Great Wall, Arches National Park (No. 4)

During the lower Triassic Period the area of Arches National Park was covered by a shallow, marine sea and the reddish-brown mudstone, sandstone, and siltstone layers of the Moenkopi Formation were deposited. Tectonic activity decreased on the western margin of the supercontinent formed by the earlier collision of Gondwana and Laurasia. Sea level rose relative to the land and then dropped again, changing the shoreline and causing red beds to be deposited. These red beds are rust colored because when these sediment beds were exposed to air the iron in the sediment oxidized, a common feature of sedimentary rocks of this age throughout the southwest region.

During much of the Jurassic, the climate of the region that is now Arches National Park was desert-like, much like the modern Saharan Desert, with vast sand seas called ergs. The Wingate Formation was deposited during the lower Jurassic Period due to the erosion of sandstones, which were transported by wind and contains crossbedding and well-sorted quartz grains. Above the Wingate is the Kayenta Formation, also a Jurassic deposit, with abundant current ripple marks suggest a fluvial (river) environment. Above the Kayenta Formation is the Navajo Sandstone, a thick unit containing abundant groups of inclined layers, known as cross beds, which preserve ancient wind patterns. The Navajo Sandstone and the Entrada Sandstone are two of the major arch-forming formations within Arches National Park.

You’ve been traveling with Willam and his group since Pero joined. You and him have been childhood friends, therefore you had a connection to him that most didn’t have the pleasure of having. His grumpiness scares people off, but being as close as you always were with him, you got to see the playful, albeit still quiet and stern, side of him. 

It’s been a particularly rough day. It was the evening and the loss of your group had been devastating. You all have reached the last run of your journey for the black powder. Will, Pero, and you were the last survivors. Being caught by an army late this morning, witnessing green monsters, and finally, to your close friend’s delight, a filling dinner. 

You sit on your firm, creaky bed. Sharing a room with the two boys, yet only one present. 

“Hm? Where’s Will?” Softly blurting the question out loud. 

“Probably ravaging the commander girl, no?” The fellow Spaniard spoke with a hint of humor to his tone. 

“Pfft. You are most likely right.” You let out a breathy chuckle back. Being alone with him has been accompanied with a lingering sexual tension as of late. Biting your lip you remembered the times when you were young, when life was simpler. Having a one sided romance for him, you’d pick wild flowers, forge him crowns from nature. He never liked it when you put them on him, typically giving it back by placing them atop your head and whispering compliments in your shared native tongue. He’d call you bonita, pretty. It always put a blush on your cheeks; he’d tease you about it of course, but it was always worth it. 

You were startled out of your daze by a snap. Pero stared intently at your face. 

“What are you thinking, bonita?” 

“How some things never change.” You replied with a gentle smile. You were more soft spoken, a stark contrast to his gruffness. 

The two of you sat in silence for a few moments, both sitting on your respective beds. 

“Mph..” he grumbled. 

“Is something wrong, Pero?” You leaned towards his bed, closing the gap slightly. 

“Have you noticed?” 

“Noticed what?” Peeking up curiously, you tilted your head to the side. 

“How we are drawn to each other. Ever since youth.” 

“You remember the wildflowers?”

“Sí, sí! Those were magnifico! I miss those days. Calm, loving.” He moved to sit next to you. 

“After-“ you gulped, nervous from the close proximity, “after this is over… we could go back to that, yes?” 

“Hermosa..” he purred in your ear, stubble tickling your cheek. “Why wait..?” He tugged on your earlobe with his teeth. 

Shuddering as a response, he took that as a sign to continue. Nipping down your neck until he got to the thin skin of your collar bone. 

“Mmmhhh..” you sighed constantly. “But… mi amor. You never loved me.. not like-“ a whimper broke your sentence as he pulled away, “not like you are loving me now.” 

He cupped your cheek on either side. While cradling your face, he looked you in the eye. “But I have. I have loved you. I do love you.” He pushed his lips to your own. A gentle passion grew feverish as the moment progressed. The way he kissed you was the only confirmation you needed. 

You pulled his tunic up, not breaking apart until it was dragged up over his head. Panting, forehead to forehead, he unbuttoned your blouse and you shrugged it off your shoulders. 

“Oh hermosa.” He growled at the sight of your hardened nipples like a feral animal ready to devour its prey.

He rested his head at the base of your neck, smelling in your scent. His calloused hands kneaded your breasts as he trailed wet kisses down your sternum. 

“A-ah! Mierda!” The curse was following the large gasp that erupted from you as he encapsulated your perky bud into his warm mouth. 

