Okay Burrow's End had me thinking some thoughts... So here are my favorite Dimension 20 moments that rotate like a rotisserie chicken in my brain (in no particular order other than the order I thought if them).

- Riz goes into the butthole of the Corn Ooze Monster (Fantasy High). The first absolutely insane shenanigans move anyone makes on D20, setting the tone the show will have forever.

- Raphaniel kills Queen Pamelia (Ravening War). I think I saw Brennan's soul leave his body briefly when he got that How Do You Want To Do This from Matt. Time was an absolute flat circle that day.

- Hank convinces Brennan to let him role savvy instead of sneak (Mentopolis). Hank is one of the most famous content creators, having him on the show was phenomenal to begin with. Then right out of the gate, he pulls this move in his first episode. And it just works. Hilarious, instantly iconic.

- Jet Dies (A Crown of Candy). When Lapin dies, it is shocking but I wasn't attached to him as a character. Lapin was a bit antagonistic and his death happens early in the season. On the other hand, Jet is instantly likeable. Emily and Siobhan are amazing as siblings, their performances this campaign are some of my favorites. I have siblings and I am very close to them, so this hit me like a ton of bricks.

- The entire epilogue of Burrow's End. "Are you pitching and Air Bud ending?" is one of the instant hall of fame quotes from this show. I started crying I was laughing so hard.

- Ylfa's bottleneck and the TPK (Neverafter). There are so many close calls for total party kills in Dimension 20 history, but this is where it finally happens and it's only 3 episodes in. I was on edge, expecting another TPK at any turn, for the rest of the campaign.

- 3 nat one initiative rolls for the battle that literally opens the season (A Starstruck Odyssey). The beginning of a new season is always full of excitement. This season was extra special, having everyone back in the dome after the pandemic and the season being based off Brennan's Mom's comics. The zoom energy is still in the air and I still think about this season opener a lot.

- Mother Timothy Goose breaks Snow White's concentration with a cantrip (Neverafter). Only Ally Beardsley could and we all damn well know it. Still didn't stop me from being so far in disbelief that all I could do is laugh.

- Hob's "You will never know another lonely day" speech to Rue (A Court of Fey and Flowers). I will still cry about this if I think about it for too long. Rue and Hob's romance is the heart of this season to me. I won't be over it ever.

- Gertrude convinces Nyruth to give the Questing Queens very powerful boons after the Queens tried to rob them only a few hours earlier (Dungeons and Drag Queens). The fact that this season exists drives a level of serotonin into my brain that is unimaginable. This is the definition of a big swing and when Bob rolls well, Brennan has no other choice than to honor it. This is one of the moments I have made a meme of. I cannot wait for season 2.

- Wuuvy shows up to the duel and she did not come to play (A Court of Fey and Flowers). Aabria has talked about how Wuuvy is one of her favorite NPCs and I feel the same. Wuuvy and Rue's relationship has such a great arc and this moment is so pivotal.

- Fabian's no good very bad day (Fantasy High Sophomore Year). An iconic moment in D20 history that was truly wild to watch live. For everything to go so fantastically bad for Fabian and Lou was unprecedented. There is a reason why people still talk about this moment to this day.

- Amathar survives being pushed off the castle (A Crown of Candy). Brennan tried to kill Lou so many times in this campaign. I really thought Brennan had gotten him with this one, my stomach sunk. But Lou pulls it out and Amathar lives once again.

- Pib plays "Smoke on the Water" (Neverafter). "I stepped out to play 'Smoke on the Water' " is also a hall of fame quote to me. This list could be all Pib moments if I'm being honest, he's my favorite Zac character. And the fact that Zac doesn't roll well makes this moment funnier to me.

- Buddy Bear gets planted with the All Blossom (Dungeons and Drag Queens). Jujubee and Brennan owe me a therapy session for this one. I sobbed. My cat is my baby and I will be ruined the day she leaves me, so I get it. I really do.

- "Eat your dice, Brennan" (Fantasy High Sophomore Year). A great bit made physically possible by Siobhan. I hope Siobhan gives him gummy dice or something like that so that Brennan can continue to eat his dice for Junior Year.

- Orange Top Hat Fairy (Neverafter). It's a horror season and the cast is doing bits about how hot a mini is the entire finale and the Adventuring Party that followed. I felt the stress and off the walls energy through the screen. The Smooth Criminal pin was the first piece of Dimension 20 merch I bought.

- Viola's epic takedown of Phoebe (Burrow's End). Watching Rashawn absolutely crush it her first time in the dome was amazing. I loved Viola from the jump, her arc was so satisfying and fun to watch. Also the idea of a tiny stoat kicking a gun just the right way to get it to fire is hilarious. No notes other than please have Rashawn come back on every season she possibly can.

- Evan Kelmp warns the Rosemont student not to duel him (Misfits and Magic). Brennan's deadpan warning matched with the reactions of the other players and Aabria really make this scene. An underrated Brennan moment for sure.

