5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes and no. Not like I should. I am so deeply, truly grateful for every single one.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Well, I killed William in Inhaling the Different Dawn, but that wasn’t at the end.

Maybe Where The Vines Cling Crimson? Scully’s cancer comes back and her fate is ambiguous. And I had Scully kill Emily in Alabaster Stones. But I think that was the right ending for both of them.

As a mother? A Basket of Reeds, where Scully gives William away. I can’t even reread it without a lump in my throat, man.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Tent of Shelter is fluffy and lovely gets a lot of love, and was inspired by a STUNNING manip by @avocadoave but I personally think In The Gale. It’s the one that, to me, feels the most like a grownup relationship of two people processing some trauma. I think that’s an ending that’s happy and also real - like “I don’t love being broken, but I can survive being broken with you.” Two abeyances that lean…

Foxfire for similar reasons. I real love that little story, which I wrote thanks to @perplexistan

I’m 43. I’ve been married for well over two decades and let me tell you that young love is a gift and mature love is a craft.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Some! And that’s really great too, that people read words I wrote and felt so passionately that they left me words about those feelings. What a strange but profound compliment!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do. PWP isn’t my personal taste so even though I wrote a LOT of smut for the old pornbattles at LJ I wanted the smut to still tell a story.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I can’t say it’s especially crazy, but Fern Hill is a Mulder/Stella Gibson crossover. There are a few little ficlets with XF/Silence of the Lambs crossovers in my Inbox Prompts series.

Oh fuck! Wait! I wrote a Fall/Hannibal/XF crossover called Anthemoessa where Stella, Scully, and Bedelia all meet. Okay that’s it. That wins.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Years ago. God, isn’t that sad? To need positive reinforcement that much?

Yes! It was SUCH a compliment!

I think I do pretty good banter and my education makes me pretty good at the sciencey bits.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I get too lost in descriptions and I try too hard to be clever. I do my best to self edit but sometimes I reread things and I’m like oh my GOD SHUT YOUR PRETENTIOUS ASS UP.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I’ve done it for Bedelia and Hannibal in Italian. I’m not sure I understand the question?

19. First fandom you wrote for?

TXF, my one true love.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I don’t know that I have a favorite per se. I am most proud of the ones that challenged me to do something outside my comfort zone. Samson is one of mytop fives even though it’s Mulder/Diana. I think I did a nice job. I also wrote Pair of Aces/Double or Nothing which is Scully/Byers.

But I do really love the world of Petrichor and Singing of Mount Abora, and I like the cases.

Elu is hesitant in new things but tries to keep an open mind. It’s difficult to adjust because she is unsure of what would happen if she tries something new and it might end up a bad experience. Not to mention growing up in an isolated village doesn’t give her enough exposure to foreign cultures.

Locals in her homeland know her to be a strong-willed girl who can be brutally honest because she intends to fix the problem right away, she believes that sugar-coating would delay the solution and make it worse. Though she does feel a little bad if someone cries from her criticism.

Being a beastman, she is very agile with a keen sense of smell as well as strength that surpasses humans. She often goes out hunting with the older members of the group and she displays full cooperation with other teammates.

But another thing to note is that she is a black bear beastman, her temperament is calm but she has a thin patience and she will growl or roar in anger. Despite being so small, she has incredible physical strength.

One thing she dislikes is when the team is unstable and problematic, she would quickly abandon that group and do the job herself or find another that’s got their heads together. She’d rather have the task done quickly and efficiently with no side tracking.

Unfortunately, this gives off the impression that she’s cold and unsociable which is far from the truth. She just needs to tone down a little bit.

Elu is actually mature and gives advice for those who can’t look after themselves. She enjoys the simple things in life and can have her moments where she spouts words of wisdom that makes others think she’s a wise, old sage.

Hometown: Bearland Woods

Family History

She grew up in a village where the locals rarely or never interact with outsiders. They aren’t against having outsiders visit but it was clear they don’t know how to handle interacting with people living different lifestyles.

The villagers are all beastmen who are mostly of the bear genus, though there are some who are deer and raccoon. Everyone knows each other and treat each other as if they were all family. Which means they don’t stand idly by if one of them gets hurt.

But they’ve been especially wary of outsiders after a group of shady businessmen started causing problems for them. Some of their people were imprisoned and branded as the bad guys when they retaliated.

They know nothing about the modern laws of the urban society and are pressured to take deals that would only benefit the other party. Thankfully, her father was a firm man and kept refusing them every time. But it won’t be long until they use every influence they have to chase them out of their home.

Elu is upset by these people and how they seem to be driven by their greed. It doesn’t help that they would disrupt the environment with their logging and illegal dumping.

Unlike city folk, life in her village was simple yet satisfying. They take what they need from the forest while also respecting the cycle of life. They don’t hunt out of vanity or pride. The males usually do the hunting but there have been women who are capable enough to hunt alongside them.

Due to Elu’s elder brother being born with weak body, she has taken the task of hunting for food and foraging. She has been taught knowledge on how to traverse the land and recognize edible and non-edible plants from her father.

Childhood Memories

Elu has a fond memory of her father protecting her from a bison that wandered too close, her father struggled but he overpowered the animal and sent it away from their borders. His tall stature and rough features may have come off as intimidating to others but to Elu he was her hero.

She wanted to be like him so she does everything she can to make him proud. Even courageously taking the chance to leave home to attend DCA in order to help their village.

There was an unpleasant memory where she was told to stay in the house by her father but she got curious and peeked to see these formally dressed businessmen. Whatever they said made her father mad, he eventually sent them away.

But what happened after that was scarred into her memory, a couple of houses in her village were suddenly set ablaze, her brother nearly losing his life when he was trapped in the rubble.

She smelled the source of the fire when the businessmen returned, they smelled like gasoline, when she cried out that they were the culprits. They mocked her by asking if they even have any solid evidence as well as a lawyer, implying that her village wouldn’t win because they have the money and power to make it their victory.

Elu’s rage from what the businessmen said made her determined to focus for the benefit of her village but this in turn made her closed off to outsiders. Afraid they would be like the businessmen, lying through their teeth.

Like Jinlong, she has trouble adjusting to the school life due to the culture shock. So, she often keeps to herself while occasionally asking the professors for advice when Elu feels like there was no other option. Which is the reason why she struggled a lot at first.

Not to mention, she doesn’t understand the concept of idol concerts and what the purpose of this was. She isn’t familiar with the pop songs or rock, she was more of a traditionalist but she felt like not many people would be interested in that.

She was at a loss for what she was doing and if she was even trying hard enough. Until Perrine approached her and made Elu comfortable enough to finally figure out how to get used to the school environment and subjects enough to guarantee her that she won’t need to drop out of school.