He pulled away with a ‘tsk-tsk’, “what a naughty mouth you have. You should be punished.” 

You purred as he brushed his teeth around the previously untouched nipple. He bit down on the sensitive skin which made your breath hitch. 

“I- L-mnngh..” you tried to get words out, but when he pinched your other bundle of nerves, your sentence was lost in your throat. 

“Sí, mi amor?” He smirked against your breast. 

“Lower..! I-I need you in me, Pero!” You gasped out as his smirk widened. 

He purred into your ear as he stuck a finger through your folds. “Like this?” 

You bit your lip and squeezed your eyes shut at the sensation. 

“You’re so tight.” He breathed, then halted as the realization dawned on him. “Bonita? Are you still pure..?” 

You blushed and nodded in mild embarrassment. You knew of the many women your companion has bedded and your lack of experience made you shy. 

His eyes widened, “ Are-Are you sure you wish to do this with me..? You sweet hermosa, are you sure you want me to taint your innocence..?” You detected a hint of insecurity in his tone, he was worried you’d reject him. 

Your gentle nod turned vigorous, “yes! Yes, Pero, please!” 

His finger slipped out of you to then brush through your slick. Smearing it in your thighs. He pulled up your skirts as he laid his forehead against yours. 

“Are you ready? I’ll go slow for you, Bonita.” You nodded and his tip started brushing against your slit before gently slipped into you. Just the head had you clenching. “Relax for me, no? It’ll feel better soon, bear with it for a bit longer.” 

With another slow, methodical push, he sheathed himself in you. You could feel his tip pushing against your cervix with a pleasurable pressure. 

The air was sucked out of your lungs as he leaned down to kiss you. A fiery kiss, filled to the brink with desire and desperation. He started to shift against the soft tissue of your inside as he moved. 

His smooth long thrusts made you squirm. 

“You’re doing so good for me, mí amor.” His breath was hitching. “Your sweet pussy is sucking me in.” He grunted. “Mierda.. so.. fuckin’.. tight..” he whispered that last sentence as an afterthought. 

“Faster… faster.. pleaaase!” You whined and he instantly complied, excited that you’ve adjusted. 

The thrusts were short, fast, and sloppy. The sound of flesh slapping echoed in a loop off the stone walls of the foreign chamber. 

He grunted in your ear, “mmmhm.. c-close.. hermosa.. so close- hhnng!” You we’re too.. and when the pressure finally exploded in you, the grip your walls had on his member made him release his bliss. 

You could feel the warm, thick liquid spill inside you. Filling you with a sweet full feeling. You both panted and he pulled out, the seed he squirted inside you, leaked. He spread your folds with his index and middle finger and watched as your combined juices spilled. 

“Hot..” he whispered before lowering his head and swiping his tongue through your folds, collecting the sweet nectar in one long lick. Your sensitive nub made you shiver at his contact. 

The exhaustion falling over you, he tidied your dress and curled next to you, pulling a blanket. 

“I love you, my sweet Bonita.” He sighed with wholesome content, yet you were already asleep. You didn’t hear his confession, but you knew it either way. 

You loved each other.

Great Walls of Benin - Benin City, Edo, Nigeria - Destroyed 1897 - Ellen Harvey

"The Great Walls of Benin were a series of more than 500 interconnected earth walls (Edo: Lya) in the area around present-day Benin City. They extended for some 16,000 km in all, took an estimated 150 million hours of digging to construct and were perhaps the largest single manmade site on the planet. The date of their construction is unknown, with estimates ranging from the first millennium to the 15th century. The Walls were ravaged by the British in 1897 in the “Punitive Expedition” led by Rear-Admiral Harry Rawson in retaliation for the so-called “Benin Massacre” (a surprise attack on British forces attempting to capture Benin City.) Much of the art looted at the time is still on display at the British Museum. Scattered remains of the Walls exist today, although many are being torn down to make space for real estate development.

"I was born and raised in southern Nigeria in a town called Warri, Bendel State; the capital was Benin City. I always knew about the Benin people and culture as I had family, friends, classmates, and neighbors who were from the Benin tribe. I was even more fascinated by the Benin tradition, kingdom, people, and history while at the Benson Idahosa University in Benin City. As part of my study at, I took a course called Nigerian People and Culture and I was completely stunned by the history I was surrounded by. I had walked past ruins, heard parables, tales, etc. not understanding their history. The Great Benin Walls were a masterpiece that cannot be forgotten, their history can be seen even to this day in its ruins.
