The Interviewer
issue x of The Grazing Corner. example of what future interviews may look like. Interviewer Jonnie Diaz, interviewing Jonnie Chivo Goat Sauce Diaz
Jonnie Chivo Goat Sauce Diaz. What makes you qualified to ask the world for an interview. Oh wow, that is a dramatic statement. I am not qualified by any institution but by my curious nature. I would say that in the past years, I could call myself shy due to social anxiety which didn’t go away… I just happened to unlock some confidence I already had. I was always worried about presenting myself…

i do think its kinda funny when i see someone in the year of our lord 2024 talk about vocal synth music like its all gone downhill since like 2010 because like dont get me wrong i love a good niconicodouga-ass 2008 ass vocaloid joint BUT also like. the past couple years have had the most fascinatingly creative and expressive uses of vocal synthesizers ive ever heard in my life DJFSKHJDFS dont write it all off just yet!!
#usually i only see that from people who havent actually listened to any vsynth music from the past 15 years so i understand why they got to#that conclusion. and also usually theyre people who didnt listen to much vsynth music in the first place LOL they just dont know#but it is still a little funny. brother there are things beyond your wildest dreams if u just look#like some personal highlights: the stuff by rinri - particularly their use of the meika girlies#dont carry our memories away is LIFECHANGING the whispers. the spoken parts. the BELTS#plus the haunting and unrelenting instrumentation. fantastic song#and naisho no pierced's propose + birthday + gift sort of trilogy of songs. gift especially has been unreal#again the dynamics of soft intimate whispers to belts but also those fuller high notes with edges of growlyness.#plus the songs just generally rock. and those LYRICS. absolutely intense like physically painful and frightening like#yearning and codependency and possession. and the tuning and production just amps it up more#OH and slave.v.v.r has been doing crazy things for even longer but i only started getting into his stuff recently and holy shit#love eater is like. the scariest vocaloid song ive ever heard not because of the lyrics. but because of the tuning#im like. scared. i cant stop listening to it. the heavy synthesized breathy main vocals and whispered harmonies plus the VOCAL FRY#i didnt realized vocaloid5? i think? has a vocal fry option built in i heard? thats crazy#but specifically in love eater the fry and growl is amped up so deep and loud and clear compared to everything else it like#emphasizes the artificiality of the voice while also amping up the expressiveness#its awesome. and on the older slave.v.v.r songs i heard i will hit you 8759632145 times with this piano. also so fucking cool#addicted to that song. 1) its a great jazzy rocky piano tune with this piano flourish at the end of each phrase that sounds fantastic#but also 2) the lyrics are insane. using kanji to write english??????#people are doing wild ass things with vocal synths rn you guys#this isnt even getting into some of the really unique synths themselves too. adachi rei is awesome i love that shes just like#the perfect inbetween of sample based and reconstruction based vocals. shes a sample based synth#but her samples were drawn by hand LOL shes like dectalks granddaughter to me.....#a really good use of adachi rei is iyowa's heat abnormal/heat anomaly/whatever its called ITS AWESOME thats what it is hjrkfdgfd#i think the fact that vocal synths can be so realistic and clean and noiseless out the gate now has made people really stop worrying#about like. realism all together and looking more into expressiveness. omg vocal synth modernist movement

Twilight Dreams and Reality's Embrace: A Tale of Harmony #blogaberrycc #MagicalRealism #DreamVsReality #FantasyAdventure #TwilightTown #MoonlitBloom #PersonalGrowth #DualProtagonists #HarmonyInContrast #MagicalForest
In the heart of a world where the mundane intertwined with the miraculous, there existed a town that never fully embraced the dawn. The sun would peek over the horizon, casting a gentle glow over the houses, yet the streets remained shrouded in twilight. It was in this twilight that our tale unfolds, between Lucian, the dreamer, whose visions danced on the edge of reality, and Val, the skeptic,…

Dear Murray,
I have been unable to reply any sooner to your last letter which reached me quite some time ago. [8] I have read it twenty times. [3] There is too much irony in it, it is too knowing to be serious. [5] There is still much I don't even begin to understand, but for seven days, the bits have been clumping together into a vague picture. [7] I don't see how this could work [9]. I don't like it.[7]
Your plan contains a central tower a central observation post [10],giving you a stage to ‘talk’, with not only Venetian blinds on the windows of the central observation hall, but, on the inside, partitions that intersected the hall at right angles and, in order to pass from one quarter to the other, not doors but zig zag openings; for the slightest noise, a gleam of light, a brightness in a half opened door would betray the presence of the comedian, you[11] I wonder will you allow us totalk. [13] With you every statement is converted to a rhetorical question. [5] Always talking, never giving, staying in a good position in irreversible logic. [12] This device, by itself, politicises talking,[5] it automatizes and disindividualizes power [11]
What goals are such systems designed to achieve?[14] It’s not just you; nobody, appears to know exactly what anyone else is talking about, the terms of discussion having become either too generic or too divergent to achieve any mutual understanding. [15] People talk about you a bit: forget you. [13] They wonder if they should talk any, or talk the whole time, or what to talk about.[16]Our mind cannot embrace many objects or many situations at the same time. [17] What if there is no word, real or fabricated, which will accomplish that? [18] What will you do then?
