"Lady Kaya, I have your tea ready" you say softly, setting down the delicate cup of warm milk tea with honey. She stared at it silently, her eyes still red from crying. It had been only a week since the passing of the Lord and Lady of the house- She was all you had left of them.. You had been their friend for years, your home having been raided by pirates in your youth leaving you penniless. It was those two who had taken you in, giving you a Job as the Nanny and Wetnurse of their only daughter Kaya. Who you saw as a daughter of your own.

"I miss them Nanny..." Her little voice trembled, Your own eyes filling with tears at hearing this. Kissing the top of her head.

"I miss them too Kaya..." You hugged her and felt her start crying in your arms. A loud knock on the door snapped both of you from your grief. Getting up you take Kaya with you tk the front door, Opening it cautiously as you spot the sheed headed man.

"Oh, Mister Merry. Please come inside" You say calmly opening the door fully for him.

Merry smiled proudly at you and Kaya, Stepping to the side as you took his wet coat to hang up.

"Ah! Miss (Y/N), I am happy to see you are still here" You nod gently at him as you return to Kaya side.

"Of course Sir Merry, I will never leave Kaya" you say softly, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.

"You have always been great with Kaya Miss (Y/N) But I worry for you managing such a large estate on your own. So I while out I met a Perfect Butler for the Home along with a maid and Chef he had with him!" Merry exclaimed proudly. Kaya looking up at you in question of this, you however feeling something odd about the convince of such a thing.

There a Man stepped inside, his black suit dampened with the rain as he adjusted his Glasses. He was tall, thin and imposing- Something not sitting right with you at seeing him.

"Good evening My Lady, I am Klahadore. I am humbly at your service" He bowed deeply, Kaya giving a kind smile at this as well.

"It's lovely to meet you Mr. Klahadore, I am Kaya" you heard your ward say sweetly. Also too kind to others who were ment to service her.

"Now Miss (Y/N) the house will be handed over to Klahadore for now, so that you may focus on Miss Kaya and her well being" Merry said cheerfully, Clearly proud of himself.

"...I see-" You whisper softly, while something in your gut told you there was something wrong with this man you gave a polite curtsey.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Klahadore. I place the home in your care as its Head Butler" You said calmly, But those words felt like a death sentence for you.

You felt his eyes watching your every move, it was like a cat watching a unexpecting Mouse.

"Now, Let us have a dinner to celebrate" Merry said cheerfully, Klahadore nodding to the larger man to his left who bowed.

"The kitchen is down the hall to the left Sir" You say calmly, the Chef giving you a curt smile and following the directions you offered.

"Yes.. let us" You say. Taking Kaya with you to change for dinner and get away from the new Butler's gaze.

At dinner you sat next to Kaya, talking and enjoying each others company as Merry joined along. Till Klahadore and the Maid came forth setting the table and the dishes for the evening.

"What is this?" You questioned, raising a brow at the plate presented by Klahadore.

"It is a braised giant shrimp in cream blue sauce" Klahadore said calmly, something didn't sit right about the dish. So you smiled at Kaya.

"Kaya, I'd like to taste the dish to know it is to your liking" You tell her, which she agrees.

"I do not think thay is necessary Miss (Y/N)" Klahadore starts but you give him a polite smile.

"Of course it is. You are still new" You point out making him narrow his eyes at you. Tasting the broth you furrow your brows, it tasted... odd. It wasn't bad per say but odd non the less.

"It should be fine..." You say softly, making Merry laugh heartily as his own plate was set down.

"Miss (Y/N) has always been so protective of Lady Kaya. But it's fine I swear Miss (Y/N) Miss Kaya is in good hands" You nod and continue on with the meal- You starting to feel a bit fatigued and tired. However after dinner you did your normal duties of bathing Kaya and getting her to bed.

That night you couldn't rest well, the dish and its odd smell making you feel unwell. You had tasted it and while you didn't care for it personally it just made you feel- Off. Getting up from your bed you decide a glass of water is needed, Grabbing a candle you start to head down to the kitchens.

Barefoot and silent as you try not to make any noise, still in your own thoughts about that evening.

Walking down to the kitchen area you hear whispering, Crouching down slowly so you not cast a shadow toj blow out your candle and listen.

"That damn Nanny is going to cause us more trouble! She has to go-" You hear Bachi hiss clearly angry with your presence.

"Yeah- She actually tasted that damn poison. If she starts to fall ill like Kaya then our whole plan will be busted- That and she's already suspicious of Captian Kuro" you felt your heart drop to your stomach. Captian Kuro? Of the Black Cat Pirates!? You start to shake and slowly crawl backwards from your crouched position, trying to create distance from the kitchen. You had to alert the village of this and sneak Kaya out!

"Well well well, I see a mouse has found its way to the kitchens-" You hear a deep voice rumble behind you. Before you can even begin to react you felt a hand grab your hair and yanked you to your feet, the wind being knocked from your lungs as you were slammed hard against the near by wall.

He had his arm raised and Blades ready to puncture your throat at a given moment. You stare at him, your eyes wide as fresh tears filled your gaze. Those sharp blades touching delicately on your throat, his gaze locked onto you.

