I was thinking of saving this for the new year or something but decided I might as well. And yea, Quartz, it's a real Rainbow family issue!

okay, so. i’m grinding drizz, as one does (seriously i spend a good chunk of my gaming hours there) and it makes me consider a portion of nyra lore i don’t think i’ve talked about much before - her mounts!
mentions of animal injury below!
her only official mounts rn are her raptor trippy and her skyscale maurizia (pronounced mauriTHia thank you very much) and they’re both very much present with her during icebrood saga.
trippy is there with her for the first half of it, up until drizzlewood. she was trapped with him in bjora in darkrime delves alongside almorra’s grave because the snowstorm was so bad she had to wait it out with the grave of her order’s general - order she watched slowly thin out by the way - which is y i k e s. not being with trippy, who is like an oversized dog but with claws and lizard-y. everything else about it is. he then almost died by falling so terribly he injured his spine and she branded him so he’s half-branded now, like her!
maurizia takes over after that, because she sent him home to recover for a bit. i imagine she’s flown on zia’s back for scouting purposes across the entirety of the map. there were snipers, of course - but if they so much as grazed zia’s wings, they had the full wrath of the legendary commander to contend with. also, the sight of nyra flying down on a skyscale of all things must have chilled blood in dominion’s veins (i know it would in mine) considering that by icebrood saga, nyra’s quite a proficient skyscale rider.
(don’t ask me where she keeps a whole ass skyscale. she just does. when she lets me know i will let you know as well.)

I would trade my memories of enjoying Harry Potter in a second but if I remember correctly the sequence of events that led me to joining the nanowrimo forums began with being in online HP fandom and finding out about NaNoWriMo via Kristina Horner on YouTube.
And - and this is embarrassing, not because 'oh young me was so cringe' but just because it always feels surreal looking back on old interests that didn't stay with you and when you add onto that the realization that the author you've adored is a terrible person and that terribleness is present in the series you really enjoyed it feels even more Unfortunate - I got dubbed Griffin by Owl because I used to have a Gryffindor banner in my forum signature, meaning my actual name would not be my name if I hadn't got into this unfortunate book series as a little teen.
So like, something about the positive impact shitty or imperfect things can have on your life, the personal discomfort of something important to you being tainted, how it isn't an excuse to continue supporting shitty people out of nostalgia, etc etc. Anyway I'll stop talking about Harry Potter and my 'cringe' lore now.

Proposing V for the ask game, if you're still doing it?
My favorite thing about V:
On a narrative level, he represents the best quality of DMC5, it's fleshing out of Vergil. I love that deep down, underneath the fear-driven quest for power, Vergil is a soft goth boy who loves a particular poet so much he makes it his whole personality. Plus, I love the interpretation that he looks so young because Vergil lost so much of his life to being Nelo Angelo.
On a gameplay level, I love how you can make V constantly taunt while making his minions fight.
My least favorite thing about V:
On a narrative level, as much as I love his voice and design, it would have been so cool if he was a woman instead. Besides the Implications, it would be a neat way of nodding to his human mother. Also, I've been told that the literary character that Urizen is named after is a part of a dyad, the other half of which is a female deity. And DMC5 sorely fumbles it's female representation anyway, having a playable female character might have won it some points (though realistically, there's a good chance they would have fucked up her design, and the hate toward her playstyle would be so much more vitriolic).
Speaking of playstyle, on a gameplay level, I do enjoy playing as V, but the moveset definitely needs more development. I don't like that V's evasive actions require his familiars because you have to interrupt their combat (and even Griffon's attack charging) in order to use them, even though the whole point of V seems to be multitasking. Plus, the hidden range limit for the minions can really screw you, especially considering that Shadow's attacks can easily take it outside of that limit, causing it to teleport back to V's side and interrupt your attack strings. And what's sad is that due to unpopularity, there's a real chance that we won't get to see a new iteration of this playstyle.
(There's even a series in my pinned post all about a certain character ending up in this position, just saying).
My favorite line by V:
It's hard to say, since he has one of the best if not the best vocal performances in the game. I do like that he says "it's my turn to play with the Devil Sword" at one point.
My "brOTP" for V:
I love his friendship with Griffon. It's a shame it got no closure whatsoever because the writers decided they wanted to magically wipe away Vergil's trauma via DMC1 callback boss fight.
