What's the best gift you ever received?

Chapter 15 excerpt from Don't Let Me Go on a03.

By the time Gaz finished getting more beers, the conversation had changed.

“What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?” Soap asked the group out of the blue.

“This sounds like an interview question,” Alejandro said.

“Alejandro, just answer the damn question,” Soap said with a chuckle.

“Easy,” Gaz interjected, sitting down with his hands full of bear. “For me it was a PS2. I got it for Christmas and it changed my life. Though my mum might say for the worse.”

Gaz began to pass around the beers, sliding one in front of Ghost. Ghost looked down at the half-filled drink still in his hands. He knew he was nursing it. The thought of drinking a second beer was completely unappealing to him.

He also made a promise many years ago to never let himself become dependent on alcohol again. He brushed it to the side, giving it to Soap who took it without question, still engrossed in the conversation.

“I think the most memorable gift I ever got was a really nice pair of football cleats,” Soap answered. “It was right before I entered high school. We didn’t have a lot of money and my mum had saved up for a long time. I ended up using them all four years. Even won nationals in them.”

“The craziest gift I ever received was actually given to me by Alejandro,” Rudy said, nudging the man.

A puzzled look crossed Alejandro’s face. “Qué? What are you…”

“You don’t remember? It was the car.”

Alejandro’s eyes widened and his mouth opened slightly recalling the memory. “Sí, claro!”

“Alejandro had given me his old car which was my first car ever,” Rudy explained to the group. “It was amazing.”

“Mierda… that car was a piece of shit,” Alejandro disputed. “I was getting a new one anyway. You were honestly doing me a favour by getting it off my hands.”

“It was still a gift.”

“I’m surprised it didn’t break down after one day.”

“Oh, it did. Many times,” Rudy said laughing. “But it was still worth it.”

“When was this?” Gaz asked.

The two of them looked at each other, thinking. “Ummm, maybe when we were 17 or 18,” Alejandro said uncertainly.

“Sí, around that age,” Rudy confirmed. “What about you, Alé?”

Alejandro thought for a second. Then a devious smile spread across his face.

“I’ll keep the intimate details to myself,” he bragged.

A chorus of disgust rose from the table. Price rolled his eyes, Rudy muttered a bunch of phrases in Spanish under his breath and shook his head, Soap squinted his eyes as if he was seriously considering what the gift could be, and Gaz was seemingly distracted by something else on the other side of the bar.

“For me,” Price spoke up, “it’s the 50th anniversary, Offshore Angler Split-grip Spinning Rod.” So, he was a fisher. This didn’t shock Ghost. What did shock him was that he actually had recreational hobbies. “She was a beauty...”

“I can’t imagine the Captain actually relaxing,” Soap joked.

“Once you get to be my age, you’ll start to surprise even yourself. I used to hate fishing, then one day I woke up and I had turned into my father.”

“Please, no,” Rudy said.

“Are you actually any good at it?” Soap asked, curious. Price pursed his lips and moved his head side to side noncommittally. “So, you don’t catch fish?”

“Listen, son. Fishing is not about catching fish.”

“Of course,” Soap said, tongue in cheek. After a moment of silence between the group, Soap turned to Ghost. “What about you?”

Ghost was hoping he would be left out of this conversation – he hadn’t received a lot of gifts in his life. Anything he cared about was abandoned when he was a child. He lived out of his suitcase for a whole month at one point. He also avoided celebrating his birthday.

Soap continued to look up at him in anticipation. So was the rest of the team. Ghost figured he wasn’t going to get out of this one without saying something. He thought for a second, then an idea came to him.

He reached down toward his hip, unclasped the sheath for his knife from his belt, and placed it on the table in front of him with a heavy thud.

The sheath was made from a dark brown leather and simply constructed. The intricate handle of the knife stuck out from the sheath. Both sides of the handle were made from blue and white marble in a wispy design. A metal line ran the length of the handle all the way around.

The sound of Ghost dropping the knife on the table startled Gaz into paying attention again. Everyone looked at the knife.

Half a second later, Soap hurriedly grabbed it and hid it under the table again.

“Put that away!” Soap hissed in a low voice.

“I doubt anyone here would care,” Ghost replied.