You heard the shuffling of the other two rushing to see what the noise is and finding Kuro holding you against the wall.

"Sir did she-" Buchi started but got a glare from the Captian.

"Of course you fool- This is why I told you to not speak about this until we got her out!-" He growled making both Bachi and Sham flinch. His gaze turning back to you once more, those cold blades tapping the collar of your nightslip taking in disappointment.

"Such a shame... I do find you quite attractive-"

He hummed, In a flick of his wrist his blades Slicing through the front of your slip. You flinched as your bare chest hit the cold night air, Tears running down your cheeks as you sob. Sham looking away from you even at this-

"Such a shame indeed..." He hummed, tapping the tip of his blade against the dip between your breast causing light scratches to appear with small droplets of blood. Kuro was surprised by how much this aroused him, was it the tears running down your face? How your breast moved with every sob thay managed to squeeze from you? Or your nipples responding to the cold air- Whatever it was it sure was affective.

"I hate to be wasteful at times.. so your services will be changing- You will no longer be Serving Ms. Kaya, But me instead" He smirked at this, pride bubbling in his chest as he saw your face shift to shock and fear. "Besides- I'll need some for of stress relief if I'm going to be playing out this Con-" He smirked, pulling his blades away from your chest.

"Buchi- Grab her and take her to my quarters. Make sure not a peep leaves her and tie her wrist to the bedframe. Id hate for her to escape" He orders as the Chef quickly snatches you and shoves a cloth in your mouth, muffling your screams as you were hauled away. Kuro standing there with a grin as he adjusted his Glasses once more and hid his blades. It seems things would be more fun then he thought.

okay so i saw that post that said "to be loved is to be changed, but in a horrific and unasked for transformation" and this is so snotacon both sides to me.

I mean, think about it. Otacon can't *kill* someone when Snake meets him, and that's true in two ways. Yeah, physically he's a spindly litte nerd who literally couldn't hurt someone if his life depended on it, but he couldn't do it mentally either. He designs weapons. That's a far cry from actually *using* them. He's a pencil pusher who wanted to build giant robots and was willing to believe that MG Rex wouldn't actually be used.

How long do you think *that* lasted, living, working with a mercenary? At what point do you think it sunk in that if he wanted to actually achieve anything with Philanthropy he was going to have to be okay with lethal force being involved?

Surely we don't think everything was non-lethal up to the tanker? I mean, he has to explain the tranqs work at the beginning of the mission, so it's probably new to him, right? So what were they doing before that? And they don't ask themselves if they should pull out when it becomes apparent that lethal force may be necessary, so clearly these won't be the start of Philanthropy's body count.

So when was the point that he resigned himself to the fact that he was going to have to be a lot closer to death and direct killing than he ever had been before? Did Snake insist on having final judgment off the bat? Did Otacon try to convince him that they needed to do it non-lethally, did they run a mission, maybe even a few come off clean, only for something to go terribly wrong? Did they get out by the skin of their teeth? Did Snake have to kill someone, and Otacon get upset by this first death? And did they have an argument where Snake points out that he is the one that has to pay the price for Otacon's personal mission against killing?

But that's all so obvious. Killing is bad, etc.

What about Snake?

I think the idea of caring for anyone is scary to him. Especially the extent to which he cares about Otacon.

I mean, half of his utility is in the fact that he just doesn't give a shit about himself, and has nobody left that gives a shit about him. He doesn't have anything to hold him back from giving 110% to the mission. If he dies, he dies. What does he care? He's a washed up alcoholic with PTSD previously known only to shrimps.

And he clearly values his utility. Even in 4, it's how he refers to himself. "An old killer." What use is he if he's concerned about whether he'll make it home in one piece.

When do you think that sinks in to him? Do you think was the first time Otacon told him to drop the mission and get back safe when things took a turn? Do you think he'd ever been in a situation where someone cared more about his life than whatever they were sending him to do? Do you think Kaz even pretended to genuinely care about his safety in the field? Forget Campbell, that's right out, he couldn't even let Snake be as he's fucking dying. Do you think he tried to finish it out first, only for Otacon to beg and scream at him that he was serious?

Or do you think it was when he got hurt, badly hurt, and he sees Otacon sitting over him at night, making sure he's okay, changing his bandages, and out of the corner of his eye he sees a hand wipe away tears, or hears a quiet sniffle, because Otacon realized how close he was to losing Snake.

Or maybe comms get cut unexpectedly during a shootout, and he gets sidetracked, held up somewhere, makes it back to the rendezvous point just under the wire, and Otacon is bawling because he really thought he lost Snake for good this time.

Do you think Snake realizes that at first? Do you think he's too obtuse to realize the tears are over him? Are from fear for him?

At what point do you think he realizes that the numbness he's fostered, that's been intentionally fostered in him (remember, he's the "Cipher-backed son", he's been moved from foster family to foster family more times than he can count, made intentionally to feel disposable, for the sake of creating a perfect soldier) has been replaced with this new pain, this fear, not even for himself, but for Otacon, for the gaping hole he realizes he'll leave in Otacon's life if something's to happen?