I'm afraid I don't quite understand what all this talk of “issues" is about. [18] We know how greatly laws are disregarded during war, when all things are under the control of violence rather than reason [19] War and chaos there might have been, but these were hardly new phenomena in the recent history. [20] The body, the statue, our knowledges or memories, libraries or cenotaphs: all imprison the phantom by denying its existence. [21] lt is far easier for us to imagine chaos than the proper proportions of the universe. [17] Talking ,in this case, is just pointless. Words to put you to sleep, wine to put you to sleep, words and wine to put the tragic and comic of existence to sleep. No bread for the poor, no love for the men, no wine for the feasts, nothing, always nothing, wind, nothing but wind. [ 22]
In your letter you say: I executed this project slowly, and at different times, but with as much application and care as I was capable of employing, being fully persuaded that the repose of my life and future happiness depended on it. [3]
So I would like to know if you have any clarifications on this point, because this is what I'm thinking: [23]Happiness without glass   how stupid is that![24]
I believe that the mystery which defeats me is a mockery, a joke, that is played on me.[25] Verily, you comedians are the most pleasant people in point of tongue and the subtlest in jest, and this is but a joke of thine; but all times are not good for funning and jesting.[26]
You’re such fun, always joking, you’re so clever at it, nothing that you thought was serious ever seems to be when you’re around, and yet you're a very serious man. [27] However, it remains questionable whether you, for your part, can really be serious about the antithesis to it: "to mean it seriously.” [28]
Just a little heart to heart talk.[13]This friend, in whose company you are jesting, is in fear. [29]I see your peace of mind is in danger…For a condemned man, a mask is not a mask, it is a shelter. [2] It’s an obsession with you, it isn’t natural that you should always be talking about it. [30]
I know, you won’t listen. I know you’ll do exactly as you please and write it off as a joke. If you’re going to talk, then talk so we can hear you! Talk about centralisation! [25] Talk about superfluous overpackaging! [30]Talk of mysteries! [32] Talk about an irresistible offer! [16]Talk about apple dumplings, piuttosto. All a kind of attempt to talk. Talk: as if that would mend matters. [13] But don’t you dare make me a part of it!

Only because I have a very complex PTSD A little less than a year since I first crafted this piece of work and wrote the title, and first two lines of this blog. When it comes to broppy relationship in the movies, I think trolls world tour is the weakest in that department.
First movie broppy has this sort of implied history. Poppy has apparently tried to befriend branch for a long time, and even after everyone has given up on him, poppy still treat him warmly. And we know that despite his rude and cruel behavior, branch did apreciate it deep down. It's easy to imagine that they got to know each other a little bit and one of the reason why poppy is still trying to be his friend is because branch showed her a part of himself that he hide to everyone else. What poppy say in the last movie, "I've been by your side from the moment we meet. And you've been by mine! " seems to confirm this. Even if you ignore this headcanons, their contracting personalities and the way they bounce off each other, coupled with the progressing tenderness of their relationship make for a really cute and compelling dynamic.