- Stacey Fakename turns out to be real (Mentopolis). This was such a good reoccurring bit, so to have Stacey be real at the end of the story was too funny. In a season of bits, tropes, and puns - this one has the most payoff to me and is definitely my favorite.

there’s something so brilliant in cooper howard’s costume design - it’s so much more than just a simple blue and gold cowboy fit.

at the beginning of the show, before the bombs dropped, cooper howard was a good person - always kind to others despite the circumstances or how he was feeling in the moment.

you could say… he was exemplifying the golden rule.

this is evident in his costuming - cooper is decked out in gold even when the bombs dropped. the golden rule is still so close to his heart - i mean come on - look at how tight that bandana is around his neck.

even in certain lighting, his hat looks gold.

cooper howard being a good person and living by the golden rule is what barb probably fell in love with (she has her own interesting character analysis and thought process which i would love to discuss later). because this trait is so admired by her and those around cooper, she probably saw him as who she would hope future generations would become as they grow up in the vaults. people like him are the better future she envisions - so it’s no coincidence that the vault suit is in his colors.

what does the blue symbolize?

well, to me, i think it’s the corporate presence in the world. there’s more blue in the suit than there is gold - hinting at vaultech’s corporate greed, capitalism, and evil machinations. (there was also blue in his old cowboy costume - i.e. the presence of the studio and how they use cooper to push a mccarthyism narrative. kinda in the same way vaultech will use him)

the blue in the suit - symbolizing vaultech’s overwhelming presence and the reason for such a bleak and cruel world - does not swallow up the gold - the small semblance of humanity’s capacity to do and be good. it’s the small hint at barb’s intentions (analogous to the road to hell being paved with good intentions).

yet the man who was an inspiration for vaultech’s workers - the man who they all wished they could be like, the man who symbolized all the “do good” ideas they pass down to their children but in the end have no intention of following them (wink wink, looking at you, hank) - was in the end stripped of all his humanity by the world vaultech created (wow, would you look at that? another analogy for capitalism!)

this man, once rich in morals now robbed of them all, wanders the wasteland a ghoul. everything has been taken from him - symbolized being devoid of layers of skin.

now, he’s nothing but the ghost of the man he once was - haunted by what has been done. everything he wears as the ghoul is frayed, tattered, and dark - symbolizing that cooper howard, that kind and caring man before the bombs is dead.

but wait - is that…

you don’t see it? Ok, i’ll zoom in some more

GOLD? (perhaps even the same shirt he was wearing during the bomb drop??)

perhaps the golden rule, those values that he once held so dearly, are still there just dormant - waiting to be awaken again.

maybe cooper howard can come back… that just maybe there’s still hope for the good in humanity…

Inquiring minds want to know, has the tiktok saga gotten Eddie and the rest of Hellfire any guest spots on any d&d actual play streams?

Awe, man, they do! Of course, they do! This is such a brilliant idea and I’m kinda mad I didn’t think of it.

It’s actually Dustin who gets involved.

I’ve always imagined Dustin as like, a Hank Green type.

During the early days of YouTube, he created a change and has grown a pretty good following on there with his science videos. It’s very educational while also being interesting and fun. Dustin could definitely make YouTube his full-time job if he posted more regularly but he loves his career and YouTube is really just a hobby.

But because Dustin is pretty popular and very open about his interests, he gets invited on a D&D stream and it’s great. The party wasn’t playing regularly at the time and Dustin had talked about missing the game and the characters he’s created over the years.

Since it went off with a hitch and Dustin was a fan favorite, he was invited back to play again. He mentioned that he has some quasi-famous friends who are really into the game and may be interested in playing too. Eddie doesn’t answer his phone so Dustin ends up bringing Jeff with him (Eddie is pissed and betrayed when he finds out).

Dustin never accepts another offer to be a guest on a D&D stream after that because his life just gets very hectic. He accepted a research position that takes him out of the country, gets back together with Suzie, breaks up with Suzie, and then moves back to Chicago just in time for COVID.

It’s not until Eddie gets popular on TikTok that they even think to do their own stream. Hellfire Club has been zooming D&D sessions since a month into lockdown and most of them have some kind of social media presence. They could stream their own game.

They actually make it a charity event so Erica doesn’t get criticized for having COVID-guidelines approved fun.

Once lockdown is over and the guidelines loosen up a lot, Eddie actually makes a video on TikTok talking about Jeff and Dustin’s betrayal and how he’d love to go on one of these D&D podcast things and then immediately gets invited to three of them.

Bengiyo's Queer Cinema Syllabus

A few months back I was chatting with @bengiyo when the subject of queer cinema came up (unsurprising considering…ya know, the whole being BL buddies thing). As a semi-recent queerness realizer, and a Certified Baby Gay(™), Ben took it upon himself to share a post between himself and @shortpplfedup that inspired @the-conversation-pod and which also included a Completely Hypothetical Queer Cinema Syllabus Build Up to BL for Baby Gays. According to @bengiyo this started as a thought experiment.

But, unfortunately or…fortunately? for him, I constantly crave queer media, and @waitmyturtles and her Old GMMTV Challenge have inspired me to try my hand at working my way through this syllabus. I cannot guarantee that I will finish all these films. I have no idea how long it would even take, but I wanted to at least try!

I have been saying I would do this for months now, but I am inundated with BL content, and getting more every day, so I have been pushing it to the side. BUT! This evening a local movie theater played The Birdcage (1996) and I went and bought tickets and decided now was as good a time as any to get this started, I am hoping to take a page out of Turtle’s book and write notes/thoughts on the movies I end up watching. Forgive me the long winded introduction, but I figured some context would be nice if this ends up being a thing I stick with. So without further ado…

The Birdcage (1996) [Comedy]

Syllabus Unit 6: Gems

Summary: A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents.

Characters: Armand: Gay cabaret owner, played by Robin Williams Arnold: Drag queen partner, played by Nathan Lane Val: Armand’s son, played by Dan Futterman Agador: Armand and Arnold's maid? friend? live in slutty pool boy? played by Hank Azaria Katharine: Val's biological mother, played by Christine Baranski

Overall Reflection

This is a film I had never seen before. Hell, I didn’t even know it existed until around the time Ben shared his syllabus, and someone reblogged a scene from it that ended up on my dashboard. This was an interesting film to experience in theaters, because while watching with an audience made the funny bits funnier, there were also moments that I absolutely did not read as funny that other people did, and I didn’t know how I felt about that.