Putting her inventing skills to use, she does a lot of favors in exchange for what she needs, be it some notes or tutoring. In time, she got better and has gained a reputation for herself in school. Elu thinks that it’s only a small group but in reality she helped a lot of people and they admire her a lot.

Her grades are fairly decent but it was clear that she started to improve the more she managed to understand the foreign subjects. Not among the top students but still high around the B grade.

An excellent archery shooter who can shoot with high accuracy even when on horseback. She is known to even shoot arrows through ring holes as small as a pinky finger.

School Relationships

Elu mostly kept to herself and her “strictly business” attitude made it difficult for idle chit chat. It wasn’t until she was forced to seek out the help of other students that she learns to communicate more.

Even though she was still a bit professional, she at least made progress. She’s learned to try out new things little by little and learn more about new topics.

Perrine was the first to approach her and wasn’t thrown off by Elu’s reluctance. She managed to win her over just a bit with food because who doesn’t? Plus, it would help the girl relax a little and feel welcome.

Rozeline and Elu started off as acquaintances who exchanged information of interest until they became close enough to consider each other as friends in a way. Elu figured she could gain knowledge she needed from Rozeline and in turn can hope to put her issues in the urban public.

Elu found Rozeline’s inventions innovative and would take notes from her, but she’s sure to also provide her own feedback on how to make it eco-friendly while still efficient.

Jinlong was an enigma to Elu, she has never seen other beastmen let alone something like a dragonkin like Jinlong. So, she is both intrigued but also intimidated. When she got to know Jinlong by chance, she began to admire her. Their goals were different but they both relate to feeling out of place, but unlike Elu who was hesitant at first, Jinlong pushed through and got to her position.

Skilli sees Elu as this lost bear cub who is figuring out the right path, but with so many things she doesn’t know, finding the right path seems impossible. Skilli’s form is from Elu’s desire to find the way to settle her problems that won’t end in turmoil.

Skilli shares her knowledge to Elu as well as guide her to opening her eyes to new things she won’t find from the comforts of her home. Skilli teaches her how to cherish those differences in order to understand the world better. The fairy is the wisest and the most patient out of all the dorm fairies.

Matelot

She is a woodpecker and acts as Elu’s scout, always on the lookout for anything of interest from the treetops. Matelot often marks using symbols that Elu recognizes, she even knows Morse code.

Matelot is very quiet and likes to hide her presence, often scaring people and other animals when she starts pecking away. An animal of very little words, she talks softly into people’s ears before leaving the conversation.

Tala

She is a gypsy vanner horse with a calm temperament. No matter what chaos goes on in the background she just goes, “Oh, the usual?” then does her own thing. But when it’s an emergency, she can go from calm to serious when needed.

Elu often rides on her back to drive away approaching danger. Tala is also powerful enough to push away fallen trees and break small boulders.

Her Unique Magic is called, “Arrow of the Wind”, she can control any direction her arrows to follow her targets with a special wind spell that only she can cast. She can make the wind faster and therefore have a greater impact on the arrows.

She can also use it as a shield, any projectiles within her line of sight can be slowed down or be redirected back to her opponent.

Elu’s magical capability is mostly nature based. Though these abilities are used to benefit her village more than mainly using them for combat, unless she needed to as a last resort. She seeks to use her skills in creating more contraptions that make life easier but not at the cost of the ecosystem.

Mato Sorrel

The chief of their village, he is a large bear beastman who is strong enough to carry about five pine logs. He is having trouble with the businessmen who try to trespass their land and try to trick him into signing a ‘beneficial’ contract, he refuses every time because he didn’t have the opportunity to gain outside knowledge. He isn’t narrow-minded to think that outsiders are greedy but he just hopes that his daughter will be able to handle herself in the academy and hopefully bring an end to the trespassers.

Alo Sorrel (23)

He has a weak body so he isn’t able to hunt or participate in activities involving strength, he chooses to help the village to advance economically while keeping the environment in mind. He often sends letters to Elu to inform her what has been happening in the village. He feels guilty that he can’t do much to prevent trespassers from walking all over their homeland due to his weak body.

The character’s name, “Elu” means “Full of Grace” and is a name of Native American origin while the last name, “Sorrel”, means “reddish brown”. The artist just thought this last name sounded better fitting for the character despite the meaning.

Elu’s dorm, Sagamore, was considered to be the equivalent of the Savanaclaw in NRC. Most of the students there are beastmen much like Savanaclaw. Though, Dragonstone, also shares this comparison but Sagamore has more beastmen than Dragonstone does.

She was originally going to be written with the same wise and calm personality like Pocahontas but then it was changed to be a tougher personality with the sense of adventure and navigation like John Smith. The calm personality went to her brother.

The artist chose to assign a bear to Elu as a nod to Brother Bear as well as to fit the characteristic of someone that looks cute but is actually fierce.

Elu was the hardest to design since the first design had too much details and took the longest to draw, not to mention drawing a mechanical bow was difficult for the artist since contraptions are tricky.

The artist is open to criticism and opinions regarding Native American culture since the internet isn’t always helpful.

Space cowboy

A/N -So i haven't actually wrote in a V long time. Im not one to finish stories but i hope i can finish this or make consistency in this.

Will i make this more adult?

Probably im a sucker for smut... But it will be in later chapters hopefully and with warning and not Plot driven. So you wouldn't NEED to read it. Anyway

-Sam Coe x Captain Reader

-Loosely based off my own Character in StarField. By that i mean my stats and heavy choices through the game

The meeting-

"And you must be the Latest poor fool to get dragged into our dysfunctional little family"

A bearded man says to you as you walk through the doors of the Green house

"woah Dont overwelcome me now, i might never leave..." You give a small smile, shifting your weight onto one leg

"Just a friendly jab, small group like this, youll learn more about everyone than you ever wanted to. Kinda like how family is in a way"

A kid cuts him off

"Like more than you'd ever want to know Hello Kids are around People! Cora Coe by the way Hi-Hi" she steps forward a bit

"Good to meet you Cora" you smile at the kid looking back up at her assuming dad

"Nice to meet anyone brave enough to fly the frontier" she keeps going giving a mischievous smile

"Know a bit about space craft do we?" Sarah cuts in for a small word

Sam turns around quickly "Hey dont spook our new friend- Frontiers a fine ship...honest"

"Now lets talk business Sarah tell you about the expodition?" He turns back to you.

And with that small meeting your journey with sam begins although you both were quiet unaware.

Sam, Cora and you head to the ship. Cora Ooing and Ahing at the ships details and the decor you had. Even pulling some books out of your shelf to read the description.

You smiled at the image, never had a kid in your ship let alone one so interested in the things you had

"My ship my rules Sam Coe"

You turn around placing down your helmet

"Yes Ma'am im listening" Sam stops his eyes from looking at your ship and finally looks at you. Without your helmet for once. Slightly amazed by how beautiful you were considering the mission you had just got back from.

