazai is excited at the perspective of living. Fifteen is so important because this is the first time, Dazai’s view of life is challenged. Dazai was wrong. He made mistakes. People are not as predictable and boring as he thought. Dazai doesn’t suddenly start thinking that life has meaning, but he starts thinking that it /may/ exist, he just hasn’t found it yet.
This scene makes a radical switch in Dazai’s character because his primary goal changed from wanting to die to finding a reason to live.
In fifteen Dazai found hope, and everything that came after is possible because of this.
And it’s logical to an extent. He doesn’t understand life, but maybe if he understands death he can come closer to understand it. People always lie but when they are about to die? People become genuine, pretensions disappear, what do you cling to when you don’t have anything? When you’re dying, why do you keep fighting? If he can understand this, then maybe he can understand the sense in life. Maybe he can connect with his own desires and emotions. Maybe he can find his own reason to exist.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately this doesn’t last.
By stormbringer, Dazai falls into despair once again, he goes back to looking for his death.
“Dazai glanced back at him, perhaps amused by this, then he muttered as if he was talking to himself. -I couldn’t find anything in the end’- Dazai osamu, stormbringer
“It seems true that he wants to die. It seems that all the value standards of living reflected in his eyes are just as worthless and ugly as scrap iron”- Oda about Dazai, The day I picked up Dazai osamu side A, translated by poppopretty
For a long time, I thought that was the culmination of Dazai’s development as a character. He went from wanting to die to trying to find a reason to live, he struggles but he is trying.
I was wrong.
Chuuya solves his main conflict in stormbringer, Dazai doesn’t. To understand this, we need to understand that one the main themes in Bungou stray dogs is existentialism.
In simple (extremely simple) words existentialism can be defined as: “ the philosophical belief we are each responsible for creating purpose or meaning in our own lives”. Which means that in a way existentialism also understands that life can be meaningless, that maybe there’s not a big purpose in existence BUT that doesn’t have to mean that it has to stay that way. Existentialism defends that people can find their own purpose and maybe is not something big, it may be not life changing for others, but is something people cling to and that’s enough to give sense to the world. I will be talking more in depth about this in chuuya’s analysis but right now the important thing is to understand that this is not enough for Dazai.
He /needs/ a bigger purpose, a better answer, something objective and logical, something that can’t be debated. Because if it’s not, then Dazai’s genius mind will pick on that and he will once again be drown in desperation. Dazai needs an absolute answer.
Enter oda, the catalyst of Dazai’s next biggest arc as a character. But first let’s understand sixteen year old Dazai’s perspective of live, shall we?
“- you said it is foolish to die, right? So here is my question. If dying is foolish, then why do we have to die?
(…)
-So, you mean life is not something to regret?
-No, it is worse than that. Even though we are all promised death, from the beginning, all human beings were born with a present desire called “I don’t want to die”. This is also one hundred percent true. That is why, that desire will never be fulfilled”- The day I picked up Dazai Osamu, transplanted by poppypretty
So, to summarize Dazai can’t understand what’s the point in living if by the end there’s no real point in it. There’s nothing there, there’s not a reason to suffer so much because that’s what he is doing. He is suffering. He is all alone, feeling like an alien in a world of humans, just using a mask and trying to hide how really inhuman and empty he is behind all of that and for what? The world is senseless. Worse than that, there are not a lot of things he cares about but when he finds something worth preserving, he loses it. Dazai is in a horrible situation because his intelligence alienates him and isolates him from other people but it’s not enough to win against the senseless of life. He lives at edge, trying to predict and control everything to protect himself and the things important to him, he purposefully goes along with the alienation and isolates himself more thus going farther from his humanity, and at the end is worthless. Because it doesn’t matter how intelligent he is, is still not enough, he will never be able to control everything, he will never be able to predict everything with 100% of accuracy because life doesn’t work in that way, is all about chaos. And Dazai can’t deal with that.
Time passes, by eighteen years old, Dazai in a lot of ways gets worse. He is the “Demon prodigy” destructive, cruel, a master in torture and his mental state continues to get worse and worse but funnily enough he is still standing and that’s thanks to two things:
1) the hope he found at fifteen and never let him. Yes, Dazai goes back to wanting to die because life sometimes becomes unbearable but his goal is still to find a reason to live. And that didn’t changed.