My "OTP" for V:
I don't generally like ships for Vergil, but one that I would entertain is one with Lucia. I see the humor in her meeting a man who's just as handsome as Dante but with none of the charm, and realizing she's actually fine with that. Plus, Vergil is far more comfortable with his demon side than his human side, and I think that would extend to Lucia. He would think her devil form is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, and he'd be right. Lucia deserves a handsome loser boyfriend who loves the demon in her so much that she learns to love it too, especially since he also comes with a giant stoic tree man with sharp teeth and tentacles, and of course our favorite poetry-lover.
My "nOTP" for V:
Nero x V is sadly popular, even though they're literally father and son. And even when talking about just V, not Urizen or Vergil as a whole, I don't care for shipping him with Lady. She doesn't even fucking like him, nor should she.
A random headcanon about V:
I think his cane is tied to Rebellion in some way. Perhaps it simply contains some of the same materials, which is why it's good at conducting demonic power, and why it allowed him to reunite with Urizen.
An unpopular opinion about V:
While I am firmly in the "V and Vergil are the same character and that isn't a bad thing" camp, I am sympathetic to the wish that V was his own character. I cannot fault someone for loving V but not finding Vergil interesting, and I don't think it's worth getting mad at them over.
A song I associate with V:
Besides Crimson Cloud? There's a "combo mad" sort of video from time to time titled Void Violin, it features some good music.
My favorite picture of V:
That gif of him tripping and dropping his free taco.

honestly with all the wackiness of medieval bestiary art it's kind of a shame they never got to encounter the platypus and the echidna. the depictions would be off the charts
Right off the bat I can imagine medieval Europeans would take the whole "part duck part beaver" thing the platypus has going on to like the most literal extent possible, possibly even giving it wings like a griffon. As for the echidna, I could imagine them just drawing a hedgehog with the head of a stork or something XD

WIP Game
tagged by: @squadron-of-damned-writes (frantic waving and sending of hearts and kisses!)
RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP list, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it. And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Wellllllllllllllllllll so uh, this is an incomplete list and comes into two halves. It's incomplete because is it really a WIP when it's just a prompt copy pasted into a doc with nothing actually added to it? Also, when does something stop becoming a WIP? When it's done? When you start posting chapters on ao3?
These are, to my shame, all for dragon age:
"Something unexpected"
"break a curse"
"whose blood pt 2"
"twins happiest"
"saving loghain"
"in hushed whispers" (suuuuuuuuuuper original title)
"griffon and Peacock"
"Failed ritual pt 4"
"Fly little bird"
"Madman 5+1"
"Fennanders Bittersweet Angst" (can you guess the pairing)
"Call Girl Anders"
"drinks"
"Post Boom Fennanders" (can you guess the pairing?)
"Janders"
"Not Jealous"
"Spunk Mage and the Fainting Goat"
"Twins Arishok"
"Roommates Sequel"
"nathanders"
These are all original fiction:
"William Everyman's Improbable Romance"
"the other necromantic therapist"
"Shit, I'm the NPC"
"Endeavors"
"Sneaky elves"
I'm just gonna cheat and use the tag list from Secret Sanders and add a few additional beloved mutuals

You bring up Engage's bad writing a lot is there anything you did like about the game?
Oh sure, quite a bit.
For one, it's a lot prettier than Three Houses (you'll never be able to unsee that the clouds above the monastery have sharp edges) and the load times aren't horrific. Music is great as always, and it fixed an issue 3H had where the Rain versions of BGMs were already so bombastic that Thunder felt barely any different.
Engage has a better sense of reward in that there's actual item drops from enemies to go after (3H is incredibly stingy with interesting drops, which is a massive shame, a lot of the items are quest rewards and they tend to just be Steels until the mid game is over) so that encourages pursuing side objectives (oh which there are actually some), and gives a better sense of satisfaction from kills.
The classes are better balanced (even if wyverns, mage knights, and griffons are king) and now that the well has unfucked SP acquisition rates, you can start on builds much earlier.
Alear's a better MC than Byleth (replaying 3H, it's kinda jarring how much Byleth's supports are just their interlocutor speaking to themselves) and while the main story is a mess, the characters are generally charming and there's some well-written ones (Celine, Yunaka, Ivy, Hortensia, Pandreo, Panette, Rosado, and Citrinne are very nice) mixed among the Clanne, Framme, and Vanders of the world... Still confuses me why they gave you the most bland one-note characters at the start of the game.