This film is set primarily in South Beach, Florida and partly in a drag club, which meant that the only thing I could think about whenever the drag club was on screen was Palace, the gay bar, drag brunch, queer club spot in Miami. On the other funny casual note, as a Floridian I feel seen by the moment where Katharine calls and says she’s going to be late, and it zooms out to show she is stuck at the bridge. Real.

I feel like the majority of gay media I have consumed in my life very much centers around two very masculine characters. So it was really nice to watch a story that involved more femme characters, and that the femme characters were not left as the butt of the joke. Which I recognize might be ironic considering this is a comedy and therefore there are jokes abound. But, when you compare the femme character in something like Legally Blonde, to the femme characters here, they are allowed to be dramatic, and they are allowed to trip and fall, but the love that Armand has for Arnold is palpable, they squabble and they get annoyed at each other, and they hurt each other, but they are partners, and they love each other too, and it shows throughout the film.

This sounds fucked up, I guess, but I love the undercurrent of pain that is threaded throughout the story. The way that Val starts off seeming like he is very content with the way he grew up, the parents that he had. The way that Val feels so so loved by his Dads, and he hurts them anyway. Because he is scared, because he loves Barbara and he knows that she is good, and that her parents aren’t, and that he has to hide his family. But in making them hide who they are, he is hurting them and at first you can see and feel the ways that Armand is trying to rebel against it. You can tell that initially he is angry, disappointed, upset, incredulous:

“Yes, I wear foundation. Yes, I live with a man. Yes, I'm a middle- aged fag. But I know who I am, Val. It took me twenty years to get here, and I'm not gonna let some idiot senator destroy that. Fuck the senator, I don't give a damn what he thinks.”

It is one of my favorite lines in the film. Because Val needs to be called out on exactly what he is asking his father to do for him. Because Armand's pain is visceral in this moment. But Armand loves his son and so eventually he relents.

Arnold’s presence and importance in Val’s life are constantly disregarded and he is allowed to be upset, and Armand is allowed to constantly put his son’s engagement and wedding in jeopardy to prioritize his partner and his partner’s feelings, because Arnold is a part of this family, and to hide him away is unfair.

I certainly had to grapple with some complicated emotions around the character of Val. I could understand where he was coming from, that he loves his fiancee and that their families have to meet, and that it is almost certainly physically safer for everyone if his parents are not visibly and obviously queer around the ultra conservative moralist senator. But the ways he ends up exhibiting casual disdain, anxiety, and judgment around the aspects of his parents’ home, his parents’ friends, his parents’ themselves makes me kinda hate him a little bit. It is hard for me not to see Val as entitled, not to consider him low-key dickish, because of how frequently he seems to get annoyed and disappointed that Armand and Arnold are not acting straight enough, that their house isn’t straight enough, that their family isn’t straight enough. But the film does not shy away from the mental toll it takes.

Were there aspects of the film itself I didn’t like? Honestly, not really. There are some jokes and terminology that do not fully stand the test of time, so if I watch it with a modern lens I think I would give it a 9.5. If I watch it in the context of the time it was written, I would probably give it a 9.8. But watching it in theaters certainly altered the way I engaged in certain scenes.

Mostly with the “I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking dressed like this, I’m even more obvious” scene.

Because people in the theater were laughing during this moment. Which is not to say I am judging them, I’m not mad at them for finding the moments leading up to that scene funny. I can understand how Arnold constantly having to catch himself and change his body language could come off as funny. But there is a weight to that scene for me that made the laughter feel incongruous. It is, in my opinion, an incredibly impactful scene. And it was hard for me to fully embrace that moment the way I know I would have if I was alone, after I realized that not everyone reads that scene as a serious one.

(Side Note: When I was looking for pictures of the movie poster, I found three different versions of it, and I chose the one above because it was the most intriguing to me in the way it presents Arnold. Because it is the only one of the posters that puts Arnold in a suit.)

The other moment, that I think I would have had a stronger response to if I was alone, was the moment near the end where Val takes off Arnold’s wig and introduces Arnold as his mother.

If I had watched this scene alone, I think there is a very high likelihood I would have gotten teary eyed during that moment. Because Val has spent so much time throughout this film trying to hide Arnold away. Wanting to send him off for the evening so they didn’t have to worry, trying to replace him with his biological mother, who he had never really met just for the sake of maintaining appearances.

Arnold LOVES Val. It is glaringly obvious from the first moment they share a screen that to Arnold, that is his kid. And I cannot imagine what it must have felt like for Arnold to literally have his every move critiqued and criticized for acceptable levels of gayness by his son and his partner. To feel unwanted by his son and his partner. To feel replaced by his son and his partner. He deserves to see and hear his son choose him, to know that Val considers Arnold his parent. Especially when Val’s biological mother is standing right there.

And as for the comedy aspect of this movie? I mean, it’s Robin WIlliams and Nathan Lane so it is obviously going to be a truly hilarious film all the way through.

Where does it fall in my By, For, About Queers Categorization?

For and About

Any piece of media that places queer characters at the center of it is something I would categorize as “About Queers”

As far as I can tell, the writers and director are not queer. I consider films to be made By Queers when a queer person has a role in controlling how the story unfolds, usually this means a writer or director for me, actors too if they have any influence over changing the story. (As an example, The Last of Us Episode 3 would be something that I would place in a By Queers category because Murray Bartlet who played Frank is gay and also was consulted to shape the way the characters were written and the story played out.) While Nathan Lane is gay, and I am sure a number of actors who play side characters are as well, I do not know how much influence they had over the film itself. Which is why I am currently excluding it from the By Queers categorization.