2) his friends. Odasaku, Ango and Lupin bar are important things for Dazai. He is still lonely but it’s a little better
Tumblr media
Then everything goes to shit.
But I want you to understand this. After Oda decides to die, Dazai tries to stop him and this is what he says:
“-Find something to rely on. Expect good things to happen from here on out. There’s gotta be something…Hey Odasaku, do you know why I joined the mafia? (…) I joined the mafia because of an expectation I had. I thought if I was close to death and violence-close to people giving in to their urges and desires, then I would be able to see the inner nature of humankind up close. I thought if I did that…I would be able to find something-a reason to live”- Dazai Osamu, Dark era.
This is frankly tragic, because just as I said in previous analysis. Dazai’s worse trait, the real cause of all his suffering is his complete lack of self awareness. His main problem is not his lack of understanding of life, is the lack of understanding of himself. He thinks that understanding human at their most basic, desperate state will make him understand better humankind and that ultimately will make him closer to his humanity. But that’s not how it works. He can’t just watch from afar and expect that to be enough. Dazai needs to connect with himself, even the worse parts of himself, even the parts he doesn’t want to see instead of covering them up, he needs to let himself bond with other people, he needs to connect with his own emotions and desires. He needs to leave his overly complex ideas behind, to go down from the high horse he is in, to stop with the omniscient being act that aggravate his isolation and alienation, the things that ultimately make him perceive himself as something inhuman. He needs to accept that at the end of the day he is just human, just like the rest of the world and he is just as powerless as them.
Now let’s go to arguably Dazai’s most important scene as a character: Odasaku’s death
Tumblr media
People love to make this scene about soukoku and it’s fucking ridiculous.
People will take this scene and put it as evidence for the “Chuuya’s always the second choice” theory that they came up with (even if the whole theory is fucking ) but specifically this? Dazai leaving the mafia? Has nothing to do with chuuya. It’s part of his /individual/ character development and exactly what it should be.
Let’s start analyzing it
Dazai arrives and Oda is dying, he is desperate to save him even when he know is too late and the Odasaku says something. And this, this guys is what ultimately leads to Dazai’s character growth.
“-you told me if you put yourself in a world of violence and bloodshed, you might be able to find a reason to live (…) you won’t find it-Odasaku said in an almost whisper. Dazai stared at him- You should know that. Whether you’re on the side that takes lives or the side that saves them, nothing beyond your own expectations will happen. Nothing in this world can fill the hole that is your loneliness. You will wander the darkness for eternity”
“ That was when Dazai first realized: Sakunosuke oda understood him much more than he’d ever imagined- right up to his very heart, almost to the center of his mind. Dazai didn’t realize until then that someone had known him so well. For the first time in his life, Dazai wanted from the bottom oh his heart to know something. He asked the man before him:
-Odasaku, What should I do-“- Odasaku and Dazai osamu, Dark era
This is the most important scene for Dazai. He has always been lonely, he has always lived with the knowledge that it doesn’t matter how much he tries, no one will ever able to understand him but then just minutes before oda’s death he realizes he was wrong. To say that he left the mafia for oda is as inexact as saying that he decided to live for chuuya. It’s simply not true. He was heavily influenced by both of them but at the end of the day it was for himself.
“People live to save themselves”
I’ve say it before but this sentence is the core of bsd. If you want to analyze a character in this series, not matter who, you need to start by this quote. Dazai is not the exception to it.
He joined the mafia trying to find his own salvation, to get closer to his humanity, to find his reason for living, to find answers and he left because he realized it was useless. He always knew in a way, but he couldn’t bring himself to leave because this was his only chance, the mafia was his only hope, was the only thing he was clinging to. Even in his worst moments, Dazai still clung to the idea that he would find what he was looking for. But then, while dying oda talks to him and he realizes that there was someone who understood. Someone who knew about his pain, someone who understood his desperation, someone who looked through the mask and realized how utterly broken he was. And thing is, he failed, he tried the logical option and he found nothing but then maybe oda, oda who knows him best, oda who probably understands him better that he understand himself can tell him what to do. That’s why Dazai is so desperate in this scene, asking what to do. Because this is a new chance, there’s new hope. What Oda said might sound horrible but it was exactly what Dazai needed to hear and is the reason I was wrong.