Breaking is a satisfying mechanic, if a bit overtuned.
Engage is probably the first game in the series to make bosses feel really good, giving them multiple health bars was a massively good idea. They also tend to actually move, so the devs don't have to give them all innate all-range countering like 3H or cheating busted enemy-only 1-2 weapons like Fates.
Infinite dura weapons and forging does a nice job of making weapons feel good to invest into. Like my +5 Ridersbane that one-shots Wolf Knights isn't a Ridersbane, it's my Ridersbane.
Also, Emblems are a fun mechanic for build options, though this comes at the expense of individual units not having much individuality.
I think a game that combined the writing of 3H with some of the better gameplay elements of Engage would be great.
Good question, thanks!

@astarab1aze | kiss roulette | 3 of 3 7. A romantic kiss
Garrett liked to joke about having a seat available for V whenever he needed it. He may not have needed, but he certainly wanted when he brought himself over, accepting the offer even though a readily open seat on the sofa would have easily accommodated him. Wouldn't have been as nice, though.
If anything, the extra space was good for his feet and legs, because he sat facing the armrest, head turned toward Garrett, arms around his shoulders, legs almost bent at the knees as they stretched out across the cushion in front of him. Garrett's lap was big enough for V's scrawny behind, and he happened to like it there. He liked it in Garrett's arms, too, and a sweet peck was pressed to his temple while he gathered the warlock up and drew him ever closer to his body. There was nothing to this, nothing preceding and surely nothing to follow, or so V thought; but it was nice to simply be, in each other's company and in each other's clutches. V happened to be in an amorous mood, and that may have been why he indulged this way at all. Not nearly as physical as Garrett most times, but he certainly could be once in a while, and so his hands touched and his arms hugged, and his mouth, for once, smothered the smotherer.
As far as V knew, there wasn't anything sexual about this, but knowing Garrett... Knowing him for his kneading and pulling, his snaking, sneaky hands and wild tongue—and, certainly, he had a hand over V's outermost thigh in a grasp that pulled and pulled as if to nullify all escape, and certainly he had tried capturing V's lips with an open mouth, like a sea bass too ready for the hook and line, but V denied him that and seemed to know too well what he was up to. Both were in a fine humor, giggling with each other like teasing schoolboys, and Garrett whined about not being given a chance.
V knew a few people, and demons, who would think this display of unabashed affection and play ridiculous. Offensive, even, but he only pitied them for their hardened hearts and sense of shame. Everything from Griffon's petty disgust to Nero's prudishness—but none of it mattered now, and it never would so long as he had love to both give and take. For now, he concerned himself with Garrett's face, a meeting of brows and noses in a cute nuzzle that was returned, along with a peck to his cheek.
If he hadn't known better, he'd think he was tipsy. They did have a few sips of wine earlier, but...there was no way. Too little, too soon!
"Stop trying to bite me," V snickered, grinning as widely as Garrett, who refuted the accusation with toothy laughter of his own.
"'m not!"
As if to stop him, V held his face in one hand, and held it as firmly as he held his gaze. Maybe there was something a touch addled about V, but he didn't think he noticed and he positively did not care. The seconds lasted quite a while, didn't they? The childish teasing grew into something a little more ardent, more sober, and there was a spell of quiet while the lids over V's eyes drooped ever so subtly. He may have stopped laughing, but he was still smiling, still elated, even with a bit of a squeeze to Garrett's face. "Why are you so handsome?" Despite the playful, edging-on-flirtatious tone, it was a serious question.
The answer came from V himself, when he had for his mate a full kiss that seemed to sear on contact. V took his hand away only to press into the back of Garrett's head, bringing their mouths even closer as though there'd been any room. A gesture so simple, so pure of heart, it dragged him from the state of his mind to a place of feeling: warm, red and rosy, up in the air but heavy and suffocating, soft, fuzzy, perfumed—fangs on his ribs, crunching.
He'd been lost in it for the littlest while. He was almost dizzy when the kiss broke, like he'd swam back up from the deep before he'd drowned. It took three, four good breaths before he dove in again, curling his arms around Garrett's neck and sitting himself lower, responding only to the excited flutter of his heart, a thing desperate to escape the coming jaws. But he wanted to be in them, and if he gave the wolf the chance, he knew he'd be eaten up. That didn't sound so terrible right now, in all honesty.