And as for the For Queers aspect? That moment where Arnold appears in a suit and tie before the dinner party, where he appears so much more obviously gay when he’s in “masculine clothes” that is written for the people who understand. The undercurrent of pain I mentioned, that exists to be recognized by the people who understand. Also, I watched this at the movie theater and I saw what kind of crowd it drew lmfao.

Favorite moment in the film?

Well, I could go sappy with it and pick one of the scenes I referenced above, but I would be lying. My absolute, hands down, no contest favorite moment in this film was seeing Agador in this cropped tank top:

List of Direct Pop Culture References in Season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen

I kept trying to find a comprehensive list somewhere but couldn't. So, here's one for me.

Ninja Warrior and Mirko Cro Crop (Ep1)

Sasuke, or Ninja Warrior as it's known as in multiple incarnations, is a sports reality show in which competitors attempt to complete a four-stage obstacle course.

Mirko Cro Crop is the ring name of Croatian mixed martial artist and kickboxer Mirko Filipović. And yes, Sasaki-senpai does clarify that Mirko's not dead.

Jennifer Lawrence (Ep2)

This one is possibly the most infamous reference in JJK actually. Of course, Yuuji is referring to American actress, Jennifer Lawrence. Gege Akutami said in the fanbook Yuuji became her fan after seeing Silver Linings Playbook (2012).

Super Smash Bros. (Ep5)

When the second years first ask Nobara and Megumi to participate in the Kyoto School Goodwill Exchange Event, Nobara's first thought is a Smash Bros. tournament. She'll use Meteor Smash so you can't get back up. All the better if it's the Wii version.

Onita (Ep6)

When Yuuji first starts lamenting his lack of ability to use a Curse Technique, Gojo cuts in that Yuuji can use a power bomb. Because it's something Japanese wrestler Atsushi Onita (who is not a sorcerer as far as we know) can do anyway.

Shonen power techniques (Ep6 cont.)

Yuuji then proceeds to list several other abilities from other shonen series. The Spirit Gun from Yu Yu Hakusho, Bankai from Bleach, and Dodon Ray and Kamehameha from Dragon Ball.

Lord of the Rings (Ep7)

For his training on controlling Cursed Energy, Yuuji is made to watch a variety of movies. For the adaptation, the animators interpreted the cry for Sam as a scene from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).

Actually, in the manga, Akutami was referencing I Am Legend (2007). The movie stars Will Smith and his only companion, a dog named Sam, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Uh, things don't go well for the dog.

Gojo's other movies (Ch13)

Additionally, there were a few specific movies Akutami had in mind that wasn't carried over to the anime. (Though, honestly, some of these DVD covers in the anime look so familiar and detailed I suspect they are references to other movies. If anyone can identify any of them lmk!)

Anyway, here are the ones we know of in the manga!

Léon: The Professional (1994), The Descent (2005), The Host (2006), The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1967). And the movie that Gojo spoils about the super annoying heroine who dies spectacularly at the end is Deep Blue Sea (1999). And yes, if you squint and zoom you can see which dvd has the cover for what movie.

Oikawa Tōru (Ep9)

A blink and you'll miss it stand-in of someone that suspiciously looks like Oikawa Tōru from Haikyuu!!

Castaway (Ep11)

Yuuji makes Junpei laugh when the former unexpectedly recreates the scene from Cast Away (2000) when Tom Hanks' character loses his illusory best friend...

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Ep11, Juju Stroll)

This entire Juju Stroll is a parody of Neon Genesis Evangelion episode previews. With shots that are reminiscent of NGE and a dramatic and frantic voiceover. The standout shot to me was the one of Yaga sitting with his hands folded in front of him in classic Gendo Ikari fashion. They even had Yaga sitting over a burning camp stove just so they could get the orange glow reflecting off his glasses. Ha!

Luncheon on the Grass

The full convergence of all the characters was completed by episode 13 in the first opening. The idyllic scene is based off of Luncheon on the Grass (aka Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe) by Claude Monet. I like how Panda is in place of the dog.

I wonder if Todo being half naked here is further reference to the more scandalous, The Luncheon on the Grass, by Édouard Manet which is what Monet's own painting is a direct take on. (That painting depicts a nude woman sitting with two fully dressed gentlemen.) ...Or it could just be Todo being Todo.

Ichiro?! (Ep15)

Utahime, incensed, tells Gojo to respect his senpai! I'm a bit hesitant about this one, but it may be a reference to Ichiro Suzuki jokingly complaining about not being respected as a senpai during the 2009 World Baseball Classic celebration. Baseball is HUGE in Japan, and the celebration looks wild. It may be iconic enough that it can be casually mentioned and most Japanese would know what Yuuji was talking about. Also, considering the Jujutsu Koshien episode about to come up, it may've been foreshadowing. (Found here)

Sebastian Stan (Ep15, Juju Stroll)

Another famous American celebrity! When asked about her type in episode 15's Juju Stroll, Momo was drooling over a picture of Sebastian Stan. Stan is most well known for playing the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes in the MCU. I wonder why her answer didn't pass muster with Todo. Maybe she hadn't had the chance?

Pepper (Ep16)

Nobara, smack-talking to Momo, says the Kyoto school have their own "Pepper-kun" that she should turn into scrap. Mechamaru immediately knew she was referring to himself. 😆 Pepper is the semi-humanoid robot that SoftBank introduced at a conference in 2014.