Dazai doesn’t read as a character who went from wanting to die to wanting to find a reason to live.
Because to begin with, what Dazai was looking for was completely unreachable because it doesn’t exist. He can be looking for a reason to live all his life and he won’t find it because there’s not an absolute answer. There is not a bigger motive. The world really is senseless, that’s how it is. And Dazai needed to understand that. That’s why oda tells him to forget all about that silly hope. Because is useless.
“Be on the side that saves people. If both sides are the same, then choose to become a good person. Save the weak, protect the orphaned. You might not see a great difference between right and wrong, but…saving others is something just a bit more wonderful”- Oda Sakunosuke, dark era.
But that doesn’t mean than living is worthless
And this is how we come to Dazai’s real change as character. Dazai goes from nihilism, to a failed attempt of existentialism to absurdism.
Absurdism is the philosophical theory that existence in general is absurd, meaning that the world lacks meaning or a higher purpose. It also refers to the discrepancy between two things such as: the conflict as a colission between a rational man in an irrational world. In simple words, absurdism refers to the struggle of the man to find sense in a senseless world and we can see the mental impact of this struggle in the form of existential crises (yes, just like Dazai) Okay so I swear this made perfect sense in my own language, I’m gonna try as best as I can to explain it in English. Absurdism is different from existentialism because it doesn’t think that you can find a sense in the world, it really defends that not matter what you do, you will never find anything, that it doesn’t matter what you cling to in the great scheme of things it still means nothing, and in a way this need to find a sense in life will lead to more chaos BUT it also defends that you have to keep living despite that, maybe out of pure spite of it. Things doesn’t need to make sense to be worthy.
Absurdism says that there are three options to deal with this problem
Suicide: the pure desperation of trying to reach something that doesn’t exist will lead to the rejection of life. But this is not the correct answer (Cough, young Dazai, cough)
Religion: trying to cope, clinging to the idea that there’s a higher purpose. (Cough, Fyodor, Cough)
Rebellion against the absurd: which is the right answer, the individual needs to learn to accept the absurdity of the world and of his own existence but keep opposing to it. Which means, that the individual keeps living clinging to little things that may not have sense, but that are still worthy and valuable. In even simpler terms, absurdism says “do what you have to do to stop from killing yourself, not matter how stupid that thing is”
Cadmus explained it even better using this example:
You all know about Sisyphus, right? If not is basically this man that was punished by the gods. The punishment consisted of rolling a massive rock up a hill, but it doesn’t matter how hard he tried, at the end of the day, once the rock reached the top it would roll down again. So it was a completely senseless punishment. Not matter how Sisyphus tried he could never win against the absurdity of it. And this also happens with human lives, we do meaningless things all the time, knowing that at the end we will die. Not matter what we do, if we end up as vagabonds or if we find the cure against cancer, the result is still the same, we will all die, so everything we do in life is pointless. BUT Cadmus said that you still can’t give up. Because at the end, sisyphus needs to stop caring about something that he can’t change, the result will always be the same but the important thing is the instant of happiness when he comes close to finishing his job. The moment when the rock reaches the top? seconds before it rolls down, that satisfaction? Is what life is really about. And that’s exactly what Dazai is trying to do right now.
He won’t find sense in life, but being in the ADA is a little more beautiful and that alone is reason enough to be there. Maybe he is not a good person, maybe he doesn’t understand morals but he is with people he has come to appreciate in a better environment doing something that he enjoys more and that’s enough.
There’s this omake in bsd that shows a conversation between Atsushi and Dazai. And Atsushi asks Dazai, why he is in the ADA because someone as intelligent as Dazai can surely find a job with better pay, and Dazai looks at him and tell him that it’s true, but he is fine where he is because he likes to use his brain to help people. That guys, is absurdism right there, Dazai acknowledges that it may not makes sense but he likes what he does and that’s enough.