"This is your home as much as its mine. The kid gets the bed...ill figure out something for us. Oh and Its Captain to you from now on.. Im not old enough to be a 'ma'am'..." You turn back around and head to the cockpit. Sam following after you

He chuckled a bit at what you said. And sits next to you.

"Alright Captain"

Soon you arive at Akila city. The grav jumping made Sam increasingly more excited or happy. You gather your things and begin to leave the cockpit. Sam getting up to talk to Cora

You turn into the backroom. Getting changed in whatever casual clothing you had. Walking back out listening in on Cora telling Sam a joke.

" yall ready?" You chime in. Sam nods his head and pats Coras. Getting his things to leave too

"Kids not goin?" You begin to open the ships door

"No..she usually stays in the Ship. Shes got a couple more years before she gets to Swill whiskey in some backwater bar" he leans in a bit closer. You get to see just how blue his eyes really are..

A slight nod from you was all he needed. But right before The both of you got off the landing pad, he stops abruptly. You sense his movement and stop too.

"Uh...yeah?" You quietly say looking ahead for any potential reasons to stop

"There's uh something you should know upfront...im a Coe, as in Soloman Coe. First man on Akila. That story i told you about the artifact...its somewhat of a family legend" Sam goes on to explain the legend more relating it to the activity. Or lack of activity the Artifacts produce.

"Your family built Akila?" You give off slight enthusiasm

"Yeah and the Coes have been Coasting on that for 10 generations now"

Sam tells you the next location is at Galbank. And soon enough you two are walking through Akila city Gates

But a guard stops both of you. Informing a Robbery has been going on and you cant enter.

The Guard recognizes Sam and asks for his help. You quickly push pass the Guard

"Ill help"

Sam follows after a Smile appearing on his Face.

As you approach the crowd you see the Marshal. Hearing the intercom calling Him out and threatening the hostages.

You hear the Robbers say they wont give demands unless theres someone they could trust.

"Like who" the Marshall fold his arms

"Not you, not your rangers or the city guards" the rober replies.

You walk up to him. Still not used to this atmosphere.

Before you could say anything the Marshall tells you to stand back.

"Sir i could help-"

"I dont know you so please stand back"

Before tou could get frustrated Sam steps in

"Akila City at its finest i see. No dull moment"

The Marshall looks at him a surprised relieved expression appeared.

"Well ill be damned Sam Coe. Been a long time?"

They talk for a minute at most and with one demand Sam manages to convince the Marshall to let you help. The Marshall gives you the Run down and lets you go.

"Take it slow and steady take all the Steps to De-esculate the situation" you nod in agreement and walk to the door. The Marshal telling the robers that youre being sent in.

As you go up to the door and press the intercom you hear the rober. Sounding afraid and frantic. After a short time you managed to calm them down. After a few more minutes you managed to make them back down and let themselves be taken into custody. You get up to walk away. Your hand on your temple of your head.

The Marshall looking a bit afraid of your answer.

"How did it go?" He says stepping forward.

" well... now please go send your people in to arrest them" you take a long breath of air relaxing yourself.

"Youd make a decent ranger with the way you handled that" sam smiles sitting down near by

"Yeah that was...something" you sit down with him waiting to go inside.

"Sooo.... This your home?" You awkwardly reposition yourself

"Yeah good Ol' Akila city... I hope to avoid my home though" sam leans back getting more comportable.

You stare at him. Noting all his features to yourself. He wasn't a bad looking man. He was actually very handsome.

" do you always stair like that...or am i too charming?" Sam smiles Messing with his beard a bit while leaning forward to you.

You scrunch your nose a bit and turn to face the Bank

"Well look like its back to functioning...lets go!" You get up and start walking over. Sam laughing a bit to himself and following after.

Your trip to the bank ended as soon as you opened the locker. The map was gone and Sam knew exactly where it was

"Oh no Jacob of course that old mule saw us coming"

" sounds like we need to talk to him huh.."

"That We do... Was really hoping to avoid the estate though. Probably caught wind of it on our arrival once we landed. coras ganna be so mad. " he looks off disappointed

"Sam level with me here..whos Jacod"

"We really gatta do this?"

"We are going anyway I'm bound to find out"

"You're not wrong" Sam looks down. Thinking for a second.

"We cant work together if you don't trust me" You lean back on one of the lockers cocking your head to the side to try and see his face.

"I know- its just its Personal" he looks up finally.

You give him a sincere look.

"Fine hes my dad okay we arent exactly on friendly terms. He probably knew i was coming for the maps. Family business is just something i didnt want to get into ya know"

You can tell it took a lot out of him. Way more than he even knew.

"Thanks for opening up to me sam" You smile and push yourself off the locker.

"Yeah well sorry I'm such a pain about it. No forgiveness between me and my old man..its uh Coe tradition"

"all right...shall we" Sam turns to head out. You following after.

You both quietly walk through the Streets of Akila city. Going up some stairs as Sam tells you small stories of when he was a boy. Or stories of his fathers ways.

Saying what paths he took as a child to get home or hide out.

You just smile and nod. Not wanting to accidentally cut him off from his ramblings, you found it cute, wholesome that this ruggid space cowboy had such a love for old memories.

You two finally made it to the house.

Sam holds the door open for you. Whispering "the old Coe estate" as you walk in. Sam following after. He steps foward and to what you assume to be his Father. You stand back as they begind their long awaited conversation

"Well well... Sam Coe finally decides to darken our doorstep again." His dad crosses his arm

"You know why im here" sam says in a neutral tone.

"Oh? And Whats that? You come to your senses? Realize where you ought to be for once?" Jacob Coe steps forword

"I ain't askin again" sam keeping his composure.

"You aint ask once? Lets here it! i want you to say the words about whats most important to you than family!" Jacob begins to point at Sam angerly crossing his arms when hes done.

"Okay... this was a mistake" Sam is obviously done, annoyed already with his Father.

"The only Mistake im seeing here is you.. Bringing your Constellation lackey here..instead of my granddaughter" Jacob gets annoyed too. Looking and pointing at you

" come to help Sam loot his Ancestory? You're not getting those maps. Full Stop" he calls you out personally. Turning to face you and not sam

"-I got just as much right to those maps as anyone else in the Family" sam cuts in. Getting in between his Father and you. You step back to create more needed space from this family's drama.

"That's exactly right Sam.. we all share Solomons legacy. Only some of us are around to live up to it. And some of us arent"

"All right. Thats enough. Come on. Lets you and i talk, in private" sam looks at you. Raising his hand to show you a way

"-hmph. Welcome home sam. Make your visit short okay? Its what you do best" You could hear what Jacob said as he walked to another location of the house .