Great Teacher Gojo (Ep18)

Great Teacher Onizuka, aka GTO, is a classic series about a former biker gang member becoming the best teacher to a class of problem children.

Boogie Woogie

Boogie-woogie is a genre of music, but Todo's Cursed Technique, "Boogie Woogie" is specifically a reference to boxer, Muhammad Ali, who was recorded playing boogie-woogie on camera. (Which ties into an even more extensive reference regarding his mentor. But I won't spoil it here for anime-onlys.) I dare say, Todo's attitude may be a bit Ali inspired too. Haha

Ma-kun of Tohoku (Ep21)

When up to bat during Jujutsu Koshien, Nobara says people call her "the Ma-kun of Tohoku" which... doesn't make sense, since Masahiro Tanaka (affectionately called "Ma-kun" by fans) is already a baseball player for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. 😂

Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller, and Inoki (Ep15)

During Todo's nichijo fantasy of himself and Yuuji, Todo quotes, "What fool thinks of defeat before even trying?" Incorrectly attributing the quote to something teacher Anne Sullivan said to disability activist, Helen Keller. Todo is actually paraphrasing pro-wrestler, mixed martial artist, Antonio Inoki. Who said, "What kind of idiot thinks about losing before [the match]?" during a pre-match interview.

Seishun Amigo (Ep15)

At the end of that same daydream, with tears and snot streaming down his face, Todo says, "'In our hometown we were invincible,' huh." (地元じゃ負けしらず) Which are a part of lyrics from the popular song, "Seishun Amigo" (青春アミーゴ) by Shūji to Akira. "Seishun" means "youth" and "amigo" of course being the Spanish word for "friend."

My favourite part's of Baz Luhrman's Elvis 2022:

1. The trippy ass opening sequence that felt like it should be part of a 3d rollercoaster ride with the billboards and zooms round Las Vegas.

2. Just the way Tom Parker says "He's white" is fucking hilarious. And really says it all.

3. The buildup of the Elvis reveal with the fly fly away flashbacks before he goes on for the first time, that build up hella pays off.

4. The moment he transforms into Elvis like Clark Kent becoming Superman in his pink suit, the burst of electric guitar and the shots bouncing round on the beats is incredible.

5. Him dissapearing into the curtains with sheer disbelief on his face after the crowd went wild.

6. The radio presenter introducing Beale street, make's me laugh everytime.

7. The fairground scene where Parker being a creepy ass villain talks to Elvis in the Mirror Hall, him popping into frame is genuinely terrifying.

8. The way Elvis says and just the way the looks into the distance as he describes the Rock of Eternity.

9. The tension and sheer manipulation at play when Elvis parent's sign a deal with devil.. Parker I mean.. That zoom in on Elvis pressing his mom's hand down is magnifique.

10. Tutti. Fricken. Fruitti.

11. B.B. King telling some hard truths about how Elvis is safe cause he's a white boy people are making money off.

12. The cuts to the rally just before Elvis' preformance and the look he gets in his eye just as he thinks "fuck. that".

13. Wiggling. The. Finger.

14. Trouble. The whole song and scene.

15. Parkers utter bafflement in the line "He didn't listen to me." Truly not grasping how his puppet could possibly disobey.

16. The shot of him in the car looking up at fireworks, looking so so lost is haunting and beautiful.

17. The modern cover of Can't help falling in Love is perfecto.

18. The first shot of the Viva Las Vegas montage where during the freeze frame Butler genuinely looked the spit of Elvis.

19. The spinning shot of Elvis as we go into the trippy mess of Edge Of Reality and the look on his face with the water dripping as it all takes it's toll is so real.

20. The Hollywood sign scene. The way he sit's staring out, the shades, his boot propped up. Hell even the brief mention of the sign as a reflection of his career could easily be cheesey but he sounds so goddamn honest.

21. The way he laughs hearing his careers in the toilet completely self aware.

22. Rebellion uno 2, him not giving a damn what the Colonel thinks!!

23. Everytime Parker says Here Comes Goddamn Santy Clause. Tom Hanks has always been a comedic actor in leading man disguise.

24. The leather suit. The guitar he wears for no discernable reason as he doesn't play it at frist and then hands it off to somone but who cares!

25. The bloody look on Parkers face when the Whorehouse dancers and Kung Fu comes in.

26. The huh huh huh noise made as the song builds.

27. Bobby Kennedy getting shot and the frustration and pain as he says "It has everything to do with us."

28. When Parker threatens he'll have to leave him should he disobey and the absolutely glorious, "Hmm." .... "Um Hm." The man didn't even have to use actual works and spoke sooo much with those sounds and look alone.

29. Honestly the haunting way he plays "Here Comes Santa Clause" alone is hella beautiful.

30. That spin of the camera as we see the hugh red Elvis sign and his beautiful white suit.

31. The sheer emotion in the original song and Butler's preformance during "If I Can Dream" is a Goddamn masterpiece.

32. The headlines proclaiming his comeback!

33. Parker trying to claim credit as the special was his idea is just so narcissistic and sooo him I just can't even.

34. The score of the whole thing but during the hospital scene where Elvis tries to leave Parker a creepy slot machine type writer background song plays and just chills.

35. The utter horror I feel when told about the International Elvis says "The Snowman strikes again" and I scream internally every. Single. Time. NOOOOO

36. FUCK ME. My favourite scene in the entire film is him redoing That's Alright Mama Vegas style. The Ba ba Buuum "Raise the octave". BA BA BUUUUM. The silk shirt. The belt. The exhilaration in his eye's and acting. The drum part when he's just "Hah hah hah hah". Fuckkkkk.