“We also don’t want it to be an invitation for anyone either.” He passed it back to Ghost underneath the table who clipped it onto his belt again.

“It’s a good-looking knife,” Price complimented, taking a swig from his beer.

“Thank you,” Ghost said flatly.

Gaz’s attention shifted away from the table again as he looked out across the bar. Suddenly, a big smile spread across his face. With a slap of the table, he grabbed his beer and stood up.

“Well, it’s been great, but I think I’m just gonna… mingle… for a while.”

Ghost turned around to look to the side. Two young women were giggling and looking over at Gaz, motioning for him to come over. Gaz flashed the table a bright smile and proceeded to walk their direction.

Eventually, the rest of the team also left the booth to explore other parts of the bar.

XDINARY HEROES GROUP DYNAMIC

this reading was a paid request, a big thank you to the buyer!

overall:

a lot of energy and passion! they feel very hopeful about the future and their chance for success and seem to work fairly well together. a major positive is that they actively all try to make sure they celebrate often (when they achieve something they reward themselves and congratulate each other). they’re still getting used to being around each other so often and being in this group has taught them a lot about what it means to get along with people in general, so it’s definitely more coworker vibes than friendship vibes currently but the foundation they’re building together has potential for being solid. they make sure to look out for one another and while all of them have moments of feeling as if their individuality is threatened it seems they’re focused on the long haul and try not to allow petty jealousies to get out of control.

gunil:

seems a bit moody and emotional. he’s quite burdened and stressed and seems to be pushed to his limit trying so hard to be a team player. he convinces himself he’s always getting the short end of the stick. being around people so often in general seems it could be hard for him so he should work on communicating his boundaries and concerns early on so he doesn’t become too resentful and act out. honestly, down the line i worry his character may become more questionable (sleazy, angry and vindictive) so he should really work on this now.

jungsu:

he wants everyone to get along and can take on the role of the mediator. he’s cooperative and good at compromise and doesn’t even seem to mind if he’s bossed around. he makes sure to spend a lot of time with himself so he doesn’t feel overwhelmed but he’s also the one reminding everyone to have fun when they’re together and make the most of the memories they’re creating. he gives the vibes of "slow and steady wins the race" and he plays his cards carefully.

gaon:

gaon seems pretty simple, he’s essentially in work mode constantly when with the members and isn’t too interested in wanting them to ever be more than coworkers. this can cause him to sometimes be inconsiderate towards them but his detachment and lack of emotion towards them also makes him come across as laidback so he’s easy to be around. he’s professional but also risk taking and he pushes the members for success because he wants it too. while he’s not exactly looking to become best friends with anyone he does pay attention and will stand up for someone or their opinion if he feels they’re right.

o.de:

he’s kind of secretive, he probably struggles the most with feeling like his independence is threatened so while he gets along with the members superficially he always has something he’s keeping in reserve and never reveals his hand. he should be wary of this competitiveness eventually hurting the dynamic permanently because he could be prone to sabotage (whether it’s manipulation to get what he wants out of a comeback at the expense of other members or even just talking badly about them to their peers). he should also be careful of saying things he can’t take back because if it happens too often those hurt feelings will never truly go away. side note: he should also be very careful of scandals, especially ones involving (his treatment of) women which would bring down the image of the group. he should remember to keep the big picture in mind as he does now.

junhan:

his feelings are very easily hurt. it seems this will be a common theme for him in this group but it also could have happened in any group given his personality. he’s often upset and always pushing down how hurt he is, he’s overly focused on keeping the peace and doesn’t speak out about basically anything. very evasive and this prevents him from becoming closer with the members, being forced to have an argument with one or a few of them would actually clear the air and give them both a deeper understanding of one another. he needs to be told often he’s appreciated and valued or it becomes even worse so it’s important the other members are eventually able to pick up on this to help him feel better.

jooyeon:

seems he’s a bit of a loner overall. he wants attention and for the members to like him but he mostly keeps to himself and just does what he thinks is expected of him. he has a gentle and sort of dignified vibe where he wants to be professional and stay the bigger person in all situations. he’s good at resolving (or staying out of) conflicts and is optimistic and tries to keep the mood bright. his laziness can be something that annoys the other members.