🎮🎶💯👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 for jen aaaand (uno reverse) 🐉💔💘🖤😞 for genieda
prompts here
jennnnnn 🐑
🎮 VIDEO GAME CONTROLLER — what are three of your oc’s favorite hobbies?
she's a sucker for wood carving (and working, by extension), puzzles, and anything to do with textiles, in particular screen printing. she doesn't do it as much, particularly the more hands on stuff, but give her a puzzle and she's distracted for ages.
🎶 MUSICAL NOTES — what type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often?
as for a genre, her regular listening does fall into the very broad category of 'rock', but she's fine with almost anything. doesn't necessarily have a preference, because it's dependent on her mood and why she's listening. if it's to like listen to other local bands and/or competition, then it's more of a focus on what they do, not just the music. if it's for her own leisure and pleasure, it's probably just the radio playing in the background. constantly has some form of music on though, half-jokingly but kind of seriously like a soundtrack to her life following her through even just doing the dishes.
💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know.
jen is kind of a conspiracy nut, like the wormhole reading late at night that sucks her in. worked hard to reduce her stutter, insofar that like, those she met in high school aren't even aware she has one. has a fear of forests, refuses to consider them.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 FAMILY WITH MOTHER, FATHER, SON AND DAUGHTER — how many people are in your oc’s immediate family? how many people are in your oc’s extended family? do they have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? who in their family are they closest with? are they close with their birth family, or do they have a found family?
yeah she's got her parents who are like. off doing their own thing. her dad's parents basically raised her, but by the time of infamous her grandma has passed. her maternal grandparents don't talk to her, has about four aunts on her mum's side with a spattering of cousins she doesn't know the names of. on her dad's side, has an uncle who has like. a kid that jen is vaguely aware of. but is also convinced the uncle is paying child support for at least twelve kids, whose to say. she's close with her granddad (and grandma before she passed), but definitely the home is in the friends... even if it is a lil fractured underneath.
ganieda (i cannae believe u spelt her name wrong FOR SHAME)
🐉 DRAGON — what is your oc’s favorite mythical creature?
okay like considering that dragons and griffons are rly common, ganieda is like fascinated by the simple house cat. they're so odd, but also like found everywhere. obsessed with picking them up, despite whatever may happen. otherwise, warclaws probably. something about the mist...
💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc’s negative traits?
reactive, unreliable, uncooperative. to start with lol, but mostly due to her kind of primary focus within the priory and kind of ignoring literally everyone for the sake of her work, its got her a lot of association with being an all around negative person, not someone many want to work with.
💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?
the lil carved fern hound around her neck. with no possible emotional attachment there to anything else of course but it is definitely only the fern hound. yknow.
🖤 BLACK HEART — has your oc killed or seriously wounded anyone before? have they broken someone’s heart and/or broken someone’s trust?
okay i mean to be fair if she fights to kill, she fights to kill. very rarely does it end up with simply wounding. especially as in her line of work prior to being thrown around with all the dragon god war things, like sometimes she had to make the first move. sometimes, she removed a thug on the road who pissed her off enough. sometimes, she took out the bandits first. and then sometimes she's been pissed off in a bar hard enough to break a glass against someone's face without quite knowing her own strength.
it's all perspective on breaking a heart. but she definitely has.
😞 DISAPPOINTED FACE — does your oc attract others, or do they tend to be left alone?
if ganieda has attracted anyone, it's not really been picked up by her. granted, most people tend to also give her a wide berth, in the sort of observation way. pretty flower perception way. there have been times where ganieda has been aware, and acted on that attraction, but she definitely is very aware that the vibes she gives off are rancid. the layer of filth as she's bog diving probably doesn't help.

Do you have any ideas for witch or specialist side characters? I was always pretty interested in Cloud Tower and the stuff they were teaching there after the revelation that Griffon wasnt evil and actually very willing to work with the other schools. Red Fountain never really got a whole lot of focus either which is a shame from a worldbuilding perspective imo but I kinda get it given that the show was very targeted towards girls (although Im not a big fan of the schools being seperated by gender either lol)
I have a couple of specialists in mind, but besides that not really
I agree though, this could be a nice opportunity for positive witch and specialist rep. Especially witches.