37. The journey of song told as he preforms it and the three way cut shot of how it lead to this moment!

38. The punch in the gut of Suspicious minds, the lyrical metaphor and his entrapment plays out real time. The way the Colnel says "Now how are going to pay me." With a horrifying giggle. The fast cuts as the writing gets laid out. 5 Years.

39. The Vegas style I Will Always Love You. The best version of that song👌

40. Backstage as everyone rejoices completely oblivious to what has happened and the way the Colonely llaughs then cries as he witnesses Elvis joy. Is he actually a touch remorseful? Is it just relief his debts are cleared? A mix of both? Who knows but my God it's awful.

41. The montage of the tours, the icnoic outfits, Hunk a burning love one of my fave Elvis songs and those bloody capes, my God it was helluva look!

42. The callback to the beginning as Elvis collapses hearing from Jerry and the utter repulsion on his face as he stares at the Colonel as he's covered with water, says it all. His face acting is genuinely incredible in this movie.

43. The Apollo 11 style split screen and music as he gets injected just one of those touches that makes me think you creative guy you Baz!

44. The way he says and preforms the whole angry scene on stage, the way he says Colonel's an alien, the way his anger escalates, the screaming of fired and the quiet final "You're fired." Before LITERAL mic drop and walk away.

45. The heartbreak we feel as we see him about to leave the hotel only for Parker to be sat waiting for him sinking his fangs back into him again.

46. The insults Elvis throws at Parker is so raw and real and clearly he's so so tired and he is just trapped.

47. The way the Colonel says "The thing about the rock of Eternity my boy is that it's forever just beyond our reach." And that fucking hurts.

48. The face acting of Austin in that scene as he reacts to what the Colonel says is beyond words. The lighting is fabulous.

49. The chilling instrumental as Elvis gives in closing his blinds and telling his dad to send up Doctor Nick and the utter helplessness as he leans on the couch.

50. The way Elvis sits in the car in his jumpsuit with Priscilla the exhaustion in his body language and voice as he says he's out of dreams. How he never made anything lasting. How he thinks no one will remember him. And how horrifying it is the Elvis probably really didn't know how huge and lasting hims impact would actually be.

51. Him mouthing I will always love you.

52. The shot of him looking up as the plane flys and quiet subdued story of the bird that would die if it stopped flying.

53. Parker saying how it wasn't his heart or the pills or himself that killed Elvis but love. Because in a twisted way that's one of truest things he's said in the entire movie.

54. How Parker recalls he saw his last peformance, that he could barely walk but when he sang that song..

55. "Unchained melody from the album Unchained melody.. makes sense.." God Elvis could be funny.

56. The real Elvis during Unchained melody. That voice reverberates with so much feeling and strength despite him being weeks away from his death. He sang with his entire soul and he had a loootta soul.

57. The flatlining noise as Parker fades from the shot and we're left with the back of Elvis spreading his cape like wings reminded of how he couldn't fly away but left the only other way he could.

58. Elvis has left the building.

59. The plain white font for the lines about Parker and Elvis having his in glorious, glorious gold.

60. The credits starting with the utterly bedazzled BAZ LUHRMAN. And I say thank you to that man! Thank you so so much. I love. This. Movie.

I know it's pretty much the whole movie buuut what can I say 🤷‍♀️

ITS SUPPOSED TO BE A HORROR MOVIE: The Debaser The Movie The Soundtrack (Chapters 1-6)

So for a while I've been I imagining bits of Debaser like I'm shooting it as a fucked up rom-com so uh... I guess I'm putting a soundtrack together with descriptions of the shots the songs go with. It's over the top and incredibly on the nose cause I think that's funny & it won't make a lot of sense unless you've read Debaser so probably best go read that first. It also definitely contains fic spoilers. This is only part one so stay tuned for more!

*All of these songs would have to be chopped and screwed to make the timing work btw they obv wouldn't really get played full out. Also with the length of this thing it's probably more like a series than a movie but whatever.

(And if you're wondering about aesthetic influences, I think what I've envisioned here would end up looking like some Danny Boyle stuff with the hyper dynamic camera work, cuts & shots timed with music, and some slightly fantastical visual elements. I want to say there would also be a John Waters energy but that might just be because it's gay and unhinged.)

PROLOGUE

1. Girls on Film- Duran Duran

The song starts playing over a montage of Billy & Stu watching horror movies, camera is behind them with the TV screen framed in the center of the shot between their heads. Images on the tv screen cut rapidly with the beat of the song on a slow zoom forward, showing a sequence of kills from different movies. Song fades a little to play under them talking as the camera reverses to show their faces. It continues through the conversation & comes back to full volume as Billy picks the first of one of Stu’s polaroids to look at it closer. It continues to play through the hunting sequence, and does a simple fade out.

2. A well respected man- The Kinks

Begins over a shot of Billy in his room, light from the TV flashing over his face. Dolly shot pans through his closed bedroom door and down the hall, showing a series of family photos on the wall. Camera continues to pan into the living room where Nancy & Hank are yelling at each other, Nancy grabbing her bag and heading for the door. Camera cuts to Billy, already outside on his bike in the rain, cuts to his dad pouring himself a glass of whiskey, cut to Nancy, driving past the sign on the way out of Woodsboro, mascara running. Finally it cuts back to Billy ditching his bike on Stu’s lawn and climbing in his window. Song ends abruptly as he pushes Stu's window open.

