SPOILERS!!(idk how to do the see more thing so I’m doing this instead)
So I want to talk about Fionna’s world. When I first saw the trailer I knew that obviously things were dialed down for the other characters as well as Fionna. Like there’s no candy kingdom and Gary(eugh) isn’t super important politically in any way.
What I didn’t expect is that it’s not just that Fionna’s life is in the slumps. Everyone’s is. Based on the intro for episode 1, Gary and Marshall are going to be main characters as part of Fiona’s world.
Those two are also struggling like Fionna. Gary doesn’t run or own the bakery like I thought he would, he just works there and Butterscotch doesn’t let him be creative in creating ANYTHING even tho Fionna, Marshall, and LSP think his sweets are delicious.
Marshall also isn’t a part of a famous band or is well known and liked for his music; he’s just a street artist who’s unknown and barely getting by.
ALL of these previously successful and relatively happy characters are now boring and stuck just like Fionna is. Marshall and Gary may have excepted it, but they’re clearly not as good as their counterparts. Hell, we know they aren’t even now because we see how happy PB and Marceline are in Simons universe.
As people have pointed out when the trailer dropped, a lot of things in Fionna’s world are messed up. The buildings don’t line up, the sidewalks don’t line up, cones are upside down and it seems wrong. Clearly something happened to Fionna’s world that messed up everything and left everyone miserable. The other characters also have dreams about their Adventure Time counterparts, but Fionna is the only one who is actively against living the life she is.
I’m really interested in learning what created Fionna’s world all wrong. I think it has something to do with Betty leaving but I’m not positive as there hasn’t been a lot of facts yet.
Edit: Omg wait what if, since Ice King created Fionna and Cake, him turning back into normal human Simon made everyone else normal and human. But before they were the magical counterparts and so bc they changed to reflect the state of Simon, it messed up their original world.
My recent Hobbit hyperfixation has culminated in me writing a Hobbit/LOTR college au of questionable quality. Whether I continue it remains to be seen, but for now enjoy whatever this is.
Edit: there are lil offshoots to this now! 1 2 3 4 5
Also if you like this pls reblog it, it helps way more than likes! I'm pretty sure I turned reblogs back on
I except nothing less. Taigen is allowed IF AND ONLY IF he mans the fuck up, doesn’t get butthurt over Mizu and grows.
Akemi and Mizu, if they get a man, need a real man, not a man child clinging to falsities his daddy and master told him. He’s obnoxious. He’s a good, loyal but annoying friend at best as it stands. They’re not compatible romantically/sexually (if memory serves, the flashbacks of nonexistent dick Mikio overlapped w her time w Taigen/some scenes that could be read as romantic, a man who caused her great hurt who made it so she’ll likely need a LOT to be able to be vulnerable w a man ever again), neither is he with Akemi anymore. I’m hoping the overlap was just there to show her starting to think about it or as a weird red herring for his bi/gay awakening. He could get someone else in S2, who knows. As S1 is, they don’t deserve each other. The throuple. Mizu and Akemi as a pair with some more development, but not w him.
Takayoshi, however, has shown that he can be understanding and he should be a trained swordsman. He didn’t seem to mind allowing Akemi to lead and there’s a big hint that she’ll be the “pants wearer” of the relationship going forward. I think Akemi’s moved on from Taigen, maybe not realizing it but has, and Taka also has a pretty significant “fault” being his stutter.
I just see more potential with Taka not Tai.
Having throuple representation would be incredible regardless!
But bringing in a new character for it could also really work. Like a gentle lady Mizu finds in England—oh, that’s an idea…👀👀 no I have enough fanfic wips damnit. She could free someone from a work house or mine!
Not to be dramatic but since hiori is blasian in canon I need black x readers asap🗣️ like we are DEF not getting any cultural background on this kid (because they just slid it in there like we weren’t gonna recognize in the first place)not that we have any background on any of these children’s parents but I think he should explain how he feels being mixed in Japan because it’s just really funny having these two in the exact same anime, and they are both black
This is ABSOLUTELY hilarious 😭
Edit: so I’ve noticed a pattern of EVERY character looking like their mother and barely sharing any resemblance to their fathers so ig he gets a pass for being pale BUT there’s even more melaninated characters so let’s give him some sun too!!🥺
It’s funny how much handwringing there is in even queer spaces over how HARD it is to write characters as aromantic, esp in fantasy or period piece settings where “they don’t have that term so aro characters cant exist!!”, when in 1891 we got:
It was not that [Holmes] felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind.
This post by mikesbasementbeets is still on my heart. I’ve been stuck on Mike trying to connect with El about being bullied—
—and he gets shut down with “No. You don’t.”
Mike didn’t defend his experiences.
El was hurting, yes, and for many good reasons (one being her failing relationship with Mike), but she did invalidate him. She was there in s1 to see some of the bullying Mike (and by extension Will, Dustin, and Lucas) went through and even took action when she recognized Troy and his friend were awful people. El humiliated Troy in the gymnasium, prevented Mike from falling off a cliff prompted by Troy, and even proceeded to break Troy’s arm afterward.