At what point do you think Snake realized that he'd turned a regular civilian into a mercenary, in mind if not body?

At what point do you think Otacon realized he'd fundamentally taken a US military asset and broken it over his knee?

A Rebel In My Soul | Chapter 4: Three Minutes

Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Fem!Mitchell!Reader

Warnings: swearing, brief mentions of death, someone's being an asshole, fluff, angst, enemies to lovers, slow burn. HANGMAN'S POV (again)

Summary: Y/N "Rebel" Mitchell is one of the best aviators of her generation. She grew up hearing the adventures and stories of Maverick, her father, that he used as bedtime stories. She became an aviator with her best friend Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw and now both of them have to come back to the Top Gun Academy for an important mission. Only the best of the best is called for this mission, including the southern idiot called Jake "Hangman" Seresin. Both of you had hated each other since day one. Now, having to work together once more, you count the days for this mission to be over, not only to never see Hangman again, but to also cut all connections again with your father.

An hour after Hangman leaves, and tired of seeing Rooster flirt with every moving thing that walks in the bar, you get ready to leave. You kind of wished that Hangman would have stayed a bit longer. It was nice talking to him. It felt like discovering a new side of him. You exit the bar, grabbing the keys of your bike when your phone beeps inside your pocket. You look at it, the name on the screen making you smile.

Iceman.

Iceman: Honey, you cannot mop the floor with your father’s ass on the first day.

You: I was just doing my job

Iceman: Breaking the hard deck?

You: you know too much to be on a medical leave.

Iceman: I brought you two here, of course I know what you’re up to.

You smile. Iceman recommended you two to Cyclone when the mission was brought up. He knew that if someone was able to do the job, it would be his nephews. Yeah, he always called you that. You remember spending your summers in Iceman’s house, watching in awe how your father and him argued about who was right and who wasn’t every time that someone brought up a memory. He was like the cool Uncle you’ve never had.

He was the one that told you that, even if your father was against it, you should be a pilot. You had it in you, it was in your blood. And God knows that the world needs more amazing pilots like Maverick.

You: He tried to fix years of resentment in a dog fight, Ice. Can you believe it?

Iceman: Actually, I can. That’s your father’s style.

You: He almost got us killed.

Iceman: And yet I heard that he was the one to pull up first.

You: You really know too much.

Iceman: You need to forgive your father, y/n.

He was one of the few that used your name and not your call sign. It made you feel like a child sometimes. But for him, you where his little girl.

You: If he wants me to forgive him, he needs to explain why he did it.

Iceman: He won’t tell you.

You: Do you know why?

Iceman: Yes, honey. I know why he did it.

You: Could you tell me?

Iceman: I wish I could... but it has to be him

You: Yeah... you’re right. How you holding up?

Iceman: I’m better. I can even talk a little.

You: That’s amazing, Uncle Ice! I’m so so happy for you.

Iceman: How’s Rooster? Is he doing okay?

You: He’s still too cautious for his own good. He’s having problems following the rest.

Iceman: He needs to be faster...

You: Yeah...

Iceman: Be careful out there, okay? And don’t be mean to the other kids.

You: I’m not the mean one?

Iceman: Do I have to remind you that time you threw Rooster in my pool because he said that you were tiny?

You: He’s the giant.

Iceman: As I said, don’t be mean to the other kids.

You: Okay, Uncle Ice. See you soon. Love ya

Iceman: Love you too, kiddo.

You wish you had time to visit him, but all this hard work is making you exhausted and you barely have time to breathe. You’ll try to visit him next week, before the mission.

You turn the engine, but it doesn’t budge. Come on, not again. This stupid bike... You still have it because it was your first bike and it’s special. Lately, though, it’s giving you more troubles than anything.

After several more tries, the engine comes back to live and you leave the bar quickly. Once this mission ends, you’re throwing this old yellow junk away and getting a new one.

The following day, you’re in the briefing room, ready to learn what this mission is all about. There’s no one else here. You sit down, closing your eyes for a few seconds and praying to whoever is listening for this mission to not be as suicidal as you have heard.

People all over the base seem to know what’s up. Whenever you or the other pilots enter a building, they are looking at you with admiration in their eyes. There’s also compassion. They know something that you and the rest ignore, and it’s honestly scaring the shit out of you.

“Morning, Rebel.” you hear Hangman say.

“Morning.”

You don’t open your eyes, focused on the sound of his steps. He stops next to you, though. The leather of the seat crunching as he leans over it.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, don’t worry. I’m just a little tense.” you admit, opening your eyes to see him. He has a tender look in his eyes accompanied by a reassuring smile. He moves his hand from the seat, patting your shoulder softly.

“It’ll be okay.” For some reason, Hangman’s words make you calm a little. You nod, smiling a bit. You’re about to thank him when both of you hear Rooster’s voice outside the room. Hangman moves away as fast as lightning and sits on the other row of chairs.

Rooster sits next to you, nudging you with his elbow. “Chin up, Reb.”

You’re not even worried about the mission anymore. You just want to know what’s Hangman’s deal. He’s been nice to you for the past 24 hours. Can someone change that quickly? And why, of all the possible people, has decided to show you this side?