You look at sam, wondering what he needed.

"Give me a sec..." He takes a long deep breath

"All right lets talk options"

You think for a second. Shifting your weight to one leg and looking around

"I could always speak to Jacob? He might see reason?" You shrug your shoulders with the idea. Didnt seem like a bad one considering all.

"You're flying in the face of my Thirty plus Years of experience with the man. But all right. Hope you like arguing"

A smile on your face appears as you walk over to Jacob. Sam watches you from the Distance. Watching your interaction with his father made him feel away no other has. He wasnt worried, or annoyed. And somehow of all people someone finally got to his dad.

A smile krept up on his face as he watched you two talk, he hadnt realized he was staring at all. Until you started to walk over. He quickly turned around to look at a random photo and back up to you.

"How'd it go?"

"I got the map. Lets go get it!' You smile as you grab his arm and begin walking to a room Jacob had said it was in.

Before Sam could even respond the maps where in his hands

"I can't believe you convinced him. Good job Captain" he tiped his hat to you. You blush at the gesture and tip a fake hat to him

"You too Sam. We wouldn't be here without your connections ya know" you wink and read along side him.

"Alright lets see if we can find the empty nest" sam sits down on a chair.

"Alri let me think... The way i heard it. The readings he was getting were normal at first, then they bottomed out.' And no creature, alien or otherwise, would dare step inside' there found it... Oh boy... Thats a problem" he lets out another deep sigh

"Whatever it is we can handle it"

"Well, you aint wrong. But lets take a look at what we're up against" sam stands up with you.

"First its in The middle of the frontier. Which we already expected. No problems there but the usual tusslin with alien life. But the empty nest is in a cave right in the middle of Shaw Gang territory. Same outlaws who held up Galbank"

"Bring outlaws to justice sounds like fine work to me..no?"

"Well just remember its about the Artifact not them. Hurting bad guys puts a smile on your face, Thats A bonus lets get to that cave"

You both travel to the cave. Beating up bad guys when you need. Traveling down to the depths and arriving at the artifact.

"This place looks awesome" sam messes with some of the floating rocke around it.

You pull out your Cutter and cut into the rock exposing the artifacts surface. You reach your hand out to touch the thing. Your vision going into wonders as you feel your mind expand. Sam looks at the frozen you. Getting worried and rushing to your body. Eyes wide open looking up as your hand is stuck on the Artifact. Finally you wake up. Falling back into sams arms as he catches you and lays you down.

You shake your head a bit and look down at the artifact in your hand.

"Won't lie. My heart stopped for a beat when you passed out. Glad you're still with us" sam lifts you off the ground as you Steady your own feet.

"Haha..find anything interesting while i was gone?" You shake off the dirt on yourself

As you both were walking up you begin to wonder things.

"Mind if i ask you a personal question?" You climb the dusty stairs.

"There's so many planets, Moons, celestial phenomena out there...most captains just sail through the Great Black. Not really looking...appreciating. A lot of the time touching down on a virgin planet can be ...uneventful. But.... Every now and then you see something no human gas ever laid eyes on - that is what i live for"

" how interesting.. I like hearing your ways of thinking, you yourself are interesting sam." You turn back and shoot sam another Smile. Always showing him how happy you are to learn more about him.

"Tell me more about cora" you love hearing about him..for some reason this cowboy is so interesting to you.

As he talks to you about her schooling. How weirdly smart she is and how shes just getting started. He talks about his actions and what hes seen or done across the universe and finally what he plans to do with life. You loved every second of the conversation even telling him your plans and what you did before the job.

You get up to the surface and head into the ship. Cora greets you, Reading some of your books.

"Heading back to the lodge!" You get ready for takeoff.

Heading into the lodge you put the artifact down. Having a small conversation with everyone about the meaning and how amazing everything is.

"Well i think Cora and I need some downtime. But you let me know when you want to team up again" sam leans on the railing smiling up at you as you lean down too.

"Oh and since it tends to come up.. Me and my rugrat co-pilot work as a team. Thats non-negotiable. If im coming with. That means Coras on your ship"

"Oh? I was just planning on having Cora. I mean shes super helpful!" You bump your arm into Sams. He gives you a big laugh

"Actually...i wouldnt mind if we all kept traveling together..." You look down watching cora interact with the rest of the team.

"Huh..why not?"

"What do you think cora?" Sam yells a bit at cora

"Want to keep traveling with the Captain here"

" its really nice to have more company. New Stories, new data-" cora goes on but gets cut off

"What? Data? Haha, all right we're in. Lets see what the galaxy throws at us next" sam laughs more sitting up. You take a second to stand continuing to watch the people below. Sam takes this second to watch you. Noticing your build. Watching what exact pose you're in. He wouldn't deny you are attractive and the suit you always wore even inside and on habital planets didnt show you off.

As you begin to get up sam quickly turns away. You notice this

" uh...you okay?" You turn to him concerned and why he turned away so fast

"Yeeup all good" sam looks away sheepishly you not understanding that he was checking you out.

"Well i heard i had a room here...im so excited to get decorating. Make this place feel like home"

Sam nods wondering where you're going with this

"Do you have a room here?" You ask wondering what it might look like.

'I do.. Coras is in the basement. She says she likes to not hear what adults talk about.."

"Oh can i see? Id like to see how you decorate. Plus living life on a 2 person Ship isnt really ideal for most decor centered things. The lodge ia huge id like to buy some stuff too" you look around admiring the practical mansion you're in.

"Uh okay? Its this way" sam raises an eyebrow but still leads you the way to his room. You notice the posters and punching bag. Loving all the stuff hes gathered over his time.

"Is this an old baseball?" You ask sitting on his bed.

"Yeah, got it a while back from a trade was going to be Coras" Sam watches as you look around his Room. Awkwardly waiting for your next move, noting just how confident you are to just walk into a mans room.

"Youre something special arent you?" Sam chuckles a bit watching you lay back in his bed.

"Huh? Why do you say that?" You look up getting more comfortable in the bed.

"Well... First you're in my bed after wanting to look at my decor, thats something special" sam laughs again putting more things he found on the shelfs he has making sure hes turned away from you.

"Yeah well you look like an interesting person. Thought your room would be interesting too" you laugh a bit and sit up.

"Was i wrong?" You turn to look at Sam who now is looking at you.

" I guess not. Didnt think my room was so 'interesting' to you. I mean ive got no problem with you here im just a bit confused" Sam crosses his arms confused.

"I have my own room sure but. Honestly after being in here. This room is more comforting. Its so you? Its nice" you stand up shooting the cowboy a smile.

"You've got good taste cowboy" you start to walk out of the room. Sam watches you

"Ive never even seen a Cow and im not a boy..." Sam chuckles to himself before following you of of his room and into the direction of your room.