Chapter 2

3. Teenage Dream- T Rex

Starts when Billy starts choking Stu. Shot gets a hazy vingette & (cue the Danny Boyle shit) becomes semi-psychedelic, colors flaring brighter & we get a ridiculous shot of Stu falling through some sort of galaxy behind his own closed eyes. When he opens them, the camera goes slow-mo on Billy, shooting him like a love interest in an 80’s movie- soft focus again, hair blowing in the wind (what wind??). The song cuts out when Stu blacks out, and the next shot frames the two of them from the side, effects & wind gone. Without the music the movie and rain can be heard in the background.

4. It's Not Unusual- Tom Jones

Starts immediately after Billy says “Nah, Stu you’re good. Have fun screwing her later.” The camera stays on Billy's back as walks out, holding on the door as it slams shut. The next shot shows Stu's face closer up, then pulls out to show the length of the bathroom as an old man comes in and gives Stu a weird look. The song continues to play as Stu leaves the bathroom, then goes to find Casey and hears that Billy left. The song replaces diegetic sound as the camera follows Stu and Casey out of the theatre, then cuts to Stu's house with them hooking up and Stu still looking confused. Cut to black as Stu unzips his pants & the song cuts out at the same time.

Chapter 3

5. Good Old-fashioned lover boy- Queen

The song starts to play as Billy gets on his bike after visiting Sid. We see multiple tracking shots of him biking around Woodsboro, cutting between locations. The camera reverses to show him from the front, match cuts switching through the same locations as he continues to bike, looking completely dead behind the eyes as the song continues to play. Finally we get him pulling up to his house and switch to a handheld shot, following him from behind as he drops his bike on his lawn and climbs in through his window. The camera stays outside the window as he walks to his bed and drops onto it and the music cuts out hard. Switch to a short overhead shot of Billy lying on his bed in the silence before the scene ends.

In the next scene at school, when Stu starts doing his silent good boy act following him around, we get a single line of Freddy Mercury’s voice without the instrumental part of the song, singing the line “Say the word your wish is my command”.

6. Criminal- Fiona Apple

The song starts on a slow pan over Stu as he lies on the ground under Billy (after surprising him with the costume after school). The camera focuses on the bowie knife in his hand as he pushes the hem costume up, then cuts to a macro shot of the tip of the knife running over Stu’s stomach, goosebumps and hairs pricking up. The song builds, getting louder with Billy’s inner monologue & the shot moves in even closer for the first actual cut, following a drop of blood as it rolls across Stu's skin.

On the lyric "I've done wrong and I wanna suffer for my sins", the shot cuts quickly to a a shot of Stu's hands moving to Billy's hips, neither of their faces visible. We hold on this shot for an awkward moment, then cut to an over head shot as Billy takes Stu's hands and puts them on the ground next to his head.

The song continues to progress under the rest of the scene as the background starts to fade into black, until they're essentially under a spot light on a black background as if they're on stage. When the bridge kicks in to be timed with Stu really starts to loose it, and the song cuts out immediately after the lyric "The devil wants to know" as Stu’s mom knocks on the door, snapping them back to Stu's room as the background.

Chapter 4

7. I Know What Boys Like- The Waitresses

Stu’s inner monologue is narrated over a shot of the whole group at lunch. The shot switches to one from Billy’s pov, directed at Stu as he does a really exaggerated yawn, lifting his arms up so that his shirt pulls up and the bandages show. The shot switches as if it’s coming from Stu’s perspective now, directed at Billy as he glares over Sid’s shoulder. Reverse shot back to Stu, who smirks, and the song starts on the first vocal line with a cut to a screen split into 3 panels.

Each panel shows an instance of Stu showing off his bandages- in class, at the fountain, in gym, each of the panels switching through multiple instances of him doing this, and then to instances of Billy retaliating- throwing a basketball at him, shoving him, just straight up walking away. The song fades out at the start of the scene where they end up at the fountain alone together (when Billy says he’ll come to Stu’s birthday).

8. Call me- Blondie

Scene opens with a tracking shot on Billy’s back, following him up the walkway to the Macher house. The lights are on and people can be seen partying inside. The song is faintly audible from inside the house, getting louder as he nears. When he reaches the house Billy turns to the left and walks out of the shot, but the camera doesn’t follow him, it continues up the steps and through the front door as a teenager opens it to stumble outside for a smoke, the song finally playing at full volume when the door opens and the camera moves through it. The shot moves through groups of partying teens, eventually finding Stu in the living room watching Randy lecture.

The song continues to play in the background through the rest of the scene, a little quieter under the group chatter as Stu goes to answer the phone. The song has faded into a slightly tenser instrumental score by the time the phone call is over, but fades back in after Billy’s jump-scare, only to cut out entirely when Stu discovers Casey and Steve in the garage.

9. I touch myself- Divinyls

Billy says "last longer next time" and the first discordant notes of the song begin to play over a shot of him getting up and walking to the door after thier cutting session. When the door closes the shot cuts to Stu, unmoving and looking a bit shell-shocked as his hip continues to bleed. He blinks once, then the drum kicks in as the song starts for real and he begins to move, unzipping his jeans.

Cue a frantic and slightly delirious montage of Stu jerking off, intercut with visuals of Billy from the cutting scene, shot from Stu's perspective and Stu-ified with saturated colour and soft focus like it was in the choking scene. He lasts until the end of the first chorus, and the song cuts out hard on the last “oh no” as he makes an obvious cum face. The image cuts at the same time, switching to a shot of Stu’s hands as he wipes the blood and cum off on a T-shirt.