You glance at him. He’s talking with Coyote; he had entered just after Rooster. Hangman’s signature cocky smile it’s present again, probably followed by some conceited comments on his skills. Your mind goes back to yesterday. His sweet, irresistible smile. The warmth of his laugh. How his voiced lacked that usual narcissistic tone, the feeling of his skin against yours. You’d be lying if you said you haven’t been thinking about it all night.

Rumor has it that a little someone had a crush on Jake Seresin when she saw him for the first time. He was young, attractive, a bit of a ladies’ man back there. But your stupid young heart didn’t care about it. For better or worse, nothing happened back there, Hangman soon enough prove himself to be a complete idiot.

Now you look at him, and you think that maybe, just maybe, people can change.

“Time is your greatest enemy.” says Maverick, explaining, at last, the target of this mission. “Phase one of the mission will be a low-level ingress attacking in two-plane teams. You’ll fly along this narrow canyon to your target. Radar-guided surface-to-air missiles defend the area. These sams, they’re lethal. But they were designed to protect the skies above, not the canyon below.”

Every single pilot in the room turns to look at someone, consternation evident in their eyes. You look at Rooster, his eyes fixated on the screen.

“That’s because the enemy knows no one is insane enough to try and fly below them.” Rooster states what everyone is thinking.

“That’s exactly what I’m gonna train you to do.”

Rooster looks at you this time, raising an eyebrow. Yeah, this is some classic Maverick bullshit.

“Great, another suicide mission.” you mutter under your breath.

“On the day, your altitude will be 100 feet maximum. You exceed this altitude; radar will spot you and you’re dead.”

“100 feet?” your friend whispers to you.

“Roos, this is impossible.” you whisper back.

“Your airspeed will be 660 knots minimum. Time to target: two and a half minutes. That’s because fifth-generation fighters wait at an air base nearby. In a head-to-head with these planes in your f-18s, you’re dead. That’s why you need to get in, hit your target and be gone before these planes even have a chance of catching you. This makes time your greatest adversary.”

You look at Hangman, he seems to be enjoying the information. He's probably going to try to be the first one to get it.

You almost laugh when Maverick says that today “we’ll be easy”.

Max ceiling: 300 feet. Time to target: three minutes.

And that’s supposed to be easy.

Gradually, all of the team gets a chance to try to make it on time, following the parameters and the course marked on the screen. To say that this is almost impossible is to say something. None of your teammates make it on time to target, some of them surpass the 300-foot ceiling, some of them crushed an imaginary rock wall. You make it on time with only a second to spare, but you know that you have to be, at least, 30 seconds faster on the day if you want to survive. Rooster also manages to make it to target, but he is one minute late. Maverick is going to address that and you know it. So, when you enter again the briefing room after all of you had completed the exercise, you prepare yourself for the worst.

Maverick projects on the screen a simulation of Coyote, Phoenix and Bob’s exercise. You watch how the miscommunication of the team makes them fail.

“Why are they dead?” asks Maverick once the simulation is over.

“We broke the 300-foot ceiling and a Sam took us out.” explains Phoenix.

“No. Why are they dead?” Maverick moves to Coyote, knowing that he’s the one that needs to give an explanation here.

“I slowed down and didn’t give her a warning. It was my fault.”

“Was there a reason you didn’t communicate with your team?” Maverick is harsh with his words, but you have to agree that this would have been a successful exercise if they had communicated between them.

“I was focusing on...” Coyote tries to explain but Maverick cuts in.

“One that their family will accept at their funeral.”

Auch. That one hurts, old man.

“None, sir.”

Maverick moves again to talk to Phoenix.

“Why didn’t you anticipate the turn? You were briefed on the terrain.”

Phoenix doesn’t have time to speak.

“Don’t tell me. Tell it to his family.”

He turns to the screen, changing to the next simulation: Hangman, Payback and Fanboy. You’re honestly not surprised that Hangman tries to be the fastest and leaves the other two behind. He lives up to his name.

“What happened?” Maverick asks to Hangman.

“Well, I flew as fast as I could. Kind of like my ass depended on it.” responds Hangman, proud and conceited yet again. You’re beginning to think he has two different personalities.

“And you put your team in danger, and your wingman’s dead.” Rooster interjects, not giving Maverick time to scold the blonde man.

“They couldn’t keep up.” retorts back Hangman. Seriously, two personalities.

“Are you serious?” you ask aloud. Hangman looks at you, smirking before looking at the screen where Maverick has your simulation ready. You look closely, observing and taking mental notes of the places where you should be more careful, and the ones you could be faster.

“This is a great example of how is done. We only need to be faster here. Good job, Rebel.” Maverick praises you, and you nod awkwardly. You haven’t been praised by your father in years, and it feels strange.

The last simulation shows up. Rooster, Yale and Harvard move through the course at a slower speed than required. They make it to target, but at this speed, they’ll have to dog fight their way out.

“Why are you dead? You’re team leader up there. Why are you, why is your team dead?” Maverick asks, and you can feel in his tone that he is somehow disappointed. He did expect more than this from Goose’s son.