" you may not have seen the Cow but you definitely have the qualities..." You turn around to flick his hat and you give him a small wink and smile.

Sam is smiles rolling his eyes as a joke.

"Captain are you flirting with me?" Sam laughs a bit walking past you.

" no" you speed up, passing Sam up

"Unless you wanted me to?" With that you bolt down the hall way running into your room.

Sam smiles laughing to himself, tipping his hat down.

"What a weird woman" he walks to follow after you.

Things Final Fantasy III does not tell you about Final Fantasy III.

When it comes to RPGs, information that the player has is far from a guarantee. Some games will tell players practically everything about their systems and leave it to the player to use that information. Others will leave some mechanics in the background, quietly applying them without the player's knowledge. The Final Fantasy III remake falls into the latter category, as there are some mechanics that the player may not realize even exist unless they look outside of the game. Here are seven of them.

This is based on the Future Press Official Strategy Guide. As far as SGs go, it seems pretty close to the Japanese SE guide (baring at least one case).

Party Member Levels (Life of the Party)

While temporary party aren't directly controllable, they seem to have their own levels and stats. Interestingly the Future Press strategy guide states that they also have stats. Though I should clarify: At this time, I have yet to find these in the Japanese strategy guide, so I am not entirely sure that these are accurate. However, the FP guide in general is close to the Japanese guide in terms of technical information, so I am willing to accept that risk.

These are:

Sara: Lv 5 (Str/Vit/Agi/Min: 6, Int: 7)

Cid: Lv 3 (Str/Agi: 5, Vit/Int/Min: 8)

Desch: Lv 10 (Str: 15, Vit: 10, Agi: 14, Int: 7, Min: 6

Aria: Lv 25 (All: 25)

Alus: Lv 30 (All: 35)

Doga/Unei: Lv 50 (All: 45)

Some observations:

The guide notes that the characters stats are usually significantly higher than the main characters' at the same levels. This is especially noticeable with Alus (The party's base stats, by compare, will be: Str/Agi: 24, Vit/Min/Int: 20)

Cid is the only party member to be weaker than the character before him (Sara), presumably due to how little time the party spends with him. He does have an impressively strong hammer, though.

Despite being portrayed as a White Mage, Sara's Int (7) is slightly higher than her Min (6).

It seems that after Desch, the devs kinda gave up with making varied stats, so Aria, Alus, Doga and Unei have the same number for all their stats.

Coincidence or otherwise, Aria's stat number also matches her level.

Doga and Unei share the same levels and stats as each other, a distinction no other party member has. For extra fun, Xande is also level 50, although his actual stats are unfortunately but understandably different.

Alus, a 10 year old boy is somehow twice as strong as Desch, a grown man.

Mognet Details (Stampin' N Stompin')

Most of Mognet's discussion usually begins and ends with it being connected to the sidequests. Because of this, there are a few features of Mognet that go undernoticed.

One particular aspect is the cards: For meeting the Legendary Smith with a mastered job and defeating the Iron Giant, the party can get cards signifying their mastery.

(I have yet to defeat the Iron Giant. I apologize for being a fraud).

In the PSP and Steam versions, these cards are mostly just rewards. In the DS version, however, they can be used as stamps for Mognet. And while the Iron Giant is purely to flaunt your superiority over the beast, the job mastery cards actually allow players to help out other players: If a player holding a signed letter runs into the Legendary Smith, she will give the player the respective job mastery item without having a level 99 job. While it doesn't break the game, due to how late it is before you can encounter the Smith, it does cut down on the grind you'd need if you wanted those items.

Encounter Frequency (Fights in the A.M. P.M. F.M.)

In Octopath Traveler, a later game by Team Asano, entering a new location will usually show you a danger level, giving you a general idea of how strong the enemies in that area are. While the mechanic is visible in OT, it was actually deployed discreetly in Final Fantasy III: Each area has a level that the guides recommend the player be at. However, the game itself uses a more subtle method: If your party is below the recommended level, the encounter rate will be higher than usual. By contrast, the further above the recommended level that the party is (up to six levels), the lower the encounter rate will be.

For example: The Nepto Shrine has a Danger Level of 10. If the party made it to the Shrine at level 7, then they will likely encounter more enemies than they would at level 10. By contrast, at level 16, they will have a chance at encountering the least amount of enemies.

Attack Types (SMASH! SLASH! STAB!)

In Final Fantasy III, elemental weaknesses are clear and easily implied by the fact that Mages have themed spells. However, the game also has a second, subtle weakness system: Attack Types, the physical counterpart.

The four attack types are

Unhanded: Despite the name, Claws are also included

Blow: Weapons that focus on slamming or bludgeoning the foe

Cut: Weapons that actually cut the foe, like Swords

Stab: Weapons that stab or have a stab-like effect, like Arrows

Interestingly, some weapons aren't mutually exclusive: Axes count for both blows and cuts, Knives count for both stabs and cuts and Unarmed counts for both Unhanded and Blow.

Hands (The Hands of Fate)

The Hand stat is a secret stat that the game silently keeps track of for each character. The hand stat represents how many times a physical attack has been made with a particular hand, the hand getting 3 XP for each use. Much like job levels only one hand level can be gained per battle, regardless of how many points are racked up. Theoretically, if you can have hands of different levels, although given how much III encourages dual-wielding, it's unlikely.

The FP guide recommends using the Ranger's barrage if you want to build up the hand stat, as that is a multi-hit attack that nonetheless counts each hit for the hand.

Weight (The Weight of the World)

Weight is not a new mechanic to Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy V, in particular has the stat help to determine who quickly a character acts (i.e. how fast the ATB bar fills up). However, V is the rare game where the game will actively inform the player of its existence. Other games in the series have it, including III (at least, in the remake).

Weight, along with Agility, determines how soon a character will act during the turn, as well as how many hits a character does (alongside the aforementioned Hand stat). This is why a Warrior with an axe will generally hit less than a Warrior with a sword, despite having higher attack. Interestingly magic also has weight to it with spells having a specific weight/cast time to it.

Boss Scripts (Script Write)

Bosses changing strategy mid-fight has been a Final Fantasy staple since at least Final Fantasy IV (Zeromus, for example, only starts to spam Meteo when he's close to dying), so the FF3 remake isn't particularly new or original for using this. Still, it's something to be aware of in case you make a particular fight harder than it needs to be.

A likely candidate for this is actually the final boss: While the Cloud of Darkness uses Particle Beam (and spams it during the last phase), it actually doesn't use the move until it's down to 80% of its HP, using the less threatening standard attack instead. This means that a player willing to take some turns to lower the danger can focus on the tentacles, which are the more immediate threat.