Considering this is a post Valtor and post Ancestral Witches era, I don't see why the schools couldn't change with the times. Fusing Alfea and Red Fountain into one, forging better relations between witches and fairies etc Which the idea of uniting the schools in case of future attacks and stuff
The two specialists I have in mind are Manuel (Roxy's boyfriend from the comics) and Krystal's currently unnamed asshole boyfriend. (Dw I'm doing sapphic Roxy, she's just figuring out her sexuality over the course of the story)

The speeches are long and dull. Halfway through, catching the sidelong glances of the human nobles and the not-so-hushed whispers of the elvhen servants, Virelan begins to wonder why she was summoned here.
She knows why. Oh, she knows. She is the great hero of the modern age, saviour of Thedas from its most recent brush with disaster, and the Queen Cousland, up upon her podium with her crown and her long speech, is the last.
This is a commemoration of the bravery of all people, not just of Ferelden, but of Orlais, the Free Marches, of the Dalish and the Dwarves. And so on, says the queen. And on, and on.
“It’s a godsdammned bore is what it is,” Virelan mutters into her drink. Honey ale. It’s nice, but too light. “Can they make me tranquil? Reaving’s a sort of magic, isn’t it?”
Beside her, her friend and confidante and advisor, but in this moment also her worst enemy, since she is the main reason they are here, chuckles.
“Be nice,” Josephine hushes.
“Be nice if they got on with serving some food already,” Virelan counters grumpily.
The Lady Montilyet raises a napkin to her lips to hide her giggle.
The evening draws on and ever on. Eventually there’s food. It’s good, rich, in the Ferelden style. There’s entertainment. It’s bad. Tasteless jokes for the amassed masses and weak tricks with no magic. She swears she catches the queen yawning.
After, they are let loose to mingle and wander the grounds, though some area are, of course, restricted. It is just like that night at the Winter Palace, she thinks, except no one is plotting to have her killed. Which is still a damn shame.
Virelan wanders as far as she can. She has no reason to snoop and spy, no motive and no left arm with which to go clambering up garden trellises, but she still stalks off into corners as shadowed and quiet as she can find. There’s a garden, and it’s admittedly quite lovely; rosebushes and local flora, trimmed up near the castle walls, but unkempt around the edges. She finds an old stone statue within its depths and admires its crumbling grace for a time, trying not to think about other things which have turned to stone, nor other things with crumbling grace.
“Am I disturbing you?”
Virelan’s first instinct, even at a soft voice such as this, is to turn with a hand at her hip. Of course, she’s not armed tonight, so her fist clenches and releases with reluctance as she turns to face the smiling queen.
“Not at all, Your Majesty.”
The Ferelden queen is less pretty, up close. There are crows feet stepping in towards the corners of her eyes, a few licks of grey sweeping through the darkly dyed — and it must be dyed, for it is not quite black, in the moonlight, but tinged in purple — locks of her hair which wind away behind her crown. The circlet itself can hardly be called a crown, it is a dark, brassy gold, roughly hammered and decorated with no gems, only the risen emblems of griffon wings to either side of the woman’s temples.
She’s not tall, either, not as she seemed up in her place in the hall. A little taller than Virelan, but only a little. There are tired circles under her clear blue eyes.
“Violet only, please.” She smiles, and though the rest of her countenance betrays age and experience, the smile is young. “Quieter here, isn’t it?”
A surprising rush of shame fills Virelan’s cheeks. She shakes it off, makes to return it to the queen with a few gruff words. “Apologies, I know I am a guest of some honour, you’d like me seen and spoken about, no doubt.”
The queen’s youthful smile falters. “No,” she says slowly, turning slightly as though to appraise her roses, though the corner of her eye still watches Virelan. “You are indeed a guest of honour, you are entitled to your comfort.”
Virelan’s waiting for the double-edge. She knows who this woman is, after all. A politician, a noble and a queen at that, one who rose from orphaned Teyrn’s daughter to hero, to ruler. And she is a rogue as well, famously a tricky one, if the many songs about her are to be believed.
“These things wear on me, I thought from your look at dinner that I might have found a friend in that. But I’ll leave you to your peace, Inquisitor.”
That’s all she says. A cape, cloak-like but not hooded in any shadows, nor laced with any hidden daggers — Virelan could tell if it were — flows out behind her as she turns.