Chapter 5

10. Love buzz- Nirvana

The opening baseline starts playing over a panning shot of them watching something in Stu’s room, the shot facing them so the Tv isn’t visible. Cut to a shot of Billy’s fidgeting hands as the drum kicks in, then a closer shot of the lower portion of Stu’s face, focusing on his mouth as he bites a twizzler, then pull back to the first shot, showing both of them. The first guitar riff is timed to come in just after Billy says “You should run.” Tracking shot of Billy chasing Stu through the house.

The first vocal line plays as Billy starts choking Stu and the song plays all the way through. The shot itself at least appears to be a oner, moving around the two of them as they banter and play their choking game. The camera then follows Billy as he runs away to the bathroom, halting abruptly outside the door as Billy slams it. Cut to a shot of Billy’s face inside the bathroom, he’s obviously jerking off, match cut to a shot of Stu face doing the same, then back to Billy as he makes an obvious cum face in time with the end of the song.

11. Line up- Elastica

Song starts playing over an aerial view of the Prescott backyard, filled with people and decorated for the barbecue. We can’t hear the crowd at all, no background noise, just the song. Cut to a shot at ground level, focused on Maureen, standing with Neil near the barbecue. They’re talking to someone, laughing. The shot pans sideways through the crowd to Billy, standing with Sid, who is preoccupied talking to someone else. Billy is clearly looking in Maureen's direction.

The shot starts to pan back towards Maureen like it’s sliding away, but then it cuts to a shot in Sidney’s bedroom with the music paused before the first vocal line as Sid asks if Billy is ok and he tells her he just misses his mom. Cut to a shot of Sidney, Billy and Tatum walking up to the party, the song picking back up where it left off at the barbecue, playing diegetically at the party. It plays all the way through in the background of the scene and then transitions to generic party music.

12. Be My Baby- The Ronettes

Opening drum beat starts when Stu says “I want it to be permanent”, playing over a reaction shot of Billy, making a face like he's in the fucking kitchen scene (aka completely smitten). When the rest of the instruments come in, the shot reverses to show Stu, stylized in Billy’s version of Stu’s Romance-Vision™: Soft focus, Stu’s eyes looking extra blue from the color grading so he looks like an old hollywood actor (think Paul Newman’s eyes), vingnette, pathetic expression. The works.

Reverse shot back to Billy looking smitten again (kitchen scene), and then the song plays out over the rest of the scene, then song cuts out hard when they cum. We get a final shot of Billy’s face over Stu’s shoulder as he has his post-nut clarity moment, scored only by heavy breathing and the background noise of the party.

Chapter 6

13. Can't Take My Eyes Off You- Frankie Valli

Starts to play over a montage of Stu doing his little acts of submission, taking Billy’s coat, getting on his knees to take off his shoes, opening doors, carrying his things, intercut with shots of Stu looking at him, just completely smitten. The montage is in soft focus with a light pink tint. As the song starts to pick up, we start to get shots of Stu getting pushed into walls, slapped, punched, looking deliriously happy the whole time. Intercut with these are shots of them ‘training’- chasing each other in costume, picking locks, creeping around woodsboro at night.

This continues to escalate with the song, with shots of him hitting the ground in multiple locations, shots continuing to cut on beat. For the final chorus, the camera pulls out further to show both of them, with Billy choking while he rides his leg, Billy cutting him and grinding against him as the camera begins to circle them like it did in the love buzz sequence, tightening into a dizzying spiral right at as the song ends.

14. Bizarre Love Triangle- New Order

The song starts to play as Billy tackles Maureen down on stop of Stu, the three of them falling in slow motion as the color grading switches back to the pink-tinted soft-focus look from the montage. The next shot centres Billy from an upward angle, like it’s coming from Stu’s POV, showing Billy stabbing, blood splattering up onto his mask and looking almost pink, glittering.

Reverse shot to Stu under Maureen, both of them rocking as Billy continues to stab her, a pool of blood starting to spread out under Stu in the shape of a heart. At the instrumental before the first chorus, the camera pulls back to a medium shot, showing them both as Billy pulls the knife out for the last time. There’s a moment where he doesn't move, but his chest can be seen moving as he breathes heavily from the exertion.

When the first vocal line of the chorus hits, the slo-mo stops and Billy moves at full speed, pushing his mask up and pulling off Stu’s, then kissing him. The camera switches to a closer shot as they kiss, and the background becomes semi-surreal, sparkly, bloody starbursts popping behind them. The song cuts out hard at the end of the chorus when their alarms go off.

15. Something Stupid- Frank & Nancy Sinatra

Song fades in on an over-the-shoulder shot, showing Billy biking away from Stu in the forest behind Sids house after the murder. It comes to full volume as Stu packs his things away, and we see a tracking shot of his back as he bikes home. This crossfades to shots of the knives being wiped down, then when the vocals come in it crossfades to a shot of water running red to pink down a shower drain & over skin, then to a slightly abstract shot of blood in water (I’ve never been the same since Hannibal) as Stu washes their clothing.

The shot comes up through the surface of the water to show Stu, looking worried as he scrubs. This shot crossfades to a shot of Billy, creeping through Cotton Weary’s back yard. Cut back to Stu’s hands as he scrubs, blood still caked under his nails, then match cut to Billy’s gloves hands as he picks the lock and pushes the door open. This crossfades out to a shot of Stu putting wet clothes in the drier, to Billy pushing Cotton’s bloody jacket into a trashcan, then slipping back out of the house. Crossfade back to Stu, sitting in front of his dryer looking stressed as the music fades out, and then Billy comes down the stairs.

When Billy kisses Stu, the song comes back on for the instrumental bridge, stopping before the vocals come in again as Billy pulls away.