You may recognize Mariana if you’re a fan of reality dating shows. She was only 25 when her casting video for a reality dating show similar to Are You the One was chosen out of the thousands the network received. She never admitted it while she was on tv, but it was more of an escape for her than anything else. It was the only escape out of the situation she was in that she could think of.

Mari was only 7 years old when she moved to Aurora Bay, California with her mom from Ecuador. Her mother had told her that her dad would follow behind – only to be told that he was caught at the border and sent back home before he could reach them. This broke her heart as the two were close and it broke every day that passed once communication had ceased between the two. It was hard on her because she found it difficult adapting to new town and language. Not only did she have to teach herself English, but she had to teach her mother too. She did not start speaking full English until she was 10 years old.

When she turned 16, her mother introduced her to Augosto Valverde, a boy that was a year older than her. Mari didn’t think much of it as her mom had been a friend to his family through the years that they lived in Aurora Bay. The two got along extremely well and somewhere along the way they started to date. All during this, her mother convinced her that he would be the one she’d marry when they were both done with college.

By the time Mari had graduated college at 23 – she had fallen in love and it was not with Augosto. It didn’t help that he went to London for college, and she went up to San Francisco. She felt it become less serious for them both as there wasn’t constant communication. This man she fell in love with worshipped her and vice versa. The two were inseparable from the moment they met as sophomores in college up until they graduated. It was safe to say that Mari was not thinking about marrying Augosto.

She had gotten back to Aurora Bay when her mom sprung the news that Augosto would be back in town too and had already asked for approval to marry her. She was shocked. Again, she hadn’t thought about that conversation she had with her mom when she was a teenager. Augosto made it back and he caught Mari with the man she was in love with. She tried to explain that she didn’t know that they were going to get married and that the two hadn’t been serious in so long, why would she even think marriage was still on the books? Augosto was mad, revengeful even, so he revealed to Mari that their engagement had been arranged since they were kids. Her mother had made a deal, ‘sold’ her to say, to Augosto’s family in exchange for money.

When Mari confronted her mom – she confirmed everything. She did indeed “sell” her daughter to the Valverdes because they needed to pay off her moms debts. They were the reason they moved to Aurora Bay. It was the reason why she never saw her father again. Since the engagement was no more, the Valverdes turned their backs on them. Her mom was furious. So much so, that her mom tried to find another rich family to get her married into even if she had to force her daughter down the aisle. Mari was terrified. She felt that she had grown up with a stranger. She couldn’t believe that her mom wanted money so much that she could give her own daughter away.

Her mom did not stop. It was two years that she had to deal with mom showing up to her house or calling her phone about a new potential match. It had become all too overwhelming. Mari had distanced herself from the man she loved and the two broke up a few months before she turned 25. It was amicable and she wished him nothing but the best. After the breakup, she could feel herself falling into a depression, and she needed to avoid that. Most of all, she needed to get away from her mom.

So, she did what she thought was best, and didn’t think it would happen in a million years… She applied to be on are you the one and was accepted. She went on and she flourished. She was known to be the one who spoke her mind and stood up for herself. She was called every name in the book by castmates and viewers yet somehow came out being loved by a lot of people. She did leave the show with a partner in hand – however it didn’t last long because of the distance.

Once she settled back in Aurora Bay, she got a call from her father who had learned that she was on reality TV, tracked her down and found her. He let her know that all contact was cut off and that her mother never told him that they were leaving. They were just gone one day. The two reunited in Aurora Bay and he was able to stop her mom from trying to get her to marry some random man. This left Mariana happy and free as she finally had the courage to cut her mom off.

It wasn’t long until Mariana found herself on another reality dating show. This time, she was on a show similar to Love Island at 27, and she enjoyed herself, but she got screwed over and sent home by the 6th week. This appearance made her even more popular and she was able to get into modeling, and would be asked to help at events through interviewing others such as music festivals, the MTV movie awards, and things like that. She’s had a couple of public flings and not so public flings, but has not had the urge to be tied down yet.

She loves her life and what she does. She feels closer to herself, but now she’s facing the trauma that her mother had given her. It hasn’t been easy, but she’s trying. It was something she was able to avoid by going on reality tv instead of dealing with head on. She's living her life day by day, mommy issues at a high, while learning to be okay with who she has become and what she's been through.

Hi! Can we get some headcanons or theories on Old Hunter Vitus?

HEY who is pulling that prank where people act like they want to hear my thoughts all day again?! xd /j

🧭 Okay, first things first - he was one of the less strong Old Hunters, that I am basing on the fact that his right-hand weapon requires Strength first of all but this is his lower stat (along with Arcane). He also has average build of the body; sliders are all on 128- I mean, Henryk whom I often see perceived as smaller has larger body according to sliders! Also both of his weapons are upgraded to full +10. Basically, he had to rely on agility, skill and upgrading weapons with Old Hunters' gimmics (with blood gems).

🧭 He is also a bit stuck-up and would not trade his weapon for anything else even after better ones were invented, despite Beast Cutter being far from perfect, especially for him. He is the type to latch onto the first thing he obtains until its end that can't and won't experiment.

🧭 It was @val-of-the-north's idea that the Chalice Dungeons go under ocean's level at some point, that might be further supported by the skeleton of a whale you see in Fishing Hamlet found in the dungeons too, and them being wet in general. We headcanon that Vitus is one of the 'still alive' cooperators, and he ventured down in the dungeons to try and find the exit in the 'real' world approximately in New Loran (or at least 'real' Yharnam) despite the long way. He's been looking for the exit for many years and has the most elaborate (and even semi-useful!) maps of the dungeons. Honestly, absolutely insane idea, but at the same time it might work. Eventually.

🧭 Him being slightly rigid and non-adaptive to new ideas played a very good role in keeping him sane and focused despite spending years in the dungeons. In communications and relationships with other people, though, he is like that one grumpy grandpa who thinks only his generation knew shit and younger people are too spoiled, though would offer advice and listening ear in good faith. Think of Narrow-minded Man but quite skilled and educated, and not shaming any category of people in particular.

🧭 He has Fire Paper, so I presume he has been there when Old Yharnam was burnt:

🧭 So, he left on his journey under assumption that Healing Church had it together and didn't need Old Hunters' help anymore- heck, he thought burning Old Yharnam was able to seriously hinder the beasthood spreading! But more importantly, he felt severely demotivated to stay after Gehrman's disappearance. He knows he is a dunce and needs an authority figure, that he simply didn't acknowledge in Ludwig. Like I said, he hardly can adapt to a change. Just eternally cursed with the duckling effect.