Then the second movie roll around, branch's feelings are comfirmed but there's something wrong. Here's the thing. The progression of their relationship is entirely on branch's side. We never get a hint of what poppy think of branch. It's all about branch and her feelings for her. I know poppy is supposed to be very self-absorbed and it's something she has to learn from but her feelings for branch just seems kind of hollow when she only acknowledge him to dismiss his worries and criticize him. She just has this realization after their fight that doesn't feel earned at all. Poppy reciprocating branch's feelings *doesn't feel earned at all *.
Tumblr media
But then, trolls holiday in harmony came out, and this year, trolls band together. We get to see how our trolls behave as a couple.
And it's so
Tumblr media
Fucking
Tumblr media
Cute
Tumblr media
They bounce off each other like before but in a much more softer way. Branch gently calm down poppy when she's over ecstatic. Branch's realism balance out poppy's optimism. Even with poppy's mind going all over the place, she pay attention to branch and you have the feeling that she's helping him through trauma and gaining self esteem. Poppy prioritize branch feelings and branch adore poppy for her energy and infectious happiness. It feels like a natural progression of their first movie self, with a much softer branch.
Speaking of branch, I think that's the reason why their dynamic in the second movie was so off. Branch wasn't the sarcastic grump anymore and the writers struggled to find their dynamic. Well, I think they nailed it now. He isn't the grump to her sunshine anymore, he's the calm romantic to her hyperactive affection.

I’ve been reading some craft books and online posts about the world building because my story is an urban fantasy set in present day US, in a fictional town, and theres not a secondary world where the fantasy happens, it’s all in the real world, except the magic is a secret that only certain people know about, but all of the resources I find about world building only talk about fantastical worlds that exist by themselves and not the kind of more subtle world building that I’d have to do. Do you have any tips?
Worldbuilding for urban fantasy is the perfect opportunity to explore the mix of the mundane and the magical. It involves crafting a universe where the impossible becomes possible, yet is grounded within the familiar settings of our own world. This requires a delicate balance—immersing readers in the fantastical without breaking the spell of believability. Here are some essential tips on worldbuilding for urban fantasy writers.
Understanding urban fantasy
Before delving into building your urban fantasy world, it’s crucial to understand what sets this subgenre apart from other forms of fantasy.
Recognise the defining traits of urban fantasy, which typically include a contemporary setting combined with supernatural elements.
Familiarise yourself with the genre’s common tropes and themes, like hidden magical societies, the coexistence of magical and non-magical beings, and the contrast between the ordinary and the extraordinary.
Critically read successful urban fantasy novels to see how other authors have balanced the real and the fantastical.
Consider reader expectations for the genre, and the flexibility it has for innovation and subversion of norms.
Determine the tone and mood you want for your setting, as this will influence all other aspects of your worldbuilding.
Creating your magical systems
The magical systems in your urban fantasy will offer a unique flavour to your world, determining the capabilities of your characters and the challenges they face.
Where does the magic in your world come from—is it drawn from nature, ancient artefacts, parallel dimensions, or something else?
Decide if magic is commonly known or if it’s a secret kept from the general populace. If it’s a secret, why? And what are the consequences if it becomes known?
Develop the limitations and costs of magic, as these constraints can drive conflict and plot development.
Invent magical organisations, guilds, or societies, detailing their roles, influence, and how they operate in your story world.
Create distinct magical phenomena that occur within your urban setting, which can become landmarks or points of interest in your narrative.
Consider how technology and magic interact; do they coexist harmoniously, or are they in constant contention?
Creating realism in your urban setting
Realism in urban fantasy is about making the reader recognise and connect with the world you have created as something that is both other and familiar.
Include lots of real-world details, including accurate descriptions of city life, technology, and culture. Make sure you research for accuracy.
Use sensory details to make the urban environment come alive—smells, sounds, textures, and tastes that the reader can relate to.
Include social and political issues that resonate with contemporary society, allowing readers to draw parallels with their own experiences.
Develop a diverse cast of characters whose life experiences and backgrounds reflect the complexity of a modern urban society.
Integrate authentic dialogue that mirrors the way people communicate in modern life, including local slang and mannerisms, both real-world accurate and unique to your setting.
Consider the logistics of an urban environment, like transportation, law enforcement, and the economy, and how these are affected by the presence of magic.
Character development in an urban fantasy
Characters are the heart of your story, and the way they react to fantasy elements in their real-world environments will drive a lot of your narrative.