El didn’t understand what the bullying was about then, but she was well-aware that these ‘mouth-breathers’ weren’t good and opposed them. She knows what bullying is. The writers could’ve had El reference this, as Mike did with “you’ve seen it” because that was clearly meant to open a communicative door to relate. They could’ve had her say that she understands and knows Mike went through bullying that hurt him too (and put him in fatal danger) while also expressing her personal frustrations (‘From Mike’ and the way he views her included), but this didn’t happen. To push it further, she also says “I am different.” On one hand, yeah. She is different. She wasn’t the average little girl with an average living environment. She’s not at all the average teenager either. She’s trying to catch up and have normal experiences. More than understandably, it’s upsetting and frustrating for her that she isn’t.
But this invalidation—“No. You don’t.”—is feeding the part of Mike that tells him he is inferior/ lesser than. What does he say to Will in the van? That he’s worried El will realize he’s just some random nerd who got lucky that Superman got dropped on his doorstep. Mike belittled himself there. Him expressing this to Will obviously shows he feels comfortable confiding those insecurities in him. It shows the obvious contrast as to why Mike didn’t further comment about his own experiences with El too. It also shows Mike’s view on himself. El is still on a pedestal in his mind, and, to himself, he is far beneath her. He may have confided his insecurities to Will, but he is still belittling himself (and very heavily differentiating himself from El) at the same time. By doing so, by making himself insignificant in comparison to El, Mike is invalidating himself. In comparison, he thinks his own traumas are lesser than.
it’s time to overanalyze the impala destruction scene <3 with actual screencaps this time. my analysis of the shot will be Above the screencap. hopefully that makes sense
so sam tries once again to talk to dean about dad. dean yells at him again for suddenly wanting to do what dad would’ve wanted and sam opens up to him about feeling guilty. then sam says he’s dealing with dads death, but dean isn’t. dean doesn’t say anything, just looks at him like This.
we don’t know yet, what john said to dean before he died. but it’s hanging over dean. i think sam’s reaction to dad’s death makes dean want to keep johns words a secret even more. if he tells sam that’s what dad wanted, sam might go along with it.
every time someone brings up john, dean hears his words again, and he feels even worse. he can’t deal with dads death because that means acknowledging what he said, and it’s just too much. he already lost dad, he can’t lose sam too.
sam says “i’ll leave you alone.” and walks away. we only hear a few steps, but that might just be for clarity. who knows. or he just. took a few steps then stopped.
either way, dean turns around and calmly picks up a crowbar. he smashes the window of a random car. takes a few breaths.
as he turns around, he looks up from the ground. looks at something in front of him. it seems for a second like he’s going to stop.
then he looks down at the impala. he glances back up, just for a second. right where sam was standing before. it looks like he’s making sure sam is watching him. you want me to deal with it? fine.
“next time someone asks me if i’m okay, i’m gonna start throwing punches.”
so he goes crazy on the impala. we all know that part.
he destroys the car right after he fixes it. specifically the trunk of the car, where they keep their hunting arsenal. maybe that was just the closest part, or maybe he’s had enough of his family dying because of hunting. he didn’t want to find the demon if it meant sam would die, but now sam might die anyway. no matter what he does, the car/his family will be destroyed. he can’t fix it, and it’s futile to even try. all his work, all the time and love he put into sam might have been worthless.
when he finally stops, he looks wrecked. this is the most emotion he’s allowed himself since dad died.
this is the last shot of the episode. him staring for a good 10 seconds, still on that same eyeline. he seems like he’s looking at something.
he lets himself look sad for a second, but he doesn’t turn away like he normally would. he wants sam to see. this was all for him. it’s like… there. i’m upset. was that enough? can you stop asking now?
then his expression hardens, shutting down and covering his emotions again. it’s like he’s warning sam. dean can’t be sad, only angry. only destructive. this time, it’s the car. next time, it might be sam. the two things he’s supposed to look after, both ruined. and dad isn’t here to fix it. dean has to figure it out on his own.
it looks like he’s asking sam to just leave it alone. don’t ask me about this. i can’t talk about it. and for now, sam believes it’s just about dad dying.
and then the episode ends. i genuinely cannot tell if im supposed to think sam is there or not. but like its the same eyeline!!! and the shot is pushed in and to the right!! sam could be standing in the same spot for all we know !! also what else would he be having a silent convo with in bobby’s junkyard? the dog? his own reflection? the only thing that makes sense to me is that sam is there. that he’s doing this For sam. maybe this is something everyone noticed but me until rn but. im going insane
Love the dynamic of ritsu unexplainably hating reigens guts and hurling the most nasty edge-lord teenagery angsty zingers whenever they do as much as make eye contact….but despite being as petty as he is, reigen just flat out refuses to argue with a child
the writers putting a song with lyrics like ‘i don’t know where i belong’, ‘if i make it home when our worlds collide’, ‘help me find my way ‘cause i’ve been feeling so lost and afraid’, etc in the background of the scene where theo makes it clear liam has voluntarily chosen to ask for his help and starts offering insight into liam’s emotions— specifically his anger and how it’s really just a manifestation of fear— is so crazy like. you paired a song literally called NOBODY KNOWS with a conversation about how they feel and how liam wanted theo to be the person who came with him when he was worried about getting out of control. but i wasn’t supposed to read into any homoerotic subtext. oh Okay.