🧭 For this reason, he had many good, decades-long friends in his life that he still feels are bond to him despite their departure (or even death), but never was able to find a couple. He'd not venture unless he could find absolute commitment, but he was getting all too serious about living whole life and working together too soon, that'd push women he met away - sometimes it felt like 'rushing it', other times he just felt like the most boring guy ever. He just lacks this 'romantic' and emotional aspect, and quite basically just looking for a companion.

🧭 He knows a lot of stories, both his own and ones his friends told him, and could tell them in precise detail, down to year, month, day and hour like it happened today. Really good person to sit at the fire with.

🧭 Earlier, he used to run into other roaming hunters or Tomb Prospectors though, and would give them really cool items he found in the dungeons, to deliver to the surface. Currently, in his loneliness, he even learned to speak with Loran Clerics that would have the braincell to not attack him. From the audio files @val-of-the-north sent to me, Pthumerians have an unusual "language".. and I swear, Vitus is dangerously close to be able to teach it :') He tried to write a book of sorts on it, but it was unfinished and abandoned in one of his nooks. He doesn't stay in the same place for too long, and he tries to not carry too much unnecessary stuff with him.

🧭 In Loran Dungeons, there are a few followers of Irreverent Izzy that seek "enlightenment" she (or he, either works) found there once, by trying to communicate with its ancient beasts. Like Josef! They wear Charred Hunter set not because they once were those hunters, but because Charred Hunters were once chasing them with murderous intent, then killed and robbed of clothes for its incredible protection against the fire. They know to be scared of Vitus, since he doesn't spare them. He doesn't aspire to kill them, but will attack on the spot, it is 'you can live if you can run fast enough' attitude.

🧭 He read every book in the Old Hunters' workshop. That was his normal hobby outside of the hunt. By the time of the game's events, he'd need reading glasses though, since old age and spending too much time in hardly-lit areas reduced his eyesight a lot. The adventurous stories going into further detail about tech or nature or history were his favourite! I think his favourite author would be Jules Verne.

🧭 He was one of the people telling Maria to 'just drop the pretend and be herself' when she joined the Old Hunters, presuming that there was no way an aristocratic, noble woman from Cainhurst would willingly look modest and even masculine like other Old Hunters. He believed the nobles to be "all the same", but kind of overcame his doubts about her after the day of seeing her all bloodied and dirty, dragging Gehrman that just lost his leg all by herself and showing quite the leader skills growling at the others to get their shit together. It is just one of the examples of where he'd only drop a stereotype when something jaw-dropping happens. It is also one of the examples where he obtains a respect to a person that doesn't fade through years; if you show yourself to be very worthy and strong to him once, this effect will linger probably forever, even if you fall from grace afterwards.

🧭 Yeahhhhh I know I am making the 'quite rigid mind and if he remembers something fondly it is forever and also eager to learn' his whole personality, but I think he is understandable by now! I do not have much complexity for him, he is just another old man! ...well, he was middle-aged man in Old Hunters' prime, but you get my point!

The only child born to a young couple, Marcus had a fairly normal childhood, with nothing extraordinary standing out to him. Although his house was never full of siblings to keep him company, he never felt lonely as he was always striking up conversations with other kids and making friends fast.

Always running around with his friends or spending time with his grandparents whenever they visited or when he visited and stayed with them in the summer, he was hardly ever present for the arguments his parents would get into, leading him to think things were fine between them.

It was a bit of a shock then when the pair decided to divorce when he was around seventeen. Everything moved pretty fast and before he knew it, he was living with his mom on the other side of the country where his grandparents lived. Still confused about the whole thing, he spent more time with his grandparents, particularly his grandma who he had always enjoyed baking with.

Marcus attempted to go to a local community college following graduating from high school, but ended up dropping out after two semesters. School had never been something excelled in or something that brought him much joy. He worked some odd jobs following dropping out until he landed a job at Bake My Day.

Some time after settling into a job he loved and getting a place of his own, he met his now ex-fiancee and quickly fell head over heels. After being together for a while, the two became engaged and he was ecstatic. Unfortunately, everything ended with him being left at the alter.

These days he's still working a job he loves and is just trying to figure out the rest of his life.

Great baker, horrible chef. One of life's greatest mysteries will forever be how this man is great at the one that requires more precision and horrible at the one where you can wing it a bit more.

Speaking of, apologies to fellow Parkdale residents, the fire department has been called out a couple times while he's cooking. But he makes up with it by giving the people on his floor free sweets when he bakes so...ya win some and ya lose some.

Head empty, no thoughts but he means well so it makes up for it - most of the time. Occasionally it leads to unexpected shenanigans.

Genuinely believes there's good to be found in everyone and is the type of person to give out waaaay too many chances. In general has a positive outlook no matter what happens and tries to bounce back quick after disappointments even if it means not fully dealing with the issue.

Super affectionate, the type of person to platonically cuddle and hold hands + just randomly let his friends know they mean the world to him. Generally it's a great thing, but paired with his obliviousness, it occasionally makes certain relationships confusing.

Voice of Reason: Since Marcus isn't really one to think anything through, he definitely could use a friend to be his voice of reason. Chaotic Duo: The exact opposite vibes as the voice of reason. Whenever the pair hangout they seem to share one braincell and exclusively make poor decisions but at least they're having fun, right??

Rebounds: Marcus still isn't 100% sure what he wants romantically moving forward so there may have been a couple confusing/messy dates or one night stands following the ending of his very serious long-term relationship.

Neighbors: He lives in the Parkdale Apartments and I just think this could be a fun connection because he's sort of unintentionally a menace of a neighbor to have. Like is he going to get the fire department called out there again, drop off a sweet treat to his neighbors, or blast Linger by The Cranberries late at night.

Ex Fiancée: She got cold feet and stood him up at the altar, ending their 4 year relationship. He'd be lying if he said he didn't still have big confusing feelings about her and the entire situation.

Netflix cancelling a BUNCH of their shows featuring diverse casts and WLW characters reminded me of a rant I had earlier in the year on Twitter with regards to The Old Guard but didn't share here. So, here it is.

I've seen tweet after tweet on yonder Twitter from people who were unaware that there's going to be a sequel to The Old Guard so if you'll indulge me, I'm about to don a tin-foil hat and speculate wildly as to why it's slipping in under the radar and what might be the reasons for that.

Within the first week if The Old Guard being released in July 2020, it was already in the top 10 most streamed movies on the platform at reached around 72 million households in a month. Incredible viewing figures. It was well-reviewed by critics and a runaway smash hit with viewers - "certified fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes - and gained an active, passionate fanbase online the instant it was released (hello, welcome to Tumblr) due in part to the fresh take the movie had on the dull, formulaic action-movie genre.