This change has been gradual and Dazai still struggles with it. He still has problems with the idea of letting things go, he still is a manipulative bastard and that will never change, because at this point is just a part of his personality, he still is trying to control everything but at the same time he also is ready to accept that sometime you just don’t have the answers and that’s part of humanity. This is one of my favorite panels on earth:
Tumblr media
Dazai is trying to convince kyouka of living, to choose to do something different from the things she’s good at, if that what makes her happy. This is one of the few scenes Dazai accepts that he is not omniscient, that there are no answers for all the questions, and that we are all a little lost because of it. This is also the first time Dazai is not in desperation while saying it. His growth is not about becoming a good person, he still does horrible things, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t changed. To accept that life is senseless but it still is worthy, to accept that he can’t control everything but the possibilities of it are not necessarily something to be afraid but opportunities? /That’s/ his character growth
This whole arc is a masterpiece because it highlights Dazai’s growth. He is against Fyodor, who in a lot of ways is just like him but at their core they are completely different.
Tumblr media
This hands down is my favorite Dazai’s panel because is all about his growth. Because he can see what Fyodor doesn’t. Fyodor see himself as a god, Dazai doesn’t because he knows that it doesn’t matter if they are pulling the strings, they are still isolated and alienated from everything, the people that really is moving the world is the one out there, the people that jumps even when they don’t know if they will be caught. The people that don’t know half of what they know but still are able to move in the middle of the uncertainty. And that’s something that neither Fyodor nor Dazai are able to do. But Dazai is no longer in pain because of that, he now understands the problem and is trying his best to overcome it. Dazai stopped resenting the world for being senseless and illogical and is learning to accept it and just adapt as best as he can to it. To give everything for the people he cares about even when there’s no guarantee that it will end well, but Dazai is trying and that’s what matters.
Tumblr media
I really wish I had the time to make a better analysis but I don’t. Even then, I wanted to share my pure love and admiration to this character. Dazai is so beautifully written and by far the most complex character in this whole story, all of his development as a character is simply fascinating and the way Asagiri is writing him right now has me screaming and running in circles.

Well dang. Talk about reaching on the parts of everyone who looked at Obi-Wan and Dex and thought "oh, that's obviously the exception to the Jedi rules!"
My understanding for the longest time has been that the "no attachments" rule is basically "think rationally when it comes to shit you end up caring about". Anakin Skywalker, Dagan Gera and Bode Akuna are cautionary tales about people who weren't able to do that.
It's not just "think rationally about the things you care about" to me, it goes a little deeper than that. All three characters you brought up have certain deep-seated fears and traumas that led to their inability to let go of something. Anakin lived the first nine years of his life as a slave, Bode went through Order 66, and Dagan dealt with the threat of the Nihil and that thing they were unleashing on the Jedi that was killing them in a horrific way with zero explanation.
The no attachments rule is about learning to recognize when your fears causes you to cling to the things you care about because you're too scared to lose them for one reason or another. No attachments is about recognizing when your fears are controlling you to the point that you're hurting other people and even yourself. No attachments is about understanding where this feeling comes from and being willing to face your fears head on rather than making excuses for your choices.
It's not just "think rationally" but "look deeper" and "really understand who you are and why you're reacting the way you are to things in your life" in order to even be ABLE to then think rationally.
The point of characters like Anakin, Dagan, and Bode is to see that they have really sympathetic reasons for why they get scared and react the way they do, you're supposed to relate to that fear on some level and recognize that the fear isn't entirely irrational to begin with. But their REACTIONS to the fear is what ends up irrational because they usually aren't willing to actually recognize that fear for what it is or they use the fear to justify causing pain to others. No attachments is asking people to make the harder choice.
There is no fear involved in Obi-Wan's relationship with Dex. Not that we ever see, anyway. No attachments obviously doesn't forbid emotions of any kind, it doesn't even forbid fear, or forbid ACTING on those emotions. No attachments just says to look deeper and understand yourself well enough that you can be ABLE to think rationally about your emotions and your reactions to them so that you don't cause harm inadvertently or let your fear control you to the point of becoming selfish and greedy. Obi-Wan's friendship with Dex has none of this, it appears to be a perfectly normal, healthy friendship. There's nothing in it that anybody in the Jedi Order would take issue with.