“Sir, he’s the only one besides Rebel who made it to the target.” butts in Phoenix, trying to give credit to Rooster.

“A minute late. He gave enemy aircraft time to shoot him down.”

“You don’t know that.” Rooster affirms. Well, if the situation was different, and you had some enemies doing that course and they ended one minute late, you would have had time to make it to their position. Maverick’s right.

“You’re not flying fast enough. You don’t have a second to waste.”

“We made it to the target.” Rooster tone is dangerous. He is fuming.

“And superior enemy aircraft intercepted you on your way out.” Maverick is trying to reason, trying to explain to Rooster why he’s wrong. And you hate to admit it, but your friend needs to leave the resentment aside and listen.

“Then it’s a dog fight.”

“Against fifth-generation fighters.”

“Yeah. We’d still have a chance.”

“In an f-18."

“It’s not the plane, sir, it’s the pilot.”

“Exactly!”

“There’s more than one way to fly this mission.”

“Roos...” you try to stop this conversation, both of them are heating up and you don’t want them to cause a scene in front of the team.

“You really don’t get it. On this mission a man flies like Maverick here, or a man does not come back. No offense intended.” says Hangman. Yeah, he must have hit his head against something yesterday and his real persona is coming back.

“Yet somehow, you always manage.” Bob adds, always ready to say something against Hangman.

“Look, I don’t mean to criticize. You’re conservative, that’s all.” begins Hangman and you know he really means every single word he’s saying.

“Lieutenant.” Maverick tries to stop this conversation, but Hangman keeps talking.

“We’re going into combat, son, on a level no living pilot’s ever seen. Not even him. That’s no time to be thinking about the past.” he says his last sentence looking directly to Rooster. What is he implying? Wait, thinking about the past? Does he know about Goose? Does he know that Maverick flew with him? Wait... does he know that Maverick is your father? Is that why he’s been so nice to you? Your brain moves fast, remembering how he began to be a decent human towards you after the dog fight. He knows. And if he had any suspicion left you must have solved it when you told him about the old man trying to pull your papers. How could you have been so stupid?

“What’s that supposed to mean?” asks Rooster.

“You better stop talking, Hangman.” you say, already knowing how bad this is going to end.

“Rooster.” Maverick is trying to stop one of the men, but none of them are having it.

“I can’t be the only one that knows that Maverick flew with his old man”

“Lieutenant, that’s enough”

“Or that Maverick was flying when his old man...”

Hell breaks loose. Rooster gets up of his chair and grabs Hangman by the collar, ready to punch him in the face. Luckily, the rest of the team is fast enough to stop them. Maverick steps between them, you grab Rooster by the arm and the rest try to separate them.

“That’s enough” Maverick shouts.

“You’re a disgusting piece of shit.” you say getting closer to him, but Bob grabs you before you can do something crazy.

“You son of a bitch!” Rooster shouts. You’ve never seen him this angry.

“I’m cool, I'm cool. Hey, hey” says Hangman, smiling. He’s a complete idiot.

“That’s enough”

“He’s not cut out for this mission.” Hangman looks at Maverick, a proud smile on his face. “You know it. You know I'm right.”

“You’re all dismissed” Maverick’s words make you leave the room faster than the rest. You’re almost running, hoping that Hangman enters in the locker room. You see him turning and entering the room. You walk in there without thinking.

“Hangman!”

“Whoah, Reb, what’s u-”

You slap him in the face before he can even end the sentence. He looks betrayed, in some way. As if he wasn’t expecting that you, from all the people, were the one that would end up punching him. He touches his cheek, a dry chuckle leaves his mouth before looking at you.

“If you just think about Rooster’s father ever again, I swear to God it will be ten times worse the next time”

“What are you gonna do? Tell Daddy that some kid is being bad with your friend?” Hangman’s mocking tone hurts more than anything. You feel the disappointment in your heart, twisting it. Do you really thought that someone like Hangman could change? How stupid.

“You know”

“Do you think people are so stupid that they cannot put two and two together?” his voice is raising in anger.

“Does everyone know?!”

“Yes. Everyone knows. It’s not that hard to see. The attitude, the way he talks to you, how you do the exact same things. You’re just like your father”

“I’m not like him” you whimper with tears in your eyes. You can’t be like him. You just can’t.

“You sure? Cause the way I see it, you’re just daddy’s little trouble maker”

“I thought you were different. I thought you were being nice to me because you wanted to be my friend”

“Thanks, but I don’t need your friendship”

You come closer to him, breathing the same air. You can see his jaw clenching, glancing at every part of your face but your eyes. How did you two end up like this?

“When you end up alone, and nobody gives a shit about you, you will regret every single decision you’ve ever made. Nobody will ever love you”

“I don’t need love”

“Yeah... love is for the living people. And you're dead on the inside” you leave, tears falling to your cheeks and blurring your vision on your way out.

Jake sees the tears in her eyes and he wants to stop. He doesn’t know how, though. He was so focused on Rooster in the briefing room that he forgot that if someone hurts Rooster, they’re hurting Rebel. They’re two sides of the same coin. Always been together, always will be.