Netflix had momentum. They had the stats to work with and a fanbase to back them up. They could have announced their intention to make a sequel back when interest was fresh (as they did with the likes of The Gray Man) and gotten everyone excited while it was being talked about. Because it was being talked about. A sequel was in the works fairly early on with the cast and crew pretty much confirming as much on social media. But in this fast-paced, binge-consume world, Netflix seemed to wait until all the hype had died down before making it official.

WHY? Why take a big-hitting, genre-bending, record-smashing movie that you KNEW had proven to be a success and KNEW had a follow-up in the pipeline and let it die? A hugely sceptical part of me has a theory that it was down to just how genre-bending it was.

From my experience online, the vast majority of those who enjoyed it reflect the characters of the movie and the team behind it - diverse, LGBTQ+ individuals who rarely see themselves on screen without it feeling like a kind of tokenism. The movie was directed by the amazing Gina Prince-Bythewood - a black woman. The cast was lead by two strong females who were neither sexualised or portrayed as damsels in distress. Two of the men were unashamedly in love with each other. All of the main male cast were allowed to be emotional and even cry. In the action genre, these things are all but unheard of. Male characters are rarely given emotional complexity beyond revenge and women are usually relegated to the role of side-kick, love interest or doe-eyed ingenue learning from the "best".

Because the genre tends to lean towards a stereotypical male audience.

A part of me wonders whether that's why Netflix didn't give it much promo and kudos and have let the pot come off the boil in terms of hyping The Old Guard's return. The service has a history of platforming voices that are anti-LGBTQ and cutting diversity within its ranks. And now they're at it again, axing a slew of shows after only one or two seasons that all seem to feature wlw relationships fairly prominently.

If you're not a straight, cis, white male then they're not interested in catering for you. If you're a minority, too bad. The fact that The Old Guard was a hit with the very communities they seem to be actively oppressing is a hurt that Netflix seemingly refuses to live with.

I'm just sick of "was the movie/show popular among straight white men?" being the metric against which a piece of media's success is measured. As if that demographic is the Holy Grail and if your fans aren't 28 year-old cis dudes, you've somehow failed.

I thank Netflix for bringing some truly great stories to life but at this point, I cannot trust them to keep them safe any more.

angie was a happy kid with a mostly happy childhood, growing up with her mother (father rarely, if ever around), her siblings and a little black cat. her mother was her everything, never letting baby angie and her siblings feel like they were missing anything growing up. she was a curious kid, getting to camp, fishing, exploring and learning about the world.

after graduating highschool, angie (19) was going through a bit of a tumultuous relationship. she didn’t go to college, instead idolizing a stay-at-home mother position, willing to forgive nearly anything from her partner, if it would allow her to have children and give them her everything like her own mother had done. unfortunately (or fortunately, depending who you ask), they were unable to conceive. around that time, her partner had decided to be unfaithful and actually fathered a child with his affair partner. this hurt angie to her core, almost more than the cheating itself.

the baby’s name was kiara, and as much as the precursor to her existence was shocking, angie actually became very close with her partner’s child and it’s mother. after about 3 years, angie decided she couldn’t stay with an unforgiving, untrustworthy man and left, keeping in contact with lea (the unknowing other women) and kiara who had also separated themselves from angie’s ex.

she moved to denver when she was twenty seven, feeling like corpis christi had given her all it could. her family had dispersed over the years and with her ending her 10+ year relationship, she needed a fresh start.

It's been a KILLER year so far. I've give out more 9/10 than in a LONG time. But by laws of stats hat makes sense, with so much MORE BL out this year than ever before, there’s more good ones. (More bad ones too.)

Semantic Error

My top BL of 2022 (probubly, I don’t see how it could get unseated - Japan is like: hold my sake).

Korea hit it entirely out of the Parks with Semantic Error by doing a university set BL featuring everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. It has Korea's signature quality executed perfectly, and added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Full review.

All the rest are 9/10. So remember I judge BL more on rewatchability than most and ALSO how much it is BL. So while I adore, for example, OFC because it’s so wonderfully mature and complex, it doesn’t sink into true BL in the way I expect OF THE GENRE. As a show show, it rates higher for me than as BL. Hope that makes sense. Full review.

Old Fashion Cupcake

This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits for episode one. It’s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said man with pancakes. It’s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. It’s coming of age/queerness packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity and love and loneliness... and it’s beautiful. Full review.

Cherry Blossoms After Winter

Korea took on early Japanese sweet yaoi but gave it their signature softness and precise production style with a STUNNING color palette (beautiful pastels, sun-saturated over-exposure), manga framing style, some traditional BL character archetypes, that tiny edge of bullying roughness and out-of-control seme, plus FINALLY a palatable take on the stepbrothers trope and it was, in a word, classic. Sophisticated and understated CBAW is not slow, it’s just subtle. It's dream-like and atmospheric, as if the whole thing took place under cold water on a warm spring day. Is there plot or peril? Not really. Do we care? Also, not really. Look, I can’t help it, I’m old school and so is this show. I grew up reading sweet yaoi, and this was THAT YAOI just on my screen. There’s no objectivity with me and CBAW. It’s a beautiful pastiche and I loved it for how it made me feel and what it reminded me of. It’s not flawless, but it is a wonderful experience. Blueming

It’s a tiny bit dark and a tiny bit bittersweet, almost too honest to a university experience and first love for BL. I wasn’t into it at first, but the leads are solid and by ep 5 it got really good, becoming a narrative about self discovery meets understanding and accepting others people’s flaws without hurting them. Ultimately we witnessed two characters maturing because of each other and their mutual affection, without that affection becoming the conflict point. Instead, tension was built around other aspects of identity, popularity, and self-worth. While production values were a touch lower than usual for Korea, Blueming included decent kisses and other forms of intimacy and a satisfying ending plus there’s judicious and very elegant use of tropes, (which is expected for Korea). (OffGun) Thai GMMTV YouTube

GMMTV gave us a dark disestablishment narrative (in a time of civil unrest) with established queer award-winning director Anucha and starring the biggest guns of BL OffGun. THIS IS AN AMAZING THING to get to experience in the BL world - nerve racking but remarkable. But was it ACTUALLY BL? It certainly a lot of BL elements, but in the end that’s not what the show was about, or even what it was genuinely trying to be as a performance piece. Still an amazing moment in Thai cinema, certainly worth your time. Don’t worry, it all ends happily. Full review.

Thai BL grew up with this pulp - a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine AKA a cinnamon roll couple. Mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. This was GMMTV’s flagship BL and it started 2022 on a BANG (okay no actual banging but you know what I mean), starring heavy hitters Ohm & Nanon in a pitch perfect university Romeo & Romeo masterpiece that will give you domesticity meets pain whiplash throughout and jet lag at the end. Some of the friendship and family dynamics are overworked, but it has great production values, killer acting, and some conscious effort to correct for half a decade of Thai BL’s anti-queer mistakes.