Create protagonists and antagonists whose motivations are shaped by the intersection of the real and the magical in their lives.
Develop backstories for your characters that explain their relationship to the urban setting and the magical elements within it.
Design character arcs that reflect the challenges and growth that come with living in a world where fantasy is reality.
Introduce secondary characters that highlight the diversity of the urban fantasy landscape, from magical creatures to human allies and adversaries.
Explore the psychological impact of a dual-world existence on your characters, including the strain of keeping secrets and the wonder of discovering magic.
Use character relationships to explore the nuances and complexities of your urban fantasy world.
Plotting your urban fantasy
Your plot is the vehicle through which readers experience your story world. Urban fantasy requires careful attention to pacing to give both elements equal weight.
Construct a plot that intertwines the urban and the fantastical, using the unique aspects of your setting to drive the story forward, rather than relying on the mundane.
Introduce conflicts that arise from the overlap of the magical and the mundane, be they societal, personal, or existential.
Use the setting itself as a character, with its own moods, secrets, and evolving role in the narrative.
Create set pieces that showcase the extraordinary within the ordinary—magical battles on the rooftops, secret meetings in subways, or enchanted parks hidden in plain sight.
Develop a pace that balances the exploration of your urban world with the unfolding of magical elements and plot progression.
Consider the use of multiple viewpoints to give a broader perspective on how the urban fantasy elements affect different characters and society at large.
Blending the real and magical
The key to urban fantasy is making the reader believe that magic could exist in their own world, interwoven with the everyday.
Introduce the fantastic elements gradually, allowing the real world to serve as an anchor for the reader’s suspension of disbelief.
Develop a set of rules for how magic operates in your world to maintain consistency and a sense of order.
Use recognisable landmarks and urban elements as grounding points, then twist them with your fantasy elements.
Establish the history of magic in your world and how (or if) it has shaped society and its infrastructure.
Consider the impact of magical events or beings on the everyday lives of both your characters and the city’s unsuspecting inhabitants.
Intertwine the real and the fantastic so that they feel inseparable, each substantiating the other’s existence.

ANURADHA
Anuradha, the 17th nakshatra in Vedic astrology, is a constellation marked by depth and nuance. Influenced by the stern but grounding Saturn and the benevolent deity Mitra (friendship), people born under Anuradha navigate life with a blend of practicality and idealism.
A core strength of Anuradha natives is their talent for building strong relationships. They value loyalty, honesty, and fairness, fostering a sense of harmony within their social circles. Their diplomatic nature makes them adept at bridging divides and creating a sense of unity.
Tumblr media
However, this desire for connection can mask a deep well of emotional sensitivity. While they project a composed exterior, Anuradha individuals can be quite attuned to the feelings of others, sometimes to their own detriment. This can lead to a tendency to be overly invested in relationships, requiring them to develop healthy boundaries.
The influence of Saturn brings a dose of realism. Anuradha natives may face challenges and setbacks early on, but they are equipped with remarkable resilience. This perseverance allows them to overcome obstacles and find solace in self-discovery, often through intellectual pursuits or spiritual exploration.
Tumblr media
Anuradha's symbol, the staff, hints at their potential for wielding knowledge and navigating complexities. They may have a natural curiosity about occult subjects or hidden patterns. This, combined with a logical mind, can make them skilled researchers or analysts.
Their inherent empathy allows them to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, making them valuable friends and colleagues. However, their sensitivity can leave them vulnerable to emotional overload. Their inherent selectiveness in choosing friends underscores their awareness of this vulnerability and (hopefully) allows them some measure of protection.
Ultimately, Anuradha is a nakshatra of transformation. With their unwavering dedication, empathetic nature, and thirst for knowledge, Anuradha individuals have the potential to become charismatic leaders who champion social causes. Theirs is a journey of uncovering the hidden light within and a testament to the potential for growth that exists even in the most obscure places - just like their symbol, the lotus, that blooms from muddy waters.

Rewind the Tape —Episode 2
Art of the episode
Just like we did for the pilot, we took note of the art shown and mentioned in the second episode while we rewatched it, and we are sharing our findings with you. Did we miss any? Can you help us put a name to the unidentified ones? Do you have any thoughts about how these references could be interpreted?
Tumblr media
Unnamed painting by Marius de Romanus
Created for the show (uncredited artist).