mind and heart are filled with thoughts of primo and secondo and terzo and copia... just like... them... like how they all internalized nihil's shit parenting...........
like how primo had to raise his brothers by himself because they deserved to have a loving childhood even if he didn't have one. like how he willingly took on all the responsibilities of raising a very young terzo and infant copia while dealing with a teenage/young adult secondo. like how he had to parent them from afar while he was touring, sometimes even bringing terzo and copia to be left in the care of a stage ghoul. like how he gave up his best years to single-handedly take care of them with little to no recognition. like how he attended every one of secondo and terzo’s performances during their papacy. like how he loved how strong and protective secondo became, yet hated his harshness and unkindness. like how he loved terzo's flamboyant and optimistic personality, yet hated how insecure it made him. like how he loved copia's dedication and tenacity, yet hated his fear of the world.
like how secondo only saw how much nihil looked down on him. like how he became bitter and miserable because he only focused on how little nihil loved him rather than how much primo loved him. like how he grew to hate and resent terzo because he could see how primo loved his younger brother but couldn't see that same love directed at himself since he thought he wasn't earning/deserving of it. like how he hated primo's touring and refused to join him because he'd rather choose to be alone than forced to be. like how he hated the idea of being ignored and passed off. like how secondo loved all of his brothers but didn't know how to show it because he was blinded by nihil's dislike. like how one time he lashed out at terzo, who then compared him to nihil and he "realized" just how much like his father he was, making him become colder to his brothers in order to "protect" them from his "bad genes." like how he was too afraid to commit to any relationships, platonic or romantic, because he thought he'd end up like nihil. like how he refused to have any children because he saw what it did to primo. like how proud he was of terzo's ascension/descension to papa but was too afraid to show it. like how he always defended and protected his brothers but didn't know how to truly show them the love they deserved.
like how terzo rarely batted an eye at nihil's dismissal because he knew he had primo's unconditional love and support. like how he felt the extremes of primo's selfless love and secondo's bitter resentment. like how the only reason he lasted as papa as long as he did was because primo and secondo stepped in to protect him from nihil. like how he grew up (and died) thinking that secondo hated him but never knew why. like how he always tried to be the perfect son for primo but had no idea what a "perfect" son would look like. like how he tried to dim his personality growing up so that primo would have less of "him" to worry about. like how insecure he was of himself because he was judged and ignored more often than not by those outside of his family circle.
like how copia loved all of his brothers since they were the only healthy family he had. like how the large age difference between him and primo (and secondo's lack of interest in raising a child) led him to lean on his mother and terzo more, which drove him apart from the older brothers. like how after primo, secondo, and terzo's deaths he received the full force of nihil's distaste after a lifetime of being shielded from it. like how he tries to channel his older brothers while performing but feels he can never live up to their standards. like how he clings onto his ghouls because they are the only family he has left. like how he tells them bedtime stories about his brothers and how much they cared and loved.
anywho.

I feel like Lincoln would wind up getting pretty into vaporwave as an aesthetic? Idk, it's the mix of surrealism and nostalgia and a pinch of nihilism and like, a healthy but noteworthy amount of dolphins. Yeah. Lincoln in vaporwave fashion, is mostly what I'm saying.

Hello, wondering how the Papa's would handle or comfort an s/o (during an episode) who has BPD. Thank you.
As someone with BPD, here ya go, anon. - Zenith/Jasper
Papas with s/o during BPD episode.
Primo
He knows you're having an episode before you do.
Can see the signs before hand, and immediately gets ready to help you with it, and is searching for your medication.
Gently tries to helps to work you out of it, and hugs you if it gets bad.
"I love you, Amore. No matter of your head, Si?"
Secondo
He gets it, He is bipolar after all.
Helps you in anyways that you prefer. Medication, self isolation, or a plethora of affection or words of encouragement. Anything you need.
Also calls in with your doctor to get you a higher dosage. Is with you the entire time.
"Chin up. You aren't alone. Got it?"
Terzo
He isn't bipolar, so he cannot completely understand, but damn does he try.
He'll get you anything you could need, and will help you with showering or eating, handing you your medications.
He'll read up on anything he needs too, and ask Omega for help of course, making sure to keep tabs on you. Doesn't fully understand how it works, but he tries.
"I am here, understand, Amore..?"
Copia
He also doesn't fully understand.
He tries super hard! Reads all the books, articles, and reads up on all the medications to see what would work best with you!