“Majesty,” Virelan calls, hesitantly.
The queen turns back, her small, youthful smile only slightly rogueish. “Violet, really.”
“Violet,” Virelan allows. “then it is Virelan, please.”
“Virelan.” The rogue Grey Warden queen of storied fame takes a step towards her, still smiling.
The queen pauses, turning to the roses again, and plucks a hidden dagger out from some impossible place inside her thigh. Virelan had not noted that. For a moment, she tenses, fists clenched. The queen takes her knife to a rosebush, and cuts away a flower. Then she comes forward again, holding up both dagger and rose in a show of innocence.
“For my honoured guest.” She offers out the rose.
Virelan takes it between two fingers.
“Careful, thorns.”
“I’m not afraid of a little prick.”
She didn’t mean to make her, but the queen laughs. She laughs, youthful smile full and brassy crown glinting as she throws her head back, and it is a very pretty sound.
“You’re staying a number of days, are you not?”
Virelan only looks at the flower and nods.
“I thought I could invite you — do you still ride?” Violet catches her own speech with a wary glance over Virelan’s lacking left arm, left free of its prosthetic for this evening, wrapped only in a loose, tied sleeve of her equally loose, and rather plain, dress. The occasion was something to dress up for, Josephine insisted, but there had been a compromise achieved as to how much.
“I ride.” Virelan looks into the woman’s pretty blue eyes sharply, and is satisfied to see her wince.
“Of course. Then there are some lovely, quiet spots in the surrounding country. I thought tomorrow, perhaps, we could go riding.”
She smiles again, and Virelan says, “why?”
“Because the country is lovely and quiet,” repeats the queen with a smirk.
“What are you playing at? Be out with it.” Virelan has had enough of this humour.
“Playing?” Yet Virelan’s brusque words have no effect on the playful smile, “as I said, I thought perhaps I could make a friend in my… boredom.” The queen winks.
Virelan rolls her eyes, or she rolls one, the other remains fixed and intimidating as it always does, glowing with its gold and lyrium. Then, she glances down once again at her gifted rose.
Everyone in Ferelden knows roses are the symbol of the king and queen’s union, and Josephine made certain that if nothing else, Virelan at least knew that.
“And are you bored with your husband, as well?” she prods.
Once again, without Virelan’s meaning to make her, the rogue queen laughs.
“No,” she says, and the assurance is honest even if she is still laughing, “not at all. But he is travelling with his own — our own — paramour, and perhaps I am a little jealous at that.”
These are treasonous secrets.
“Why tell me so much?” Virelan regards her, still suspiciously, though she cannot deny that the continued winks and smiles are tempting.
“Do you want to come riding, or not?”
Violet leans in, close. A delicate scent comes with her, blackberries and — and violets. She rests a hand on Virelan’s shoulder, gentle, firm. Her breath ghosts across Virelan’s lips.
The moment is an enchanting one; floral scented, moonlit, backdopped in distant murmurs and music. The romance in the air is something Virelan had thought to accept as faded, and yet…
Why not seize it?
She does. With her own arm, Virelan grips Violet about the waist. She takes her recently smirking lips in a push of her own, and kisses her. Violet returns it, relaxes into it without ulterior motive or the reaching for daggers. Both her hands take Virelan’s broad shoulders, her mouth opens, her lips are petal soft and her tongue is wet. Virelan presses the kiss to continue into another, an unbreaking line of enveloping lips from which she does not desire any release. It ends when she allows it, easing Violet away and releasing her hold around her waist with a slight push.
Violet opens her eyes, hands still at Virelan’s shoulders, and breathes out impressed, eager, heavy breaths.

Devil May Cry 2 (Dante) Missions 14-18 Ending
Did you think I had forgotten?
Did you think I would ever forget?
Strap in, it’s time for the worst part of Dante’s campaign
Mission 14 is the absolute pits. It’s shit. It’s the second worst level in this game
Why is it so shit?
It wants to be an exploration focused stage: you have to find and activate 4 hidden switches in order to end the level.
Simple premise.
Totally fucked by this being DMC2
Where to begin?
How about with the fact that this level, much like all the others, looks incredibly dull and lifeless, and everywhere looks the fucking same?