He cannot try to be Y/n’s friend if he doesn’t stop talking shit about Bradshaw. That's basic common sense. And yet, here he is, with a red cheek and an aching heart.

He wishes he could go after her, ask for forgiveness and fix everything. That option was taken away years ago. And he doesn’t know how to fix all this shit.

When did the world get so complicated? When did he became such an asshole?

When did he fall in love with Y/n Mitchell?

Has he always been in love? Well, he doesn’t know. But when he entered the room this morning and saw her sitting there, alone, and with a face contorted with fear, he wanted to do something. Talk to her, touch her, hug her... Anything. She can be reckless, but she’s not stupid. She knows when to be scared and this mission is one of those in which not all the team makes it home. Jake knows that Rooster will be team leader and Y/n will be on the mission. He’s not going to see that girl flying a suicide mission with a leader who is prone to froze in fear and be unable to proceed. Rooster needs to react. He’s a great pilot, goddammit. He just needs to stop thinking about the book.

Is Jake trying to make him crack? Probably. Now he’s realizing that’s not his job. And that he messed up big time.

He needs to make things right and apologize to them. That's the only way to get close to her. And he needs to be on her good side. Not because he wants to fly the mission. He doesn’t care about it anymore, honestly.

He's not going to let his girl go up there without telling her how he feels.

Cursed By The Blood

(a flash fiction story by EJ Stark, for @flashfictionfridayofficial's prompt "blood is thicker than water")

Great Aunt Ida’s death was the best thing that ever happened to her. At the funeral, Emma made a long-winded speech about the best moments of her young life, sitting in great Aunt Ida’s living room, drinking bitter coffee, listening to Ida tell her stories.

Emma’s mother did not appreciate the “best moments of her life” line.

Emma did not care. It was a lie anyway.

Her best memories were the moments in between. Driving her 1991 blue Volvo down the highway with her fingers out the window. Stopping at the gas station and putting too many creamers into a cup of bad coffee. Sitting in the public park behind the old elementary school for five minutes of blissful freedom.

Ida left all $30,000 of her life savings to Emma.

And she was nice enough to die just after Emma had finished her online college degree. Her mother insisted she do a remote degree rather than moving away. So the day the bank transfer came through with her inheritance, Emma paid six months rent up front for an apartment in the mid-sized city two hours away, where everyone went to do their monthly Target run and packed a suitcase. Even her family’s methods couldn’t convince Target to come to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere.

She left. After burning everything else she used to own on the lawn, leaving a giant scorch mark for her mother to come home to.

The apartment was damp and dark. Emma stopped using the harsh overhead light. She bought a lamp at Goodwill that made a disturbing crackling noise every time she turned it on. She turned the lamp on early tonight as a storm rolled in.

She hunched over her laptop. The rain intensified, pounding on the window so hard she couldn’t hear the knocking until it let up.

The knocking didn’t go away.

Opening the door, she wished the rain had kept up.

Her mother was standing in the hallway, dripping water onto the stained carpeting. She stared at Emma. Emma stared back.

“Don’t you dare close that door in my face.”

The old woman down the hall, the one that Emma was sure had called the landlord and complained about Emma making too much noise, cracked her door open.

“Then I guess you’d better come in.”

They continued to stare at each other. Emma from the broken chair and her mother from the only couch cushion that didn’t have a mystery stain on it.

“I see you’re still running from your responsibilities.”

Emma folded her arms. “I don’t think I should have to pay for decisions made before I was born.”

“How is your abysmal minimum wage service job?” her mother asked, eyeing the Facebook Marketplace chair, missing a leg and currently propped up with the pile of books Emma had brought with her.

This is what happened when you came from this type of family. She knew what really lived in the woods, how to summon it, how to keep it out. But she was terrified of customer service. So she hunched herself over her computer, her spine rounding like a shrimp’s, desperate for a remote job. Punching keys and inputting numbers in exchange for her rent.

All she had to show was two months of rejection letters.

No.

She was convinced no one would ever say yes to her unless they were terrified of her family’s connection to “the land.” That was what the locals called it. She knew what they meant by “land” even if they didn’t.

She’d been down with her mother to the deep, dark place in the forest. She had looked long through the trees and seen what was really growing in the mountains so ancient they predated the seas.

“I won’t come back. I never wanted to stay in that town. So carry on with your shit and leave me to mine.”

“Being born into this family comes at a cost.”

The rain continued. Emma worried slightly that the window would break, shattering into a million pieces that would never come out of the carpet, no matter how much she vacuumed.

“Nothing bad is going to happen because I was a little independent.”

“The town will rot into what it was before us.”

Emma looked her mother straight in the eyes.

“Then let it rot.”

Her mother had realized twenty minutes ago that her daughter wasn’t going anywhere. Emma had realized that her mother would realize her daughter wasn’t going anywhere the moment she opened the door.

So when her mother tried to get off the couch and couldn’t, Emma smiled.

“Having trouble, Mother?”

“There is a price for this,” her mother hissed.

Emma leaned forward and whispered, “I know.”