Is super attentive and looks out for any possible triggers you could have, and makes sure you never have to come in contact with them to the best of his ability.
Helping to remind you to take meds and too shower when needed.
"I am here, my love. And so is rigatoni!"
Old Nihil
At his age, he has a shit ton of mental issues that make him... somewhat passive when it comes to his mental capabilities, to put it gently.
He is absolutely in love with you, even if you have an episode and yell at him and say the worst things... he will just keep staring at you, completely in love.
He will try to cheer you up, offering whatever he can come up with.
Honestly, he's just so calm and in love it has 50/50 chance of making it worse of throwing you off completely.
Either way, he's with you no matter what. He loves you. And nothing can scare him off.
Young Nihil
Nihil might actually have undiagnosed BPD himself, which was sadly always swept under the rug by the Ministry.
So if you have an episode, he might have one too.
Sadly, unless you end up getting him a doctor and making him take meds, your relationship will not be very healthy.
It'd be very off and on unless you drag his ass to a psychiatrist.
And while he is oblivious about many things, he does eventually seem to learn what things may trigger an episode from you. You learn the same for him.
There's still a lot of struggle, but you slowly learn how to cope together.

do u think kenrome can come back from this 😭
honestly i think any sibling relationship with roman can come back from just about anything as long as the other sibling wants that relationship still. so long as rome’s the primary ‘wounded party’ or w/e, the relationship will probably return to ‘normal’ (not ‘heal’ but return to stagnancy). roman is a kicked dog who never leaves no matter how much he’s kicked, and really, that hasn’t changed. remember when ken betrayed the entire family and tried to kill logan in the s2 finale and then next season rome immediately comes to ken’s apartment with a gift of airport pastries he knows ken likes? i don’t think any of his family could ever hurt roman beyond reproach — i don’t think such a line exists for him. if it did, god knows it would’ve been crossed by at least a few of them by now. sure, he’s realized everything’s bullshit, but his nihilism does not negate his lifelong yearning for genuine connection, a yearning that’s intensified ten-fold when it comes to his family. he might know it’s bullshit now, he might think genuine connection is bullshit and waystar’s dead so they are too, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t still want it. honestly, a ‘healthy’ ‘free’ outcome for rome would probably be one in which he untethers himself from his family and only returns to them by choice rather than this sense of devotion and secretly embarrassingly love-fueled obligation, but that’s not how things end. he’s as haunted by logan, by waystar, as any of them. yeah, everything’s bullshit including waystar including them, but so long as he continues to view his family and the business as inextricable, he won’t be ‘free,’ not really. (i talk about that in this post a lot, so i’ll just link that so as not to broken record myself into infinity here lol.) i mean, he’s drinking gerri’s martini in the last shot. how bullshit are things really if he’s still consuming the remnants of his stand-in father/mother in his last scene? roman hasn’t changed, none of them have; that’s jesse’s entire thesis for the show. and so long as roman hasn’t changed, there is pretty much nothing that his siblings could do to lose him. the issue is that none of the siblings know how to interact with one another outside of the business, and honestly, i’m not sure if they’d even try to if not for roman who will inevitably awkwardly come around to ken’s place with pastries in a few days making sure he hasn’t killed himself yet. things won’t be good, and neither of them will know who to be or how to act or what it means to exist outside of waystar especially in terms of each other. but i do think this isn’t an end for them, largely, again, because there’s no end when it comes to roman. kick him as much as you want and watch him crawl back with a gift in his mouth. it might take him longer this time or it might be shrouded in even more irony and flippancy because he’s now newly convinced of the meaningless of their bonds, but that doesn’t change the fact that his love for them is real (as much as he might wish otherwise), and that he doesn’t want kendall dead. so i think there’s still something there, but not a good thing or a healed thing — it’s just roman continuing to lack a sense of worth or a sense of self. maybe things will get better, maybe they won’t, but i find it hard to imagine kendall and shiv ever really alienating roman for good unless they decide they no longer want him in their lives. so in that sense, i do think ken and rome will still have a relationship, but what form it takes (and if it can ever heal from the wounds not only of this fight but of the abuses that have always defined their relationship and will likely continue to) will be unclear even to them — what are they without waystar, after all?