Orienting yourself in this stage is beyond awful, there’s nothing interesting or memorable with its level design, there are no set pieces, you can’t move the camera on your own to look for the hidden switches meaning you’ll have to jump around every 5 seconds to see if you can get a glimpse of one, the camera continuously switches angles as you go through the level making exploration extra awkward, the enemies mess with your lock on meaning you have to beat them before hitting a switch, there’s this Silent Hill-like fog effect that makes it harder to spot things at a distance (in a level that’s all about finding 4 hidden orbs).
And the map? As you can see however from when I show it to you it doesn’t keep track of your position, simply giving you the general layout of the stage. In other words it’s practically worthless.
To all Sonic fans watching this: I would 100% much rather be playing Mad Space, because while that stage has its own problems it’s at least much more memorable in terms of design, with each planetoid having a distinct shape,it controls well enough (gravity shenanigans notwithstanding) and you have a radar. A crappy one, but it’s better than absolutely nothing.
Lost Impact is technically worse since it’s bigger, more intricate and has you hunting down way more things (in the Hero mission), but at least Shadow doesn’t move like he’s on molasses and has far snappier gun play
And you know what? At least you only really have to do the Hero mission once.
In DMC2 you’ll have to go through this stage a second time as Lucia only the locations of the switches will be different. Fuck. Off.
And the best part? This is the SECOND worst stage in the game! Lucia gets the cherry on top of this shit sunday, just you wait and see.
And at the end you fight Phantom. Y’know the first boss from DMC1, like that at random, with no explanation.
The following boss fights are either a much tankier version of the Infested Chopper in the form of Trismagia (hope you upgraded your guns) or absolute clusterfucks of enemies that pounce you without rhyme or reason as you try to take out the boss.
And then finally we end with Argosax.
The first phase is just an amalgamation of most bosses in the game (plus Griffon from DMC1 who’s just there for no reason). You stand in one angle and just keep spamming that shoot button until you either drain his GARGANTUAN health bar, or your controller fucking breaks.
The second phase is technically the closest thing to a genuine DMC boss fight in this game, as it has an actual pattern that you have to dodge because he hurts like hell.
Unfortunately since Dante’s movements are so sluggish this boss ends up being way more annoying than challenging.
And you can just whip out the Majin Devil Trigger anyway
It’s a hidden mechanic that the game never tells you about: if you activare Devil Trigger while you have only a tiny bit of health left you turn into an even more powerful demon. Not only do you do OBSCENE amounts of damage but you’re 100% invincible for the duration of the form. It’s a hidden win button that I have no shame in using here because
Fuck
this
game.
.....and now it’s time for Lucia.
sigh....
(where the fuck did Dante get that bike, he didn’t have it with him when he entered the portal?)

Tell me some as-of-yet unrevealed MagiMonster lore.
Sure thing! (WHISTLES)
Tumblr media
This is Olympia. Funny Griffon MagiMonster and Champion of Athena. Now Olympia, would you kindly show your right arm to our friends?
Tumblr media
Much better. Thank you Olympia! You might notice that Olympia has a weird contraption atached to her arm. This is what is called an arm amulet. An "armulet", if you will! It was granted to her by Athena as part of the Champion Contract and has two effects:
First of all, it is the main catalyst for Olympia's MagiMonster transformation. It also allows her to store her weapons into a pocket dimension that allows her to store as many weapons as possible. You know how inventory in video games work? Yeah? Imagine this, but IRL. Pocket dimension inventory! Yippie!
The second effect is that it basically allows her to use her paralyzed right arm again.
See, Olympia had to fight Athena to become the Griffon MagiMonster and become her champion. However, it so happens that during that fight, Olympia (in her human form, hasn't become a MagiMonster yet, might I mention) draws the Sword of Achilles in a fight against Athena. Athena, justifiably, lost it because HOW do you just bring a Legendary Class Weapon in a fight?? Have you no shame? What the HELL!? and paralyzed her right arm and cursed her to never be able to carry a legendary-class weapon ever again. Olympia thus had to fight Athena with only a left hand and a lousy makeshift sword she found on the sidewalk.
And she won.
Athena felt bad about paralyzing her right arm but it (along with the legendary weapon curse) was part of the contract. So she gave her the Armulet(tm) to basically apply a fix-it bandaid on Olympia and allow her to live a normal life while having a cool ability + jewelry. Isn't that nice?
That was a fight for sure!