Armand (still "Rashid") tells Daniel that Marius was a contemporary of Tintoretto (1518-1594).
Tumblr media
Transformation
Ron Bechet, 2021 [Identified by Gizmodo's Linda Codega, here.]
Bechet is a New Orleans-born visual artist. He's a relative of the early jazz pioneer Sidney Bechet. Exhibition Prospect.5 says about the collection this piece belongs to: "Bechet carefully renders the ways vines wrap themselves around trees for support and access to sunlight. At times, this relationship serves both the vine and the tree. Works such as Transformation depict a harmonious symbiosis, as tree and vine both flourish. (...) Through his immersive compositions, Bechet invites us to see history and ourselves in relationship to the beauty, power, and violence of the natural world." And, from Xula Gallery: "Here, we are gifted with the physical proximity of life and death – How they share the same organic space, how they sleep together as equals. The flora of South Louisiana's natural landscape is cleaved open to expose its roots. (...) Here is botany that has every potential of becoming monstrous. All of these meanderings are used to symbolize the deep historical roots of a family home and exhibits the precariousness of nature, both human and environmental, with all of its nurturing and destructive potential. (...) It is a diaspora body, skin folded back to reveal its elegant and resilient backbone."
Untitled photographs
Vivian Maier, undated
Tumblr media
Maier was a street photographer whose work was discovered and distributed after her death —she took more than 150,000 photographs during her life, and never printed or circulated any. You can learn more about how her work came to light here. We don't actually see the self-portrait in the third picture, which hangs to the left, until episode four.
Tumblr media
Dancers
Edgar Degas, 1899 [Identified by @nicodelenfent, here.]
Degas produced countless paintings of ballerinas throughout his career. While he is often considered an impressionist, he himself saw himself more as a realist and preferred harsh gritty subjects of working class backgrounds. Ballerinas at the time often came from working class or poor families and worked intense grueling hours.
Berthe Morisot with a Fan
Edouard Manet, 1872 [Identified by @nicodelenfent.]
Manet was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, as well as a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. The portrait in this scene shows his close friend, painter Berthe Morisot, wearing mourning blacks after the death of her father, but wearing a wedding ring —she was engaged to Manet's brother.
Tumblr media
Portrait of Erich Lederer
Egon Schiele, 1912 [Identified by @nicodelenfent.]
The Schiele depicts a young Erich Lederer, son of art collectors Serena and August Lederer, whose collection was looted by the Gestapo.
Paddy Flannigan
George Bellows, 1908 [Identified by @nicodelenfent.]
The Bellows depicts a young impoverished boy on the streets of New York.
Tumblr media
A Doll's House
Henrik Ibsen, 1879
Lestat tells Louis "They'll seat us late, and we'll miss Nora's entrance with the Christmas tree," which quite a few fans soon identified as a reference to this play, in which a housewife becomes slowly disillusioned with marital life and eventually leaves her husband. This conclusion led to the play being banned in certain countries, such as Germany and Britain, and Ibsen was compelled to write an alternative ending, in which Nora's husband forced her to stay. In the two stage productions pictured above, you can see Kelsey Brennan and Nate Burger on the left, and Assad Zaman and Anjana Vasan on the right.
Tumblr media
Unnamed paintings of Papa du Lac and Paul
Created for the show (uncredited artist).
Tumblr media
Unidentified painting*
* The running theory is that the woman in this painting is Gabrielle, Lestat's mother; which would mean this is another uncredited prop painted for the show.
Tumblr media
Woman in A Fur Coat
Edouard Manet, 1879
Additionally, on the bottom left corner of the frame you can catch a glimpse of another unidentified painting, but we couldn't get any clearer looks of it either.
Tumblr media
Autumn at Arkville
Alexander H. Wyant, 1909 [Identified by @vfevermillion.]
The one in the mirror and the one on the other side of the door are too blurry, but we managed to place the one on top of the couch!
Tumblr media
The Lone Tenement
George Bellows, 1909 [Identified by @nicodelenfent.]
The National Gallery of Art says about this painting: "Bellows has imbued the composition with a sense of eerie wistfulness, recording the precarious positions of those who were being displaced to make way for the future."
Tumblr media
Don Pascuale
Gaetano Donizetti, 1842