Her mother continued to struggle, the hidden bundle under the couch sucking the life out of her. Emma knew her mother would only sit on the cushion without the stains.

The bundle had sat under that cushion for three weeks. Ever since the day Emma realized she would have to completely cut ties with her family and everything they were attached to.

She looked away as the skin on her mother’s hands flaked off and her eyes went glassy and still.

The rain disappeared. The Goodwill lamp flickered and died. Moonlight pooled on the carpet.

A shadowy figure existed on the other end of the couch. It had always existed in that spot. A tiny part of her brain tried to protest that fact, but it was wrong.

“We’re even now,” she said.

The figure smiled. “What a child you are.”

Emma sat up straighter, looking at the figure’s face, or where the face should have been. Her hands did not shake. “I know how to deal with things like you.”

“When you deal with ancient things, you put yourself at their mercy.”

“But the rules—”

The figure cackled and vanished.

Blue Death-Feigning Beetle (Asbolus verrucosus)

The hardy death-feigning beetle is a darkling beetle native to the Sonoran desert of the southwestern USA. They are a crepuscular species that can be found hidden in sand or beneath rocks, or traveling across the ground during their most active periods; the death-feigning beetle doesn't have wings to fly with.

These beetles are increasingly popular in the pet trade due to their longevity, hardiness and ease of care. In captivity, these beetles may live up to 15 years, making them remarkably long-lived companions as far as most insects go. Their diets are extremely diverse, too—they are omnivores which can be fed fruits, vegetables, lichen, shrimp, dead insects, as well as commercial dog or cat food! These desert-dwelling beetles are also excellent water conservers. Their powdery blue color comes from a thick, waxy cuticle which protects them from water losses from evaporation. They generally get along quite well with other arthropods, too; they have been successfully housed with typically-aggressive bugs such as giant hairy scorpions (Hadrurus arizonensis) and velvet ants (Mutillidae family).

The blue death-feigning beetle earns its name from a surprisingly successful predator-evading behavior—when encountering a threat, this desert-dwellers will flip onto its back and curl up its legs, playing dead. It preforms this behavior in the hopes that a potential predator will pass up the chance for easy prey, choosing instead to pursue something fresher or juicier. These skilled actors may hold this death pose for anywhere from minutes to hours, and are totally unresponsive to poking and prodding.

htf but i rank some of them based on how well i think i could fight them from easiest to hardest. no weapons or anything just physical strength and sheer will

sniffles: this is the easiest dub of my life. i could wipe the fucking floor with him so easily it almost feels unfair. he's a scientist who likes comics.

cuddles: even though he canonically has a black belt in karate i think he'd be the type to freeze up or run when something actually threatening happens. the black belt is just for show. a light punch is enough to send him sprawling.

toothy: i think he and cuddles are on the same level but his giant tail worries me. he could trip me up easily with it and kick me while i'm on the ground. as long as i avoid it though he's eating asphalt.

disco bear: he doesn't know how to fight. at all. his obsession with his looks would probably affect it somehow as well. he'd be first on this list if he wasn't also a bear, but as long as i don't give him any opportunities to keep me in place then i can win.

shifty (and lifty): he isn't exactly strong, but he doesn't have to be. raccoons are masters of deceit and quick-mannered actions. i'd tussle with him and it'd devolve quickly into more of a catfight than a proper one. i'd have to kick him really hard, several times, to win.

nutty: his unpredictability and hyperactivity would make it hard to actually hit him. he's not strong, but i'd genuinely fear for my life if i got bit or scratched by him. my only hopes for winning would be managing to keep him in one place while he's giggling like a maniac.

petunia: her vigor and attitude intimidate me. she's not the best fighter, but it hurts, and my best bet here would be taking advantage of her cleanliness obsession to disorient or distract her. whether or not it works decides the fate of the fight.

flaky: the quills are the biggest problem here. i'd have to stay in front of them the entire time with little leisure on any other sides if i don't want to meet a gruesome death, which is extraordinarily hard. i'd need a lot of luck.

handy: even though he doesn't have arms, he's still a construction worker. he's used to maneuvering without hands; i am not. a kick or a tackle from him would definitely hurt, and it's already over if i fall to the ground.

russell: he is a sailor with a hook and i am scared. he could pick me up like a barrel and bodyslam me until i'm wheezing blood and curling like a shrimp. listening to his pirate accent while he talks demotivates me even more and i allow myself to be killed.

flippy: it's not really a fight at this point. anything i try to do he stops and i'm apprehended near immediately. he looks at me more disappointedly than anything and politely snaps my wrist.

fliqpy: he's the same as flippy, but his manner of going about it is feral and kind of terrifying. i don't move towards him first, HE does, and then i'm getting my arm twisted backwards and my skull slammed into the ground. i weep.

lumpy: i'm terrified of whatever i must've done to make him of all people want to fight me. he's a moose. a single well-intentioned kick is breaking my fucking ribs and killing me.

splendid: he looks at me and i am dying. he breathes near me and i am dying.

Whoa, a map of the location of the mer au!

The shallow half and deeper half are separated by a steep cliff, represented by the thick black line.

The coral reef is the most colorful biome, sporting a beautiful variety of coral, and is abundant in fish for pups to hunt. During the day it is relatively safe for pups, as long as they don't stick their hands where they can't see them. The eels here can deliver nasty bites, and mantis shrimp do not hesitate to take a swing at anyone who dares provoke them. At night though, the reef sharks come out to hunt. While individuals aren't likely to go after pups, packs certainly will, so best not to stick around when the sun goes down.

The seagrass meadow is open, vast, and as the name suggests, lush with seagrass. Large fish will occasionally visit this place to hunt, including sharks, so exhibit caution when exploring. Passing dewgongs and sea turtles are a rarer sight, coming to eat seagrass. They do not pose much of a threat to pups. Stingrays hide in the sand while seahorses hide in the vegetation. Scatterly spends his days eating away at the seagrass, much like the animal he mimics.

The kelp forest is like a labyrinth. It is dense with its signature kelp, filled with small fish to eat and many sea urchins that, if one can get past their defenses, make excellent snacks. This makes it alluring for mer pups to visit, but once inside it becomes increasingly difficult to navigate, and it is very easy to get lost. Best for pups to stay on the outskirts, so they don't lose their way. The shark trio often hunt on the outskirts of the forest, seeking out the seals and sea lions that feed here.

The mer nursery is a sandy clearing bordered by both the reef and the meadow, and as it is usually guarded by the shark trio, it is considered one the safest places for pups to live.

Beyond the reef is the dune spires. At first it seems desolate, with the sandy dunes sporting only sparse patches of coral and the occasional crustacean, but small fish and even squid congregate here, often using the massive rocks that jut out of the sand like towers as shelter from predators. It's dark, and the waters here are far colder. Sharks, whales, and giant squid frequent these areas to hunt, even though they put themselves at major risk by doing so. The dune spires are Joe's turf, and the massive leviathan is one of the most dangerous beings in the region. He is luckily kind and very gentle with pups, which makes him an excellent babysitter.

The bone fields is a hostile place, and pups should steer clear of it whenever possible. Visibility is low, the water is even colder here than in the dune spires, so cold that pups risk freezing to death if they they stay there for too long. Bones litter the whole area, of both animal and mer alike. This place isn't a total wasteland, though. Many scavengers thrive here, especially invertebrates like isopods, crabs, lobsters, many kinds of worms, and more. Sleeper sharks and octopuses are also common here. This place is Zongazonga's domain, and he rules with an iron fist. A behemoth of a kraken mer, he is known for his ruthlessness and cannibalistic tendencies. Any mer with a shred of self preservation avoids the bone fields and pups absolutely should never be allowed to venture here.

what do you think about the pale king?

oh my dear anon, have you been on my blog for longer than 5 seconds? isn't it obvious? hahahah

i love him, he's my favourite character next to hornet and grimm. sure he gets like one spoken line in the game, and is dead by the time we meet him, but i just couldn't help but get attached even despite his horrifying actions

first it started with memes, you know, all the "haha baby murderer" thing with no substance, but the more i looked into him as a character, the more fascinated i became. there's a lot more nuance to him than i first expected, so many possible blanks to fill, and i saw an opportunity to create my own version of him. and over time, my love for the little shrimp just kept growing, to the point where i would consider him to be one step away from basically becoming my oc. obviously i can't really make him one, but he's as close to my heart as my own created characters

and as you can imagine, with your favourite blorbo comes a metric ton of projecting. i gave my pk a lot of my own personality traits. the aversion to loud noises and big crowds? the introvert personality? finding grimm hot? the passion for creating things and using it as a means to escape problems? all the bottled up emotions that he won't talk about in fears of burdening others and making it look like he's just feeling sorry for himself? yep. that's all me, more or less

does seeing people hate him make me sad? well i'd be a liar if i said "no", even if i understand where it's coming from. he's done horrible things, yes it was with the best intentions, but he's done them. do i excuse it? no, of course not, but i can emphasize with him to an extent. being put in the same scenario as him, where there's no good option and all possible outcomes end in pain and death? i really don't know what i'd do, and i imagine he was just as overwhelmed by all of it. again, i don't see that as an excuse, more as an opportunity to give him more depth as a character. after all, why would i hate him, if he does more than enough self-loathing himself? i see my au as a chance of redemption for him, yes, because i'm a sucker for second chances and good endings, but i also don't feel like he'd just get away with all of that scot-free. and how to make sure that doesn't happen? tons of self-hate and guilt, of course, with a sprinkle of a crippling fear of failure as a treat. in the end, you can move on from your mistakes, but you can never run away from yourself

as a side note, i also really like his design. he looks so damn stupid with that giant funko pop head, those alien looking eyes and the ridiculously massive fork shaped crown. he has this pathetic aura to him design-wise that i just love so much

in the end, my version of the pale king is so distant from the canon that some could consider him a completely different character, which to be fair, isn't really that far off. he really is my blorbo, and i would take a bullet for him. would i do the same for other pk interpretations out there? probably not. but that doesn't change the fact that i love him as a character and i'm glad there's other people out there who like him as well. makes me feel less lonely about liking this goofy shrimp man
